Silence (1/4)
Warnings: angst; hurt
Words: 1.2K
Summary: You accidently coming out destroyed a decade long friendship.
AN: Thanks for all the love on my first story "New Year"! I didn't proofread this one so be warned. This might get a Part 2 with a happy ending but I'm not sure.
Tumblr media
[Part 2: Second Chance]
"Movie night later?" You asked Natasha at the dinner table where all the Avengers sat with you.
Natasha nodded her head and smiled at you widely. "Sure. But it better be a horror movie." You loved horror movie nights with her. Neither of you were scared of them but you both laughed at ridiculous scenes and cuddled anyways.
"So tell me Y/N," Sam interrupted your conversation. "What's going on between you and black widow?"
You looked at him baffled. Natasha and you were friends ever since you both worked at shield together so you didn't get why he implied that more is between you two. "What?" You said.
"Oh come on, you two are super close, doing almost everything together, cuddle all the time, go out, wear each other clothes... there has to something going on between you two." Sam's hint at you liking girls had you shifting in your seat. It was true that you were into girls but you haven't told a soul. Wanda was the only one who might found out about it since she couldn't control her mind reading powers when she first joined the Avengers.
"We're just friends." You told him, with anxiety slowly creeping up on you. The whole team started to listening in on the conversation. "I swear we're just friends."
"Are you sure that you don't wanna date her?" He wiggled his eyebrows. His words and behavior infuriated you. And with this rage mixed with anxiety, you unknowingly came out to the entire team. "Just because I like girls doesn't mean that I instantly want to date my female friends."
Some looked shocked, others looked as if they had suspicions and then there was Yelena who looked happy, proud even. "Ha! So I wasn't crazy when I saw Y/N Y/L/N ogle that one girl at the mall months ago. Pay up Kate Bishop." She exclaimed excited. You blushed after hearing Yelena's words, thinking you were subtle checking girls out.
Natasha, who sat next to you, was brooding. She didn't like it one bit that you hadn't told her about your sexuality first. She felt hurt. Did you think she would judge you or not accepting you for liking girls? Were you afraid of losing your (Avengers) family? Or did you simply not trust her with that kinda stuff? You had never held yourself back before so why right then?
"Alright but do you have a girlfriend already or can I be your wingman?" You blushed and hid your face in your hands. "No help needed." You barely got those words out. "Lady Y/N, you have to introduce us to them!" Thor demanded in excitement.
"We've only been on a couple of dates." You blushed further. "Plus she's not out yet so I rather not drop any names." Thor was quiet understanding and dropped the topic. You were honestly glad for that since it ended the whole conversation about you. The topic now was about Tony and Pepper.
You shifted back your attention to the Widow next to you who was acting strange. Her body language was awkward and you hoped once the movie night started it'd get better. But you were wrong, it got worse, the air between you two was thick and non of you uttered a word about the incident at dinner.
The red head distanced herself even more from you after the movie night. It hurt you deeply, the pain only got worse with how hard you tried to fix whatever happened, but nothing good came out of it. Natasha shut you out so easily that you overthought your whole relationship with her. In the end you came to the conclusion that you never really knew her.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was almost 2 months since the coming out incident happened, while you and Natasha's relationship were in pieces, your relationship with the other ex-shield agent thrived. But you missed the red head dearly. You missed her warmth that radiated off of her when you two cuddled closely during movie nights. Her touch on your arm whenever she was excited to show or tell you something. You even missed her awful dry jokes she made to cheer you up. But all that was left was her ghostly presence which seemed to never leave your side. Not matter what you did, her ghost lingered every single second.
You felt heaviness inside of you as sat down on the bench in the training room, and the spot next to you is empty. Training was no longer fun when you didn't have your favorite person train with you. It felt as if the universe was against you when you saw Natasha enter the training room. What she did here at this unholy hour was beyond you. It made your mood even more sour.
"Steve said you'd be here." She spoke up. "He said we need to spar again. So move your ass."
Your body hesitated to get up but eventual did with a heavy sigh. Exhaustion was written all over your face. Natasha was already in the ring, waiting for your slow ass to join. Both of you took your stand but non of you tried first to make a move. You both danced around each other which irritated Natasha immensely. She expected a move from you long ago since that was how you always started sparring with her.
Her irritation turned into frustration and anger fast. And did something she probably will regret for the rest of her life. "Trouble in paradise with Agent Shaw?" She taunted you. "Saw some spicy video of hers the other day."
That got your complete attention. You knew about Agent Shaw's private video which her ex boyfriend leaked years ago. The video recently surfaced once again and you tried your best to take it down forever. You even begged Tony for help, who was glad to finally have a small challenge again. It took him some time but it was finally gone now but apparently not before the Black Widow saw it.
"Okay..?" What else were you supposed to say to the women you once knew perfectly.
"I have a copy and I'm sure you have one too but in case you don't, I'm willing to-" She got cut off by you punching her in the face. You didn't meant to punch her this hard but you were fed up with her bullshit.
The blow of the hit was so unexpected and hard that she fell on the ground. She looked up at you stunned as hell, her eyes fluttered a bit while her bottom lip started to bleed.
"What the fuck Natalia." The sight of woman on the floor, looking so helplessly broke your heart once again. You were fighting so hard to get the friendship back that now by realizing your friendship was broken beyond repair, thanks to her behavior, was pain on a whole different level. What you were about to feel is grief from the loss of a decade long friendship.
Your heart and mind fought against each other but you had enough. Every single bad emotion was roaring in you as you silently said your final goodbye. Also with that, the ghost of hers that you felt all the time, disappeared.
The silence that hung in the air after you left was loud, it started to suffocate Natasha in a way she didn't know existed. How did she let herself become a monster again? Didn't she learn from her past? No thought in the world would help her in this situation because at the end, nothing mattered anymore since it was her silence that broke you two apart.

THANK YOU that co-parenting post was driving me crazy
Listen I let sooooooo many obviously fanon-based takes go at this point because not only is it way too much effort trying to respond to all of them, but I'm not that much of an asshole. But then there's just some things that transcend any possible scope of fanon/cultural osmosis-acquired "knowledge" and veer into "you have absolutely no clue what you're talking about and even just reading fandom takes couldn't get you here." And that post was definitely one of them.
Like, if it had just been a crack about the Bruce-Dick-Clark relationship I absolutely would have let it go, because despite it not being canon and Clark textually acting as Dick's pseudo-uncle there's a lot of basis for you to make jokes about Bruce and Clark co-parenting Dick in a lot of older Golden and Silver Age issues, particularly in World's Finest!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I'm literally writing a fic that, in part, explores how Jason and Talia's canon relationship walks the boundary between "grudging allies and confidants" and "teacher/student" and "my dad's ex/my ex's kid' and "parent/child," so while it's not correct to say that Bruce is "co-parenting" Jason with Talia (he's most definitely not doing so) it's not exactly an objectively wrong conclusion to come to either.
But the rest of them? Just. The most baffling takes on the face of the planet. I don't understand where they got them and I don't understand why they felt so confident stating them the way they did. Leaving out Babs acting as Cass's surrogate mother, saying Bruce was co-parenting Tim with Shiva of all people over Jack Drake and Dana Winters, saying that Bruce was a parent or even a parental figure to Babs and Steph in any way, shape or form, adding in a random Bat-affiliated person as Duke's parent who not only is less than 5 years older than him and hasn't interacted with the core Batfam in nearly 5 years (because John Ridley is holding him hostage over in Jace's books) but has quite literally never canonically shared panel-time with Duke...just wild. Please just acknowledge that Bruce can be someone's coworker and/or mentor without being their parent and that the vast majority of the Batfam do in fact have other parents and parental figures that are not Bruce!
Kind of wonder what it's like in their brain, because I can't imagine the levels of active rejection of the source material required to get to the takes they got to.

