How about: 91. “I remember everything.” Kanej
“You have to leave this fucking city.”
Inej is surprised to hear herself cuss. Even the years out at sea haven’t hardened her tongue like this- she curses, sure, at ropes and waves and wind. She doesn’t curse at people. It’s not an effective management technique.
But she has found the end of her patience for this nonsense.
No one really expected Kaz Brekker to live to see thirty. She’s not even sure Kaz, with his bravado and his theatrics that have only gotten worse over the years, thought he’d make it. But here they are, a month from his fucking birthday, and he’s laid up in bed with a bullet hole in his fucking body.
He’s putting on a good show of being strong, of ignoring the pain. But Inej can see the tense muscles of his jaw, the sweat that stands glittering on his forehead, the way he shifts his weight slowly and braces for each move.
“I don’t—” Kaz sighs, wincing as he presses his hand to the bloody hole in his side. It’s been bandaged, it’s been days, but he won’t let anyone call a healer and Inej is going to kill him if infection doesn’t.
“I don’t want to fight about this,” he finishes, and his voice is so hoarse and raw that Inej moves, grabbing the cool pitcher of water from his bedside table and pouring a careful glass for him. She’s used to a certain amount of gravel in his voice, but the pain makes listening to him feel like walking barefoot in the mountains.
“Kaz,” she sighs, using her sleeve to wipe the sweat from his brow as he drinks. He barely flinches. Progress. “I know what happened,” she says, meeting his eyes.
“Jesper has a big fucking mouth,” Kaz bites, and he’s not wrong. Jesper had told her. He had told her all about the little skiv who had waited for Kaz outside the Geldstraat tunnel, who had ambushed him as he’d been walking home from dinner with his friends.
And she knows the kid’s name. She’s known it for 12 years, since Kaz forced Pekka to his knees behind the Church of Barter.
Albie Rollins is in Ketterdam, and he’s gunning for the return of his father’s empire.
“I can handle him,” Kaz says, struggling to sit up in bed. Inej wants to press him back into the sheets, make him lie still and see reason. “I walked away from this one.”
She’s frustrated, she’s exhausted, and the man she loves is struggling in front of her. Inej doesn’t know how to get through to him. How she can make him see that if he lets this city kill him, she will never never forgive him.
“And what about the next one?” she asks. “Or the one after that? What happens when you’re forty or fifty or sixty and some little teenager puts a gun to your head and demands you say the name of his loved one, huh?” Inej snaps, her nerves frays. “All the saints hear my promise, when that kid comes and kills you for his brother or his mother or his cousin, I will—”
Inej swallows around the lump in her throat. She honestly doesn’t know what she’ll do. What her plan is. What it could possibly be.
“What?” he’s holding her gaze now, his eyes dark and private, even from her. But he’s listening. He’s actually listening to her. “What will you do?”
“I will set the fucking Wraith on fire and stand in the flames as she goes down around me,” she says, her voice barely a hiss in the quiet room. “I will let the world know that Kaz Brekker was the death of me, and I will find you in the next life and I will never, ever speak to you again. It— if you let this city bury you under the weight of your own gold, I will dig you up and give the gold to the fucking council before I bury you at sea with me.”
He nods once, breaking the eye contact they’ve both been holding. He hears her. He’s not ready to respond, but he hears what she’s saying. She can give him time to think about it.
Inej turns around, her back to him, and scrubs at her eyes with the heels of her hands. She’s not going to cry. Not over something that hasn’t happened yet.
“You know what the difference is?” Kaz says, his voice still strained, but soft. “Between me and Rollins?”
He waits for her to reply, but she doesn’t. She just waits for him to tell her.
“I remember.”
She turns to look at him, cataloguing the far away look on his face.
“I remember every person I put in the ground on my way up. Everyone I hurt. I remember their names. Their faces. I can’t forget them, I’ve tried. So when that kid puts me on his knees and demands I say that name, I promise you, I will say it.”
Now the tears are at the back of her throat, unbidden. She knows he has ghosts, they both do. But it suddenly strikes her just how haunted Kaz really is.
“All of them?” She asks, reaching down to take his hand
He doesn’t flinch away, just lets her lace their fingers together as he nods.
“Trust me,” he whispers. “I remember everything.”

I don't think in a modern world, the Crows would completely keep to themselves in a college setting like these weirdass Cullens the way it's often depicted.
Like yes, The Crows would be the core group, but let's be honest, Jesper and Inej would be friends with everyone. Jesper would be the type of guy you'd see sitting at every table, chatting and joking with all the guys and gals and being loved by everyone he comes across. He'd talk to the quiet shy people and try to make them feel included and he'd make everyone at his table laugh.
Inej would have deep and meaningful conversations with lots of other girls and try to get to know them in the most unbiased way possible, but her favorite topic would probably be different cultures, religion, food from different places from all around the world, social injustice and travels. When she doesn't have these sorts of discussions, she goofs off with her peers; often that's her crows, often that's Kaz, but often it's also other people. She's blunt and direct and maybe some people have an issue with that, but those aren't people she involves herself with. She trusted some of the girls with her story, which just makes them admire her even more for how strong she is.
Nina would be one of the most well-known and popular girls on the campus, but in a...controversial way. Like she probably wouldn't be as universally loved as Inej and Jesper because she's very...out there, people might think she's a bit radical, she knows how good she looks (and isn't afraid to show it) and has a sense of humor that is a little too direct. Lots of people would love her, but some would then talk behind her back. There would also be sexist dudes who think she's "too much" (sorry, Matty) and "an arrogant bimbo", and girls with internalized misogyny would say she's "too crass" and "trying too hard", but whatever room she enters, she always finds people to talk to.
Matthias would find a few buddies since he often can't relate to Kaz, Wylan and Jesper. He loves them, but the demon boy gets on his nerves occassionally (their peers still laugh about the time when he snapped at Kaz to "Shut up" after he sneezed) and the other two don't have ANY morals, ugh 🙄 His buddies don't even have to be religious; Matthias just wants some NORMAL friends, is that too much to ask? He'd also be liked by the girls as a "big brother" type figure because he looks out for them and often intently listens to conversations about why the girls always carry pepper spray around.
Wylan wouldn't really have that many friends, but his peers like him because of his "shock humor". Like, he's quiet and blushes easily, but then when someone says something stupid or offensive in class, Wylan will suddenly out of nowhere respond with the most witty, unhinged shit they've ever heard. Just for that, they respect him and make him part of their (well meaning) jokes. He's not "invisible", he's also not really "out there", but he's accepted as "one of them" and everyone talks fondly about him. They also accept the fact that he can't read and it probably even makes him more interesting to them.
Kaz (and I'm sorry, but I REFUSE to acknowledge that Kaz would wear a suit on campus. He'd wear a casual black shirt/hoodie and black jeans, fight me. Don't make him more obnoxious than he needs to be 😭 Also, his backstory stays the same!) would, surprisingly, also be liked by most people due to his dry sense of humor and his blunt way to put things. A bunch of others would be intimidated by him, but overall, he'd be one of the more popular ones. Maybe the fact that he's together with Inej has something to do with that, too. He gives off major "Idc who you are and what you've done, we're cool if you don't get on my nerves"- vibes. When the class doesn't know how to solve a task, he's the one they turn to. Kaz IS actually socially intelligent, he just chooses not to be in canon; I mean, the bitch is a theater kid, he can slip into any role, which speaks for his ability to empathize with others. In college he doesn't have much reason to act like a wet cat, so he doesn't. He's not exactly "friendly", he doesn't let anyone get too close, doesn't share anything personal and the "No touching rule" is something most people on campus are aware of, but he still likes to talk to other people and discuss things with them. His peers try to give him THE most difficult riddles they can find, hoping to find one he can't solve, and get frustrated when he knows the answer to all of them. Have I also mentioned that he's a magician? Like come on, people would eat that shit up! Yeah, he's moody, but he also lives for dramatics and performances. You're trying to tell me he WOULDN'T make coins appear and disappear just to see the looks on his peers' faces?

Mal: I wasn't shirtless when i died
Alina: in my mind you were
Jesper: i can't do it!
Wylan: you must!
Jesper: okay! (fakes stabbing Wylan who fakes a collapse) oh Mal, Rakva will honor your braveness, and i will always remember how much i love your abs...and personality and all that shit
Alina snifs: its like they were just there

Zoya: so..why did she choose that role?
Nikolai: she said it she wanted a loud range of emotions
Nina with a big fake black kefta: Join me, Alina Starkov! join me to the shadow side , HAHAHAHA!

