Hihihihi so I just read all of cta and this may be a very weird compliment! But!
After reading cta, I did not feel like starting on reading the sequel
I know, I know, doesn't sound good but I promise I have a point here!!
The ending was extraordinarily well done
When I read other fics, I will always, always get to the end thinking 'No!! I want more! It was too good!'
Not to say that other fics end badly, but the ending to cta was so perfectly well wrapped that I didn't have that feeling
I didn't want or need any more, the story is so well contained, so beautifully written that the endings leaves me perfectly satisfied, and the lovely, well rounded ending is set up perfectly throughout the whole text
Tw for suicide mention for those reading the ask, but:
Of course from the beginning, we know the climax comes around about when nightmare will be close to death, meaning thst by the time it comes around, the reader is expecting the ending to arrive, the anticipation for how it will be resolved or not resolved is hanging in the air and i loved it
There's nothing else that need wrapping up, nothing there that left me thinking there was something unfinished, or something that i felt i had to see more of, as everything was included and addressed finely and delicately to wrap the whole thing up
Knowing that the suicide will be the climax is so intriguing because the whole time i'm wondering what stages will be hit when and it was done so well
I never thought 'oh well what about this?' or 'why has it gone like that?' because of how it is structured and delivered
I didn't want to read more because I felt as if it didn't need any more, it was a whole and complete story with a great narrative arc snd even better character arcs
That said, I'm not discouraged from reading the second fic!!! I will absolutely read it! I am in fact excited for it!!
But, and, again, i mean this as a sincere and genuine compliment, i felt as if it wasn't necessary
It's just a lovely bonus i have every intention of reading :)
Good day/evening/night and I sure hope none of my words were taken as hurtful!
Hi!! That's perfectly, PERFECTLY valid.
The "sequel" is actually just little one shots from both ending time lines that just show either SOL or small scenarios so you're not actually missing any like plot or anything by not reading it.
I'm glad you liked it so much ;w;

Genuine question, is there anything about your city’s infrastructure/architecture that you particularly like (aside from it being where you live)?
here i assume you're referring to chicago. i will go to bat for this city. my complaints are largely a lot of inside baseball. i use sweeping complaints as shorthand--when i say something is ass it's because i want that thing to improve. if i really thought it was a lost cause i wouldn't talk about it. this is why i do not complain about schaumburg
continued below the cut
Tumblr media
architecturally i think you could hardly do much better. there's a great blend of landmark-tier buildings from a range of eras. this is the thompson center, a really phenomenal train station/govt services building combo
Tumblr media Tumblr media
but also some amazing residential buildings, like the commodore:
Tumblr media
and i mean this is a stock photo from around the bryn mawr stop but i can confirm that it is this dope.
Tumblr media
in terms of infrastructure, the thing is: it's good relative to the rest of the US. if we're talking about planning, about doing it RIGHT though we've got our priorities jumbled. see look
Tumblr media Tumblr media
we put 8 lanes of high speed traffic between the city and the lakefront for most of its length. this is an idiotic choice to have made and it's frankly a huge waste of what could be really good land use.
urban highways
transit access west of western ave and south of 33rd is poor
the illinois dept. of transportation's standards mean that every road they control is a nightmare. this is slowly turning around though and legislation is moving ahead to allow cdot to have control over its own roads (in part i think because the IL courts are currently working through some cases regarding whether or not the city/state can be sued for fatalities resulting from poor road design)
Tumblr media
good lird
but we DO have trains. now, because we've had poor leadership at the CTA reliability has suffered in a manner i can only describe as "bigly", particularly along the blue line. but we've had service cuts basically through the whole network
we also have lots of buses but we only just started to come around to the photo-enforced bus lanes idea. this is to say the problem is we let buses get stuck in traffic. generally the city's leadership has been keen to make it easier and cheaper to drive through the city. this is stupid for a variety of reasons that i won't get into here
i'm losing steam on this train of thought because it's fairly complex stuff and the north/south/west sides all have unique land use concerns. so without further questions i'll stop there.
one last thought
i don't like logan square because i think the people who live there are annoying podcaster instagram upcycled secondhand clothing types, the housing is expensive because it's trendy, and land use sucks ass west of the kennedy expressway
Tumblr media
this is a train station and transfer point for a few major bus routes

Is Your Website Silently Sabotaging Your Business? 5 Red Flags (and How to Fix Them)
Tumblr media
In today's digital landscape, your website is your storefront, your resume, and your first impression all rolled into one. But what if, instead of attracting customers and boosting your brand, it's actually driving them away?
