June Prompts Chapter 27 Letter
AO3
How do I even go about this? How do I tell you all you need to know? All I won’t  be around to tell you? So much is left unspoken despite all the advice I have given you over your life.

I can see you reading this, with a chuckle. You are probably recalling all I said to you. All the little pieces of motherly wisdom. Don’t go outside with wet hair. Always carry money for cabs and pay phones. It is easier to tidy as you go. Don’t get fat. All this and so much more I have already said.

So, my darling Brianna, let me say this. I love you. You are and shall ever be, the best part of me. I regret nothing I have sacrificed for you and would do it all again.

You have his strength and stubbornness. They will serve you well. Be open to love but not a fool. Let no man treat you any less then the magnificent woman you are.

My daughter, I will miss you terribly. Don’t grief for me. Picture me alive and ever so happy.

Thankless: Of Ruined Holidays and Changing Hearts
Canon-compliant, showverse, missing scene(s). Oneshot.
Thanksgiving 1960 and 1772 - Frank's POV, then Jamie's.
Two very different husbands, two very different family dynamics, the same unexpected wrench in the holiday plans.
Tumblr media
1960 - Boston, Massachusetts
The phone rang just as Brianna was setting the table.
I shot Claire a warning look that went completely unheeded as she shouldered past me in a swish of silk and clacking heels. The instinct to call after her still rose to my lips after all these years; the knowledge that the breath would be wasted kept it there.
“Hello, this is Doctor Randall…”
Our daughter froze instantly, the last salad fork hovering inches over the placemat.
“How many? Nancy, slow down. How many wounded?”
Just like that, I watched the light drain from my twelve year old’s face. She masked it well, brave girl; unlike her mother, she had a talented poker face. Quietly and without fanfare, Brianna took the cutlery, plate and wine glass from the third place setting and returned them to the china cabinet.
I crossed the room slowly and laid a hand on her shoulder, heavy with unspoken understanding. It wasn’t the first holiday her mother had ruined with her selfishness, her pigheaded insistence upon putting career over family. Bree flashed me a wan smile and reached up to squeeze my fingers appreciatively.
“More mashed potatoes for us, huh?” She tried for levity, and would have pulled it off had she been trying to fool anyone but me.
“We won’t leave a single bite,” I promised sotto vocce.
Drawing in a breath through her nose and releasing it in a sharp sigh, Bree clasped her hands together as she turned back to the table. “Shall we? Or do we wait for her to come back in and—”
“Darling, I’m so sorry…” Right on cue, Claire appeared in the doorway to the kitchen, already slinging her purse over one shoulder, the car keys jangling in her opposite hand. “There’s been a terrible accident on the Longfellow Bridge—”
“Yeah, I’m sure there was. It’s always something, right?” Even I was surprised by the venom in Bree’s voice; day by day, the little girl eager to defend her mother’s choices was yielding to the dark cynicism of an adolescent. Normally, I would have chided her for taking a tone — it was unbecoming of a young lady — but I couldn’t deny that a part of me had been anticipating the day when Brianna finally learned to stand up for herself. It had been far too long that she’d dutifully shouldered the burden of her mother’s negligence.
Wounded, wide, golden eyes blinked twice before Claire took a half-step forward. “I understand,” she said with a physician’s practiced calm, “that it’s disappointing when I’m called away on the holidays. Trust me, this isn’t how I wanted to spend my Thanksgiving either.”
“So why are you?!” our daughter demanded, throwing her hands up and letting them flop back at her sides. “Why does it always have to be you? Why can’t the other surgeons take the call this time?”

Wednesday 100: Fairytales
An arranged marriage was never what Jamie had imagined for himself. His parents’ love was that of a fairytale, even before they’d lost Mam and Da’s stories of their life became more embellished every time he told them. He’d seen it in every kiss, every jest, every impassioned argument they had and he aspired to the same. When honor (and Dougal) called for him to marry Claire, part of him thought he’d have to give up that dream; then the cloak gave way to her gleaming dress and their eyes locked and he knew their own epic was already unfolding.

