Casually thinking about Darkvision in DnD and the implications of it, like how in true darkness you can only see shades of gray. So imagine looking up and the galaxy overhead is just gray and that’s the only way you’ve ever known it.
Okay, I’m really thinking about TAZ, like...
Lucretia, peering through a telescope: that star's such a beautiful blue
Davenport: it's fucking what?

My DM, to my party memeber: it's dark and dim and you cannot see
Me, checking his sheet: he has darkvision
Him: I have darkvision
My DM: it's dark and dimly lit
Me, muttering: that's not how darkvision works...

Hamish (playing Thaddeus): I ask, "Kjell, can you help me pull this wood out of the doorway?"
M (playing Kjell): "Absolutely."
DM: When you're up close you can tell that the 'door' is actually one of the damaged tables, relieved of its legs.
Hamish: What's on the other side? I have darkvision.
Tati (playing Seraph): My staff is lit up but I'm keeping it well back until I'm told otherwise.
DM: There's a short length of corridor, which looks like it's been tunnelled crudely into the rock rather than the well-constructed halls of the rest of the complex. There's another table-door ahead of you with the words 'Chamber of the Great One' carved directly into its surface, and the tunnel bends to the right.
Hamish: I go up and peek around the edges of the 'door'.
DM: Can you come out of the room for a moment?
Tati: Oh god.
Hamish: Okay...

Infravision!
A very confusing element of 2nd edition...
Tumblr media
Recognize "Billy" from the original Predator movie? Well, the Predator was using his thermal vision at that moment - and this is pretty much what infravision looks like. Thing is, I don't know anyone galaxy brained enough to accurately describe temperature variations like this. Especially not with that character in motion.
Below is an example of what "modern thermal" looks like, but it's still gradients and a lot of color temperatures to consider, so... still too much
Tumblr media
Below is night vision (I removed the green cast) this is typically how I use infravision because it's much easier on my brain.

I imagine this is how most of you run darkvision in 5e...

So most animals’ eyes have this thing called a tapetum. It’s in the back of the eye and it reflects light back to help them see in dim light. It’s also the thing that flashes in animals’ eyes when you shine a light past them at night.
Thing is, humans don’t have them. So they can’t see as great in dim light. And if you shine a flashlight past a person’s face, their eyes won’t glow.
So, theoretically, do DND races that have darkvision have tapetums? If you shine a flashlight at an elven rogue hiding in a tree, will their eyes glow back at you? And that human party member with eyes that shine in the dark, are they really human?

I saw your TAZ darkvision post and I do just wanna say: the entire crew would absolutely be able to see the colors of space! ^-^ Darkvision means you can see at all out to the range it specifies and then it ends. It's an improvement to vision and not something that changes it entirely, so Davenport for example (since we know he's a gnome) most likely has darkvision out to 60 feet, so beyond that their sight is identical to a humans! ^-^ All members of the starblaster would be able to appreciate the night sky equally (and I can imagine Taako having some absolutely rad clothes with space designs).
Very nice! That's pretty cool to hear (no idea how all that works but it's DnD so I accept). I do love that Davenport and the others get to see the Aurora Borealis and galaxies. I thought it'd be cool if Darkvision had its own pros and cons. Also just the humor potential of those with vs those without darkvision, just making up shit all the time ("Do you guys see that Bigfoot?" "Noo???" "Did you know there's a sparkly pink star right there?" "Calling bullshit on that one")
Appreciate the clarification!
(and especially with all those new space photos to drool over, excellent timing!)
