the way that saika children in the novels have what are basically extremely bloodshot eyes while wielders like anri have glowing eyes is so good and i wish it had made it into the anime. i think it's much more terrifying as a concept because you're not really going to pay much attention if someone has bloodshot eyes, like in volume 3 of SH where yahiro notices mikado's eyes are red and he's just like "wow, i guess he's really tired." it's a completely normal thing and that makes it a lot creepier than every person under saika's control having glaringly obvious red pupils.
also i love this description of anri from volume 2:
"I cannot love others," Anri muttered to herself. Her eyes literally shone with a demonic light. "So I decided to rely on Saika, who loves people for me..." The light in her eyes was eerie, gentle, and warm, as if red fireflies had taken home within them. The light caught the lenses of her glasses, causing them to shine like giant red insect eyes.
anri having glowing eyes immediately differentiates her from haruna and it also allows for what i think is a really nice description. she has just pulled a katana out of her arm and her eyes are glowing bright red, but they're still described as gentle and warm

any thots on shinra and izaya? :3
IM SO SORRY I FORGOT TO ANSWER THIS GJKGD
I wanted to type up this like, long heartfelt post because these two make me insane in the membrane. I love them platonic and romantic both because either way at the core of their relationship there is a tragedy of two people who could've been inseparable, and then separated.
And I think it's a TRAVESTY that they didn't animate the breakdown Izaya had at the thought of Shinra dropping him. It makes the scene where Shinra waxes poetic about Izaya being fragile in the last arc make sense the way it just doesn't in the anime.
I dont think anything speaks on my thoughts better than my Actual thoughts during my last Durarara phase so! Have the raw screenshots :] ft. Friends

I can't remember the specifics of when Izaya started getting access to the underground but I'm guessing it was pretty young for normal standards...actually given the common trend of gang warfare maybe not. But I feel like he got a little more deep into it than any of the colour gang leaders did. Like didn't he get recruited by Kine?
Anyway, given that and his apparent brilliantness its no wonder so little was done about his delinquency. Even his fights with Shizuo. Like imagine being a teacher for him, and trying to inforce the rules, only to have the knowledge that some yakuza guy has got this kids back for whatever reason. "Oil barrels? I don't see no oil barrels?"
On one hand, no wonder he comes off as a little bratty, but can you blame him? You try being a teenage guardian to two younger sisters. I can see why he might have signed up for an easy route too. I know his parents might have sent him money, but how much of that would really help him? He's a student, if something else came along that allowed him to afford a babysitter I wouldn't blame him for taking the deal.
And imagine growing up where some of the only adults in your life were criminals.
There are so many things that tie into how fucked up he is.

i've already written about these quotes in my own drrr novel notes but i have to post about it here too just because i need to speak about it again but
Tumblr media
narita describing izaya as 'very difficult to grasp or classify' here in his first real appearance and introduction is so UGHHHHH it's so fucking good. izaya is like an enigma and he is so complex and he's got all these things going on with him that all work to make him so so so beautiful and so i just really like that narita worded it like that. i love to observe izaya like he's a specimen under the microscope.
the other things i highlighted were also very important to me i think the 'anything that wasn't himself' is also a good glimpse into izaya's personality and the way his mind works. 'equally pleasant face' i just like that one cause i like when they call him beautiful in the story . <3
Tumblr media
this also made me feel like i was going to ascend from my couch first time i reread it a while back. how interesting is it that narita describes mikado's feeling as though his 'entire existence would be denied' by the very man who so obviously struggles with facing his own humanity and instead chooses to see himself as an omnipotent figure. i just idk i'm not even going to try and get further into it bc i'm already like just feeling like i need to start rolling around and pulling my hair out but my god i love izaya orihara so much he truly is the goat he is MY goat 🙏🙏🙏

Naritaverse Thoughts
My favorite characters from Baccano!, Durarara!!, and Dead Mount Death Play would have fun having a philosophical discussion. I need to see Graham, Izaya, and Solitaire chatting. Izaya would lead the conversation, pointing out Graham's contradictions with interest.
Also, 2/3 of these characters have a spin-off novel. Where's my Graham Specter spin-off? (Volume 16 doesn't count.)