Kuwei enter the scenario while dragging Wylan around
Tolya: is he supposed to be me or you?
Tamar: he has an undercut, so probably me-
Kuwei: Sankta Alina, we can cure you! I can cure you with my axe!
Kuwei turning around, showing a sidetail on the other side of his face: this makes me want to do some poetry
Tamar: oh, he is both of us, like the detail that the arm playing me is more muscular
Tolya: its literally not-
Jesper: no...i´ll die, my job here is done
Kuwei as Tolya : but my saint! you can't leave us!
Kuwei turning around as Tamar: Ravka is still a mess
Jesper: And thats your problem now, so long suckers! (fakes to die over Wylan´s body as Kuwei cries)
---
Inej with a fake blue kefta: i hope all of you know how lucky you are to be on my pressence
Zoya: this whole play is awful, all our portrayals are so one note and exagerated, we are not like that on real life. My eyes are too good for this sight
Inej : A triple funeral, a country with no money (flips her hair) my eyes are too good for this sight
Zoya: everyone shut up
Matthias with a cardboard crown: Oh yes, and i am the king now, i was hidden to treat my injuries completely unrelated to demonic possesion and (looks up at cue cards) improbable...i am a pearl...something , something...charming
Nikolai: who let him play me?
Kaz with a cheap red wig and a patch before the big curtain falls : and i...was ruination
Zoya: always the need to have the last word
Genya clapping: as "she" should

"I asked around," Nina said quietly, just for Kaz to hear as they stood behind a crumbling chimney atop a bank in the Financial District. It wasn't far from where Y/N was taken, and with this view, Nina couldn't blame Jesper and Inej for losing sight of the mercenaries. In the tangle of Ketterdam streets, it was too easy for them to get away. "Only three mercenary groups based in Kerch use ether."
"Which groups?" Kaz said, peering around the chimney and glancing at his pocket watch. Pekka Rollins's closest financier should be coming up for his hourly smoke anytime now, and Kaz was growing impatient. Not that he had much patience in the past three days, most of it shot by worry and an inability to stop wondering if you were still alive. He knew Pekka Rollins; he wouldn't choose a mercenary group that wasted time.
"-And the-Are you even listening to me?" Nina said, cutting herself off and looking at him with a raised brow. Her unimpressed look softened when she saw his pursed lips: his only tell that he was somewhere else, probably thinking about Y/N. "Kaz. We're going to find her."
Kaz turned and masked his concern with a scowl. "Of course we will. That's why we're here," he said sharply. She's in this mess because of me. The thought had plagued him since Inej and Jesper told him you were gone; finding you was the only way he could fix this. He wouldn't accept any alternative. "Which group uses ether the most?"
"They call themselves the Dykhaniye." Nina closed her eyes and felt for nearby heartbeats; none, except for Kaz's. "Wylan said ether is highly flammable. As far as anyone has heard, they're the only ones able to use it successfully without any significant losses on their end. Others have tried, but..." She shook her head to clear her thoughts. She didn't want to think about what ether was doing to Y/N. Difficulty breathing, fatigue, vomiting... Nina knew Y/N was strong but didn't know how long she could survive being repeatedly poisoned.
"We need to find where they're based. That's where they'll have taken her." Kaz clutched onto his cane and fought to keep his breathing steady. Nina's wording was deliberate. No significant losses on their end. If they found Y/N, what state would she be in? Would they kill her, or would exposure to the ether do it? "I'll send word to Inej."
"She's already investigating leads." Nina held up a hand, silencing Kaz as he opened his mouth to question how, exactly, Inej could already be investigating leads if Kaz had just heard this information. Nina tilted her head toward the door and mouthed, Later.
Fine. Kaz would question why he didn't hear about this first once he was done beating the shit out of the financier. Get the information, ask Inej what she knows, and find Y/N. He snapped his mouth shut and angled his head, listening as the door to the roof creaked open. The metal hinges squeaked terribly, grating Kaz's ears and making Nina cringe.
The door creaked shut, and Kaz heard footsteps approaching the edge of the roof. Nina raised her hands, already feeling for the man's breathing. It came to her as naturally as wind to sails, and she started to curl her fingers.
Kaz held up a finger. Wait. He glanced around the side of the chimney and watched the man next to the decorative metal fencing along the roof's edge. It was rusted, and pieces flaked off as the man lit his first cigarette, inhaled deeply, then tapped the ashes off using the fence.
He puffed away, looking over the city, and Kaz lowered his finger.
As the man inhaled, Nina clenched her fist.
The financier choked on the smoke and dropped the cigarette from his mouth. His hands went to his throat, and he stumbled back from the metal fence. He hacked and coughed, tipping forward until he sank to his knees. As his lips turned blue, he swung his head wildly from side to side to look around for anyone who could help.
Instead, he found Kaz, who had no intentions of helping the man get back to his smoke break. Vengeance burned in those icy blue eyes, and the man gaped in fear like a fish pulled from the sea.
Kaz brought his cane down on the man's skull. The man's mouth moved like he wanted to cry out, and he slumped to the side onto the rough surface of the roof. Blood seeped down the man's temple, and a sick satisfaction ran through Kaz, fueling his wrath and setting him ablaze from the inside out. He hauled the financier back to his knees with a gloved hand on the man's collar, then started dragging him toward the teetering metal fence.
The man writhed underneath his grip, his hands going to Kaz's wrist and pulling, trying to pry his fingers away. But Kaz's grip was as unbreakable as his determination to bring Ketterdam to its knees until he found Y/N, and he had no problem destroying this man and this city if it meant making sure you were safe.
Kaz positioned the man so he hung partially over the fence, his face turned to the streets below. Nina released her grip on the man's lungs enough for him to breathe some air but not enough to scream or make much noise. The man went slack once he could gasp, but Kaz wasn't foolish enough to release him.
"I'm only going to ask this nicely once," Kaz hissed, leaning in so his voice was a terrible, dangerous whisper in the financier's ear. His eyes glinted in the setting sun, the icy blue color turning a sinister shade of orange as his irises caught the sun's fading rays. "Pekka Rollins paid off mercenaries recently. How much did it cost?"
Nina stayed behind the chimney, giving Kaz the space to work, but she peeked at the man as he gasped for air. His heart raced against his ribcage fast enough to make her want to wince, and his lungs strained with the effort to keep up with his panic. Saints, Kaz was trying to send this man into heart failure before getting any answers.
"I can't-" the man wheezed through blue lips, "tell you." His face throbbed as gravity forced his blood to his head, and his breathing trembled.
Kaz pushed the financier further over the barrier, which creaked dangerously under the man's weight. "You can, and you will," Kaz said. He jerked his chin toward the street below, filled with passersby on their way home for the evening or to the East Stave for some debauchery to relieve the workday's stress. "Or I just might lose my grip."
"He'll kill me," the man whimpered. He coughed, and his mouth tasted like copper. "He said he'd kill me."
"I think you're worried about the wrong person." Kaz kicked the metal fence, and the segment beneath the man buckled. The financier cried out as he hung over the alleyway, supported only by Kaz's grip on his collar. He finally seemed to realize that Kaz intended to let him hurtle off the roof headfirst if he didn't get answers, and he sobbed a quiet plea for help. Nobody looked up, the sound muffled by a twitch of Nina's fingers.
"How. Much," Kaz pressed. His arm was beginning to strain from holding the man up, and his leg was none too pleased with the exertion required to keep his weight steady on the roof's edge.
"Two million kruge," the man sobbed. "Mercenaries wouldn't accept anything less."
Kaz tilted his head. "Is he telling the truth?" he said too calmly, the question intended for Nina. He could feel her eyes on him, on his complete indifference to the man's desperation to survive. But this paled in comparison to what Kaz wanted to do in revenge for your kidnapping.
Nina winced, though Kaz's tone was outwardly neutral. She peered at his face. His expression bordered on bloodthirsty, and Nina swallowed. "Yes," she said softly.
Sometimes it was easy to forget how Kaz got his reputation, especially when Nina saw him around Y/N. He was always kind with her, as tender or gentle as a man with such sharp edges could be, and he never responded to her with anything other than a racing heart or caught breaths.
Kaz loved Y/N, whether he admitted it to himself or not, and Nina's ability to hear the signs made her forget that he could be like this. And he would if it meant keeping his Crows secure, his business intact, Y/N alive and safe.
Kaz surveyed the man's face, the tears in his eyes, and his moving lips as he murmured prayers to his saints. He considered Nina's confirmation of the financier's truthfulness, yet how easy it could be to throw this man off the roof and be done with it. It would be merciful compared to what Kaz wished he could do to this man for his role in your kidnapping, enabling Pekka Rollins to hire the mercenaries.
Chances are, the financier didn't even know your name. It wasn't in his purview.
Kaz clenched his jaw. This man's death could send a message and make it clear that Kaz would only do worse until he got the information he wanted. He could cause terror, drive the Dime Lions out of hiding and force someone to yield information. It was what Pekka Rollins would do if Kaz had inflicted the magnitude of pain that Rollins had.
His brother. His childhood. His Crows. His love.
He jerked the financier upright once more, and the man let out a sob that Kaz cut off as he shoved the man away from the roof's edge. The man rolled a few feet away and stopped at the bottom of the chimney, crying and mumbling prayers into his palms.
Kaz crossed over to him in two long strides and brought the blunt end of his cane down on the man's ribcage hard enough to fracture bone. Nina winced when she heard the crunch, pressing herself into the side of the chimney; the cold seeped from the bricks into her back, and she squeezed her eyes shut.
"Which group of mercenaries did Rollins need the money for?" Kaz growled. He moved the tip of his cane to an unbroken rib and leaned just enough weight on it that the man choked on another cry.
"The Dykhaniye," the man wailed. He'd given up on trying to conceal information from Kaz Brekker, who knew exactly what buttons to push to get what he wanted. "I don't know what he wanted with them." He turned his head to the side and spat to clear his airway, creating a mess of blood and tears down the side of his face and on the ground.
Kaz lifted his cane, and the man immediately tried to wriggle away from him as if he could get far enough to be out of reach of the crow-headed cane. "That wasn't so difficult, was it?" Kaz said. He tossed a wad of kruge at the man's battered chest, and the bills scattered across the rooftop on a light breeze. "For your trouble."
It was mocking, but he could have done much worse. If the financier had any sense left, he would take the money and get the hell out of the city before Pekka Rollins caught wind of his men breaking under threat from Kaz Brekker.
He turned and caught Nina's gaze. Giving her a curt nod of thanks, he spun on his heel and went for the door leading off the roof. She rushed to follow, sparing a short glance at the sobbing man next to the chimney. "You were right," he said quietly. It was the closest he would get to approving of her telling Inej of her suspicions before him. "Now, we wait to hear what Inej knows."
-
Your head snapped sharply to the side as Pekka Rollins cracked his knuckles across your cheek. Pain blossomed across your jaw, throbbing hard enough to rattle your teeth, and you bit your tongue to silence your cry. Every breath you took stung your lungs, and your chest struggled to rise and fall against the pressure of your broken ribs.
You fought to stay upright, forced to shift your knees against the hard ground without using your hands to balance. Your right knee scraped harshly against the stone floor, and the pain was worse than anything Rollins had done to you. It shot up and down your leg like a strong electric shock straight to your nerves, and it took everything you had to not let a sob of agony cross your lips.
Breathe. Let the pain out through your lungs. You forced a trembling breath in and out, trying to imagine the pain in your body turning to mist. You thought of the low clouds that lingered in Ketterdam during the summer, how they occasionally brought cool breezes along to soothe the sweating inhabitants of the city.
It had been days since you'd seen the sky, and thinking of Ketterdam's consistently gray skies brought you a unique mix of pain and comfort. What you would give to be under the clouds with the breeze on your skin.
If you got out of here alive, you would never again take the sight of the sky for granted.
When. When I get out of here.
"I'll ask you again," Rollins said, pacing before you like a predator cornering its prey. His hair drooped in his face, and the front of his clothes was stained dark with broth. There was a slice across his cheekbone from a shard of porcelain, and blood was smudged across his knuckles and fingertips. Yours and his. He looked nothing more than the scum he was, with any semblance of composure or pride wiped from his face as you refused to break under his fists. "Why did Brekker want those documents?"
You spat at his feet. Blood splattered the hem of his trousers and his polished shoes, but the wicked satisfaction wasn't worth a slap jerking your head to the other side. This time, a soft groan of pain slipped out. Your cheek throbbed, and you swiped your tongue across your dry lips as you panted. In. Out. Keep breathing.
You could do this. You could keep fighting long enough to make a plan. The mercenaries had long since left the two of you alone; all you had to do was get past Pekka, swipe the knife from his belt, and saw away at the rope binding your wrists. If they hadn't dragged you up a flight of chipped stone stairs and away from your cell, you would consider using a shard from the bowl you'd shattered; if you made it back down, you would be sure to pocket one. Use what you have.
Pekka leaned down and grabbed your chin, forcing you to look up at him. "You're making this harder than it needs to be, lass," he snarled. "Perhaps I should have passed you over to the Stadwatch. You've killed a fair share of my men, and murder can be a serious charge if I want it to be."
"Then do it," you spat. Blood dripped down your lip, and you considered spitting it in his face. You didn't bother licking it away, unwilling to let him see how much the metallic taste in your mouth bothered you. "Why waste your time?"
"Because you're valuable to Brekker, stupid girl." Rollins laughed, a grating, taunting sound that sent a shiver down your spine. You flexed your fingers, wishing you could wrap them around his throat and strangle the sound out of his lungs. All of this is because Kaz poses a threat to his business.
But there had to be more. There had to be something Kaz hadn't told you.
No. Save the doubt for later.
Pekka kicked you in the ribs, knocking you back into the wall. Fiery pain rushed to your chest, and whatever air you'd gathered slipped past your lips in a soft wheeze. Your back ached from its collision with the stone wall. Everything hurt, and you weren't sure you could stand.
A bloody cough slipped past your lips, and tears welled up in your swollen eyes. You wished you could wipe them away, avoid showing Pekka Rollins how weak you were feeling. But you were powerless to stop them, and you had no choice but to lean your head back against the stones and squeeze your eyes shut. Stop crying. Breathe.
Breathing could only get you so far.
Pekka turned and slammed his fist against the heavy oak door keeping you inside this room with him. Inside this damn warehouse, from what you'd gathered on your straggling, painful walk up from your cell. You wished you had the strength to attack Pekka while his back was turned, but you could only bring yourself to open your eyes as the door opened and two of the mercenaries entered.
Sergei and Fjerdan Asshole. Just the people you wanted to see.
You glowered at them as they jerked you to your feet, and Sergei only gave you an unpleasant smirk. Another cough bubbled up in your chest as the mercenaries hauled you toward the door, filling your mouth with blood. You glared at Pekka Rollins as you passed him, and he looked back at you smugly.
"I can't wait until Brekker sees what I've done to you," he drawled, following you to the office door. "His rage will make it even more satisfying when I kill him."
When I kill him.
Something hot and red and destructive washed over you. Every ounce of pain in your body seemed to temporarily numb, yielding to the pure wrath burning beneath your skin. You would bear as much pain as Pekka Rollins gave you, the bruises and cuts and broken bones. But you would make sure there was nothing left of him, the Dime Lions, or Ketterdam if he went after Kaz; losing Kaz was a pain you refused to bear.
You looked over your shoulder at Rollins, piercing him with a simmering glare that would have made anyone else shrink back. "You have a spot of blood on your tie," you snarled. Then, you spat your mouthful of blood in his face.
Rollins reeled back with a roar of outrage, wiping away the blood but only succeeding in smearing it through his beard. A murderous look filled his eyes, but he didn't have enough time to act on it before the mercenaries shoved you out of the office and toward the dark stairs leading to the warehouse basement.
-
Inej darted up the stairs to Kaz's office, panting and shoving past meandering Dregs coming out of their room for an early breakfast. She swung around the corner and pushed open Kaz's door, nearly hitting Jesper. He jumped out of the way and surveyed her disheveled state, opening his mouth to, presumably, ask what happened.
She dropped a stack of papers on Kaz's desk and leaned against the chair across from his to catch her breath. "Straight from the office of Pekka Rollins," she gasped, holding her side. "The Dykhaniye are based in Zierfoort. They own every warehouse complex in the city as a front for their operations. That's where they took her."
Kaz immediately shoved his map to the side and started flipping through the papers, glancing up at Inej. "How? I told you not to risk it." He jerked a transaction list free from the stack, and his icy eyes scanned it for any precise information. Which warehouse, which side of the city, anything that might expedite their search for Y/N. "Jesper, the carriage. Now."
"On it, Boss." Jesper gently squeezed Inej's shoulder on his way out. She squeezed his wrist in thanks. "Good job," he whispered. He left the office, and his thundering footsteps rattled the floorboards as he moved down the stairs.
"Wylan staged a distraction. The grunts around the perimeter of the Emerald Palace had to go investigate an explosion on one of their ships in Fourth Harbor." Inej straightened up and searched Kaz's face. "I shouldn't have gone without letting you know, but she's my friend, Kaz. I can't sit idly knowing I could have done something to stop this."
"There was nothing you could have done," Kaz said quietly. He stood and rolled the papers up, stuffing them in the inner pocket of his coat. He met Inej's gaze, and she was relieved to find no anger there. None directed at her, anyway. "Pekka had this plotted out for months. They found servant stairwells that we thought were blocked off, and he hired the best mercenaries that kruge could buy."
Kaz didn't blame Inej or Jesper. He blamed himself entirely. I was the one who put her at risk. I let her become my weakness, and she's paying the price. He grabbed his cane and a pistol from some hidden spot beneath his desk and spun the latter in his fingers.
Inej examined Kaz's face, searching for any hint of a contradiction to his words. When she found none, her shoulders loosened. "I'll get Nina and Matthias. Wylan is already downstairs."
"Matthias and Wylan stay. They'll watch over the Club and the Slat until we return." Kaz grabbed his hat, stared at it for a moment, then put it back down. You were the last to wear it when you used it as a disguise to get him breakfast on his birthday. It reminded him too strongly of you, of his failure to say what he longed to say before the bank job.
You expressed your love for him so often and so carefully that he wondered why you woke up every day and still chose him, when he could barely tell you that he cared without choking on his past. Would you still choose him when all of this was said and done? Would you realize that he was at fault for this, that he was nothing more than a shell of a man, too haunted, too broken, too bruised, who brought pain to anyone who dared to get close?
Kaz blinked back to the present, pulling himself from the color of your eyes, the memories of his fingers clasping your favorite necklace around your neck. "Let's go," he said quietly, ignoring Inej's concerned look. She'd probably said his name a few times. He didn't care. "It's a day's trip to Zierfoort."
And he stalked out of the office, leaning heavily on his cane and pondering how it would feel to finally kill Pekka Rollins.