tried to read wfrau as i saw people rec it, but there's something bothering me in that fic. i don't like the alpha-male-ification of remus in wfrau. remus is not a beast who can fight another beast werewolves. he was a timid, sheltered boy in canon, but it's like you're making him fit into the fanon toxic wolfstar heteronormative box. it feels weird to read. please don't make me start on why it seems like you hate sirius OR use sirius as a self-insert to indulge in your fetishization of remus. like why do you write sirius as abused, when it was canonically remus who was disabled. can you consider rewrite some points in the fic, aligned to canon?
lmao where do i even start with this. uhhhhh okay first of all to answer your question - no, i will not be rewriting to make my non-canon-compliant fic more compliant with canon. if you don't like it, i suggest you don't read it! i'm not writing the story for you, and i'm not really sure why you think it would matter to me whether you like it or not. there are plenty of other fics out there that you can go read.
this fic was explicitly written to be a werewolf-fighting ring au. if you don't like remus fighting other werewolves, then i'm baffled as to why you even started it in the first place, considering that it's clearly tagged "werewolf fighting ring." i don't agree with your interpretation of canon that he was a "timid, sheltered" boy; even if i did, this fic is specifically exploring how the characters would be different in an au, non-canon-compliant version of their world. if the gay romance between two men is too heteronormative for you, there are, again, other fics out there that you can read. and if you don't want to read about "toxic" relationships then u DEFINITELY shouldn't read this fic, because none of the relationships in it are wholesome and healthy lmao. if you think i hate sirius...i don't even know what to say lol. like yeah i hate him so much that i've written hundreds of thousands of words of fanfiction about him. that checks out! and remus is fetishized in this fic for being a werewolf, which is a topic that gets explored in-depth in his pov chapter and is not something condoned by the narrative. i'm assuming you didn't read that far, though, and that what you mean by "fetishization" is the fact that sirius finds him sexy. so. again, i think you probably should just not read this fic if characters being sexually attracted to each other bothers you. i write sirius as being abused because that's the story i wanted to tell; not really sure how remus being canonically disabled is something that would cancel that out? those are two separate things. and remus's canonical disability is his lycanthropy, which....also exists in this fic. and is another topic that gets explored throughout the story.
in conclusion i truly cannot emphasize enough that i am not the person out here reccing this fic, i am not trying to grow an audience or go viral or any of that bullshit. not sure where you got the rec from, but i have actually asked people not to post about my fics on tiktok to try and avoid them blowing up there, because i do not want people like you reading them. i include an entire warning on the first chapter about the fact that this fic is dark and deals with heavy topics; i've tagged the fic thoroughly and have also included "additional tags to be added" to remind people that it's a wip and things are subject to change. all this is to emphasize -- i really, really, really don't care if any person reading the fic dislikes it. i don't care if they dislike it so much that they have to stop reading, because i don't care how many people are reading it in the first place!! i'm writing this story purely for fun, for myself, so i'm going to write what i want to write. even if you intended for this message to be polite, it just comes off as incredibly entitled to ask a stranger on the internet to spend hours of time and labor tailoring a story to your specific tastes, and if you think this type of message is okay to send then i think you should genuinely sit down and reevaluate the way you approach fandom. nobody is making you read fics you don't like, so just....don't read them.

Good morning/ evening! My name’s Sam and I’m currently a film student hoping to get into freelance writing. I’ve got a couple questions if you don’t mind (hoping you haven’t already answered them and I just missed them).
When you first starting making your own films, did you have already have thick skin for any critics/ bad reviews? Or is that something you grew over time?
Also, for your production company, do you hire interns and PAs or do you prefer filmmakers with more experience?
Thank you!
To your first question, I do not have a thick skin in that area AT ALL and never have. I don't know many people who do.
I'm often approached by fans who will talk about what a project of mine means to them, or I find a review or think piece online where the author really connected with my work. I want to let that feedback in, because it's validating. But letting it in means letting ALL of it in, even the negative. I don't really get to pick and choose. Once I decided to let myself react emotionally to other people's feedback, those gates are open I've got to accept whatever comes through.
I take my work very seriously, and tend to pour my heart and soul into it. We make these things because we love them. It can literally take years of daily work to do. When people love it, it feels great. When people don't, it hurts. There's really no way around that.
Film criticism has, like a lot of things, devolved over time. I was a massive fan of Robert Ebert, who was thoughtful and sophisticated in his critiques (most of the time), and tried to approach each movie he watched on the film's own terms - from the perspective of "how successful was this at achieving what it set out to do?" I see a lot of criticisms today that don't do this, and instead are lamenting what a movie is or isn't, saying things like "I wish this was more..." or "This isn't good because I wanted it to be something else."
"I wanted a ________ and what I got instead was ______ so it sucks."
The other issue is that loud, sensationalized vitriol gets more clicks. Negative reviews, especially brutal and callous ones, get more attention than positive ones. I've gotten to know and befriend some professional critics over the years, who have all told me that the positive reviews don't generate the audience reaction quite like the negative ones. People enjoy watching things get beat up. We reward the wrong kind of discourse, and that isn't unique to film criticism - it's everywhere. That's just a symptom of our culture.
One of my great frustrations is how we assert our opinion as objective truth. There's nothing more dangerous than tweeting "I liked ______ movie!" The comments flood in about how you're wrong, how it sucks, blah blah blah. People think their own taste is somehow factual. If someone says "I had a fantastic steak dinner last night and I loved it," we don't say "you're wrong, steak sucks". We understand the concept of taste when it comes to other things we consume, but when it comes to entertainment each one of us thinks we're the ultimate authority.
For myself, my producer and my wife have long discouraged me from reading reviews. I still can't help it. It's not healthy though. I can scroll past a dozen positive ones, and they evaporate in my mind, but I read one scathing thing and it sticks with me for days. There is one particular review of MIDNIGHT MASS that is one of the most baffling and frustrating things I've ever read, as the author appears to have misunderstood just about every aspect of the series, and drawn the angriest, most misguided, most erroneous conclusions. I read it with my jaw on the ground... "but they're objectively wrong. That isn't what happens, and that isn't what the show is even about." But what can I do? Who am I to say their experience of the show is invalid? They feel how they feel, and that's fine. That's okay. It has to be.
So your skin doesn't get thicker, it is a bizarre emotional experience to put something personal out there into the world and see the gamut of reactions. But at a certain point you have to remind yourself that it's impossible to please everyone, and that these projects don't belong to the filmmaker - they belong to the audience, and each and every one of those experiences is unique and valid. Perhaps there are lessons to be learned, and perhaps the critique can help you grow as a filmmaker.
I have similar feelings when I see someone trashing someone else's work I happen to love - for example, I remain baffled by people who didn't like EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE, but that doesn't mean anything. It didn't work for them, that's all. Nothing works for everyone.
I have found over the years that I respect and appreciate analyses and criticisms that take this more personal point of view, and talk about their own interaction with the work as opposed to just dismissing it outright. When someone says "this movie didn't work for me," or "I didn't connect with it," or "It just wasn't my cup of tea," I have a much easier time taking it seriously. It's changed how I talk about my own reactions to movies or shows that I didn't respond to. And I found that it's made it much easier for me to enjoy things even if they aren't quite for me. Instead of being reactive and saying "it sucks" or "I hate this," I've gotten better at realizing it's not a binary experience - I can look at what DOES work for me, and I can appreciate it, even while other elements might not.
It makes for a much more nuanced discussion, and helps me grow. Sometimes, though, it's just the wrong thing to watch on the wrong day, and that's fine too. Maybe that makes it a little easier. If I step out of something and just really don't enjoy it, it helps remind me that it's not personal. Clearly, other people DO enjoy these things, sometimes I'm very much in the minority. And when that happens, I can say "oh, it's not so bad if someone hates a movie I made, or a show, or whatever. Life's too short."
But I long ago decided I'd never say anything negative about someone else's work in public. I know too much about what it takes to make a movie, and I'm not a critic. I'm a filmmaker. This town is too small, and there is zero upside in dragging another filmmaker's efforts. On the rare occasions when I do see another filmmaker indulge in that behavior, it is always a terrible look. And it can have real-world consequences - there are a few filmmakers who I've seen publicly slag off other people's work, and I quietly decided never to hire them. Like I said, it's a small town... and most of us read what people say about our work.
We should get back to that work, remember how lucky we all are to do this for a living, and leave that kind of thing to the critics.

For long, long seconds, Roy considers ignoring the shrill beep at his bedside. And then he groans and rolls over, groping for his phone and squinting at the bright glare. K. Rayner, it says, to his mild alarm. He can't remember the last time he talked to Kyle one on one. Years, probably. If he's calling it must be important.
"H'llo?" He asks, staring directly at the dim night light to try and wake himself up.
"Roy!" In contrast to his sleep-rough rasp, Kyle sounds way too chipper. "You said Hal was sort of like your second dad, right? I'm so sorry."
"... did you seriously call me at," he pulls the phone away from his cheek, glancing at the time, "three in the morning just to say that?"
"What? No. Of course not. Why would I do that?" Kyle's words trip into each other like they can't come out fast enough. "Look, uh." And then he falls quiet.
Roy waits.
And waits.
And waits.
"Rayner."
"Don't get mad, okay?"
"Kyle," Roy almost snaps, in the same tone he uses when Lian gets too rambunctious.
"Okay, so." Another too-long beat of silence. "Do you know why Hal would just... leave out the window after we... uh..."
Roy tries to not jump to conclusions. He really tries. "After you...?"
"After we, uh. We. Are you really going to make me say it?"
"You slept with Hal?!"
"Hey," Kyle says defensively, "you said you wouldn't be mad!"
"... and he jumped out the window?"
"Well, not right after, but - but. Yeah." Kyle groans. "What the fuck, Roy? Why would he do that?"
Roy can't help it. He laughs. He laughs and doesn't stop laughing for at least a solid minute. "Oh, man," he says, once he stops, "you must be an awful lay."
"You know I'm not!" Kyle had been waiting in sullen silence, and he sounds nothing if not like a petulant teenager. Roy can picture him pouting on the other side of the line. "It was good! It was - it was really, really good, actually, and then he just," and his tone abruptly drops from animated to sounding like a kicked puppy, "and then he just left."
Roy wipes the tears from his eyes and tries to be serious, because Kyle does sound a little upset, but mostly he just seems baffled. "Sorry, man, I don't know. You could ask Ollie."
"I am not asking Ollie." And now he sounds horrified.
"Dinah?"
"You're no help," Kyle groans.
"Did he really go out the window? He didn't leave a note or anything?"
"No," Kyle bit out. "And that was half an hour ago, so I'm pretty sure he's not coming back."
"Sorry. I'll ask him if I see him again."
"Don't - you know what? Sure. Go ahead and ask him."
"Could be mind control," Roy says absently, wondering how much Kyle would kill him if he told Wally. And Hal, actually. Hal would kill him first. Nah, the risk is not worth it. ...maybe. Maybe it's a little worth it. "Maybe you should suit up and check that he's not lying in a ditch somewhere. Or a zombie. Or-"
"Well, that's horrifying." Something clicks in the background as Kyle presumably pushes open the same window Hal had left out of half an hour ago. "You really think that's possible?"
"Stranger things have happened."
Kyle makes a dubious hum. "Great. I've never worried about sex zombies in my life, but now I'm worried. Thanks."
"It's not the sex zombies you should worry about," Roy says in the tone of someone who knows too much, "it's the people with too many feathers."
"I can't tell if you're fucking with me or not."
"And if anyone tries to fuck you in a cave, just don't. Don't do it."
"I'm hanging up before you can give me any more nightmares."
"Say hi to Hal for me!"
"Goodbye, Roy."

