Edward Jenner, the British physician who popularized vaccinations when he discovered the smallpox vaccine, was born on this day in 1749. At one time smallpox killed entire populations of people around the world, meaning Jenner's vaccine has literally saved millions and millions of lives since its creation, though religious leaders, some doctors, and members of the wealthy class opposed his efforts. Anti-vaxxers are as old as vaccinations themselves. Science has yet to find a cure for them.

«While the vaccine discovery was progressive, the joy I felt at the prospect before me of being the instrument destined to take away from the world one of its greatest calamities [smallpox], blended with the fond hope of enjoying independence and domestic peace and happiness, was often so excessive that, in pursuing my favourite subject among the meadows, I have sometimes found myself in a kind of reverie». #EdwardJenner #Berkeley #Gloucestershire #England #Physician #Perseverance #Freedom #Inspirational #Success #Life #Wisdom #Leadership #Courageous #Selfrealization #SelfDevelopment #Resilience #Greatness #SelfDiscovery #Challenge #Assertiveness #IgersUK #MoveForward #AjToussaint #GreatBritish🧙‍♂️🇬🇧 https://www.instagram.com/p/B_0mg8gHFPhmnnqKlp-AUcKVmoN3t1eQPyXAKc0/?igshid=1h7bevdiz8ys7

#Repost @drlindseyfitzharris (@get_repost) ・・・ Today it's the 270th birthday of #EdwardJenner, pioneer of vaccination who has arguably saved more lives than anyone else in history. Here’s a post in his honour. (Photo of two children - one vaccinated against smallpox, the other not - from @DrJennersHouse.). . Smallpox is one of the deadliest & most contagious diseases known to man. The virus killed over half a billion people in the twentieth century alone—three times the number of deaths from all of the century’s wars combined. On 8 May 1980, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced the eradication of smallpox. This was an unprecedented event in history, signaling the first and only annihilation of a human disease. The victory—which saved tens of millions of lives—fulfilled the lifelong dream Edward Jenner, who first tested his vaccine on 14 May 1796. . Jenner noticed that dairymaids who contracted cowpox never developed smallpox. Working from this, he developed a vaccine from cowpox. Indeed, the word “vaccination,” coined by Jenner in 1796, is derived from the Latin root vaccinus, meaning "of or from the cow.” The prominent Scottish physician Sir Walter Farquhar advised Jenner that if he kept the nature of the vaccine a secret, it could yield him a nest egg of as much as £100,000. But Jenner nurtured no such ambitions. . In 1798, he had a hut built in his garden & christened it the TEMPLE OF VACCINIA. It not only became a beacon of hope for the poor who sought protection against smallpox, but it was also the site of the first public health service in Britain. Though he never left his own country, Jenner became celebrated as a savior the world over. In a letter to Jenner, Thomas Jefferson wrote: “mankind can never forget that you have lived.” . The concept of vaccination dates back much further than most people realize. You can visit @DrJennersHouse and the Temple of Vaccinia today (SWIPE).

21st January 1677, publication of the first medical pamphlet in North America, published in Boston: ’A brief rule to guide the common people of New-England how to order themselves and theirs in the small pocks, or measels.’ written by Thomas Thacher, appeared on this day during the smallpox epidemic of that year. Boston in 1677 had only been established for 37 years; however smallpox had already become established in Native American populations, who had had no previous contact with the disease, it would kill an estimated 90 percent of North America’s Native peoples, before the end of the 17th century. Even in populations where it was established, smallpox would continue to kill an estimated 400,000 people a year in 18th Century Europe alone. Again in Boston in 1721, the Reverend Cotton Mather, best known for his involvement in the Salem witch trials, would provoke controversy by pushing for a treatment told to him by his African slave Onesimus, who had been inoculated in Africa as a boy. On June 6, 1721, Mather sent reports on inoculation to local physicians, most viewing inoculation as violating the natural laws of medicine. However Boston doctor, and great uncle of future President John Adams, Dr. Zabdiel Boylston, did successfully try the procedure on his youngest son and two slaves. In 1798 a smallpox vaccination was successfully demonstrated and proved to be effective by Dr. Edward Jenner, leading to smallpox’s global eradication in 1980.
