Hi! I’m writing my own music, and Adamandi is an inspiration. I’m just wondering, has there been any inspiration when it came to you two writing musicals? (Adamandi, The Art of Pleasing Princes, Ghost Story, and any other future musicals.) Such as, any movies, TV shows or any other musicals? I find the aesthetics and music in these musicals all so different and I love that! And the themes in these musicals are so interesting! (/vpos!)
Great question! It's hard to separate genuine inspiration from research, since once we get an idea we usually try to consume everything that's related to what we want to write to figure out what we wanna add to the cultural conversation. Sometimes we also get inspiration from a work because we don't like it and want to position our piece in opposition to that one. But for this post we'll try to keep it to Genuine Inspiration that we consumed before we wrote each piece (hey, this thing is cool, this helped me figure out how I wanna write my thing for the better.)
Maybe we'll break this up by show:
TAOPP
Fun light fantasy with heart that plays with the tropes of fantasy settings, a la classic DND settings, Six of Crows, Terry Pratchett
Mel took a class on the High Middle Ages and read On The Origins of Courtliness (from which the title is derived!) and The Ballad of Tristan and Isolde, which got sort of melangéd into the Princes court world- living and dying by the king's pleasure, etc.
Aesthetically, the TV show The Great? Mel watched it a little bit before writing Princes and the anachronistic dialogue + rules of court drama have something to do with it.
Not much musical inspo for this tbh, I think it was just our first go at Writing A Show Together so a lot of our influences were just other musical soundtracks we thought might be the vibe we were aiming for. (Probably Pippin, 35mm, Great Comet, etc..)
Similarly with lyrics, I wasn't really thinking of a lyrical style, but I think I based a lot of my song forms on Something Rotten as the other show I knew set in the same era (using the very loose definition of "the same era"). ~Mel
ADAMANDI GENERAL INSPO:
the usual dark academia medias (Maurice and Another Country were our favorites) and also attending undergrad at a dark academia ass college
Lots of folk horror! (The Wicker Man (1973) - was particularly fun for me in thinking about the Catholicism storyline -Mel)
Jordan Peele movies like Get Out and Us
For musicals, Passion was really inspirational in both tone and subject matter.
Lyrically, I tried to think about Falsettos and Sunday- very lyrically dense shows that portray the intricate vocabularies of a specific, often highly intellectual subculture. What shibboleths do academics use to identify who does and doesn't belong? And why is the word "shibboleth" so not singable :( I think really liking Matilda as a kid also had something to do with it. ~Mel
I looked at a lot of horror musicals for a research paper but didn't like them much. (Except Little Shop. I love Little Shop and kinned the dentist in high school.) So I guess that's inspiration but in a what-Not-to-do way? Which is how I stumble on a lot of "inspiration" - Elliot
ADAMANDI MUSICAL INSPO:
chamber pop, baroque pop (incorporating the orchestral/acoustic elements of "dark academia" movie soundtracks with alternative pop and rock that's associated with the dark academia aesthetic more thematically)
The Dresden Dolls/Amanda Palmer's music
swing, jazz, dark cabaret (for the 1930s vibe)
Murder ballads (e.g. American Murder Song)
also weirdly the soundtrack to the Yellowjackets TV show. I love the eerie vocals in them and the creepy use of body percussion/breath - Elliot
here's an early inspo playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2wjhDj3ZzR01ghNfB03sYC?si=6f38f4c5f2ee43c7)
GHOST STORY
(more of a reading list since we're thinking top-down for this one!)