Hi! I’m here to send in a request for platonic crows x reader where the reader can shapeshift - The main thing I was thinking of was just kinda friendship w the crows in general and their reactions to different things they learn about reader overtime and what they first though about reader vs now. Also here’s some ideas I’ve had about reader for if you do choose to do this request that might help!
-> I feel like reader would probably be able to change their body to be able to take on like a half form of things so like they could give them-self ears or something and depending on if they have a ‘Main form’ of sorts they could probably have some of the features of that thing like idk enhanced hearing or their good at being quiet/Sneaky.
-> Also I imagine that they might get like aches if they haven’t done it in a long while just based on the fact that in a way it’s like changing your bones/Bone structure if that makes sense so if they do it too much (Like an unhealthy amount like every single day for hours on end) Or haven’t done it in a long time they’d get aches n stuff
-> and also (Last thing I promise) They would probably use smaller/Quieter forms to scare/sneak up on people and just be an overall menace rlly
And of course if you aren’t interested in doing this request that’s fine too! Just let me know ^^ hope you have a wonderful day! :]
(Also could I be an anon? If so could I be 🍒Anon?)
Platonic! Crows x gn! Shapeshifter! Reader Headcanons
Hi! You can totally be the cherry anon if you want, that's cool with me! I'm sorry it took me a bit to see this, I've been writing requests from the bottom of my inbox to the top of it lately so that I could get the oldest requests done first, and seeing this in my inbox, I just knew I'd have a blast! I was right, writing this was so much fun.
I did it as headcanons to keep the fic from breaching a 15k word limit which I knew I'd get to if I let myself and I didn't want this fic to run too long! I hope that that's all right with you and if not, I apologize and I can rewrite if you'd like me to!
Fic type- fluff
Warnings-mentions of tarantulas, flies (the reader once turns themself into a fly on the wall) and spiders
(no gif because I sadly couldn't find one of the crows on the rooftop)
Okay, so!
Your status as a shapeshifter is kind of just...known amongst the crows?
Like, they all know about it and it just kind of exists as another one of your attributes. It’s not a big deal, and nobody has ever really made it out to be.
You’re able to enhance your hearing so that you can hear pretty far out, which comes in handy a lot on heist jobs, especially if you can make it so that you can be standing on the total opposite side of wherever you need to be for the heist and still be able to hear Kaz and Nina bickering at the checkpoint.
You’re also able to make yourself quieter, which comes in handy a lot on jobs too, especially when you need to focus on being stealthy and go unseen and unheard.
Now that I think of it, there’s probably a way that you can shift to match your surroundings or like, make them match you kind of, and make yourself invisible, which is actually a super cool concept and I don’t want to get sidetracked by it, so next thing!
There’s a healthy amount of times that you should shapeshift on a regular basis. You go off that and start doing it too much or not doing it enough, you get really bad aches and pains.
I feel like you’d get them all over and they would hurt as much as a really bad migraine. It happens at random and can sometimes last a couple of days, too. All in all, the pain part of it isn’t really a fun or enjoyable experience so you try to shapeshift consistently
YOU WOULD TOTALLY SHAPESHIFT INTO RANDOM SHIT TO SCARE THE SHIT OUT OF PEOPLE-
forgive the caps, I would a thousand percent do the same thing and I got excited when I remembered that that was a possibility.
You’d probably shapeshift into something like a tarantula and just spend hours relaxing in a random corner of Wylans lab weaving webs and hanging from the ceiling and being all cool, and then Jesper comes in and you go to greet him and he’s like “saints, what is that?"
and then Wylan is just like “it’s Y/N? Their favorite color is the dots on their back? How could you not recognize them?”
“Oh, I’m sorry Wylan, I’m just not so used to seeing my best friend as a bloody tarantula!”
You probably shapeshift into a cat to be a menace to Kaz
the concept of you just kind of showing up at his office window and then doing that thing that cats do where they nap in direct line of wherever the sun is coming in is something I love more than life itself
that’s nOT MENACING, BACK ON TRACK
AFTER you’ve sunbathed an appropriate amount of time, you, in the form of a cat, jump onto Kaz’s desk and glare at him the entirety of the time that it takes you to bring his to-go cup of coffee closer and closer to the edge of his desk, until it tips over and spills.
that concept has made me laugh for the last ten minutes
Kaz almost hates you for that every time you do it, even though he knows you’re only doing it because he did something to piss you off first and he just considers it fair when he remembers that much.
You also buy him a replacement coffee out of the kindness of your heart, though you never actually apologize to him
to be menacing in the direction of Matthias and Nina, you also take up the form of a spider. Neither of them really like spiders and you just kind of mess with them for two minutes before it gets old and you switch into something else.
Inej is a cat person through and through, and there aren’t many ways in which you can mess with her, nor do you want to because knife wife WILL use knives if she doesn't recognize the fact that whatever you shift into is you and the possibility, though slight, is still there.
You go to Inej as a cat the most often, though.
You’re able to keep up with her when she’s running through the barrel on her missions for Kaz, and the naps in the sun are best when you’re laying on one of Inejs coats while she spars with Jesper
You’ve also been a literal fly on the wall to get intel for Kaz before, but that was because you’d offered, and it was exhausting. You got a lot of good intel from that but you were like “nah, never again. Not for less than a hundred million kruge. Never”
generally, it’s a very chaotic but a very fun existence, and you wouldn’t trade a minute of it for anything