Meandering thoughts about Pecharunt/possible ecology Stuff(tm) for the specific one in Mochi Mayhem + more general ideas for if you treat them as a species, since a surprising amount of mythical+legendary pokemon are explicitely /not/ single specimen species, just very rare (Shaymin being mentioned as migrating, Latios and Latias entries mentioning flocks, etc)
Pleeease note I'm going to write a post about this with illustrations/partially in-universe perspective in a bit, but I did want to throw out my initial thoughts!!!
Also, with the exception of the first thing I say, I really encourage people to consider Pecharunt from an ecology perspective in their works alongside like. an individual pokemon with its own backstory, because I think that allows for richer more interesting stories! I think if you like Pecharunt and want to attack me with rocks for saying what I'm about to say, please feel free to write your own meta/opinions in your own post, because I also really like Pecharunt and would like to see more stuff written about it as an inidividual animal and also as a theoretical species. I think it's very cute. ^_^
Also I will note that this is steam of conscious style stuff; I may restate my points multiple times, sorry about that!
With that out of the way, let's look at the scarlet and violet website's entry.
The one that has people fighting about this thing's malice or lack thereof.
Tumblr media
'Uses Its Cunning To Survive' is a very evocative phrasing.
That line being so carefully combined with Pecharunt being described as 'sly' and doing actions such as pretending to be a baby Pokemon a la Happiny to gain sympathy, and possibly specifically mimicking /human/ kids in vocalization/etc depending on the tone you read it in... that is a very specific sort of evolutionary strategy that this calls to mind.
The information provided on this page, combined with the fact it apparently was living with an old couple, and the fact that in the story of Momotaro, the couple found the child in a peach floating down the river, and decided to raise the child as their own...
...Game Freak accidentally made a Mythical that is a brood parasite.
This probably sounds like I'm jumping to conclusions, but there's a couple other things that make me think that this is a reasonable conclusion about how a young instance of Pecharunt works.
To explain why, let's look at Pecharunt's movelist, and specifically its egg moves! Also, a quick review of what 'Brood Parasite' means.
Brood parasitism as an evolutionary strategy comes about since raising young takes a lot of time and effort; in the more standard usecases, like in birds, this tends towards an egg being placed in the nest, and the hatching animal outcompeting the host bird's actual young by crying louder and more consistently, or pushing them out of the nest to obtain more resources/attention.
Tumblr media
Much like Pecharunt, this may seem baffling at first (in cuckoo bird's case, because of the size disparity, and in Pecharunt's case, the Base Stat Total disparity)
This is not always the case, mind; Asian Koels tend to not push other young out the nest (though they still do it Sometimes), and the Black-headed duck is notable for having an extremely extended incubation time in which after that point the duck hatches and wanders off.
'But Pecharunt is a mythical, does it really need that much protection?' Well, lets look at a couple facts you may or may not already know. Here are Pecharunt's egg moves:
Tumblr media
Pecharunt at level one has extremely weak moves, and to make matters worse, Pecharunt is in one of the slowest exp gain groupings. Even worse, it learns new moves every eight levels when a lot of pokemon are getting new stuff to learn every four, and does not get a lot of good coverage moves at that!
To put it in even further context, Pecharunt learns Malignant Chain, its signature move and the one that specifically utilizes binding mochi in a more aggressive fashion than the firing mochi/serving mochi seen in game events and youtube video stuff, at level 48.
With that in mind, its growth rate seems to be in a similar range as something like the dragons.
A lot of Dark types, one of the things that Pecharunt is weak to, specifically exist in packs, which would leave smaller less experienced instances profoundly vulnerable. To add on this this, the areas I've been suspecting for original range + what in birdwatching stuff is termed as vagrancy (animal appearing way way outside of normal range) all don't just have Dark types, but in many cases /multiple/ species of Dark types. Poochyena, Houndour, Bisharp... all of these are dark types that live in packs or large groups. Even more notably, Poochyena and Mightyena in the wild have a chance of carrying Pecha Berries, which cure poison. Isn't that something.
These same evolutionary pressures could very reasonably result in Pecharunt's comically high defense! Mightyena and Poochyena are physical attackers, and a lot of the Dark moves Houndour and Doom learn by level up are physical.
On that note: Special Defense notably is /not/ Pecharunt's strong suit, and the weakness to Psychic means that any sufficiently nasty special attacker could rip through the lower hp pool hiding behind the physical defense like wet tissue paper. I'm going to specifically point at Beldum and Metagross and then smile serenely. Steel types in general would be a problem if in a sitation where its unable to utilize mochi properly. Which is where the 'subjugation pokemon' aspect, and its ecological strategy after its lengthy maturation would come about.
So, if Pecharunt were a species, they'd need a lot of extra care and protection to reach anywhere near maturity/full potential, and specifically that sort of care and protection from something or someone that can handle the things it can't whether that's via a more varied movepool/different typing, or the structures and technology of human beings in the pokemon setting (though in another post I mmmaay get into some thoughts about how if Pecharunt is a species, it probably is in decline in the modern Poke-setting. Stay tuned.)
A limited movepool makes sense if ecology-wise, Pecharunt is a parasite, even if one that is significantly more free-living than the ones these sort of things usually apply to; trait loss is pretty common with parasites as stuff gets delegated to hosts/host species. This is a Pokemon that doesn't need to have type coverage because its own ecology is based around commanding other Pokémon that do have the correct type coverage to defend it.
And since that's covered with Binding Mochi, all that it needs to be good at is the things that its movepool is geared towards; manipulating people and Pokémon to protect itself, giving pause and sympathy without the use of poison when it can't directly manipulate something, running away when /that/ fails utilizing Astonish to make a target flinch when alone and Parting Shot when with a retainer/bodyguard, and then finally as a last resort when an old enough/high enough level, the arsenal of extremely powerful non-mochi poison type moves, Malignant Chain, and Shadow Ball... so, the exact sort of actions that Pecharunt one for one takes in Mochi Mayhem.
Tumblr media
It even specifically attempts to flee after Arven and Penny are defeated, which lines up nicely with the possible usecase for Parting Shot!
Prior to learning Shadow Ball and Malignant Chain, It has a TON of moves that specifically take it out of the fight and put another Pokemon into the fight with advantages, like Memento and Parting Shot. This, in my opinion, gives credence to this being the in-universe reasoning for the movepool being what it is.
Memento in /particular/ being a move that goes so far as to risk fainting is uh. Interesting, especially since it's one of the moves learned at level 1!
Oh and speaking about its level one/egg moves: on the topic of Astonish!
I think that move reflects something really fun about the peach pit motif. Which is that I think the glowing interiors of the shell serve similar purposes to the false eyes on irl moths + also the pokemon Masquerain (who also learns astonish famously!) Imo, the false eye flashing analogue feels like a really easy pull to make.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A less move-oriented view of this is also kind of established in the scene with Arven and Penny!

