Stomatopoda Meshwork

2024, hand cut suede openwork, 16x16in

i’ve been connecting plankton and lace together in my mind for a couple of months and attempting to create designs inspired by both, and I think I finally cracked it. i was gifted some lovely white suede a while ago and finally was able to put it to use! I designed a lace doily pattern inspired by mantis shrimp larvae digitally, then transferred it to the suede and cut it out by hand with my fabric shears. I think the fragility and delicacy of plankton really gives itself to lace designs. really happy with this piece and wondering how I can make this a series of multiple different planktonic species all as doilies :)

Hello!! If anyone has asked this question already then sorry, but i was curious about the embroidered fish fossils- are they based on specific specimen or species? I love how they look, theyre insanely cool!! You did an amazing job w them and i wish you all the best in your future projects!

I look through google for reference pictures so each one is based on a real specimen and species! the ones I embroider most commonly are from the genus Knightia. thank you so much!

my work is featured in a spread in the new publication Craftwerk! focused on artists with a connection to the American Midwest with threads of craft, art and queerness in their artwork. they released a free digital copy on their website, along with physical print versions. the art in here is awesome and I love the context they give in the beginning of the magazine. check it out here !
