Quote
His miracles were a backdrop, a visual aid, to his urgent message. That message was: Sin will kill you, hell is real, God is merciful, his kingdom will change you, I am your passport. Whenever people missed this point—whenever the immediate benefit of his miracles distracted them from eternal things—the Savior backed away.

NAME: Baukbear
RARITY: ★★☆☆☆
THREAT LEVEL: ★★★☆☆ | Physically strong, stealthy, and resilient, but these shadow bears have easily exploited weaknesses and rarely kill outright.
HABITAT: Caves, abandoned buildings, tunnels and other very dark areas.
DESCRIPTION: Baukbears are grizzly bear sized ursine predators that manipulate darkness. Unlike the bugbears they are distantly related to, baukbears are not shapeshifters. Bestial and aggressive, they emerge in the night to drag prey back to their dens, sometimes habitually announcing themselves by barking “bau bau bau”. Being bears, they have impressive physical strength, but are also clumsy and blinded by bright light. Baukbears rarely kill their prey outright, and instead prefer to eat them alive in the safety of their dens. Baukbears are strictly nocturnal and burn in sunlight similarly to vampires.
ABILITIES: Resilient and physically powerful creatures, baukbears can potentially overpower even paranormal beings with enhanced strength. They are also unnervingly stealthy for such big predators, as they seem to magically meld with darkness and shadows. As long as it’s sufficiently dark, a baukbears can move completely unseen past groups of people despite some of them being larger than many cars.
WEAKNESS: Baukbears are disoriented in bright light and are destroyed in sunlight. A flashlight will typically blind them long enough for a victim to get away. They aren’t agile enough to make sharp turns and will run into or straight through walls if someone gets out of the way of their charge. Their habit of capturing prey alive gives time to rescue the victims from the baukbear’s den.
OTHER VARIANTS:
Glarebear: A subspecies found in colder regions with a stark white coat like a polar bear, so bright it hurts to look at it directly. Glarebears also take prey back to their den to eat, but instead of melding into the shadows, glarebears use and manipulate the light. They’re named for their tendency to inhabit snowy areas and seemingly appear out of nowhere from the reflection of the sun on the snow. Their dens tend to be on high peaks, usually in shallow depressions within the ground but with no ceiling or obstruction above.
Dropbear: Originally described in Australia and thought to be a joke, dropbears are baukbears that lie in wait on high locations, jumping on the unaware victim as they pass underneath. These baukbears are unusually hardy, not often being harmed by falling from great heights. They knock their prey unconscious and eat them right then and there, without bringing them to the den. Usually dropbears will have their cubs nearby to watch the hunting technique and share in the meal.

Right, I remembered I used to write about shows I went to back in the day...so here's a small blurb from when I braved the cold weather, a really cold walk in January from the bus stop to the venue to see Dropbear (Instagram|Spotify) and quite frankly I was blown away by it. I knew of the band via IG stories from SimpsonsXCore, a favorite meme page of mine (and if you know anything about me, Simpsons memes and references are the fastest way to my cold dark heart) so it was a while before the planets aligned and the time to see them live finally came around. What I heard was outstanding. Passionate rock music that gives you a bit of late 90s/early 2000s vibes. If you get a chance to see them live, when they play their next show, do it. It's worth the hike, and depending on when/where, the cold temps.

Collections of poetry and essays about the continuing effects of Australia’s colonial history This book won the 2022 Stella Prize and shortly afterwards I picked up a copy from Harry Hartog. I am not a huge reader of poetry but there has been some exceptional work published recently from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander authors and I was very eager to read this award-winning example. It is…

apologies for being australian on main two times in a row but i find it really funny when people from other countries are first learning about the creatures we have over here and are just. so confused and bewildered. i remember that post of someone talking about how instead of the Easter Bunny, we have a mascot called the Easter Bilby and someone reblogged it going "what the fuck", and i'm just sitting there like "..... yeah? i thought everyone knew this" and it's very entertaining. seeing people be genuinely bewildered, confused and afraid that this silly lil guy exists,
Tumblr media
is some of the most entertaining shit ever and it'll never get old
this is the Greater Bilby, by the way, and it is currently a vulnerable species in Australia, with many efforts being made to save it from endangerment and extinction. there used to be a lot more of them, but because of threats to habitat and competition with other animals (like red foxes, feral cats and dingoes), they became an endangered species, though they fortunately now no longer hold that status. the Lesser Bilby is much less lucky though, as they were unfortunately deemed extinct in the 1950s. i love these lil guys so much and i want to hold one in my hands and give it a nice soft blanket in it's little burrow to curl up and fall asleep on :)

as an american i truly deeply believe from the bottom of my heart that the reason none of us can come up with an insult about strayans that actually managed to pack any sort of punch is bc it is relatively common knowledge in the west that australia used to be a penal colony. and yall play it up, lean into it, wear your hick ingenuity and general bugfuckery on your sleeve even as you scoff patronizingly at some of the most dangerous and unique wildlife on the planet. but most americans are simply unaware that much in the same way the australian colonial project began as a place for imperialist britain's criminals to get banished to forever, the american colonial project began as a haven for britain's weirdest and niche-est pseudo-christian cults. and thats really our colonial heritage and legacy over here, its effect on literally every aspect of american life cannot be overstated. and most of us are walking around completely oblivious to that. so to me its sort of like if there were two clowns, right, and the first clown is acting like a normal clown, doing typical clown stuff. but the second clown is, like, sardonically mocking the first clown for looking and acting like a clown, in such a way as to suggest that he is completely unaware he is also wearing clown makeup and a costume and a rainbow wig and a red nose and big shoes
this actually. makes alot more sense. only recently learnt the reasons them first pilgrims made their way to the americas in the first place and yeah it tracks. god does it ever track.

People are like ‘ohhhh the spiders the snakes the kangaroos’ when talking about Australia but what about the humble drop bear???? The lovely bush turkeys??? Those stupid little fish that go blorp at the beach???
But also where’s the fear for those caterpillars that migrate in lines and have spines that cause severe reactions??? The other caterpillars that spit acid at you? What about the fish that if you step on it you might be paralysed???
