CRITICAL ROLE CAMPAIGN 3 EPISODE 85 SPOILERS
IM LITERALLY ABOUT TO LOSE MY MIND YALL
Where do I even ??? start ???
I haven't been posting c3 as the episodes dropped in...a while actually, like right before they went to the feywild. i have many thoughts and many feelings about so many things that have happened since then and I'll summarise them so I can get to THIS episode.
fearne and ashton - love their shard powers, they're literally royalty and terrifying, and i want them to make-out. i can't wait to see them go full primordial again in a real combat situation.
imogen - save her. literally save her. free her, even. i love everything about the call of ruidus when it comes to imogen on a narrative standpoint, but...God I get so worried that we're gonna lose her. I don't mean she's gonna betray the hells, but...ruidus could take her and then i would simply perish.
laudna - before i really get into wtf went down this episode with her and she who must not be named, i gotta say... im worried. very very worried. however, that fireball was objectively the best shit ever.
fcg - i can't even really remember anything stand out abt fcg except what Sam pulled last night so.
chetney - still the heart of the team, still my baby girl, still my favourite. love him to bits.
orym - i think laudna is going to beat his ass one of these days and im... even more concerned about that after this episode. his nana morri powers are cool as fuck tho... does that make him a warlock now? i know he isn't multi-classing but wouldn't that be cool
ANYWAY WE'RE ON THE FUCKING MOON AND WE GOT MOON LORE AND EVERYTHING WAS SHITTY THEN FUN THEN SHITTY THEN FUN AGAIN THEN REALLY FUCKING SAD THEN IT ALL WENT TO SHIT AGAIN.
the moment imogen reached out to ruidus and matt mentioned that she could sense where other ruidusborn were i fucking knew that otohan was high tailing it in their direction, and i thought they instinctively knew that too but they probably got so distracted.
we were travelling for hours and had a huge fight that almost got them captured (not to be confused with the OTHER two fights that almost got them captured) and I was begging and screaming and crying for them to get a long rest safely hidden away AND THEN THEY SPLIT THE PARTY WITH BARELY ANY SPELL SLOTS OR HIT POINTS AFTER BEING DRAINED FROM ANOTHER BATTLE WHAT IS WRONG WITH THEM
(Sidenote, the willmaster really opened up the door to the further increase in moral pondering in a certain number of hellians. i do think using the harness is disgusting and hypocritical, but i don't condemn them for it, it just...makes me wanna vomit thinking abt what ludinus did with it. not to mention the HUNGER parallels between laudna and ludinus...its just not good yall. also??? objectively funny that fcg seemed weirded out by the idea of killing the willmaster, not just with the harness but in general, considering how many people they've killed up to this point)
idk if its just the inherent terror that an evil old hot lady can inspire that makes otohan so much more terrifying to me than ludinus. like, objectively, ludinus is a worse threat and could wipe them out EASILY but jesus otohan is like the damn reaper to me. it's the trauma from the laudna, fearne, orym massacre mixed with the underlying little drop from their uthodurn romp that let us know that resurrection spells are NOT working and idk if that got fixed bc of time passing or distance from the leylines but i really did not want to test that shit out in real time
thank...god that sam riegel is a damn genius player, that banishment of fcg and fearne was the ONLY reason fcg survived. and thank GOD FOR KEYLETH BECAUSE WITHOUT THAT CLOUD SPELL BELLS HELLS WOULD BE VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY DEAD RN.
God, "otohan has us. run." is going to haunt me just as much, if not more than the almost tpk. it just...shot me straight back to bassuras and the plan to run that just...immediately fell apart.
god fcg truly could have died there. and fearne would be captured. i know the hells would be too stupid and too brave and too loyal to leave fearne with otohan in their cloud form but can you imagine a world where fcg was gone, fearne was captured and the hells had to switch from recon to rescue... itd be stressful but pretty fun.
thankfully it didn't come to that and some good came from the shit.
ruidus is so beautiful. i was worried they'd end being trapped under ruidus while they explored (not that I wasn't on board with the detours, I wish this wasn't a time sensitive mission), but matt's imagery of the fossilized elven structure and garden made me sad but also happy that we got to see it.
i cannot believe that the stupid plan to shove fearne up a water hole happened AGAIN and it ended up with us FINDING A BACK HOLE TO RUIDUS GOD I LOVE THESE CHUCKLEFUCKS WHEN IS THE NEXT EPISODE MATT YOU CANNOT DO THIS TO ME. WHERE EVEN ARE THEY??? IS IT EVEN EXANDRIA???? WHAT DO WE DO IF IT IS EXANDRIA??? WHERE DID THIS HOLE EVEN COME FROM???? DOES IT CLOSE AND REOPEN??? IS IT STAGNANT?????? IS IT FUCKING STABLE?!?!?!?!?!
God...we could go back to keyleth and the others and actually invade ruidus without encountering the ruby vanguard. (that's if they're alright because otohan did go out onto the battlefield and we don't know what fhe fuck she did when the illusion fell through)
GOD. IS IT THURSDAY YET??? WE HAVENT EVEN FOUND THE RESISTANCE????

I haven't seen WBN, so I can't comment on the comparison, but on the subject of Liliana, one of my favorite parts of last night was how Matt anwsered Fearne's question about how Liliana got involved with Ludinus. The whole scene with Liliana was stellar, but that answer made it so clear that is she is in a cult. The way Ludinus found her while she was unsure and looking for answers, mentored her, and showed her the "truth" about Predathos is a classic cult recruitment story. And her reasonings for staying in the cult after having recognizing some of its faults also rang true. She needs to "protect the children", the methods are wrong but the "truth" at the heart of their mission is right, the us vs. them mentality and fear of the exandrian authorities, etc. And I can see how that can make her sympathetic. She was taken in and conditioned by a charismatic, powerful leader. But Matt and the others have also made it clear, including in that scene, that she is complicit, and that the pcs at least recognize that her guilt does not absolve her. The members of the Manson Family who committed the Tate Murders may have been indoctrinated by Charles Manson, but they still killed 5 people in an incredibly grusome manner. The fact that they were following orders doesn't absolve them of their crime. And historically, cult leadership (which Liliana seems to be) who attempt to "fix" a cult either don't make any meanful change, or actually make it worse. I, at least, am very curious to see what will have happened in that regard when she next shows up. In short, people need to learn about nuance, and maybe sociology, and the Liliana scene was fantastic.
Hello anon. Are you spying on my Discord messages. This is not an accusation but I literally brought up the Manson Family there in discussion of how a lot of the WBN fandom in that like, people see wizards of the citadel (rightfully) as The War-Mongering Establishment, but forget that actually, there exist plenty of counterculture groups that also suck and just bc the US Government does horrible things doesn't mean the Manson Family doesn't. What if the Citadel AND a lot of Witches fucking sucked.*
To get back to Critical Role though, YEAH the Vanguard has been hitting every single aspect of a cult, and look. I get that the best way to get people irl out of a cult is to just be present for them when they decide to leave and not cut them off (the same is true for how to help people in abusive relationships) but also once they start murdering I feel that is no longer the move. The Liliana scene made me deeply uncomfortable and unsettled in the best way, namely, I knew they were talking to a cult member who is in too deep for them to get her out right now, and who has done terrible things to innocent people in service to that cult. Which brings me back to the first paragraph: a very true twist on "what if both sides of a conflict sucked" is "what if the victim of a system can still perpetuate the harm of a system onto others". (Also, if we want to throw Midst into the list of things where people have no-nuance no-sociology takes, and talk more about Steel? "what if someone with power within a system can still be a victim thereof."
Like, that is a really consistent set of issues in media analysis, actually. There's a lot of "this is the good side, and this is the bad side," and "this is a victim, and this is a perpetrator" and no understanding of "both sides are bad (or even complicated)" and "wow it's almost like the way systems and especially cults keep running is because everyone except the very top is to an extent a victim, but also everyone is a perpetrator." Very few people are unfettered evildoers doing it just for kicks. You can have sympathy for Liliana and also acknowledge that it's pretty valid for Orym to have no room for that sympathy. Traumatized and manipulated people can still be shitty people.
