(and way more TYK designs below!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here it is! My personal designs of the (mostly) full TYK cast! What I mainly learned from this: TYK has a lot more characters than expected, haha.
My idea was mainly to get a clearer image, for myself, of all the people appearing or being mentioned in the book (and btw, a big chunk of the characters above died before the story even started and don't even get a line, but, you know...). One of my guidelines was, everyone has to look interesting, has to look like the main character of their own story. TYK is pretty much a story about side characters... so if noone is a main character, everyone is, no? (...does that even work? lol) Some of these designs were inspired by SHL, because it being the first one I saw, it of course left an impression in my mind. The rest is essentially taken from the few descriptions we get in the book, and my own imagination (plus some help from pinterest for the clothing). Rong Changqing is 100% inspired from @tbgkaru-woh depiction of him.
One noteworthy thing: the giant dog is too big. I thought it was supposed to be the size of a big horse, but it's actually the size of a pony... woops. Now, additionally:
Tumblr media
The protags families! Wen Ruyu and Gu Miaomiao had to look heroic because that's pretty much what their characters are about. The traditional Wuxia story heroes that marked the legend. Conversely, the Zhou family has to be as plain and normal as possible, haha. ZZS says, in QY, that he's often called "Zhou San" (=Zhou three), which means he's the third child in his family. Since I like the idea of him being the youngest, I only gave him an older brother (who will inherit the position of head of the family and thus justify ZZS being able to leave for a shady remote sect) and an older sister. And as another bonus:
Tumblr media
Hehehe. So these are... let's say, the men in ZZS' life, before WKX.
- Jiuxiao, of course, because I'm convinced ZZS had feelings for him
- Huang Xu, an OC developed with Bichen (son of a HLZ supporter, whose family ZZS infiltrated for a while --as Su Yan-- to try and sway them towards HLY's cause ((Su Yan's "Yan" is the same "Yan" as in Zhen Yan, just as a little nod to SHL))) - Zhu Ai, a magistrate OC, developed with Moose and Bichen, who's deeply infatuated with ZZS --only knowing him as that one guy who handles imperial guard watch tours and trains guards--
-and one guard I just like to imagine having a crush on him too. I started working on some guy from WKX's childhood too, but I feel like WKX's past is such a huge can of worms, I'll save all of that for later, haha.

If you ever want a rec for a Chinese historical drama, I'm not an expert but I have seen a lot of them.
My general all round recs are Empresses in the Palace (also known as the Legend of Zhen Huan) for classic palace drama, with a satisfying end.
I feel so spicy about this drama, its so good. Zhen Huan character of all time.
Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace, which is probably my favourite I think? Zhou Xun, who plays Ruyi is astounding, very subtle and understated and emotive at the same time.
The Story of Ming Lan is so good, it's all about family and rising against circumstance. Ming Lan is a joy of a character, she's so clever and tough behind this delicate front, and she has such rage in her.
And Oh My General for being wildly queer while resolutely heterosexual in the weirdest ways.
What if a jock dated a theatre kid, but the jock was a female soldier who has been living as a man to lead an army, and the theatre kid was a spoiled imperial family member who has had nothing expected of him ever.
What if she was a goofball and he was a prissy bitch but then he falls in love with her because she's the only person whose ever looked at him and expected him to be something!

Just finished Zhen Hun Vol. 2 and I don’t even have the words to describe how I’m feeling, but I’ll try.
First of all, I don’t care for the drama. I only watched the first couple episodes, but with the EXTREME departure from the premise of the novel and the not great casting (the actors are all good actors; but with a few exceptions, those are NOT the characters I pictured when reading the novel) I just couldn’t continue it. So as far as the drama goes, I haven’t seen it, and this post will be about the novel only.
As far as protagonists go, I LOVE Zhao Yunlan. I love that he pretends to be facetious and shallow, but actually cares a lot about the people (and yao) he deems as his. He’s also extremely competent in a way that’s extremely fun to read, because the reader is usually in on it. I like him more than Chang Geng from Sha Po Lang/Stars of Chaos, but as the official translation for Faraway Wanderers hasn’t even been announced yet, I can’t compare him to Zhou Zishu as I’ve only watched (and LOVED) Word of Honor.
I also ADORE the (as-of-yet unconfirmed but come on) side ship of Chu Shuzhi and Guo Changcheng. I might like them more than the main pairing. I love Changcheng. The narrative constantly paints him as a coward, but he always stands his ground despite being afraid, which really makes him extremely brave. He’s just good, and I love how Priest hints around his love towards Shuzhi in a expert example of “show-not-tell.” Even when Shuzhi could be seconds away from killing him, he never for a second loses his belief that Shuzhi is a good person.
And Shuzhi, in his own way, realizes and returns that devotion. It’s such an understated, vague way of writing a side pairing and yet I eat up every scene they have together.
