Buck wakes with a strangled gasp, visions of the scenes he’d just seen in his fitful sleep still vivid and chilling as they flash behind his tear-filled eyes.
His breath comes in ragged, uneven gasps as he blinks his way into consciousness and tries to shake off the nightmare that still has its claws sunk deep into his racing heart.
“Shh.” There’s a warm, familiar voice in his ear, thick and heavy with sleep. Everything settles. Buck’s breath comes a little easier, the rapid rise and fall of his chest evening out as he registers the warm, grounding weight of Tommy’s arms around him.
When he was a kid, his nightmares looked a little different. Instead of 100-foot waves and snipers in broad daylight, he used to see monsters and ghosts. When he was older, he had a recurring nightmare of a man who looked a lot like Doug dragging his sister away kicking and screaming. He used to slip out of his bed and shuffle down the carpeted hallway to Maddie’s room, where she’d wake up to the creak of the door and the triangle of light bleeding into the dark room and say, “Evan? What is it?”
He’d sit on the side of her bed and she’d take his hand in hers and ask him what he wanted to dream of instead. He’d say riding our bikes or the ice cream truck or building sand castles at the beach and Maddie would fold his still-shaky fingers down to lock the good dream in and she’d ruffle his hair and send him back to bed feeling lighter and safer and loved.
It’s different now, but somehow still the same.
He still drifts back to sleep feeling calm and safe and grounded. Only instead of Maddie tucking good dreams into the palm of his clammy hand, he has Tommy pressing kisses into his hair and whispering promises against the shell of his ear. It’s different, but it’s good.
It’s so fucking good.
It’s good even now, as Buck’s breath catches on a shaky inhale, a tiny whimper slipping past his lips.
Even if he tried, he couldn’t find the words to explain the sick and twisted things he just saw in his dreams, nor could he get them out past the lump in his throat. But he doesn’t try and Tommy doesn't expect him to, doesn’t ask him to relive the worst moments of his life for the second time in one night. Buck’s already made the introductions between Tommy and the ghosts still so intent on haunting him.
Tommy knows that on the nights they come back around, Buck would rather be held. He would rather be reminded that he’s here and he’s alive and that it all didn’t end on the pier that day, beneath the ladder truck that night. That his heart started to beat again in the eighteenth second of the third minute, that he came back. And that he’s not alone.
Tommy shushes him again, warm and reassuring. “S’okay, baby.”
His arms tighten around Buck’s waist, pulling him back against his chest with a sleepy, contented hum. He mumbles something into the side of Buck’s neck that Buck can’t quite make out, yet understands perfectly when followed by the gentle, almost reverent press of Tommy’s lips to the side of his jaw.
Hot tears prick at the backs of Buck’s eyes, and he’s not sure if they’re a product of the nightmare or the fact that, even in his sleep, Tommy shows up for him.
Tommy always shows up for him. Physically, sure– Buck will never forget the sight of him all but tearing through the hospital doors, sooty and sweaty and smiling, despite the bone-deep ache that comes from sixteen hours on the scene of a fire. But emotionally, too.
He’s levity when Buck needs it and sincerity when he doesn’t. He’s generous with his affection and even more so with his praise. He’s a steady, grounding force, an anchor in the sand when Buck starts to feel unmoored, when the waves get too high and it all gets to be just a bit too much. He’s patient and charming and kind and he’s such a nerd. And he’s aware and attentive in ways that still make Buck’s heart swell and his chest ache.
It’s like he has a sixth sense, how he’s so tuned into Buck, how he always seems to know what it is Buck wants, what it is Buck needs. He knows just what to say, just what to do. Even now, half asleep. Tommy shows up for him. Always. In all ways. And Buck could cry about it.
No, scratch that.
Buck will cry about it. He tries blinking the tears back, but it’s no use. They’re heavy and hot as they roll down his cheeks. Tommy’s voice is still deep and gravelly, thick with sleep as he holds Buck close and murmurs, “I got you.”
He hasn’t said it yet, but Buck knows. He knows. He feels it deep in the marrow of his bones and in the warmest corners of his soul. He hasn’t said it yet, but he will.
Buck can hear it in the silence that settles over them just before they drift off to sleep, tangled up in each other’s arms. He can feel it in the moments between slow, steady heartbeats as they move around Tommy’s tiny kitchen, cooking breakfast and swapping coffee-laced kisses and stories from their shifts. He can see it in the warmth of Tommy’s smile and the fondness in his eyes any time he walks into a room. He can feel it in the reverence with which Tommy touches him, the way he says his name like a prayer and a promise all at once.
Which is why, just as much as he knows that he loves Tommy, Buck knows that when he does say it, Tommy will say it back.

Tumblr media
Evan snapped the elastic hem of his boxers against his hips as he slowly padded through into the bedroom. His bare feet sank into the carpet and made him more tired than he felt when he woke up. He could just sink back into bed and sleep for a week straight, but he had only just gotten up and he had to be on shift in an hour.
When he rounded the bedroom door, a smile curved at his lips and his tongue darted out to run along his lower lip when his eyes set on his wife.
Sometimes it still stunned Evan to think that they were married, that he had got the girl of his dreams, the girl that raced across his mind twenty four seven.
It didn't matter that they had been joined at the hip since they were eighteen, Evan was still amazed she had stuck by him and wanted to be with him this long. He could still hear the surprise in Maddie's voice when he rang her up and told her he got engaged and he'd never seen his sister so proud as she was when he got married. Even if he had banned Doug from the wedding, his sister had smiled at him in a way he had never seen before and it empowered him.
"You're staring," (Y/n) whispered quietly as if speaking any louder would break the atmosphere around them. But when she locked eyes with him in the mirror, he continued to smile that catfish smile and slowly advanced towards her.
"So are you," He mumbled back as he approached her from behind and gently wrapped his arms around her waist.
He perched his chin on her shoulder and tugged her back up against his chest, squeezing her gently like he wanted to tuck her into his chest to keep her safe and close to his heart. Their eyes stayed interlocked for a few more seconds before Evan tilted his head so he could press a gentle kiss to her neck, feeling her shiver beneath him.
"What're you thinking?" He kept his voice barely above a whisper to keep the slow atmosphere and tempo around them. He didn't seem to realise his fingertips were gliding up and down (Y/n)'s hips and waist, it was an automatic action he didn't seem to think about.
"It's silly…" (Y/n) looked down at her feet for a second until she felt Evan's fingers pressing under her chin and he tilted her head back up so their eyes locked in the mirror again.
"Nothing you say to me is ever silly. Tell me,"
There was nothing she could say to him that he would laugh at or call silly or stupid. Anything (Y/n) thought was automatically important to Evan and vice versa. They promised to tell each other everything and talk through anything that bothered them or interested them and that was what they were doing.
"Just that, these are the first marks on my body that I actually like, you know?" (Y/n) carefully moved Evan's hand until his fingers were touching the stretch marks on each of her hips and across her stomach.
She hadn't really thought about it much but when she was starting to get dressed this morning, her eyes were transfixed on the mirror.
(Y/n) had a lot of marks on her body.
She'd had them all since before she met Evan and when she first showed herself to him, he'd kissed each and every mark and showed her how beautiful he thought she was. And other than the few lovebites and bruises Evan had left on her body over the years, her stretch marks were the first ones she looked at which made her smile.
She looked at those little creases and discoloured lines that looked like childish squiggles and she found herself smiling. They were a sign, a proud telltale to show people that she was doing something beautiful, something amazing that gave her purpose. She was having a baby and there was nothing better that (Y/n) would want marks to show for it.
"I love all your marks."
"Evan…" (Y/n) raised a brow, whining his name as if asking him to be serious.
"I'm serious," He took a step back and turned (Y/n) round in his arms while his hands found their place back on her hips so he could slowly drag her along with him. He walked backwards until the edge of the bed hit his knees and he sank down onto the bed next to his uniform that she had lovingly laid out ready for him.
When he was sat down, he pulled her closer until she got the hint and sat down on his lap, her legs resting over his thighs with her arms curved loosely around his neck.
"I love them all, they show how brave and loving and brilliant my wife is."
Evan turned his head to the left and pressed a gentle, butterfly kiss over the circular mark just below the crease of her elbow. His hands stayed fluttering over her hips while he leaned forward and kissed the burn mark on her left shoulder.
(Y/n) scratched her nails against the short hairs at the back of his head when he left wet, hot kisses down her curved stomach and over the stretch marks on her sides. And she felt his hands move to the small of her back and his other hand cup the back of her neck when he worked his way back up her skin until he could kiss her jaw where there was a slight discoloured line. He was the only person who knew where she got that mark or who knew that it was actually a scar, not a natural beauty line in her skin.
In turn, (Y/n) let her fingertips graze across the violet mark on his left brow, down to the jagged scar on the back of his left shoulder. And when he smiled, she curved her foot round the back of his leg and dragged her heel up and down the indented scar that went from the back of his knee all the way down to his ankle.
"But, I agree. These are the best ones you have." He nodded towards the stretch marks before he pulled her down by the back of her neck and connected their lips in a searing kiss.
"Mine aren't like yours… I didn't survive a blown up fire truck or a collapsing building or saving someone from a broken windshield."
(Y/n) tried to lean forward and hide her face in his shoulder but he knew her too well and knew what she was about to do. He caught her chin between his finger and thumb and kept her head level with his.
"I had a choice, I fought my battles willingly. You didn't. These are hazards of the job, those are survivor marks." His thumb brushed across her chin before he leaned forward to kiss the corner of her mouth. "What's that quote? Show me your darkness and let me love you anyway."
Evan knew each mark on her body, he had committed them to memory the very first time he had explored her body. (Y/n) was a map that he had memorised to the end and he knew the reasons behind her marks and scars and discolourations.
He knew the circular indents- the three on her left arm and the one on her right- were stubbed out cigarettes that had forcefully been put out on her skin and she had been lucky not to get them infected. He knew the burn mark on her left shoulder was from the last remnants of water in the kettle that had been thrown at her by her mother during an argument that got way out of want far too quickly.
Evan knew the cut on her jaw was from a kitchen knife and that it had needed four stitches to patch it back up. He knew which bones she had broken- four ribs, two bones in her hand, two fingers, one toe and her elbow- he knew she had ruptured her spleen when she was twelve and had it removed and he knew her father had been the reason behind that 'accident'.
Evan knew she had been hospitalised for jaundice just after she managed to leave home and only a week after he had met her. They had their first date two weeks after she had been discharged when he insisted one date with him would change her life.
There wasn't a mark on her body or a hospital visit that Evan didn't know about or know the reason behind. And each mark that (Y/n) hated on her body was something Evan loved.
He loved the girl sitting on his lap and nothing, no backstory or scar or parentage was going to change that.
A smile curved at Evan's lips when he felt her hands move to cup his face and her forehead tipped down to rest against his. She brushed their noses together and let her hair fan out beside them like curtains forming a layer of privacy around them. And when she kissed his lips and he tasted her cheery lip balm mixing in with the mouthwash he just used a few minutes ago, he felt like he was falling for her all over again.
"You know I love you, Mr Buckley. Every inch of you."
"I love you too babe, both of you."
***
(Y/n) dragged her fingers through her hair as she waited for the kettle to boil. It felt strange to be home alone without Evan. For the past two weeks, their days off work had lined up together, especially when Evan did the late shifts and was home during the day. Being home on her own felt mundane and unusual.
On the bright side, the kitchen was clean, the living room had been hoovered and everything was prepped and ready for tea tonight and when it was cooked (Y/n) would dish it up on the side ready for when Evan got home. He didn't always get to eat properly when he was at work and it didn't matter if he came home at eight at night or one in the morning, he was always hungry.
A knock at the door broke (Y/n) out of her thoughts and when she turned, her eyes caught sight of the empty tupperware box on the counter.
It was probably Mrs Arden from next door.
She was pushing seventy but from the first day when (Y/n) and Evan moved in next to her, she had been like a grandparent to them. She invited them in for coffee, (Y/n) often went round to check on her and Evan brought her shopping when she couldn't get out. And she had a thing for gardening and over the passing weeks since they moved in, (Y/n) had noticed their front garden had been weeded a lot and a few flowers planted.
But more recently, she was into her baking and was forever bringing round boxes of cookies.
(Y/n) could eat all of Mrs Arden's cookies for breakfast, dinner and tea now she was pregnant and Evan thought she didn't know when he stole a few from the box like he had clearly done this morning. He had taken the last two cookies.
Grabbing the box, (Y/n) headed out of the kitchen and through the hall towards the door with a smile playing on her lips.
"Hi, I…"
The box fell to the floor and whatever she was about to say faded out on her tongue as her mouth hung open. It felt like her brain was short-circuiting and her muscles were tensing and cramping and tightening all over her body.
"Hi girlie, long time no see."
She didn't feel her body slump against the wall or the way her head collided and rebounded off the wall as her knees started to quiver.
That voice was back. It had been so long since she'd heard that voice that it had finally faded from her mind. Even in her dreams, she couldn't remember that shrill sugary tone of voice that always darkened like caramel and turned into burned sugar when he was angry with her. That voice mixed with that smirk made bile rise in the back of (Y/n)'s throat and churned her stomach that always ignited with panicked adrenaline whenever she used to look at him.
How had they found her? How did they know she had moved here? Her name wasn't (Y/l/n) anymore, it was Buckley, it had been for over five years and she and Evan had moved around a lot since they were eighteen. Why had they come to find her now? Why show up when her life was on the track it should have been on all along?
Why show up when her trauma was behind her and her life with a new loving family was just ahead of her?
"(Y/n)…" She sang her name like a childhood song and when his hand planted down on the door to try and push it open all the way, something clicked in her mind.
Her palms planted down on the door and with a violent shove and all of her body weight forced onto it, she slammed the door shut to keep them out. Even after the door clicked in place, (Y/n) pressed her left side, her hands, her head and even her knees into the door as if they were going to barge the door down and make a comotion. But she was never sure what they would do or what lengths they would go to. She could never understand the way their minds worked and that was the only way to survive living with them.
Expect anything, have no predictions, fight at any cost.
"Oh come on now, don't be like this. We've come all this way to see you,"
Her trembling fingers twisted the key in the lock until it would turn no further but when a hand bashed down on the other side of the door, a scream left her lips. She threw the key across the hall, unsure if she meant to do that or not and she slid down to the floor.
"(Y/n) open th-"
"No!" She screamed at the top of her lungs until she couldn't make any more noise or raise her voice any louder. Her hands curled into fists and pummelled into the door until her fist indented into the strong plastic and cuts and tears appeared in her knuckles.
Every ounce of air (Y/n) inhaled was used to scream to block out the sound of their shrill voices and gain whatever attention she could from outside to get them to leave. They never liked a scene, they couldn't risk being caught here, could they? They knew they were violating their restraining order by being here. If she screamed and frightened them enough, they had to go.
Her burning hands scraped against the floor and she shuffled away from the door on her knees when she heard him slam his fist into the door in retaliation.
She needed Evan.
Evan hooked his florescent jacket over his arm and kept tight grip on his helmet as he headed towards the truck. The siren had blared out a few seconds ago and the speakers were on, they had a break in to attend to.
His eyes locked with Eddie and he nodded his head but stopped a foot away from the truck when his phone vibrated in his back pocket.
Putting his helmet and jacket on the floor by his feet, Evan pressed his finger to his ear and answered the call when he saw (Y/n)'s cheesy smile light up his phone screen. That was good timing, the siren was just starting to wear off and if he had gotten in the truck and set off, he wouldn't have been able to answer the call.
"Hey babe, everything okay? You'll have to speak up, we're about to head out on a call."
"Evan! Evan please, O-oh God…"
"Baby what's wrong? Breathe, take a deep breath and try talk to me. Are you hurt, is it the baby?"
His hand moved from his ear to the back of his neck and he felt himself digging his nails into his skin like talons spiking through his neck. What had happened? He'd been gone what, seven hours at most. Had she had some kind of fall while he was out? Had something happened with the baby?
He didn't even realise Eddie had walked over to him until he felt Eddie's grip on his shoulder and Evan unleashed his grip on his neck and grabbed Eddie's arm instead for support. He felt like his knees were about to give way beneath him.
"No, Evan c-come home. You h-have to help me!"
"Okay, baby I'm coming home but I have to know what's wrong you have to talk to me. I swear I'm coming home."
"They're here!"
Evan had never heard her shout so loud in his life. She practically screamed through the words that ended in a coughed sob and he could hear her sniffing and trying to take a deep breath but all she could do was spit and whimper.
He felt Eddie's grip on his shoulder tightening and he was mouthing something, most likely trying to ask what the problem was. The team were already sat in the truck waiting for them and Bobby was stood next to the truck, holding onto the door. He wanted to get in and get going but he couldn't get in when he could see the two of them stood panicked in the middle of the station.
"Who's there? Who's at the house?"
Who on Earth had turned up to their house? Who would be there that had gotten (Y/n) so panicked like this?
"Mum and dad. T-they're g…gonna hurt me Evan,"
All the blood drained down to Evan's toes and made his knees shake and give way if it weren't for Eddie holding his arm and gently nudging him to try and find out what was happening. He could feel his chest tightening and his lungs shrivelling up in his chest like burst balloons.
They had never found her before.
In all the years Evan had been with (Y/n) he had never once been afraid of her parents turning up. He didn't even know what they looked like, that was how good things had been for them. She had never called him up before worrying her parents might be here or thinking she had seen them round a street corner. Why turn up now when things were going so good?
"No. No, baby I'm coming home right now. They don't get to do this, you hear me? They won't come in the house, they won't dare fucking speak to you when I get there, you just wait for me and lock that shitting door. I'll be ten minutes I swear."
He heard her mumble something incoherent before he shoved his phone into his pocket and set off in an unsteady dash towards Bobby.
"Cap, I- I gotta go home! It's an emergency, someone's breaking into the house." His words were partially true, by the sound of (Y/n)'s hysterics her parents might well be trying to break in. But Evan had never told Bobby about the twisted relationship between (Y/n) and her parents, the only person he had told was Maddie because she had bonded so well with (Y/n) and helped her cope so much.
"Eddie go with him, call me when you know what's happening, let me know everything's okay." Bobby patted him on the shoulder and gave him a nudge to tell him it was okay to set off into a sprint. They could cope on this callout without the pair of them but he had to know everything was okay once Evan had got things sorted. He couldn't be worrying about him.
Eddie barely had any time to climb into Evan's keep before the tyres were screeching and he was speeding out the parking lot.
"Jesus Buck! Tell me what's going on, who's trying to break in?" He braced his hand on the door and twisted in his seat to try and look at Evan properly. He had never seen such rage in Evan's eyes before and his face was turning a very dark shade of red.
"Her parents are at my fucking house. They found her." His hands slammed down on the steering wheel so harshly the jeep veered to the left slightly.
"I don't understand… why would they try and break in?"
"We have a restraining order, t-they abused her, Eddie they were horrible, some of the shit they did… they'd stub out cigarettes on her and all sorts." A shiver bolted down Evan's spine as he forced his knuckles up and down his jaw to control himself. Even the thought of what they had done made him want to be sick. "I met her when we were eighteen just after she managed to get away and when we moved in together… dude I found her leaving the house with tins of food in her bag."
"Why?"
"They starved her, she got so used to hiding and hoarding any food she could and making it last, she'd just panic. She hid food under the bed, in her bag, in my fucking car, everywhere. Just in case she got starved at some point."
At first, Evan didn't understand. When he saw (Y/n)'s bag and noticed a tin of beans in there, he thought she'd just popped by the shop and forgot to take it out her bag. When he scoured the floor one afternoon looking for his other shoe, he found a bag of crisps, a bottle of water and a cereal bar tucked under her clothes under the bed.
But when he found the small bag of food tucked under the passenger seat in his truck, he had to ask what the deal was.
(Y/n) had lived her whole life saving what bits of food she could for when her parents didn't feed her and she couldn't find any food for herself. She was used to going days without food or just living on whatever scraps she could find. Moving in with Evan and realising she had control over what food was brought into the house and what she could freely consume was something (Y/n) couldn't grasp.
It was a coping mechanism to have food on her at all times and hide it to prepare for an emergency situation where she might be starving and need some sort of substenance.
Evan's relationship with his own parents was much different, he had a turbulent dynamic but he'd never suffered like (Y/n). He'd seen Maddie suffer with Doug, but that was a relationship not a parental dynamic. He had never been starved or hit or burned or scolded with hot water or been pushed down the stairs and hospitalised.
What she had gone through was something Evan could never imagine or conceive and he would die before he let (Y/n)'s parents see her again or see their child.
They had a pact, their child would never suffer the way they had. Their baby would feel loved and valued and have enough food to eat and enough love to be the happiest child in the world. They weren't going to suffer.
"Buck, I'm sorry… how are we gonna play this?"
Eddie knew they needed some kind of plan when they got there. Jumping out the car and running straight into a fight wasn't going to do Evan any favours and Eddie didn't want to be in between them trying to pull Evan away before he went to far.
"I need to find (Y/n), can you keep them out the house and call the police?"
"Sure,"
As much as Evan was desperate to punch the living daylights out of (Y/n)'s parents, he knew he couldn't do that. His primary focus was (Y/n), he had to get in the house and find her and make sure she was alright because he didn't like what he heard on the phone. And he needed the police to be here as soon as possible.
Her parents were violating their restraining order by being this close to (Y/n) and Evan was going to make sure they got arrested for this. The pair of them scrambled out the jeep when Evan parked hazardly, half on the pavement, partly obscuring the road but he didn't care. He stumbled towards the house, taking in the sight of two people he never thought he would have to meet in his lifetime. They were stood right in front of the door as if they were blocking (Y/n) from coming out her own home and her dad was bashing his fist on the door which sent Evan reeling.
They were going to put (Y/n) into shock.
His eyes darted to the left and his chest tightened when he saw Mrs Arden stood in her doorway, clinging to the doorframe with her phone in her hand.
"Evan, who are they? I- I've called the police, they're frightening the poor girl."
Oh, she was a good woman. She had done Evan a big favour and took one thing off his list. The police would be here sooner than he anticipated.
"Go inside and lock the door until the police get here," Evan waved his hand towards her to usher her back inside and he nodded his head to let her know it was okay. He didn't want anyone else getting involved in this, he had no idea if (Y/n)'s parents would become violent with anyone who tried to interfere. They had never hurt (Y/n) out in public which was probably why they were angry to be shut outside in the open where anyone could see and hear them.
He could feel Eddie close behind him when he approached them and forcefully shoved himself between them to push them away from the door.
"Get the fuck away from my house!"
"Who are you?"
"Did I stutter? I said, get the fuck away from my house, or do I have to get violent for you to listen to me?" He clenched his keys into his fist until he could feel the house key beginning to draw blood from the palm of his hand. And when he turned his head towards (Y/n)'s mother, something glimmered in his eyes. "Maybe I should go get a knife from the kitchen and mark that pretty face?"
A rush of adrenaline mixed with something dark flooded Evan's stomach and satisfaction burned in his eyes when he watched her face fall. Her lips curved down and parted and she took a step back. She hadn't anticipated (Y/n) to remember all the cruelty she spouted to her or for Evan to know exactly what she had said to (Y/n) when she cut her with that knife.
"Go in and lock the door behind you," Eddie patted Evan on the shoulder and gave him a nudge inside when he opened the door. Eddie would stay out here to be safe and stop them from trying to get in or trying to leave when the police arrived.
"Baby…"
Evan's heart dropped down to his stomach when he turned round after locking the door behind him.
What had they done?
(Y/n) was sat on the stairs, her hands clapsed over her ears, blood welling up on her knuckles and she was tipping her head back and forth against the wall with such a thud Evan was surprised she hadn't knocked herself out already.
"Babe… baby please don't do that," He knelt down on the floor in front of her and reached up to cup her face in his hands and he had to tense his arms to stop her from hitting her head again. She had already bruised the left side of her temple. "We don't wanna do that, babe please don't you'll hurt yourself and the baby. I'm here, they're not going to get to you I promise. Come here,"
When he was sure she wasn't going to hit her head again, his hands left her face and moved down to slide around her waist. He coiled her into his chest and carefully lifted her up and took a few steps back. He knelt down on the floor and sat down, tugging (Y/n) with him until she was sat between his legs. He was surprised how quickly she suddenly moved despite her state of shock, she burrowed into his arms like she hadn't seen him in years.
Her hands stayed pressed over her ears but she brought her knees up against her bump and smothered her face into his chest.
Evan curved his arms around her, keeping his right arm tight around her waist to hold her against him and his left hand cupped the back of her head. He tipped his head down and kissed the top of her head repeatedly, quietly shushing her as he began to rock them back and forth.
They had done so well. She hadn't had nightmares in over a year, she was back to how she should have been. Eating properly and whenever she wanted or needed to, not hoarding food for safety. She was beginning to love her body the way Evan loved and worshipped her and she hadn't been in therapy for a few years either.
They were having a baby.
They didn't need this stress and set back, not when they were in the best place they could possibly be.
"Evan,"
When her hands moved from her ears to tightly dig her nails into his bicep, a sigh of relief left his lips and he breathed into her hair despite the tears falling down his face. He carded his fingers through her hair and tensed his arm beneath her hands when she held him tighter.
"I'm here, I've got you. I swear they can't hurt you. Babe, I will never let anyone hurt you or our baby."