M. Butterfly by David Henry Hwang. I will never write anything as bangin' as "Being an Oriental, I could never be completely a man." - Elliot
Powers of Horror: An Essay on Abjection by Julia Kristeva
Stranger Intimacy by Nayan Shah
A View From the Bottom by Tan Hoang Nguyen
Ishtyle: Accenting Gay Indian Nightlife by Kareem Khubchandani
For musicals, Assassins and Parade
Arcadia and Follies are my touchstones for how the past and present can intersect onstage, and what got me excited about doing it ourselves! ~Mel
GHOST STORY MUSICAL INSPO
ragtime, jazz, Americana, blues, folk, country ! For inspo, trying to look for American folk music as close to 1880 as possible, but it's hard to find. Allowing myself to listen to stuff up til 1920.
Also alternative pop/rock/indie/whatever per usual. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0QwtUiwwZfc3TYMy0DarOq?si=cc9d5129d43b4aeb is my working inspiration playlist right now - Elliot

Jon is said to be called black heart bastard in books. Besides him Rhaegar, Jaime, Bronn and Brown Ben Plumm are mention to have black hearts. Melisandre told Davos that Others also have black heart. Do you think it's implying about treachery and duplicity in these characters?
Oh, let's do it the old-fashioned way and just check out Every Single Mention! :)
One thing that stands out is that the black heart is usually assigned in an accusatory manner by a different character, so the connotation to treachery or cruelty is definitely an in-universe trope, while at the same time creating some fun parallels between those so described.
Black hearts a-plenty. Lots of quotes.
"Rhaegar … Rhaegar won, damn him. I killed him, Ned, I drove the spike right through that black armor into his black heart, and he died at my feet. They made up songs about it. Yet somehow he still won. (AGOT, Eddard X)
-> Dead, yet triumphant. An armored heart.
So many dead, so very many. Their corpses hung limply, their faces slack or stiff or swollen with gas, unrecognizable, hardly human. The garments the sisters took from them were decorated with black hearts, grey lions, dead flowers, and pale ghostly stags. (ACOK, Tyrion XV)
-> A sigil worn by the dead.
Styr scowled. "His heart may still be black."
"Then cut it out." (ASOS, Jon II)
-> A mark of treachery. In need of killing.
"So tell me, Ser Davos Seaworth, and tell me truly—does your heart burn with the shining light of R'hllor? Or is it black and cold and full of worms?" [...] It is well you did not lie to me. I would have known. The Other's servants oft hide black hearts in gaudy light, so R'hllor gives his priests the power to see through falsehoods." She stepped lightly away from the cell. "Why did you mean to kill me?" (ASOS, Davos III)
-> Treacherous, in opposition to fire, with ill intent.
"Why? Is it your fault that Bronn's an insolent black-hearted rogue? He's always been an insolent black-hearted rogue. That's what I liked about him." (ASOS, Tyrion IX)
-> A mark of disloyalty.
Ser Brynden laughed again. "Much as I would welcome the chance to take that golden sword away from you and cut out your black heart, your promises are worthless. I would gain nothing from your death but the pleasure of killing you, and I will not risk my own life for that . . . as small a risk as that may be." (AFFC, Jaime VI)
-> A mark of treachery. In need of killing.
Jon felt as stiff as a man of sixty years. Dark dreams, he thought, and guilt. His thoughts kept returning to Arya. There is no way I can help her. I put all kin aside when I said my words. If one of my men told me his sister was in peril, I would tell him that was no concern of his. Once a man had said the words his blood was black. Black as a bastard's heart. (ADWD, Jon VI)
-> A mark of treachery (against his family) caused by torn loyalty (between the Watch and the Starks).
"Ser Grandfather knows how to count. The Second Sons have gone over to the Yunkai'i." Daario turned his head and spat. "That's for Brown Ben Plumm. When next I see his ugly face I will open him from throat to groin and rip out his black heart." (ADWD, Daenerys VI)
-> A mark of treachery. In need of killing.
A horn of mead was never far from his hand, so the spittle he sprayed when making threats was sweet with honey. He called Jon Snow a craven, a liar, and a turncloak, cursed him for a black-hearted buggering kneeler, a robber, and a carrion crow, accused him of wanting to fuck the free folk up the arse. Twice he flung his drinking horn at Jon's head, though only after he had emptied it. (ADWD, Jon XI)
-> Variety! An unrelenting negotiator with high demands who cannot be moved. Treacherous only in the expectations of generosity placed on him, not in true falseness.
