It's time to talk about Mila. At the end, there will be pictures and video.

Monthly update!

Well, I guess it's every 3 weeks, really. That's the first adjustment - Mila's treatments have been adjusted to every 21 days. They're working and keeping her steady right now, which is all we can ask.

The oncologist was pleased with her status when he saw her last Friday. She took her most recent chemo treatment at home on Saturday & will be getting bloodwork on this coming Saturday, which is also Evie's birthday.

That was one of my goals - I really hoped she'd make it to Evie's birthday, which is a few weeks before her own birthday in the last week of November. I'm really hopeful at this point that Mila will get to turn 7. (Trying not to hex it by thinking about it too hard, tbh.)

We're in Miracle Time now. This is time that we KNOW we wouldn't have had without your help - six weeks is really the outside of how long dogs survive on just steroids - and it feels like a miracle.

She's pigging out every day, and we're letting her. As long as she wants to eat, we're gonna let her, and boy, she WANTS to eat. Mila is getting a chubby tummy and it's the best thing. She's happy and hungry and pretty much only wants for Emet to lay on the shop couch so she can lay on their chest.

We're gonna treasure that.

I mean, look at this tummy.

I'm going to adjust the goal upwards for Mila's next treatment. If you can help, wonderful. If not... thank you. You all have helped us so much.

my dog is dying and i cant even cuddle him to comfort him and myself because he fucking hates me. hes never liked me much but even less now that hes old and tired and hurting. when i try to pet him he runs away. he doesnt even do his morning routine of circling in between my legs and/or headbutting me and wagging his tail anymore. its like theres a furry ghost in my house and not knowing when hes going to go is making things infinitely worse

Mila is so beautiful. I don’t know if this can lighten grief a little for you. It did for me. It helps to remind ourselves that dogs don’t know what death is. Not their own death. They don’t fear it. They don’t mourn it in advance. All Mila knows and all Mila will ever know is that you’re there, you’re always there and you’re always wrapping her in love. You know how it feels to drift off to sleep in the arms of someone you love profoundly? That’s all it will be for her. Love. And rest. <3

I know. I do know. And it helps a little to know I've been able to plan ahead so that if all goes well, she'll just lie down on the couch with Daddy for a nap and never wake up.

But I know. I know what's coming. And it hurts.

And that's okay, to be clear. It's okay that it hurts. It should hurt. It sucks that it hurts, but it should hurt. That's the price of loving our pets. It hurts because I love her.

I have never known a dog that more embodies the Rudyard Kipling lines, "the body that lived at your single will" and "the spirit that answered your every mood" than Mila where Emet is concerned. And so it hurts when I forget and then I remember.

It's as okay as it can be. She's happy Now, and Now is all she understands.

west had a cluster seizure over the weekend… his first seizures ever, so we took him to the hospital

they kept him for a couple days, but as of today he’s home. he’ll be on anticonvulsants from now on, so he’ll be a bit wobbly til he gets used to them, but other than that he’s doing alright

One of the hardest things about working in a veterinary ER is delivering bad news. I feel like at least once a shift someone is blindsided by their pet being diagnosed with a condition they’ve never heard of before. In many cases this is unavoidable but I really feel that some of the most common critical emergencies I see would be easier for owners to process if they had prior knowledge about the illness.

The following infographic is far from a comprehensive list and truthfully I have a LOT more to say about diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of each of these conditions. However, this image shows just a few of the major points that I wish owners had been able to prepare for prior to hearing about them in the ER. Some of these conditions are preventable and some are not but they all require an owner to make difficult decisions in a crisis situation. If your pet fits into one of these categories, please just do a quick google about the condition, and maybe discuss with your vet signs that you can watch for at home.
