Federal public sector workers’ wages, adjusted for inflation, are no better than they were in 2007, a new report from the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives shows.
“The average federal public sector worker’s wages only buy the same today as they did in October 2007,” the CCPA report states. “No other industry—none—has seen average inflation adjusted wages pushed back as far as federal public sector workers.”
Over 100,000 federal public workers hit the picket lines across the country on Wednesday with a two-year expired contract and no wage offers that kept up with the rising cost of living.
Even if the union wins its current wage demands of 4.5% increases each year for three years, “those average federal worker wages would still be 4.8 per cent below the industrial average,” the report notes.

Ricardo Tranjan wants Canadians to rethink what we call our national housing crisis. Tranjan, a researcher with the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, says what we’re experiencing can’t even be called a crisis—our housing system hasn’t suddenly failed. Instead it’s working exactly as designed, enriching property owners at the expense of everyone else. The problem is that it’s gone into sudden overdrive.
That’s why he thinks the fixes espoused by government and industry—more supply, for the most part—aren’t going to get us where we need to be. Instead, he wants to inject politics back into the housing discussion, framing the problem as an issue of class, with tenants on one side and landowners on the other.

“In a way, rent strikes are very similar to labour strikes,” says Ricardo Tranjan, a political economist with the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives and the author of 2023’s The Tenant Class.
Basically, Tranjan says, individual tenants have very little power to negotiate with their landlords on issues like rent increases and maintenance — just as individual workers have little power to negotiate their wages. Landlords own the homes in which tenants reside, much like employers own a business, and have access to financial assets that tenants generally do not.
“The difference is that tenants do not have collective bargaining rights,” he says. Tenants do have the right to form associations, but those associations aren’t recognized as formal representatives of the tenants in legal proceedings. A landlord doesn’t have to sit down with a tenant union or association and bargain collectively. Rent strikes are a way of trying to gain the landlord’s attention and force that outcome, Tranjan says. (They’re also nothing new.)

There is no word in the English language more likely to generate heated debates and general bewilderment than “woke”. Those who use the term – as a form of self-identification, a pejorative, or simply as a means to describe a belief-system – tend to do so without consideration of the multiple ways in which it is interpreted.
Only this week, an opinion piece in the Guardian bore the headline “‘Woke’ isn’t dead – it’s entered the mainstream. No wonder the right is furious”. Its author, Gaby Hinsliff, shows no sign of having attempted to understand the various meanings of the term or how it has changed over the years. Even the headline betrays her lack of curiosity. What we call “wokeness” has been promoted by the Conservatives and Labour alike, and so to grapple with this subject in terms of “right” and “left” is to miss the point spectacularly.
In the wake of the Cass Report, Hinsliff understands in some vague way that the lack of evidence of “gender medicine” and the sterilisation of healthy children has come about due to the rise of the “woke” ideology. But she conflates this grotesque medical scandal with the closure of vegan restaurants and the declining popularity of oat milk. This is precisely the kind of semantic confusion that Guardian writers are usually so eager to criticise.
Hinsliff defines woke as “the broader push for social, racial and environmental justice”, but misses an important qualification. To this formulation, it would be accurate to add the words: “by authoritarian means”. For all that the woke movement attracts bullies who can enjoy the mask of virtue, I do not doubt that many of these activists are well-intentioned and genuinely believe that they are fighting for a better world. I too would like to see an end to racism and injustice, but I do not for a moment imagine it is a realistic aim given the imperfectability of human nature, and nor do I suppose that the erosion of free speech and liberal values is the best way to attempt it.
On the contrary, the only successful and provable method of curbing racism and other forms of injustice has been the liberal approach. And this is the very method that the “woke” are so determined to undermine and jettison.
In one sense, Hinsliff is correct. Authoritarianism is becoming more mainstream. The new hate speech law in Scotland, the proposed equivalent in Ireland, the Tory party’s various crackdowns on peaceful protest and the anti-freedom antics of the Canadian government all point to a disturbing trend. All this, of course, has come about because many decent people have been gulled into believing that the woke movement is simply a “broader push for social, racial and environmental justice”.
And given that the stakes could hardly be higher, we do require accessible terminology to describe the fundamental aspects of this ideology that is wreaking so much havoc on the western world. Personally I use “woke” as a descriptive shorthand without pejorative connotations. I do so as a kind of courtesy to all those activists and thinkers who have embraced the term for themselves. Those who claim that the word was invented by the right as a “snarl-word” simply don’t know their own history.
It's not perfect, largely because so few agree on its meaning. In 2021, a survey by the Centre for Policy Studies found that only 37 per cent of respondents understood what “woke” meant. And in a YouGov poll in the same year, 23 per cent of respondents said that they were not “woke’, while 12 per cent said that they were. Of the 59 per cent who claimed to understand what it meant to be “woke”, only a third referred to themselves as such, with more than half rejecting the label.
But how else are we meant to encapsulate this sprawling and complex ideology? It is the new state religion, the creed of the establishment, but without accurately describing it we have no means to hold it to account.
I suppose we have two options. Here’s one way that we might describe this dominant worldview:
“An ideology underpinned by the postmodernist notion that our understanding of reality is wholly constructed through language, and therefore censorship and other authoritarian measures are necessary to reshape society, with an intersectional focus that rejects the traditional Marxist prioritisation of class and economic disparities in favour of a conceptualisation of group identity as the prism through which all analysis must be filtered, with a particular emphasis on a form of standpoint epistemology that asserts there are multiple ‘ways of knowing’ and that the ‘lived experience’ of the marginalised must take precedence over empirical or scientific methodology – which are merely tools of the oppressor class – all of which is predicated upon the Foucauldian notion that society operates on the basis of invisible power structures, and that denials of such structures are evidence of their existence (as anyone who would deny them is likely to be benefiting from the privileges they afford) and that therefore there must be a cultural revolution in order to guarantee equality of outcome rather than equality of opportunity, one that will ultimately achieve the wholesale obliteration of ‘whiteness’, ‘patriarchy’ and ‘cis-heteronormativity’, in which the parameters of thought and speech are limited to the propagation of the cause, and in which all activities of all branches of the media, the arts and the state must be directed towards that end.”
Or we could just say “woke”.

