Documenting one of my projects here!
Im taking an anthropology class called Magic, Witchcraft, and Religion, and our final proj is to present any topic relating to the class in any medium. My topic is Victorian/Edwardian mourning rituals and customs. I chose to recreate an Edwardian (c. 1905-ish) half mourning dress!!
So far, ive went through several rounds of designing and 0 mockups bc i dont have time for that. Im recreating everything using only methods that would have been available at the time. I currently own 2 antique sewing machines from 1911: one hand crank and one treadle. A lot of this project will likely be done by hand because i just enjoy it :)
I'm using a cotton lawn, which, according to Victorian mourning guides, would not have likely been used because the dyed might bleed onto the skin, but I live in a very hot area and will *absolutely not* be wearing wool or silk in 95F weather. The sash is (regrettably) poly taffeta because i dont have the money for silk. Im using snaps and a few vintage buttons for the closures.
Above are pics of some sketches, a blouse fitting, and the belt/sash ive draped. Ive seen similar sashes on lingerie/summer dresses and thought it might be fitting. Taffetta probably wouldve been used towards the end of half mourning according to etiquette books, but ive found extant examples that suggest otherwise. I also found that etiquette rules were a bit more relaxed in Edwardian times compared to Victorian.
I have the skirt and blouse placketts cut out and i need to attatch them. I might add some lace to the cuffs but idk yet. I kinda like the simple short cuffs but a lot of 1905-6 dresses ive seen have large ruffles at the sleeve. I dont really want to make ruffles but they do look cool. I also have a chemise, bustle pad, corset, and petticoat done but i felt weird posting a picture in (Edwardian) underwear, even if it covers much more than our modern underwear.
I will be updating this page and plan to present this project in video format on youtube, ill post a link here once I finish!

Hello lovelies, I have been working on this post for a little over a month now trying to find any and all information I can on the topic of accessorizing with gloves.
What was once as common as a handbag, has now become arguably non-existent in the last thirty years. I, for one, find that what really draws a vintage ensemble together , or pushes it over the top is the accessorizing of coordinating gloves. The question then arises, how does one wear them - or better yet, how did a lady once wear them? What were the stylistic rules and expectations when a lady stepped out in public?
Compared to other vintage stylistic rules, learning about glove etiquette of the 1920’s - the 1960’s (even a little into the 1980’s) is spotty at best with blurry images of guides posted online or quick brief “wear this not that”, in the styling books in my collection. However, I think with the below information I provide down below, I think we can safely accessorize our ensembles without being a fashion miss-step of our desired era.
Types of Gloves:
Shorties - can be worn with taffeta evening dresses, short dinner dresses, a suit, two-piece woolens, prints & cottons. Typically in neutral colors or in a coordinating color as this style is normally for street, daytime & informal occasions.
Leather - can be worn with tweed, flannel suits, wooly dresses, bulky coats, fur coats, riding or driving. Think cooler weather, or fall styling. These would typically be in neutral black or browns to coordinate with the typical coloring of cooler weather ensembles.
Doeskin’s - best worn for dress-up dates or tea. Typically worn with black crepe, a dress maker’s suit, fur coats/jackets, pretty prints.
Silky Gloves - best worn with summer sheers, slinky dresses, Southern-Belle style organdy, dressy afternoon frocks, bridesmaid’s dresses.
Cotton - This is the most common as aside from formal occasion can be worn with almost all styling & colors. Examples: summery cottons or liens, spring suits/prints or coats, fall coats & suiting, rainy day attire. (Most common to find that are true vintage these days)
Long Length - can be worn with short-sleeved afternoon dresses, dress maker’s suits, slinky evening dresses, & summer liens. These are usually the length reserved for formal or special occasions.

I hope this helps you accessorize your vintage wardrobe with confidence! Vintage gloves was one of the first pieces of vintage clothing I started collecting as they are typically found in a large amount and for a very reasonable price. I also find they can take an ensemble made up of more modern, vintage-styled pieces & really add that POP to make it feel more authentic!

I collect vintage, antique, and antiquarian books. But I don’t mean that I’ve spent hundreds to obtain a pristine collection of near-mint condition author signed first editions that’ve been protected carefully instead of read and re read.
I mean 50% of my collection comes from me going to I thrift shops and finding the few the old books they have. Sometimes I get them just because they’re pretty. More often, it’s because I love the history from old books that I’ll only ever get glimpses of; little notes in the margins, bookmarks that are newspaper clippings from the thirties, the one where a kid drew all over the pages of his parents’ poetry book from 1910. I bought one because I opened it and on the inside of the cover someone had written “terrible book and even worse ending. Don’t bother!” I’ve got one that had book club bills to the previous owner dated from the ‘60s tucked between the pages. I have a “Guide to Etiquette for the Proper Young Lady” from the ‘50s with a note from the recipient’s parents written inside the cover saying they hope she will learn from this book and that they’ve got the church praying for her; that book is in pristine condition and clearly never read and I love that for her, whoever she was living her rebel life.
The other 40% are things my local thrift store can’t really sell, like “A Guide to Modern Women’s Medicine” from 1961 or other super outdated reference books that they’ll call me to see if I want because while making small talk about my weird book purchases with the cashier i mentioned I’m a writer doing a historically accurate time travel series and that stuff is actually WAY better of a resource for some things than digging through Google. I get a call every few months to see if I want any of it and I’m so appreciative of them.
I do have a few valuable things, like the first edition of a Nancy Drew book from the ‘30s I found at Habitat for Humanity for $1. I also have the full set of all 54 first edition Great Works of Western Literature from Encyclopedia Brittanica, which I got for free from someone who’s had it in his family for three generations but can’t take it when he moves, and wanted to give it to someone who’d appreciate it. They’ve all clearly been read many times. And I’m so stoked to start reading some of the authors that’ve been on my list for ages.
I love my little hodgepodge collection of old books that’ve seen more time than I have and hold little pieces of whoever read them before me. I want all the weird, imperfect antique books I can get. ♥️