Ghost came racing from the gate. Tormund's horse shied so hard that the wildling almost lost his saddle. "Naught to be feared?" Jon said. "Ghost, stay."
"You are a black-hearted bastard, Lord Crow." Tormund Horn-Blower lifted his own warhorn to his lips. The sound of it echoed off the ice like rolling thunder, and the first of the free folk began to stream toward the gate. (ADWD, Jon XII)
-> Same as above: Unrelenting, intimidating, stern.
Bonus Black-heartedness:
The Hoares
The west coast of the North has also oft been beset by reavers, and several of the Hungry Wolf's wars were forced upon him when longships out of Great Wyk, Old Wyk, Pyke, and Orkmont descended upon his western coasts beneath the banners of Harrag Hoare, King of the Iron Islands. For a time the Stony Shore did fealty to Harrag and his ironmen, swathes of the wolfswood were nothing but ashes, and Bear Island was a base for reaving, ruled by Harrag's black-hearted son, Ravos the Raper.  (The World of Ice and Fire - The North: The Kings of Winter)
Archmaester Hake tells us that the kings of House Hoare were, "black of hair, black of eye, and black of heart." Their foes claimed their blood was black as well, darkened by the "Andal taint," for many of the early Hoare kings took maidens of that ilk to wife. True ironborn had salt water in their veins, the priests of the Drowned God proclaimed; the black-blooded Hoares were false kings, ungodly usurpers who must be cast down. (The World of Ice and Fire - The Iron Islands: The Black Blood)
-> A mark of cruelty as well as treachery and illegitimacy. In need of killing. (Historically opposed to the dragons.)
The Heart of Old Volantis
Who built it? When? Why? Most maesters accept the common wisdom that declares it to be of Valyrian construction, for its massive walls and labyrinthine interiors are all of solid rock, with no hint of joins or mortar, no chisel marks of any kind, a type of construction that is seen elsewhere, most notably in the dragonroads of the Freehold of Valyria, and the Black Walls that protect the heart of Old Volantis.  (The World of Ice and Fire - The Reach: Oldtown)
They must have a library in Old Volantis, surely. I may find a better copy there, if I can find a way inside the Black Walls to the city's heart. (ADWD, Tyrion IV)
One looked toward the Long Bridge and the black-walled heart of Old Volantis across the river. (ADWD, Tyrion VII)
-> A black heart may simply be armored in black, protecting what is within.
So a black heart does, indeed, indicate treachery and duplicity, mortal animosity, often in opposition to a fire-related enemy. It can also indicate illegitimacy, and it carries a strong connotation with death, though in the case of Ben Plumm it is survival he champions. It may indicate a "wall" or "armor" around the true intentions of the heart, similarly to a metaphorical Wall of Ice.
Honorable mention: Dark Heart
One spoke with the timbre of a child. The floating heart pulsed from dimness to darkness. [...] Perched above her, the dragon spread his wings and tore at the terrible dark heart, ripping the rotten flesh to ribbons, and when his head snapped forward, fire flew from his open jaws, bright and hot.  (ACOK, Daenerys IV)
-> In opposition to Daenerys and her dragons.
The dwarf woman studied her with dim red eyes. "I see you," she whispered. "I see you, wolf child. Blood child. I thought it was the lord who smelled of death . . ." She began to sob, her little body shaking. "You are cruel to come to my hill, cruel. I gorged on grief at Summerhall, I need none of yours. Begone from here, dark heart. Begone!" (ASOS, Arya VIII)
-> A child. A wolf child. A dark heart.