Billy Bragg knows what's what:
Rich men earning north of a million wanna keep the working folk down Wanna keep the working folk down If you're selling your soul And you're working all day, overtime hours for bullshit pay Join a union
Practical Resources:
Workers in Canada: Everything You Need to Know About Unions from United Food and Commercial Workers Canada (UFCW Canada)
Workers in the US: Form a Union from the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO)
Workers in the UK: How Unions Work from the Trades Union Congress (TUC)
Workers in the EU: Join a Union from the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC)
Wonky resources:
Unions in Society - how unions fight inequality and support greater democracy from the Canadian Foundation for Labour Rights
Why Unions Matter from the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives - from 2011 but the case for unions has only grown stronger over the past dozen years.
Why Unions Are Good for Workers—especially in a crisis like COVID-19 and Unions Promote Racial Equity from the Economic Policy Institute (US)
And if you're wondering how we ended up in today's unholy mess, the answer is (again) Reagan, Thatcher, and the bastards that followed them that broke unions, cut income taxes for the rich, allowed the minimum wages to fall against average salaries, and cut funding for public services allowing inequality to grow and actively make it harder for families to stay out of poverty.
And remember - never, ever cross a picket line.

Minimum wage increases take effect in N.S., N.B., N.L.
Workers in three out of four Atlantic Canadian provinces earning minimum wage will soon see a rise in their pay cheques.
New Brunswick’s minimum wage went up by $1 on Saturday. It now sits at $13.75 per hour -- the highest minimum hourly wage across the Maritimes.
Meanwhile, in Nova Scotia, minimum wage earners will see a 25-cent increase in their hourly earnings --- representing less than a two per cent increase in wages. The province’s $13.60 per hour minimum wage is now the lowest in the Maritimes.
The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives Nova Scotia concluded that the 2022 living wage in Halifax hit $23.50, up $1.45 compared to 2021 data.
Nova Scotia’s minimum wage will see another increase on Apr. 1, 2023, reaching $14.30 per hour, with another increase to $15 per hour scheduled for 2024.
The increase to Nova Scotia’s minimum wage comes after city staff recommended back in March that Halifax regional council implement a $15 per hour minimum wage for all HRM employees by April 2023.
Newfoundland and Labrador also saw a 50-cent jump to $13.70 per hour Saturday.
The minimum wage on Prince Edward Island remained unchanged Saturday at $13.70 per hour. However, it is on track to reach $15 per hour by 2023 – with increases in January and October of next year.

Natasha Bulowski writes: “... [A] government audit released ... found Ottawa is falling short on its commitment to support fossil fuel workers in the global shift to a low-carbon economy. If the federal government continues on its current trajectory, the audit revealed, 50 communities and more than 170,000 fossil fuel workers will be left behind in the energy transition. ... Despite Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s 2019 promise to create a Just Transition Act, the federal government has been ‘unprepared and slow off the mark,’ environment commissioner Jerry DeMarco told Canada’s National Observer ...”
“Last year, an Abacus Data poll commissioned by Iron & Earth surveyed 300 fossil fuel workers across Canada from May 24 to June 11. It found a majority of workers surveyed believe ‘Canada should pivot towards a net-zero emissions economy by 2050 to remain a competitive global economy.’ Ninety per cent of workers surveyed also believe they could transition to at least one type of net-zero technology with 12 months or less of training, according to the poll results. ‘Everybody working in oil and gas is extremely skilled … they are very knowledgeable,’ said [longtime oil and gas worker Stephen] Buhler. He wishes he could tell every oil and gas worker they are capable of working in green industries and that advocating for more green jobs will give both workers and the planet a more secure future.”