*I'm neutral-to-faint-positive on Suvi/Ame as a ship but actually "wow both our establishments really suck, how can we make something better together" is a great basis for a ship and "oh my god no witches are perfect and right and wizards are Bad and Wrong you're so correct about everything" is a dogshit basis for a ship which I think is worth highlighting given that we are in fandom spaces here although I may come to regret this when I'm sober.

Epistolary or Diegetic Fics!
Tumblr media
This week we have eight fics that feature text that the characters could read themselves! Letters, abstracts, texts, and the occasional sending, they're all featured under the cut!
like coloured indigo inscribed with my name by KmacKatie (kmackatie) (30,648, Teen) Warnings: None Pairings: The Mighty Nein & Essek Thelyss, Shadowgast
Mighty Nein Group texts and Shadowgast slowburn
Reccer says: What I like about it: The formatting is so good, and the chat messages capture the different character voices so good. It has very cozy found family vibes with the usual M9 shenenigans. A feelgood read! Best read on a computer for the full experience of the format.
Tumblr media
You'll Hear When I Do by Beauteousmajesty (1,273, General) Warnings: None Pairings: Mentions of Yeza/Veth
Felderwin residents gossip about alleged sightings of Veth Brenatto in town, years after she was supposed to have died.
Reccer says: This fic feels just like you'd expect small town gossip to feel. It's fun to see how the Nein's antics would look from the perspective of random townspeople who only see them from afar.
Tumblr media
From the Mixed-Up Files of The J. Lavorre Catalogue Raisonné by renquise (2328, General) Warnings: none Pairings: none
A selection of commentary on Jester Lavorre's art
Reccer says: I love thinking about how the Mighty Nein would be remembered, hundreds of years on, and this is an amazing fic exploring what the art history world would make of Jester.
Tumblr media
a book of light by vietbluecoeur (vietbluefic) (1558, Teen) Warnings: Pairings: Deirta Thelyss & Essek Thelyss
Snippets into the private writings of a saint, following the death of a heretic
Reccer says: I like delving into the complications of Essek and Deirta's relationship, especially from Deirta's point of view! This fic does so well
Tumblr media
From the Case Files of the Corrington Scandal Investigation by Professor_Rye (2594, Mature) Warnings: SA/Rape (implied) Pairings: The Mighty Nein & Essek Thelyss, Ludinus Da'leth/Essek Thelyss
A case file about the kidnapping and subsequent rescue of a certain drow. Modern AU.
Reccer says: The attention to detail and wonderful execution of the epistolary format, the way the narrative slowly unravels, and of course, the angst.
Tumblr media
last letter by bittersnake (1373,General) Warnings: None Pairings:
Irme's letter to Nydas Okiro, right before everything happened.
Reccer says: I liked it
Tumblr media
The Number You Have Reached Is Not In Service by Killbothtwins (225,Teen) Warnings: None Pairings: Orym & Dorian Storm

Tumblr media
Descriptions of a River Flowing by Operafloozy (6427,Teen) Warnings: None Pairings: None

Orympost I dare you. Consider me the sick fuck egging you on
me reading this ask
ok so. i love Orym so much and I truly have too many thoughts abt him to be contained in one post so let's just start with the trauma, the thing that defines Orym not just as a character but also discursively. this discussion often feels very surface level, not much more than a simple acknowledgment that Orym is sad bc dead family. which is a shame, bc the thing that really strikes me about Orym's grief is not simply that he has it but how deeply it has shaped him, consumed him. the death of his family often gets used as a reason no one should ever challenge him on anything ever, which is an incredibly unproductive and unhealthy way to view trauma, and also obscures the much more compelling and poignant truth; Orym is absolutely not handling his trauma productively or healthily. i have made a meme to further express my feelings on the matter.
Tumblr media
so, i remember quite well the first time i watched Orym's resurrection in episode 34.
when he sees Will in the afterlife and says, the most sincere he's ever sounded (and he is so sincere all the time), "I really wish I could stay." and in that moment i realized; oh, Orym would rather be dead right now. Orym would rather be dead right now, because it would mean he got to be with Will and Derrig.
another moment i think about a lot: when he's talking with Uther, a member of the Gorgynei, in episode 42, about naming his sword and about their times traveling, and Uther says: "it's nice to have a home finally, after traveling for a long time. i hope you and your friends can find a home, or return to the ones you have."
and Orym says: "I'll think of a name [for his sword]."
it's a fun kind of synergy that Orym is a dex based character who is also, emotionally, so slippery and avoidant. always deflecting. he's defined by his steadfastness in battle and his stubborn refusal to change outside of it. it's notable how stagnant Orym felt, as a character, up until the Issylra arc. very intentionally so; he's likely been in a state of paralysis for much of the last 6 years. he really wishes he could stay. i don't think he's accepted that he can't.
or that there's reasons not to: of all of the many Orym moments i think about all of the time, the one i think about by far the most is his conversation with the Wildmother, all the way back in EXU, when she tells him, so lovingly:
"There is so much I would have you see."
that, more than anything, is the line that defines Orym to me. you can see glimpses of it, in his love for the Hells, his amazement when he's dancing with the spirits or watching Ashton blow 200 gold gambling; on the other hand, in his refusal to really engage with the gods debate (as stated by Liam himself) or his continued discomfit with some of his friend's oddities. there is so much world, so much beauty, so much love still out there for Orym to experience, if he would simply let himself. revenge is nice, i hope he gets it, but it will simply never be enough. it will not give him the capacity to love fully again, and if he gets the revenge and not the love he will end up empty, hallowed out, leading a life always wishing he could be somewhere else.
right now he's regressing, reduced down to nothing but that painful wound, abandoning even so much of his kindness and reason. the hells can help, and they should and they will, because they have so much love to give. but Orym will have to open himself up to it, to them, first. i really hope he does!!

Orym keeps using his brain in battle, when everyone is going "let him go feral" he keeps being strategic, he could have attacked any part of Otohan, but he went for something he thought could be important to make her weaker. In the first battle against her he went to protect Imogen instead of trying to exact revenge, he controls himself really well. The same happens about his guilt, he does feel guilt, but it's the kind of guilt in which you know it is misplaced, yes, he feels a bit of guilty over the others bringing back him instead of Laudna, but he knows it wasn't his decision, he feels guilt over Eshteross, but he didn't betrayed him, he was a victim of an attack that lead to that end, and also, they warned him. I think he will feel guilt over Keyleth, but they were way over their heads with the Ruidus shit, he was right on calling her, and for what we saw, she and really Vax, were the intended victims all along, as a matter of fact, Derrig and Will died because Vax was the target all this time, Orym was right on calling Keyleth even if it went wrong. Where am I going with this? Yes, Orym could break because it has been a lot, but I think he will fight that because there's a lot of people that need him right now, and that takes precedence, and yes, I think he will feel guilt at some level, but I also think that Orym has a way of looking at things with objectivity. The funny thing is that I see Orym this way because of how he talks about his biological father and his dad. His biological father isn't in his life, but he doesn't talk about him in a resented kind of way, he accepts that his father left them, but is his father's problem, it has nothing to do with Orym, for whatever reason his father went away Orym doesn't take it as something personal, it had to do with his father, not himself. On the other hand is Derrig, someone that clearly took the role of a dad in Orym's life, and again, I don't think that for Orym it has to do with himself, but rather with what kind of person Derrig was. Derrig was a good person so he took a role in the life of a kid that needed it, Tarrintel (I think that was the last name) isn't that good of a person so he left his kid behind, the kid itself has nothing to do with what the two adults did. So after all of this shit Orym is left where he always has been, in a very big world, with a lot of problems that are bigger than what he thinks he can handle, or that he thinks he should handle, but he will keep on trying because really, what else is there to do? There are people in need and he can at least try to do something, so he will.

