what a lovely day to post about disabled richie tozier (cw: description of tics and stims!)
after the fall out of the deadlights, he severely fucks up his knees and ankles
the adrenaline keeps him going until they get out of neibolt at which point he just collapses
he leaves the hospital with knee braces and crutches and it’s a little scary at first
he’s never had any issues with walking other than then general getting-old charlie horses when he stretches the wrong way, so suddenly needing multiple aids is jarring
but eddie’s in a wheelchair now because of his spinal cord injury, so at least they can commiserate
after a few months, richie’s able to walk slowly just using the braces, but every step hurts
the under-arm crutches also sucked, though, so he finds himself using forearm crutches for anything more than walking around the house
and sometimes even then
he’s not off balance, he can stand on his own, but sometimes he wishes he had the chair because standing for too long in one place hurts, too
he’s mostly neutral about his aids but he does love helping eddie decorate his wheelchair bc he knows it’s been a huge adjustment
he slapped an old tour sticker on the back at one point and even though eddie pretends to hate it they both know it’s one of his favorites
richie’s known he’s autistic for a long time
he has some other tic disorder but he’s never looked too much into it or been diagnosed because it hasn’t been severe enough for doctors to care or recognize it as more than his normal stimming
and he doesn’t particularly care either—it’s just another part of him and getting an official diagnosis won’t actually do anything for him
he used to rock back and forth on his toes and bounce his leg a lot but that got a lot more painful after derry 2.0 so he’s had to adapt
he finds himself shaking his hands a lot more, and he still rocks when he’s sitting down
he chews on straws so much that eddie finally gets him one of those silicone ones and richie’s elated
he bites through it in a week
his tics mainly come out more when he’s stressed or intoxicated; they tend to lean more physical when stressed and verbal when he’s drunk or high and he doesn’t know why
his head/neck jerks so hard he strains muscles and he’s hit his chest with enough force to bruise before but he doesn’t try to avoid them because he knows it’ll only make it worse
when he’s drunk he does a lot of humming and whistling—he can perfectly mimic the tweet whistle/ringtone
he actually doesn’t have coprolalia, although he will absolutely blame his lack of filter on his tics if needed
the man did not know what ableism was until derry but now he calls the losers out all the time as a joke
he had a meltdown when mike called him
he spends so much of his time masking around other people that it was hard for him to drop it and he has meltdowns more frequently than he really should as a result
he’s finally started to relax around the losers like he used to, but some days he puts the wrong clothes on and he made the last of the cinnamon raisin toast last night when he got the munchies and there are too many dishes in the sink and when he tries to wash them the water gets inside of the gloves and everything’s just itch itch wet wrong bad and eddie finds him curled in a ball on the floor of the kitchen
when this happens, eddie makes sure richie has his phone so he can text if he wants and he gets the cinnamon raisin bread delivered and has richie change into comfier clothes when he’s ready to move and then they go watch a movie with richie’s head in eddie’s lap and everything is always loud loud loud in richie’s head but for a few minutes, at least, it’s quiet

I'm stuck between two ideas because i saw THIS post so now i have two fic ideas
Eddie ends up in a wheelchair and ends up back with Moira but he can see how controlling and not healthy his marriage is now so he makes the mistake of calling Richie for help. It’s only a mistake because Richie is not... the best at making plans. But he tries. And when i say try i mean he wrangles all the losers together to get Eddie away from Moira. (Bill: is this a kidnapping? We're planning a kidnapping? Richie: it is ...a rescue mission. And if you are gonna bring this kind of negativity you can just stay home! Bill: okay but i just wanna be clear that this is very much a kidnapping. Richie: oH MY GOD! bev talk to him!")
And two. Eddie leaves Moira himself. He still has a wheelchair. And he goes to see Richie. The front of the building isn't accessible for wheelchairs but the doorman helps him. There's also an emergency lift in the building that he helps Eddie onto. So Eddie shows up at Richie's door. Acting as normal as you please and Richie, who has no idea there's an emergency elevator in the building stares at him for a very long time, eyes narrowing as he looks around the hall for someone who could have helped Eddie. And then looks back to Eddie and just whispers, confused as fuck, "how did you get up the stairs?" And Eddie is like "WELL LET ME TELL YOU ASSHOLE IT WAS NO EASY FEAT!"