This Pokemon tends to keep the shell closed outside of battle and certain interactions, and the scene specifically uses the kind of duller, slow moving animations for the closed form and then has them launch into the mochi thing, utilizing startle response/reflexive action to advantage, comedic as it is.
The mochi throwing also works really well as a two birds one stone defense measure for Pecharunt ecology-wise, as similar 'throw food that was being eaten in hopes predatory animals will give up chase to eat that' is actually pretty common, and hell, Legends Arceus has shown that bean cakes and muffins work very well against many pokemon.
You may ask, 'Invi, does that mean the shell being fully open for the entire mythical encounter fight mean they're puffing themself out like a cat as an agonistic display for the entire duration of the fight?'
Tumblr media
And to that I say...Quite possibly! Other instances of Pecharunt in the story showing itself probably land more into deimatic displays/startle displays like those used by butterflies and stick insects, but the fight instance probably specifically is agonistic, considering it starts making aggressive hissing 'chhhrah' noises, especially in contact with the Loyal Three.
As for the Binding Mochi from an ecology perspective/real life analogue... there's no completely direct analogue irl, but it serves two purposes that are very much common strategies!
What Pecharunt did by making the Loyal Three retainers + what it did to Mossui Town is a pretty open and shut example of bodyguard manipulation.
This is something more commonly seen in parasitoid species, but essentially, this is a subsection of behavior altering in parasites where you get your host to do stuff for you to keep you safe. Examples in our real world include wasp species that get caterpillars thrash if potential predators get too close.
In the Pokemon world, the go-to example would be Nihilego, whose venom has some similarities to Binding Mochi, but is noted as specifically messing with someone's preexisting abilities and impulses, while Pecharunt's alterations of its retainers tend to fall in line with their desires/wishes.
As for the fact it's a food item that gets other things to defend it, that's also common! Aphids and scale insects commonly produce honeydew, and get ants to defend them from predators in return for such.
As for it being mochi? The concept of something along those lines being produced as a starchy thing is also not that far out, as a number of psyllid bugs produce Lerps, which consist of sugars and starches. In the case of the bell lerp, which actually utilizes a bird, the Bell Miner, to avoid being attacked by other fauna and flora in return for continued consumption of aforementioned lerps!
I've focused on the brood parasite section, but overall I will say that after hitting Malignant Chain, it likely becomes a social parasite a la certain types of cuckoo bees, and these would essentially intergrade nicely (can start more actively controlling pokemon/people it's with already, move around more freely than the initially probably very nest-centralized movement to keep itself safe until its defenses can develop more properly).
Misc additional notes:
Interestingly enough, while Pecharunt has the 'no eggs discovered' thing, it does have a set amount of time to hatch in game data and it is specifically way shorter than most other Legendaries/Mythicals minus a couple notable exceptions like Terapagos and the guardian deities; Pecharunt's starts at 20, which is the same as eggs for starters like Bulbasaur and etc.
Like for context, most of the other guys have egg cycles of 80-120. This would match up to a really common phenomenon in brood parasites where the eggs actively hatch faster than the host animal's to get a leg up on resources and etc.
... I actually have even more thoughts specifically about what Pecharunt's habitat/original home was, and also a couple different theories about what it eats, as well as more granular things about like, physical stuff about this guy's body instead of a life cycle overview, but I'm going to save those for later because this is already ungodly long. Uhhh closing thoughts:
Tumblr media
Hold Pecharunt like hamburger, and give it one of every food and drink. It's safe to do this.

" Aitana! " Emilia shouts from the living room.
The woman in question, Aitana Barilla was currently in the kitchen; decorating the cookies she'd have on display in her bakery the next day - her thoughts were broken the second she heard her best friend causing her to groan and shake her head, " I'm in the kitchen Lia "
The blonde steps into the kitchen with an expression that Aitana can only describe as sneaky causing the former to narrow her eyes at the woman. " What did you do? "
Emilia feigned an expression of shock, " Excuse me, why on earth would you think I did something? "
Aitana tilts her head with a deadpan expression which caused Emilia to laugh, " Alright, you can thank me for what I'm about to say "
" Which is ....? " Aitana prompts her to continue.
Emilia worked as a model, and through modeling she was able to network through many different social circles; some of which included football players, and knowing Aitana's love for the sport prompted the blonde to work some strings in her favor, " You know I did a campaign with Kylian Mbappe right? "
Aitana nods slowly, " Yes, it's all you've talked about " she states with a chuckle. " Why are you telling me? "
" Well, he and I ... " Emilia beams, " we spent time together "
Aitana groans " Lia, I don't need mental images of you having sex with someone so get to the actual point "
" Alright, I talked about you and your bakery " Emilia said, " and I also mentioned that you're single "
Aitana places the icing bag down and shoots her a glare, " Is this a weird invitation for me to join in on your hookup? "
" Oh my gosh Aitana, please don't jump into conclusions and just let me finish " Emilia shudders, " Anyways, the reason I told him you're single is because he mentioned that one of his teammates is single "
" Oh my god if it's Neymar, I will kill you! you know how much I hate that sleazy asshole " Aitana states, it wasn't that she disliked Barcelona; if anything, she wasn't as crazed about ElClasico like some people, however she heavily disliked the Brazilian football player.
" No, no ... " Emilia shakes her head, " It's actually someone you have a crush on "
" Someone I have a crush on " Aitana echoed her statement before her eyes widened, " No " she whispers.
" Yes " Emilia nods, buzzing with excitement. " We have a double date, I'm going with Kylian and you're coming with me to see none other than the DILF of all DILF's Sergio Ramos "
Aitana froze, " You ... " she paused, raising her hand then putting it down. " How? "
" I worked my magic, and Kylian mentioned how Sergio was looking for someone who isn't interested in his money, and likes him for him and since you're not as football crazed as some of the girls I see, you're a perfect fit " Emilia giggles, " So, clear up your schedule tomorrow ok! "
Aitana was baffled, she hailed from a family of football fans; actually a family of Real Madrid supporters - and while yes, she harbored a schoolgirl crush on Sergio Ramos, it was just that; a schoolgirl crush and she didn't think much of it. What are the odds that she'd meet him? yet here she was, about to go out with her best friend on a double date, " LIA! I HATE YOU " she yells to which she hears a laugh in response.
" You'll love me when you capture Sergio's heart "
Aitana arrives to the restaurant, as Emilia texted her that she would be running late; not thinking much of it, she approaches the waiter who leads her to the table where finds Sergio sitting there, dressed in a suit sans tie, the first few buttons of his shirt were open allowing her a sneak peek of his tattoos; his gaze was cast on his phone before he looked up to meet her gaze, and smiled before saying with a gentle tone, " Aitana, right? "
" Yes " Aitana manages to squeal out before an embarrassed laugh escapes her lips. " I'm sorry "
Sergio chuckles, standing up to extend his hand out; " It's fine, it's nice to meet you, I'm Sergio "
" I know " Aitana blurts out, her face growing warm as she manages to scramble out a few words, " I mean, my family are Real Madrid fans, and so am I " she laughs, " I don't know why I'm being like this "
" It's fine " Sergio assures her with a smile, helping her to her seat before he sat back down. " I think it's cute "
Aitana giggles " well you'll be seeing a lot more tonight " before she looks around, " Is it me or did they purposefully do this? "
Sergio smirks, " I'm sure they did, especially since Kylian said that he had car troubles "
" Wait a minute " Aitana's eyes widened, " So did Emilia? " she shakes her head. " I knew it "
" I don't mind though, you seem like a lovely girl " Sergio states. " Do you mind? "
Aitana was about to object, especially since; she was sitting across from the man she has a crush on, a stupid crush she had worked hard enough to bury. " I ... I don't mind "
The conversation between them flowed freely, Sergio recounts old stories from his time in Sevilla and Real Madrid, a few anecdotes here and there which elicited a laugh from Aitana whom in turn shared stories from her childhood and how she came to love baking, " It's stupid but I like the fact that sweet treats can help someone feel good, whether they're on a diet and they're cheating " she laughs, " or just, in a feel good mood "
" That's nice " Sergio smiles before adding. " I might have to try some of your sweets sometime "
Aitana hides her red face behind the wine glass which prompted Sergio to ask, " How come a beautiful girl like you hasn't found someone? "
" Men don't seem keen on a girl that buries herself in the kitchen twenty four seven, they want a girl like my friend Emilia who likes to go out, have fun and just be wild " Aitana shrugs, " I'm more of a quiet person, that can ramble about the finest desserts, old classical movies and football but I like to have fun, just on my own terms "
" What's your definition of fun then? " Sergio asks, curious by her explanation.
" A nice stroll under the street lights, a picnic when the weather is good, a homemade meal with a good company " Aitana said, swallowing the sip of red wine. " Erm, a cozy movie night where I can be comfortable and not have to be all dressed up, like don't get me wrong I love dates, and dressing up but I also love the lazy chill aspects "
Sergio nods, his eyes softening at every single thought she mentioned. " That's quite lovely, and whoever doesn't like that is an idiot in my opinion "
" Noted " Aitana mutters, " How about you? "
" Me " Sergio echoes, " I guess you can say that I haven't found the right woman that sees me for more than just my reputation or my money, some are either scared by what they see and some are turned on and only want sex " he laughs.
" Oh dear " Aitana giggles, unaware of the smile that adorned his lips at the sound.
" I'm more than just a raging Spaniard " Sergio states, " And I just did not find someone that appreciates it "
" Hm " Aitana nods, " Maybe you haven't looked harder "
" Or maybe, I might just have found her " Sergio smiles before he adds, " Would you like to share a piece of red velvet cake? "
" Oooh, it's my favorite " Aitana beams, " was that a lucky guess? "
" Maybe " Sergio grins.
After they'd shared the dessert, Sergio suggests a walk at the nearby park and much like their time spent in the restaurant, they'd definitely enjoyed each other's company - conversing about their future plans. "
" Do you ever plan on going home? " Sergio asks her.
" If the opportunity arises, then sure " Aitana nods. " You? "
" Same here, if there's a chance but right now I'm enjoying life " Sergio said before smiling, " And enjoying my time with you "
Aitana giggles, hiding her face with her hand which made Sergio point out, " You're so cute when you do that "
" Stop, I'm already embarrassed enough " Aitana laughs, her heart racing when Sergio placed his jacket around her.
They continued to walk around until Sergio suggested that it was time to go, he drives her back to her home and offers to walk her up to her apartment, just before she unlocks her door, Sergio grabs her hand to say, " I really had fun tonight, and to be honest, from all they've said about you! I'm really interested to see if this will go somewhere, so what do you say to another date? "
Aitana chews on her bottom lip, before placing her hand around the back of his neck to press a soft kiss to his lips; she pulls back a minute later and smiles, " You have my number now, text me? " she said, " Goodnight "
Sergio pulls her again for another kiss then smiles, " Goodnight "
Aitana walks in and closes the door behind her with a big smile, she pulls out her phone and sees a text message from Sergio, after she set his contact name, she sends a text message to Emilia.
I hate you, but I love you so much.
Minutes later she received a cheeky response.
Love you too, future Mrs. Sergio Ramos <3