Or, interestingly distinct: Heart of Darkness
At her command, one produced an iron key. The door opened, hinges shrieking. Daenerys Targaryen stepped into the hot heart of darkness and stopped at the lip of a deep pit. Forty feet below, her dragons raised their heads. Four eyes burned through the shadows—two of molten gold and two of bronze. (ADWD, Daenerys II)
-> Where dragons dwell.
Most sinister of all the sorcerers of Asshai are the shadowbinders, whose lacquered masks hide their faces from the eyes of gods and men. They alone dare to go upriver past the walls of Asshai, into the heart of darkness. On its way from the Mountains of the Morn to the sea, the Ash runs howling through a narrow cleft in the mountains, between towering cliffs so steep and close that the river is perpetually in shadow, save for a few moments at midday when the sun is at its zenith. In the caves that pockmark the cliffs, demons and dragons and worse make their lairs. The farther from the city one goes, the more hideous and twisted these creatures become...until at last one stands before the doors of the Stygai, the corpse city at the Shadow's heart, where even the shadowbinders fear to tread. Or so the stories say. (The World of Ice and Fire - The Bones and Beyond: Asshai-by-the-Shadow)
-> A place of demons, dragons "and worse". A place of corpses. Marked by the run of a river named Ash, a city named Stygai. Truly stygian.
Far be in from me to cast aspersions (Lies, I love casting those.) but given that Jon is associated with the term most frequently, I'd suspect he will end up playing a role in opposition to a fire-related enemy, who will want him dead, guarding his heart's true intentions behind a black armor and plotting with ill intent. Perhaps accused of trying to be a usurper, perhaps accused of demanding too much, perhaps trying to reconcile a taint in his blood with his loyalty to the Starks.

Do you crowd in your weakness, or carry it like Jesus?
Or just wonder where the peace is?
The heart's beautiful; the brain's where the beast lives
All these names on a train, and I'm trying to put my piece in
I paid for days, till my pain is raised
This spirit in my lyrics' phrase
And when it plays let the fire blaze
And remember to the higher plane I came
Dark dark days, come and go to fill my heart
Light fades, come and go to fill that Ark
I pain, just to go and spill this tooth
Now when truth was reality and lost in its challenge
You see, what was out the window
And you was pretending, and I had an info
And we was just listening, all with my kin-folk
Hear me here-ly, here where the cliff's low
Van Gogh's crows, over wheat-fields of gold
Forget everything you know
Read a secret, hid it right under-nose
Go ahead and seek everything you want
Everything you want, you already got
This is just a secret I'm mixing in the pot
Everything you want, you already got
This be the secret mixed in the pot
Everything you want, want
You already got, got
Everything you want, want
You already got, got
Everything you want, want
You already got, got
Everything you want, want
You already got, got
The more digging this grave
The more I'm digging my life
The more I'm digging this pain
The more I'm digging the mic
The more I'm looking for life
The more I'm looking for light
The more I'm mixing between
The more I carve with this mic
The more digging this grave
The more I'm digging my life
The more I'm digging this pain
The more I'm digging the mic
The more I'm looking for life
The more I'm looking for light
The more I'm mixing between
The more I carve with this mic
The more digging this grave
The more I'm digging my life
The more I'm digging this pain
The more I'm digging the mic
The more I'm looking for life

Song for the Winter Rade
In September, I shared a poem/song/prayer I called “Song for the Way Opening” after getting a message from some of my allies that I should be celebrating the movements of the Pleiades more intentionally. I’d followed the outline Morgan Daimler gave in their book Living Fairy, and made Daimler’s fairy cakes, and then the prayer in the book turned into a sung prayer to the tune of Thomas the Rhymer in my head, and, well. That was the subject of the blog.
This time, I intentionally worked out the poem/song/prayer, and I made an offering of nuts and whiskey, and I’ll be giving a little bit of the secular feast tomorrow as well, so I didn’t make fairy cakes this time.
The first two stanzas of the song are the same, and the last two stanzas are as well, except for the last line.