So sorry for the delay! This one took me a minute due to life/work stuff happening, but here it is! A doozy! This episode had a lot of parallels with the other characters storylines happening so bear with me here! This is mostly going to be about Eddie.
This episode deals a lot with past trauma, specifically bringing up stuff that some of the characters haven't dealt with in a while or seemingly had already dealt with in the past. Maddie with Doug's abduction, Bobby and the apartment fire, Eddie and Shannon. All of these are re-introduced in this episode, but it's important to note that they are NOT resolved, mostly Bobby and Eddie, and will likely continue into the rest of the season. Maddie reacts the most noticeably to her trauma being triggered, and of the three, she's the only one who has actually managed to work through that trauma from the past, so while it does affect her, it does not cause her to self-destruct like Eddie and most likely Bobby will.
As many of us predicted, we theorized that it was going to get much worse for Eddie before it would get better. And this episode has put Eddie on that path that will likely take him towards rock bottom if Ryan and Tim's interviews and teasers for his 7b arc are to be believed.
The first big parallel to Eddie's storyline is the woman and her baby being abducted by a man with mental health problems who allowed a past trauma with his ex-wife/child to reach a dangerous point. While Eddie's actions in this episode are not placing a woman's life in danger, it does parallel how in pursuit of soothing his own pain, Eddie and this man, are prioritizing their own feelings, over the feelings of a woman stranger (Kim) and an innocent kid.
Tumblr media
I was already anticipating many many Shannon call-backs in this episode, but the writers dive in immediately by having Chimney intubate Catherine. This is the same heavy choice Chimeny had to make when Shannon was hit by a car, and Chimney was interim Captain. He had to make a choice to either intubate Shannon, effectively taking away her last chance to say dying words or to not intubate and allow Eddie and Shannon to exchange final words. With Shannon, Chimney does not intubate, but with Catherine, he does. This could possibly indicate the need for Eddie to make different decisions this time around if he wants to survive this new catastrophic plotline.
Tumblr media
This was an interesting way for the writers to give us a kind of "speedrun" of introducing us to Marisol a bit more. I know that the ENTIRE fandom has been bugging over the fact that we "hardly know anything about Marisol other than DIY and Nunnery", and now they're giving us more information, but notably it's all very surface-level information. It makes the scene feel like Eddie's trying to get to know her for the first time instead of this being a woman he's been seeing for about six months at this point.
While 7x05 did indicate to us that Eddie is trying to get to know her all over again, it really does drive home how little effort Eddie has put into trying to build a relationship with her, which is then further proved by the rest of the episode. All of this demonstrated very clearly just how little investment Eddie has had in ANY of his relationships after Shannon's death. It's probably supposed to make us think "Oh, that's because he only ever truly loved Shannon!" but in reality, the Eddie-Shannon onscreen relationship was very tumultuous, and they spent most of their relationship (even during their time pre-military) away from each other. All in all, the topic of how well Eddie knows the women he's with, and how much effort/investment he puts into his relationships (including Shannon) are being pulled into question here. And I think it's being done to show the audience that Eddie has only ever dated and married women as a duty and not something he actually does because he wants to be with the women as people. Once again, this includes Shannon.
Tumblr media
Before Marisol can even finish her two truths and a lie, Eddie interrupts, starting to dictate the conversation again, and Chris is the one who has to step in, reminding Eddie that this moment is about Marisol. Eddie has been the one to lead his relationships with both Ana and Marisol, almost to the point of steamrolling over them. A similar thing happened in his relationship with Shannon, where Shannon notes that Eddie is always making decisions for them without consulting her, including going to the military, or moving Chris to a new school, etc. and how that was always a giant issue in their relationship. While this moment is not Eddie purposely steamrolling over Marisol, it does show that again, Eddie has a myopic view of relationships with women, where he's constantly trying to steer them towards something that he wants without really letting the woman have any agency. Shannon had to physically leave him in order to get any agency of her own.
Additionally, the choice to have the get to know you game be "two truths and a lie", inherently implies dishonesty, or at least makes us think of lying. And considering that becomes a theme for Eddie this episode and likely in upcoming episodes, it's also indicative of the general theme of not knowing someone and not being honest with them. It could've been "twenty questions" or something not involving purposely lying, but instead it's two truths and lie, and Eddie is now about to be involved in a whole bunch of lies.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've seen others point out that this line is clearly meant to compare Marisol and Shannon. Shannon, Chris and Eddie had a tradition involving smores, one that Chris and Eddie were trying to keep alive only last season when they visited Shannon's grave. This line is meant to show us that Marisol is not Shannon, and as Eddie actually gets to know her, this is more and more evident. It's no fault of Marisol's, but it's likely what is sticking in Eddie's head, right before he ends up meeting Kim. Eddie, once again dictating what he wants Marisol to be rather than accepting the truth of who Marisol is, exclaims that obviously Marisol has had smores because Shannon loved smores. But Marisol is not Shannon, and Eddie is always comparing his partners to Shannon in unhealthy ways.
Tumblr media
While this line is clearly a joke, nothing is done without purpose in TVland, and this is another one of those times where even though Eddie's joking, it's actually telling of how he actually feels. He's already had one foot out the door with Marisol for the last 3-4 episodes, and now it's the smores that makes him say "we can still leave her" because who Marisol is, does not align with who Shannon was. But the thing is, I have a hard time believing that Shannon was even who Eddie truly wanted, at least not without expectation or pressure. Shannon is an Ideal, and no one, not even Shannon herself, can live up to it. No woman is supposed to or can reach this Ideal, because (in my opinion) a woman is not really what Eddie wants deep down in his most hidden of unconscious desires.
Tumblr media
"You two aren't going anywhere". Oh, the dramatic irony is killing me here. Because not even a couple of minutes later, Marisol has lost Eddie for good when he sees Kim. The death bells have already been ringing from the very beginning, but this is the final death knell that has been rung. Even if Eddie stays with Marisol through most of this arc, their relationship will end, as will his relationship with Kim.
Tumblr media
Eddie and Kim lock eyes and he's reminded of Shannon instantly. Because of that, this relationship is dead before it even begins. A moment later, Christopher calls out "Dad!" just like he did when Shannon and Eddie were on the beach, interrupting Eddie's thoughts.
Marisol notices Eddie acting weird, asks if he's alright, he says he's fine, and she calls him out, asking "is that the truth or a lie?" He promises he's fine, but we as an audience know that's a big ole lie. This has been the case for years, and it's interesting that it's coming at this point in the season. The early half of the season we saw Eddie the "happiest" he's ever been. And I can't help but wonder how much of that was true happiness, and how much of that was just putting off thinking about it. It's easier to lie and say he's fine, that his relationships are fine, that his relationship with Shannon was fine. It's harder to admit the truth, that he's not okay, that his relationships with Marisol and Ana were unhealthy and his relationship with Shannon was the unhealthiest of all. It's easier to place the blame on his unhappiness on missing Shannon, instead of admitting that it's his own choices that are making him unhappy.
Another theme of this episode is internalized biases and misunderstanding the current situation due to being blinded by the past. Maddie misses crucial details of her call with Catherine because she was looking at it with too much bias about her own situation with Doug. Eddie also misremembers his past with Shannon, but instead of recognizing his mistake like Maddie, and trying to look at it objectively, Eddie lets that bias from the past effect his current decisions, which is already resulting in a mistake by cheating with Kim and will likely result in more mistakes the rest of this season.
Maddie heard what she expected to hear. Eddie is seeing in Kim what he expects to see from Shannon. Both lead to really bad outcomes.
Tumblr media
Eddie goes back to find Kim/Shannon, and they meet. She looks similar but not really the same (btw, kudos to the makeup team, wow). She has similar facial expressions (nose scrunches, giggles, etc.) and she asks him if he's looking for something specific. And the answer is yes, he's looking for Shannon in Kim, just as he was looking for Shannon in Marisol and Ana.
Tumblr media
This is very obviously a sexual innuendo, which is interesting because their first real interaction is showing more of a "sexual" chemistry, than anything really romantic, or soul-connecting. It's a clear harkening back to how Eddie would use sex as a way to stop fights between himself and Shannon. It's also one of Eddie's biggest distancing tools. He used sex to distance himself from Shannon and from Marisol, as an excuse to not address problems, or just simply to not get to know them. And given that Eddie was having sexual dysfunction issues in his last major episode, this is meant to provide a juxtaposition to that. Sort of a "Hey look Eddie couldn't get it up for Marisol the Nun but he can get it up for the Shannon look-alike". On the surface, this might be to show us that Eddie really only has sexual chemistry with Shannon, but if you look below the surface even a little bit, you'll realize that his sexual relationship with Shannon was also deeply dysfunctional, but in its own way.
Tumblr media
The answer is no. Eddie does not trust Kim because she's a stranger, but this line is meant to remind us that Eddie very much DID NOT trust Shannon for most of her arc in season 2 and even up until her death. It's a callback to the line in season 2 Merry Ex-Mas where Eddie says he "forgives Shannon but doesn't trust her" and Shannon says something along the lines of "Eddie trusting her enough to have sex with her, but not enough to let her see her own son". Kim is hitting all the lines that are meant to remind Eddie of rose colored "Good times" but are meant to remind us, the audience, of all the issues he had with Shannon.
Tumblr media
This moment of Eddie and Shannon on the beach is meant to represent Eddie's "happiest" moment on-screen with Shannon when she was alive. Eddie remembers it that way, as kissing Shannon and finally having his family back together. But in actuality, it was the start of the end for them. Shannon thought she was pregnant, paralleling the time when they accidentally got pregnant as teens and both of them had to put their lives on hold and commit to a marriage that might not have been the ultimate right choice for them. If any of you remember, this is also the moment where Eddie and "signs" and the "universe" are connected for the first time. Eddie asks for a sign, and Shannon says she's pregnant. In my personal opinion, this was supposed to be a sign for Eddie to not get back together with her, given how traumatic it was the first time around, but he ignores it and tries to push down his feelings. "Life is like a vat of chocolate, it pulls you down but it's comfortable". And when Shannon very clearly stated she wanted a divorce, Eddie did not really seem to accept it...and the universe took Shannon away permanently. (Again, I want to reiterate this is all about fiction I'm talking about here not irl, okay? This does not apply to real life) The universe tried to warn Eddie, to bring him a sign, and when he ignored it, as he always does, the universe decided it needed to take Shannon away permanently.
And now here we are again, 6 years later, with Eddie ignoring ALL the signs over and over and over, and setting about down this path with Marisol that literally everyone knows will not make Eddie happy, and what does the universe do? It throws him the biggest wrench it could by bringing someone who looks/acts like Shannon back into his life. Kim was brought in by the universe (the writers) to show Eddie that his relationship with Shannon was not as wonderful and amazing as he remembers it....and he ignores all of the signs yet a-fucking-gain. I get the feeling that this arc with Kim is going to end VERY. VERY. badly for Eddie. I think we should all be preparing ourselves for that.
Tumblr media
Eddie is making active duplicitous choices here. He's lying about being in a relationship with someone else, lying about being a single dad. And it's not the first time he's said something like this (see the "taken for now" line in 7x04), further demonstrating how he's always had one foot out the door with Marisol.
I also want to point out that Eddie lying and deceiving Kim and cheating on Marisol is not meant to be the show saying "this is good! this is who Eddie's supposed to end up with!" The writers know how most people feel about cheating. Most people are 100% aware that cheating is morally wrong, and by Eddie making these decisions, they're not supposed to show that Eddie is inherently a cheater or a bad guy. He's acting OOC on purpose. The writers want us to see Eddie lying and cheating and want us to clock that Something is Very Very Very Wrong and that has to do with Eddie's romantic relationships, Shannon, his perception of Shannon, his perception of his past marriage, and his expectations of himself.
We, as an audience, are not supposed to be enjoying this. We're meant to be uncomfortable.
Tumblr media
911 is doing something really interesting lately with their pointed use of Full First Names vs. Nicknames. When I heard this my first thought was actually of Ana and how cringe it was to hear her calling Eddie Edmundo all the time. Shannon actually never once called Eddie by his full name. If anything, Eddie calling himself Edmundo here, introducing himself by it, is once again supposed to trigger the audience's "Something Is Wrong Here" mode. I was also going to mention how this is also something a lot of people have felt with Tommy's constant use of "Evan" instead of Buck. Some people like it, some people don't, but everyone can acknowledge that it's odd and unusual.
Tumblr media
Even as he's flirting with Kim, talking more about "stimulation", Eddie is holding an "S" for Shannon. I think when Kim told Eddie her name, a sharp K, very far away from the soft S of Shannon, it was a slight shock to him. If her name was something similar like Sherri or Sheila or something, Eddie could've lived in the fantasy more. Her name being Kim momentarily broke the illusion, hence him looking down at the S for Shannon.
Tumblr media
Eddie is remembering the first time he slept with Shannon after she came back into his life while he's sitting at the table with Marisol, completely ignoring her. But not only that, as many people have pointed out, he's misremembering. The walls in the background are recent, with the new teal color and his new bed. Shannon's hair is a cross between dark and light, almost like a mix of Kim and Shannon, and--and this one rocked my world--they had sex right side up.
Many have pointed out how it's odd that Eddie and Marisol's sex scene harkened so similarly back to his one sex scene with Shannon, where they both ended up at the tail end of the bed, upside down. People have often discussed Eddie and his upside-down sex as a metaphor for unhealthy sexual connection, for misconnection, and right side up sex to be healthy sex. To find that he is thinking of him and Shannon in his memory of being right side up has been pointed out by others to be yet another example of Eddie's rose-colored memories of his past with Shannon. In his memory, he views his relationship and sexual relationship with Shannon as this Amazing and One of a Kind thing, hence the right-side-up sex, but in reality, it was upside down, it wasn't healthy.
He's looking at his relationship with Shannon through a veil of the present, chock full of regrets, would've/could've/should've's, and two almost-failed relationships. Not to mention that he literally was just having extreme sexual dysfunction with Marisol not even two episodes ago it's very likely that his remembering this passionate, voracious, unquenchable thirst for Shannon is also brought on by the fact that he's having sexual issues with Marisol. It might also be him wanting to remember that he does and did have desire for sex with women...as long as they're Shannon or reminding him of Shannon. This is not at all supposed to be something that is represented as healthy for Eddie, and I don't believe the show is trying to put across that message.
Eddie remembers his sex with Shannon, and when he decided to "bring Shannon home for Christmas". Even in this scene, the focus is not on the two of them as a couple. He doesn't talk about how much he missed her, or how it feels good to be close to her again. He talks about how he wants to reunite her and Christopher. "Santa" in this present day and age is bringing "Shannon" home for Christmas, by bringing Kim into Eddie's life.
Bringing it back to Maddie's storyline, with the Big Bad Kidnapper of this episode. He was encouraged by his sister to move across the country for a fresh start after his wife and baby left him due to his own abusive actions (assumed, but the sister did say they were "afraid of him"). We don't know too much of the details of this man's story, but it does show a clear parallel to Eddie too, with his wife leaving him to move across the country too (though she left their son with Eddie because obviously, Eddie's not abusive like this man). But the man's sister was hoping that this move would mean he would "stop looking for them". Eddie ends up doing the same thing with Shannon metaphorically. He never stops looking for her in all of his romantic relationships, hurting other women like Ana and Marisol, in the process.
Tumblr media
The man is so clearly a parallel to Eddie but in the worst most devolved way. Eddie has been seeking out a Mom for Chris for years, even when Shannon was alive. It was never about Shannon, wanting her, loving her, needing her because he's so deeply in love with her. No, it was, and still is, always about the mother she could be for Chris. It's the same thing he did with Ana, and with Marisol. I'm not sure if this thing he's doing with Kim will eventually lead there too, or if it won't make it that far before it gets blown up in his face. But Kim cannot be a new mother for Chris, even if she wants to be. Christopher would clock that she looks like Shannon, and might feel betrayed, like Eddie is actively trying to replace Shannon, which I doubt Christopher would take well. So what is Eddie's endgame here? In my honest opinion, I don't think he has one. I think he's acting on pure emotional hurt, and desperately seeking out a balm, and not considering the consequences of his actions.
Just like that man was hit dead on with the literal consequences with the police, I think Eddie's gonna be hit HARD as a result of these mistakes. I feel like it might be something really bad, possibly involving Christopher. If "isolation" is going to become the thing he might have to contend with Christopher being really really angry with him in whatever way that takes form, and the rest of the firefam not being happy with him either. I think Eddie's going to be going through another arc similar to where he was emotionally in season 3a with the streetfighting arc.
Tumblr media
Just how like the man who abducted her was a parallel to Eddie, Catherine herself is also a parallel to Eddie. She's clearly in pain, but she refuses drugs that will make her feel better. She feels she has to stay awake and endure the pain as a comeuppance, similar to how Eddie felt he had to endure his pain like a man because he deserved it. She feels her husband will hate her, just like how Eddie feared Shannon would hate him for what he did. He fears Shannon would never forgive him, but just like Catherine, even worse is the fact that Eddie has yet to ever forgive himself. No matter how many times people tell her it's not her fault, no matter how many times people tell Eddie he's a good father or a good person, they will never believe it. That guilt still rocks them, and for Eddie, it's been the monkey on his back every day LOONNGGG before Shannon even passed. Likely he's been dealing with it from the second he found out he got her pregnant. Even though Catherine's daughter was returned to her, she will still likely feel guilty, just as Eddie's guilt has lingered and festered and turned to rot the longer it's gone unchecked.
It'll only be once Eddie can let go of that guilt, let go of Shannon, and forgive himself, will he ever be able to actually start healing, and making the right choices for himself.
Tumblr media
Many people have pointed out how this parallels the scene in 3x03 with Christopher and Eddie coming to Buck's house after the tsunami. That was a moment where Buck was feeling "lost at sea" and Eddie and Chris came in to be his "life raft that gets you home." And now Eddie's the one lost at sea. He thinks he has to find Shannon when really all he really needs is here with Buck and Chris. Eddie and Chris are "late", but eventually, they will find their way home to Buck.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Have y'all ever heard the phrase "where there's smoke, there's fire"? It means that if there's a rumor or something being said about a topic, there must be some back story/truth in it. It's what I point out every time the show "jokes" about Eddie's sexuality or lack thereof to women, Eddie ready to leave Marisol, etc. They're in the script because there's a kernel of truth to them, even if it's still nebulous (or smoky) at the moment.
Additionally, Buck is making a new lasagna recipe (a metaphor for his new found bisexuality and MM relationship with Tommy) and something about it is not working. In the same way that I've been theorizing that there is misalingment in his relationship with Tommy, we're now seeing that lasagna (like in 6x01 where the couch theory was introduced) is yet another metaphor for Buck's relationships. He had 3 at that point in time (as well as 3 failed attempts at lasagna) and now he's here in a new relationship, and something about it isn't working, he just doesn't know what. I'll reiterate, it's not the bisexuality, but rather the person he's in a relationship with. This being told once again to Eddie, in Buck's kitchen, with Chris present, is driving home the point once again.
Eddie, on the other hand, is aligned with Buck. He knew ahead of time to order a pizza for them. This isn't usual, given that Buck's a good cook, and has cooked for Chris and Eddie many times. Eddie being attuned to Buck right now is meant to show that he can sense these things about Buck, even when it's not conscious.
"To be seen… to be found… isn't that what we're all searching for?"
Tumblr media
Buck assumes Eddie's meeting with Marisol, and Eddie does not correct him. I've seen other people mention how this feels like Eddie is cheating on Buck, and not really on Marisol, and in my opinion, that all comes down to who is Eddie more emotionally intimate with. He already feels super disconnected to Marisol, even more so in this episode, but we've spent the first half of this season establishing how Buck and Eddie are closer than ever. So Eddie lying to Buck feels like the real cheating here, because Eddie has only ever given himself fully to Buck, in all his messed up glory. He's never given that to Marisol, or Ana. And he most definitely never gave that to Shannon.
Side note, I loved the cologne line because it implies that Buck knows how Eddie smells, and that smelling him now is something Buck is enjoying. Him saying they won't wait up for Eddie further cements the domesticity of the scene. Buck has a full relationship with Chris outside of Eddie, but they also have a strongly established bond all three of them. In an episode where Eddie assumes Marisol must love smores despite her never having tried one, Eddie inherently knows that Buck's struggling with lasagna and needs to order a pizza.
Tumblr media
Eddie and Buck's flirting--because that's what it is-- feels natural. More so than the flirting with Marisol in the beginning of the episode, and more so than with Kim-Not-Shannon that was moored down by the reality that Eddie is severely projecting all of his major issues onto her. Buck and Eddie have an easy rapport filled with mutual support, inside jokes, gentle ribbing, synchronicity and above all, friendship and trust. THAT is why the betrayal of Eddie with Kim only a few moments later feels so stark and like a huge blow to the audience.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Eddie sees Kim, and all he sees is Shannon's face, but I have to give MASSIVE kudos to the hair, costume, and makeup department here because they couldn't make Kim look ANY more starkly different from Shannon. In the scenes at the store, Kim is dressed more professionally, in lighter more inviting colors. And then here, when Kim can take off the customer service mask, and be fully herself, we see that she dresses in darker clothing, pants, and jackets with her hair up in almost an alternative-punk style. It's a MASSIVE contrast to Shannon who was almost always dressed in lighter, warmer colors, in shades of orange, yellow, and warm pinks, with minimal makeup and long flowy dresses or soft sweaters. Shannon's hair was almost always down and flowing around her face with her bangs. Kim's hair is completely up, totally out of her face in a severe bun look, without any bangs. She could not look father from Shannon if she tried. And yet, Eddie is not seeing Kim, he's not seeing the individual woman who's probably really lovely, the woman he's inherently hurting by using her to be reminded of his dead wife. No, all he sees is Shannon, and he's 100% willing to tank his whole life just to get a bit of that feeling back.
Eddie is on his way towards rock bottom, and this episode is only getting started. The glass is going to shatter extremely hard, and I worry for what the consequences will be for Eddie for all this, because there's no way he's escaping this without deep cuts. He will likely lose Marisol and Kim in one fell swoop. As for Buck, Chris and the rest of the 118, that's yet to be seen. But we know Eddie's parents show back up later on, so they could be coming in with the steel chair, likely to hit Eddie harder when he's already down. After all, the originator of "Don't drag him down with you, Eddie" is none other than Helena Diaz. This season is giving very strong season 3/4 vibes, and if that's the case, it's possible Helena and Ramon are going to pose a problem by the end of the season like they might've done in season 4 if things had gone as originally planned.
I'm worried, scared and excited to see how this ends up for Eddie. But I'm also hopeful. I see a light at the end of this tunnel. After all, it's always darkest just before dawn.
Thanks for reading my meta!

