If there was one animal literacy thing I could change with a wave of a wand, it would be increasing people's understanding of how dangerous megafauna are. I think that in the US (and probably other Western countries too), we're so removed from wildlife and even large domesticated animals that people really have no perspective on how much a big animal can fuck you up. Even if they're "gentle."
This is a discussion going on on Twitter, too, the last few days: there was a thing where an Iditarod musher shot a moose to protect their team, and a lot of people are confused as to why that needed to happen. Apparently this moose had been hanging around the course for quite a while and was becoming quite dangerous to the sled dog teams. Moose are territorial and not to be fucked with. Everyone from Alaska or areas with moose are like "yup, that's just reality."
Same thing with the bison birth I watched last year. Folk really thought the staff should be in the habitat on the ground with the bison herd, helping with the birth. Sure, that's what we do with cows if we have to, but... bison are definitely not cows and, again, will squish you.
People tend to get it more with the predators. Few people will argue that a cougar or an alligator or a bear isn't dangerous. I think people kinda go both ways on wild pigs / boars depending on their experience. But herbivores or things that don't look traditionally pointy... it just kinda doesn't click.
Any large animal is probably stronger than you think and more likely to hurt you than you realize. Be it a dolphin, an elk, a sea lion, or even an emperor penguin... just don't go near them, buds.

As summer is approaching, I’d like to share this bird-friendly beach etiquette reminder. A lot of people let their dogs roam freely on the beach, but dogs that chase wildlife can have a detrimental effect on the animals that have no choice but to share the shoreline with us. Please enjoy the summer with your pets and make sure to give wild animals plenty of space!

I got an email from my local shelter with tips for keeping pets safe this holiday. So I just want to spread the word:
July 4th Fireworks can trigger anxiety in pets
Fireworks can cause anxiety in our pets that may last for a long time. Signs of stress include: shaking, drooling, howling or barking, pacing, trying to find a place to hide, and loss of bladder control.
When scared, some dogs may show aggressive behavior, and some may be so scared they run off.
Here are 3 tips to make sure you and your pet are prepared for the holiday:
Make sure that your pet is wearing a collar with identification tags; if they are microchipped, ensure that the contact information is current and correct in case they become lost.
Set your pet up in a quiet, temperature-controlled room with some of their favorite toys; turn on some soft music, a television, or a white noise machine to help drown out the noises caused by fireworks. A room with no windows can also block out the bright lights.
There are medications to help reduce stress and anxiety, so speak with your veterinarian to determine which, if any, medication would be appropriate for your pet.
Additional Summer Safety Tips
Keep your pet safe and healthy by following these important basic guidelines:
Prevention is always your best bet. Whenever possible, leave your pet at home in a cool humidity and temperature-regulated room.
If your pet must be outdoors, find a shady spot with ample air flow to prevent overheating.
Hydration is key, so keep a bowl of cold water accessible at all times.
Limit exercise to the morning or evening hours when temperatures are at their coolest.
Never leave your pet alone in a parked car — even with the air conditioner on or the windows cracked. Remember, when the temperatures rise, it’s Too Hot for Spot®

How to de-escalate a dog charging at you

Turn 90' so its coming to your side, not your front. do not react much, and keep eyes on animal. Let it investigate but be ready to react if things turn sour. this just helps confuse and give dogs time to figure out your not dangerous, and also not interested in a hyper interaction.

HAPPY INTERNATIONAL LION DAY
This celebration was founded by Big Cat Rescue, the world’s largest accredited sanctuary dedicated to big cats.
Even though they are sometimes referred to as the 'king of the jungle', lions are under grave threat due to a number of man-made issues, including poaching and deforestation. The lion population is rapidly declining. Therefore to spread awareness about the lions and the issues faced by them World Lion Day is observed on August 10 every year.
Lion numbers have dramatically declined to the point where the species needs to be placed on the endangered list, just like its larger cousin the tiger.
According to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, lions are a “vulnerable” species, meaning that their numbers could and should be higher. Currently, researchers estimate that there are between 30,000 and 100,000 lions left on planet Earth.
Over the course of five decades, the global lion population has decreased by about 90%.
The threats against lions are many: they face the dual specters of increasingly popular “trophy hunting” and human incursion on their traditional wildlands. A reduction in food combined with hunting tourism is making them more vulnerable with every passing year.
Raise awareness on Lion Day and the issues that the species faces in the wild, share photos of this big cat with your friends, support the protection of natural habitats.
Facts about lions
• While female lions perform the majority of the hunting, male lions guard the pride's territory. Nevertheless, the males always eat first.
• The most social of all the big cats, African lions live in packs called 'prides'. About 15 lions make up a pride.
• While a lion can run at 50 mph for short distances and leap 36 feet, its roar can be heard up to five miles away.
• The colour of a male lion's mane is a reliable indicator of his age. The older the lion, the darker his mane.
• Lions are the second-largest cat in the world, just behind the Asian tiger.
• Lions are typically found in grasslands and plains rather than the forests.

Found a little blue tongue lizard in my laundry today and it might have been injured a little, but the little cutie crawled onto my hand and let me carry it outside.

It’s Christmas Day and I’m dog sitting. I took Shelli, a sheltie, out for a walk, and within the span of ten minutes, we were charged three times by other dogs, once by an off leash shepherd mix that thankfully I know pretty well and was able to safely grab. If Shelli was not well trained, these incidents could have ended very badly.
I like this other dog a lot, but I grabbed her very roughly by the hips to drag her back. I did not hesitate to harm her to protect Shelli. If I needed to be more violent, I would have. This is true of just about any dog walker you meet. They WILL harm your dog to protect their own. Be proactive!
If you’re dog is not well trained, make a point to announce it when encountering other dog walkers. A bright yellow collar and leash are also helpful. It’s more than decency; it’s safety.

If your child is old enough to learn boundaries with people and appropriate behavior around people they're old enough and aware enough to learn boundaries and appropriate behavior around animals.
Its really that simple.

#1 ZEBRA ain't a "PET"
#2 I think we can likely assume that someone was not treating the animals properly and the animal was traumatized and trying to stop the human.
at least that's my take on it...

Every once in a while I think of those “stupid laws” ads on YouTube and the one that’s making fun of Rhode Island (?) for having a law against unrestrained animals in the backseat and I’m like
That’s not a stupid law actually that’s a very good law. Please put your pets in a crate or attach them to a seatbelt when driving. If something happens it will be so much safer for them this way. It’s a VERY good law and imo it should be universal.

Remember to check your engine for cats before you drive in this extreme cold!!!
Stray, outdoor, and feral cats will crawl into car engines after they have been used for warmth. If you have an outdoor cat it should be brought in.
Furthermore, this weather is too cold for most dogs. Do not leave them out for any extended period of time, unless you're the proud and unlucky owner of a husky.