Song for the Winter Rade
I call to all you goodly wights, My kin and friends whoe’er shall be. All you who’d be my allies true, And come and walk this path with me. I call to all the Queens and Kings, Monarchs and Sov’reigns, all gentry near — If you would celebrate with me Tis time to come and join me here. Tonight the Queens will reach their height — At mid-night they’ll be standing still, Poised in the center of the sky And shining down on all they will.
Their fair blue light, it brightly burns: A torchlight for an open gate. The Fairy Rade will then emerge As seven Queen-Stars culminate.
Through the gate, and between worlds, The Queens will ride across our land — For our two worlds are intertwined, Like fingers lacing hand in hand.
As they ride past, may we be blessed, With token or with smile or nod, And may they take our offerings, As their refreshment while they’re abroad. A good word to the Fairy Rade, And may you never do us ill! Ride out along the fairy roads, Bringing with you Winter’s chill.
This time I’ve also pulled an omen to share: one rune and one ogham, to symbolize the two groups of fairy folk with whom I work most closely. I pulled Wunjo and Onn. Wunjo is a rune of joy and satisfaction, and my personal poem for it is “Joy in wealth is found when it is shared; joy in life is found in the happiness of those around you.” Onn is an ogham associated with the ash tree and gorse, and my personal kenning for it is “Onward Momentum”. So, as we move into the coming days, try to find joy, and reasons to keep going forward! I know this is a hard time of year for many people, as the light wanes (and complex family difficulties are exacerbated by the winter holidays), but there are still good things to be found and enjoyed.
I do have a Crow Calls post to make soon, too, but I wanted to do it separately, so that will probably be here in a couple days!

Happy Worm Moon in Libra ft a Lunar Eclipse on an Earth Ox day!
This phrase is just a mishmosh of so many beliefs, ways that humans make systems of classification to understand the super/natural world around us. How they inform how I move through this world. I'm trying to learn from Native American & Folk planting traditions, Astrology's self-agency, and Traditional Chinese Medicine of my blood-kin. These systems I use in application to theatre: in understanding who the heavens are in Shakespearean worlds, in emboldening myself when there is a flood in the theatre and the show must go on, and in fidning the pace I want to work in order to sustain my identity as an artist.
Sooo, lets break it down
/ Worm Moon / comes from the the Southern Native American tribes who notice how in this time of the seasons, earthworm castings appear as the ground thatws. This moon of March also has other names including: Crow (NNAt, the crows who signal the end of winter), Death (European, the srtat of spring signifying the end of the old year and the start of the new), Lenten (E, corresponds with Lent); full moon of Purim (Hebrew, that marks the Jewish deliverance from a royal death-decree) or Holi (Hindu, the month of Phalguna and the victory of good over evil with the start of spring); Māgha Pūjā (Buddhism, the creation of an ideal and exemplary community; aka Sangha Day, Buddhist All Saints Day), Medin Poya (Shri Lanka), Mid-Sha’ban (Islamic, eigth month)
/ (full) Moon in Libra / comes from the positionally of the full moon in the sky. This area of the sky is designated as the Libra House, the seventh in the European Astrological Zodiac. Libra is about balance.
/ Lunar Eclipse / is a solar event where the Earth is between the sun and the moon, casting Earth's shaddow and redness onto the moon. There are many beliefs of the Moon being attacked/eaten, a product of mathematical patterns, and the potential for salvation.
/ Earth Ox day / is the description of the March 26th day, in the Fire Rabbit Month and Wood Dragon Year. These are all Traditional Chinese classifications of the zodiac's animal and element that can be applied to years, months, days and hours (akin to European astrology)
How does our perspective imapct how we view the passing of events? Does the moon's phase cycle wax on and off in the same way in the southern hemisphere? With so many ways of thinking, which does mine fall into? How do we find peace in the dichotomy of information? What about theatre's cacophony am I discerning and distilling?