"Sorry I'm late," Richie says, appearing like a meerkat out of a desert hole at Steve's elbow, breathless, windswept, and pink-cheeked. "I had to pick up my friend at the airport, last minute, traffic, et cetera."
"Don't fucking say 'et cetera' out loud with your mouth," Steve mutters, lip curling in pseudo-disgust. Richie laughs gently (something new, that Steve hasn't gotten used to yet). "This the friend you screwed me and shat your tour for?"
"The one who almost died," Richie corrects, mild. "Yeah." (That's not new, but Steve had never had Richie use it on him until this clusterfuck of a year. He's relieved to get attitude, though; it's good to see Richie actually fucking utilizing the backbone he's always had.)
"You couldn't-"
"No," Richie cuts Steve off before he can even ask what Richie couldn't do. Get someone else to pick this 'friend' up, or leave her waiting for a god damn moment and pick her up after, in the name of his career.
"Well, at least I'll finally get to meet the apparent love of your fucking life," Steve grumbles. Richie looks caught out, but Steve just gives him a look. The two of them know each other pretty well by now, secret tragic backstory aside, and Richie should have known that Steve would catch on to that after all this fucking hubbub.
Richie takes a breath to add something else. His eyes stay steady on Steve's (good for him), but he buries his hands deep in his pockets and rounds out his shoulders and- Jeezus fuck, this woman better not be married or-
"I thought you said I made you late, asshole," says a handsome man about Richie's age and Steve's height, his pinstriped shirt and fitted grey slacks looking rumpled. "You're just fucking standing here." He struggles for a moment to open the bottle of cranberry juice he must've been buying at the vending machine around the corner before handing it over to Richie. Richie takes it, opens it, hands it back, all the while maintaining a resigned eye contact with Steve. He doesn't issue a correction.
"Uh," says the apparent love of Richie's life when the silence and the staring contest stretch. "Apologies for interrupting."
"You didn't interrupt," Steve assures, finally looking to him. He holds out a hand for the man to shake, and then switches when he offers back the non-corresponding hand. "Steve Covall, Richie's manager."
"Kaspbrak," Leftie introduces, shaking firmly.
"Kaspbrak," Richie repeats, his Connery... passable. "Edward Kaspbrak."
"Workshop it," Kaspbrak quips immediately. "Doesn't scan."
Steve smiles, nods to himself. Yeah. That seems right.
"My office is the first door on the left from the vending machine," Steve tells Kaspbrak. "There's a couch in there, magazines, some port if you're interested. Richie very much is late." Kaspbrak merely nods, checks Richie in the side with his elbow, and meanders back the way he came as directed. Steve raises an eyebrow at Richie as Kaspbrak's well-dressed back disappears from view. Richie gives him a nervous, self-deprecating grin.
"Well," Steve says. "That certainly explains the rebranding decision." Richie laughs, a pitchy relieved thing this time, his shoulders visibly dropping back down into his usual slouch. "C'mon, they're waiting."

I'm having thoughts about how when people say they want Eddie to be a disabled character, they mean they want him to have a physical disability. Something easy to see, something that can almost be a badge of honor, like he's a war hero who lost an arm saving Richie.
But Eddie is already a disabled character, it's just that his disability isn't obvious. He has trauma, PTSD, chronic anxiety that gives him panic attacks. He's disabled before the final fight with Pennywise. He would be disabled in a world without Pennywise because Sonia Kaspbrak would still be there.