i saw ur post abt black star right after reading it and I'd love for u to elaborate lol my biggest problem w it was Akira disliking/not forgiving akechi... like i know it was written before royal and im not even THAT big of a shuake shipper but reading akira as anything other than in love with akechi is just. Wrong. my only other problem w it was how it treated prison like the only other option for akechi besides death, and anyway akechi would have chosen death regardless. It's crazy how both of those huge flaws were disproven in royal and how they're most likely the cause for fan misinterpretation today. still a good plot and i liked the other characterizations but like. the conclusion of akechi going to jail and akira supporting that above all is just so wrong
Oh yeah Akira's feelings toward Akechi were a huge reason why I had to dnf, easily one of the worst aspects by far. And it sucks because otherwise Akira's characterization was SO good. OP understood him but they did not understand Akechi and that extended to Akira, sadly.
And yeah, the jail thing is both baffling and Bad. Akechi does not need to go to jail. Can we please stop believing in punitive justice even when it makes no sense. Akechi doesn't even get what he deserves anyway because he doesn't go on trial for most of his crimes (like, you know, the murder) and then he gets off easy getting to join the shadow ops months into his sentence. After all that set up about him needing to get what he deserves/justice being served only for that to Very Much Not Happen. Because if Akechi DID get what he "deserved" under our justice system he'd get life in prison at best. It's hypocritical.
Possibly my biggest gripe other than the stupid insistence that Akechi go to jail is Akechi's characterization, though. It's alllll wrong. And like, to be fair, it was kind of impossible to know that it was wrong at the time because Royal hadn't come out yet. In black star Akechi is portrayed as absolutely, 100% unremorseful and gets angry at the idea of having to pay for his crimes. Which just. isn't. in character for him.
I kind of went into this with my recent post about Akechi and regrets, but there's another aspect this take on Akechi is completely missing. And that's Akechi and debts. He absolutely recognizes that what he did is wrong. He did it despite knowing it was wrong. But his reaction isn't going to be "how dare you suggest I turn myself in." It's going to be "I should be in jail already and I will do my best to repay my debts as far as I am able." Not in a guilty sort of way (at least outwardly), but a pragmatic one. There's a reason Akechi turns himself in for you, and it's not just about making Shido pay. It's about making things right, both to Joker and the world in general.
Akechi thinks of justice in extremely punitive terms. If you do wrong, you deserve to have wrongs done to you in turn. This applies to both others and himself. It's what leads him to his actions, and why he willingly sacrificed himself and then later turns himself in. It's why he hates the idea of being granted mercy in Maruki's reality. In his eyes, he doesn't deserve anything more than death and/or prison. He hurt people, and so now it's time for him to reap the consequences.
The author of black star has it completely backwards. Akechi's arc shouldn't be learning that he needs to face consequences. He wants to face consequences. He wants to die/go to jail because he thinks he's worthless and doesn't deserve anything better. That's his starting point of any post-canon arc. Giving him jail time is giving him exactly what he wants.
Personally, I think punitive justice as a concept is complete bullshit. I'm not gonna get into the nitty gritty of that here. But my point stands regardless--and whether you believe in punitive justice or not, objectively the more interesting direction to take an Akechi redemption is to force him to live life to the fullest. That is unironically the worst punishment you could give him. Force him to face the consequences of living when he thinks he should be dead, of going through the painful and difficult process of recovery, and being forced to interact with and reconcile with the people he hurt after acknowledging that hurt not pragmatically, but personally.
I don't want to read a story about Akechi learning to accept that he has to go to jail. it's stupid, out of character, and counter to my core values as a person. That's why I stopped reading black star. I want to see Akechi learning to live. To me, that is a far more in-character and interesting concept to explore.

What do you think the world was like a few years before humanity got wiped? With blood being a known fuel source and v1 existing and v2 being made even though peace was already achieved?
honestly i can't fully come to a conclusion on that - all i can really say is that i think things sound incredibly bizarre and something odd was definitely going on with regards to where humanity was at the time. for a timeline, we know that there was a great war, one bad enough to warrant the commissioning of v1's development as well as, presumably, the need to create machines dependent on blood rather than traditional fuel sources. i talked about this a little before, but that to me suggests that the earth was likely drained of many of its resources because of the war, and the only reliable means to continue to power the machines apparently ubiquitous to every corner of society was blood. like it's possible that even non-combat models were powered through blood considering the terminal entry for the nailgun (although it's left vague and those machines may have needed to defend themselves due to others trying to strip them of their parts rather than steal their blood...BUT I DIGRESS). this provides a pretty good sense of scale for the final war, which must have been massive and caused amounts of suffering as well as a certain callousness never before seen (after all, people likely got used to blood as a fuel source knowing full-well where it must have come from) however, things after the war is where it gets way, way weirder.
so the great peace is achieved - how is unknown, but it seems this brutal, gigantic, all-encompassing war was brought quickly to a full, total stop. at least it seems as much, since v1 had to be quickly scrapped and they scrambled to put v2 in its place to suit this new, entirely at peace world. and we know v1 wasn't the only machine to lose its place, with others like the sentry being too specialized to find any niche in a world without combat and streetcleaners similarly shelved without any pollution to attend to (and that's another thing!!! the new peace fixed the climate crisis as well!!!!) but all i keep thinking is that humanity must be irrevocably altered, that going through a war of that scale changes everything about how a society must function and how these are populations now accustomed to using other humans as fuel for their machines. who achieved the new peace, how was it reached, and what did it look like when they believed v2 could be viable in any sense? it's baffling honestly, but i have to imagine this peace just wasn't as peaceful as it seemed on the surface. maybe to the average person that had made it out alive, but where did the pollution go? how did they stop a war so massive dead in its tracks? unless, of course, blood as fuel was now being applied to many, many more aspects of society. that, in a twisted sense, perhaps helped the new peace as everyone now had access to the premiere resource to fuel the world. (i'm not entirely convinced this is the case, but it's all so bizarre that something doesn't add up imo)
then the hell expeditions came. why, in an era of profound peace, do people now feel the need to explore something like hell? was it merely scientific curiosity, but surely the danger it presented would ward people away from it no matter the cost, that it would be sealed away to protect that peace. a charitable reading is perhaps this society is so enlightened that they wanted to help in some sense, agonized by the idea of human souls in eternal suffering. but to me, i think this population, so hardened by a terrible war, simply could no longer fear something like hell. a war that warrants blood-fueled machines on a mass scale is already hell on earth, so why not go to hell if it's there to see. and perhaps they thought it could provide them something, in an earth so hollowed of its natural resources - we know it has "hell energy" and harnessing blood, maybe humans thought they could harness this as well (an aside since it would be mixing classical sources, but paradise lost pictures hell as a place ripe with all the metals of the earth so traditional fuel might be found there as well) so for me, this is a callous, unafraid people, ones that believe the worst has been and that they are now untouchable in their apparently well-secured peace. interestingly, i think v1 was maintained and kept up with certain developments as it seems to know to head directly for hell if it wishes to amass blood for itself. it makes me wonder why something like v1/v2 weren't repurposed themselves for the hell expeditions - too expensive to risk? too precious as their only models? or was it something less innocent, that maybe the two of them showed worrying signs about their obedience or intelligence to the point that they would only ever be deployed if the worst came to pass?
finally, what happened in the end is fascinating as well, especially when we look into the ferryman's diary which seems to account humanity's fall - "Some calamity has struck the mortal world (...) A million weeping souls pouring in each day that the shores can barely contain. (...) Then one day, the current shifted. Wave after wave for minutes on end of millions, billions, as though the throat of the world was cut wide and the head wretched back to speed the pour." humans were dying in mass amounts until, one day, all of them died immediately. billions wiped out together. what could have done that? minos references the machines in man's downfall so it's likely they rose up in some sense, but for every single person to die all at once so that none remain seems unlikely for the machines alone. at this point, it's highly probable that hell itself orchestrated humanity's end, given the document discovered in the arg, and it's possible too that the terminals coordinated with it. they are bored. hell is bored. the document warns them to stop the expeditions before hell reaches the surface. and so all that makes me wonder is how v1 was woken up - we see its boot sequence when starting a new game, so apparently it was asleep. did it see any of the destruction that befell humanity (minos says "the crimes of thy kind" when speaking to it, which keeps v1's involvement ambiguous)? was it woken with a failsafe or did someone boot it up just before their own death as a last resort for help? i'm sorry this is largely a bunch of questions and fairly vague, but something about the new peace is off to me in a way i don't have a full answer to yet!! but i can't imagine the final war left humanity intact and i think something was seriously wrong with society to go seeking out hell.