oneshots
while you're gone (☆) → The reader is away on a trip to Ravka and Kaz misses her for ‘no apparent reason’, causing him to behave differently. The Crows notice and try to play cupid, just in their own way.
Maybe Matthias was right, he thought. What would someone like Y/N ever see in someone like him? The chances were higher that she already found a partner in the Ravkan court, than that she would ever reciprocate his feelings.
the secrets that you keep (☆) → Kaz and the reader are acting as a pretend couple to get into a vault at a party. After getting locked in said vault, things get awkward and confessions ensue.
His expression did not help ease your stress. His brows were furrowed, and his eyes constantly flew from the now-closed door to your panic-struck face.
you always turn my head around (☾ / ☆) → Being best friends with a lovey-dovey couple is hard. Especially if your relationship has to be kept a secret and your partner isn't really too fond of touch. Can love be stronger than guilt?
It wasn’t easy to be with Kaz sometimes. Loving him was easy. Hiding said love was not. You knew that he tried his best to show the missed lacking physical affection through other ways.
in a decadent age i try to change (♡ / ☆) → Kaz watches the reader’s close relationship with Jesper and starts to feel guilty, causing him to distance himself from them. After his bad conscience almost costs them their life, he chooses to come clean.
Unbeknownst to you, he did care. Quite a lot actually. It made him sick to his stomach, having to watch you getting touched by some dirty merchant, whilst he could barely muster the courage to link your pinkies.
untethered, i wash ashore (☾ / ☆) → Kaz is drowning again, but who is there to save him?
Water had killed Kaz Rietveld and birthed Kaz Brekker. And now it returned to take back what it created.
call me what you like (♡) → Kaz and the reader have been married for quite some years now, unbeknownst to their friends. But what if a slip up causes this shared secret to come to the surface?
This had worked surprisingly well. While you and Kaz spent way more time with each other, even trying to work on his touch aversion, your friends tried their best to get you together.
honeycakes and sweetened words (♡) → After a failed job, the reader decides to bake something to cheer the team up, not expecting anything in return. What if Kaz gives them the one thing they expected the least?
However, care wasn’t something of use in the Barrel. It slowed him down, so he did his best to push it down.
grateful you're mine (♡) → Kaz spends a completely ordinary evening with his partner, but wouldn't even dare to trade it for anything in the world.
When he reached the Slat he considered going inside - it’s where his room was, after all - but he quickly passed it. His home was somewhere - someone - else.
i eat boys like you for breakfast (♡) → After being captured by some of the Dime Lions, the reader is done taking anyone's shit.
As soon as Kaz had laid out his plan, you already predicted the many ways it could go wrong, but did he listen? Obviously not.
a glimpse of us (☾) → Years after the reader leaving him, Kaz still sees glimpses of her in everything he does.
But he didn’t. And you weren’t the girl that was with him now.
i crumble completely when you cry (☆) → After years of not seeing them, Kaz decides to find them again.
He had left you in his past a long time ago, and that is where you should have stayed. And that is where you would have stayed if he would have just thrown away all those damned letters.
a little crow and a lot of chaos (♡) → A little crow visits the Crow Club for the first time and chaos ensues.
Many people couldn’t appreciate the beauty of the Barrel, however, seeing it through the eyes of a small boy, whose father wasn’t reluctant to tell stories about all the crazy heists his parents and their friends had completed here, made it easier for you to understand why your son was so excited to come back.
liebe geht durch den magen (♡) → There seems to be someone mysteriously delivering food to Kaz's office when he least expects it, but who could be the culprit for this disgusting(ly sweet) act?
The two of you had some ‘unresolved romantic tension’, as Jesper would like to call it whenever he saw Kaz staring for a bit too long and caring just a little bit too much. But no, he didn’t have feelings for you.
i can't deny it any longer (♡) → An unlikely friendship gets revealed, and the Crows intend to make more of it.
“Don’t get me started.” You got him started. In fact, his rant almost took one hour, only allowing you to give some sparse comments in between.
five things you can see (☆) → Kaz comes to comfort the reader after a panic attack.
Kaz and you had an utterly different upbringing and quite the contrasting set of morals, however, that didn’t stifle the connection you began to establish. It had been a rocky path to get to the point where the two of you were now, but after being part of his life for the majority of his later teenage years and adulthood made one thing abundantly clear: You needed each other.
take my hand and don't let go (☾ / ☆ / ♡) → A job gone wrong forces the reader to do something she had tried to avoid: touching Kaz.
Your body hit the concrete ground with a firm thud, rendering you unable to move for a few moments after the impact. Everything around you was spinning, and you felt as if you had just lost the majority of your ability to hear, but staying on the ground wasn’t an option.
someone could lose a heart tonight (☾ / ☆ / ♡) → Kaz develops a crush on a Heartender!Reader, and thinks he's being good at hiding his feelings. Turns out, he really isn't.
This behaviour made you curious. His motions were uneasy - nervous. And Kaz Brekker was never nervous. And if he ever was, he wouldn't be inclined to display it this openly.
just deadweight (☾ / ☆) → Opposites attract, but they also make a damn good breeding ground for conflict and self-esteem issues.
So when it became obvious that the Bastard of the Barrel had developed feelings for someone that went against every single one of these traits, no one really seemed to be able to understand what exactly he saw in you. But oddly enough, the two of you worked. Somehow, everything between you made a stunning sort of sense.
hot chocolate (♡) → The reader convinces Kaz to drink a hot chocolate with them.
“The last time I had a cup of hot chocolate was when I was six. I burnt my tongue and promised myself to never drink one again. So I fear your threat won’t have much of an effect on me,” he replied dryly, pointedly ignoring the utterly shocked expression on your face.
right where you left me (♡) → Kaz sends the reader off to go travel with Inej, but didn't expect him missing them this much.
"You request I take Y/N with me when I leave for Ravka." He mentally shooed away the frown that threatened to crease his face. She was right, that was exactly what he wanted to ask her. But hearing her say the words out loud forced the vague idea to manifest into reality. And knowing that she could read him this easily deflated his ego quite a bit.
lose you all the same (☆ / ♡) → Three years after their break-up, the reader is forced to return to Ketterdam and old feelings resurface.
The Zemeni boy scrunched up his nose in dismay, a habit he had picked up from the merchling whenever he was apprehensive to do something. “They are back in Ketterdam.”
Tumblr media
two-parters
fingers crossed pt. 1┃pt. 2 (☾ / ☆) → Hiding an injury from someone as meticulous as Kaz is never a good idea. But what if a hidden injury came to light managed to lead to a long-awaited confession?
He thought about the previous moments. The absolute instinct to feel her temperature. To touch her without his gloves. His protective shield. Why did he do this? Was this the reason for the panic he was in?
never to touch and never to keep pt. 1┃pt. 2 (☾ / ☆ / ♡) → Kaz Brekker doesn’t say goodbye, he just lets go. However, his friends won’t accept that.
He should’ve apologized. He should’ve followed you. He should’ve dropped everything to keep you in his life. He should’ve done something. But he didn’t.
set it up pt. 1┃pt. 2 (♡) → Wylan and Jesper are helplessly pining over each other, and everyone is starting to get sick of it. Especially Kaz and the reader seem to have suffered enough under their friends' behaviour. So of course, the only reasonable conclusion is to set them up.
“Think about it. I’m Wylan’s best friend, you’re Jesper’s best friend - don’t you dare deny it! Together we can get all the intel - all the important information on how they feel about each other. It’s perfect! We could set them up and they wouldn’t even notice our involvement.”