First it was Daniel.
Then he found out Maddie was still with Doug and hadn’t even met Chimney.
Then it was finding out that Bobby had died.
You were his last shot.
God how he wanted to see you right now. He felt like his whole world had been flipped upside-down, and it had in a way. He was sure of his theory, that this was some alternate reality induced by the lightning strike. That he had to be in a coma. That was the only reasonable explanation for all of this.
The first course of action was to ask Chimney and Hen about you. He had no direct impact in you joining the 118, so you had to still be there right? Your job was your life, and even in a place like this that shouldn’t have changed. You were independently driven, and he just hoped that meant that you weren’t different.
“Oh right,” Hen snapped her fingers at Buck’s description of you. “She went into early retirement to look after the kids,”
“Sad to see her go honestly, she was great,” Chimney nodded along to Hen’s assessment, crossing his arms. “I miss her cooking sometimes,”
“You say that like she’s dead,” Hen rolled her eyes, hitting Chimney’s bicep with the back of her hand. “We see her all the time,”
“Yeah but that’s not the same as coming off a call and having the mastery that is her lasagna waiting in the oven for me to devour the minute we sit down,” Chimney sighs at the thought, his shoulders dropping as he imagines it. “Now we get it maybe once a month if we’re lucky,”
“Wait stop-” Buck holds his hand up to stop the two’s conversation, pushing himself from the dining chair he was sat in at Chimney’s table to stand with a furrowed expression. “Kids?”
You weren’t just not in the 118, you had kids here? Kids plural. Not even just one.
“Yeah,” Hen gives him a short nod with a raised eyebrow, like Buck’s confusion was the weird thing and not you having multiple kids with somebody who wasn’t him. “Chistopher and Nicolas,”
“Well, if we’re being semantic here, Christopher isn’t technically her kid,” Chimney gestures outward with his hands as he corrects Hen’s explanation.
“Oh please she may as well be,” Hen rolls her eyes with a scoff. “He calls her mom doesn’t he?”
“Still, biologically-”
”Guys.” Buck stops the two again, holding up both of his hands this time. “Christopher like Eddie’s Christopher?” There was absolutely no way.
“Yeah,” Chimney nods enthusiastically like Buck had just suggested a good answer for a general knowledge quiz. “They’re not married wherever you come from?”
“They’re married?” Buck swears he’s going to die all over again.
“I’ll take that as a no-”
Buck sat back down on the pulled out chair with his elbows on the table and his head in his hands.
You got married and had a child with his best friend?
This definitely wasn’t where he was supposed to be. Not where you were supposed to be.
You were supposed to be his, he was supposed to be yours. God you’d been through so much together, you’d pledged yourselves to each other. He had a ring waiting for you in his apartment.
You weren’t supposed to be married to anyone else. It was just wrong.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
“Hey,” There’s a gentle hand placed on your shoulder, and you reluctantly tear your eyes away from where Buck is lying towards the origin of the voice.
“You should take a break, you need to eat something and stretch your legs,” Eddie squeezes your shoulder gently as he stands behind you, looking over the top of your head towards the ECMO machine keeping Buck’s breathing regulated. “It’s not good for you to sit here for so long,”
”You know I can’t leave him Eddie,” You sigh softly, dragging your hands over your face to try and rub the fatigue away from your features.
“Please,” He shakes your shoulders gently under his grasp. “You know he wouldn’t want to see you like this, you need to take care of yourself too,”
“I know that…”
“But you’re not going to leave anyway?”
”I just-” You exhale heavily, stretching your back from being hunched over to rest it against the back of the plastic chair you’re sitting in. “What if something happens while I’m not here?”
“Hey,” He tugs on the chair until you’re half-facing him. “If anything happens, I will call you. I promise. Please take a few hours to look after yourself, i’ll watch over him for now,”
You glance back towards Buck’s unmoving body, with a stuttered breath, slowly standing yourself up from your chair with Eddie’s hand behind your back to make sure you don’t stumble with how long you’d been sat there.
“He’ll be okay,” You look up at Eddie with glassy eyes as he tries to reassure you. “He’s a stubborn bastard, he’s not going anywhere,”
“I hope you’re right,”
“When have I ever been wrong?” He tilts his head slightly with a small smile, a lace of joking in his tone in his effort to lighten your mood a little.
It works to an extent, a small breathy laugh leaving your mouth, joined by a small shake of your head as you pull him into a short hug.
“Go and get some food, and then some rest alright?” He pulls away from the hug after a few seconds with his hands braced on your shoulders.
“Yes sir,”
Eddie laughs shortly at your sarcasm, watching you leave the room with a reassuring smile before he takes your place in the chair to watch over Buck until your inevitable return.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
“So what are we doing here exactly?” Chimney calls out to Buck as he power walks into the waiting room of the hospital, just barely able to match pace with Hen as the two follow after him.
“I’m not sure,” Buck stops abruptly once he’s inside, looking around. “I think maybe I’m supposed to come back to where it all started,”
“I guess that makes sense in the rules of this- Alternate universe,” Chimney gestures with his hands, following Buck’s turning head in gazing around the sterile white environment.
“I-I have this weird feeling, like I’m running out of time-” Buck turns to face the two with a furrowed expression and a hand pressed against his chest.
“Ooh, a ticking clock,” Chimney snaps his fingers in amusement, turning his head towards Hen who gives him a dissatisfied look. “Plot twist,”
Hen shakes her head with a roll of her eyes at Chimney, turning her attention back towards Buck. “You were having trouble breathing before right?”
“Yeah?”
“What if that wasn’t a panic attack?” She shakes her head again, but this time not in disapproval, instead in concern. “You guys are talking about this place as an alternate reality, but it’s not,” She gestures between Buck and the two of them.
“If you’re in a coma then this is all in your head, meaning that this place is still connected to that body.” She continues her theory with fervour, and Buck is increasingly grateful that at least she hasn’t changed at all. “If it can’t breathe, you can’t breathe,”
“So he feels like he’s running out of time-” Chimney’s cut off halfway through his sentence.
“Because my body is…”
Buck drags his hand down his face at the revelation. He was really at risk of dying here if he didn’t figure out how to get back quickly enough. He wanted to get back. He needed to get back. Desperately.
“Oh hey!”
Buck would recognise that voice anywhere. And it was both the most and least thing he wanted to hear right now.
“Chim, Hen, I didn’t know you guys knew Mr. Buckley,” Buck turns almost begrudgingly in the direction of your voice, a flicker of hope in his eyes as he meets your face. A flicker that immediately disappears as his eyes turn to the child in your arms.
He can’t be any older than five, and he looks just like you, except for his nose and his eyes. They matched Eddie’s features perfectly. And it felt like they were ripping his heart in two.
“Yeah uh…” The two look between each other as they question whether to divulge Buck’s predicament to you. “New acquaintances,”
“Mister Buck!” The child in your arms waves enthusiastically in Buck’s direction, a perfect mimicry of your smile on his features. He figures this must be Nicolas.
Mister Buck. That’s right, he was a teacher in this weird purgatory. He taught your’s and Eddie’s child. Like his life couldn’t get any worse.
“Hey little man,” His greeting was more than a little stunted, his attempt at masking his features clearly failing under the way concern blooms across your face. He always hated when you looked at him like that.
“Are you alright? I know you just got out of the hospital recently and you’re looking a little pale, maybe you should sit down,” You place Nicolas on the floor to guide Buck over to one of the chairs to sit down, and your touch against his arm feels both familiar and foreign at the same time.
“I’m fine, I’ll be fine,” He waves you off gently with a raise of his hand before bracing his arms on his knees.
“What are you doing here, everything okay?” Hen mirrors your concern towards Buck back onto you.
“Oh, yeah, everything’s fine,” You give her a short nod as you straighten up from where you were bending to held Buck sit down, taking Nicholas’ hand in yours as he tugs on the hem of your shirt. “Just a routine check for Christopher, Eddie’s in with him at the moment,”
“Okay good, can’t have our favourite squad in duress,” Hen nods, happy with your response as she ruffles Nicolas’ hair, earning a chuckle from the boy and only sending Buck deeper into his pit of misery.
He was angry at a child, how pathetic was that.
“Speak of the devil,” Chimney nods his head down one of the hallways, and the group of you all turn your heads in the same direction.
“Daddy!” Nicholas is off immediately, running in the direction of Eddie and Christopher the second he sees them round the corner, and Eddie scoops the boy into his arms with no effort whatsoever.
He always was suited to be a dad. And that arguably made it worse for Buck to watch.
“Everything’s good?” You walk over to the three boys with your head tilted, gaze flickering between Eddie and Christopher at his side.
“All good Mi Amor, he’s perfectly fine,” Eddie presses a kiss to your temple, his free arm sliding around your waist to hold you securely against his side.
And that’s when Buck decides that he’s had enough.
He physically cannot stand to watch you with Eddie like that.
He has to get out of there.
And so he does, standing up abruptly and practically running down one of the corridors, leaving all of you to watch on after him in a mix of shock and confusion.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
When you return to Buck’s hospital room, Eddie has been replaced by Bobby. You can’t really be mad at that, Eddie has Christopher to worry about, and you know that he’s probably having just as hard of a time with Buck’s situation as you are. You can’t even begin to imagine how difficult it is for Eddie to explain the situation to him. How Buck might not wake up.
You didn’t want to think about that right now.
“Hey…” Bobby turns his head up from his rosary beads as you practically whisper out your greeting, pulling a chair over so that you can sit next to him at the foot of Buck’s hospital bed.
He looks just as wrecked as you do.
“Hey,” His hands fall into his lap, thumbs still rolling over the wooden beads as he looks over your state. “How are you holding up?”
“Not great…” You start tearing up almost immediately, hands cupping your nose and your mouth and you lean forward with your elbows on your knees.
Empathy floods Bobby’s expression as he reaches over to rub a hand up and down your back with a soft sigh, watching as silent tears roll over the back of your hands to leave dark dapple marks on your jeans.
“I’m so scared…”
“I know kid,” Bobby pulls you securely against his side with his hand rubbing lines over your arm in a futile attempt to console you, his eyes locked on Buck’s unconscious features. “I’m scared too,”
“What if he never wakes up?” You lean your head against Bobby’s shoulder with a stuttered exhale.
“He’s strong, I have faith in him,”
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
“Oh hey kid, fancy meeting you here,” Bobby peeks out from behind a stacked shelf of medical supplies, his tone much lighter and less serious than Buck is used to when working with him.
“Thought you were dead,”Taking a moment to catch him breath, Buck steps further into the room slowly, his tone almost accusatory as his eyes narrow, beginning to tire of running around this fictional copy of his own life. “What are you doing here?”
“You tell me, it’s your dream, I’m just living in it,” Bobby shrugs nonchalantly, rifling through some of the bottles one one of the shelves. “Living my best afterlife,”
“Uh-huh, so I am dead,”
“Close but not quite,” Bobby suddenly changes position to come from behind Buck where he was previously stood in front of him. Because apparently that’s something he can do in this version of the world.
“Hey what do you think these do?” Bobby rattles a white tube container with a hum, tipping an unnumbered amount of pills into his mouth.
“This place is way too messed up to be heaven but uh, I don’t really believe in hell,” Buck exhales with furrowed eyebrows as he tries to comprehend everything. He feels like from the moment he woke up in this place he’s been in a constant haze of confusion, and no matter how much he tries to make sense of it, he can never fully grasp what’s happening.
“I- I’m in purgatory,” He exhales sharply as he accepts his own conclusion, laughing at himself ina derogatory fashion at his apparent stupidness. “I never really understood the concept of this, is th- is this a waiting room? Do I just have to hang here until my number is called or is it like, a-a punishment, a time out— do I have to do some type of penance before I’m allowed to move on?”
“Listen kid,” Bobby pulls an orange-brown translucent bottle from his pocket. “You need to relax,” He takes a large swig from the bottle, almost animatedly. “None of this is real,”
Buck’s features visibly soften at Bobby’s word, and he lets out a short laugh. “Ah, that’s the good news,”
Bobby turns towards a large white cabinet behind him, pulling the two doors open with both hands to reveal a large medicine cabinet. “The bad news is that it can be real enough to keep you here if you let it.”
“Uh, wh-what do you mean?”
Bobby pushes the clear bottles of pills on the middle shelf to the side to reveal a large glass window behind them, gesturing towards it with his head. “Hey look, you’re alive,”
Buck furrows his eyebrows as he cautiously approaches the window, features only furrowing further as they lock onto the image of the two of you in the darkened hospital room.
“And there’s me. Ooh I busted out the rosary beads, must be serious,” The image of Bobby shows him bent forward in his chair with his hands on his knees and his rosary in his hands, muttering soft prayers under his breath as he holds the beads up to his mouth.
“And a pretty lady, your girlfriend? She doesn’t look so good,” That was an understatement. From what Buck could see of the side of your face it looked like you were crying, the tear stains on your cheeks illuminated under the florescent lighting and making his heart wrench at the sight, wanting nothing more to pull you into his arms and kiss all of those tears away.
Then he noticed himself, lying perfectly still on a hospital bed hooked up to so many different machines he wasn’t even sure if he could name them all. “How- am I there and here?”
“Well, Evan Buckley, this is your deep dark subconscious,” Bobby leans over slightly towards Buck, tone slightly ominous.
Then the sound of a door turns both of them back towards the window as they watch Athena walk into the room and place careful hands on both yours and Bobby’s shoulders. “Oh hey, can we back up for a second? Are you telling me that’s my wife?” He exhales through his nose with a nod of satisfaction. “I mean, some things did work out for me didn’t they?”
“Do you know what’s happening to me in there?” Buck’s eyes lock on to what he can see of himself through furrowed eyebrows.
“Depends on how you look at it,” Bobby’s eyes follow his own, and he shrugs nonchalantly. “You could be dying, you could be fighting for your life. It’s kind of up to you,”
Bobby leans over towards Buck once again as he continues to stare at himself. “Which way you leaning?”
“I- don’t know,” Buck blinks softly, seemingly going over the pros and cons in his head. “This felt pretty great at first but… Then the Doug thing happened, then you, and then…” His eyes flicker towards where your sat once more, a soft sigh leaving his mouth.
“Well, I don’t think you can bring me back from the dead even in here, but…” Bobby crosses his arms loosely over his chest. “I think you can fix the Doug thing, maybe even the Eddie thing,”
“Wo- Would that actually work?”
“I don’t know, I’m not exactly bound by the laws of physics and logic here,” Bobby shrugs again and leans forward slightly. “I know what you know,”
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
Athena walks over to Buck’s hospital bed with a sigh, gently laying her hand on Buck’s wrist to rub small circles against his skin. “I don’t know if you can hear me Evan Buckley, but I do know that you never give up. So don’t start now.” She shakes her head with an exasperated exhale, her tone still authoritative despite her obvious emotion towards the situation.
“Bobby has lost… two children. He cannot survive losing you.” She sighs softly, squeezing his wrist just a little. “And your girlfriend, oh the poor girl… She’s distraught over you. You can’t propose to her if you’re like this. So wake up damn it.” She raises her voice ever so slightly at the end of her sentence out of frustration. Mostly at herself, that she cant do anything to help get him out of the situation he’s in.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
“Wake up.”
“Yeah I’m trying.” Buck gestures exasperatedly with his hands as he walks back towards the hospital waiting room with Bobby following after him. “Just need to figure out what to fix to get back.”
“Maybe you should just give up.” Buck glances over his shoulder at Bobby’s ‘suggestion’, his harsh words contrasting his jovial tone. “Did you know that you were clinically dead for three minutes? Things aren’t looking good for you,”
“How come you’re such a jerk in this reality?” Buck’s tone shift to border frustration as he continues to walk with Bobby following after him.
“Because I am loosing patience.” Buck turns around with a furrowed expression, and the two stop in the middle of the corridor, locked in a stalemate.
“When are you gonna learn?” Bobby crosses his arms over his chest. “Brother’s die, children and their wives die, sisters get beat up by their husbands, girlfriends move on and find someone better, you can’t fix everything.”
“Well I fixed you.” Buck borders on shouting in anger at Bobby’s words.
“Oh really? How?” Bobby stares at him blankly as he anticipates an answer.
Buck takes a few seconds to respond, his eyes narrowing once he’s found his answer. “’Cause I joined the 118… And I mad you mad. And I made you cry. And I made you laugh sometimes, you know?” He exhales sharply, gesturing between himself and Bobby.
“I drove you crazy, but I think you spent so much time trying to make sure that I didn’t get myself killed, that it made you remember what it is to live.”
“So basically,” Bobby meets Buck’s gaze with his own. “You were Buck,”
“Yeah,” Buck seems to relax a little once he’d got everything off his chest, features softening. “I was Buck,”
“And that’s enough?”
Buck turns his gaze down to the ground as he takes a few seconds to think about it, a small breath of a laugh leaving his mouth as he makes his decision. “I think it is,”
“Looks like someone just figured out the answers for himself,”
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
A small group of you stand in Buck’s hospital room as they prepare to disconnect Buck from the ventilator. The priority visitors. His parents stood side by side, wrapped up in each other for mutual comfort, Maddie was hugging herself as an act of self-comfort, and Bobby was stood with his hand on your shoulder trying to comfort you.
The nurse carefully removes the ECMO covering Buck’s mouth and steps back towards the foot of his hospital bed. “And now we wait, see if he takes a spontaneous breath on his own,”
There’s about thirty seconds of silence before the regular beeping of Buck’s heart monitor changes to a jarring sharp sound, and Maddie turns towards the nurse with an anxious expression. “What’s wrong?”
“His oxygen is dropping,” The nurse’s tone is not at all reassuring. “If he doesn’t take a breath in the next few seconds we’re gonna have to reconnect him to the ventilator,”
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
“Right uh, this, this is all happening inside my head, which means I’ve been talking to myself this whole time,” Buck takes a sharp breath in as he looks over the perfect mirror of himself in front of him, who gives him a hum with a condescending expression.
“Upside— uh, I don’t have to feel bad about not listening to you anymore-” He shakes his head towards his mirror image before turning to ignore him, swiping all of the bottles off of the shelves to further reveal the glass window, beginning to pull the shelves off of their supports.
“What are you doing?” His mirror laughs sarcastically as he watches.
“I have to get back, I’m running out of time!”
“It’s impossible. There’s no way in there. You’re stuck with me.”
“It’s not impossible!” Buck shouts to be heard over this negative side of himself. “There is not a locked room anywhere that, with the right tools and enough time, you can’t break into.”
He takes a deep breath to regulate his volume, staring at himself with a determined expression. “ I know that.” He lets out a short laugh as he gains a sudden weight in his hand, a bright red fire axe, one that he’d used so many times in the past. “’Cause I’m a firefighter.”
“There’s nothing for you in that room. No one in there needs you.”
“I’m not going back for them. I’m going back for me.” Buck gives the mirror of himself a final look of disgust before turning to swing the axe as hard as he can into the glass, a loud shattering sound verberating through his ears.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
You all watching in a terrible anxious anticipation as the jarring beeps continue to blare with no indication of change, your eyes locked on Buck’s face as you all desperately will for him to take a breath without any assistance.
And then he does, and the whole room immediately falls into tears. His parents cling to each other with loud sobs, Maddie’s shoulders tremble as she cups a hand over her mouth, and your knees almost give out underneath you if not for the added support of Bobby keeping you upright.
To say you were all relieved was a universally large understatement.
You were sure you’d never felt happier in your life to know the love of your life was okay. And god forbid you ever let him leave your side again.

