esp (!) if that devotion devolves into one of the characters becoming unhinged for the person they're devoted to, OR one person losing their grip on reality + becoming unhinged, and the other person acting as their tether, or at least trying their damndest to, even if they lose themself a bit in the process.

The relationship between Sam and Sméagol is underrated. They greatly dislike each other of course and would rather be rid of the other (sometimes even in a most final way) but in between that they do acclimatise to each other a little bit in some funny ways. For example, that part of the book when Sam talks to Frodo in Gollum-speak, saying 'O precious' and whatnot. Endearing. Linguistic specialities are always to my delight in any Tolkien writing no matter how small.

I love how Sam makes Sméagol fetch him things (water, coneys, herbs) as if Gollum were a dog, and Sméagol being good and poor and pitiable and loyal and all that he claims to be, does bring 2/3rds of these to Sam, and only refuses to bring the herbs because Sam was rude! And that's true, Sam was (I'll say) unduly rude to poor Sméagol (maybe I'm buying into Gollum's propaganda but I don't care. he's a poor meowmeow!) Anyway Sam comes to this conclusion too after a while and tries to make peace by repeatedly offering a portion of their stew to Sméagol (who refuses, because he's offended). Of course after that the barely existing trust is further ravaged when Frodo "betrays" Sméagol in Henneth Annûn, but I wonder what it would have been like if they had more time together, more time for Sméagol to be a normal hobbit, more time for Sam to understand Sméagol's plight.

Gollum pretending to be a normal person is great and hilarious because he's a hobbit too and they're all so similar but Sam would be the last to admit that. Sméagol channelling that 500-years-buried jolly hobbit attitude is 👌👌 'Wake up sleepies!' 😂 Can you imagine socialising with people with utmost confidence even though in the past 500 years the only beings you spoke to were yourself and a ring (not counting the agents of the enemy who tortured you). No problem, good Sméagol will get on wonderfully with nice hobbits, tell riddles, joke about, have profound moments with them like any hobbit of the shire would. 10/10

#not to mention that i LONG to see a dynamic between the 3 of them #where frodo and sam show a bit of reverence towards smeagol on account that he's quite literally the oldest living hobbit #an elder hobbit walking out of the pages of history #love how his stories about his old hobbit life match up with what theoden says about the holbytla peoples #ahhhh these books are so good #lotr #the two towers #sam gamgee #sméagol #gollum #hobbits #lord of the rings #lotr reread

On the one hand I know we are all sick of love triangles and yes, I get it, I get it, but on the other hand the dynamic of a character struggling to choose between "i know you and you know me through years of history side by side" vs "i know you and you know me because we are the only two who can truly understand one another" continues to make me feral. We are hand-in-hand vs we go hand-in-hand. We are grown in the same garden vs we are forged in the same fire. Absolutely incredible stuff

someday i'll write my paper on the complicated tropes of power and love and homosociality that are inherent to Sam and Frodo's relationship but for now i'm stuck sitting here saying i kinda like Samfro but also there's a power balance there that makes it hard for me to ship wholeheartedly

#tolkien 100% experienced queerness in the trenches but there's also the fact that #officers and their batmen existed in a very rigidly defined space of social class and power #and that's the model for sam and frodo's relationship #so it's hard to extricate the employee/boss relationship from their characters #esp in the book where frodo is by far the older #i have a more general like for the ship nearer to the end of LOTR after they're on more equal footing #and definitely in the movies #but the power dynamics are also inherent to the subliminal queerness of their friendship #because they are brought together by sam working as frodo's batman #lotr