Welcome to my first ever fic! I have another one in the works as well but currently neither of them have a title because title's are hard, so for simplicity's sake this one is Kanej themed and when I share the other one I'll refer to it as Helnik themed.
Concept: Around ten years after the events of Crooked Kingdom, 25-year-old Captain Inej Ghafa frees Maya Olsen from a pleasure house in Ketterdam. Maya is looking for revenge against the man who out her in her position, a man who she knows nothing about except his name: Kaz Brekker.
Tags: @wraith--2 @lunarthecorvus @just2bubbly @real-fragments7
I've only tagged people who specifically said they'd like to read more, not everyone who expressed general interest, but if you'd like to be added to the list let me know! <3
Content Warnings: in more general terms I want to remind people to be aware of the nature of Kaz and Inej's experiences and relationship since even if I'm not directly addressing these things they tend to be implicit in any writing about them, but specifically to this chapter there's descriptions of blood/wounds, and implied sa references (not graphic).
Chapter One - Kaz
"Now listen," Kaz leaned back and ran a gloved hand through his hair, vaguely aware of the traces of blood he was leaving on his forehead, "this has been fun and all, but I promised my wife I'd be home in time for supper,"
He consulted his pocket watch and frowned.
"And I'm already running late,"
It was clear that the man tied to Kaz's chair had no idea what to say. Or maybe he just couldn't. His cheek was a bloody crater; his jaw tight at a painful looking angle. Kaz paused for a moment to survey his half-closed eyes, wondering if he'd done the job too well. But the man was still breathing his pathetic, shaky breaths, and his eyelids were quivering slightly. Kaz hit the chair leg with his crow's head cane, and the man shook back to life.
"Are we done here?"
The man nodded shakily, quivering as he leaned as far from Kaz as his chains would allow.
"Good. Then I'll see you next week, with the money," Kaz pulled a key from thin air and placed it on the man's knee, "Have fun getting out,"
He walked away, listening to the man attempt to call him back through a mouthful of blood right up until the door slammed shut. Kaz stretched, smiled, rolled his shoulders. That had gone well. He was late though - she wouldn't be happy. Speaking of which, Annika was leaning against the wall opposite him, picking at her nails with a knife. She must have news.
"Go check on him if he's not out in an hour. Cleanly, for now, but keep an eye on him. If he tries to run this week, put a bullet in his skull,"
"Why me?"
"You're in my line of sight. And on that, what are you doing here? Aren't you meant to be at the Crow Club?"
"Just came off a shift. Brought you a message,"
Kaz nodded.
"She's back?"
"And pissed at you," Annika confirmed, "She's coming to find you,"
Kaz was meant to go to her. If she'd decided to come to him, it could only mean one thing: he was in deeper shit than running late.
"Fine," he said, and marched upstairs.
" - something else!" Annika called after him.
Kaz turned.
"Yennefer Baars is dead,"
"Then it's a happy day for everyone. Except for me, because unlike other people's spouses when my wife suggests murder, she actually means it. Go to the dock's and rustle us up some attention, the Silver Six is quiet,"
And with that, ignoring Annika's brief mumble of protest, Kaz began to head up the stairs. Yennefer Baars was dead. So that's what Inej had been up to. She'd been gone for the last month, and as a rule they didn't tell each other what a job was until it was over - no sense in worrying each other over nothing. But that didn't mean they didn't guess at what the other was up to, and usually figure it out. Kaz knew that Inej wrote a goodbye note before every job she did and left it with a particular member of the Merchant Council and his risk-loving fiancé, to be passed on in case something went wrong. He only knew that because he did the same thing, and Jesper was a terrible liar. Inej was better at figuring out what he was up to than he was her, that was true, but usually he had some idea. This time he'd heard nothing, until today. Yennefer Baars, owner and proprietor of the Tulip Mill, the most successful pleasure house in Ketterdam since the Menagerie close, was dead. Kaz had to smile.
Even if he was next on Inej's list. What the hell had he done this time?
It was raining, but what else was new? Kaz opened the window and listened to the droplets flowing over the pane and hitting the sill like a waterfall. He couldn't hear Inej, but he wouldn't be able to. Definitely not over the wind and rain. He left the window open for her, and headed to the basin. He shed his gloves and began to wash the blood off before it dried. Running hot water. Years ago he'd added this, with the bathroom of their suite at the Geldrenner on this mind. It was such a luxury, back then. So normal now.
"Inej,"
He smiled to himself as he imagined the brief look of annoyance on her face at him greeting her just as she opened her mouth to do the same.
"Kaz,"
He turned to see her, and immediately Annika's message was unimportant. It was good to see her. She smiled.
"How are things, Kaz? I heard the Silver Six has been quiet,"
Of course she had.
"A little slower than usual, but the Crow Club's booming. I've got time to fix it before the profit's take a hit,"
Inej nodded. A moment passed in silence, before she said:
"Maya Olsen,"
"What of her?"
"You know her then?"
Kaz shrugged.
"One of Yen's girls, isn't she? The Tidemaker. Never met her, but she passes information to the Dregs. I have a few people watching her, making sure the information's good and trying to find out where she gets it. Why?"
"I met her tonight,"
"You mean when you killed Yennefer Baars?"
They looked at each other, dark eyes stone. And then both their hard expressions collapsed, and they smiled.
"It's good to be home, Kaz,"
He liked it when she said 'home'. Really, he knew, 'home' was Ravka. But the Suli travelled the country, never static, never anywhere long enough for that one solitary place to be the only singular point they'd always want to return to. That was too limiting for Inej; she existed to explore. To her, 'home' really meant 'family'. It had taken the last ten years to get here, but he'd come to like that word.
"But we do need to talk,"
Kaz sighed.
"Of course we do,"
Kaz cooked. Nothing special, just warm bread and soup, but Inej seemed to like it. They sat opposite each other at their little wooden table, eating and waiting for the other one to talk first. Kaz was stubborn, but Inej was infuriatingly patient when it came down to this sort of thing. Eventually, he broke the silence.
"Maya Olsen, then?"
"She's at the shelter - "
"I didn't ask where she was, I want to know - "
"Let me finish, Kaz,"
"You know I've killed people for less than interrupting me," he smirked
"And I've killed people for far more. Now be quiet, and listen to your wife,"
Kaz frowned and mumbled something about only agreeing to marriage for the tax break, but stopped interrupting her all the same.
"Maya's sixteen, I met her tonight at the Tulip Mill and took her to the shelter along with a couple of others, but they were the only ones I managed to get out," she paused and glanced away, just for a second, before picking up the thread of her story, "the other girls were both passed out - long story, I'll tell you later - I'm going to check on them in a couple of hours. But Maya was awake, so we talked and... Kaz there's no easy way to say this, but she wants to kill you,"
Kaz almost laughed. So this was why Inej had come to him, instead of waiting for him near the shelter. The had a second place there, unbeknownst to the gangs or anyone else, except the liberated kids - in case they needed Inej.
"Invite her to join the queue,"
"This is different, Kaz. This isn't some random act of aggression or some boy from a rival gang who wants to prove himself. She hasn't just picked you because you're Dirtyhands, she's picked you because you're... you,"
Kaz collected their empty bowls and began to head towards the sink, before Inej tutted and took them out of his hands, swapping them for his cane. He leant against it, and pretended the relief wasn't palpable. Somehow it was still a bad thing to rely on her.
"How does this kid even know about me? The information she was sharing wasn't specific to the gang, she didn't know who she was talking to. Just that he paid her to talk, and to not talk to anyone else. Did Yen find out about the extra income?"
"I don't think so, but Maya didn't say much about it,"
"So what information, in your extreme wisdom regarding matters of life and death, did you manage to gain?"
Inej looked at him and raised an eyebrow.
"Information isn't my specialty anymore, Kaz,"
"Yes it is,"
She laughed, and Kaz closed his eyes to listen to the sound, but it was only short.
"She blames you for her indenture,"
Shit. No wonder Inej was mad at him.
"What do I have to do with that?"
"Apparently there was no choice but to sell her indenture to a mercher, when her father was in debt. The mercher died and her contract changed hands, several times, before it ended up with Yen,"
The tap hummed as Inej washed the plates. Kaz shifted his weight against his cane.
"She blames the man her father was in debt to," she glanced at him over her shoulder, "No prizes for guessing who,"
This wasn't sounding too good.
"And just for that she wants to kill me? So do a thousand other unlucky sods, Inej, I'm not concerned,"
"You also killed her father,"
Damn it.
"So, she wants to kill me. That doesn't mean she gets to. Doesn't really mean she even tries. I've killed a lot of people's family members, but I'm still standing here. Did you...?"
"Tell her we're married? Yes, Kaz, I'm that much of an idiot,"
"Alright, alright. Still, you might as well. Talk her down, take her back home and find some relative or whatever to take her. That's what you do, right?"
Inej rolled her eyes. She was now perching on top of the half wall between the little kitchen and dining spaces.
"She can't go back. She's a Fjerdan grisha, she wouldn't be safe. And as for relatives - anyone she's got would either kick her out or not dare the risk of taking her. But that's not the problem, Kaz,"
"Right, and remind me why we're more worried about this murderous little problem than any of the others?"
"Because she's different to the others, Kaz. She... well, she reminded me of you,"
"Oh," said Kaz, freezing for a second before slowly returning his watch to his pocket, even though he hadn't checked the time yet, "Then I guess we have a problem,"
Problem was an understatement, and both of them knew it. There was every chance that he was completely and utterly fucked.