I think my problem with the moral greyification of the prime deities is that, for the last two campaigns, the two exandria unlimited campaigns, and tlovm, critical role portrayed the prime deities as benevolent and actively helpful, at the very least willing to fight for and protect mortal beings. Every time someone in C3 asks “what have the gods done for us?” we, the fans, are going to remember stuff like Melora shielding Fjord from Uk’otoa under the Arbor Exemplar, or Pike and her relationship to Sarenrae, or Vex shooting an arrow created by a cleric while radiating sunlight from her blessing from Pelor. We, the fans, have pretty good reason to like the gods. Hell, the last time we had a “the prime deities are bad actually” argument it was from Asmodeus, lord of the hells, prince of lies, and he later subverted his sympathy for the devil shtick in a scene that would go down in history as one of the best in Critical Role. I think now we’re looking at people complaining about the gods and it’s jarring because to us it seems like it came out of nowhere with a lot of evidence against it. “What have the gods done for us?” Fucking a lot.
(Also, it’s true that the C3 characters haven’t seen what we have, but Laudna was brought back by a cleric of Sarenrae and Orym has a literal sword blessed by the Wildmother. The gods actually have done things for them)
Another, smaller thing is that the Prime Deities in Critical Role aren’t associated with the hate and oppression and violence that is tied to modern religious institutions (which was something I thought was to CR’s detriment given the existence of Vasselheim, and I actually do like them showing the dark side of Vasselheim now). We haven’t been given a reason to hate religion beforehand, and even now that we do, we can argue that the actions taken by mortals in the name of their god does not justify the eradication of said god. Anyway, I think this just goes back into the “it’s jarring, it seemed to have come out of left field” concept.
The last thing is I’m honestly sick of hearing the players and NPCs debating why we should help the Prime Deities since they’re #problematic. Who gives a fuck. Imagine if an old man was sick of the king so he decided to release a rabid bear in the king’s castle, and you’re like “okay but I live in the castle too though?” and he’s like “Don’t worry, it won’t harm you.” Would you follow this man? No! Imagine knowing this old man who was involved in the murders of so many people, including your friends and family, in cold blood to achieve his godless world, and someone says “actually I don’t like the gods” and you’re like “oh damn, maybe this old man has a point.” Who cares if he has a point! He’s murdering entire villages of innocents! The ends don’t actually justify the means! I’m glad Orym and Ashton and Laudna are at least on board with that part, but I’m worried their resolve is weakening. Also I wish the god debate would just shut down when one of them points that out instead of continuing on.

I’ve been sitting on the intro duos in Bells Hells (baring Chetney because he was a solo intro and also Dorian because he is a separate case) and just thinking. Like in the case of the applebees solstice splits we can kind of see the dichotomy of the duos, Fearne and Orym, Fcg and Ashton, and Imogen and Laudna. In this essay I will…
[no but actually there is a mini essay it’s just kind of long so it’s under the cut :)]
Like obviously we all know that they each care for each other greatly, the intro duos in this party are incredibly attached to each other but when you think about it we can kind of see similarities in the parts of these duos. Namely having a person driven to protect the other because of their perceived inherent worth and the other being driven by a protective instinct due to isolation and loneliness and grief. Now I’m not saying that all these bitches aren’t codependent as fuck but I think there is a bit of a difference in the levels due to past events and personal histories.
Okay for example Imogen and Laudna, now both are heavily reliant on each other emotionally and physically (having been the only safety on the road with each other for years). Though I would argue that Imogen takes being separated from Laudna more poorly than Laudna does being separated from Imogen. One could argue the opposite but that not really what I’m focused on because this all connects to the rest of the duos. Laudna always has the utmost faith in Imogen and not to say that Imogen doesn’t feel the same in regards to Laudna but I feel like there is a difference because Laudna (as she has said) has already had the worst thing to happen to her happen. She doesn’t want to die but the fact is that she knows the feeling of dying and loss, of grief. Laudna is fiercely protective of Imogen because she thinks Imogen deserves better than what Laudna got because she is a good person and because she doesn’t want Imogen to have a life like she experienced. I would argue that Imogen leans on Laudna, not only because of the situations occurring in the campaign and their history, but in cases that they are separate she has lost the one person that is not a legitimate physical pain to be around. She is more vulnerable to the thing that she would rather not think about and she fall into the trap of catastrophizing events because she is unaware of the feeling of being only alone and left behind (I am aware of backstory showing that Imogen, Fcg, and Fearne were isolated or suffered with grief due to abilities or events but I think the differences in those cases are different than the case of Laudna, Ashton, and Orym) and having death or grief be the dripping driving motivation in her life, either consciously or subconsciously.
This is well documented in the other relationships as well, Ashton is incredibly protective of Fcg because they cannot let this broken but kind and sweet robot deal with the pain that they endured. However Fcg is incredibly attached to Ashton (especially in the beginning of the campaign) and dealing with their problem and making sure that Ashton stays alive because they believe that Ashton has more inherent worth because of their physical being. Fcg even though they have been left alone and has face murdering their friend and being alone, they actively has very few memories of those events. Ashton is driven by his loneliness and isolation whilst Fcg is driven to protect Ashton due perceived worth.
On the last pair Fearne and Orym it feels more cut and dry in terms of my argument. Fearne believes that Orym is kind and worthy of so much love because he has been irrevocably kind and giving to her. She is protective of him because of her perception of his worth (and I’m not saying anything negative about this I’m mostly just observing). Orym on the other hand has faced the grief of losing a loved ones to circumstance and misfortune and it is a core part of his character. The loss of these important people drives him to be incredibly protective of these new relationships and the connections the other has with outside relationships because he does not want to see what happened to him happen to the others and specifically Fearne.
In conclusion, all these duo have a common thread of one half being protective of the other due to their perception of the other person’s worth (which in this case is that they are incredibly deserving of a good happy life due to the past and the person that the other half of the duo is to the first half). Whilst the other half of the duo as a core part of their character has experienced grief and loneliness and death and so desperately wants to protect the other from experiencing what they have. This common connector between all these duos are reflected in other relationships throughout the group and with guest players and npcs but it is so interesting to me that it is a common thread in our intro duos.
Anyway that’s it bye 👋

Critical Role Double Life AU
So this would be the player characters and Essek in the world of Double Life (Minecraft Series)
The Pairings (randomized)
Beau & Tary - Daddy Issues
Veth & Ashton - Alcoholics
Fearne & Pike - Hot Girl Shit
Essek & Jester - Everyone has a Crush on Them
Grog & Caleb - Brains and Brawn
Fjord & Dorian - Shy Charisma Boys
FCG & Bertrand - Old Ass Man & Older Ass Robot
Laudna & Mollymauk - Back from the Dead
Vax & Imogen - Loves a Marisha
Percy & Yasha - Oh, So you have White Hair and Trauma?
Scanlan & Caduceus - All or Nothing
Vex & Orym - Keepers of the Brain Cell
Chetney & Keyleth - Animorphs
So same rules as double life, each couple has 3 lives and they share hp, last pair standing wins!
Beau and Tary take a minute to get along, but eventually they work together okay after bonding over their shitty dads. They spend quite a bit of time with Percy and Yasha. I think they would set up a thoroughly trapped base. I think they build a mansion and winery for their base and make a load of potions. They have an enchanting table for sure. Beau is very much the up close and personal fighter whereas Tary is a little more distant. He sends tnt minecarts and squishes people with anvils.
Veth and Ashton are both suspicious of each other at first, but they still get shit done. They get on better as they spend more time, realizing that at least the other won't stab them in the back. They make a bunker for a base, and stock it with booze, bolts, and fireworks. Veth traps the shit out of it. They are a terrifying combo in battle with Ashton up front and center taking hits and destroying people with his hammer and Veth picking off people from a distance with her crossbow. Veth does still spend a bit of time with Caleb on the side though.
Fearne and Pike get on fairly easily. They are both iconic and get shit done. Fearne loves to spy on everyone else and comes home with drama. She is also an arsonist and we love that for her. Pikey is more restrained in her chaos, but she is still out there causing problems. She sets off more traps than she would like to admit, but miraculously survives most of them. She is a bit better in combat than Fearne is but, they are both very good at surviving fights, even if they don't get the most kills. I think they build up a bakery and hide a bunker underneath it. They also just have several lava traps and fire pits around their home to defend it.