Let's face it, a bad website can be a silent killer for your business. But fear not, fellow professionals! Here are 5 red flags to watch out for and actionable steps to turn your website into a lead-generating machine:
1. Mobile Malaise: In 2024, a mobile-friendly website isn't optional, it's essential. If your site looks like a 90s throwback on a smartphone, you're alienating a huge chunk of your audience. Fix: Invest in a responsive design that adapts seamlessly to any device. Google's Mobile-Friendly Test is a great starting point.
2. Content Coma: Is your website content gathering dust like an old encyclopedia? Yawn! Fresh, engaging content is key to keeping visitors interested and informed. Fix: Regularly update your website with blog posts, articles, or even short videos that showcase your expertise and address your target audience's pain points.
3. Navigation Nightmare: Imagine navigating a maze blindfolded. That's what your website feels like if it's not intuitive and user-friendly. Fix: Conduct user testing to identify pain points and optimize your navigation for clarity and ease of use. Think clear menus, logical structure, and a search bar for good measure.
4. Speed Demon (in Reverse): Nobody likes waiting, especially online. If your website takes longer to load than a dial-up connection, visitors will bounce faster than a rogue email. Fix: Optimize your images, reduce plugins, and consider upgrading your hosting plan for lightning-fast speed. Google PageSpeed Insights can help you diagnose and fix the issue.
5. Conversion Catastrophe: So, you've got visitors, but are they taking the next step? If your website lacks clear calls to action (CTAs) or forms with endless fields, conversions will plummet. Fix: Make your CTAs prominent and action-oriented (e.g., "Download Now," "Schedule a Consultation"). Streamline forms and only ask for essential information.
Bonus Tip: Remember, your website is a living, breathing entity. Continuously monitor analytics, track user behavior, and test different elements to see what resonates best.

You cherish your regular walks with your dog for all the benefits they provide: they keep you fit and healthy, provide a healthy dose of vitamin D and build the link between owner and pet. But if your dog is accustomed to straining on his leash, these everyday walks become a nightmare very soon. It is more than just uncomfortable for you to pull your dog on a leash. For the people you walk by, it can be frightening and potentially dangerous for your pup, too. The only option is a Best Dog Collar for Pulling. Does he pull and stretch the leash when you take him on a stroll? If this is the case, it may be more than inconvenient for you and other pedestrians. Failure to control your dog with the leash increases his risk of injury, especially when walking in a crowded metropolitan setting. There may be a problem with the leash and collar. Many combinations of leashes and collars are ineffective for controlling dog behaviour. Therefore, regardless of the temperament or size of your dog, he should learn to walk by you and let himself be led obediently without pulling wildly. And this is made possible by the anti-pull collars. But how can you make an informed decision from the plethora of collars on the market? Not to worry, we have your back! So that you and your beloved dog can rediscover the joy of walking together, we've studied and chosen the most effective, secure, and well-designed collars. We will illustrate some of the best dog harnesses and collars for pulling. It will address the various styles of harnesses and collars that prevent your dog from pulling. And clarify when making your choice the things you want to look for. Best Dog Collars For Pulling PetSafe Easy Walk Dog Harness 2 Hounds Freedom Harness Country Brook Petz Martingale Collar PetSafe Gentle Leader No-Pull Dog Headcollar Walk ‘n Train Polyester Dog Headcollar 1- PetSafe Easy Walk Dog Harness Two various no-pull technologies are used with the PetSafe Leash. Since it not only comes with a front loop, but it tightens when your dog pulls, too. This is one of the best choices for first-time dog owners and is quick to use and easy to put on. The martingale loop on the Easy Walk Dog Harness PetSafe helps avoid leash twisting. This prevents dogs from being caught in a common issue, causing them to pull and tug. The Leash Front-Chest. A special front-chest attachment is used in this harness, allowing you to guide your dog to the side and shift his attention while heading towards you. Nylon soft. For a comfortable fit, it is made of soft, sturdy nylon. Simple Buckle to Snap. The dog's shoulder and belly straps feature a simple on-and-off snap buckle. 