proving kaz is a tidemaker, even tho it's not canon and shouldn't be, but I'm gonna argue for it anyway
I already made this post ages ago and now this has been in my drafts for even longer, I just unearthed it... but I'm making it again, more in depth, bc I didn't hit on everything I wanted to last time. obviously this isn't canon bc the point of kaz is he's Just Some Guy and how that really really pisses off more powerful people, and I think that's definitely best, Kaz NEEDS to be otkazat'sya for his function in the story... but if you ever wanted to prove it in a fic, shit is EASY. (I am vaguely considering how it might work out in a fic. we'll see. I've done stuff that couldn't/I wouldn't want to be canon before with my jordie-lives fic, so...) I'll mostly talk in the context that he'd be a tidemaker bc I feel like that's the conclusion a lot of this comes to, but some of the points are more generalised.
obviously the basic argument everyone makes for this is that the reason kaz was able to get back to shore from reaper's barge is bc, subconsciously or not, as a tidemaker he could control the currents to help him, since that's one of the most basic tidemaker powers. in the harbour scene, he notices that the tide has moved to work against him, but it doesn't seem to prove much of a problem; he attributes it to his new will to survive, but... Well. Kaz is exceptionally good at withholding information, even in his own POV.
grisha not using their powers become ill or weaker; kaz isn't really physically ill but he has an element of the underfed and sallow about him that's generally attributed to living in the barrel.
kaz is also ESPECIALLY horrified by the state of mikka, the tidemaker under the influence of jurda parem at the start of SOC; this is attributed to his past trauma and his dislike for things he can't rationally explain, which, yeah, but he is thrown in a way we don't really see again for the rest of the series. he instantly thinks of jordie, and it's maybe the one time he succumbs to superstition in the whole series.
the obvious explanation for how kaz knew that coffee extract and paraffin hid the scent/evidence of grisha is that he's very clearly involved in smuggling (jesper mentions how coffee grounds were used when packing smuggled jurda shipments) but the second explanation,,, is that he uses them himself. he comes up with the solution with IMMENSE speed and he just like, has the coffee extract around. ok, sure, not that hard to get hold of, but still. and coffee gets mentioned in relation to him at least a few times, most noticeably the 'bitter coffee eyes' thing inej uses, which is amusingly romanticised, but also... inej why do you associate coffee w kaz... something you've noticed abt him?
(but then, you wonder why he didn't suggest this to jesper previously; the answer I'm sure he would give you is he did, when it was a problem. before that it wasn't a problem and jesper was doing fine at staying hidden on his own)
the gloves can also add to this one, since they presumably at least cover his wrists and therefore his pulse somewhat, though obviously that's not their main function.
recovers with startling speed from nearly drowning at the ice court; matthias has to get his breathing going again but he's almost immediately fine after. I know yk, heist fantasy book, gotta keep going, but still
kaz is almost completely correct about the methods, powers of, and appearances of the council of tides (one single thing, the method of hiding their faces, is wrong.) impressive, no...? he is also shockingly apathetic in the face of their threats; they fill his lungs up with water and he just coughs it up and then is like "lol" immediately after. this is funny no matter what the fact of the matter (major general of the idgaf war) but the fact his link to them is left hanging is also a thread that could be easy to pick up. I think it would be hilarious if he was secretly in the council, but I won't stretch it that far bc they clearly don't like him lmao, that would have to be a proper AU.
in the dregs, kaz has a corporalki (nina) and a materialki (jesper) but no etheralki. wouldn't it be prudent to recruit one, if he could find one? or maybe he doesn't need one. if he already has one around, for an emergency of emergencies... for a rainy day... (ha ha)
the way kaz's trauma is often described as manifesting, is with the rising of the harbour waters; so it's pretty reasonable to suggest that in suppressing that, he'd also, inadvertently or not, suppress any kind of tidemaker/etheralki impulse or power. possibly he can't even tell the difference between the two, or they're so tangled up he can't really separate them anymore, which is why he doesn't so much as even think to attempt to use it. still, if this was the case I think improvement with one would not necessarily improve the other, or vice versa. kaz hypothetically using grisha power he'd had suppressed would not magically make his touch aversion go away, I think that'd be weird, and I'd not want his PTSD to be passed off as solely being the sickness from not using grisha power, that's reductive as hell. but I can see them certainly being two things very much intertwined.
we don't know a lot about grisha who are native to kerch, but assumedly he'd not have had much cause to use it in his childhood, on a farm somewhere inland, so most, if not all, of his experience with using it would likely be irretrievably tied to ketterdam and jordie so no wonder he just wouldn't use it. I don't think he'd even see it as feasible. perhaps it would be a very very final resort, but he'd never let it get to that point, he'd always want to try something else first. and anyway, he'd not be trained.
the sankt vladimir story is also thematically quite close to Kaz; holding back the harbour waters until he's finally too exhausted and lets it drown him. I like this regardless of this analysis actually it's a good comparison. patron saint of the drowned and unlikely achievement....
even if kaz wasn't an otkazat'sya, after all that happened, I think he'd try very hard to pretend he was. it couldn't save jordie, therefore in his extreme as hell thinking around that entire thing, I imagine he'd reason it wasn't useful, that he could get on better without it, and, like jesper, think it was a liability.
this would add a wild layer to him being the one to have the jurda parem on him for almost all of crooked kingdom; it would make it feel like his plan z was to take it himself. certainly he'd sooner do that than let jesper take it.
and finally: thematically, it slays. like half of the imagery around kaz (and kanej) centres around water (think the bathroom scene, how he only washes in front of her, etc) and that plays into both of their trauma, plus religious imagery, all this... it's a fantastic bit of extra theming. it just doesn't really work with how his character operates.
basically I think you could DEFINITELY make it work and it'd be a killer fic but again it's one of those things, like jordie living, that I don't really want to be canon because it undermines something about kaz's character that I consider pretty critical; in this case, that kaz is not really endowed with any special power or circumstance, he's just bloody-minded and clever, but that's enough for him to pull off almost impossible jobs anyway.

FOR THE LAST TIME
Kaz Brekker is not a psychopath. Not only is a word “psychopath” a debated concept, but also the mostly accepted idea of it is “someone who is incapable of feeling emotions (of any kind); an extreme lack of empathy” and usually judged on some sort of “psychopathy test.”
Kaz very obviously has emotions, it’s like almost his entire character. Also, although you cannot really measure someone on the psychopath test accurately unless you’re taking it yourself or actively interviewing them, using the Hare Psychopathy Test, Kaz Brekker gets “high borderline.”
Is that high? Yes. Does that mean he’s a psychopath? No. Most people get borderline.
Anyways, conclusion is: Kaz Brekker is not a psychopath, if that’s even a real concept, and stop saying this shit if you haven’t done your research. Thank you!

