a series of fics in which Obi Wan Kenobi having a disability somehow saves the galaxy
behold, my magnum opus
#1. Iviin’hiibi te Tuur- 16k, 11 chapters, complete (+ongoing bonus works)
Obi Wan has never resented the seizures he's experienced, not exactly, but he wasn't particularly fond of them either.
(And then they save the galaxy.)
#2. Uja Nejah - 34k, 28 chapters, complete
Obi Wan was diagnosed with diabetes a few months after his return from Melida/Daan. The Healers assured him it would only have minor impacts on his life and wouldn't change much for him. It does, but it somehow works out all the better in the end because of it.
#3. Gev’or’dayc O’r - 62k, 30 chapters, complete
After an attempt on Obi Wan’s life leaves him in a precarious state, and the clones concerned about the person trying to finish the job, they make a significant decision that involves the entirety of the 212th faking their deaths, disappearing into wild space, and working tirelessly to help their General get better. While Anakin and Ahsoka are investigating the attempted assassination, Obi Wan has to come to terms with the possibility he might not get better from this, and what his life will look like if that’s the case.
#4. Mirsh’prudiise - 45k, 19 chapters, complete
Obi Wan is diagnosed with psychosis after Melida/Daan.
When he returned, he was cracked, portions of him split from other pieces, reflected in mirrors, distant. There were other things in him, when he got back. Things that were not him, that he now had to carry around, weighing on him heavily.
#5. Nor’taakur be Beskar - 47k, 23 chapters, complete
Months before the clones are discovered, before the outbreak of war, before Geonosis and everything that occurs therein, Obi Wan is seriously injured in a speeder crash. He still finds his way to the front lines and the galaxy is better for it.
#6. Urakto Videkir - 2.5k, 1 chapter, complete (future work forthcoming)
Obi Wan realizes he's quite forgotten to tell the troopers he doesn't eat by mouth. Surely this will not come back to haunt him later (said no one ever).
#7. The only thing strong enough to kick my ass is me - 5k, 1 chapter, complete (likely to be future works)
Obi Wan assumed the joint paint was part of getting older, of using his saber for endless hours while fighting a war in exhausting conditions. He certainly didn't think there was anything else going on.
#8. Cinar’tal Or’baar - 9k, 2 chapters, complete
An unexpected complication throws a wrench into the chronic illness Obi Wan has been coping with for years. Further complications arise, naturally, because nothing in his life can be easy.
#9. Irud bal Motuun - 5.5k, 3/26 chapters, WIP
When Anakin abandoned Obi Wan on Geonosis, leaving him to to fight Dooku on his own, both he and the galaxy are forever changed.
Based on the excellent art of @charrhylis

Disabilities exist in Star Wars. Period.
This post is dedicated to certain specific people who say they are not be able to reconcile service animals in Star Wars, especially Jedi, since the Force and technology exist. These people seemingly have never seen Star Wars, where disabilities not only exist but feature prominently in many cases — yes, even in Jedi. So let us prove them definitively wrong here.
From the very beginning, disabilities have existed in Star Wars. In fact, one could argue a feature of a disability is one of the most iconic things about Star Wars. Even people who aren't Star Wars fans, or who haven't seen the movies at all, know the sound of Darth Vader's breathing. Darth Vader -- Anakin Skywalker -- is unable to breathe on his own and needs to be constantly hooked up to a life-support system simply to stay alive. This in itself is an answer to the argument that the Force compensates for everything. Perhaps you might want to say it is the Force that lets him stay alive beyond what would kill someone else, but still it cannot take the place of functional lungs, or grow back missing limbs, etc. Anakin Skywalker is one of the most powerful Force-sensitives to have ever lived, and yet he can still be disabled and need assistance. (Also, because sometimes I see people making the argument that because of all the pain that Anakin is in, he should be forgiven for his actions, let me say this: Anakin Skywalker can be disabled and still be villainous and make choices that hurt untold billions of people. Being disabled does not absolve you of your bad decisions. Disabled people are people too, and all people make choices and that is what determines the kind of person they are. But that's another post.)
Another example of the Force not compensating for everything is Yoda. We see Yoda using mobility aids multiple times throughout the OT and the PT, from a cane to a hoverchair. He is known as one of the wisest and most powerful Jedi ever, and yet he still uses mobility aids. "Yeah, well," you say, "he still fights with his lightsaber and does all those flips, so that doesn't count." This is the same stupid argument that people make against ambulatory wheelchair users. Needing to use a mobility aid does not mean you need to use it all the time. Total paralysis is not the only thing that makes people need to use wheelchairs or similar mobility aids. Often, people are technically capable of walking or moving around or even fighting and doing backflips in Yoda’s case, but the amount of pain and decreased function that such actions would cause are not worth it except for short amounts of time or in dire circumstances. This does not make them less disabled, or mean that they are faking it.
“Must be a Jedi thing,” you say. What about Chirrut Îmwe or Kanan Jarrus, who are both blind (or become so). The Force does not give them their sight back (aside from a certain final scene in Rebels). “It’s only for Force-sensitives, then,” you try next. Try looking at Saw Gerrera, who needs oxygen assistance and wears a pressurized suit over his body. Or how about 99, a disabled clone who helps in brothers and is commended as “a true soldier” upon his death? The clones are excellent examples, for that matter. Wolffe is missing an eye, Gregor has a traumatic brain injury, Echo uses extensive cybernetics to function, among many others.
Maybe still you want to argue that sure, someone might have a limb chopped off or whatever, but technology has come so far in Star Wars that they're not really disabled. Hear me now when I say: having accommodations that help you function in everyday life does not erase a disability. Go back and read that a few times if you need to, because it’s important.
Now, to be clear, I’m not at all saying Star Wars always has amazing disability representation. I know that’s not the case in many, many regards, and I will link below references that discuss it in more detail. But to say that something like a service animal does not belong in Star Wars is, frankly, extremely idiotic and ableist and ignores the long history of disability in the GFFA. Disabled people have always existed in Star Wars and other sci-fi/fantasy media and they always will.