4 Points for Adjustment. This brace is manufactured with 4 points of adjustment. For each dog, this means that the fit is correct and that the harness fits securely on their bodies. 8 Distinct Sizes. This harness comes in eight different sizes, the medium/large being the most widely purchased size. For larger breeds, sizes vary from petite for small dogs to extra large. 2- 2 Hounds Freedom Harness A flawed gem from 2 Hounds comes next up, which is well worth a spot on your shortlist. Depending on your dog's disposition, you can start by selecting from a wide array of vibrant color-ways. The nylon collar is sturdy and comes fitted with two ties. Well, the front
link provides power steering so that when you're walking, you can better guide your dog, especially when you need to encourage him in a specific direction. On the other hand, the rear attachment has a martingale loop with a restricted tightening motion. This serves to disperse pressure equally without causing pain points. With this 2-point leash included, you can purchase the harness only or the saddle. In a crowded area, how does this collar stand out? There's no reason not to pair this collar with your dog, with over 20 color schemes to choose from. The robust nylon construction is highly flexible, enabling a tight fit. It would help if you took plenty of time to measure your dog and then research the sizing charts for an equivalent period while you're shopping for dog collars and harnesses. Get this wrong, and you're going to be throwing away your money. With no buckle and a martingale leash, if he begins straining without ever choking him or causing him to cough. This is the ideal training technique that helps you to exercise complete control over your furball. This collar will gently tighten when your dog begins to pull, so he can avoid straining at the leash and continue to walk in check. This collar is fully adjustable and strengthened at the pressure points, offering excellent overall value and a tremendous no-slip harness for small to medium-sized pups. [amalinkspro type="cta-btn-css" ctabtn-id="" asin="" apilink="https://amzn.to/3xNVqsw" addtocart="false" new-window="true" nofollow="true" alignment="aligncenter"]View on Amazon[/amalinkspro] Features: Pull-on Size of 15 to 21-inch neck Buckle-free 4- PetSafe Gentle Leader No-Pull Dog Headcollar The PetSafe Gentle Leader Dog Headcollar is a wonderful tool for rapidly modifying the behaviour of a dog that pulls. A veterinarian devised this collar, and many trainers and veterinarians suggest it. Despite its simplistic design, it is available in five sizes and eight colors. However, the crucial aspect is that this collar produces benefits quickly, practically instantly, in some dogs. It's worth a try, and the PetSafe Gentle Collar's low price is another major benefit. However, you should be aware that certain dogs are resistant to anything that passes over their face or above them, which could make it more difficult for them to adapt to this collar. No matter how long you desensitise certain dogs, they simply cannot become accustomed. Even though this dog collar is not ideal for all canines, it will effectively avoid pulling in the vast majority of canines. [amalinkspro type="image-link" asin="B007B2SXSQ" new-window="true" apilink="https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007B2SXSQ?tag=pdw2021-20&linkCode=osi&th=1&psc=1" img-size="500,500" addtocart="false" nofollow="true" alt="PetSafe Gentle Leader Headcollar, No-Pull Dog Collar – Perfect for Leash & Harness Training – Stops Pets from Pulling and Choking on Walks – Medium 25-60 Lb, Raspberry Pink" alignment="aligncenter"]https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/413Gg0fsc3L._SL500_.jpg[/amalinkspro]