................................
You’ve been friends with Maddie for a while now. You’ve met in nurse school, and even after she moved to another town with Doug, you still managed to keep in touch. After you found out about everything she’s been through, you’re really important in her recovery. You two were really inseparable now.
Being so present in Maddie’s life made you participate in the major events of her life. Her meeting and falling in love with Chim, becoming a dispatcher, and the best thing that could have happened in her life, Jee-Yun.
As time passed by you really became part of her family and with that being said, you became a very important figure in the big family that was 118.
They all loved you.
You were so caring, loving, willing to help anyone any time. Oh and your hugs, they were the best. And because you work in the hospital, it was quite common to bump into one of them between calls.
Although you were close to everyone, it was this pair of big blue eyes that always catch your attention.
Evan Buckley.
No matter where you were, your traitors eyes were always searching for his, and that side grin. Whether in a crowded bar, or at the hospital, or even at Maddie’s house, there you were, involuntarily looking for him. And surprisingly those blue eyes were already looking at you from the other side of the room all the time.
And the touches.
Somehow you were always touching each other. There was always an excuse for your hands to search each other’s bodies. When he told a very bad joke and apparently only you laughed, your hand was patting his arm. When after your usual breakfast together he would fix the collar of your jacket. When on cold days your arms would reach for his for warmth.
Eventually your hands moved like it had a mind of their own, reaching out to grab each others hands even if your eyes didn’t leave whatever you were focused on.
Everyone noticed the way you acted around each other. And even when one was not around, the other would always brought their name into the conversation. It was very clear to everyone the way you two felt about each other.
But nobody understood why you didn’t get together soon, why it had to be so complicated.
And what nobody really understood, is why he chose Taylor.
This broke you in so many ways and everyone could see how hurt you were. The way you stopped going to the weekly meetings, or how you stopped going to the bar after shift, or how you started avoiding them in the hospital hallways.
Hell, even Buck didn’t understand what he did.
The problem is that he got too carried away with that one night stand, and the next thing he knew he was too involved in this turbulent and full of lies relationship, that he just couldn’t get out of it.
So it was pretty normal to be surprised when you opened the door on a weekday and saw him standing at your doorstep.
“i broke up with Taylor” he said looking at you.
“oh okay?” you let him in and while closing the door, you close your eyes and took a deep breath.
“im so stupid you know”
You did know
“im not trying to be rude or something, but i don’t get why you came to me” he looked at you confused “i mean, we haven’t been talking much since you started dating"
“i know and that’s why I’m such a fool. I should’ve never done that with you, with us.”
“look Buck I’m really not getting your point” your heart was beating so fast.
“my point is, that I’m a mess, okay? And I have this thing where i self sabotage in literally every aspect of my life, specially my love life”
You keep quiet as he blurted out.
“every single time i was with her, every touch, every breakfast, every lunch or dinner, I was thinking of you”
You were still seating on the couch while Buck was about to make a hole in the ground from walking back and forth.
You were so hurt. He chose her, and the minute it’s all over, he simply comes after you to pour out a bunch of words full of feelings. It wasn’t that simple. What about you? What about what you had felt for so long? It wasn’t fair.
“look y/n i want to be with you”
He knelt in front of you and put his hands on your face. You finally let the tears roll down your face.
“you have no idea how long I’ve waited for this Buck” you started and could see that beautiful smile in his lips, only to be replaced with a confused expression when you took his hands out of your face. “until I had my heart broken when you decided to be with Taylor”
“y/n pleas-“
“you don’t get to show up at my door after months with her and say you'd rather be with me. Not when I was getting used to having our Sunday breakfast alone, not when I was starting to go back to the bar with the guys, because looking at you didn't hurt so much anymore. Not when-“
He hugged you.
Buck hugged you.
The words could no longer come out of your mouth and you simply let the tears roll off your face.
“i’m sorry. I really am.” He looked at you again while wiping your tears away. Buck gave you a sad smile. “i’ll give you some space, but i swear I won’t give up on you. On us.”
And with that he left.
***
A few days has passed by and you were still trying to get yourself together after that night, but honestly you were hardly having time to think about anything since the days at the hospital have been intense due to these recent winds. You just couldn’t wait to get home and have some sleep.
Today was one of those days. The hospital was crazy, the atmosphere was tense. Each patient admission was a surprise and you just wanted it to end.
You were heading to the nursing bay so you could update some medical records, when your colleague called you aside.
“some bizarre case is coming up. The truck called the dispatch, i think it’s pretty serious.” She looked at you carefully.
You worked with a very special team, everyone got along very well and liked each other so much. So basically all your colleagues knew about your situation with Buck, but not because you went around talking about it, no. Everyone saw the way you treated each other when you met in the hallways, the care and concern for each other. And outside of it, too.
You had a bad feeling in your chest since you woke up, something was not right. The rain was heavy outside and from afar you could hear the sirens approaching.
And suddenly it was as if the ground opened up beneath you. Bobby was yelling to the doctors about the patient’s condition, how he was having a cardiac arrest. Everyone from 118 was there, looking at the person on the stretcher. You were not prepared for this, you were not prepared to see Buck lying unconscious on that stretcher. When you threatened to run towards the team that would take care of him, your boss yelled at you to stay there.
“we’ll do our best” a doctor said before the doors closed behind him.
“do more” you heard Eddie scream behind you.
You were petrified. This couldn’t be real. You couldn’t speak, the voices around you were like hums, and your eyes were beginning to fill with water. You were in shock.
Bobby noticed how you were paralyzed in the middle of the way and went to meet you. He didn’t have to say a word. As he sat you down on a chair, you could see your hands trembling and sweating. Eddie crouched down in front of you and you looked into his eyes. He knew that you were about to collapse, he was also on the verge of a panic attack.
“w-what- is he-“ You couldn't form a complete sentence and you could notice the fear in your friend's eyes.
“i don’t know”
And after that he hugged you.
***
You were in the corner of the room watching Christopher talking to Buck and the tears kept falling down your face. You just couldn’t stop the tears to roll down your face every time you looked at him like that, your Buck. He was so vulnerable.
You were a completely mess.
You hugged them goodbye and cried even more when Chris told you to be calm, he was going to wake any time soon. He was so pure.
“i can’t handle much more like this. I need you here with me Buck” you held his hands tightly while speaking “i can’t lose you, not for good. you said you’re a mess, but so am i. I need you alive so we can be a mess together”
And this has been your routine for a few days. You spent the day with him until Bobby arrived and practically forces you to go home and rest. And that’s when he didn't bring Athena as a backup and she forced you to go home with her, because they knew you hadn’t been eating or sleeping properly.
But in the meantime, you tried to distract yourself by reading books, watching movies, or trying to tell some jokes to an unconscious Buck. God, you were being pathetic.
You were on your way back to the hospital after a few hours of rest when your phone started ringing non-stop. It was Bobby.
Your heart froze.
Something must have happened.
You didn’t answer the call, you preferred to go straight to the hospital room preparing yourself for the worst. You were confused as you noticed the movement in the room and how the laugher was heard from afar.
“buck?” you ignored everyone and went straight to him. Your hands ran down his face lightly, afraid that if you touched him too hard he would disappear.
“hey y/n” he said softly with that side grin.
“you scared the hell of me. Of us” you whispered getting your face close to him, your hands still touching him. He put his hands over yours.
“I said that i wasn’t giving up on you. You really thought i was going to brake my promise?”
You let out a muffled laugh as tears rolled down your face.
“you idiot. I love you so much” you could see that beautiful smile at his face “please don’t ever do that to me again, I need you here, alive” you murmured and leaned in to planted a quick and shy kiss on his lips. It was your first kiss.
“i love you, princess. I’m not leaving any time soon”
Everyone gathered around you two. Bobby gave you a side hug when you step back so that Christopher could hug Buck. He was like a father to you and Buck, so he was the biggest supporter of you being together, he could see how happy you were when you were together. You both deserved it, you deserved to live this love.
And even though everyone was around him celebrating his return, Buck’s eyes, as usual, were searching for yours, only to be met with your passionate and comforting gaze. Calming every fear and anxiety that could exist inside the firefighter’s heart, as you always did and always would.
After everyone had gone and left you two alone, Buck made room on the bed for you to climb up and snuggle into his side. You couldn’t look away from each other and Buck was giving small pecks on your lips every now and then.
“by the way, you’re a terrible joker”
You stared at him with confusion as he kept smiling.
How on earth did he know you were telling him jokes while he was unconscious?
What you didn’t know, and he probably would never tell you, is that while unconscious, Buck got a glimpse of a life he would never have. A life that made no sense, in a job he hadn’t dreamed of, without the friends he loved so much, and especially without you. You were the reason he fought his way back into this life. He couldn’t continue in a life, in a universe that you didn’t exist.
You were his beacon, who with your light so bright, guided him back to your side. The place he would never leave, never again.

