In the medieval period those suffering from wounds inflicted in battle, or a variety of other ailments could be treated with ‘Unguentum armariun’ a magnetic treatment from bandages or medicines that had been infused with a liniment using usnea. Usnea was the highly prized moss that was collected from the skulls of the dead, preferably the skulls of individuals who had died in battle or had met violent ends. This moss was considered medicinally potent due to the belief that it contained the remaining spirit, especially if that spirit had been trapped by a violent death which in turn had been absorbed by the moss or lichen growing on the skull. This spirit could then be absorbed to empower the sick person’s spirit and heal them. Alternatively if the wounds in battle did not kill the victim, they could be saved by a reverse of the above by using the healing power of a ‘weapon salve’, the healing of a wound by treating the weapon that made it with the patient's blood, and human fat. The apotropaic healing power of a ‘Weapon Salve’ was championed by English Paracelsian physician, astrologer, mathematician, and cosmologist Robert Fludd, Fludd’s occult cabalist philosophy, and hermetic approaches to knowledge, set him in opposition to the German mathematician, astronomer, and astrologer Johannes Kepler, who criticised Fludd's theory of cosmic harmony. Cannibalistic medicine and the ingestion of corpses was an accepted medical practice from the medieval period right up to the 19th century. Peaking during the 16th and 17th century medicines containing human fat, brains, and blood were popular and widely used. This is my first attempt at a double gourd. He’s more squat than I envisioned but has nice even walls and a sound weight to him. I am keeping all my first attempts at new shapes. They tend to be made with the last ball of clay as a reward at the end of a session, OR, have been made in a series of attempts. I’m very soft with myself when I try a new shape. I have a specific goal and a set of criterion, but I allow myself to play about a bit and I don’t destroy my attempts (straight away) but instead line them up in a progression.

One of the perks of these more experimental pieces is the freedom with which I approach their glazing. Very often I get my best glazing results with these more reckless pieces. On this guy the design of the wax resist is semi-obscured, but it lends interest to the piece. I like to leave fingerprints and drips from the second dipping and here I encouraged a bit of bubbling. It’s a miracle that the surface is unbroken, but it is. Sound and functional.