Essek and Jester already know each other and get on well. Together they build a beautiful tower, like the one in Tangled. It has several secret entrances and passageways. Jester seems like the type of person to have an army of tamed wolves. So she absolutely does, they all have special collars and are all named. They are both distance fighters as well so their towers works well to keep them out of harms way whilst they shoot arrows and throw fire charges as well as splash potions. Essek is a fancy lad and I fully believe that he has loads on end crystals and obsidian that he uses as his main weapon. Jester somehow got her hands on a trident (she stole it) and is wreaking havoc with that from the tower. Jester also keeps several bees just because she wants to.
Grog and Caleb get on okay at first, Grog is pretty friendly for the most part, but Caleb is wary of him. I think their base is a tower, but this tower has a bunker at the bottom that serves as a quick restock point for Grog since he is out on the battlefield with his axe wrecking shit. Caleb stays up in the tower mostly, shooting his fire charges, flame arrows, and pouring lava down the sides on the tower. Grog is very excited about all the traps that Caleb cooks up and happily uses his supply of end crystals whenever he can. They work well together.
Fjord and Dorian get on well, but is takes a minute for them to actually trust each other. Their base is a ship sat in the sky floating on clouds. These two are quite versatile in battle. They are good at both ranged and close combat. Fjord has several puffer-fish that he uses in close combat as well as his sword. Dorian uses his axe when in close combat. When at a distance they use their tridents and arrows. Fjord can be impulsive at times, but overall these two are some of the more peaceful members on the group. They don't have many traps set up, but they do have several alliances. They are allied with Beau, Tary, Essek, Jester, Orym, Vex, Caduceus, and Scanlan.
FCG and Bertrand get on alright, not the closest, but they do alright together. They do have the most accessible base out of everyone. It isn't trapped at all, but they are mostly left alone, well, their base is. Bertrand is a tricksy guy and manages to rile up many of the other folks. They don't dislike him, but they don't trust him either. FCG on the other hand is pretty well-liked and trusted. They are not the best in combat, but they seem to come out of it alive. Bertrand does know his way around a sword and FCG has an affinity for his crossbow.
Laudna and Mollymauk get on like a house on fire. They have the cutest home on the server. It is a cottage with a patchwork tent attached to the side. It is cozy and colorful. They have matching friendship bracelets that they made for each other and everything. They of course spend time with Imogen and Vax as well as Yasha and Percy. They spend quite a bit of time together as they wander the land together. If you spot one the other is likely somewhere nearby. As they get closer they swap stories about walking up from death. Molly is their close combat expert whereas Laudna is their sniper. Molly goes around with his swords and Laudna shoots from from far away with a bow.
Vax and Imogen are wary of each other at first, but eventually get on pretty well by the end. They share a house atop a hill where they have a pretty good view of several other people. Imogen has a stable of horses as well. They often ride into battle together, striking fast and retreating before people know what hit them. They often visit Vex and Orym, Keyleth and Chetney, as well as Laudna and Molly. Imogen is more of a distance fighter, but Vax is good either close up or at a distance.
Percy and Yasha eventually grow to trust each other but it starts out a bit rocky as they are both quiet around people they don't know or trust at first. They have a nice castle. Yasha has a beautiful garden and Percy has trapped the land around the castle thoroughly and has made several escape passages. He is already paranoid enough coming into this. Together they build makeshift graves to those they have lost after spending a lot of time together. Percy also makes a load of snipers perches around the map. Yasha goes with him and hides little caches of stuff by each hidden perch so that they are always ready for a fight wherever they are. She also stashes some food in his perches so that he doesn't run out of food. He often helps sharpen her blade and makes her a bunch of little things to help in battle.
Scanlan and Caduceus get on well enough. They respect each other. Caduceus is pretty calm and lives in a small cabin by Scanlan's mansion. Cad keeps a small mushroom garden and makes a load of potions that he shares with most anyone. They don't have any true enemies as they are just kind of vibing. There is usually music playing at their base. Scanlan gets a load of fire charges and end crystals from people just by asking. This man has a silver tongue and he knows how to use it. They don't have many traps, but the ones they have are weird and effective. They have several animals just roaming around their base. Scanlan is ruthless once the get into battle and so is Caduceus, after all, death and violence are very much parts of nature. They are oddly terrifying because of how fast they switch from being welcoming to just killing.
Vex and Orym get on pretty well. They work together extraordinarily well together. They make plans and stick to them. They are another ranged and close combat duo. They share a regular keep, nothing super fancy but it is nice and functional. They have several traps as is to be expected. They know what they're doing. They are good at using terrain to their advantage. Vex perches with her bow and Orym slips through battles causing damage as needed and catching hits on his shield. Vex keeps a few potions on her at all times just in case. They are prepared but not overly so and adapt as needed. Orym respects Vex and she is just happy to have someone who will actually follow the plans she makes, but will make ideas on the fly by himself as needed. They compliment each other, especially in battle.
Keyleth and Chetney take a minute to warm up but they get there, eventually. They have a base that is a huge oak and their basement is a hollow surrounded by roots. They are a bit worried about how flammable their base is as the days pass, but they store most of their better stuff under the earth anyways. They are an absolutely terrifying combo in combat. Chetney is always a wild card and an absolute menace, whereas Keyleth is terrryfying in her raw power and switch from being her more socially awkward, charming self, into a lean, mean, killing machine. These two often talk about their lengthened life spans what that means for Keyleth on top of Chetney's experiences. He gives her a bit of confidence she didn't have before and his rough edges have been softened a bit. They trust each other in battle completely. Sure Chetney will spy on people, dig tunnels under others bases, and steal from people, but he is her ally and they work well together.

The song “Color Him Father” on Orym’s exu playlist always puzzled me. It felt like something we hadn’t quite gotten to in Orym’s story but I couldn’t figure out in what way, especially since Liam wrote that “some of the specifics might be off here, but the sentiment of this song is right.” I had settled on the song reflecting Orym’s dad friend energy and general found family vibes.
But “He Did” by Anaïs Mitchell on Orym’s second playlist makes it clear that something is up with Orym and his father or maybe a father figure. Liam wrote “Following his footsteps.”
In exu Orym said “Didn’t really have a dad in life. I did have a dad but he just kind of rolled on. His name, last name, was Tarrintel.” The phrasing here is very unclear, who Orym’s father was. What exactly does “rolled on” mean here? Did his father leave or did he die?
“But you grew up straight and you grew up true He kept a blue-gray eye on you Until the day he closed his eyes and left them closed Your daddy didn't leave a will He left a shovel and a hole to fill.”
“Color Him Father” is about finding a father figure who isn’t your father by birth.
“I think I'll color this man father I think I'll color him love Said I'm gonna color him father I think I'll color the man love, yes I will”
With the context of “Color Him Father” I wonder if this father figure in Orym’s life could be Derrig. Liam wrote that “Orym and Will grew up together.” He also wrote that “by the time we sat down to play our Dalen’s Closet one shot with Vox Machina, Orym as you know him was already waiting in the wings,” implying that Derrig could have an important part in Orym’s story. Could this mean that Derrig was a father figure in Orym’s life from a young age? In this context could “He Did” be about Derrig. We don’t know if Derrig is still alive. Does Orym want to follow in Derrig’s footsteps? Does he want to follow in his father’s footsteps, and if so, what were those footsteps? Are these two songs about the same people? There is something in these two songs that I want to tease out.

Critical Role, Campaign 3 Episode 71
Yay, back to regular reacting times. Long may it continue ...
Blimey ... I'm with you Laura, that is an ... INTERESTING look for Ashley ... but NOT AS BAD as Sam's ... oh gods, now she's doing a French accent ... which I STILL better than Sam's ...
Ashley: "I'm French! It's my way!"
Wow ... this actually might be the best NordVPN ad for ages ...
Matt: "I think you almost killed Travis ..." Yeah ...
HOMELANDER in Mortal Kombat? Both cool AND disturbing ...
Matt: "Lady I'm married to, next to the horse!" Travis: "Yeah, horse lady!" Matt: "Yeah, this is getting quite disturbing, very Twin Peaks ... as much as I'd love to keep Sam in that outfit ..." Sam: "Oh God, it's so hot!"