ON ANONYMOUS INTERNET CRITICISM
This is a vent post, a sort of internet etiquette thing, so apologies ahead of time. Our podcast hosting service automatically added a Q&A to our most recent episode, and here's the only comment. In my opinion, it's bad form to say stuff like this to creators, especially when you're getting their stuff for free.
First, to respond to the comment: yes, our criticisms of similar games will be similar, especially since this is an unplanned, conversational medium. I'm not gonna stop the podcast to say, "These opinions are similar to ones we expressed in another episode, so let's not say them." We’re not doing planned, intricate essays; we’re having an ongoing, iterative engagement with a larger medium.
And I mostly agree that our episodes on trad games are less pleasant! But some (Warhammer, Gamma World) have been really fun. And since we schedule pretty far ahead, it would wreck our process to say, "This one isn't as fun, let's skip it."
Also, since this is a collaborative podcast, Max and I and our guests make compromises. Episodes on books I haven't liked have been really popular, books I like get criticized in ways I don't agree with, etc. And that's part of the journey! That's a good thing. If I just wanted to do my own thing, I’d do my own thing. But I love what emerges from talking with people I respect.
But I want to get away from the specifics and talk about this general approach to “engaging with content.” I got the email alert about this Q&A this morning while I was making coffee. “Hm, didn’t realize this was enabled,” I thought. And as I sat down to do my morning correspondences, I read this. And it was a bummer. It won’t change how we approach the show (due to the aforementioned reasons), and it also made my day a little worse.
And we don’t want to drag down your day. For real. Our time on earth is limited, so don’t listen to a podcast that isn’t doing it for you. If you don’t like an episode, turn it off. Go listen to System Matters, Appendix N Book Club, The Vintage RPG Podcast, and so on. We’ll be back with another episode later, and maybe it’ll be more your style.
But if you really want us to change what we do, here are my suggestions—lead with the carrot. Compliment the episodes you did like. Tell us why you liked them. Recommend a book you want us to cover. Throw us some money if you really want us to pay attention.
But in the end, telling us to change our podcast is like telling a roommate to cook different food.
We’re not getting paid for this.
We’re mostly doing this for ourselves, but you get free leftovers.
We’re learning as we go.
Sometimes we want to consume garbage.
And, uh, it all ends up in the toilet anyway.

Why are etiquette books no longer a big thing some of us could use a guide to any and all social situations it's not like social etiquette doesn't exist anymore so why are there so few books on it?
Also if anyone has any good vintage etiquette books that they can recommend to me (preferably those in the public domain as I do not have much money currently and would like to be able to access these for free online) I would be eternally grateful

The Fandom I'd like a match-up for is Tokyo Revengers. My pronouns are She/Her and my gender preference is male and I'd like it to be romantic please <3.
Some positive traits: I'm overall very friendly and easy to approach. I'm very patient and slow to anger. I'm very empathetic and sympathetic, I have a very easy time putting myself in others' shoes and rarely judge others. I'm a good listener and very attentive to others' needs. I tend to remember little things about the people I love and if I'm passionate about something I will always put my 110% in. I'm a very not judgemental person and I think it's fair to say I'm quite mature as well. I can be spontaneous and go along with spontaneous ideas very well but I'm not impulsive. I'm also overall polite and will be very talkative with the right people.
Some negative traits: I have a bad habit of being a people pleaser and have an overall hard time saying no unless I'm asked something blatantly dangerous. I'm a big daydreamer so I often have my head in the clouds which can make me less attentive to my surroundings and may lead the to zone out every now and then. I'm a procrastinator and when I don't really like something I'll leave it until the very last moment to do. And lastly I tend to beat around the bush when I have to say something negative to someone or about someone to them or at least take a while to at least get to it because I try to sugarcoat it as much as possible. So... Basically not very straightforward.

I like animals. I like to go on unnecessarily long walks. Mind of embarrassing but sometimes when I'm nervous to go somewhere for whatever reason I have this little plushie I take with me in my bag. I collect pink snack packages?? It might've not been delicious but at least the packaging is cute 😪. I like pink in general. An unsung love language of mine is just feeding people? It ties in with my hobby for sure but with me you'll never go hungry. I like dressing up and doing my makeup. My favorite season is winter and I love love ice skating. I'm very affectionate both verbally and physically and will tone it down depending on what the person I'm with is comfortable with. Sometimes when I laugh too hard I snort a little :/, I can dance a Viennese waltz My favorite Disney princesses are Cinderella and Aurora and both are actually quite similar to me. One night when I was younger I decided to teach myself 1800s etiquette and now old ladies love me. When I'm excited about something I bounce on my toes a little, I'm adept at flower language and every summer I get up early to pick some pretty ones and press them, only one of each though. I can sing a little but don't expect a power ballad out of me :(. I knit my neighbours cat a little hat. I like exploring local markets for trinkets. I cry pretty easily. I think that's everything I can think of at the moment.