Judge them all or do not judge
I'm not liking what I'm seeing for this fandom right now, I'm seeing so much bullshit about Tommy Kinard... Like the fact that he was an ass previously etc...
Yeah I get it, he wasn't that good, but we only saw him for a few episodes back then, and they were not about him...
But guess what? All the characters did something awful in the past, and guess what again? We "forgave" their faults:
Eddie did flee his wife AND kid because he couldn't do it, like possibly DYING was better than raising his son, yeah father material right there... He then ended up in relationships to find a mother figure, that's manipulation (even if it's for a good cause)
Buck cheated on his girlfriend! He didn't do anything to help Maddie when she was with Doug, like he said himself he should have not ignored the signs, but he did!
Hen cheated on her wife with her ex like no big deal and then went back to Karen...
Bobby was an addict and it stopped him from saving his wife and kids, and he started that fire (not voluntarily of course but it was his negligence...)
Chimney hit Buck because he was protecting his sister and resented him about it! Because he thought he had the right to know where she was...
They all did something that they're not proud of, and I'm sure I'm not remembering everything right now, but we saw them grow, not change but grow with those difficulties and that's perfect, that's why we love them so much.
But Tommy might have been an ass before but he grew too! He came out, and it was implied that he was on better terms with Chimney and Hen so they still talked between episodes. People can grow, and Tommy did too we just didn't see it on our screens and a lot of people are judging him for his past, ok, if you judge Tommy for the man he was, judge all the characters for the person they were before too. Don't just take it out on Tommy because he kissed Buck, that's so hypocritical...

With 7x07 title reveal being "Ghost of a Second Chance" I have some thought because when you first look at it, this title fits every damn couple on the show.
Bathena: It was hard to not think about them first, specially after those emotional lines in episode 02 as this title feels like a direct reminder to it.
B: "Wth was I thinking?! Deserving a second chance like this! I don't deserve you Athena, I never did"
A: "And you're not the only one getting a second chance here"
I do wonder what the term ghost might be about tho, because it does allude to something from the past.
Madney: We're about to see their wedding ceremony, so the show playing with us before it is quite expected, even because Maddie specially got a second chance with Chimney, so ghost of a second chance fits madney very well, specially know their wedding is on this season. Something from the past would be "Doug" related I suppose, maybe it comes to haunt her... Or if we want to be less dark (idk tbh) something goes wrong in the wedding and one of them ends up on the hospital and they get a second chance on the marriage there.
Henren: The writers did tease they would be trying expand their family considering how thing with Nina went, this could very well be about Henren giving a second chance to adoption, or to Karen giving birth considering there was the storyline with the artificial insemination. It could very not well be something related to Eva as unfortunately we know Hen is on her second chance with Karen after cheating.
Buddie: Well, Eddie married the first woman he slept with, had a kid, they struggled a lot and by reasons we know too well she did end up dead on a road. So this could totally mean Eddie giving a second chance on love specially with how his themes in S5 and S6 played with and giving the potential storyline for Buck it would lead to them. Also personally i never believed Marisol was even a thing it would last so.

Not to ramble again but Bobby saying he wasn't looking for Athena when he found her. Athena fresh off a divorce and Bobby still trying to grieve his family.
Maddie and Chim weren't looking for eachother. Maddie had finally fled from Doug and Chim had just came over to help her move in. After everything in S1 and Tatiana I don't think he was exactly looking either.
Hen only went only on the date with Karen bcs Chim set it up and he's her best friend. After all the crap with Ava ASWELL?
Eddie and buck weren't looking for eachother either. Buck wasnt even starting to get over Abby and Eddie was still married to Shannon
And yet regardless they found eachother.
Interestingggg indeed

foaming at the mouth over the nfl au ❤️
I am honestly gobsmacked at how popular NFL Buck is considering American Football isn't the most popular around these parts. So I will never deny sharing a snippet of a much beloved fic. Here is a bit from the Ocean's 911 arc.
Eddie tries his damndest not to squirm under Hen and Chimney's annoyed glares. He shouldn't have said a word. He should have lied and said something along the lines of 'Yea my house was searched too. Was up all night cleaning.' But nope. He was honest to a fault and possibly now considered a traitor. "Why pray tell were you excluded from the search warrant?" Hen asks with a slight scowl. He clears his throat and looks anywhere but towards his fellow firefighters, "I have a good lawyer." Correction, Buck has a good lawyer and the moment he heard about the police wanting to question Eddie, Kameron's car was booked. "Uh huh. The blonde in the Armani pants suit and killer stilettos?" Hen questioned. "Mmhm. Her names Kameron Kane. Do you um, want her card? She could probably help the rest ya'll out." That earned another scowl from Hen and a snort of discontent from Chimney, "Pretty sure we can't afford the same lawyer that represents several professional athletes and other millionaires." Chim remarks. Eddie winces and grips his coffee cup tighter. Kameron was well known now a days, but when Eddie first met her, she had literally barged her way into Buck's room, drunk and bawling her eyes out about Connor, Buck's roommate at the time. She was only a first year law student and didn't even blink at seeing the future NFL star naked in bed with another man. Just stuck her clammy hand out, when she did notice Eddie and said, "I'm Kameron, Connor's-whatever. How the hell did Buck score you?" And became one of their closets friends. Evan hired Kameron the moment she passed the bar and immediately fired the lawyer on Maddie's self-defense case, replacing his misogynistic ass with Kameron. She won, made Maddie a national icon, and insured every dollar of Doug's estate went to the brave woman. Kameron's been building her empire ever since and she was a glaring link between him and Evan Buckley. So he really hoped his co-workers don't follow it to back to the quarterback. "Sorry. Honestly she told them that I really don't have much of a motive." Translation: The detectives found out during their investigation that Eddie was Evan Buckley's partner and robbing a bank for the amount of money that was missing was barely a drop compared to Buck's income. As for the diamonds, more than affordable for the millionaire quarterback (just look at Maddie's jewelry collection). The detectives probably also kept their search warrants away from Eddie after Kameron threatened to sue the entire department if even minute whisper about Evan's private relationship got out. Police showing up to the quarterback's home to search it would have been much louder.

ok stay with me here but: (loose) anastasia (1997) au
evan buckley: the missing, presumed dead, youngest child of the beloved/beloathed buckley family, all of whom were murdered when he was a kid—all except his older sister. except he’s alive, with the unfortunate downside of total amnesia, and nothing to tie him to anyone except a broken something that just reads: buck. so buck grows up alone, and it sucks, especially because it’s not all he’s ever known. he might not have his memories but he knows he's known what love is. home, love, family. there was once a time i must’ve had them too. home, love, family. i will never be complete until i find you.
maddie buckley: only daughter of the buckley family, fell in love with a bad man who tried to kill her whole family to get to her. got away and got safe. doesn’t know if doug’s alive. her brother’s probably dead. surviving’s not the same as living, and she’s been doing it for so long. but… have you heard… there’s a rumour in los angeles. she’s got the best and the brightest protecting her, and all that buckley family money. spreading them both thin could mean doug worming his way out of the woodwork but if there’s even a chance evan’s really out there? she’s already decided.
eddie diaz: conman, but more importantly, dad. there was a war, and then another one, and his wife left, and somewhere in there his parents took his kid from him. he does not have the money to fight them with lawyers, but he’s stubborn and not particularly respectful of the law and he’s heard that maddie buckley’s protective service team has means and money that allow for a) duking it out in court with his parents or b) getting his kid back in ways that are more uh legally grey. and it just so happens the rumours are that maddie buckley will do just about anything and pay just about any sum to find her long-lost brother. blond-haired, blue-eyed, missing at age 10—nearly two decades ago. he could look like anyone, now. sure, there’s the distinctive red birthmark over his eyebrow, but makeup and tattooing go a long way these days. oh, and conveniently, his partner in literal crime, however mild, has an old inside link with someone on maddie buckley’s bodyguard team. chim never shuts up about henrietta wilson—hen, he calls her—particularly when eddie’s fumbling a job and having to improvise and he feels the need to point out just how competent his previous partner steadfastly was.
if eddie and chim are holding illicit auditions for evan buckley lookalikes, and this massive beautiful man stumbles in apparently already having gone to the trouble of dressing for the part? who is eddie to look that gift horse in the mouth? the quicker they see this con through, the quicker he’s together with chris again.
except buck thinks eddie really believes he’s maddie buckley’s missing brother, and buck is warm and ridiculous and so genuinely curious about eddie’s own family, on this journey to find his own, and eddie can’t help but share christopher, and buck listens with bright eyes and holds the photographs so carefully in his big hands.
cons are never victimless, and eddie knows getting chris back takes priority over any moral quandary of identity theft here.
but buck asks about chris’s favourite things and stays up late on their crosscountry train to come up with plans for an accessible skateboard for a kid he’s never met. buck tells eddie he wonders if maddie’ll recognise him, and he hopes she does, because he’s never had anyone see him and know him before. buck asks eddie if he thinks they’ll stay friends, once they’re both reunited with their families. it’ll be nice not to have to miss anyone again, he tells eddie one night, quiet. missing who you don’t remember is one thing. missing who you know?
he trails off and falls asleep not long after, but eddie lies awake in the bunk below him for hours. his moral compass has always swung with whatever cognitive dissonance necessary to justify his actions because the final truth is: heart over mind. and chris has always been his whole heart. so falling in love with your mark has got to be the stupidest, most dangerous thing you can do.
even this is okay; he can handle breaking part of his own heart. but he didn’t realise he was holding so much of buck’s too, and now? he doesn’t know that he can survive breaking any of that.

