Something I find really interesting about XCOM:EU/EW is Dr. Shen's and Vahlen's rivalry. They explicitly disagree on almost every front, and surface level it shows to be a generic Engineer vs. Scientist rivalry, given that's what they are. But in reality, it evolves into Shen being more reserved and Vahlen being all gung-ho. Shen is even hesitant about things that HE comes up with, like the MEC units, because of the Floaters. When the first soldier with The Gift is discovered, he's the only chatterer that talks about the moral obligations to "prepare them for what they're about to experience." The ONLY time where Vahlen shows restraint is upon the discovery of Elite EXALT, where she states that "It seems EXALT has been working quickly to incorporate alien genetic material into their own soldiers. However, I would never suggest we take such an... unrestrained approach."

Endings are hard! While Empire in Ruins (2022) is vastly and obviously superior to Empire in Flames (it is far more open, dynamic and thematically tied to the previous arcs of the campaign story). Yet it still leaves me a bit wanting, especially after how deliciously over-the-top Horned Rat was.

I think this is partially because the thrust of the adventure is fairly linear and a lot of it involves high-level summits with powerful political figures. These are handled well, and just about every scene in the chain has a lot of room for players to shine, but more than any other volume of the series, it depends almost entirely on the players. Similarly, the plot seems rather nebulous compared to the previous chapters. I think that is intentional — the player and their actions (and consequences) getting here are going to vary a LOT from table to table, so there needs to be room to account for all that variety. This final chapter is a vessel that feels empty in the reading because the play is going to fill it up. I can see that! But it is a bit of an underwhelming read. There are some organizational issues too (one key map is in the Companion, for starters, as is a lot of thought on non-canon endings that seems super important), and I generally feel like it lacks the support scaffolding the other volumes have (not much accounting for the various possible if/thens, likely because there are just too many of them). The Companion adds a lot of interesting context but the extra scenarios again feel either too much or too samey to effectively expand the campaign.

It is still a massive improvement over the original and, ultimately, a cohesive capper for one of the biggest and best campaigns out there.

This trench coat was John's favorite, although he had never dreamed before he could endure the uncomfortable touch wrapping around his neck. It really opened his narrow outlook on the variety of life. This was just perfect; well fit on his shoulder, its ivory wool collar felt soft, and its length, too, was his size. In all aspects, this coat was positive proof that Bruce was caring about him right now. Whenever he buried his nose in the coat and breathed in, he could always discover a trace of its owner's scent. It evoked a piece of imagination that he was choosing today's lunch in the cafeteria, together, locked in Bruce's firm arms even when he was listening to a tedious major class alone.

John raise his head to check the professor wasn't paying attention to his seat. He cautiously took out his cell phone and texted Bruce. It was read almost immedately before John's patience ran out. Few more seconds for typing the answer-- and-- finally--

He received Bruce's promise that he would be out in front of the building where John is in right now and waiting for him, considering seriously skipping next classes to go out on a surprise date. No, the latter one was a pure result of John's imagination, and he himself was aware of it, but at least he could try. It was so lovely outside. Spending whole day inside dreary forest of college buildings in this weather had to be regarded as a grave crime. Maybe he could beg him for skipping class... going to a park nearby... feeding geese... taking some pictures together...... if everything went well, he could get a chance to invite Bruce to his studio for dinner at the end of today's date as if there were no imminent assignment.

John's eyes started to be twinkling with anticipation. About half an hour was left until the professor finished this class, but it was all right. After this lecture, he and his Bruce would have great fun together all day long.

i wanted to apologise. i know its been a while but i accidentally started enemy within not realising it was that story that everyone hated. not only did i finish cuz really liked it but im realising that it didnt have any of the stuff we accused you of. i never sent you any hate but i thought you deserved it and now i feel bad. i guess im sorry i jumped on a bandwagon? im embarrassed

Hey. Wow. I didn’t see this ever coming, to be honest? Thank you?? This actually means a lot. You don’t know how much I appreciate it. (And I don’t want you to be embarrassed — I know you’re telling the truth, bc if you had sent me hate, you’d be one of the dozens I’ve had to block 😅)

All of that was really fucked up, so thank you for acknowledging my story didn’t have or promote those fucked up themes. I knew it, I knew my story could speak to that (which is why I left it up!!) but I swear I started going a little crazy there for a moment with all the chatter and cyber-bullying. I’m glad it’s become clear to you that the fight was never actually about that (and that you even liked the story!!!) 💜

Looking back at the whole mess now is so surreal. In the beginning, I truly thought it was some big misunderstanding that I, or ppl who had actually read my story, could clear up real quick. But it just got messier and messier.

Alas. It was very big of you to come back and tell me this (did I say thank you enough? 😉) and I applaud you for not sending any of the hate yourself. Honestly, I don’t even blame you for assuming the worst, bc like you said, you hadn’t even read it, so how could you know the truth? But I do hope that going forth you stand up to any person who sends hate over fanfiction — even when you don’t like the story, or characters, content, ship, WHATEVER. As long as the story is correctly labeled and has proper warnings, let that shit go. This is fandom! We’re all adults who are allowed to consume and create whatever content we want! It’s supposed to be fun!

Something I drew a long time ago. Made it the opening page for Doctor Who Divergence which never went very far, visually speaking. I have a great deal of it written down somewhere; it's a series based off the Big Finish audio adventure "Zagreus" and is a story featuring all the Doctors having to find and rescue each other throughout the Divergent Universe while also having to heal the TARDIS along the way.

I love the first three volumes (or four, depending on what editions you’re looking at) of the original Enemy Within campaign for Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. The last two chapters, not so much — Kislev is fine, but a digression; Empire in Flames is a linear, ex machina mess. I’m lukewarm on the system for 4e WFRP from Cubicle 7 (too many meta currencies!) but I was extremely intrigued by their announcement that they were renovating Enemy Within for the modern era. 4E is its own thing in many ways, but I think it manages to bridge a gap to the sensibilities of 1E in regards to the presentation of the Old World. We’re never getting the early 1E-era back, but this is a good modern equivalent. If they can pull it off. Can they pull it off? What we have here is the collector’s edition of the first set of two books — the core campaign chapter and a companion expansion — of a gigantic ten-volume series. Holy wow. I am already impressed.

Enemy in Shadows (2020). The core book contains the set-up adventure “Mistaken Identity” and the entirety of Shadows Over Bogenhafen. The companion has the equivalent of the sourcebook material from the original Enemy Within, lots of road encounters and NPCs, a short adventure and another weird carnival (there is already one in Shadows). Nearly everything is useful. In sum, it feels like the original, just polished up to a modern standard, similar to Chaosium’s recent treatment of Masks of Nyarlathotep. Which boils down to this being a brilliant adventure made more so. We’re off to a good start here!