Tekken 8 storymode thoughts/rant/review
Obviously will contain spoilers
But I have to say that
Surprisingly, I really liked Tekken 8's story (which is something I really didn't expect. I was preparing to gaslight myself that I liked the story because I was expecting a mid plot. But I can definitely say that I genuinely enjoyed this installment's storymode)
I'm going to remove my kazujun stan lens for this review
Jin has always been an after thought to me. The only time I care about him is if it's connected either to Kazuya or Jun (as a kazujun shipper). But the way he was written in Tekken 8 added layers to him and developed his character well. Don't get me wrong though, IT WOULD NEVER REALLY ERASE THE FUCKED UP SHIT THEY DID WITH TK5-7, but Tekken 8 was sweeping up some of the garbage left behind.
I always joke about Jin and his war crimes. Obviously, waging war is bad irl, but this is fiction okay. Anyway, Tekken 8 somehow managed to make me really feel like Jin didn't want to wage war. It was more of a result of his own self deprecation. Add to this, he was already suicidal before he took over the Zaibatsu, but after Tk6, he just really sulked into the idea of having to carry his sins and let it define him for the rest of his life.
The way they turned Jin from this guy who's hopeless and is submerged in his own hatred towards his bloodline and himself to this guy who finally acknowledges that all of the bad things are a part of who he is, but it doesn't have to be who he completely is, was really really really written decently. This whole character development with Jin instantly makes Tekken 8 on par, if not equal to, Tekken 4 story writing. And I was really impressed and blown away with how they unfolded the development. Because I really didn't want the romanticization of all his past mistakes, and his allies just cheering him on. Instead, his allies actually acknowledge JIN AS A DEVIL literally and figuratively (e.g Hwoa saying Jin has those dope-ass powers, Leroy asking Jin who is he, Xiaoyu saying she isn't scared of Jin despite the devil look), but they all believed in the chance they gave him to atone for everything he's done wrong.
I wish we could've gotten more about the history of the devil gene. It's still a very vague concept, and I was kinda expecting Tekken 8 to answer most of the questions about it, but still no.
Although as a Jun stan, I'm upset she never really appeared in the real world, I have to say that I really like how they still kept going with Jun's persona as a mysterious woman. If you see a previous post of mine, I have always been scared that Tekken 8 would finally be the franchise who would ruin Jun's character, but they played safe with it. She's still as mysterious as ever, but they allowed her to show more of her kindheartedness.
Like I said, I really wish we could've gotten more. I wish we could've also got to explore Kazuya's perspective. It's been like 6 consecutive games, and we still haven't had a storymode that focuses on Kazuya's character (always the one sided villain). Although, I understand why they couldn't do it (maybe because of budget constraints, and it would really diminish and compress the quality of Jin's char dev if they're gonna focus on both of them). I'm assuming at least that we get Tekken 9 and have it shine a spotlight on Kaz.
Overall, I really liked it. It gets an 8/10 for me!
More things I kinda didn't like:
- Where the hell is Yoshimitsu???? He appears in the tournament and then goes Bye Felicia once Kazuya absorbed Azazel LMAOOOOO. His bio about investigating the Mishima bloodline and whatever didn't really reflect on the storymode :<<
- Nina and Steve.... Uhhh.... We already had them in Tk 7, and I was at least expecting that they would continue it in Tk 8
- The Asuka Kazama erasure.... She's just treated as another one of the side characters at this point. I fear she's just only in the game now because of Lili. She's very underdeveloped and underutilized and I feel so sad about it :<<
Tekken has a very interesting set of characters with amazing dynamics and chemistry with everyone else. It has a huge amount of lore to explore as well. And they could really do better by exploring and developing most of the characters. Here's to hoping we get a story expansion DLC not just for the main story, but also for the other beloved characters in the game.

This is also kind of inspired by the asked I got, but also I'm rewatching the final kanej scene (again) lol
It's sort of weird to expect Kaz to continue to try if Inej doesn't try as well. And it's not as if either one are completely blameless. Like for all the faults that Kaz has, Inej is also very bad at telling Kaz what she wants.
This is also something I noticed but it's starting to feel like Kaz is the one who messed up in the final kanej scene. Like Inej is like be honest! And he is. He's like I want you to be at the EP! And she's not. The one time where his armor is completely gone and she's not there.
Kaz has also done the following: actually tells the Crows his plans, helps Nina see Matthias, acknowledges Jesper as his brother, recruits Wylan and making sure he eats a proper meal (and gets a boyfriend), made sure Matthias (a stranger) wasn't put in the fighting pit... and on top of all that helped a whole other country to prevent the world from going to shit.
I probably missed some things, and this is just a silly little show... and we are dealing with a much more mature Kaz than in the books. But what else is he supposed to do? He's not even 100% bad a feelings, he's not great at it (he was raised in the barrel). Also, the touch aversion is not his fault. I really wish that wasn't used against him.
But Inej... Inej's trauma that runs so deep that she had a whole dream about touched and then lied about it, whose trauma is so fresh that when Jesper asked last season, she just gave him this look of pure horror. Inej, who expects so much of Kaz and for him to be open, will shut down just as easily.
Inej is a brave and lovely character, but she is so deeply flawed. She is so deeply traumatized, and one thing I give the show credit for is Inej's struggles are very much internal (bc that's very much book canon btw). That's why her hallucinations were about touch (and Kaz). She's not ready for what comes with a relationship, and Kaz was. Kaz could of told her he loved her and she would of still left.
tl;dr inej is bad at feelings too

the hungering hearts
circle III: gluttony
But he feels warm, pleased. He leans against the back of the chair and watches her
He can hear her heart and it’s the rhythm that he can recognize; it’s the melody that sings to him whenever he lowers his mouth to her neck, to her wrist, to her thigh.

*
The businesses begin to suffer. Not much, nothing to be concerned about. But he’s more concerned about how unconcerned he is about it. He does the books absent-mindedly, cataloging the losses. Reads the Council meeting minutes and extracts interesting tidbits of information; stores them in his brain for safe-keeping and never uses them.
Pekka Rollins still doesn’t come back, and now he thinks he knows why. The scientist - the Ice Court, the streets talk. Oh, what a job. A dream for a thief. And he would've pulled it off, he thinks. He could’ve extracted Bo Yul-Bayur and given him to the highest bidder on a silver platter if Van Eck was smart enough to ask him, not Rollins. With the right crew: with his Wraith, with Jesper. With Nina and the insider knowledge of her brainless Fjerdan hunk. And with Wylan Van Eck as insurance - he still doesn’t quite believe his insistence that his father would not hesitate before double-conning the crew that holds his son. In and out, quiet like rats in the night. Yeah, he could’ve done it.
But alas, he didn’t. No need to focus on that.
What he is focused on is - ah, Inej. Inej, Inej. They walk into rooms together and people talk, in the corners, behind doors left ajar, and she squeezes his hand, small fingers closing on black leather, her dark eyes unbothered. Let them talk. And he knows why they talk. The walls of the Slat are dry, uneven and cardboard-thin. Every grunt and moan, every laugh and cry reverberates through the bones of the building. There are no secrets in the Slat, except for precious few.
And people have been saying that he’s sleeping with Inej ever since he brought her from the Menagerie. It bothered him then for some irritating, itching reason that he couldn’t put his finger on. It still bothers him now, except now it’s true.
Maybe it’s because he doesn’t want her name on their lips. Or at least, he doesn’t want it spoken with anything less than fear, less than respect. And she holds her head high, still, but whatever respect she has earned with her brass knuckles and her skills for the impossible gets muddled up by the way she moans for him, her face pressed into the bent of her elbow, when he fucks into her and the frame of her ramshackle bed bumps against the wall. He diminishes her worth. Spoils her.
At some point, Jesper stops barging into his office and pestering him for things, giving him moony-eyes. Ever since his Da came to the city and saw who his son became, he’s walking around the Barrel all mopey. Gambles more than ever. Loses more than ever. Takes Wylan to his bed, which was perfectly predictable of him to do, and then they fight for hours, even more predictably, and Kaz can spot him talking to Inej in hushed voice as she’s looking at him with some infinite patience and infinite pity written on her face.
Kaz doesn’t ask her what they’re talking about. And she doesn’t tell. He’s not that concerned about it anyway; Jesper can deal with his shit. He has had more ways out than most and still hasn’t learned his lesson. It’s not Kaz’s responsibility to coddle him any longer. Hopefully, he will have enough reason to leave with Colm.
Besides, there is war. There are market disturbances. There is Inej and the way she bites her lip and tilts her head to the side when she knows he’s looking. Her eyes gleam like twin lighthouses, and he can feel himself crashing against the rocks, sinking deep into the cold sea.