Now. The ending. I don’t know why the last 30 pages or so destroyed me, considering that Yunlan figures out a lot of it in the 1st and 2nd novels anyway, but his backstory was so fucking sad. I love how Priest writes characters that COULD be the typical “OP main character chosen one” archetype, but then entirely swerves the things that would push that character into Mary Sue territory.
I LOVE how this series deals with Chinese mythology and ancient literature. I think that’s why it rubbed me so wrong that the drama just…threw all that out the window and made it about aliens. Zhen Hun is one of the most involved danmei I’ve read when it comes to actual Chinese mythology. Even Thousand Autumns, which I adore because it’s setting is a REAL period in ancient Chinese history with side characters that actually existed, doesn’t delve so much into the actual mythology.
Zhen Hun is a danmei, but it isn’t really a cultivation novel in the traditional sense, and I think that’s what really grabbed me. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE a traditional cultivation setting. But something about the way Priest wrote Zhen Hun is so magnetic, perfectly blending mythology and a modern setting.
I can’t wait for Vol. 3.

We Best Love: Episode 1 [BLIND REACTION]
So, I have a girl friend who is fan of this show and finally convinced me to watch it. Did I make a mistake? Who knows.
But I collected my thoughts and decided to do this. Well, this is gonna be long so get ready. I'll edit with my afterthoughts (note, EAW means Edited After Watching [the episode]) once I'm finished with season 1, or maybe before. We'll see.
Ok, let's begin!
Tumblr media
Welp, he's dead, Great start!
Tumblr media
You sure this is a romance? This looks more like an intervention.
So, Zhau Shu Yi. I'll guess he's the main character or one of the main characters. I'll try to remember his name [furiously takes notes]
The one gremlin with No Name is asking Zhau why they think it's important for him to win. As a Bakugou fan, I'm excited to hear his answer.
"I push myself forward, so that you can see me." Just one minute and it's already too ‎fluffy for my heart
Tumblr media
So, they're fighting underwater. They saw too much anime, istg. Anygays, that tells me these are actual kids (well, the actors may be older, but I'll suppose they're interpreting kids. I bet they're highschoolers).
"LESSON 1: LET'S SUFFOCATE." Okay, wow, great title. So maybe my joke about him being dead wasn't that far off.
Chilhood friends to lovers is such a nice trope, oml, go for it, boy. Be a man and go get your man!
Fang Zhen Wen and Jiang Yu Xin. Hope I remember that. Are those the other two friends?
Tumblr media
Me, trying to be smooth
He has a fan club
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You gals are fans of a swimmer. What did you expect? You were gonna run out of things to offer him eventually.
So he's Zhou Shu Yi. [keeps taking notes] I'll try to remember that.
Bro, how did he fell? You're supposed to be a pro, Zhou, your gals will be dissapointed.
Tumblr media
He sounds way to chill for someone who's almost drowning.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
NO YOU'RE NOT????
"How are they talking underwater?" "It's the rainbow connection, don't question it."
Tumblr media
My Shojo Academia
Tumblr media
Gao Shi De is me receiving gifts (socks and a mug) on Christmas
Anygays, Gao Shi De and Zhou Shu Yi seem to have this kind of rivalry since they were basically on diapers. They came out of the womb wanting to throw hands with each other.
But Gao Shi De seems to be the naturally gifted, always on top, and so Zhou Shu Yi developed some sort of inferiority complex, or so it looks like. (Wow, this reminds me of yet ANOTHER story and ️‍🌈 ship that started in a similar way -if you know, you know-)
"Why did you fall-" THAT'S WHAT I'M SAYING, LIKE, WHY
Are you telling me that the actual reason he fell was because of the big gay panic- I mean, rivalry, that he has against Shi De?
Tumblr media
OMG HE CUT HIS FINGER! I've seen enough shojo (and shonen) to know what this means. Where's Shi De to kiss it better?
Tumblr media
You're not Shi De.
"I'm not crying." He's so Bakugou, istg
Now he's blaming his misfortunes on Gao Shi De. Bruh, the only thing he did was exist.
Oh, so they're in university? Nice to know.
His friends are trying to understand his language, I feel them, literally had no idea what he was talking about other than "Gao Shi De".
I was gonna say they seem like good kids and very supportive friends. The latter is truth. The former...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This poor unfortunate soul keeps falling for their tricks. Gao Shi De it's not that dumb, tho.
Oh gods, he plays the piano, he knows what them girls (and boys) like.
So after having a whole ass "Corpse Bride" moment they went back to bickering
Tumblr media
They should make out, ngl. [EAW: Bruh...]
Tumblr media
Gay people can't just ask someone out, they have to be very extra about it. Shu Yi is an example of that.
He's been bullying Shi De since they were kids, he's oblivious af.
Boy, just confess, it'll save you and your friends' time.
Tumblr media
I want to know his name, he's such a mood.
While Shu Yi can't stop thinking about Shi De, important things are happening.
That girl from the beginning [EAW: Yu Xin, her name is Yu Xin, you big disaster] is asking Fang Zhen Wen out and he's all (,,>﹏<,,)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At least she's honest, nothing more important than THAT.