[amalinkspro type="cta-btn-css" ctabtn-id="0" asin="" apilink="https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007B2SXSQ?tag=pdw2021-20&linkCode=osi&th=1&psc=1" addtocart="false" new-window="true" nofollow="true" alignment="aligncenter"]View on Amazon[/amalinkspro] Features: Comfortable control: Reduces excessive pulling on the leash and other undesirable behaviours including barking, lunging, and jumping. Perfect for training: Ideal for teaching dogs how to heel. Provides quick mild control. No pressure: The collar is positioned high on the dog's neck without exerting pressure on the throat. Comfortable neoprene cushioned nose loop. 5- Walk ‘n Train Polyester Dog Headcollar The Walk 'n Train Dog Headcollar fits like a standard collar but serves as a halter, relieving pressure from the dog's throat. This design style works well for some dogs, particularly those that do not mind having a strap wrapped around their muzzle or head. Unfortunately, some dogs cannot tolerate this type of halter with a noseband (which resembles a muzzle). You will need great training and patience to eliminate your pet's nervousness. This is different than your objective: get your dog to quit pulling on the leash as soon as possible. However this type of collar works brilliantly for some dogs, but only you can evaluate whether this collar will be a good fit for your dog. [amalinkspro type="image-link" asin="B0002DIPFW" new-window="true" apilink="https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002DIPFW?tag=pdw2021-20&linkCode=osi&th=1&psc=1" img-size="450,450" addtocart="false" nofollow="true" alt="Coastal Pet Walk 'n Train Dog Head Halter - Gentle Leader for Dogs - No-Pull Dog Harness - Quick-Drying Polyester - Black - Medium" alignment="aligncenter"]https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/31KFbsSZ8KL._SL500_.jpg[/amalinkspro] [amalinkspro type="cta-btn-css" ctabtn-id="0" asin="" apilink="https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002DIPFW?tag=pdw2021-20&linkCode=osi&th=1&psc=1" addtocart="false" new-window="true" nofollow="true" alignment="aligncenter"]View on Amazon[/amalinkspro] Features: Material: Its quick-drying polyester webbing and heavy-duty quick-release snap make it simple to put on and remove. Safety Loop: The included safety loop connects to her usual collar, allowing you to maintain control even if she escapes the head halter. Padded: The nose band is padded for enhanced comfort, and the halter's side straps permit her to continue to pant and drink water while wearing it. For Pushing Dogs, Collar vs. Harness How will I stop dragging dogs? A convenient way to stop your dog from pulling on the lead is a no-pull leash. It is also a better option for many. It doesn't harm a dog, rather than the throat, it is tightened around his chest. Multiple kinds of no-pull dog harnesses are available. To select the correct harness for your cat, consult a vet. To stop your dog from pulling on the leash, you can even use a martingale collar. What's the distinction between a regular collar and a martingale collar? As a dog pulls, a martingale collar tightens. It would not only stop a dog from choking but also keep the collar from escaping. Many dogs have even smaller heads or the same size as their necks. It's much easier to run than a regular collar. It might be able to wiggle out of the collar when a dog backs up. At the same time, the collar of the martingale tightens and protects it from slipping off. A martingale collar often tightens if the dog pulls on a leash. Also Read : Best Training Collar for Stubborn Dogs You Need Training, Too, to Stop Pulling on the Leash! Many owners erroneously believe that all it takes to stop their dog from pulling is to stop using a standard collar and switch to the proper tool. He will stop pulling, but only when the gear is engaged. Utilising the above-described tools will provide you with training time and allow you to walk your dog in peace when you are not training. BUT – training still needs to be completed!