Post IT Chapter 2, With Some Adjustments
Since Eddie and Myra are still legally married, Myra gets Eddie's disability benefits due to Eddie now being on a wheelchair (spinal injury). Eddie's in the process of setting up divorce papers.
Myra freaks out when Eddie shows her the paperwork. She tries to say he can't live without her, to which Eddie responds, "There's someone else, Myra. That's why I'm leaving. Also, I'm gay."

thinking about the intimacy of disabled reddie after derry 2.0
cw: internalized ableism, accidental self harm (via tics)
eddie has really bad imposter syndrome when it comes to his symptoms because he finally came to terms with the fact that his childhood illnesses were fake and so he gets in his head about it a lot
it doesn’t help that he gets phantom pains even though he can’t feel his legs anymore so it freaks him out a lot
but richie’s always there for him to vent or talk about his fears with and he always seems to know exactly what to say to calm eddie down, reminding him that it’s okay to need a wheelchair now and for richie to help him with certain tasks and that it doesn’t make him weak
richie really tries to balance helping eddie with things and not being overbearing so he does worry sometimes but they learn to communicate more openly so that there’s no built up resentment or anxieties on either of their ends
richie gets tic attacks where he hits himself repeatedly and his neck jerks and he tenses up and can’t stop it or unlock himself and he can’t get any words out because he’s just humming every second and eddie doesn’t try to stop him because he knows it won’t do anything but he strokes richie’s hair and distracts him with stories of his last outing with bev or the phone call he had with stan and it helps richie to have something else to focus on
and after it’s over eddie will massage the knots out of richie’s neck and shoulders and rub icyhot into his skin (their house is always stocked) and he lets richie lay on the couch with his head in eddie’s lap so he can rest
when it’s rainy richie’s joint pain tends to be worse so they typically don’t go out much those days, they stay in and order takeout and watch silly movies and eddie will massage his feet even though he hates feet because he knows it helps for when richie stands back up even with his crutches
richie ties eddie’s shoes for him every morning. eddie has an album that’s just richie in different positions tying his shoes. kneeling down, laying on the floor, hanging off the end of their bed—it’s silly and eddie loves it because it makes him feel better about not being able to bend down even in his chair
they take turns making special baths for each other when they’re in more pain than usual, lighting candles and putting epsom salt and essential oils in the water, and then they’ll wash each other’s hair and body so so gently
decorating each other’s aids. cleaning them as a nice surprise when it’s been a little too long since the last time. making sure to always have at least one bottle of tylenol and tube of icyhot in the house at all times. reminding each other to take their meds. like i love them so so much i just think they’d treat each other so well