I feel like ‘hey it’s fine for this to be how you feel, but acting as if it’s a hard and fast rule when educating doesn’t really work if you’re also acknowledging that it’s just your opinion’ should be easier to understand and yet,
Yeah. I think the original op and I kinda reached our mutual understanding on this but then other people are still going as if I was invalidating the discomfort, or making things up?
The discomfort is understandable and allowed and I respect that. The request that gentiles use specific language is great and fine. But the facts that I presented about actual Jewish mourning practice & liturgy are not obscure, unpopular, or even new, and they're also not my opinion.
My opinion is that you shouldn't mislead people (intentionally or unintentionally) or state things that simply aren't true when asking for someone to respect your discomfort or to acknowledge a preferred practice. My opinion is that educating gentiles, or resisting Christian hegemony — shouldn't mean rewriting current Jewish practice, or past longstanding Jewish history. My opinion is that we ought to genuinely take the intent of the speaker into account, and to ask ourselves if the other person is truly trying to convey kindness and compassion in a time of grief in a way that we do, in fact, also use.
And then ask myself like other things such as:
- did they do this to emphasize Christianity at me (hegemonically, evangelically), or is this simply the language they know and the way they know how to convey this care? I can be uncomfortable either way, but in one case I am uncomfortable with a unique individual enacting a system of hegemony, and in another I am just frustrated with the system itself and not the person. Sometimes articulating that difference is helpful and frankly, healing. We live in a society, idk.
- is it possible that somehow, I have been this person, saying something not technically wrong, but perhaps not the best or most comfortable thing for the person hearing me? (Almost certainly). Intent is not everything, but like, it does contextualize things! It obviously matters if I mean to be respectful but come off wrong footed due to someone else's feelings on something — that's very different than intentionally trying to condescend or diminish.
Op probably did not intend for this to blow up. Tumblr randomly promoted a jumblr post to me, and I responded to correct a fact that part of their premise rested on. Jumblr had this same old discourse back in 2020, and even before that, and like, I reiterated old facts. It floats around and isn't new - this is a common claim people make ("Jews never say rest in peace,") that other people debunk every so often on this site. I don't mind if their conclusion is still "I don't like that."
It's like...analogy: I am not asking everyone to feel comfortable with every verse or mitzvah in the Torah. I understand and appreciate that certain things in the Torah also make me uncomfortable, and those things aren't the same for every Jew. But I can sympathize even if we don't have the same discomforts. I can wrestle with those things, I can emphasize what I think is better or more comfortable within the Torah, what I think takes higher importance in Torah over the uncomfortable things, I can question how I understand the verse, I can question my own discomfort and other's comfort, why we differ and what that means — all of that — but whether or not I'm comfortable, the thing is still in the Torah.
I think I'm also just baffled by some of the responses like - not the ones from op, but everyone else responding to me? The logic is...really weird! I didn't address half the arguments made because they're just strange. And then half of them are like...what do they even intend when they say this? Like this idea that burial and memorial liturgy shouldn't count in a discussion about how Jews talk when memorializing our dead, because it's just "liturgy." That argument made me feel like I was in the twilight zone lmao. I'm not going to apologize for understanding our religion lol.
Also absolutely not a single soul addressed my citing Chabad and Shiva.com (which is expressly aimed at helping even non-jews understand how Jews deal with death, mourning, and burial!) And that is BONKERS to me.

The Player glared at the Knight- after all, he was right. They had come back to see things through, to watch the conclusion. And they had no argument for that. And knowing that the Player had no argument made the Knight grin. "Now, the reason you'd come back to this extent... baffles me. Why not just go back to how you were? Why take the effort to disassociate yourself from the puppet you used?" This got an angry reaction from not just the Player, but the team of Ralseis as well. "Their name is KRIS!" they shouted, almost simultaneously. But the Lightner just chuckled. "It doesn't matter what it was. It was a puppet at the time. It couldn't make decisions on it's own." they said... only for the Player to interrupt.
"And how did you know that from where you were that whole time? You couldn't follow Kris into the Light World. You couldn't follow them into the deepest depths of the castle, where Jevil was. And those were where they showed just how much of a life they had, even when the link first formed. They weren't a puppet. They may have been a vessel of sorts, like my body is." "But they were not a puppet. Things can live without a SOUL, after all... Kris was alive the whole time. But without a SOUL, they were a blank slate, which you saw as not being alive. And while the SOUL was left without any method of normal control, that was what allowed them to live- to gain experience from their surroundings, much like what one would do in the early days of their life. Their SOUL was what allowed that to start- but, I'd say by now..." "They don't even need me anymore." The Knight looked confused, maybe even startled by the sudden show of confidence. "Wh... what in the Angel's name are you talking about?! You know nothing about SOULs! You can't possibly know anything about them!"
The Player chuckled mildly. "Sadly for you, this experiment of yours came after something else- something that bears a lot more resemblance to this world than you think. And seeing those resemblances let me piece some things together- things that work the same way here as they did in that other 'existence'. I'm uncertain whether that one was real and separate, like this one- but I know enough to see the connections."
"At this point... I don't think that the SOUL in Kris, is actually my own SOUL. It's theirs. I'm just... cutting the strings. After all, if a puppet can dance without directions from the one holding strings, then it would be able to dance just as well if there were no strings at all. But the SOUL... wasn't the strings. It was what allowed the strings to connect. But, I'm starting to see that when I cut those strings, the SOUL wasn't removed at all. If that had happened, they'd just... fade. Back into the empty shell." "But they aren't empty, they're still moving. They're still LIVING." the Player said, to confused reactions from the group. "But... how do you know that? Kris still has the SOUL, and you said it'd unlink sometime soon... you're saying it like you already unlinked!" The Knight scoffed at this. "You'll see soon enough, in the end. They're a puppet, a vessel. No more. You took their SOUL from them, and with it, their life."
"You killed Kris."
And yet, the Player just chuckled, staring down the Knight- making even the Knight uneasy.
"You know the interesting thing about messing with time..? It can change when certain events happen. And, well, my memories feel a bit changed... you reminded me to think about that not long ago, didn't you?"
The Knight went visibly pale- which, in the Dark World, spoke volumes. "...you... you..."
The Player nodded. "I already unlinked. Turns out, my past self saw everything going on, and seeing Kris like this... well, they felt guilty. They disconnected sooner than I had before this. The timeline shifted- and I'm still here. Because I felt like I could do more than just that. I wanted to see things through, like you said."
"But I already disconnected. I did it a good amount earlier than I had thought... hah, gotta love those kinds of time travel shenanigans, huh?" they said, laughing. But the Knight wasn't smiling. In fact they looked visibly angry. "Y- you..! You GAVE your SOUL to them?! Then how do YOU still have a SOUL?! It should have been either them or you!! ...What did you do?! What rule did you change when you were... out there?!" he spat, angry as a raging bull.
But the Player laughed more. "I didn't change anything, Knight. This SOUL? It's mine. Always has been. I didn't quite realize it- but turns out that even people in my world have SOULs. They just never... show up. There's no reason for them to. So when I came in here, I took my SOUL with me. And that SOUL is using strings to control this vessel whenever I'm out there."
"The SOUL in Kris is all theirs."
---------------------------------
Kris was sitting on the bed in their house, waiting eagerly for the Player's SOUL to unlink, for that piece of them to be gone for good.
Nothing. Had they lied after all? But... there was no way. They were acting so genuine...
Still, something felt different. The SOUL... felt different.
Kris tried to stand up... they did.
They tried to walk to the birdcage. They did.
Open it up... done.
No resistance.
They reached out, preparing to pull out their SOUL again- bracing for the pain. But instead, it emerged as though a battle began, without the box that contained it. That was... new.
So they put it in the cage and closed it. Now they could see what was going on.
Kris began to move towards the bed. The SOUL moved in that direction, too.
That was new for sure.
They open the cage and focus some... and they got their SOUL to exit the cage on their own.
They started to move it around, up, down... left, right... and it worked. Not even a moment of hesitation or waiting- nothing inhibiting it.
And they felt free.
---------------------------------
The Knight was frozen. Such an obvious observation- and it had passed right over them. "But... then how did you access the SAVE state of theirs, and cause all this?"
The Player chuckled some. "At that point, it was still Kris' SOUL, if you recall. You hadn't pulled me in, my SOUL wasn't in the equation. When you pulled me in, my SOUL was pulled in with me. And that separated your link- in fact, it weakened my connection as it was. But of course, there was still my past self to deal with. They still had connection, while I didn't."
With every explanation given, the Knight wanted to give a counterargument- but somehow, these outlandish reasons... were valid. "...you... how do you plan all this out? How are you doing all of this?"
The Player laughed. "You know, I could easily just pretend I planned this, and say something on the lines of thinking in four dimensions. But honestly? I'm just rolling with the punches. Memories changed? Cool, time to make use of that. Pulled into this place? All right then, I'll work with that. Sometimes one of the best plans is not to have one. It's impossible to predict a plan that doesn't exist. Patterns are helpful- but they may not work forever."
The Knight growled in anger. "...so all of this... all of these changes, all of this absolute CHAOS you've strewn across my carefully laid plan... all of this has just been you doing... whatever comes to mind at that moment?! All of these things you do to ruin my progress... and you're not even planning them out?"
The Player chuckled a bit. "Not a bit. I'm not willing to try and learn that much about this time travel bullshit, I just want to make use of it to get this done."
With this, the Knight was seething mad. It looked like he was ready to attack, but in his current situation, he was not only outnumbered, but the Player could easily just pull the same stunt. He wasn't prepared to fight.
But as the ground beneath them shook, his face of rage shifted... and he looked quite happy with the quakes.
"...ah, but it seems it was all in vain!" he said, almost cackling.
---------------------------------
Kris was still trying out their newfound freedom- and the SOUL that belonged to them, and ONLY them this time!- when they heard knocking on the door. So they went out to where Toriel was, her already waiting for the arrival, before seeing Kris’ eyes- BROWN eyes... and as the door opened...
"Mom! Kris!"
"I'm home!"
And with that... we will reach beyond the end. The Player and Kris have separate SOULs, Kris is free- AND with a SOUL intact, interestingly enough!- the Knight has gotten his usual plans taken screwball thanks to weird time travel bullshit (love when the past changes), and the world is falling apart. Oh, and Azzy's here now too. Also one of the FEW times I will ever go beyond the Player's scope of vision- as it was something I felt needed shown. This will likely only happen more often if it makes the story a bit better- otherwise, we'll only know what the Player knows. But we'll see. I'm pretty excited to have Kris with their own SOUL, as opposed to split control with the Player. Yes, I was a bit worried about how to explain the time-travel again. But the differentiation between when the Player was in the Over World and when they were in the Light and Dark Worlds was perfect for that, as... well, they had their SOUL in the Over World with them. Why they can't SAVE and LOAD in the Over World? Good question, you get the gif! (You know the one.) I would say more about this but it's a lot to say, and would be difficult without potentially sharing possible story paths. Chaos, chaos. Hehe. It's a lot for this part, and honestly my brain was working overtime to tie it all together the best I could. I'm not even sure if there's any inconsistencies because of how much happened. If you do manage to spot any, then let me know. I'd really appreciate it and it'll help me with future parts as well. I also feel really bad because it's been essentially three months. THREE. WHOLE. MONTHS. College is annoying as all get out, and I wish I could just do this all the time. I enjoy writing, and I wish I could do it more, but with college, I often find myself doing other stuff, seeing this, wanting to do more, and then finding myself doing other stuff again. I highly appreciate the asks people send as reminders, since they show me that yes, people do still care about this. And that's kinda my motivation. Knowing people enjoy this story so much makes me honestly really happy, and makes it easier to work on this knowing that there is purpose to it. With any luck, I can get myself back into writing this more often, and we'll have a score of story parts (one score is equal to 20 for those who need to know) soon enough. If I didn't absolutely butcher this one at least. Previous Part | First Part | Next Part LynxGriffin's Paper Trail Comic (This part was almost exclusively based off of the Finale part of the original Paper Trail comic, with added portions that are unique to the story. I think this will be the last story for at least a good while that will be directly based off the comic itself. There will definitely be elements from past original comic pages used, but there's going to be more original aspects from here out. Hoo boy, I got work to do.)