Tumblr media
Shu Yi heard about the proposal and went all fake-smile on them and then left.
"Is Shu Yi OK?" Idk, girl, you tell me, I thought you three were friends.
They're telling him is dangerous to run down the stairs. I think he'll live, but I won't forgive him for dropping his backpack on the floor. Bro, get your stuff.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He's gonna start singing Beat on It.
Annnnnd he went back to the pool. Man, this is were it all started. The flashbacks from episode 1- oh wait.
Tumblr media
He's actually making me feel bad, ngl. Maybe it's the acting, or that I understand the whole "why not me" situation. Mitski taught me well.
It's hard. Friendships and relationships are messy, specially when someone is still young. You also have to deal with a lot of feelings being even more irrational than they should, and the inferiority complex definitely doesn't help, making you feel so insecure about yourself, and as if no matter what you're always going to lack something.
I might barely know them but at the end of the day it's no one's fault, really. You can't control how you feel, or how others feel.
MOOOOOVING ON. You know who could help? HEY, SHI DE!
[EAW: He actually came, that mf]
Wait, is he actually? Bruh, did he jumped on the pool?
Why are teens like this. He could've just dropped the collar. Him and his dramatic gay ass.
Tumblr media
Speaking of dramatic gay asses.
Tumblr media
My guy, this is episode 1, couldn't you just wait until... episode 4, at least?
Dont give me that bs about cpr. The surface was RIGHT THERE!
AND THAT'S THE END OF EPISODE 1. I kinda wanna know if he'll give him the lame excuse about cpr.
I'm dying for more tension, Yu Xin knows what I'm talking about, she also has to finish her thesis.
So, that went quicker than I thought. It was compelling tho. I still need more to form solid opinions, but I´ll bite, I'm interested to know how this develops.
Anyways, whoever reading this (cough cough, bossman), see ya later. I'll watch episode 2 after this.

best cdramas I’ve watched since the last one of these posts in 2021 (also some not so good + some upcoming)
I’ve been too busy to make lists, so I’m leaving out every drama I dropped
Luoyang (watch on iQIYI VIP) adapted from the novel of the same title by Ma Bo Yong (马伯庸), starring Huang Xuan, Wang Yibo, and Song Qian. The Longest Day in Chang'an vibes, but like, lighter and more colorful in every sense of the word. So many excellent female characters. Moves at a good clip for 39 episodes without stuttering. The cast is out of this world. 9/10
The Longest Day in Chang'an (watch on Amazon Prime | watch on Viki) starring Lei Jia Yin and Yi Yang Qian Xi. Fckn masterpiece. The cinematography in this thing is a joy to behold. Visually stunning. Not a drama you can glance at occasionally and still catch the threads. Had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. 10/10
Sword Snow Stride (watch on WeTV VIP | watch on Viki) based on the xuanhuan novel The Snowy Path of the Heroic Blade by 烽火戏诸侯 starring Zhang Ruoyun and Hu Jun. I have a soft spot for Zhang Ruoyun so I was gonna watch this to the end even if it sucked. Luckily, it didn’t. Still, it’s sort of a run-of-the-mill adventure journey story, where the hero always wins against all odds. It does a good job filling that empty hole in your life that Joy of Life left behind. The cast is stellar, and the plot stable enough for enjoyment. 7/10
The Long Ballad (watch on Viki |  watch on YouTube) based on wuxia manhua by 夏达 starring Dilraba Dilmurat and Wu Lei. Dilraba Dilmurat is a fckn goddess. Not gonna lie, I watched this whole thing just for her. I’m not particularly crazy about Wu Lei as an actor, but he was amazing in this role. The plot meanders occasionally, and there are some episodes I’ve watched at 1.25 speed. Still, one of the better romances out there. 7/10
Marvelous Women (watch on Viki) starring Jiang Qinqin and Zhang Huiwen. This was glorious in every sense of the word. So many brilliant women. So many brainless men. In-depth study of duty, honor, loyalty and love. I laughed, I cried, I lay on the floor and stared at the ceiling. Beautiful story, exquisitely told. 10/10
The Theatre Stories (watch on iQIYI VIP) starring  Qin Kaixuan and Zhao Xiaotang. Fun, lighthearted joy of a story. The best comedy I’ve seen all year. Love it to fckn pieces. 9/10
Honorable Mentions
The Story of MingLan (watch on iQIYI VIP | watch on Viki | watch on YouTube) adapted from the novel of the same title by Guan Xin Ze Luan (关心则乱), starring Zhao Liying, Feng Shaofeng, and Zhu Yilong. Cao Cuifen is also in this, for those who fckn adore this woman as much as I do. First of all, Zhao Liying is magic on screen, regardless of the role. The romance in this doesn’t meander, even if the other story lines occasionally do. First two thirds were very enjoyable. Last third I could’ve done without. I believe I called this drama “the terrible, wonderful lives of women,” and I still hold to that. 6/10