As promised, here are some sprouting seedlings in honor of the beginning of this eclipse season!

An Introduction, I suppose.
Tumblr media
Hi. I'm Aidoneus AKA Will/Willow. I'm a Wyvern, crow-hearted and cat-hearted. I also have a Skyrim heart-home.
This blog is mostly just to share my experiences as otherkin/hearted, and to reblog kin-related stuff. Might end up talking about hermeus mora a lot though.
I recently got a Dragon Cave account and would very much appreciate it if folks would go take a look at that.

(First written for From The Two Rivers, the first half of a YA reprint of The Eye of the World, and now seemingly available in front of the ebook edition (so you might be able to read it in the "preview now" on Amazon or your ebook retailer of choice, if you don't have it in your copy) as well as a few print editions, this was placed before the Dragonmount prologue. I feel that's too jarring for a first introduction, because it's 8-9 years ago, then 3000 years ago, then back to the present day. It doesn't work well in the other direction either, because it undercuts the tension (and the narrative connection) between the prologue and chapter 1. But, I really love this chapter, actually. It's a great insight into not just Egwene, but other characters we've been interacting with. So, I'm placing it after chapter 4, when we've met most of the relevant characters, or heard about them enough to recognize, and there's a bit of a lull in the story.)
We meet Egwene, who's with some of the other children in the Winespring Water river.
She was not here to play. At nine, she was carrying water for the first time, but she was going to be the best water-carrier ever.(1)
She wonders why she has to keep her hair long and wear it in a kerchief, when long hair is a sign of womanhood and she's years off from it yet.
Why did you have to keep doing something just because it had always been done that way?(2)
Downstream, the men are washing the sheep that will be sheared later. She's gathering water in her buckets when a raven lands nearby, watching some men washing sheep in the river nearby. Only, why would a raven watch the men when the sheep are the better targets? There are rumours that ravens and crows are the Dark One's eyes, but what would the Dark One need to see in the Two Rivers? That's silly talk.
An older boy, Kenley Ahan, tells her to get back to work. She gives him a level look she's seen older girls use, but it's not very effective. He gets back to his, pretending he's responsible about it, but she knows that won't last long. Still, she gets back to the water-carrying, because she really does want to be the best.
Farmers came from all around Emond’s Field for this, and village folk came out to help relatives. Everyone in the village had kith or kin of some sort on the farms. Shearing would be going on all across the Two Rivers, down at Deven Ride and up to Watch Hill. Not at Taren Ferry, of course. Many of the women wore shawls draped loosely over their arms and flowers in their hair, for the formality, and so did some of the older girls, though their hair was not in the long braid the women had. A few even wore dresses with embroidery around the neck, as if this really were a feastday. In contrast, most of the men and boys went coatless, and some even had their shirts unlaced. Egwene did not understand why they were allowed to do that. The women’s work was no cooler than the men’s.(3)
Egwene describes the jobs everyone does at shearing, from moving the sheep in and out of the pens, the shearing itself, sorting and baling, and preparing and serving food for everyone. Shearing is one of just five times a year when the whole community comes together, so the crowd is huge.
Taking care not to run into any of her sisters, who often treat her as a baby, she tells herself she's not looking for anyone else. Of course, it's a bit protest too much. She sees Kenley try to steal a honeycake, and get punished for it, and feels satisfied that he won't be giving orders again soon.
On her way back to the river to refill her bucket, Egwene sees Perrin with his family talking to the local smith, who says he's a fine lad, he'll do a great job. Egwene watches Perrin playing with his youngest sister, and his other sister sneaks up on Egwene and asks why she's watching Perrin when everyone knows she's going to marry Rand someday. Egwene notices more ravens, insults the girl,(4) and gets back to the business of water carrying.