Will we ever see how Douxie and Zoe met Claire in First Frost? Because I would love to read it!
I actually have a one shot (or two shot) slotted away just for that. It didn’t really fit anywhere in First Frost by the time I wrote it, so I set it aside.
It would definitely wedge between parts of the first chapter, but that’s Jim’s pov and he had no idea what was going on, he didn’t even know Claire well at that point.

“fixing” is actually a double-edged sword
The most discussed problem is the dynamics of who is obligated to care for who in terms of social privilege and power and also--even if, say, it’s a same gender couple--the harm of one person feeling they have to do that for another generally. That is important to discuss and covered quite a bit; I’ve pointed out my pov on the nuances of it here. (EDIT and I’ve updated with some “fixee” pov stuff here).
But “fixing him/her/them” is also bad for the “him/her/them”. It’s potentially dangerous and harmful to the person “being fixed”.
Being an amateur and poking around in someone's trauma and mental illness can actually  make things worse for them - it can cause real harm to someone. Even trained therapists can make things worse for someone by accident. It’s a known risk of therapy.
And this is (lol I’ve been trying not to say this for weeks!!) why I find C/laire kind of personally disquieting tbqh. Playing  therapist without a license on someone is kinda messed up! It's not just that women  "fixing" men is anti-feminist - that is true - it's that a non-professional using a  personal relationship to fiddle around in someone's head is also messed.  up and, frankly, dangerous.
I’m not “anti” her as a character - all the characters are flawed, this is a dynamic people fall into for various reasons, it’s as understandable a flaw/mistake as any of the things the other characters do. But there’s a ton of discussion of how it’s unfair to the “fixer” - but not really any about how unfair and potentially dangerous it is to the “fixee.” (Imo cultural ableism plays into why the violence toward the “fixee” is rarely (if ever?) discussed as a problem: neurodivergent people are often considered, by default, as problems to be solved rather than people, so the way it’s dangerous and harmful to a “fixee” is just - erased/ignored. The attitude is that they should be grateful a normal, healthy person is bothering themselves at all to be so generous as to try to “fix” them!). And she gets treated like she’s made of sweetness and light, and not deeply flawed, when what I saw of her was -- deeply flawed, like the rest of the characters.
I’m sorry but this is, in fact, a way that neurotypical partners can abuse neurodivergent people 🤷‍♀️ (shall I quote the stats on the high risk mentally ill people are at for being abused????? And how the (false!) idea that mentally ill people are more likely to be abusers plays into the culture around that?) all while coming across like a selfless hero to other neurotypicals for being willing to “fix” this “broken” person -- and yet how often is it ever discussed that that can be part of it??
I don’t think she was consciously doing it. But it’s dangerous even if not done intentionally abusively and some people do it to abuse on purpose. And they have so much room to cloak their behavior because of how the narrative of the double-sided nature of this isn’t widely discussed.
I’m sure she didn’t mean it that way precisely as a character - but IMO part of why she’s part of what gives Carmy a panic attack is that he interpreted her as wanting him to perform/share being unwell with her and then--after she said platitudes like “nobody’s counting shoes”--perform being all better and “fixed” for her.
That’s an incredibly draining performance to feel you have to give.

June Prompts Chapter 29 Free
AO3
How horrible a person am I that what I feel at his death is free. He was my first husband, my first lover. He took me back when I was carrying another man’s child. Yet…

He wanted to take Bree! One of the last things he left me of Jamie outside my ring. He wouldn’t let me mention him, not even to myself, without feeling guilt.

Oh! I can think of him now! I can say his name! Tell Bree! Maybe. Just maybe.

I am free as horribly as it came. I have my freedom. Now what am I to do with it?

<- sometimes waits outside the Goldenrod Game Corner until she sees someone walk out with a (likely poached) Dratini.
(After a 'run-in' with the Blessed User of Dragon Pokemon, gamblers wisely opt not to keep their Dratini anymore. In fact, nearly all of them even donate their prize directly to the Gym Leader for a proper rehoming and release back in Blackthorn. How nice of them--Clair must be so persuasive!!)
