found this abandoned quilt top while cleaning and had to finish it up finally. screen printed and sewn last semester and finally quilted and bound yesterday. using holographic foils to emulate the glassy appearance of diatoms under the microscope, i sewed a log cabin pattern as a playful nod to the idea that diatoms live in tiny glass houses.

this valentine's day i would like to express my undying gratitude to diatoms. diatoms make something like 20% of atmospheric oxygen, where would we be without them. also diatomaceous earth is just *chef's kiss*. and as if this wasn't enough, just yesterday i discovered the existence of diatom art?? like??
eveyone say thank you osamu oku (creator: the ones on the right) and klaus kemp (creator: the ones on the left)!!
i love you diatoms!!

Whoooooo wants keychains?
I was originally going to wait until the keychains got here to put them on sale, but I'm getting antsy, so they're on preorder! I estimate I'll receive all of them in a few days and then they'll ship out immediately, if you dare to purchase one. 😈
First up, a bunch of friendly fishy keychains! A coelacanth, a wild type betta, and a furry trout.
Then, some algae! Featuring shapely diatoms and dinoflagellates, as well as some nice green cyanobacteria.
Check them out here! https://garblegoods.bigcartel.com/

Glassy shell of microscopic algae inspires tiny ultrasound detectors for medical imaging
A multidisciplinary team of researchers from Skoltech has discovered the resonance frequencies of diatom frustules. These intricately structured silicon dioxide shells of single-celled microalgae provide a promising model for nature-inspired electronic and optical devices, such as tiny ultrasound detectors for advanced medical imaging and components for ultrafast signal processing in microchips of the future.
However, it will take a better understanding of diatom frustule properties for these exciting applications to happen, and the recent study in Applied Physics Letters is an important step in that direction.
Accounting for about one-fifth of the Earth's oxygen supply and a quarter of the planet's biomass, diatom algae are a principal component of plankton and a ubiquitous life form found in the oceans, waterways, and soils of the world.

I missed the day by about one hour. Please forgive me... ok thank you to my 0 readers for forgiving me
Anyways. Day 5: Diatoms through the microscope
Really love this one. So shiny. Would make a good album cover.