Watched, but nothing to write home about
The Rebel Princess (watch on Amazon Prime | watch on Viki) adapted from the novel "Emperor's Conquest" (帝王业) by Mei Yu Zhe (寐语者) starring Zhang Ziyi and Zhou Yiwei. 5/10
The Legend of Condor Heroes (2017) (watch on iQIYI VIP) starring Li Yitong and Yang Xuwen. Meng Ziyi is also in this adaptation. 4/10
God of Lost Fantasy (watch on Amazon Prime | watch on Viki | watch on YouTube) adapted from the novel “Ancient Godly Monarch” by Jing Wu Hen starring Sheng Yilun and Wang Ziwen. 3/10
Legend of Zhen Huan (watch on Amazon Prime) starring Sun Li and Chen JianBin. 5/10
Mirror: A Tale of Twin Cities (watch on Viki) adapted from the novel "Jing - Shuang Cheng" (镜·双城) by Cang Yue (沧月) starring Li Yifeng and Chen Yuqi. 4/10
Still waiting on:
Immortality - based on danmei novel The Husky and His White Cat Shizun by 肉包不吃肉 starring Chen Feiyu and Luo Yunxi
Winner Is King - based on the danmei novel Sha Po Lang by Priest starring Tan Jianci and Chen Zheyuan
Step By Step Lotus - based on historical novel Return to Ming Dynasty as Prince by 月关 starring Zhang Binbin and Luo Yunxi
Eternal Faith - based on danmei novel Heaven Official's Blessing by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu starring Zhai Xiaowen and Zhang Linghe
Thousand Autumns - based on danmei novel of the same name by Meng Xi Shi - cast unknown
Joy Of Life Season 2 - based on wuxia novel of the same name by 猫腻 starring Zhang Ruoyun and Li Qin
A League of Nobleman - based on danmei novel The Society of Four Leaves by Da Feng Gua Guo starring Song Weilong and Jing Boran
Flying Phoenix - based on danmei novel of the same name by 風弄 starring Dai Jingyao and Shu Yaxin
The Story of the Bat - based on danmei novel Bat by Feng Nong starring Mao Zijun and Zhang Yao
The Longest Promise - based on xianxia novel Zhu Yan by 沧月 starring Xiao Zhan, Ren Min, and Zhang Yunlong

So! I’ve made a fic rec list of what’s fast becoming my fave type of SHL!WenZhou fic, which I don’t really know what to call but they’re like. Fics that deep dive the WenZhou traumatized brain juices with bonus orgasms? Or something?
Idk but these fics all fit together in my mind as the same genre for whatever reason and I love them.
Please mind the tags of each fic cuz some of them are quite dark and heavy
Let Me Love You by hansbekhart/ @hansbekhart
It had been so easy to imagine, because Wen Kexing has spent a lot of time steeped in his own fantasies: spending his days growing things with his own hands, assembling them into things that would nurture bodies instead of break them. Maybe A-Xiang and her stupid xiao-Cao would join them. Maybe he would be happy forever, here with A-Xu, their hair growing white together. It seemed so simple: all both of them had to do was stay.
Could one return to paradise, after doing such things? Was it really possible to stay?
Zhou Zishu seemed to think so. His hands were as bloody as Wen Kexing’s and yet here he was, in his soft rumpled clothes, his soft rumpled hair, lazing around before meals as if it was only his right that they be served to him. This land, where the flowers bloomed in all four seasons, had happily welcomed the cruel leader of Tian Chuang back into itself. This idiot didn’t even know where the key to all his money was, and yet he was still ready to hand it all over to Wen Kexing to do as he liked.
Wen Kexing watches Zhou Zishu fuss around, and thinks of saying, where I come from, they don’t really call me Philanthropist Wen, you know.
Local killer struggles with the prospect that he could happily retire (and also PTSD but you know)

Any way you want your pleasure, he thinks, take it from me.

Sometimes you gotta have unhinged marathon sex to celebrate the fact that you and the love of your life aren’t dead
go the hard way with me by Anonymous
The first time, they were in Yueyang.
Wen Kexing had passed the day spending Zhou Zishu's money, flitting from bauble to bauble in the marketplace, coveting this, tasting that, smiling at him through honey-stained lips and asking with that coy look in his eyes,
"Would you begrudge me this small joy, A-Xu? Wouldn't you rather see me happy?"
Happy. What did Zhou Zishu know about that? Happiness was not something to be bought or sold. Happiness wasn't a painted scroll. It wasn't something to be captured by ink on paper in a beautiful word, a burst of color.
But perhaps it could be something fleeting and melodious. The clear trill of a xiao under moonlight, sweet as rainwater on new spring leaves. Or perhaps it was the wrecked sounds that issued from Wen Kexing's mouth when Zhou Zishu fucked him that night.
Five times Zhou Zishu makes Wen Kexing cry during sex.