I am lowkey highkey obsessed with Thomas. He comes across as having a streak of earnestness in some things I read (it was either his knightly brotherhood agreement with Charles Duke of Orleans or his letter to Henry about how awful his situation in Ireland was) but I also like the hotheaded, reckless image of him. I think a lot of modern historians either overlook him because he wasn't around for Henry VI's minority or just tend to assume that the Battle of Bauge tells us everything about his personality and thus we end up at the hotheaded, reckless idiot image.
(also re: Henry; I think CGW says something like he could have been a good king but the way he became king meant he could never be a good king because usurpation left too great a stain on his character. That makes a lot of sense to me. Plus he got so sick just as he was starting to gain stability on the throne… you can almost sort of read this trend of Henry being like "time for kingly awesomeness! (a fun party ala Edward III; going on a military campaign)" and then ending up having another rebellion or health crisis. The dickhead was still doing it up to 1412 - he was going to lead Thomas's expedition! Until he couldn't…)
(I have written and re-written this so many times to try and clearly explain my view and I'm still not happy with it v.v)
I kind of like the mental image of Thomas as a hot head, but a hot head with a heart of gold iykwim. It really annoys me that we don't know more about him, because reading about his stint in Ireland and campaign in France knowing how much people wanted him to be heir instead of Hal really just... baffled me. The failure of those two things don't exclusively or even predominately fall on his head, it just doesn't explain why people were so ready to back him over Hal, who already had a quashed rebellion under his belt (it'd be easy to brush it off as just people really hating Hal, which they did seem to, but they also seemed to genuinely want Thomas). I think it mostly comes down to Thomas' strengths being in areas that weren't necessarily conducive to leading a country, the way Hal, John, and likely Philippa's were, but we only know of those strengths because we have been able to evaluate their and their successors achievements to examine what does make a good monarch.
CGW coming to that conclusion about Henry IV didn't make a lot of sense to me, because that book did a really good job at detailing all the ways Henry was ill-equipped to be king ^.^'''' A lot of it was definitely because of him being a usurper, like being unable to convince parliament to raise taxes because they would leverage his own promises against him, or his habit of basically never standing up for himself and then going too far in the other direction, realising how much he screwed up, and then swinging too far back again (see the Scrope debacle). And even without all the ways his being a usurper affected him, there are so many instances of him straining against the monetary confines he now has to live with (I understand why he wanted the Duchy of Lancaster to be kept separate from the crown. Terrible outcome, but understandable), or wanting to be on crusade and not being able to because he is king, or the trouble he went through for marrying Joanna because it wasn't a good marriage for a king... all of it very much suggests to me that again, the 'princely virtues' he was so often praised for over Richard did nothing to actually prepare him for running a government, and there is a lot that suggests to me he didn't enjoy it. I guess you give him more credit that I do