kasuka headcanons
- love language is gift giving and he’s the absolute best at it.
- has a collection of a very niche topic (cats probably? idk I just see him gathering little cat-related trinkets. or a cat character, like garfield)
- immaculate taste when it comes to literature and cinema. absolute no knowledge on music tho. this boy probably only listens to white noise (and his girlfriend’s music.)
- brings dokusonmaru everywhere with him. can’t leave him alone at home, no one knows what that cat could be planning.
- he’d have more cats if he could, but sadly his schedule doesn’t allow him of. also dokusonmaru is friendly but he has severe only child syndrome (spoiled)
- it takes him at least five business days to process an emotion. sometimes more if there’s high demand.
- he started modeling while he was still in high school, but surprisingly no one gave him shit for that because “that’s shizuo’s little brother and you really shouldn’t mess with him.”
- has absolute no sense of fear.
(*kasuka when his brother tries to throw a whole fridge at him, some yakuza threaten him to cut his pinky off, a guy points at him with a knife, or a serial killer lands in front of his car* “another tuesday…”)
- remembers the paparazzis faces and refers to them with their names, which freaks them out all the time.
- he’s great and unbeatable at card games. (demian do you mean poker-type of card games or yugi-oh-type of card games? yknow what. both.)
- great but odd sense of fashion. could be wearing a vintage trench coat from the thrift store that was previously owned by an old, dead person. along with an overpriced yves saint laurent belt. a dollar-store plain shirt. a pair of pants that were a hand-me-down from shizuo from ages ago. and some expensive designer sunglasses.
- he believes in the lost art of love letters, but at very mundane occasions. he leaves notes to ruri around the house if he’s not going to be there. but not normal notes nonono. they’re 1900’s-esque purple prose with the most devastatingly romantic lines.
- oh, but he’s also the world’s most driest texter. he absolutely sucks at it and cannot reply in any ways that’s not monosyllables only.
- has very weird social media presence. mostly pr team has to take care of his accounts. his fans do enjoy more when it’s him posting, since no one knows what the hell do his posts even mean.
(kasuka posts a funny picture of a cat looking oddly into the camara, his manager tells him “delete that, yuuhei. it’s unprofessional.” the picture already has hundreds of thousands of retweets. it’s too late)
- sometimes he tries to come up with something funny during interviews so lighten up the air, as a lot of celebrities do. but due to his flat affect, no one can tell if he’s dead serious or just joking.
- he’s very much a loner. he doesn’t have any friends in the industry because of how unapproachable he seems like, neither did he have friends at school. but he doesn’t really mind. he comprehends that’s he’s hard to get along with, and why people don’t bother with him. so as long as he has his brother, his cat, and now ruri, by his side, he can be completely fine. also he has ton of fans around the world that love him exactly for the way he is.
- he appreciates every role that he plays as because his characters are the way he copes with what he’s missing. being an actor helps him deal with the emptiness of his being. he doesn’t do it for the fame, or for the money. he does it because, what else in the world could he do best? he learned to grow passionate about it.

💕 for your drrr insert!
MAN WHERE DO I START
she's so. she's really just the whole package. she does arson. she carries a knife around. she's been in multiple gangs. she spends all her time watching anime and playing video games. she writes self ship fanfiction. she's got a skewed moral compass. she's a tsundere. she has horrible trauma. everyone in ikebukuro desires her carnally. /j
she's so funny because every time you think you've got a grasp on who she is as a person, you realize that you don't — but you do, but you also don't at all. on the surface, she just seems like some kind of weirdo nerd who prefers fictional worlds to the real one — which is true; but then you realize it's because, on top of just being a hobby, that was how she coped with every bad thing the real world forced onto her. and then you realize she's Been Through It™, so you think she's anxious and scared of the world, but that can't be further from the truth — she's a little codependent maybe (though, is it really considered codependency if it's more so the notion of "i've been with this person for damn near a decade, so no kidding i'd be utterly lost if he suddenly disappeared"?), and she still gets scared of things, but she's pointedly unfazed by things she probably really should be fazed by. like that one incident — you know the one; the one with the kidnapping. that one fucked her up — she still, every now and then, has nightmares about that night — but she can still look the guy who did that in the face and mouth off to him without so much as breaking a sweat.
but she's also just... so tragic. she's better now — it's easier to bury now; easier to act like herself again — but there's still so much genuine sadness lingering just below her surface. the seemingly endless amount of fanfics she writes about her and whatever 2D man she's currently into might just seem like a weird hobby at first — and it is — but it's also the only way she can really allow herself to even be loved in the first place. for as much as she thinks about it — hell, for even as much as she's surrounded by it — the concept of a real, tangible love scares her. so she avoids it — denies it in herself; denies it when it's looking her in the face; avoids it at every turn; convinces herself that it doesn't exist at all. if she ignores it, she doesn't have to face it. if she tells herself the person hitting on her isn't serious, then she doesn't have to be, either. if she convinces herself that she's too broken to ever be loved, then being alone won't hurt as much.
but it does hurt — but if she pretends it doesn't, maybe she'll be able to handle it for a little bit longer.