Absolutely gut-wrenching

Completed 'Surname' Polls
This is where I take several characters from different Chinese media (mostly cnovels and cdrama) and run a poll on which one is the 'best'. What does best mean? It's up to you! Whether you love them, are intrigued by their characters, love to hate them, or they're your '2 second blorbos whose personality you made up wholesale', these are all reasons for you to vote for your favs!
NB: the surnames are not exactly the same in all the cases, as often they will be a different character. I am, however, grouping them all together otherwise things got more complicated.
This post is for the polls which have finished running and can no longer be voted in (since I have realised that I'm quickly approaching the limit for hyperlinks in the original masterlist).
If you want to see the currently live polls, they can be found here

War God: A Compendium
Figured I have to finally make a post for A War God From Another World so that readers (mainly *I*) aren't going crazy with all the worldbuilding that's just become a monster to manage. This will get updated as the fic progresses (since I'm already brainstorming for the next major arc lol).
Cang Qiong
*Note: the previous generation of peak lords use 心 ("heart") for their titles.
Qing Jing Peak Lord - Jiang Xinqin - 蔣心琴 ("zither")
Bai Zhan Peak Lord - Wang Xinying - 王心櫻 ("cherry")
Qian Cao Peak Lord - Zhou Xinbei - 周心北 (“north")
Qiong Ding Peak Lord - Huang Xinwen - 黃心文 ("literature")
An Ding Peak Lord - Han Xinjing - 韓心精 (“refined")
Liu Qingge - Liu Kang* - 柳康 ("peaceful/healthy/bountiful")
Shang Qinghua - Shang Zhen - 尚真 ("genuine" lol)
Wei Qingwei - Wei Zhixin - 魏志信 ("purpose" and "trust")
Mu Qingfang - Mu Liwei - 木歷維 ("era" and "thought")
Qian He City Arc
Tang Wenzhao - 唐問曌 ("to ask" and "to illuminate/reflect")
Guo Lexin - 郭樂心 ("joyful heart")
Guo Shirong** - 郭实荣 ("truth" and "honorable")
Gongyi Meiyu - 公仪媄宇 (“beautiful” and “universe/roof”)
Tianlang-jun - “Wei Tian” - 魏天 (“sky”)
Other Side Characters
Fan Ping - 範平 ("peaceful")
Chu Zhouyi - 楚周義 ("cycle" and "justice")
Shuang’er / Shuang-jie / Madam Shuang - 霜儿 (“frost”)
Chen Huan’er - 陳焕儿 (“lustrous”)
Location Names
Qian He City - 千河城 (“thousand rivers”)
Jin Hua*** - 金花 (“golden flower”)
Luoyang**** - 洛陽 (“Luo (River)” and “sunny”)
* A bit inspired by Yang Kang (LotCH) in which in that novel, the protagonist Guo Jing and the antagonist Yang Kang were named from a poem referencing the Jingkang Incident (靖康), a historical event in the warring period between Jin and Song. Kang is also often coupled with jian in jiankang (健康), meaning “healthy.”
** Guo Shirong hasn’t been named directly in the text yet, but this is the name of the child ghost in the Qian He City arc.
*** LQG’s hometown, which isn’t too far from Huan Hua Palace but still within view of the Tian Gong Mountains.
**** Literally just ripped from Luoyang, the oldest city out of the Four Ancient Capitals. This is the de facto capital city in PIDW, since Airplane did pull some real locations for his worldbuilding (i.e. the Luo River) so therefore I say so because I can’t be bothered to wring the last of my creative juices to name places.

Hi hi! I watched We Best Love 1 & 2 and thought I would share my thoughts.
Short thoughts
My personal rating would be a 6/10. I had to force myself to continue after part 1 ended in heartbreak, and then again after finishing episode 3 of part 2. The rating is mostly driven by the fact I didn’t enjoy the main plotline nor the main secondary plotline and therefore probably wouldn’t ever rewatch it.
Longer thoughts
Things I liked
* The acting was superb, especially YU, who had such incredible facial control and emotiveness throughout. The hugs between Zhou Shu Yi and Gao Shi De hit me harder than the kisses or other things; they just felt so weighty and emotional, and like they were genuinely taking so much comfort from each other.
* The way the Japanese dialogue was sprinkled in so naturally was extremely charming and made me smile a lot.
* The scene in part 1 where Zhou Shu Yi and Gao Shi De’s mom are ganging up on Gao Shi De at the dinner table is probably one of my favorite BL scenes ever. I cackled so hard through the whole thing. Shu Yi and Shi De’s mom’s dynamic in general I just found so fun.
* Set design and styling of the actors, especially in part 2. I want Zhou Shu Yi’s house so badly, and few BL actors have looked quite as good in suits as those two. (Although I wanted so much to put a pair of suspenders on Shu Yi’s pants so his white shirt wouldn’t pop out between his black vest and trousers when he sat down.)