YEAH!!! Bye bye, Ratanish, you big butthead!
Okay, so where are we? This IS the Shattered Teeth, right?
Perception check already? Go Liam ... Nat20!!! OF COURSE he does ... monkeys? Look at Ashley, already cute-grinning ... :3
Chetney: "There's an ocean, nearby! Intoxicating! We are truly lucky to be here!" Ashton: "Are you okay?"
Alright, seriously, what IS going on with Chetney? Is he tripping on funny psychotropic moss?
Laudna: "Are you an island boy? Do you operate on island time?" Hmmm ... am I missing an in-joke here?
Cliff! Watch it ...
This is INTENSE landscape ... very broody ...
Jirana the Shore Shrew ... cue loads of playing around with shudhing noises for THAT name ...
Imogen trying to send a Message to Jirana ... Matt: "Roll a D100 for me." Balls ... and 3 points of psychic damage! Ack ... oh, no, just 1 point ... not SO bad ...
Looking for the Great Tree of Atrophy? Hmmm ... but are they on the right tree? Probably not ... but Imogen still wants to go up and see ... so dhr grabs Orym to take with her, and Laudna sends Pate too ...
Liam: "Have I ever actually flown before?" Oh boy ...
I'm sorry, HOW high? Oof ... oh great, just an endless fog bank ... great ... Liam: "So ALL of the Shattered Teeth are obscured?" Crap ...
The shadow is MOVING ... oh that's not good ... yes, dive. DIVE DIVE DIVE!!!
Laura: "What if it's a nice Falkor? It's never a nice Falkor ..." No. No it's not.
Wow ... I love that ... Orym has INSANE good perception and a truly HORRIBLE sense of direction ... XD
Pick s direction ... FCG: "We can't just stand around with our metal dicks in our hands."
"Squishies in the middle!" Yup ...
Little feetsies ... LOL ... Matt: "I just wanted to say that so bad."
Fireflies? Ashton: "Remember the last time we thought some little glowing lights were cute?"
Oh no, Laudna, this is NOT the time for a swarm ... oh well, there she goes anyway ...
Pass Without A Trace! Here we go ... meanwhile Ashley's distracted making sure she doesn't smell like the horse suit ...
Tiny beating wings? Oh great ... not pixies again, please ...
An AMPHIBIOUS pixie? Weird shit ... that can't be good ...
Low growling and thuds from somewhere? Oh hell no ...
Trusting Fearne to know how to move through a place like this IS probably a smart play, actually.
Ashton: "I'm more scared of IT than I sm of you." Fearne: "Well that doesn't sound right." Ashton: "No, you ARE very scary."
Sending Pate out to scout ... Laudna: "And don't HIT ON the faeries."
Wow ... only TWO of this party have Darkvision ... great ...
Now they're looking for spiders? Hmmmm ...
A big fucking footprint ... 7 FEET LONG?!!! Seriously, Matthew?
Grim Psychometry! Okay ...
Oh, so they're on a BLOODY GAME TRAIL right now ... that's just LOVELY ...
And there's bits of broken canopy ... shit ...
Not many places to hide, clearly ... Imogen: "This place is bad!" Ashton: "Yeah, it's bad, everything's bad."
A makeshift camp, then ... and Fearne can make sn extra overgrown think to shelter them too? Okay ... "A little Bob Ross cabin". Nice. Sounds tight, but also quite cosy ...
Liam: "Is the rest of the show gonna be us just decorating?" XD
Night time but for them it still feels like early afternoon ... oof, timezones are EVIL ...
Chetney takes first watch ... so that whooshing sound KEEPS happening? Not a good sign ...
Laudna takes second watch, along with Pate ... "This is as low as I go, you didn't make me to he quiet." Yeah ...
Laura: "Okay, what if the creature IS the Shore Shrew?" Travis: "Okay, go to sleep."
And now they're being CHECKED OUT by the pixies ... wow, and these things are FUCKING UGLY up close ...
Liam: "I can imagine it walking right across your eye." Laura: "Like in Aeon Flux?" Oh yeah! XD
Extra watch? Then they can get a LONG rest ... so it's FCG with Pate helping.
Now there's a whole bloody HORDE of the fucking things surrounding them ... FCG tries to Talk With Animals ...
Laudna sleeps with her eyes open? Of course she does ... O.O
FCG seems to be making friends ... he tries to pickpocket his meat from him ... that didn't go well ... Chetney: "You're not supposed to be bartering with them!" FCG: "GO back to sleep." I can't believe that worked ...
Detect Thoughts? Hmmmm ... meanwhile Pussy II jokes ensue ...
One perches in his hand and HE CASTS TONGUES in it? AND IT WORKS?!!! Holy fuck ...
No name, just "me" ... hmmm ... "the Spray Cannon"? Okay ...
Oh, the "Smelly One" is some kind of creature ... oh, they decorate their bodies to mask their scents ...
Ah ... so the stuff is actually their SHIT ... of course ... they have to cover themselves with pixie shit ...
The island is uninhabited? Oh, there's Toriz? The Protector? Ummmmm ... what?
Big fire? FCG: "Oh, you guys are pyros?" Oh, so they WANT a big fire ... XD Yeah, I reckon they can accommodate that ...
Okay, so waking everybody up yo meet the new friends ...
Orym rolls over and IMMEDIATELY starts doing his morning push-ups ...
This is like now SUPREMELY bizarre ...
I love Me so much, I swear to the gods this thing is ADORABLE ...
Imogen tries to speak in its head ... "I'm in your head." Oh gods ...
Me: "You promised a fire." FCG: "Oh yeah, they like fire."
Imogen: "You're worried they're just gonna push us off a cliff?" Orym: "Oh ... well I WASN'T ..." XD
So they're APPROACHING the whooshing sound? Hmmmm ...
An old, long abandoned campsite? Interesting ... Grim Psychometry again ... oh shit, something NASTY happened here a long time ago ... oh, now that was just quietly TERRIFYING ...
Okay ... so it's time to make ... The Fire ...
Imogen: "Me, could EVERYONE poop on us? Oh, so gross ..." Me: "You want a rain from Me?" Hmmmm ...
Insight check on Me? Ooh, WHISPERS!!! Aaaaaaah ...
Fearne bamfs out Mister ... meanwhile they're discussing if they ACTUALLY want to get genuinely SHAT ON by these things ... it smells like lavender? Oh, so it's THAT MOSS that Chetney was chewing on earlier ... that explains a lot ...
Oh yeah, these guys really do LOVE fire ...
Me (to his friends): "The newcomers require a rain party." Oh. My. GODS ...
They are actually getting PELTED with this ... SHIT. Yeah ... Ashton: "Sometimes I think I should have just let that living room set kill you all."
Building a suitable bonfire ... oh yeah, OF COURSE Chetney knows what wood burns well.
All right, here we go ...
Ah, so this will be Laudna trying her Fire Magic under Fearne's guidance ... wow, nice job, girls! O.O ... oh yeah, they're just making a BIG shos of all this, and the pixies are just LOVING IT ...
Oh, here we go ... something's coming ...
A massive multi-legged komodo dragon that can change colours? Oh boy ... and it has NO EYES, just a FUCKLOAD of teeth ... with a big star on its nose? Like a MOLE?!!!
Stealth check ... Chetney rolls STUPID high ... znd it STILL attacks? Not good ...
Go to break? NOW?!!!
Shit, that's a NAT20?!!! Matt: "Why are you cheering?" 62 POINTS OF PIERCING DAMAGE to Chetney? Holy fuck ... znd it's time to ROLL INITIATIVE!!!
Battlemap! Yay!
Liam: "So Chetney just got COMPLETELY WRECKED?" Gods yes ...
Charge! Orym rushes the beast, using Seedling to pull himself right into its face! Bait and Switch on Chetney, nice! Protective Orym for the win!
Imogen Summons her Reiloran! Hex Mind? Okay ... using SPECIAL SORCERER MATHS she casts a long range attack on the beast! Zap! Psychic damage, bitch! Now the Reiloran delivers a Mind Spike znx deals EVEN MORE?!!! Oh, and then Mstt reminds her it can do MULTI-ATTACK so it does it AGAIN!!!