This is for my Buddie friends. My buddies, if you will.
I'm recently super in love with Eddie and Buck are already married when Buck joins the 118 and it just never comes up. Or they don't believe him. Or I don't know. It doesn't matter. Whatever the reason, the 118 fam and friends don't know that Buck is married. I've been reading fics like this recently. They're fun.
But there also aren't very many of them. So, first of all, if you have any recs, please send them to me.
Second of all, I had to come up with my own idea for something like this so keep reading to see what it is.
Trigger Warnings: canon typical violence and abuse (Maddie and Doug plus Buck), life threatening situations typical and atypical to the show, witness protection, Eddie potentially thinking Buck is dead so maybe tempory character death, and I think I'm going to make it where the Buckley parents are killed in a car accident or something. I would tag more things if I actually wrote this or anything.
So. Let's start at the beginning. Evan and Maddie Buckley are living with their parents when Doug comes into the picture. Maddie is so in love with him, it's a little concerning. At least, according to her parents. They are very adamant that she needs to stop seeing him.
She doesn't. She fights them tooth and nail to be with Doug. Her little brother Evan is torn between supporting her and agreeing with their parents. But he's young. He doesn't understand.
Sadly, their parents are killed in a car accident. Maddie fights to keep Buck and she's able to become his legal guardian. Doug becomes the dad Buck always wanted. For a while, it's good. It's great even. They're a small little family, but they're so, so happy. It's amazing.
Until it isn't. Until Doug shows his true colors. He gets so angry so fast. And might be young but he's not stupid. He knows that Maddie is hurting. So he starts acting out. When Doug is mad at him, he leaves Maddie alone. That's all that Evan cares about. If only he could do more. But for Maddie, he can at least be the one who ends up in the ER. Not her.
But Maddie can't let him keep doing this. She has to protect her little brother. They live in this horrible limbo for a few years until Evan is 18. He crashed his new bike that Doug bought for him. He's going to be so mad. He has to warn Maddie. Or maybe... maybe he can convince her to leave with him.
"You and me, Maddie. Come on. Let's go. Just the two of us."
And she wants to leave. She does. But she knows that Doug won't let them. Won't let her. But she agrees. She knows what she has to do. The next day, she watches him leave in the Jeep. She's battered and bruised, but watching him leave actually feels like a weight lifting off her chest.
Evan travels. He goes everywhere he can, trying to find somewhere he belongs. He worries about Maddie every day and sends post cards to her work so she knows he's okay. She holds onto them like a lifeline.
Evan eventually ends up in Texas. That's where he meets Eddie. Helping out on a ranch. It's hard work, harder than anything else he's done up to this point. But being there with Eddie actually makes it fun. He never wants to leave. He even gets invited over to the Diaz house where he meets a tiny little Christopher. The Diaz family is the one he always wanted. So warm and fill of love. They take him in, teach him Spanish, teach him how to make the best food. Teach him about family.
It's no surprise to anyone when he and Eddie start dating. He keeps Maddie updated through his post cards until one day he gets one in return. He recognizes her hand writing. She says she's so happy for him. And how she wishes she could meet Eddie and his son. But she also says that Buck shouldn't send her anymore cards. How Doug found one and how he had wanted to go to that place and bring Evan back home.
And, well, Evan can't do that. He needs to let Maddie know that he's okay. So every so often him and Eddie take a little road trip to send a postcard to Maddie from somewhere else. Just to let her know he's okay. Plus, him and Eddie are going to get married and she has to be there.
But on the day they're supposed to get married there's no sign of her. He's disappointed but he doesn't let it get him down. He's marrying his best friend. He's adopting a son. His life couldn't get any better.
And then, of course, it all comes crashing down. Maddie's friend at the hospital, her only friend there, calls Evan.
"Maddie hasn't been to work in a couple days. She hasn't called or anything. I'm worried about her."
Evan has to leave. Eddie wants to come with him, but Evan won't have his family anywhere near Doug. And he's coming back with his sister this time.
Long story, short, Evan goes back home to check on Maddie. She's hurt when he finds her and he's already called 9-1-1 when Doug finds them. It's ugly. And they watch Doug kill someone. One of their neighbour's I guess. And the police show up. And they're all rushed to the hospital. And they're met with even more police. And the FBI. Turns out Doug wasn't just the bad guy. He was A bad guy. A bad guy in a whole family of bad guys.
And so Buck and Maddie have to go into Witness Protection until Doug and his family are taken care of for good. Evan doesn't even get to say goodbye to Eddie and Christopher. He just gets carried away to a new place to start a new life.
Alone.
He ends up in Los Angeles, CA. He's going crazy. He can't talk to Maddie or Eddie or Christopher. He can talk to his agent. That's about it. Despite his agents better judgement, he goes out for the fire department. He's too restless to do anything else. He has to help someone. He needs to do something useful. Meaningful.
And that's how Kyle "Buck" Jones joined the 118. How'd he get his nickname? No one knows.

Enjoy.