* Shi Zhe Yu and Liu Bing Wei’s side storyline. They had immediate chemistry in part 1, and after a rocky start in ep 1 of part 2, I thought they were very cute together. I loved the “donkey and carrot” dynamic.
* “You can consider it my dowry” literally made me choke on my tea. Epic line, especially delivered so nonchalantly. That whole conversation between Zhou Shu Yi’s dad and Gao Shi De was great—“No worries; he can join my family instead” was such a great table-turn, and very fitting for a couple that took turns pursuing each other and always felt like equals. I also appreciated that they tried hard to make Zhou Shu Yi’s father a more three-dimensional and likable version of the ultrapowerful homophobic dad character than normal, and it was clear Yoza Eriku was having a lot of fun playing him.
Things I didn’t like:
* The entire main plotline. I simply personally don’t enjoy the “interfering powerful homophobic parents” and “forced/prolonged separation” tropes. The five year separation, the misunderstanding, and the dad’s involvement just turned me off dramatically. If the show hadn’t been so short (and so highly recommended) I don’t think I would have finished it. Also, you described the plot as “classic”; the down-side of that is there was nothing in the main plot that felt new. Is this the best iteration of these common plots? Maybe. But coming to it after almost 30 other BLs (and the show coming out in 2021 after it had all been down before), there just wasn’t much that felt fresh in the plot or characters.
* Pei Shou Yi and Yu Zhen Xuan’s entire storyline. When Pei Shou Yi was explaining to Yu Zhen Xuan about his affective disorder (which is not a correct use of that term I don’t think, but that’s beside the point), I was super intrigued. (That line, “For me, it was just 12 years,” hit so hard.) I still think it’s a really cool and fascinating idea for a BL character. But I didn’t feel that that core concept connected to any of his actions in a way that made him suddenly make sense and feel like a well-developed, 3D character, so it just felt like a waste. For example, I still couldn’t tell you why he left Yu Zhen Xuan at the end of the year, although I wasn’t paying a ton of attention by that point. Even still, if at the end of that speech Pei Shou Yi had been like, “Look, if it makes you happy to be here with me then go ahead; as you now know, it literally doesn’t make a difference to me so I guess knock yourself out,” I could have dug that as a satisfying ending for them. The extra episode of drama and sudden U-turn from Shou Yi felt unnecessary and unearned. And I just didn’t really find Yu Zhen Xuan to be particularly likable or sympathetic as a character.
* Even though part 2 picked up literally where part 1 ended, and it was clear both parts were shot together, the further I got into part 2 the harder it was to feel like I was watching the same characters as in part 1. In particular, connecting the somewhat playful, lovesick Shu Yi of part 1 to the ambitious Shu Yi whose dream in life is to be chairman of a business conglomerate was a bit of a challenge.
* The whole business setting wasn’t badly done (it was oddly charming) but it wasn’t super well done either. Yu Zhen Xuan as CTO of a tech company was pretty hard to swallow. There also just wasn’t a lot of actual plot in part 2. The corporate espionage storyline didn’t seem to have a point, and largely seemed to exist so something besides a flashback would happen, and to justify the use of a business setting.
* The sheer amount of heterosexuality in part 1.
* The sheer amount of questions never answered in part 2. (“Who did Zhou Shu Yi see in America?” is the biggest one that I’m not aware was answered.)
Miscellanea:
* I don’t know if this is a Taiwanese accent thing or something general for Mandarin that I just never picked up on, but I noticed a lot of “sh” sounds devolving into “s” sounds throughout the show and from multiple characters. In particular, both main characters’ names got the treatment (Shu Yi being pronounced as Su Yi and Shi De as Si De), and the words 說 and 什麼 getting pronounced as “suō” and “sénme” respectively.
Other BL thoughts:
* I finished Manner of Death; personal rating is 8/10. I loved the couples and the setting, and the ending was extremely cute and satisfying. The two stars it loses are (1) for the unbelievably grim material the plot is actually about; and (2) because at times the romance and the mystery seemed really poorly integrated and to detract from one another. Would rewatch but with a lot of skipping around to avoid the really grim bits.
* I started Until We Meet Again. Just from the first episode I really love it. I think I know what’s going on with Pharm’s dreams, and if I’m right it’s going to be so cool. I already love the desserts angle. Manaow is my favorite female side character since Yihwa stole the show in Together with Me; her and Pharm’s banter and laughter feel so natural that I kept wondering if they were improv-ing. Probably the best 1st episode I’ve seen from a Thai BL, so I have very high expectations from here.
Hope you’re having a great weekend!
I hope you're having a greta weekend too!
Excellent thoughts all.
The only thing I'll point out, just in case you didn't know, is Taiwanese Mandarin is different from the Mainland in a few ways. (Most notably its written standards, like they did in Hong Kong.) But when spoken Standard Guoyu (used in education, businesses, govt offices, the news etc... see Guoyu Cidian《國語辭典》) seems quite formal and, to me, a little stiff sounding.