light novel reread, vol. 1 ch. 11
i have a LOT to say here. this is the last actual chapter of volume one, before the epilogue and next prologue.
Tumblr media
the next line uses "joked" as the verb. i feel like kadota and izaya respect each other (at least at this point in the series). i wish their relationship (and shizuo and shinra's with kadota as well) was elaborated on more. i know theyve fought at LEAST once, i just know it. would do anything for a raijin era kadota and izaya fight scene. from the lens of celty being the main character, izaya is such a great (read: horrible) antagonist; he's the personification of her insecurities and the poster child for the subset of humanity that will always see her and treat her as a monster. (izaya is a great antagonist in general. i hate him. i love him.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I LOVE HIM! i say this often but the first novel comes in strong with establishing izaya- we know from the beginning how wickedly smart he is and how unbelievably unstable he is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i just really like this scene; i like the imagery in the second passage a lot. in another light it could be romantic, if it hadn't taken place right after the first passage. and if you had no context.
Tumblr media
celty: man this guys vibes are RANCID. whats with him celty (very opinionated and constantly thinking about morals): oh my god... i have morals.... opinions even......
Tumblr media
(standing on my shinra soapbox) shinra was "raised" being shown that lying and manipulating to get things your way isnt just acceptable but ideal. hes a male manipulator and a little dirtbag and at this point in the narrative he's totally okay with that. coming up in the next few novels we're going to start seeing him internally questioning that and trying (and usually failing) to work on it.
Tumblr media
the face of a man who knows hes in deep shit
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i need you all to know im obsessed with this freak. i know you all know that already. i wanna study him under a microscope. i wanna put him in a jar and shake him. i wanna [redacted].
Tumblr media
these two are horrible for each other <3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
these two are perfect for each other <3
Tumblr media
IZAYA AGAIN.... i hate him this time. the duality of man or whatever
Tumblr media
ok i love him again its ok.

i have to stress what i said about masaomi trying to kill horada in that post though. yeah i think masaomi is driven by a desire to protect others. he spends most of his time feeling guilty over not being able to protect the people he cares about and he thinks of himself as being a bad person. he also tries to smash a guy's skull in with a crowbar and it's basically the one thing he doesn't have a massive guilt complex over. this is one of my favourite things about him.

had a 2pm fever dream where law carries zoro's decapitated head like a bindle around the world and gets into trouble(mostly because zoro is a fucking troll and hes just a head now, apparently, so what else is there for him?). i dont know either
My first thought was like a Durarara!! crossover where Zoro is a dullahan/headless horseman and loses his head while Law: 1) just happens to have found his head or b) purposefully finds his head for Science Reasons (but ends up falling in love with it either way)

Anri Sonohara Appreciation Post
I know yesterday was her birthday, but I was busy with Halloween so I’m just going to post this today. Anri Sonohara is such an underappreciated character and she doesn’t deserve it. She’s amazing and unique and she needs more attention. So I’m going to take a brief moment to gush about her.
I legit can’t believe that it was only this year that I realized that Anri is like one of my top comfort characters. Right next to Shizuo, Masaomi and a few others. Apparently all you need to do to make me mentally adopt a fictional character is make them a victim of bullying and/or abuse. That or be a literal baby. Obviously there is more to it, but that seems to be a big factor. But thinking back, it does make sense. In my teen years I was obsessed with her, and a lot of female characters I made were somewhat inspired by her. I just didn’t get enough of a chance to notice because sadly there just isn’t enough content for her to make me notice. The stuff that IS out there, has her shoehorned in as part of the main trio.
And poor Anri, not only does she get forgotten by the fandom (and even characters in the main story), but also has to go through a real load of shit. She’s an orphan, but only cause one of her parents was an abusive ass that pushed the other to murder, only to then kill themself (that whole scenario is just...a mess but thats the main gist.) Now she’s possessed by a demon sword, which she just about has control over only because she’s numb to the trauma. Then there’s the aforementioned bullying, a pervy teacher, her friends being some secretive weirdos, her female friends also being pervy, and don’t get me started on the gang war thing with Izaya and all that. Yet this girl still comes out at the end with a smile. Like. Wow. I can barely go through a day without finding some aspect of life to be miserable about. Yet here she is. She’s way too tolerant for her own good.
Also, she’s super sweet, and really should have been given more of a chance to be hardcore with her sword and all that. I like that she’s a more feminine character that’s still badass. Way too much fiction has badass females be more stereotypically masculine, and to have her be more gentle and shy is a breath of fresh air. Especially because I and others in this generation, have grown to be rather shy. The best part is, she doesn't necessarily grow to be more social like in other media. Her introvertedness still remains intact, yet she still makes sure to still have connections outside of Mika after the first few arches. It's a development that's healthy both in that it shows its ok to be shy, yet still doesn't enable her to shut herself off to the point of destruction.
I like her design too, and I just wish their was more done with it other than that weird hoodie thing she got going on (while it's more practical, I don't understand why she wears it so often, even in the daytime). She’s cute and deserves more than that and the rule 34 official art. I've seen a lot of really neat fashion redesigns for her, and I'm glad that there seems to be some sort agreement that she needs to wear more pastel with black. Plus the redesigns sort of fit my own fashion sense (if I actually try).
She’s such a wasted character. All that backstory and design, and what happens to it in the end? Like there was a load of build up and then...nothing happened with her. Just Mikado nearly killing himsellf, but then she had no part of it. She didn't even stop the Saika army like she did in the Saika arch. I legit can't remember what happened to her in the end except for that moment in the van with the others. There really should have been more involvement. It's neat that her build up is more internal, but when you have a demon sword on the wall it needs to be used. Please. She became borderline useless.
Oh well. I love her regardless of the flaws in the writing. If I go on any further I’ll just be complaining about how wasted and mistreated she was, and this was meant to be a feel good thing.
See ya~