Chetney: "Oh my FUCKING GOD!!!" Casts Blood Curse of Bloated Agony and starts to crawl off ...
It tries to attack Orym and he fends it off TWICE ... third hits, though ... 22 points of slashing damage? Crap ...
It xan ONLY sense Orym? Hmmmm ... so the shit works, unless it's already engaged with them ...
FCG Compels it, but otherwise can't do much of anything until he can get to Chetney ...
Laudna Hexes the fucker! Yeah! Then she sends Pate in to attack ... but he can't make it either this round ... bugger ... 2 Eldritch Blasts, both hit! 14 and then 12 Damage! Nice!
Ashton Rages! Big ass rainbow charge! And he starts BARKING at it? That's wild ...
FIRE!!! Fearne tries to torch it ... oooh, damage maths ... 16! Nice! Mister goes too, poop shoot! Here we go ... bah, MISS!!! Nuts ...
"What about the power ... to move you?"
Wait ... what the fuck is THIS?!!! Something ELSE is coming? Is this about to get so much worse?
This changes Orym's plan somewhat ... flanking instead, slashes once, misses, Gain and HITS!!! Goading Attack! In the ARSE ... 16 points of damage and disadvantage against anyone else ...
Imogen LIGHTNING BOLTS the thing! Nice! Boom! 9 D6 of damage? Crazy ... 31 points of Lightning damage? Ouch ...
The Reiloran CRITS it ... 11 points of slashing damage ... Chetney: "Is that all? Eye flash and that's it?"
It attacks Orym ... miss ... then a HIT!!! Laudna casts Silvery Barbs! Nice save! Still hits a little, though ... crap ... it NEARLY BITES HIS ARM OFF?!!! Fuck, Matthew! Orym is REALLY HURT now ...
FCG gets as close as he can go Ofym and does a 3rd level Healing Word for 12 points ... that the best he can do right now ... and then all he can do is try and shoot it with the Bolt Thrower ... znd he MISSES!!! Travis: "Well at least you're consistent."
Laudna sends Pate to it and casts Shocking Grasp through him ... ZAP!!! Skittering? A great swarm of Stink Bugs? Infestation! Nice ... FCG: "It can't smell past the stink!" Yes, nice distraction!
Still Raging, Ashton Charles in, grabs Orym and carries him off ... stows him in a little hollow and then pops back up into the fight.
Fearne casts 3 Scorching Rays ... and NONE OF THEM HIT!!! Argh ... but at least Mister's "fiery turd gun" hits for 10 points of Fire damage.
Something big DROPS OUT OF THE SKY!!! Great ... boom ... and everybody gets blown back from the impact ...
Gigantic fucking demon frog beast ... like a FUCKING KAIJU ... its mouth glows from inside ... wait, there's a HOUSE inside this thing?
Whoa, giant beast face-off! Matt laments the fact he doesn't have a mini THIS BIG to put in and they immediately start ribbing him about it ...
Orym hacks and slashes, trying for another Goading Attack ... it works! Action Surge! Go tiny fighter!
Imogen tries to communicate with the giant frog ... oh, this thing might be friendly? Okay ... Imogen (out loud, to the group): "Take cover!"
Everybody who can just SCATTERS ... meanwhile the creature flees. Laudna tells Oare to build and he's very vocal about thinking her for the warning ...
The Mes are all swarming around the frog's head now ... it jumps on the lizard mole, squashes it, then just takes off with it and CHUCKS IT INTO THE OCEAN!!! Nice ...
Okay, the frog's back and SEEMS to be chill ... it opens its mouth ... and there REALLY IS like a kind of weird house inside this thing ... and there's somebody living inside it.
A galapa ... oh, a tortle? Cool ...
So this IS a friend of Keyleth's ... she's quite sweet, real. Hello Jirana. And the frog is Toriz. It's her home AND her friend, that's bizarrely adorable.
Fearne gives Toriz scritches. :3
Jirana IS aware of the major changes in the world. Oh, she's inviting them inside ... buy first douses Chetney with a bucketful of water for all the blood.
Bari Mondolo? So THAT'S what that thing was ...
The pixies are Dolabos? That's cute ...
The Cloud Jaws ... like a sky whale? Scary big thing ... and apparently IT IS dangerous, but only to airborne things. Okay, so not a MAJOR danger, then ...
The interior of the frog is surreal but also quite quaint and cosy.
Imogen uses Prestidigitation to clean them all off of the shit. Nice.
Jirana clearly collects stuff. Imogen gives her the Taste of Tal'dorei tankard. Awwww ... :3
She us an expert on grief and loss ... seems Keyleth sought her out? Oh yeah ... yeah, we know what THAT was about ...
There are 43 islands in the Shattered Teeth? Crazy ...
She's 400+ years old ... that's fucking crazy ...
Meanwhile there's some confusion over whether time passes different here or if she's just confused zbout that ...
Ashton reveals his Titan blood secret ...
Now asking about the Tree of Atrophy ...
Ooooooh ... Calamity fallout lore dump! Sweet ...
So you can just CHOOSE to become a tree ... okay ... wait ... is the Sun Tree like this? That would be interesting ...
Jirana: "The Tree is ... honest. Not everyone can handle this level of honesty." Hmmmm ...
So ... looking for a boat, then?
The islands REALLY DO move ... that's just GREAT ...
Oh my gods, I love the way Travis always completely loses it when Matt gives them a map. It's completely adorable every time. XD
Let Chetney repair a boat, guys. He's so stoked about this idea, just let him have this one.
Sam's flask is trying Matt's patience in the best way ... XD
Three big mountains ...
A "floater of danger"? Hmmmm ...
Yes, I agree, teleportation is NOT a smart idea right now. No, just TAKE A BOAT!!! Let Chetney mend a boat, guys ...
Ooh! Compass! Sweet ... the lost compass of the Dread Pirate Novos ... wait, is Matt SERIOUSLY evoking THE PRINCESS BRIDE right now?
A dark deal ... a GHOST SHIP?!!! Wait ... is this some U'kotoa shit?
There's a motorcycle outside, apparently ... Liam: "Grog's got gas." Travis (as Grog): "Sorry ..."
Chetney tries to get a read on the compass ... ooh, vision of a memory ... that's some crazy shit ... "Yep, it's a pirate ghost ship, and it'll be ... AWESOME."
Wow, they're actually seriously considering going for some kind of Davy Jones deal with the Dread Pirate ... O.O
TWO Titans died here ... Jirana has to look up their names ... Rau'shan and Ka'mort. Okay ...
Oooh, care package ... what kind of goodies are they getting? 2 reef moss balms, a bottle of slickshimmer oil, 2 brackish Potions (basically two greater healing potions) ... cool ... that's gonna be so helpful ...
FCG gives her fresh baked goods, and she's very appreciative.
Oh Letters, you're doing better at this than you think you are. Jirana does a really beautiful job of bucking him up ... apparently HE needs to talk to the tree too, and she's willing to help hom too if he ever makes it back this way ...
Man, this ancient tortoise woman is really something special ...
Chetney: "The wolf requires a high metabolism." Jirana: "THIS is for stamina." Wait ... did she just give him some homemade viagra? O.O
Fearne gives her salt and pepper shakers she got from the museum heist. Awwwww ...
She can TAKE THEM to the North Shore? Sweet ...
Oh yeah, clearly this us gonna be a serious wild ride ... I love that she's just a massive daredevil about this while the rest of them are deeply alarmed by the journey ...
Stepping out ... aha, the Shore is in sight. Here we go, then.
Ashton: "How do you grieve if you don't know what was taken from you?" Oh man ...
Jirana: "I am perpetually surrounded by broken things. They can always be mended in time."
Farewell to Jirana then, while the rest of them head to the shore. And that's it for tonight.