In summary, you can train your dog not to pull on the leash by rewarding him when he is not pulling. On walks, reinforce his good behaviour until it becomes the new norm. CONCLUSION OK, with our best dog collar for pulling feedback, you can now conveniently compare the finest like-for-like harnesses and collars. If you've weighed your pooch correctly and determined what sort of collar will fit best, buying one of these harnesses is not a difficult decision. If you opt for a front leash, a back harness, or a head collar should depend on your dog's temperament and whether you go out walking, jogging, or running. The 2 Hounds Freedom Harness was our favorite for the dog for pulling because it did the job and did not cause them any pain. It's thick enough for big dogs, and it tightens just enough to give them a training cue without choking them. https://petsdogworld.com/best-dog-collar-for-pulling/?feed_id=1027&_unique_id=655fb9f3ae342

Last summer, the Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) issued fines to Canada's major airlines for hundreds of violations related to mass flight delays and cancellations. In December, violations frequently concern a failure to update passengers during flight disruptions or promptly address their compensation claims.
Some passengers and industry experts argue the fines, which typically range between $2,500 and $39,000, aren't much of a deterrent for misbehaving airlines because the forfeitures are low," said Ian Jack, a spokesperson for the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA), a non-profit travel agency. "We have yet to see the regulator really bring out a big stick on anything."
The CTA, Canada's transport regulator, is tasked with enforcing federal air passenger protection regulations that came into effect in 2019. The agency has been flooded with complaints that the airlines aren't playing by the rules.
The CTA doled out the most prominent fine—$126,000—to Sunwing for 36 violations for failing to keep passengers updated during flight delays in December, when a winter storm forced the airline to cancel 67 flights, disrupting plans for thousands of holiday travelers.
After Sunwing canceled their Dec. 21 return flight, Mohammad Jazayeri and his wife, Setareh Sajadi, were stuck at their resort in Puerto Vallarta for six extra days. The couple said they spent most of that time waiting hours in the hotel lobby for word on a rebooked flight.
"The communication was horrible," said Jazayeri, who lives in North Vancouver, B.C. "It was a nightmare... We didn't know what would happen to us when we got home. The couple eventually gave up on Sunwing and paid an additional $1,544 out-of-pocket for a return flight on another airline.
Following his experience, Jazayeri believes the airline's fine is not high enough to have any impact and is kind of a joke because $126,000 means nothing," he said. "I think they should be fined in the amount that they can relive the pain of all the impacted customers."
According to the CTA, Flair Airlines, and WestJet committed the most violations related to flight disruptions. WestJet is set to purchase Sunwing in the coming weeks in a merger deal and was fined $39,000 for 40 violations for failing to compensate passengers for flight delays last summer.

The web design industry has changed dramatically since its inception. Back then, websites consisted primarily of text and images, with little emphasis placed on graphical designs and user experience (UX). Nowadays, there are countless tools at our disposal to create beautiful websites.
When you visit a website, you expect to see something useful and relevant. Unfortunately, many companies fail to deliver on their promise because they don’t put enough effort into web design. In addition to this, many companies neglect to optimize their websites properly. This means they miss out on potential customers who might otherwise be converted into paying clients. In order to get visitors to take action on your site, you need to optimize your landing page.
To improve conversions, get rid of unnecessary elements like graphics and text ads. Instead, focus on creating clean and simple sites that are optimized for both mobile and desktop. Use a CMS (content management system) to ensure your site remains consistent throughout. Finally, don’t forget to test each page thoroughly before launching it live. The last thing you want is a customer who leaves your site due to frustration. In this article, we have compiled a list of web design mistakes that can hurt your website’s conversion rate.
So, let’s see the list of web design mistakes that can hurt your website’s conversion rate:-
1. Difficult Navigation
Difficult Navigation can seriously damage your website’s conversion rate by making it difficult for potential customers to find what they’re looking for. This often occurs when the navigation is buried beneath too many links or buttons, forcing users to scroll down instead of clicking on the items that interest them.
In addition, poorly designed menus can also frustrate visitors and cause them to abandon your website entirely.
If you want people to convert their visit into a purchase or registration form, designing easy-to-use menus that are clearly labeled will help you achieve this goal. Furthermore, loading pages quickly and avoiding annoying ads and popups will also help improve your site’s performance. By keeping these factors in mind, you can make sure that Difficult Navigation doesn’t stand in the way of converting as many visitors as possible into customers!