Disability Pride flag + Star Wars
Image description: 7 panels toned in the colours of the disability pride flag, with text indicating their meanings, with backdrops of Disabled characters in Star Wars.
1: A black-toned panel that says "BLACK" and "commemoration + mourning". The pictures are of a community carrying out a funeral march for Maarva Andor, a Disabled leader and organiser, Hera Syndulla mourning Kanan Jarrus, her Blind spouse, and Poe Dameron mourning Leia Organa, a Disabled woman and leader.
2: A green-toned panel that says "GREEN" and "sensory disabilities". The pictures are of Kanan Jarrus and Chirrut Îmwe, both Blind people.
3: A blue-toned panel that says "BLUE" and "emotional + psychiatric disabilities". The pictures are of Obi-wan Kenobi and Reva Sevander, who both have mental health disabilities that include flashbacks, and of Leia Organa, whose actress was bipolar, and who described herself and Leia as being so similar it was hard to tell where one ended and the other began.
4: A gold-toned panel that says "GOLD" and "neurodiversity". The pictures are of Theron Shan, who has a different neurotype to the one he was expected to at birth, Hardcase, who has hyperactivity, and Yoda (who is also a mobility aid user) and Jedi younglings, who all have a different neurotype (Force-sensitivity) from the norm. In the picture of Yoda and the younglings, he is talking about how he values how their minds work differently from other peoples'.
5: A red-toned panel that says "RED" and "physical disabilities". The pictures are of Saw Gerrera, an amputee who uses supplementary oxygen and a staff as a mobility aid, Weazel, who has dwarfism, Luke Skywalker, an amputee, and Lando Calrissian, a cane user.
6: A white-toned panel that says "WHITE" and "invisible + undiagnosed [disabilities]". The pictures are of Finn, who was unaware of his neurodivergence for the first decades of his life, Cere Junda, who has trauma, and Greez Dritus, who has an addiction.
7: A black-toned panel that says "BLACK" and "rage, protest + rebellion". The pictures are of Chirrut Îmwe and Kanan Jarrus fighting in the Rebellion against the Galactic Empire, Reva Sevandar fighting against one of its enforcers, screaming in rage at somebody who traumatised her, Maarva Andor giving a posthumous speech encouraging rebellion, and Leia Organa giving orders to Rebellion fighters who are about to engage the Empire. /End.

okay okay okay.
So the truth about Anakin is that everything around him shapes him into who he is. That’s true of every person. His decisions are made based on what he thinks to be true, and what he thinks to be true is heavily influenced by Palpatine. And what isn’t influenced by Palps is directly manipulated into him. And he is likewise influenced by Obi-Wan and Padme and his past.
His choices and decisions, being based on all of these things, could easily have gone wholly different had his sphere of life been changed even in little ways. If he had talked less to Palps. If he had opened more to Obi-Wan. If Padme hadn’t been away for ten whole years. If his mother had been freed. If… well, you get the picture.
And that’s very interesting. Because, again. This is true for all of us. Little things truly do make us.
Anyway all this to say I want some small thing to change the whole story of Star Wars for a fun Anakin Is Not As Fucked Up (But Still Pretty Fucked) AU.

Pals I'm trying to untangle the weirdly specific disability mixed-feels I have (layered in with all the broader metatextual feelings) about an immobilized Vader screaming for Obi-Wan not to leave him behind for the second time in his life but I seriously don't know if I can parse it myself, let alone put it into words.
Idk. There's a lot in Star Wars that gives me mixed disability feels but these are some of the mixed-est.
Did anyone else have Thoughts about wtf it means that his cybernetics are busted in that moment, that his side of their relationship is still 110% unhealthy and codependent except for one very extreme exception, that we know for sure he'd get up and follow Obi-Wan if he could, etc? Like idk it's turning my brain into heart stew.

will this make sense without context? maybe not, but that just means you should read the proof is in the pudding by @star-byrd. In it Obi-Wan has an ostomy, Fox has an ng tube, shenanigans occur as well. a good time.

Volatile Opinion:
All you fanfic writers/fan work artists that employ Canon divergence so that Anakin never gets mutilated and burned or write some sort of plot where the force heals his body prior to any romantic development in the story: COWARDS THE LOT OF YE. This applies to a whole slew of other characters. Yall all vocal about seeing media representation with canonically disabled characters, or how non-able bodied people are equally deserving of love an intimacy,,, how about you practice what you preach? It seems that the moment anything above a decorative eye scar or some tragically beautiful body scarring presents itself it is to be scurried away from.
Now, im aware that people have different tastes, preferences, and attractions, and thats alright! Thats human! But it feels insulting to see such a volume of fans "beautify" and disability-retcon certain characters before them being good enough to be seen as romancible in their stories/art/fanworks.
Not shaming people for their tastes, just asking for more open mindedness and consideration with the way they interact with disabled/scarred characters. Let's all try to expand our toleraces and the way we see people that are different from ourselves.

I am back in my ‘Rebels teaching me how to hope’ and ‘Obi-Wan showing me how to endure the universe’ Era and frankly the stories are still fantastic, and the ableism and chronic pain still need to share the fate of the two death stars.