But your ear (better a than mine) is, I think, picking up on Taiwan Guoyu - it’s a colloquial, localized form. Slightly influenced by Hokkien and a few other things.
Languages do crazy things on islands.
---
On a different note if you liked the first few eps of UWMA then you are going to really love the rest. At least I hope so. Clearly we don’t have an exact match in taste, but UWMA is wonderful on story. There is a bit of a blushing maiden trope with Pharm but that’s the only flag I really have for that show (apart from old school trigger warning, which you kinda know you’re in for form the get go).

My friend @noldorinpainter sent me your latest Wen Kexing post on Instagram and I knew I had to find you on tumblr so I can reblog all the things.
Super love your Danmei fanart. Any novels or characters that resonate with you the most? What's your favorite portrait you've done of them?
Ahh thank you so much!! ♥
As for novels that resonate with me the most ... uhh you could probably just blindly throw a dart in the direction of Priest's works and hit an appropriate target lmao but if I had to choose it was probably Zhen Hun with Tyk and Qi Ye being a close second. I guess my art reflects that, although I'd absolutely love to draw more for other novels too (Tai Sui my beloved) I just don't really have the time ;__;
Hmm I'm not sure what my favourite art of them is, but I do like this Kunlun and this little scene from the novel that I illustrated haha from tyk, I think this Zhou Zishu (with bonus light motif) came out quite nicely, also this baby Wen Kexing (and, uh. all the angsty baggage that comes with it)

Popular danmei books I ditched due to ➡️personal⬅️ tastes:
(Been a while since I attempted reading these, so if there are minor inaccuracies below, that’s why.)
• First-Class Lawyer/Yi Ji Lǚ Shi 一级律师 by Mu Su Li: the trials in the book are not bound by the laws of our real-world countries, and that’s fine, but I doubt that any fair legal system will allow major surprise evidence/arguments to be sprung on a party during the trial. To address each side’s reasoning properly during the trial, parties have to receive and get to know each other’s general arguments before the trial. How can you prepare a proper defence if you don’t understand the reasons and evidence behind the accusation? How can the prosecution deal with the defendant’s counter-arguments if they don’t know what they are until the last minute? Furthermore, evidence has to be submitted for approval by the court before the trial to filter out irrelevant, bias-inducing evidence.
—From what I remember from my law course, that’s roughly how it works in the U.K., and I think that’s a fair way of doing things so I’d bet most civilised societies do that. The surprise-evidence plot twist smelled too illegal to me, so I was put off from reading the rest of the book.
• Priest’s books:
1. Sha Po Lang 杀破狼: stories with ancient yet non-xianxia/wuxia settings tend to bore me. Ancient yet non-xianxia/wuxia means the plot likely revolves around politicking and sometimes war, which I don’t like when they come in large (and male-dominated) spades because they’re too dry for me.
2 & 3. Tian Ya Ke 天涯客, Liu Yao 六爻: I love xianxia and wuxia so I thought I’d love these, but I just couldn’t keep reading far enough. Things were happening, but they weren’t riveting. I couldn’t get attached to the characters.
4. Zhen Hun 镇魂: I couldn’t get into it, partly because “modern + superpowers” isn’t a setting I usually like. (I do like it if it comes with a generous serving of humour, like in Depressed Husbands Want to Live a Peaceful Life by Green Wings.) Things were happening, but they weren’t riveting.
5. Mo Du 默读: part of the reason why I couldn’t get into it is because it’s a police story. Strangely, I love mysteries but not danmei police investigation novels, though I hope I’ll come to like them one day. (But I like police investigation fics! I guess I need to feel an attachment to characters first before they get involved in policing.)
• Criminal Psychology/Fan Zui Xin Li 犯罪心理 by Chang Er: it’s a police story, so the same reason as the one for Mo Du applies
• Qiang Jin Jiu 将进酒 by Tang Jiu Qing: same reason as Sha Po Lang
• Golden Stage/Huang Jin Tai 黄金台 by Cang Wu Bin Bai: same reason as Sha Po Lang
• Thousand Autumns/Qian Qiu 千秋 by Meng Xi Shi: I found the protagonist, romantic relationship, and events (as far as I managed to read them) bland
• Little Mushroom/Xiao Mo Gu 小蘑菇 by Yi Shi Si Zhou: interesting setting, but there are three things preventing me from liking the book:
1. I usually don’t like danmei books that are wholly set in a futuristic dystopia. I don’t read danmei to enjoy imagining a world/society that’s similar to ours but more oppressive/painful.
2. The protagonist’s personality is too mild for me, and the love interest’s personality isn’t a type I like either.
3. Female suffering. I can’t forget that part of the book because it’s so realistic (kudos to the author), it feels like shit that would actually happen if our world were to face those conditions. Good for the story, but I read danmei to feel semi-free from gender inequality, so it’s not great for me personally.