Neon Genesis Evangelion 25
Tumblr media
It... really isn't though.
Last episode, Shinji killed the last Angel, albeit reluctantly, and that pretty much wraps up the main conflict of the series. So now we just need to wrap up all the loose ends. You know, answer the lingering questions such as:
What is an Eva?
Where did the Angels come from?
When did the Second Angel show up? Did I miss that somewhere?
What's the deal with Rei?
What was SEELE up to?
What was Gendo Ikari up to?
No, really, what's the deal with Rei?
What actually caused Second Impact?
Where did the Dead Sea Scrolls come from, and why did SEELE and Gendo believe the apparent predictions that it made?
Why did they need fourteen-year-old children to pilot the Evas?
What is the Human Instrumentality Project, exactly?
I'm not kidding, what the fuck is the deal with Rei? You can't just dodge the question; she's one of the principal characters. You put her on all the merchandise for crying out loud.
Did Pen-Pen get reunited with Misato after she sent him away to live with friends just before the final battle?
Wow, that's a longer list than I realized. Anyway, Episode 25 takes a long hard look at those unanswered questions and then wads it up and throws it in the trash, then sets the trash can on fire and burns down the entire house. Then Episode 25 goes back in time and erases the very concept of information from the fundamental design of the universe, so that no coherent answers can possibly exist.
If you enjoyed Neon Genesis Evangelion, and are curious to know what happens after Episode 24, Episode 25 wants you to know that it hates you. When you watch Episode 25, you know less about this show than you did before you watched it.
Now, I expected something kind of abstract and surreal. I've heard about this. Fans were dissatisfied with the way the series ended, which eventually led to the release of "End of Evangelion", which promised to deliver a more satisfying conclusion to the series.
I never quite understood, until today, just how dissatisfied the fans really were at the time. I feel like I heard once, long ago, someone complaining that NGE was simply unfinished. Like it got cancelled or something or the writers gave up without writing the rest of it. But that appears to be untrue, so I'm left to assume that whoever said that was just being sarcastic. It's like that xkcd cartoon about the Matrix movie, and the characters lament the fact that they never made a sequel. The joke is that they know there were sequels, but they prefer to pretend that they didn't exist.
And I think at some point I found out that End of Evangelion was like a retelling of the story, but I assumed it was just because you see that a lot in anime. Adolescence of Utena basically does a whole other version of the story in the Utena TV series, basically.
But no, I eventually found out that fans just really, really hated Episodes 25 and 26, and EoE was a make-good. Like, it literally functions as a new Episode 25 and 26 for the TV show, from what I understand. I was looking over an episode list on Wikipedia, and that's how it's listed. There's Episodes 1-26, and then 25A and 26A.
That's wild. I've been curious about this the whole time, and now I'm here and man, Episode 25 is some serious bullshit. I kind of expected it to be weird, and maybe inconclusive, but still in a good kind of way. Like... well, Revolutionary Girl Utena is probably a good example. I watched that show a few years ago and I'm still baffled by most of it, but it had a charm and beauty to it that kept me engaged. I would have preferred a more coherent narrative, but I still found enjoyment from it.
Tumblr media
But NGE 25 just sucks. There's no other way to say it. It doesn't advance the plot, it doesn't reveal any secrets or solve any mysteries. It doesn't really do much of anything. I'll try to explain this mess, but fair warning: I don't think there's much to unpack here.
So we start with Shinji agonizing over the way he killed Kaworu, the 17th Angel, at the end of the last episode. This might be promising, except he already agonized over this at the end of Episode 24. I mean, he could continue where he left off. That would be fine, except this episode even repeats the same scene where he talks to Misato about it and she assures him that he did the right thing. No new insights are introduced here.
Tumblr media
Shinji imagines himself in the grasp of Eva Unit 01, and laments that he still has to pilot the Eva, even after all that's happened. Uh, who said you have to keep piloting the Eva, sport? I'm not saying this is true or untrue, but why does Shinji assume this when he has no more enemies to fight, and his dad hasn't assigned him to a new mission?
This is what pisses me off. In a good episode, the story would just move forward in linear time. The battle with Kaworu would be over, and everyone would dust themselves off and ask what's next. Gendo would either tell everyone what to do, or they'd defy Gendo and try to stop him. Or something. Someone would have to tell Shinji that he will have to continue piloting the Eva, or that he never has to pilot it again, and he could react to that information.
Instead, we have him whining about facts that aren't even in evidence. Does he have to keep piloting the Eva or not? We don't know! Neither does he! And we can't find out because this stupid episode is some sort of dream sequence/acid trip instead of being set in the "real" world!
Tumblr media
And again, I kind of knew it would be like this, that NGE ended with Shinji having some weird introspection instead of a proper finale. But what drives me nuts is that we really don't learn anything new about him. He hates his dad for abandoning him! He does what he's told because he's desperate for the approval of others! He's afraid of people hating him! He hates piloting the Eva but he does it because people appreciate him for it! We already know this! Dammit, we've been hearing about it for the entire run of the show.
Tumblr media
Hey, did you know Asuka's bio-mom hanged herself when she was little? Yes, you did, because we found out in Episode 24. Episode 25 just... shows us all over again like it's new information. It doesn't do anything new with it. It just rehashes the same observation that Asuka craves attention and glory and praise because she fears losing her identity without it. Nothing is added nor resolved.
Tumblr media
I think the one new tidbit we get from this episode is that Rei has longed for the day when she would no longer be of any use to Gendo Ikari, and he would discard her. She waits for death, but now she fears it, which is pretty dark. Assuming that this is even the "real" Rei making that statement. We'll come back to that.
Tumblr media
Oh, hey, Ritsuko Akagi is dead. When did that happen?
Tumblr media
And so is Misato. Okay, maybe we're getting back to the real world, and seeing events play out. Gendo has triumphed over the Angels, and now he's liquidating his allies as he moves on to the next phase of his plan...
Tumblr media
Wait, no, they're alive again, and arguing over the merits of the Human Instrumentality Project, which Ritsuko claims is designed to merge all human consciousness together into one big collective mind. Except... I don't believe that explanation, because it's being presented in a surreal fantasy. Ritsuko had a bullet hole in her a second ago and now she's fine. How can I accept any information presented in this scene?
Tumblr media
Episode 25 then examines Misato's character for a while, under the pretense of proving some sort of oblique thesis, but in reality it just slut shames her for having casual sex with Kaji. The episode accuses her of giving in to base, carnal desires, and she screams denial after denial. I kept waiting for some deep dark secret to be at the heart of all of this. Like Misato only drinks and fucks to hide some secret shame, but no. She just drinks and fucks, because she's a grown-ass woman who can do whatever she wants when she's off-duty. This isn't catharsis, it's just filler disguised as drama. Who is she even arguing with?
Tumblr media
Finally, Shinji finds himself in an empty theater, surrounded by other characters from the show. Like a Greek chorus, they inform him that this is but one of many realities, and what he's experiencing now is the reality he chose, a world cut off from everything that could possibly cause him discomfort. Also, he can't escape this fate, because he chose it, even though he repeatedly denies doing so.
And this is where I wrote off the episode as trash, because the like "This is real, but only one of the many realities" is the biggest cop out ever. So we're saying everything in this episode both happened and didn't happen? Then why does any of it matter?
This is why I question the point of Rei admitting she longs for death. If the real Rei thought this way, then it would be powerful. We know Rei. We've come to care about her over the course of the series. But the Rei we see in this episode may only be a figment of Shinji's imagination. Or she may not even be that. What she admits or denies in this episode is meaningless.
Tumblr media
Anyway, yeah, fuck this episode. The only takeaway here is that Shinji has somehow gotten lost in his own head. He created a private haven for himself, but it's nothing more than a prison. Whooptee-shit.
Tumblr media
Yeah, yeah, the next episode preview has deteriorated to mere script drafts instead of visuals. It's not cute anymore.

Just saw your comment on another post where you said Danneel manipulated Jensen with this TW idea. She may have proposed the idea but in no way did she manipulate him. He had every opportunity to say no during this whole process and he didn't. He is just as responsible. Don't sound like an AA and give him a free pass.
Anon, before rushing to make assumptions you should have asked what exactly I meant, in fact, if you would have read previous post you wouldknow that I stated that Danneel manipulatively proposed the prequel focus on John and Mary because she knew it would lead to her involvement and the love story theme would cascade into the Ackles' otherwise lacking chemistry. Jensen obviously went along with that so why would I need to remention it each time?
Don't be like an AA and jump to conclusions and think only in black and white. What I wrote was about Danneel and had nothing to do with Jensen within a context where I was explaining her mindset. I've commented his shortcomings quite extensively, lies included so I am baffled by your ask. Is everyone an AA now if they so much as make a statement you don't find resonance with? If so that's a very toxic way to think and how's that any different than policing people's views and ideas?
Finally, if you expect me to hate Jensen you are on the wrong blog, I don't hate anyone, that would mean being overinvested and that's unhealthy. People can like or dislike Jensen however much they want, it's not their place or right to tell others to which extend to do so as well. Me included.
I use the term AA to refer to the extremely unbalanced fans who live on manic infatuation and bordeline psychosis when it comes to Jensen so I find it interesting that if I state a general phrase that doesn't include him and isn't even about him you are comparing me to that. It seems the term AA is being easily thrown around on whoever expresses views you disagree with.
Not every AA is toxic just like not every heller is, people can love what they love to extremes while also being respectful of others and in harmony with fandom.
Whatever I sound like is my choice and I am free to be who I am, if you dislike anything, feel free to unfollow, block, filter, whatever best matches your preferences. I'm not going to censor myself just because it makes this or that faction of fandom uncomfortable, people can manage their emotions and choices.

I took the social post today as an “ending.” It’s the conclusion of the series of little promo videos they did with Kanthony, from Edwina in the middle to this. I’m guessing they’re winding down S2 press and will make announcements about whatever S3 is about soon.
Marketing not centering the couple in promotion was obviously a deliberate decision but it still feels like they dropped the ball majorly. Kanthony are nevertheless the only relevant part of S2 (lol at how the cousin Jack plot was kept a huge secret and then no one cared). It baffles me how Simone and JB never even did a joint interview together. Photoshoots are also very standard for actors playing on screen couples. Like…Simone goes viral on Twitter / tiktok all the time, everyone’s talking about JB’s charisma and performance, perhaps the consensus about the season is their wild chemistry…how are you not going to attempt to leverage that?
Like Luke N is simply not going to inspire the thirst that JB did. Nor are people going to be swooning over a sauceless white couple. They’re gonna end up relying on JB and Simone to drum up the GP’s interest in season 3.
Makes sense. There is a bit of mystery surrounding what S3 will be about so whatever news we get will end the anticipation at least. But it also could very well be like opening Pandora's box.
Yeah to me the promo and marketing pre and post s2 has always been weird and annoying but I stopped complaining about it publicly because it did no one, especially myself any good.
I think JB and Simone are just super busy with postS2 projects. They do have to start shooting for S3 soon so I like to think they're just taking a bit of a breather from extra stuff. With Covid still being a huge deal, along with other things happening, traveling and making plans might not be as easy as we think. I do hope they end up doing a photoshoot sooner or later. And if we never get one? oh well.
Maybe this time the EW promo stuff will be heavily Kathony like it should've been before.
I'm not gonna comment on Luke N publicly but his fans, I'm sure, will enjoy his and Polins season when it comes. I think the GA is pretty on board with the show being an ensemble now. Going more ensemble heavy this recent season was smart because it keeps fans who are not interested in the next main couple entertained. Plus there isn't a couple amongst the Bridgertons that they could utilize in such a way as they could Kathony. Kate and Anthony really have become quite popular amongst the GA so boosting them up for the next season as well as any other future seasons they will be in will benefit Shondaland/Netflix
