...

All Whumpee could see was Whumper crouched over them, watching as they sputtered and coughed up blood, vision going dark around the edges.

Whumper shook Whumpee's shoulder, which caused Whumpee to moan in pain. "Hey, Whumpee, don't give up on me, okay?" Their voice was softer than Whumpee had ever heard it. "You're much more use to me alive than dead. I don't want to lose you now."

Whumpee was limp as Whumper carried them over to a bed. "Get some rest. I'll keep you alive, and then we can get back to business." Whumper's words faded away as they closed their eyes, their last sight Whumper's cruel, yet concerned, eyes.

...

(some time later)

"Whumpee? Oh my god, Whumpee, stay with me!"

Whumpee couldn't help but watch Caretaker's eyes dart around as they tried to think of something to do. "You-you saved- me..." Whumpee stammered.

Caretaker took Whumpee's hand in theirs and gave it a gentle sqeeze. "Yeah, I guess I did," they began, tears racing down their cheeks. "Don't give up on me, alright? I don't want to have rescued you for nothing."

Whumpee smiled through the pain. "Y-yeah. I want to go home."

"I'll get you home. I promise. Until then, stay alive for me?"

"Yep." It was all Whumpee could say before everything went dark again, however this time they wanted to make it to the other side.

Our Writing Process + Tips! (Part One)

When December 17th arrives, it'll mark four months since the release of Don't Give Up On Me! on itch.io.

Time flies so fast! And there hasn't been a single day where I didn't think about this visual novel ever since it came out. All of its story moments still stick with me. Of course, it might be weird for me to say that, as I am one of the writers of the whole game alongside my dear friend and artist Ryuzi_nea. Maybe it's a bit biased. But I would argue otherwise.

Don't Give Up On Me! was something we both gave extreme attention to detail and overall care. We've spent an entire year developing this game together, having necessary breaks when we couldn't focus on the game properly, just so that it'd have the attention it deserved at the proper time. It's not an incomplete game, nor one we'd like to do differently if we had the chance. It's a genuine fulfilled vision - and something we are proud of. And seeing some of the reactions to the game itself is just a confirmation that it was all worth it.

The reason I write this series of devlogs is to reflect and share a bit of how the entire writing process went down. Many things sticked, many things changed. Many scenes were rewritten over and over. Many inspirations were taken from various sources. By sharing all of that with you, dear reader, I sincerely hope some of the things here serve as tips for your own writing - be it for a visual novel, be it for something else.

In this part one, I will talk about how the project came to be - after all, how was the whole concept of Don't Give Up On Me! born?

Well, there are a lot of great ones out there, but I can definitely say It's Never Too Late by @silversundown2 is beautiful and gives us that spinoff fix we were robbed of elsewhere. But, oops, this is supposed to be a positivity post. Do you mean my favorite trope in general? I'm not sure to be honest but I can tell you my least favorite is love triangles lol

So I'm leaving work and something darts in front of me, maybe 10ft away, too fast for me to see what it is. Peek around the tree blocking my path and I see this

Just like... a whole ass hawk. Dude's gotta be about 1.5ft tall. Massive fucking bird. And it's just staring me straight in my soul like this, even as I try to move ahead. It didn't budge. And there's only this path back to my car unless I want to walk on a busy highway. So I have the option of Death By Raptor or Death By Truck.

So I walk in the poison ivy filled patch off the sidewalk. Guy still isn't moving. Still staring me directly in the eyes. And I do this thing when animals are behaving strangely where I'll talk to them, so I'm just like, "Hey, man. I don't know you. You don't know me. This feels really threatening. I'm just trying to get to my car, dude. Can I get some space please? You're a big fucking bird. I see those claws. You could kill me right now, but I'd appreciate if you didn't, ok?"

It didn't move until I was about 2ft away. Again: I'm as far from it as I can be without walking into the street. It clearly wasn't going to budge. I walk past, thing flies up (silent, btw. Scary) and lands on a brick wall a little further ahead

Anyway. Weird guy. Nearly shit my pants when I noticed a bird big enough to carry off a fully grown cat was just... there, staring me in the face, unwilling to move away from me, a human, something it should see as a threat. I watched behind me the whole rest of the way to my car, just in case this bird decided to help me shed this mortal coil. 10/10 experience. Super cool guy.

I am fine with "the audience" -

downloading my fics

printing my fics

copy/pasting or screenshotting my fics

sharing your saved copy of my fics with anyone else who might want them in the unlikely but never impossible case that my fics are no longer available on ao3

making a book of my fic(s) and running your fingers across the pages while lovingly whispering my precioussss

doing these things with anything I create for fandom, such as meta, headcanons, au nonsense like 'texts from the brodinsons,' etc

I am not fine with "the audience"

doing any of the above with the purpose/intent of plagiarizing my work or passing it off as their own in any capacity

feeding my work into ai for any reason whatsoever

Save the fandom things. Preserve the fandom things. Respect the fandom things.

Enjoy the fandom things.

"But if college was free, then people would abuse that and get useless degrees" hell yeah I would! If I could go to college without debt I would make it my job to get a degree in every little thing that interested me. I'd get a doctorate in film studies. I'd have a bachelor's degree for every science I like. I'd try to learn at least 5 languages with varying results. I would learn something "useful" like coding and then follow it up with a ""useless"" degree like art history. I'd be the world record speed run holder for getting every degree possible.

But I can't afford college without going into massive debt, so instead I spent the last 5 years trying to figure out what I am passionate enough about to consider going into debt over, because unfortunately being passionate about everything is extremely expensive to pursue.