• Tong Qian Kan Shi 铜钱龛世 by Mu Su Li: the plot and characters weren’t attractive enough
• Supernatural Movie Actor App 灵异片演员app by Xi Zi Ji Jiu: the horror wasn’t horrifying enough and the protagonist tried too hard to seem impressive
• Qi Zi 契子 by Yi Xiu Luo: the systemic inequality within spousal relationships in the book is too huge and oppressive for me to enjoy the story
• Ru Xi 入戏 by Tong Zi/Zhe Yi Mei Zhen: racist, and based on the part I read, it looks like it’s on track to treat its female characters badly too
• Welcome to the Nightmare Livestream 欢迎进入梦魇直播间 by Sang Wo: 1) it feels too game-like and unrealistic (some books, but not this one, have fantasy settings that feel viable, like they could actually exist); 2) I’m not attached to the protagonist, and 3) there is very little interaction between the protagonist and love interest.
• Pan Guan 判官 by Mu Su Li: I wasn’t attached to the characters
• Quan Qiu Gao Kao 全球高考 by Mu Su Li: I wasn’t attached to the characters
*

@boysbeloving tagged me, thank you, sweetie darling!
It will be long and there will be gifs so this goes under a read more.
KinnPorsche the series, Tankhun Theerapanyakul Yeah yeah hot men everywhere and also Erika but Tankhun is the most amazing character in this plot-bizarre production-drippy unhinged delight of a TV show. He dresses wonderfully, he's a beautifully creative bully, he has some of the best lines, he's all for killing Tawan, he adopts Chay on sight, he may seem like just an over the top camp spoiled brat but there's a sinister undertone there that I also like a lot. I honestly want KPTS to get a season 2 primarily to see what Tankhun does.
Tumblr media
Hannibal, Francis Dolarhyde I'm not putting this here just because I happen to love Richard Armitage. Or maybe I am, a little. But the thing is, I also happen to love Dolarhyde in the book Red Dragon and I was a bit worried (but not really, because Hannibal was a very intelligent and creative show) about what they'd make out of him. It turned out they made him true to book Dolarhyde and downright mesmerising, and upped his intensity quite a bit. The scene with the original watercolour, oh my god.
Tumblr media
The Fall, Alexandria The Fall is a wonderful film and an aesthetic joy, but behind the beauty and the heavy emotion it's actually a brilliant commentary on reception theory, which is something I'm very very interested in (there may be a uni degree involved here). I mean, Lee fucking hot Pace is in this and my fave character isn't his, but the little girl who interprets and visualises Lee's character's stories. They really nailed it with the casting of her, too.
Tumblr media
Killing Eve, Oksana Astankova/Villanelle Best. Villain. Ever. She's deranged and her clothes are amazing and she's funny and murderous and competent. And she has Jodie Comer's expressive face. For two seasons this was great but not even Comer could save the rest, sadly.
Tumblr media
BBC Robin Hood, sir Guy of Gisbourne Shush. He's hot and troubled and he's historically wildly un-correctly dressed Richard Armitage. (The show was actually pure fun for a while but it caught feelings eventually, and the third season has some pain to it, especially for and about Guy)
Tumblr media
SKAM, Eva Kviig Mohn Je suis Eva. I relate so much to her that it can't be healthy. Never mind Isak and Even whose season caused SKAM to go viral, Eva's season is important to me on a very personal level.
Tumblr media
We Best Love, Yu Zhen Xuan He corrects his behaviour around others so little and I adore that. Zhen Xuan has zero fucks to give (except about Pei Shou Yi), and I don't care how paperthin and odd the plot of the show is, how questionable the kiss scene is, how magnetic Gao Shi De is or how beautifully heartbroken and pissed off Zhou Shu Yi is (well I do care a lot about some of this, but), as long as Yu Zhen Xuan is around I'm happy.
Tumblr media
Good Omens, Crowley Book-Crowley was a massive favourite from his first slithery appearance, and show-Crowley is David Tennant who's misplaced his hip joints. What's not to love.
Tumblr media
Deadwood, Al Swearengen Historically uncorrect like cocksucking whoa? That's evidently fine with me as long as it's a Western and gritty and filthy and violent and sarcastic and with Ian McShane. He was splendid as Odin/Mr Wednesday in American Gods too.
Tumblr media
The Honourable Woman, Nessa Stein We're not strictly in a fandom anymore, I think, as I wasn't an all out fangirl about this show, but oh my dear gods what Maggie Gyllenhaal does with Nessa Stein. Her performance is haunting and the character is complex and flawed and gorgeous.
Tumblr media
Fuck, I should have slipped in Gillian Anderson in something/anything. Oh well.
I don't think I talk to ten people here these days, to be honest. If you have read this far you're so tagged because wading through this proves that you love me.

Also the amount of whiplash I get from Zhou Ying's actress who previously played Zhen Huan from Empresess in the Palace is so real. Going from prom proper concubine of the emperor to a girlboss or 'wild girl' (according to the mother and father of wu pin) who wants to become a businesswoman. She plays both characters so well