2. Lacking Visual Hierarchy
A lack of visual hierarchy can hurt your website’s conversion rate if it creates a cluttered or confusing environment. This confused and busy atmosphere makes it difficult for users to find what they’re looking for, making them more likely to abandon your page. In addition, poorly designed pages are less visually appealing which could trigger negative emotions that may discourage potential customers from clicking through to convert.
To avoid injuring your website’s conversion rate, make sure all of the content on your pages is easy to scan and understand at a glance. Use clear typography and organized images that help guide the user down the path you want them to take. Keep in mind that good design isn’t just about pretty colors and shapes–it also has a functional purpose! By using effective layout principles like spacing, margin%, header sizes, etc.
3. Having No/Unclear Call To Action
Most people know that a clear and actionable Call To Action (CTA) is one of the most important elements of any website. However, many neglects to consider what factors could negatively impact CTA performance. One common reason for low CTA conversion rates is having no or unclear goals or objectives associated with your visitor’s visit. This can be due to a lack of understanding about who your target market is or simply forgetting why someone should take action on your site.
In addition, poorly designed CTAs may not be appealing enough for visitors to click on them. Many times these CTAs are placed amidst poor design visuals or havoc nightmares instead of appearing as part of an enticing user interface. Poorly executed CTAs also tend to place too much emphasis on sales pitches instead of providing useful information that will help motivate visitors into taking action. Finally, implementing popups and ads that obscure the main content area can also hurt conversion rates.
4. Unresponsive Designs
Unresponsive designs can hurt your website’s conversion rate by causing hesitation or confusion among your visitors. This can be due to slow load times, inconsistent positioning of elements on the screen, and an overall visually unappealing design. In some cases, unresponsive designs may even cause users to leave your site entirely without completing a purchase or signing up for email updates.
An unresponsive design can also lead to navigation problems and complex menus that are difficult to navigate. Passing information from one section of the page to another is also fraught with difficulty as everything seems muddled together. To avoid any negative consequences associated with unresponsive designs, make sure you have a thorough understanding of Google’s Web Standards guidelines and use them when designing your website.
5. Having A Cluttered Design
A cluttered design can hurt your website’s conversion rate in a few different ways. First, it can be difficult for visitors to find the information they are looking for on your page because there is too much visual noise. Second, visuals that are meant to be attention-grabbing may instead end up being confusing or overwhelming. And finally, poorly designed pages make it difficult for people to complete a transaction or take any other action on your site.
All of these factors will have an impact on your overall online sales performance and may even lead potential customers to abandon ship altogether. In order for your website design to work in favor of conversions, think about how you can reduce clutter and create simple but effective designs that grab people’s attention from the very first glance!
6. Slow Loading Time
Slow loading time can damage your website’s conversion rate in a number of ways. First, it can frustrate users and make them less likely to complete the purchase or registration process. This is especially true if they have to wait longer than usual for the page to load. Secondly, slow loading times may decrease user engagement as they spend less time on your site and are more likely to leave without making a purchase or registering for information that is important to them.
In terms of SEO, poor performance due to slow loading times will lower Google’s Ranking Scores for your site as people are less likely to engage with pages that take too long to load. Finally, slower-loading pages may also lose customers who find better options online. So not only does fast loading affect how much money you make from visitors; it also has negative consequences for your overall business strategy..
7. Overuse/Poor Choice Of Colors
When it comes to color choice on your website, you want to make sure that the colors you choose are complementary and work well together. This is because different colors can affect how people perceive your site (for better or for worse). For example, if you use a lot of orange-colored elements on your website, blue viewers might see them as too aggressive or overwhelming. In contrast, green viewers may find them calming and refreshing.
The same thing goes for other color combinations – Make sure that they harmonize well with one another so that users feel comfortable visiting your page without feeling overwhelmed or confused. Another way in which overuse of certain colors can hurt conversion rates is by being visually busy instead of focusing on the user’s needs. This leads to users feeling anxious and strung out because there isn’t enough clarity or simplicity present on the page. To reduce these negative effects, aim to keep all main elements within easy reach while still providing ample visual stimulation.