Soft domestic reddie: I LOVE the idea of them having a cat AND a dog. I love them as parents too, but i do think canon wise if they had had a happy ending they prob wouldn’t become parents of humans. They would be the best uncles tho.
Domestic reddie 2: eddie thought richie would be a mess in the kitchen and he would be the designated cook, but turns out bc Eddie grew up with all his health scares he cooks bland af and richie is actually amazing at making fancy GOOD food. This infuriates eddie a little bit sjjdjd
Domestic reddie 3 bc i just remembered: eddie gets them matching gucci shoes AND outfits and the Internet is amazed by how pretty richie can be when he doesn’t go out looking like hot garbage shdhdh
aw yay i’m a fan of this too!! i also prefer the idea that they adopt pets rather than having children, i think that works better in general with the vibe of canon than them having kids does, by the time they get to be together they’re forty years old and slightly worn out by life, so wanting to care for something together but not feeling equipped to do so with kids, they’d definitely opt for pets
a cat and a dog is great for them!! i feel like the cat and dog would get along really well (and maybe even reflect richie and eddie’s personalities like they do in @caliceal’s ricardo/eggie au because that’s so sweet and funny) and richie and eddie would have the best of both worlds when taking care of them
they go to the park so that their dog can run around and get it’s energy out, so eddie runs around with the dog on the grass, playing fetch and frisbee with him while richie watches from one of the park benches, their cat (who’s only a kitten at this time) laying on his lap, sleeping
(i think it’s probably out of the ordinary to put them in these roles rather than the other way around but my reasoning is that eddie loves to run, he didn’t really get to often as a child so running around with their dog is a lot of fun for him. also i headcanon richie as having to use crutches permanently after their return to derry because of that nasty fall he had when he came out of the deadlights—he definitely should’ve had some sort of severe injury there, so he needs to give his legs a rest every so often and is content to watch eddie getting his energy out with the dog because he gets to see eddie so happy.)
then in the evening when they’re back home richie and eddie curl up on the sofa together, the kitten sits in eddie’s lap and the dog jumps all over richie, licking his face and trying to get a hug from him, which of course richie gives many of
i like to think that they have a pitbull dog, she’s very friendly and i think that after pennywise they’d want to feel really safe and protected and they know their dog will protect them if they’re ever threatened
onto cooking, i think you’re right! eddie’s still very apprehensive of many foods and ingredients that make cooking great, because for nearly four decades he was conditioned into fearing them so much, he’s working on it with his therapist
it does make his cooking a little bland, and honestly i’m not sure eddie would even be a good cook regardless, no one taught him how to cook so the food usually comes out with one problem or another but!! richie eats it anyway to make eddie happy because he looks so proud that he managed to make something
eventually eddie decides that richie should be the designated cook because he makes dinner for them one night and wow it’s so much better than eddie’s, he’s surprisingly talented in cooking
richie promises eddie that he’ll teach him more about cooking once eddie feels comfortable using more ingredients and isn’t as worried about allergies, and then they can make dinner together
and omg yeS eddie buying clothes for richie so they can match!! i’ve talked before about richie buying eddie hawaiian shirts so that they can match, and i think eddie would definitely do the same thing because he wants to let richie in on this thing that he loves so much and of course richie’s delighted
as i’ve said before richie often looks like he got dressed in the dark, he’s pretty neat in general like he’s clean and his hair is normally nice even if it looks messy it’s just that his clothing style makes him look like a closet full of different clothes threw up on him or something
it does work for him though in a way it wouldn’t with anyone else
buT he really likes the stuff eddie buys for him to wear too!! eddie buys him a lot of designer clothes from brands he likes and makes sure he gets things that are still pretty close to richie’s style so that he feels comfortable in what he’s wearing
(when eddie dresses him up in gucci he likes to call himself eddie’s barbie doll 😭😭)
people are pretty shocked when articles and pictures come out of the two just going about their day, shopping, walking in the park etc and suddenly richie looks like thought actually went into his outfit—it’s not hard to guess that the outfit was eddie’s doing
people love it!! they think richie looks great in this style just as much as his other and it’s so cute to see him matching with his partner
i also like the idea of eddie braiding richie’s hair (long hair richie rights!!) and painting his nails or something because he wants to show richie how much he loves him in any way he can, he’s good at this kind of thing and wants to share what makes him happy with richie!! it’s not so easy since his left arm is a prosthetic but richie is patient and loves seeing eddie so concentrated and if it takes a while it’s not a problem because they enjoy spending time together even if it’s just while doing something simple
they love each other very much and both think the other is really handsome no what matter they wear :))

Idk I think people don’t write Eddie as disabled after being skewered by pennypiss because they either, like, have no idea how to and that’s daunting, OR the other reason would boil down to ‘it’s not sexy.’
And like, I’m sorry, but Richie doesn’t love Eddie cause he thinks he’s sexy. Richie thinks Eddie is sexy because he loves him.
Do you think a man who keeps a comb in his satchel, and a firstaid kit, and looks like something is perpetually pissing him off, is the sexiest dude anyways?
And Richie is a dweeb like come on. They both are not beacons of conventional attractiveness.
But that doesn’t fucking matter. It doesn’t matter if you are sexy to every person on the street (male fantasies! Male fantasies!).
Richie looks at Eddie and he sees his entire future and he chooses that and he’s chosen that his whole life. Eddie being in a wheelchair wouldn’t even phase him. He looks at that sexy middle aged grump who is now even shorter cause of sitting in the wheelchair, and all he sees is 🥰🥰🥰🥰😍😘