Egwene then nearly runs into one of her sisters, telling off a Coplin for trying to interfere with the wool sorting she's doing. This makes Egwene think of how all her sisters treat her like a child. One of them even takes books Egwene wants to read, calling them "too complex" for her. Egwene particularly loves reading The Travels of Jain Farstrider, dreaming about seeing all the places he did.
She notes Nynaeve, the Wisdom's apprentice, bandaging a cut someone acquired from wool shears. Nynaeve was orphaned a few years ago, and taken apprentice much earlier than is usual for a Wisdom, instead of being sent to live with other relatives. She finishes the bandage, but the Wisdom undoes it, and looks disappointed for some reason Egg can't fathom.(5) Nyn tugs at her braid, a nervous habit of hers, although she could be trying to draw attention to the fact that she's been considered a woman grown for almost a year, even if she's still an apprentice.
Nearby Egg sees yet more ravens, watching the men and the boys. Just as she's about to ask the Wisdom what it might mean, Nyn sneaks up on her and asks if Egg has work to be doing. Somehow since last fall, she's known where Egg is without looking, and Egg wishes she'd stop.
Egg curtsies, and as she leaves, finds herself face to face with another of her sisters, Elisa. She's folding fleece, badly, and Egg thinks it's because she's older than Nynaeve by a year, but the Women's Circle still hasn't let her braid her hair. Egg points out another girl, Calle Coplin, who's even older with her hair unbraided, and Elisa gets deeply embarrassed and tells her to leave the adults to their work.
Well, with that, Egg stalks away, refills her bucket, and goes in search of Perrin and Mat, Rand's friends, for no reason at all, nope, she just has a question she needs to ask them, that's why she sneaks up on their hiding place. And she finds them, all three plus some other boys about their age. Egg hides around the corner from them and thinks about marriage customs and adulthood, and how she really wants to journey before she settles down, even if Rand is a kind boy.
The lads start talking about how to get into some mischief, and then someone comes and summons them all on behalf of the mayor. Egwene follows casually, and it turns out he promised to tell them a story. Only, they ask for a story about a false Dragon, and he doesn't know any, so he asks Tam, Rand's father, if he does. Tam offers to tell a story about the real Dragon, from the Age of Legends, three thousand years ago. Cenn Buie says some stories shouldn't be told, shouldn't even be known, but Bran insists it's only a story, what harm can it do?
To paraphrase, three thousand years ago in the Age of Legends(6) there were great cities full of huge buildings, and vehicles powered by magic that could carry people faster than horses can run. They didn't even remember war, and had no sickness they couldn't cure. And then the Dark One touched the world, and war came that covered the whole world in shadow. So came trollocs and myrddraal, and human darkfriends and even some Aes Sedai who went over to the dark and became the Forsaken.
Egwene puzzles at this, because some of the Forsaken were men, and they couldn't have been Aes Sedai, could they?(7)
The story goes on that Lews Therin Telamon, the Dragon himself, gathered an army of 100 men who marched on the Dark One's stronghold, and enough of them fought through to seal the hole in the Dark One's prison. And again Egwene puzzles, because didn't the stories say that the Dragon had broken the world? How could he have saved it and broken it?(8)
The story wraps up there, and Perrin asks what a dragon is.(9) Tam admits he doesn't know, and he's not sure even the Aes Sedai know what a dragon is. Still, it's nothing to do with today, so the boys are told to get back to work. Egwene is startled to realize there are more ravens in the trees than she's ever seen before. Worse, one of them is staring straight at her. She stares at it until it flies off with the others, and then she gets back to being the best water-carrier ever.
Egwene had to carry water again the next year, which was a great disappointment to her, but once again she tried to be the best. If you were going to do a thing, you might as well do the best you could. It must have worked, because the year after that she was allowed to help with the food, a year early! She set herself a new goal, then: to be allowed to braid her hair younger than anybody ever. She did not really think the Women’s Circle would allow it, but a goal that was easy was no goal at all. She stopped wanting to hear stories from the grownups, though she would have liked to hear a gleeman, but she still liked to read of distant lands with strange ways, and dreamed of seeing them. The boys stopped wanting stories, too. She did not think they even read very much. They all grew older, thinking their world would never change, and many of those stories faded to fond memories while others were forgotten, or half so. And if they learned that some of those stories really had been more than stories, well . . . The War of the Shadow? The Breaking of the World? Lews Therin Telamon? How could it matter now? And what had really happened back then, anyway?