A cheesy, lopsided grin flooded Evan's face when he opened his eyes and took a look around.
God, he felt like a child.
He felt like the biggest kid in the room, flooded with adrenaline and wide awake despite only just waking up. He was always the same whenever he went on holiday and it didn't matter where he was or who he had gone away with. Despite his turbulent relationship with his parents, Evan had been flying high whenever they used to go on little family holidays.
He had been over the moon when he and Maddie used to go on little weekend trips together when he was a teen and she was in nursing school. He lived for the weekends where she would come down and take him to the beach. Or when he was in college and the pair of them saved up and took a trip abroad, without Doug.
Evan had never been in a steady relationship long enough to go away with a partner; not until he got together with Eddie and (Y/n).
The three of them had taken a short trip away not long after they all got together, just the three of them. It had been the only holiday they went on without any kids because not long after that, they had Lois. Since then, all their holidays had been family vacations and it was something Evan loved. He loved taking the kids away and spending time going on hikes or in the pool or sitting on the beach with them.
Evan loved his family more than anything and he loved being on holiday with them. And this was their first holiday with Tilly.
"Morning," He couldn't hide the giddiness from his voice and he tilted his head down to look at one of his partners.
Eddie was curled up into Evan's side, an arm draped over his waist and his head laid out in the middle of Evan's chest. Evan could feel his boyfriend's curls tickling his neck and chin and he felt Eddie grumble something incoherent into his chest.
He pressed a sloppy kiss to the top of Eddie's head and began smoothing his hand up and down Eddie's bare back. Both of them had gone to sleep in their boxers. The heat outside was stiffling and they had to turn the A/C right up so cold air was blasting through the room all night so none of them melted.
"Are we gonna get up?"
"Nope." Eddie grumbled back into Evan's chest, pressing a soft kiss there before he nuzzled back down. He didn't bother opening his eyes. He didn't want to get up yet.
"Papa, are we going up for breakfast now?"
A grin spread across Evan's lips again and he stretched his arm out to grab his phone from the side table. It was past nine. They didn't usually sleep in this late when they were on holiday. Especially not Eddie, even on his days off Eddie's body clock usually got him up around seven or earlier.
Evan looked around the room that was cast in a dim glow from the closed curtains. He looked across to the right side of the room where the bunk beds were.
The kids were starting to wake up. Lois was on the top bunk and she was laid with her head and arms on the railing and a wide grin on her features which crinkled her eyes. And when Evan looked down, he could see Chris starting to stir on the bottom bunk.
"Yep, we're getting breakfast, girlie. Babe, come on." Evan pressed another kiss to the top of Eddie's head and held onto him while he started to sit up, forcing Eddie to sit up too.
A groan burned at the back of Eddie's throat and he could feel his head spinning the moment he sat up. He flopped his head back on Evan's shoulder and tried to open his eyes, but he felt like going straight back to sleep for another day. Or two. Or three.
Eddie quietly whined when Evan kissed him and proceeded to get out of bed. He didn't want to get up yet.
Who's bright idea was it to go on a cruise?
Eddie never realised he had a problem with being on the sea until the boat started moving. They all boarded the boat just fine late on Monday afternoon, but when it began to move in the evening, Eddie didn't feel so great. Neither did (Y/n) when she laid in bed and could feel the room dipping from left to right.
Then in the morning, they had been on rough tides and things didn't go so well. Eddie got halfway down the hall and had to turn around, crawl back to the room and throw up. (Y/n) tried taking the kids for lunch on deck with Evan but halfway up the stairs, a mixture of vertigo and sickness washed over her and Evan had to catch her before she fell. He ended up carrying her the rest of the way up the stairs and carrying her back to the room like she was drunk.
Chris and Lois had been fine, they seemed to take after Evan and were happy running about as if the swaying boat was normal and it didn't affect them at all.
Ava started to feel queasy into the evening and Tilly, their youngest, was unsettled last night.
Evan took all four kids to dinner last night and when they came back into the cabin at seven o'clock, both Eddie and (Y/n) were fast asleep. So Evan took the kids out for a walk in the night sea air.
"Come on, get your sea legs. We're supposed to be going in the pool today." Evan stood up and stretched his arms above his head.
He laughed and glanced across his shoulder when he began to walk away from the bed and Eddie reached out to slap his behind. He advanced over to the bunk beds and waited patiently for Lois and Chris to climb out of bed before he helped them pick out some clothes.
Eddie rubbed his eyes with the base of his hand and stood up, but he only walked three paces over to the other double bed in the room. With a hefty sigh, he flopped down on his stomach on the other bed where (Y/n) and Ava were just beginning to stir.
They had Lois and Chris in the bunk beds, Tilly was in the cot beneath the window. And since there were two double beds, they all decided to switch between the beds each night, depending on how tired they were and where they flopped down at the end of the night. Last night Eddie distinctly remembered falling asleep in bed with (Y/n), but he'd passed out for the full twelve hours.
And he woke up with Evan instead, meaning (Y/n) got up at some point to tend to the kids and ended up in the other bed with Ava.
"How are you girls doing?" He gruffed quietly while he flopped his right arm out and draped it across (Y/n)'s waist.
He reeled her close and shimmied from his stomach to lay on his left side, with (Y/n)'s back pressed up against his chest. His hand slipped beneath her pyjama top and he started to dance his fingers across her bump while he tilted his head down to kiss the back of her head.
"Bit better… still feel queasy though." (Y/n) couldn't be sure whether she was really feeling sea sick or if she was experiencing prolonged morning sickness which the boat was making worse.
They hadn't exactly planned for (Y/n) to be twenty weeks pregnant when they booked this holiday. But (Y/n) was thrilled she wasn't any further along. She didn't have a massive bump yet and other than morning sickness, she was doing okay. She could still get in the pool with the kids and walk round and they could leave the boat and go on excursions. The timing had worked out rather well.
(Y/n) groggily opened her eyes and leaned back into Eddie when Evan leaned on the other side of the bed and hovered over them. She smiled as Evan planted his hands down on the bed, kissed the top of Ava's head and leaned over to kiss (Y/n)'s lips.
"Are you lot getting up, we're all hungry?"
"Bring us back something to eat… please?" Eddie added a quick please on the end when he watched Evan smirk.
"What can you actually stomach?"
"Fruit."
Evan pressed another kiss to (Y/n)'s lips and a quick kiss to Eddie before he pushed up. He could see Ava was a bit too groggy to get up whereas he, Chris and Lois were all dressed and ready for breakfast. They could go and eat together and bring the rest of them back some fruit and a bit of toast. He knew by the time they got back, the rest of them would be up and ready.
When the bedroom door closed, they gave themselves another ten minutes to lie down and try to wake up before they bothered to get up and see how they felt.
Eddie dared to stand up and take a moment to see if his legs felt stronger and if his stomach felt more natural. He and (Y/n) had missed dinner last night which should have settled their systems. This would be their second day at sea, they should feel better by now and feel more acquainted at being on the waves.
He turned the music channel on the tv and moved to open the curtains, looking at the rolling waves actually made him feel a little better.
"Do you feel okay, mi amor?" Eddie held his hands out and carefully helped (Y/n) up. His hands moved to her waist and he held her close, pecking her lips when she smiled and nodded.
Twelve hours of sleep had done them both the world of good.
"A lot better… are we going swimming this morning?"
When Eddie nodded, (Y/n) knew they were both having the same idea. They may as well get dressed into their swim gear. No point taking the time to get dressed if all the kids were going to insist on going in the pool right after breakfast. They would probably spend the majority of the day in the pool; they all loved the pool and they were at sea today. The boat wouldn't port anywhere until tomorrow at midday.
"I've got the baby," He murmured against her lips and headed round to the cot where Tilly was beginning to stir. "Hi girlie,"
"Daddy," The two year old held her arms out expectingly and grinned when Eddie scooped her up and murmured 'Let's go get a shower' against her ruffled hair.
"Can we go in the pool now?" Chris swung his and Evan's entwined hands back and forth between them and stared up at his other dad. He smiled brightly when Evan grinned down at him as they walked down the stairs. He was letting Chris lead the way towards the room. The kids needed to remember and be able to find their way back to the cabin since they were going to be on this boat for almost two weeks.
"Sure, we'd better make sure everyone else is up and ready."
Evan cast his eyes down to his left where Lois was walking a step ahead of him. If she wasn't carrying a plate of fruit and toast, she would have been running down the corridor towards the room. But she had decided she wanted to bring the food back for her parents.
Evan knew the kids would be as desperate as he was to get in the pool today, they hadn't gone in yesterday. They had taken time to get used to where everything was on the boat. They'd done a quiz in one of the lounge rooms, played basketball while (Y/n) and Eddie sunbathed and felt seasick with Tilly. And then they watched a show until they all retired to bed.
Today was their day in the pool. Evan was already wearing his swim trunks, and so was Chris. And Lois was in her costume beneath her rainbow dress.
Reaching in his back pocket, Evan found the room keycard and swiped it over the door, letting the two of them walk in first.
A smile flooded Evan's face when he looked across at Ava. She had moved one of the chairs up next to the crib so she could stare out the window. Both her hands were pressed up against the glass along with her nose so she could stare out at the blue waves that rolled by and it made Evan's heart melt. None of the kids had been on a boat like this before.
All Ava could see was a mix of hazy turquoise blue with swirls of seaweed green which blended into the pastel blue colour of the sky. There were clouds rolling by in the distance, mingling with the mist in the far distance where a patch of rain was pulling in.
"Hungry, daddy?" Lois approached the bed Eddie was leaning over and placed the plate of fruit and toast beside him. She laid on her stomach on the bed and grinned when Eddie leaned across to kiss her temple. She could see he had gotten up and had a shower, his hair was still damp, he smelled of his usual leather scent shower gel. And he was now wearing his jet black swim trunks and a matching black vest.
"I am, thank you baby girl." He pinched a slice of toast and took a large bite before he looked down at Tilly with raised brows. The toddler was laid out on the bed on her back, sporadically kicking her legs out in front of her while Eddie tried to get her changed. "Alright cheeky, come on help me out."
Reaching down, Eddie scooped Tilly up and stood the two year old up in the middle of the bed once her legs were finally in her swim suit. He pulled the costume up and wrangled her arms into it, pulling it tight over her shoulders as Tilly started bouncing and bending her knees.
"Beautiful." He whispered softly and took the scrunchie off his wrist to gather Tilly's hair up in the middle of her head. Her thin wisps of hair gathered together and looked like an antenna spiked up, but it was an adorable look on her.
With a kiss to her cheek, Eddie handed her a slice of toast and set her down on the floor and he tossed an apple over to Ava. She needed to eat something before they got in the pool. Eddie took another bite of toast and slipped his sunglasses on top of his hair, but his lips quirked into a baiting smile when he watched (Y/n) walk out the bathroom.
And when Evan turned to the side and caught sight of her, he let out a low wolf-whistle and his lips formed into a wide smirk.
The teal blue two-piece (Y/n) had on was new; the boys hadn't seen her wearing it until now. It tied in a neat bow at the back of her neck and cut low down her chest. And the underwear that matched had a thin, string bow for decoration on each hip.
She was wearing a see through white swim shawl over the top. The material was paper thin but very soft, it hung just off her shoulders and stopped a few inches past her hips across her thighs.
(Y/n) leaned a hand on the wall so she could slip into her sandals, but her eyes looked herself up and down a few times. She wanted to bring her usual red and white swimsuit, but with her baby bump she wouldn't have been able to fit into it. And if she did, it would have been way too tight. The only option (Y/n) had was this two piece. And she wasn't sure about walking around showing off her stomach.
It was all well and normal to have the boy's hands and eyes lingering on her when she was pregnant, this was her fourth pregnancy. But (Y/n) was always self conscious when she was around strangers.
She wasn't used to going swimming when she was pregnant, but (Y/n) didn't want to be the only one not going in the pool. She could always sit in the shallow end with Tilly or even just sit on the edge and dip her legs in the pool.
"Will I do?" She murmured softly, gasping when Evan hooked an arm around her waist and pulled her closer.
"You look beautiful." He pressed a searing kiss to her lips and sank his teeth into her lower lip before he felt Chris tug on his shorts with a whine. The kids were rearing to go, they were starting to get impatient.
"Are we ready, troop?"
With a grin, Eddie tossed a banana across to (Y/n) so she would eat something before he looked around their family. He had Lois stood on his left, already holding his hand and swaying on his arm and he reached out onto the bed for the bag he had packed a few minutes ago. It had towels, Tilly's pull-ups and dummies and wipes in, a beaker for her, and space so they could keep their clothes dry while they were in the pool.
He hooked the bag on his shoulder and reached out for Ava who gladly took his other hand and moved towards the door.
"Come're baby," Evan reached down for Tilly when she tried to toddle after Eddie. He wasn't letting her walk around, she would get sidetracked and take her time and if she ran ahead of them she would definitely bump into people.
He smiled at the swimsuit Eddie had gotten Tilly changed into. She was wearing her lilac swim costume with blue and green flowers dotted around it and her cheeky smile was a match for Evan's.
"Pretty baby," He cooed when he picked her up and sat her high up on his chest so she could loop her arms around his neck.
(Y/n) rested her hand on Chris's shoulder and followed out after him, double-checking that both boys had a keycard each for the room so they didn't get locked out before they left. They headed down the corridor in a line and (Y/n) smiled as she and Chris moved ahead to catch up with Eddie.
Both Chris and Ava trotted ahead and waited at the bottom of the stairs for everyone else to catch them up. And when Eddie squeezed her hand, Lois ran ahead to follow the two of them. All the kids knew they could run ahead as long as they stayed within sight and were careful of other people passing by.
"Looking good." Eddie whispered with a grin and he moved his hand to rest on the small of (Y/n)'s back as they started to climb up the stairs.
"Thank you." (Y/n) grinned, poking her tongue between her teeth as she hooked her finger into Eddie's shorts and gave a sharp tug, letting the elastic snap back against his hips. She leaned her head back and looked up at Evan as they all ascended up the stairs.
"Least you two can walk today, although I'll carry you if you want me to." He leaned his cheek on top of Tilly's head, barely breaking a sweat as they climbed up four flights of stairs to get to the top deck. It was a relief to see Eddie and (Y/n) both climbing the stairs and not swaying to one side or looking like they were about to throw up. Clearly they were finally adjusting to being at sea.
Evan was the only one who had his sea legs from the moment they stepped on board. But he had always been a natural with water; he had tried out for the navy at one point too.
As soon as the three kids got to the top and ran out into the sunshine, they came to a stop and turned round. Ava had hold of Chris's hand, the five year old was always afraid of being left behind or becoming lost. And Chris never minded guiding his younger sister along and holding her hand to keep her safe.
"Which way?"
"Left, we're off to the outdoor pool."
It felt good to be out in the sunshine. They all knew if the weather had been stormy and raining, it would have dampened their day since they couldn't leave the ship. But standing out on deck with the sun blistering hot and a slight breeze cutting around them felt lovely.
(Y/n) felt Evan's hand move to her shoulder as they walked single-file, weaving between the plastic tables and chairs set out for breakfast.
They walked through a set of doors, passed through an indoor dining area and headed back out into the sunshine towards the pool.
There weren't as many people out here as Eddie expected. He figured some of the older people may have gone into one of the lounge bars, there were a lot of quizzes on throughout the day and music shows. Entertainment was a big thing since they weren't at any ports today.
"No running." Eddie's voice was loud and stern enough to stop all three kids in front of him. They came to an abrupt stop and glanced over their shoulders to watch Eddie arch a brow at them before he flipped his sunglasses down over his eyes. He didn't want them running round here. There was water everywhere from people getting in and out of the pool and from the boat swaying side to side, sloshing the chlorine about.
If the kids ran along here they would skid, and Chris didn't have his crutches which made him more unsteady on his feet. They didn't want any accidents on this holiday.
His lips curved into a grin and he looked to the left when he felt (Y/n)'s hand slip into his and she curled her free hand around his arm. She didn't want to slip either. Her head leaned on Eddie's shoulder and she pressed a soft kiss there while he followed over to the four deck chairs the kids had comandeered for them. Right in front of the pool.
"Pool!" Tilly bashed her hand down excitedly on Evan's shoulder and started to squirm when he peppered kisses against her cheek.
"Let's get ready, then."
Evan sat down on the end of one of the navy blue deck chairs and stood Tilly between his legs. He pinned his knees into her sides so she couldn't try and run off anywhere without him or else she would end up in the pool unsupervised.
He whipped off his shirt and tossed it over to Eddie since he had the bag and kicked his shoes beneath the deck chair.
(Y/n) slipped off her sandals and curled her legs beneath her on the chair, taking a moment to look around. There was a large screen just above the dining area, playing random eighties music videos. And there were a few other families with young children about which was good for the kids if they wanted to mingle. Not that many of them would, they were all too shy for that.
"Glasses please," (Y/n) held her hand out towards Chris and put his glasses on the small plastic table beside her chair. He didn't need to wear them when he was in the pool.
All the kids were eager to get in. Chris had taken off his shirt and shoes, Lois and Ava had stripped their dresses and tossed them at Eddie and Tilly was squealing. None of them wanted to wait.
"I'll take some pictures of you all."
"You not coming in yet?" Eddie took off his glasses and stood up just as Lois grabbed his hand, trying her best to direct him towards the pool.
"Not yet, I'll join you all in a bit." (Y/n) needed to wake up a little more first and the kids could burn some energy with Eddie and Evan first. Then (Y/n) would get in and probably stay in the shallow end with Tilly and stick to paddling with her for a while.
She smiled when Eddie leaned down to peck her lips and she felt Evan kiss the back of her head before they moved towards the pool.
"Ava, with me please baby." Evan held his hand out and shimmied Tilly higher up on his left hip. Ava couldn't swim well yet, she would need to stay in the shallow end with him and Tilly. Whereas Chris and Lois were fairly good and could go further in with Eddie.
Eddie sucked in a deep breath when he climbed down the steps. God, it was freezing. He tensed his shoulders and held his breath before he sank down and submerged under the water to get it over with. If he didn't the kids would splash him and shock his system. He could feel shakes rattling through him and he grinned when he broke through the surface and Lois climbed in, squealing at how cold it was.
He began doing laps with Chris while Lois followed alone doing backstrokes. Every now and then, Eddie looked across at the shallow end and he grinned. He and Evan were going to have to swap soon, it wasn't fair to leave Evan in the shallow end and Ava got clingy when she got nervous in the pool.
Evan knelt down on the bottom of the pool and held Tilly just above the surface so she was laid on his palms on her tummy. She was kicking her legs out and splashing her arms, grinning when Evan turned her in circles to make it seem like she was actually swimming.
"Papa,"
"Come here then," He waved a hand out towards Ava, she had been swimming from one side of the shallow end to the other.
He watched with a grin as she held her head high and tried to swim over to him. He was still in the shallow end but he was more towards the middle since he had been swimming around in random patterns, weaving between the other people in here. There weren't many people in the middle.
As soon as she reached him, she wrapped her arms around his neck and clung to his shoulders so tightly she almost pushed Evan under the surface.
"Papa- papa don't let go!"
"Ava, baby it's not deep." Evan cringed when Ava pressed her chest into his back and dug her arms tight around his neck. She would just about touch the floor if she put her legs down. She wasn't going to drown if she stayed around this level and didn't go any further.
He couldn't hold onto her and keep hold of Tilly at the same time, not without a struggle.
"Baby, come round here, I won't let go I promise."
He struggled to lean back and he tilted Tilly high up on his chest with her head on his shoulder while he curved his right arm behind him and held onto Ava. He weaved her round through the water and smiled when he had them both on his chest. That was better.
He lifted his legs up and took a deep breath, floating on his back to keep the girls in front of him and above the water.
Leaning forward, (Y/n) sighed and pulled the thin swim shawl over her head and laid it out behind her on the deck chair so people would know it was occupied. She smoothed her palm across her stomach, as if making sure the baby wasn't about to wake up and come alive, before she pushed up and slowly padded across towards the pool.
Her eyes landed on Eddie as he and Chris had a race back to the side of the pool. He was clearly hanging back to let Chris go ahead of him and the sight made (Y/n)'s heart melt.
She walked over to the edge of the pool and slowly sank down until she was sat on the side with her legs dangling in the water. She slowly kicked her legs back and forth, smiling when the boys swam over to her. Chris patted her thigh and beamed up at her when she dragged her fingers through his messy curls and pushed them away from his eyes.
"You're doing good, baby." She pecked his temple, but her attention turned back to Eddie when he swam over.
His hands immediately found her thighs and raked up towards her hips and he stood between her thighs, leaning up into her with a shark-tooth grin. His elbows pinned down on her thighs and (Y/n) could feel his fingers digging into her hips while he attached his lips to her stomach.
"Coming in yet?" He murmured against her stomach, smiling at the shiver that tore through (Y/n) while she ran her fingers through his hair.
All the water dripped onto (Y/n)'s legs and stuck to her stomach, but she didn't mind. She would get in the pool soon and join them.
"I will once I get a drink, you boys want one?"
"Nope; just you."
"Eddie-" She tried to warn him when she felt his hands rake down to grip her bum. But her arms deadlocked around his neck and she gasped when he pushed back and dragged her down off the side. Her legs hooked around his hips and she closed her eyes, feeling the water flip over them both like a tidal wave.
The cold water completely drenched her and had her body shaking as Eddie pushed up so she didn't completely submerge beneath the surface. He let her lean into his chest that rumbled as he laughed into her neck.
"You twat." She hissed in his ear but she couldn't hide her grin as she unlocked one arm from around him to push her soaked hair back on her head, away from her eyes.
Her hands moved to cup his face and she pulled him close, taking a deep kiss from his lips that she bit down on to make him groan. She grazed her foot down along his thigh so she could swat her foot against his bum in the water before she tried to stand up and uncurl from around him.
"I'm getting a drink."
The small smile on (Y/n)'s lips told Eddie she wasn't annoyed; she couldn't stop herself from smiling despite now being drenched from head to toe. With adrenaline shooting through her blood and the baby twisting and livening up in her stomach.
She kissed Lois's temple on her slow walk through the water towards her other man and the girls.
Her hands found Evan's shoulders and she attached her lips to the side of his neck, smiling at the girls. Tilly was sat in the shallow end, happily splashing her arms out in the water. And Ava was sat down a little further into the shallow water where Evan was knelt in front of her.
"Anyone need a drink?"
"Please- did you do a dive or something?" Evan dragged his eyes up and down (Y/n)'s frame while he curved an arm around her waist and reeled her into his chest. She didn't normally go straight in the deep end and she was drenched from head to toe like the rest of them.
"Daddy pulled mum in." Lois answered as she shook her head to get the water out her ears.
"Oh. I guess he woke someone up then?" His arm curved tighter around her waist so he could press his hand against her stomach where the baby was wriggling. He felt (Y/n) hum into his neck that she started to kiss before she looked back down at the girls.
"Ava, you and Tilly can come and get a drink with me… why don't you four play chicken?"
(Y/n) reached out for Tilly and hoisted her up. The two year old was starting to try and drink the water and if she did that she would make herself sick. She could have a break and get a drink and Ava could let Evan have a break since she had been clinging to him since the moment they got in the pool.
"Papa, can we?" Lois tugged on Evan's hand when he nodded. There weren't many people in the pool meaning they had the space for Eddie and Evan to have a kid on their shoulders to try and push each other into the water.
"Sure," He leaned down and held both Lois's hands, grinning madly as she screamed in delight when Evan effortlessly swung her up and sat her on his shoulders. The seven year old held his biceps to stay steady on his shoulders and she could hear Eddie shouting 'Oh no' as he moved to get Chris so they could gear up for a game.
(Y/n) sucked in a deep breath as she looked up at Evan, where Lois excitedly squealed "Get a video mummy!"
"I will baby, I promise." She pulled her lower lip between her teeth to obscure her smile when Evan pushed up from his knees to stand tall in the pool. Water poured off of him in gushes and the sun shone down on him and made his radiant smile beam and shine out. His eyes squinted from the combined water and bright rays of sun.
And stood there with his chest out, his arms tense and bulging and their eldest daughter on his shoulders, he made (Y/n)'s knees go weak.
She let him reach one hand out for her and hold her chin, tilting her head back enough so he could lean down for a kiss. He balanced Lois expertly on his shoulders so he could steal (Y/n)'s breath as he kissed her. His chest panted when he pulled back, but he started to laugh when Tilly reached out for him.
"Jealous bum," He mumbled as Tilly grabbed him a little roughly by the face, patting her hands on his cheeks as she pulled him close so she could have a kiss too. She was never one to be left out.
"Ava, come on sweetie."
(Y/n) set Tilly down on her feet and held her hand while she held her other hand out for Ava.
The three of them toddled towards the bar with (Y/n) slightly stooped over so she could keep hold of Tilly. The youngest girl was a menace and she would wander off wherever she wanted if someone didn't pick her up or hold her hand.
When they got to the bar, (Y/n) leaned down and scooped Tilly up so she could sit the toddler down on the bar. She nudged her nose against Tilly's cheek and gave her a kiss, arching her back out while her arms curved around her littlest girl.
"What are you having, sweetie?"
"Coke please… mummy they're playing." Ava tugged on (Y/n)'s arm and leaned up against her leg.
She moved her arms so they were wrapped around (Y/n)'s stomach and she gently kissed her tummy, causing her mum to smile down at her. She stayed leaning against her mum while her eyes focused on the pool.
Evan had Lois on his shoulders, Eddie was holding up Chris and both kids had locked hands and were currently pushing each other to try and knock the other into the pool. Ava let out a loud, excited squeal when she watched Lois give Chris a hard push and he and Eddie yelled as they toppled backwards and dunked under the surface.
"Papa and Lois won!"
Evan gave Lois's sides a squeeze and grinned up at her as she leaned down to kiss his temple.
They both watched Eddie and Chris resurface and Eddie shook his head, groaning as he tried to rid the water from his eyes and shake it loose from his eyes and his hair. He dragged his fingers through his hair as he swam closer until he was in front of them.
"Okay, next round is ours." Eddie tilted Evan's chin up so he could snatch a kiss and drag a finger across his jaw.
He shuffled back a few paces and hunched down so Chris could climb back onto his shoulders. "Come on, dad, we have to win."
"Mum, can I go record them?" Ava leaned back so she could look up at (Y/n) and she gently took the plastic cup of coke she was handed. She knew whenever they played games like this, someone always recorded them. And she knew both her dads would want to send the pictures and videos across to their auntie Hen and auntie Karen.
"Go on then."
Turning round, (Y/n) pressed a sloppy kiss to Tilly's cheek as she gently set the toddler down in front of her legs. She could see Ava trotting over to the deck chairs so she could find (Y/n)'s phone in her bag.
(Y/n) grabbed the tray of drinks and held them up high so she could see where Tilly was and keep an eye on her. She couldn't carry the drinks and Tilly and she couldn't put Tilly in the pool yet without supervision. She smiled when she saw Ava sat cross-legged on one of the chairs, drink in one hand and camera in the other as she recorded their family.
"Tilly, come here please." She kept her voice stern so Tilly would listen; all the kids listened whenever the boys talked in that tone of voice.
"Daddy, daddy." She paused for a moment and turned to look back at (Y/n) before she pointed ahead.
"He's in the pool. Wait for me."
She rounded the side of the deck chair and placed the tray of drinks down. It was easier to get all the kids and the boys a drink because (Y/n) knew once they got out, they would down a drink each and then climb straight back in. She could see Ava had downed most of her coke already.
"Tilly." (Y/n) hissed and weaved around the deck chair to hurry after her youngest who wasn't listening.
Her little eyes had locked on both her dads and her other two siblings and she was on a mission to get to them.
"Well, push." Eddie all but groaned as he looked up at Chris and urged him to move and put a little more effort into it. He needed to knock Lois over or she and Evan would have two games up on them. They needed to win at least one round before they switched partners and Eddie had Lois on his team.
He gave Chris's hips a squeeze and tried to stand up a bit taller to give Chris more of an advantage since he was taller than Lois. But Evan simply grinned and pushed up on his toes to make Lois that much higher in retaliation.
Eddie glanced his eyes to the left for a split second and his eyes landed on (Y/n) walking over with a few drinks. He smiled to himself and looked back at Evan who seemed determined to win another game.
But Eddie's stance froze and his eyes snapped to the left again when he heard Tilly scream.
A thunderous splash echoed through the air and made Eddie jolt. All he saw was a flash of purple and a wave of water splutter up and splash far enough to cascade across Evan's back.
She had fallen in.
She fell in the deep end.
"Tilly!"
"Fuck!" Eddie dug his fingers a little too harshly into Chris's waist, causing him to yelp as Eddie hoisted him up over his shoulders and held him out towards Evan.
Evan kept one hand on Lois while he grabbed Chris's arm with the other to make sure he could get himself settled and floating in the water. He couldn't move before Eddie was yelling "She's fell in!" as he pushed away and dove down into the water.
He hooked an arm around Chris's waist while he leaned back so Lois could slide off his shoulders and get into the water. She swam round his side and clung to his other arm and Evan moved both kids so they were in front of him. His arms stayed tight around them and he pushed forward, dragging them with him as he watched in panic.
He could just about see Eddie's black trunks beneath the water and his eyes locked onto (Y/n). She was knelt down on the edge, both hands gripping the side of the pool so tightly she was going to cut her palms. He could see the debate in her eyes but she didn't dive in.
Eddie had told her not to. He shook his head. He would get Tilly.
(Y/n) could feel Ava's hands on her shoulders and it made her realise that she was shaking.
She had been so close to Tilly, she was about to reach out for her when the toddler's foot slipped in a puddle and she toppled over. She wasn't a good swimmer. She loved being in the water and flapping about but she hadn't even started taking lessons yet. And as much as she didn't mind being splashed, she didn't like going underwater.
She could see all the other people in the nearby deckchairs had stood up and were all crowding round the edges of the pool. The few other people in the pool were getting closer and another man went under the surface to try and help. It only made (Y/n)'s stomach twist and made her sure she was going to throw up.
Everyone could of screamed when Eddie finally resurfaced again.
He coughed, spitting the little water he had inhaled while he blinked furiously to try and gather his senses and his surroundings. He took a deep breath and pushed onto his back, using his right arm to keep himself afloat while his left hand secured his youngest girl against his chest.
Tilly's head flopped back against his chest as she spewed water and grogged, trying to scream but she didn't quite have the air yet.
"I gotcha, baby girl. You're okay, daddy's got you."
Pushing forward, Eddie lifted Tilly higher up and swam to the side of the pool. He carefully handed her over to (Y/n) before he grabbed the edge and heaved himself up out of the water that suddenly felt dense and heavy like it was trying to drag him back under.
"Is she alright?" Evan hoisted Chris and Lois up out of the pool and clambered up too, following his partners as they quickly hurried over and sat down on a deck chair.
(Y/n) sat down with Ava and let Eddie lift Tilly back out of her arms. He sat down on the chair in front of her with Evan slumped down against him and Evan's chin perched on his shoulder. While Lois and Chris sat down with (Y/n) and Chris wrapped his arms around (Y/n)'s neck and leaned his cheek on her head.
"She's fine, she's breathing. Deep breaths, baby girl. That's it." Eddie kept his left hand on Tilly's chest and rubbed forceful circles along her back with his right hand. He patted her shoulders every few seconds until she coughed up all the water she had inhaled and she was finally back to screaming.
She flopped over Eddie's arm and coughed. Water dripped off them both and created a puddle on the chair and on the wooden floor beneath them, but it didn't matter.
"You should have waited for me." (Y/n) murmured softly, moving one hand to hold Chris's arm that was around her neck while she leaned over to kiss Tilly's head.
"You gave us a fright, baby." Evan rubbed his finger against Tilly's cheek while he kissed Eddie's neck, murmuring a soft "Well done," into his skin.
With a sigh, Eddie lifted Tilly up and turned her around so she was facing his chest. He slowly sank back against the chair, ignoring the uncomfortable feeling of his drenched skin sticking to the burning hot chair. He tilted his head back and stretched his legs out, feeling the sun beaming down on them while he tried to catch his breath back.
His chest panted and heaved, especially with Tilly now weighing down on him, but he didn't care. He wrapped both arms tightly around her and let her curl up into his chest. Her face tucked into his neck as she began to cry, cough and whimper while Eddie pressed his lips to the top of her head and quietly shushed her.
"Okay baby, you're okay. No more swimming this morning, I don't need a heart attack just yet." Eddie smiled when he felt Evan kissing his temple.
Evan ran a hand through his hair and shook off a bit more water before he opened his arms when Lois and Ava shuffled across onto his deck chair. He sat each of them on his lap and moved to recline in the same manner as Eddie, hugging the two girls to his chest. While (Y/n) stayed sat up on her chair, clinging to Chris who was pressing down on her back and kissing her cheek.
"This holiday's off to a great start."
A grin spread across Eddie's lips and he poked his tongue between his teeth, smothering his laugh when he felt both Evan and (Y/n) reach out to slap his thighs.
"Don't you jinx us, Eddie."