Yeah, Matt DID go all out on the Miyazaki vibe tonight, didn't he? I loved it ... :3

Note
So. I finally watched last Thursday`s episode. If youd rather just tell me to go look it up myself, I totally get it, but I dont get the Big Deal with Orym supposedly Going Dark?? Like. He is right. They ARE at war and its time that they put aside the Are the Prime Deities Good (they are, we as an audience have canonical proof of it through 2 main campaigns and Calamity) debate and get behind Ashton`s `The Ruby Vanguard is willing to kill anyone, and thats too dangerous to allow` mindset.
Hey anon!
So I can't speak for people who are saying this, since naturally I disagree, but my suspicions are that it's largely coming from people who were hoping for the campaign to more explicitly affirm their personal politics or ideals and are upset that a heroic fantasy D&D show set in a world with very different norms...continues to be set there, and the characters and stories carry out those norms. It's always been a problem, that some people do not like to acknowledge how different Exandria is from 21st century Earth not just in like, there's elves and magic, but in social mores, and this was a jarring reminder to them.
But I agree that this is Orym affirming Ashton's mindset. I also agree that while we have canonical proof from past works, it's best to craft an argument that doesn't rest of that. It does not matter that we know the prime deities' alignments or how they've acted towards past PCs or more generally whether you do or do not like the idea of a world with gods in it. You have one group who is preying on desperate people to the point that one of those people, when confronted but not injured by people who made him feel like he belonged, nearly killed one of them, and who has murdered and destroyed the minds of anyone in their way; and you have a group that is trying to stop them. Orym is just affirming that he is, absolutely part of the group trying to stop them.
Someone asked me last week what the point of the split was, and I said we couldn't really tell until it was over, but I think it served to show the human side of what had been this grand, overwhelming plan, and what the work might be, if Bells Hells can successfully stop them.
Team Wildemount did see more of the macro level - the destruction of Molaesmyr, the gods calling upon FCG and Deanna - but they also saw the survivors of Molaesmyr in Uthodurn, still morning the destruction of their home almost 300 years ago. We saw Umudara, who can't go home. We saw the infrastructure of Uthodurn break as enchantments failed. We saw clerics and followers of gods feeling terrified and lost. We saw people who were absolutely not involved in pain because of Ludinus and the Vanguard's actions.
Team Issylra, meanwhile, saw what kind of people might be drawn into the Vanguard and Ludinus's words - people dealing with oppression in the name of the gods, and people who have suffered faith-shattering tragedies. I think it's an important element of the story, since we've mostly dealt with high-level people (Otohan, Ludinus, Liliana) and only had a few tussles at the Malleus Key.
Essentially, this all served to say "gods aside, Ludinus, as head and founder of the Ruby Vanguard, is exploiting the oppressed instead of freeing them." Because do you know what would have happened had Hearthdell attacked Kiro on their own? This would have been a bloodbath, and a village would be wiped off the map, because some asshole with a magic microphone is entirely happy to use them up and discard them. What if Bor'Dor hadn't been recruited? What if he just got teleported as just a con man in the Cyrios Mountains, and he came across the party? Ludinus never actually stopped wearing that magic funnel, he just changed the methodology.
I think, similarly, the moment with the locket isn't "I shall become a killing machine." Remember how Ashton said the guy with the locket probably didn't have a family anymore? Orym is, in fact, in my opinion, looking at that, and at Bor'Dor, and saying "I'm not going to become this, despite my own losses and grief, and I'm going to stop it from happening to more people, and the path to that might be difficult and require some actions I wish I didn't have to do but which must be done." And I think Hearthdell shows that there will be work to be done if they stop Ludinus; that the next step is to make sure that worshipers of the gods truly do leave other people alone to live their lives in the places where they're genuinely overstepping and engaging in oppression.
My final thought is that there was a lot of discussion during these arcs that there be someone more unambiguously in favor of the gods, and with all of the above, I think that it worked out beautifully that there wasn't, and that we can stop focusing on the gods and start focusing on the people.

C3E67 reaction
What a fan-fucking-tastic episode!!!!!! I LOVED IT!!!
Though it started off poorly, with my pet peeve of Sam. STOP telling other players what their PCs are doing. And STOP metagaming to try to have people RP a scene that you want to see. Nothing Marisha RPed in the past episode indicated that she was 'glowing', and in the episode before it could very much have been read as excitement over a new dress. And just because you saw Laura and Marisha roleplay their PCs kissing, doesn't mean that FCG suddenly can tell.
*grumbles* Sorry, like I said, pet peeve. He's done it multiple times in C3 (to the point where players had to actively contradict him trying to tell them that their PCs were doing something or had something happen to him), he did it a bunch in C2, and while I can't remember, he probably did it in C1 too. And several times when he does it, he ends up completely changing the characterization that the player was RPing- ie Fearne confidently flirting with the were-panther, and then he tells her that she's blushing and nervous, completely the opposite of how Ashley was doing it. (he also does it later again in the episode implying that they slept together. seriously fuck off with this sam.)
(on the other hand, I cannot deny that Laura just absolutely losing her shit while Laudna was stuttering was hysterical)
Why am I not upset at Marisha for doing a very similar thing afterwards (forcing Taliesin to talk about backstory)? One, it was information that her PC knew, and two, it wasn't presented as a good or funny thing. It was a clear deflection, and very angrily done. It is perfectly reasonable to imagine Ashton calling her out later for doing so.
Honestly, everyone's opinion on the gods make sense for me EXCEPT for Orym. Iunno, maybe Keyleth's attitude rubbed off on him during his training, and that influences the fact that he's had several positive interactions with gods and makes it more neutral?
Let me be very very clear. All the jokes about the flower names? 10000 percent worth it for the 25ish temp HP that the boss got at the end. Some of these were SO clever! Plus, Matt's exasperated face is always fun XD
Three nat 1s for stealth!! I cannot remember the last time that this happened, unless it was Travis with the three nat 1s for Fjord at the festival way back at the beginning of C2. DELICIOUS!
The combat was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! I do kinda wish I could see two different versions, one where Fearne's persuasion failed, and one where the enemies actually rolled decent. Because the group was freaking out a lot, but I'm actually gonna go back and do calculations, 'cause I'm pretty sure most of them were really good on HP? Like, I genuinely think only Imogen was in true danger.
Okay, before the short rest from last episode/start of this one - Fearne was at 16 HP, Ashton at 88, Orym at 79, Laudna around 72 depending on temp HP gain, Chetney 82, FCG 19, and Imogen at full. Unknown how much healing with short rest.
After the short rest, Fearne took no damage in her regular form, Ashton only took 16 points, Orym only took 22, Chetney took 14, FCG took 19, and Laudna took none. Imogen went down and was brought back to 4 HP.
So.....Yeah, I don't get why they were freaking out so hard, when basically all of them had a bunch of HP. (I also don't get why Tal tends not to tank despite having the best HP and having rage damage reduction.) Ah well. Still entertaining! Plus seeing them freak out is always fun, even if at times confusing.
Travis and cursed swords, what is a better pairing?
ASHLEY. FEARNE. BOTH OF YOU. WHAT ARE YOU DOING, THIS IS AMAZING, I LOVE THIS AND CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THE FALLOUT OMG (also you totally should have just propositioned him right then and there! XD)

Spoilers for C3E29!
Go back ye, who have not watched!
That was a doozy of an episode.
Might do a delve into Ruidus more tomorrow, spitting out possible theories about its origin and stance cause…it’s a muddled mess of curiosity.
Fearne and Imogen are both Ruidusborn, but Imogen is from a “bloodline” of those touched by the Moon, fitting into her sorcerous abilities.
Furthermore there appears to be a pretty clear explanation for why Fearne is missing so much time. Morri…might legitimately be the Morrighan, or at least the Exandria version of her. An Archfey, who manipulated time, maybe for selfish reasons, maybe to give Fearne a chance to grow up, we can’t be sure.
And while Birdie doesn’t believe it we know that the Seelie Court has been looking for Fearne prior yo learning of the Unseelie’s intentions…so things might be almost as complicated as Yu made it out to be.
The Moon has the ability to force its way into other planes following its Ruidusborn. Which….had a lot of implications.