8. Not Including Social Proof
If social proof is not included on your website, it can hurt your conversion rate. When potential customer sees that other people are clicking through to the same page as them or filling out the form before them, they are more likely to choose to do the same. Without social proof, visitors may feel like their choices don’t matter and are less likely to take action. In order for your website’s conversion rate to be optimal, it is important that you include compelling content that speaks directly to the needs of your target audience.
This can be done by featuring case studies or testimonials from satisfied customers. Additionally, make sure all of the elements of visual design (copywriting style headlines, image size, and placement) work together in harmony with one another so that everything creates a cohesive message. By using these tactics properly and incorporating social proof where necessary, you will increase conversions and improve user satisfaction on your website!
Conclusion
These web design mistakes might seem really uncommon but they are impacting your conversion rates just as much as the ones we mentioned above. Even though you might be using high-quality design and working extra hard on your landing page, if you keep on implementing these errors, it becomes difficult to see a positive change in your website.
To make sure that your website does not follow any of these mistakes than simply switch to an expert website designer who specializes in high-quality web design. This way, you will be confident about the quality of their work and can focus fully on improving its usability and performance instead!

Hey, Dolls!
I've made the mistake on my main blog of not putting a pinned post with all my short stories. So, to avoid that tedious task again, I'll go ahead and make this post with what I have so far and update it as I go along.
Enjoy!

Naw, Fuck the CTA: How ‘bout UberPool? With a Random Stranger?
@Tate Lacroix
Thank God: no work this evening... kind of a relief.  Miah certainly didn’t mind waiting tables, but the Saint Patrick’s Day bar close rush had been kind of a nightmare.  Not all drunk people were pleasant, and treating service staff well apparently wasn’t as heavily emphasized in Chicago as it seemed to be in Minneapolis ((Miah’s hometown)).
The only real reason he bothered working at all was to, essentially (albeit a very small scale), launder his money... that, and his job kept him halfway busy, preventing him from becoming a shut-in - something Miah feared could all too easily happen without him noticing.  Having a regular schedule, somewhere he was compelled to show up, answering to other people (really everyone, including the diner’s patrons), was his way of proving to himself that he was at least a functioning addict; a contributing member of society... look how much better he was than fucking Ashley ((Mom)), in, yeah, in virtually every way.
No, he didn’t really need the money, but, frankly, serving tables, even during the third shift at a shady-ass diner was really easy. Miah was at huge advantage: it wasn’t hard to be amiable when the warm, white haze of content the opiates he was usually on provided for him, like a security blanket comforting him from the inside-out.  As long as he kept that tolerance down and the supply steady, it was hard to make him upset.  The smack (or the oxy - whatever he had available) basically worked as a performance enhancer: Miah was warm and friendly, generally charismatic, and it rubbed off on the patrons who weren’t complete assholes.  He had whatever was the waistaff equivalent to ‘good bedside manner’.
But this evening, Miah and his smack could hang out alone.  He couldn’t wait; he’d get much higher than he ever would at work or in public.  After making a (pretty massive) drop downtown to the supplier who needed to divvy up what Miah provided for them to street-level distributors and treating himself to some take-out sushi, he checked both the Uber and Lyft apps.  It was a surprisingly slow night in terms of available drivers:  20 minutes for UberBlack, but less than 4 if he’d opt for UperPool.  Frankly, it was no contest.  Miah’s mood was high (pun intended), and he settled on UberPool, selecting some non-descript brown Kia Sedan, which pulled over to pick him up in less than 3 minutes!
Miah was the first passenger to climb into the backseat.  The driver wasn’t one of those chatty types; in face, he was rather taciturn.  Not a problem, per se, but Miah was actually feeling pretty talkative.
Tumblr media
After greeting the guy with a cheerful ‘hello!’ and getting a subtle nod in response, Miah pulled out his phone so he could mess with it while the sedan circled a few downtown blocks in search of the other passenger.