LJ Idea that because kaz fucked up his orbit so badly that Lupin cant wear his prosthetic eye or even the fake one for weeks that lupin spends even his discharge near completely blind
Lupin is basically working with a half working eye and a gap, so even after his discharge he cant see worth a shit
Even when everything’s all said and done Lupin still gets nervous even after leaving because every little sound makes him nervous but he can’t see so he’s very liable to spook
He needs some sort of physical contact with jigen at all times to ground himself, which most of the time is them holding hands, or just Jigen finding ways to wake him without scarring the living daylights out of him because lupin frequently wakes up and panics bc hes blind so he cant always be 100% sure hes in the same place he was last night
Jigen is the only one who knows how to wake him without scaring the absolute shit out of him
The others haven’t really caught on yet The only reason jigen has is because Jigen learned ways of dealing with Lupin with his limited eyesight since they were kids
It’s sorta like falling back into old almost forgotten routine, muscle memory. Jigen actually in the end does end up feeling bad for the others They are never able to wake him up without scaring him
Fujiko especially
especially since she's literally just learning things about Lupin she's never known before
like the fact he doesn't have "true" eyesight and has basically been coping with only half eyesight, which has just gotten a lil worser now
it also bothers her in particular because she's unused to seeing Lupin so vulnerable and afraid, or him waking up with fear painted in his face and no immediate recognition

I NEED some Yakuza headcanons of how the boys would deal with an s/o who's having their period. I'm really going through it rn and I need some comfort in these trying hours, please and thank you. T_T
OMG yes, I feel you tbh period care is very comforting. This post also crosses into how they'd care for you if you're generally feeling unwell, I hope that's alright. I'm sorry to hear you're going through it and I'll do my best to cheer you up! Headcanons of the boys below the cut.
Kazuma Kiryu
He's stoic looking on the outside but on the inside he is sweating nervously. He knows this is totally natural but he doesn't like seeing you in any kind of discomfort. Kiryu will check in on you a lot to ask how you're doing, using an unusually timid voice. He just wants to make sure you have everything you need.
Thank goodness for Haruka especially, on days when your period pains are particularly bad, Haruka just says "Leave it to me, Uncle Kaz!" and gives him a list of what to pick up at the store while she makes you some tea.
If Haruka isn't around to make a list and you have a request or need sanitary items, Kiryu will rush to the store only to realize he totally didn't ask what you specifically needed or how much. He'll just call to double check and he'll come back home with a gift, like your favorite snack. He'll give you personal space unless you request for him to be cuddly as he doesn't want to intrude.
His favorite way to comfort you is giving you massages. He'll massage any part of you too. He'll also run a bath for you and bring you tea.
Majima Goro
When he hears it's that time of month, his first thought is "Ah, shit." because he genuinely doesn't know what he can do to help. He'll ask and even if you insist you can handle it, he can tell you're feeling some discomfort. He'll try to cheer you up by volunteering to do chores you'd do, like shopping or cooking.
Both of you realize quickly that might not be the best idea. Majima isn't a horrible cook but he is so easily distracted that he's more likely to just burn stuff. He never makes lists when he shops so he'll come back with ten things no one asked for. He's just hoping to take some of the pressure off of you.
If you ask him for favors like to rub your back or to get you a hot water bottle, he's immediately on it. Extra pillows? Done. Snacks? Say less. He just needs some direction or he'll go overboard trying to find things to do.
In the end, Majima's way of comforting you is what he does best: cuddling! He's going to snuggle the pain away. It doesn't matter if you have 3 pillows and a hot water bottle on your stomach, he's going to snuggle up next to you. He'll probably try to get you to smile by cracking awful jokes.
Akiyama Shun
Actually pretty good at handling this. He works regularly with girls at the hostess club and the only other employee at Sky Finance is Hana, so he's around girls a lot. He knows when the time comes to just step back and make sure he isn't in your way.
Akiyama isn't overbearing due to the fact that he has experience with this. If you run out of sanitary products, he'll just ask Hana "Oi, Hana-chan. Where's the nearest place to pick up some tampons?" or he'll ask the hostesses rather than bugging you.
Totally the type of guy to take notes on your cravings and other things you like when it's that time of month. He'll remember if you prefer pads or tampons, he'll get your favorite robe washed and dried so it's clean and extra fluffy, and he'll get you all the chocolates you could ask for.
Akiyama's favorite way of comforting you is just catering to your needs. He's good at keeping calm and rather than constantly fluttering around you, he tries to surprise you with thoughtful gestures. He'll pick up takeout from your favorite place and share a cozy meal at home with you.
Saejima Taiga
His best trait? He is warm and soft like mashed potatoes. Forget a hot water bottle or a warm bath, he is a human heater so just snuggle up. He realizes this so when the time comes he'll just open his arms and say "C'mhere, get cozy."
Saejima isn't the world's greatest cook but he's particularly good at things like soup, so he'll make you a hearty soup with your favorite meats and veggies to cheer you up. Definitely the type of guy who believes you can beat a cold by just eating a lot of chicken noodle soup and nothing else.
Takes warm baths WITH you, washing your hair and massaging your back. Plus, you can just lean back against him like he's a giant chair, which he basically is.
His favorite way of comforting you is just finding ways to make you as warm and cozy as possible. He won't assume that your period makes you out of commission but he'll gauges your behavior to determine how much he needs to step up and how much he needs to do.
Tanimura Masayoshi
Since he's usually out most of the day for work, he'll text and call asking how you're doing more than usual. If he passes by your favorite restaurant or sees your favorite snack while at a convenience store, he'll message you asking if you'd like him to pick anything up.
If you end up staying home all day, he'll play hooky for a bit to swing by the apartment mid-shift to check on you. He'll joke, saying "If I get in trouble, I'll just say it was a family emergency, haha." before giving you a kiss and heading back out.
When he does have time off during your period, he will spend the whole day with you, doing whatever you want. You want to stay home in bed all day? Fine by him. You want to go get food? Name a place. Honestly, Tanimura isn't super picky on how he spends time with you most of the time so on your period it just means you get extra special attention.
Much like how he shows affection, his best way of comforting you during your period is just by giving you as much of his time and attention as he can. He knows you don't like when he slacks off at work too much but he'll still sneak off to grab you a snack or drink on the clock, giving a sly wink when you ask if he slacked off at work get you these.
Ryuji Goda
His work keeps him rather busy so he might not be able to dote on you as much as the other boys. Not to imply that he wouldn't love to just stay home all day and dote on you. He'll be sure to check on you in the morning and bring you a delicious breakfast in bed before he takes off for the day.
He keeps the bathroom stocked with items you may need. He's pretty good at monitoring his own needs and by extension yours as well, so whenever he's out shopping for stuff he needs, he'll pick up stuff for you as well so neither of you ever run out of stuff.
Type of guy to leave cute notes around the house, like "I laid out your new robe in the bathroom in case you wanted to take a bath" or "If you get hungry, order food from wherever you want and charge it on my card". His way of being there for you even if he physically can't be.
Ryuji's favorite way of comforting you is full on spa treatment at home. Breakfast in bed, warm bubble baths, a giant cup of your favorite tea, complete with a fluffy robe and matching slippers. It's honestly quite luxurious.
Nishikiyama Akira
He has a bit of a childish side in a good way. When it's your period, he wants nothing more than to make a pillow fort and put on your favorite TV show. It doesn't matter if he's never seen an episode, he just wants to snuggle up and have a comfy day.
Nishiki can't cook to save his life so he won't even try because he knows he'll just make some weird slop and that would drive you both insane. He can actually bake decent cookies though so if you have a favorite cookie, he'll make a batch. If not, buying a pint of your favorite ice cream is his go-to.
Out of all the boys, he gets the vibes down perfectly. He's in matching silk pajamas with slippers ready to do face masks and eat ice cream with you. If you decide you want to go out, just tell him what you're interested in doing and he'll plan the whole thing down to the detail. He'll even keep a couple of spare pads in his pockets just in case.
Nishiki just wants to take your mind off of things. He thinks that's the best medicine for a lot of things so it's his go-to method for comforting you. Type of guy to lay in bed with you when you're having bad pains and just talk with you through the pain.
Daigo Dojima
He's like Ryuji in that his schedule won't always allow him to spend as much time doting on you as he'd like. However, his method is less over the top and more down to earth. Before he heads out for work in the morning, he'll gently rouse you to let you know he has to go and say something like "Be sure to call me if you need anything, okay?" before giving you a kiss.
If he has enough downtime between meetings and if you've decided to stay home all day, he'll swing by with some lunch and a bouquet of your favorite flowers. Even if you tell him it's not necessary to do all of this, he'll insist on it. He grew up with a headstrong mother and watched her work with the Tojo Clan regardless of any period pains she felt, so by contrast he's very gentle with you, doing things for you that his father never really did for his mother.
Daigo will take his private care to go get anything you need. A Tojo Clan member may offer to run this errand for him but he wants to do it himself as it matters a lot to him that he takes care of you. Plus, he thinks it's weird to make one of his employees go get sanitary products for his partner.
At the end of the day, Daigo is a sleepy boy who works way too hard. The both of you will end up snuggled in bed, his hand resting warmly over your stomach. He'll sleepily claim that it's the same thing as you having a hot water bottle on your stomach, but you both secretly know it's just an excuse for you two to be as close together as possible. Not that either of you mind, of course.
Mine Yoshitaka
First of all, do NOT ask Mine to go to the store for you because he will be too scared to admit that he doesn't know what to get and he will bring home one of everything you asked for in every variation he could find. Give the man a list. He's too stubborn to ask for help for his own good.
Unlike Ryuji or Daigo, he'll take a whole day off work if you asked him to during your period. If his secretary asks why, he'll just say "It's that time and they need me" before brushing past her and going to see you. It sounds cryptic but he isn't about to run about telling everyone you're having your period as he values your privacy and doesn't want anyone snooping about to bother you two.
If you insist that he be a good boy and stay at work like he ought to, he'll grumble a bit but listen. However, he will still call you fairly regularly and ask if you need anything or if you're in pain. Mine's too used to no one checking on him so he feels a strange responsibility to make up for that by checking on you more than he might need to.
Mine is actually a pretty good cook when he wants to be, so one of his favorite ways of comforting you is making your favorite dish. He'll say something like "You just sit back and relax honey, I'll make us dinner". He'll do all the shopping and cleaning afterwards too. Mine's been pretty self sufficient for most of his life so he can absolutely do this kind of thing without being prompted.