The Unseelie Fey are in league with the Gray Assassins, towards some unknown end involving Ruidus. They’ve murdered members of the Grim Verity, may have been tied up in the Apex War, and are also behind the attack on Orym’s home….which raises a lot of questions about that slippery, gaslighting snake of a Changeling Yu….
Otahan, is one of the big mortal players, but who is the Elf I wonder. Are the Ivory Syndicate involved?
Another interesting thread, Treshi is beholden to the Paragon’s Call, who are working for one of Ruidus’s possible “minions”/ the ongoing conspiracy but was also partner with Ira…who is working with those that are against what ever possible Doomsday might be on-coming. He also built weapons for the Apex War…so does he know Otohan, one of the legends of that conflict? A Master Engineer and a Master Strategist, there had to have been some overlap.
What is going to go down with him next is going to be intriguing.
As for Yu…I’d honestly have freed their head from the neck, but my blood runs hot and I don’t trust known lying schemers, not matter how sweet they talk at me. Speaking of, why did they use a Half-Elven form to taunt Orym when flirting and how did they know about the Gnarlstone to tempt Imogen?? How long have they been talking them?
To the meatiest bit of new info….there are forgotten gods. Two Gods vanished from the Pantheon, their fate hidden away but why? What happened to them! How does it tie into Ruidus? What were their identities? Their domains? Did they die??
Some have mentioned that one could be the God of Death prior to the Raven Queen but I don’t think that tracks because people know they existed. Their name is gone, their memory whittled down to the barest of bones, but they are still a known factor. These other two do not appear to be. They aren’t remembered as being part of the Pantheon….so who were they? God I want to know.
One last thing of note: 7 Years ago Fearne Calloway was born under a suddenly active Ruidus.
Ruidus began ramping up activity from there.
7 Years ago, Cognouza, a being of psychic might, prophetic dreams, and physical transformation tied to the gaze of unwavering red eyes died.
Side note: Ashton calling a Changelings “basic” might be one of my favorite lines of this campaign so far.
And what is Ruidus, but an eerie eye in the sky staring down upon its disparate “family” and watching their fates unwind.

cr c3e25 imogen meta
of course i was going to write this, because it's been a MONTH in the making and we GOT WHAT WE CAME FOR FRIENDS it's my favorite genre called IMOGEN ANGST!!!
topics: imogen, fearne, ollie and birdie | imogen and orym + a little laudna and fcg | laudna's message to dusk |
messaging birdie
although the thing The Shippers are talking about is the conversations surrounding the imodna angst, one of the most interesting aspects of this episode to me was how fearne's backstory ties, more than i thought it would, into imogen.
preface: i did not watch the OG exu, so i'm approaching knowledge of fearne like any of the other non-exu c3 characters.
firstly: imogen's reaction to fearne, being split up from her parents- fearne, saying that she was very young when they left, that they had something important to do and they didn't come back, fearne, spending most of her life not knowing where her parents are, and then suddenly finding a tie to them in the middle of something unexpected-
sounds familiar, dosen't it? to how imogen has no memories of liliana, how she finds her mother's name written in a list of contributors, blindsided by the idea that her mother hadn't died when she thought that she did, or that she was doing something that imogen hadn't even thought of- how, when she sees her mother, will she even know who she is?
fearne is getting a reunion she never thought she would have. and for imogen, it's exciting but it's also heartbreaking.
now, onto the messaging itself: i had talked before about the burden of mind reading, and that issue is ever-more relevant now that imogen has actively become the messenger for something that carried such personal weight.
there was that moment, before birdie responded, that imogen was probably thinking- what if they don't answer? what if i fail? how do i know if i failed, because they're dead, or i failed, because they don't want to see fearne? who am i, to do this? and if i say the wrong thing, what if
and thank goodness it works, because if imogen hadn't been able to help fearne, it would just be another indicator of her failure, to help her friends, another decision that she made that ended up with someone getting hurt.
and yet, there's a deep longing in her words, that she sends to birdie, and a deep sadness there, too, for what she's lost, for the reunions that she may or may not have.
imogen says to orym something along the lines of "i hope it's a happy reunion."
what kind of reunion does she expect with her father? and when she meeets liliana, will that be truly happy, either, knowing the last time she saw a trace of her mother was in a study about the thing of imogen's nightmares?
the parallels are so interesting between fearne and imogen. because they are two very different people- but looking into it, they are cut from the same, devastating cloth.
imogen and orym
imogen's conversation with orym was also heartbreaking. like fcg mentioned- she's been through so much, in the past days and weeks, and when they listed her struggles out like that, it's not hard to see why she carried so much heaviness with her, despite doing something amazing for fearne.
admitting that it's a good thing, the incident between her and laudna- i don't think she meant the broken trust. i think it tears her apart, that aspect of it. i think she knows, though, deep down that that rock was never something good, and she knows she never could have gotten rid of it by herself.
but it's hard to admit that. it's hard to admit you had an attachment- an addiction, really- and hard to admit that you put more of your self-worth into it than you should have. it's hard to admit you prioritized the wrong side of what i'll call The Incident.
because she did focus on the rock, when laudna broke it. she didn't acknowledge the terror in her best friend's eyes when delilah took control of her body- and imogen can't help but wonder if she's the worse friend, for that.
she certainly feels shitty- about everything.
imogen watches laudna and dusk, and the easy friendship between them, and can't help but wonder if, in pulling away from laudna after the rock broke, that she'd severed a bond that laudna didn't want to fix.
in pushing laudna away, for this incident, had she pushed her away for good? had laudna decided, that after all that imogen hurt her, that the nightmares and the migraines and the anxiety that she wasn't worth it?
maybe i'm pushing the meta a little too far... but we'll see...
laudna and fcg
now, i'm not going to go as in-depth (because this is an imogen centric meta) about laudna's conversation with fcg but it revealed so much? and i continue to be impressed with how accurate fanfic characterizations of laudna often are.
because laudna has said now, that she wants to give imogen the chance to have an unburdened, carefree youth. a youth that for her, was plagued by the briarwoods after and even before her death.
so yes, she talked almost entirely about The Incident through the lens of needing to do these things For Imogen, but it's very telling that in her determination to fix things, For Imogen, to find answers, For Imogen, that it's really about Laudna, and not facing what she's lost. It's about Laudna, desperately striving to do this For Imogen, because this is something she can control, this is something she can help, and she can't help the fact that she was hung from a tree.
the whole imogen and laudna dynamic really boils down to control, now that i think about it- and not in a kinky or aggressive way. it's about finding control over your own life, taking the reins, learning to wield responsibility over power and responsibility over relationships.
ugh. i love their bond (romance, friendship, queer platonic relationship, whatever it becomes) because it's so complex.
the whole dusk affair
can i just say that dusk came in at a PERFECT time? obviously matt couldn't have planned specifically for a guest star to come in at one of the most tumultuous (haha) times in regard to in-party conflict, but it's so perfect.
because here is a character that imogen doesn't know that swoops in and becomes a bright spot for laudna, a person that takes heaviness that's been sitting over her shoulders and lifts it away, so effortlessly, so easily, in a way that imogen hasn't been able to do for days.
here is a character, who wears their secrets and heart and everything on their sleeve, who trusts the party wholeheartedly with their past (which is partially a role of a guest star- to push a certain narrative) but still.
dusk is so, so different from imogen. they're free, in a strange way for someone so lost, and they click so easily with laudna that's terrifying to imogen.
is she losing laudna?
for so long, imogen has kept her walls up. she can't afford to let them down, even for a moment. living in a constant barrage has made her defensive, maybe prematurely, of everything around her because if she lets anyone in oh god how will she ever live with herself if they see her pain and turn away-
and maybe, she's starting to wonder, if keeping up her walls and shutting everything out will be her downfall.
but she's terrified, because if she lets her guard down, and lets people in- laudna, orym, fearne, anyone- she's scared she'll lose herself, in whatever she's becoming.
i'll say it again- i love imogen as a character. i think she has such depth to her, in a way that no cr character has had before, and in part it's because of her powers. they add this extra layer- because for all imogen can read people's thoughts, she keeps hers close to her chest, because she's seen the worst of the world and she doesn't know if she can let herself be hurt like that.