It’s taken Manitoba women from Jan. 1, 2023 until April 4, 2024 to make the same income as their male colleagues did last year.
Numbers from the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA) show that, on average, women make $0.71 for every dollar a man makes, setting them back three months on an annual basis.
Molly McCracken, Manitoba Director of the CCPA, said racialized women make even less.
“Indigenous women earn $0.58 on the dollar compared to a white man, and women of colour earn $0.59 on the dollar,” she said, adding that none of these numbers have changed markedly in the past 30 years.
The impacts, she said, are not isolated to someone’s pocket. [...]

In one work day, and less than a half hour into the new year — 27 minutes to be exact — Canada's 100 highest-paid CEOs will have already earned the average worker's annual salary, according to a new study by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA). It translates to roughly $60,600 by 9:27 a.m. on Jan. 2, if you include Monday as a paid holiday, according to the report.
Like last year's report, which CBC News also covered, part of the explanation for the large increases in CEO pay is linked to inflation, Macdonald said. "This is largely a story about inflation ... CEOs are paid primarily through bonuses, and those bonuses are based on things like revenue and profits. When revenue and profit goes through the roof due to inflation, bonuses go through the roof." Macdonald said despite this, salaries for average workers are often not keeping up with inflation. "In 2022, the average worker in Canada got an average pay raise of $1,800, or three per cent. But prices went up by 6.8 per cent in 2022, meaning workers took a real pay cut of almost four per cent compared to 2021."

Anti-racism and Indigenous solidarity: IJV stands in solidarity with Indigenous peoples and with all marginalized peoples in Canada against racism, settler colonialism and white supremacy. IJV also works to combat antisemitism and distinguish it clearly from critiques of Zionism and Israeli policies.
Justice-Oriented Jewish Communities: IJV believes that no one should have to choose between embracing Judaism or Jewishness and supporting Palestinian rights. IJV chapters and campus clubs organize meaningful ritual gatherings that centre justice and critical reflection.
IJV Basis of Unity
We are a group of Jews in Canada from diverse backgrounds, occupations and affiliations who share a strong commitment to social justice and universal human rights. We come together in the belief that the broad spectrum of opinion among the Jewish population of this country is not reflected by those institutions that claim to represent Jewish communities as a whole. We further believe that individuals and groups within all communities should feel free to express their views on any issue of public concern without incurring accusations of disloyalty. We have therefore resolved to promote the expression of alternative Jewish voices, particularly in respect of the grave situation in the Middle East, which threatens the future of Palestinians and Israelis as well as the stability of the whole region.
IJV Principles
We are guided by the following principles:
We affirm that human rights are universal and indivisible and should be upheld without exception.
We believe that all people living within Israel-Palestine have the right to freedom, equality, and to peaceful and secure lives.
We believe that the fight against antisemitism is undermined when principled opposition to unjust Israeli government policies and practices–including those that contravene international law–are branded as antisemitic.
We oppose all forms of racism, including antisemitism, anti-Arab racism, anti-Black racism, Islamophobia, and intra-Jewish racism, which marginalizes Jews of colour, Sephardi and Mizrahi Jews.
We stand in solidarity with the Indigenous peoples of Turtle Island (North America) in their efforts to overcome the impacts of European colonization both past and present.
We seek direction from the communities with whom we stand in solidarity and follow their leadership at every opportunity.
We strive to be inclusive, justice-seeking, democratic, and open to diverse ideas and practices.
We believe that true security requires justice and solidarity.
We hereby reclaim the tradition of Jewish support for universal freedoms, human rights and social justice. The lessons we have learned from our own history compel us to speak out.
These principles are violated when we allow an occupying power to trample the human rights of an occupied people. Palestinian inhabitants of the West Bank and Gaza, living under Israeli occupation and military blockade, face appalling living conditions, with desperately little hope for the future. At the same time, Palestinian Israelis are subjected to a range of discriminatory laws and regulations and are consequently unable to enjoy the same rights and freedoms that are enjoyed by Israeli Jews. This institutionalized discrimination has led increasing numbers of people around the world to identify Israel an apartheid state. We therefore declare our support for a properly negotiated peace between the Israeli and Palestinian people and oppose any attempt by the Israeli government to impose its own solutions on the Palestinians. Furthermore, we support full equality for Palestinian Israelis. To these ends, IJV supports the 2005 call issued by the Palestinian Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) National Committee for an international campaign of Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions to compel the State of Israel to comply with international law and support Palestinian Israelis’ human rights by
Ending its occupation and colonization of all Arab lands and dismantling the Wall;
Recognizing the fundamental rights of the Arab-Palestinian citizens of Israel to full equality; and
Respecting, protecting and promoting the rights of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes and properties as stipulated in UN resolution 194.