=====
(1) Egwene is going to be The Best at anything she tries to do, or else the universe will have to pay. (2) And, our Egg is not a traditionalist. (3) Because your author wanted to make a particular point about your hometown being very conservative-traditional-having deep roots in the location. We've seen that with how many times things have been repeated and how many times people have said that's just the way it's always been. You, Egwene, may have been born here, but I think you can already see that you don't really belong. (4) In case you don't follow the logic here, my best guess, as someone who was once a 9 year old girl, is that Egg's embarrassed as all get out. She does have a crush on Rand, and they have practically been promised since infancy, even though there are many suitable kids of the right ages. But, she also thinks in this chapter about wanting to see the places Jain Farstrider did. She might not be fully aware of it consciously, but while part of her loves her home and her role in it, part of her also wants to journey beyond, and not be held back by decisions made before she was able to get involved. You can want something and still resent being pressured into choosing it, and resent any of that being noticed by someone else who's ready to embarrass you as soon as say hello. (5) Now, how odd. Do you think Nynaeve's that bad a medic? Egg doesn't think in that direction when she watches it. (6) Well, it's nice to finally have a timeline to work from, so I don't have to pretend I don't know when the Dragonmount prologue took place anymore. Oh, there's debate about the EXACT duration and whether the Third Age began before or after the Breaking, or even if it began with the great war, but we don't need to address that here. Plenty of places to talk about it once you've finished the series and can go find the full spoiler communities. (7) If the BOH in the prologue was to be believed, it was men who could channel who did most of the breaking, since they went mad and unleashed their power without control, while the "sisters" were still safe. It wouldn't be too much of a stretch to suggest that Aes Sedai used to mean all channelers, and still means all not insane channelers. So perhaps Aes Sedai did break the world, but that got interpreted through three thousand years of semantic drift where the meaning of the term changed dramatically. A lot can change in how we interpret the words and prophecies of an era over the course of thousands of years. (8) How, indeed? This is probably the main reason why this fits before Dragonmount in publication order, technically speaking. Because this story leads into learning a little bit of the detail and the nuance. Not a lot, because book one of fifteen, but enough to tantalize the senses. We know that he led the Hundred Companions against the Dark One, because one of the Dark One's servants reminded him so. (Do you think that means the BOH was a Forsaken?) And we know that the men who could channel lost their minds and their control and broke the world, the way LTT broke his wife and his home and made that mountain. (9) Passing along information without context can be dangerous for just this reason. You never know what will be lost or made up in the game of telephone.

awesome! if you've the time, i'd like to get either a song playlist or video playlist for a season 2 origins smp philza kin! either would be fine with me /gen, whichever is easiest! (or hell, if you want, you could do both, don't let me stop you haha! /lh)
music-wise, comfy music along the lines of jack johnson's work would be preferred. big fan of his work, and that sort of relaxed, mellow music is my favorite. indie folk music is also fine, or other stuff with acoustic guitar (my son, wilbur, played, so it's a comforting sound). if more high-tempo, maybe songs with a similar sort of sound and vibe to "kingdom dance" from the tangled ost.
video-wise, i'm not too picky! i'd love some sort of like... i dunno, cleaning house content (preferably no talking), mountain surfing/drone footage that simulates flight, anything with crows or ravens, tavern or pub ambience... stuff like that! i'm big on crowcore and adventurecore vibes, if that helps at all.
sorry if that's too much! figure it's better to over-explain than under-explain, yeah? haha!