Buck & Eddie: The 13th episode of each season
Tumblr media
The 13th episode of each season has included very important moments regarding Buck and Eddie’s relationship.  Moments were included of them comforting each other, Eddie inviting Buck to go on a lunch date, Eddie encouraging someone else to tell the person they wanted to be with they love them, them almost losing each other forever and them being vulnerable in front of each other when they had never allowed anyone else to see that side of them before. The moments they’ve shared were always front and center and some of those moments happened between them while they were dating other people. Therefore, these pivotal moments within their relationship shouldn’t be ignored because it’s all part of their journey to becoming a CANON couple.
2x13 “Fight or Flight”
Tumblr media
Buck’s sister Maddie had been taken by her estranged husband Doug and he was visibly upset.  He was trying to fix it when he swiped Chimney’s iPhone from the crime scene so the police could quickly find her but he ended up being reprimanded by Athena.  This was one of the worst moments in his life and even though his found dad, Bobby was there to offer him support, there was only one person who could give him the support he needed and that was Eddie!
Reminder, Buck was in a relationship but his girlfriend was nowhere to be found.  Eddie was there to comfort and offer him the support he needed during one of the most stressful times in his life.  Also, Maddie raised Buck which means to him it probably felt like his mother had been taken instead of it just feeling like his sister was missing.
Here’s the thing, the show could have easily set it up where Buck’s girlfriend was there for him but they didn’t.  When Buck found Chimney lying on the ground, it appears he had just returned home from what may have been a date.  He was dressed in a nice army green button-down shirt and a pair of slacks so it’s possible he had just returned from being on a date with her but she wasn’t at the hospital.  Eddie was there for him and not long after he arrived, he found Buck so he could be there to support and comfort him.
Tumblr media
When Eddie introduced himself to Michael, the things they didn’t say to each other were LOUDER than the things they did.  Eddie said, “We haven’t met but I love you... Eddie” and he extended his hand. Michael shook his hand and replied, “Michael... pleasure.”  Their handshake was VERY LOUD and so were their non-verbal interactions 👀👀.
Tumblr media
Eddie’s estranged wife had recently returned after having been gone for almost two years and she brought Christopher to the hospital so Eddie could spend time with him.  Then Eddie told her she could leave if she had something else to do because she had already brought his son there to be with him and he even highlighted the fact that Christopher was the most important.  After she said she was good with being there with him, he skeptically looked at her and then he looked down like he really didn’t want her there. Reminder, this happened a few months after he told her he didn’t know if he could trust her.  Also his conversation with her at the hospital happened after he had already talked to Buck👀👀.
3x13 “Pinned”
Tumblr media
Eddie teased Buck when he used the wrong word to describe a specific skeletal body part and Buck responded, “You can’t just let me enjoy the win”.  Bobby spoke up and said, “Good job Buck.” to encourage him but Eddie looked over his shoulder at Buck.  Their banter was in full effect and this happened right after 3x12 “Fools” when they spent a Buckley-Diaz Family Day at the park so Christopher could ride the adaptable skateboard Buck and Eddie built for him.
Tumblr media
Eddie told Chimney, “I get taking things slow but tomorrow isn’t promised to anyone.  So, if you love her... tell her”.  His words to Chimney appear to have been foreshadowing for something he would have to remind himself of in the future since it seems like he will probably be the one to confess his love to Buck especially now that he almost lost him again in 6x10 “In a Flash”.  He was encouraging his friend to tell one of the Buckley siblings he loves her. Well Eddie’s in love with a Buckley sibling too and this happened after he and Buck had that sexually tense exchange during The Kitchen Scene while they made heart eyes at each other in 3x9 “Fallout” and right before he changed his will and named Buck to be Christopher’s legal guardian in 3x15 “Eddie Begins”.
Tumblr media
Eddie casually asked Buck out on a lunch date.  When they arrived at the hospital to help Hen and Chimney unload the dad who had shot a nail into his heart, Eddie said, “Wanna grab a bite after we drop ‘em?” and Buck agreed. Eddie was slick with the ask and Buck readily agreed which means it probably wasn’t the first time and it certainly wouldn’t be the last.
4x13 “Suspicion”
Tumblr media
Eddie was shot by a sniper while he stood only a few feet in front of Buck.  Up to that point, it was the most PIVOTAL moment within their relationship because they almost lost each other forever.  Their hearts were on full display especially after Eddie’s blood splattered all over Buck’s face and clothes and they spent several seconds staring at each other until Eddie hit the ground.
Tumblr media
Buck went into a catatonic state of shock after he watched the love of his life fall down and his mental state had been affected so much that he couldn’t move.  If it hadn’t been for Captain Jeshan Mehta tackling him to the ground, it’s possible he could have been shot too because the bullet hit the side of the firetruck where Buck was standing.  Reminder, Eddie was in a relationship but Buck is THE LOVE OF HIS LIFE, therefore the love they have for each other could no longer be ignored. Please note this happened exactly one year after Eddie changed his will.
Tumblr media
Eddie reached for Buck while he was on the ground lying in a pool of his own blood.  In that moment, the only person Eddie could see was Buck.
Tumblr media
Eddie met Buck’s eyes and Buck met his, then they had one of their silent conversations.
Tumblr media
Buck kept his eyes locked with Eddie’s until Eddie went unconscious and prior to Eddie closing his eyes, neither of them looked at anyone or anything else.  Buck didn’t take his eyes off of Eddie until after Eddie closed his eyes and then he came out of his catatonic state. After that Buck Army rolled underneath the firetruck so he could save him.
5x13 “Fear-O-Phobia”
Tumblr media
Buck’s breath hitched in his throat after he broke down Eddie’s bedroom door and his fear was palpable.  He didn’t know if he was going to find Eddie’s dead body, therefore when he called Eddie’s name, his voice was filled with a quiet panic and he could hardly breathe.  Eddie didn’t make any noise because he didn’t want their son to hear him and he didn’t make a sound until after he heard Buck calling for him.
Tumblr media
Buck rushed over to Eddie’s side after he heard him crying and Eddie allowed himself to be the most vulnerable he’d ever been in his life. Prior to that night, he had never allowed anyone to see him cry like that including his deceased wife or his ex-girlfriend but he allowed Buck to see every single piece of him including the broken ones.
Tumblr media
Reminder, Buck was in a relationship and she had just moved in with him a few days earlier but his number one priority was to be there for Eddie and their son.  He stayed with them for several days even after Eddie returned to therapy (related post linked here).
6x13 “Mixed Feelings”
Tumblr media
Based on the sneak peek video of Buck and Eddie participating in a low stakes’ poker game, it appears 6x13 could be another pivotal moment within their relationship especially since Eddie recited the exact amount of time down to the second of how long Buck was dead after he was struck by lightning.  It was three minutes and seventeen seconds which just so happens to be the same amount of time that elapsed after Eddie was shot by a sniper (timed post of The Shooting linked here).
Tumblr media
How did Eddie get Buck to agree to go to the poker game?  Did he ask him out on a date like he did in 3x13?  What else will happen between Buck and Eddie in 6x13 that will strengthen their relationship and take it to the next level? Will there be more pivotal moments of Buck and Eddie’s relationship included in 6x13 that will finally lead to them becoming a CANON couple?  There are only a few hours left until the episode airs but based on previous season’s 13th episodes, it’s very likely these questions will be answered.

Fic Author Self Rec
Tagged by the wonderful @letmetellyouaboutmyfeels ❤️😘
I think I'll start with...
Kink Club AU
Where Buck and Eddie first meet at a kink club before the firehouse! This one was wild because it was an idea I had randomly while driving around. Then I let it sit for like a month or so before I tackled it. It's such an important fic for me too because I think it really taught me the value of my own boundaries? So not only is it emotional and spicy but it taught me something.
Buckley Bookshop AU
Ok but I LOVE this AU so much. I was a little nervous because it was Madney and I don't write their meet cute often just because I love them but I think it came out really well. It felt great getting to explore the dynamic of Doug and Maddie with Buck being such a prevalent variable to their relationship and it's maybe some of my best whump. Also Buckley Siblings. You all know this and getting to write an AU where Maddie is Buck's primary guardian was just 🤌🏻 BUT BUT BUT ALSO...... I LOVED LOVED LOVED getting to write teenage Eddie, Buck, and Taylor. I have a whole head full of HCs for that trouble trio.
Falling Slowly; Sing Your Melody (I’ll Sing It Loud)
Tortured Musician Buck my beloved. I'm sure I've probably bored everyone with how much I loved writing this fic but I LOVED WRITING THIS FIC. It would keep me up at night and literally wake me up from a dead sleep so I could keep writing. I cried when I finished writing it. I loved getting write Buck's vulnerability and creativity. Also the music. I will convert all of you into liking my music.
00Q!Buddie AU
I wrote that first one not thinking I'd go on to write a whole ass prequel and a possible planned sequel but here we are! I'm going to say: I crushed the smutty parts of this AU. It's maybe some of my best. I loved getting to explore smart Buck and the broody, darker side of Eddie while also showing just how much capacity he has to love some one.
I Don't Mind Waiting (If It's For You)
Trashy romance murder mystery novel AU my beloved. I wrote this while being stuck inside for four days during a blizzard in February and I was having such a fun time. The whole thing consumed by brain. I don't even really remember how I got the idea for it but I'm so glad I did.
I'm going to tag @homerforsure @bigfootsmom @mellaithwen @rogerzsteven @like-the-rest-of-la (fic and art count cus I say so) and @lovebuck

7x06 is officially one of my favorite episodes ever and it's not just because it made me cry, but it's also because this episode represents everything Madney has had to fight through in order for this moment to be possible.
From the very start of the show, Chimney has always been someone who fights for everyone except himself. Most notably in season 5, he did everything he could to make sure Maddie was safe, and he would have let her go in the end if that was what she wanted. Part of what makes Madney The Ship of All Time is that they always fight to get back to each other, and I absolutely loved the fact that Maddie was the one to ultimately propose, because Chimney needed that. It was also important for Maddie, choosing to do something that didn't end well the first time because she knows she finally found the person she's meant to be with.
In this episode, we see Chimney desperate to get back to Maddie even if he can't even remember her name, and we see him reliving everything traumatic that has happened to him. Bringing Doug back for this was genuis because he represents that trauma, as well as something that is standing between him and Maddie. Whether it be Doug himself, or depression, or in this case, amnesia, Maddie and Chimney not only have had to learn to fight for each other, but they had to learn to fight for themselves. Enter Kevin, and we see Chimney letting go of his guilt and fighting for himself, fighting to get home. Because Chimney is worthy of love and he knows without a doubt that Maddie loves him, despite everything hallucination Doug tried to tell him.
Of course, there is absolutely nothing wrong with a sweet wedding episode where nothing goes wrong, but I think that this episode was perfect for Madney. After everything they've gone through both individually and as a couple, this was a great way to bring it all back and say "Hey, they survived all of this, not only because they love each other but also beacuse they've learned to love themselves." and I think that is beautiful.
I've seen some people say they feel Madney didn't have enough screentime and that's completely fair, but to me personally it's not about screentime, it's about the story they're trying to tell. I think they've told a damn good one!
