ENTRY XXVI
Lucky, like lots of luck.
ALSO, SPIDER-VERSE IMPRESSIONS
Guess who got to watch Across the Spider-Verse today? [SPOILERS BELOW]
Yup, this guy! *Insert Bully Maguire dance and theme here*
Tumblr media
Alright let’s do this for the first time, yeah?
My name is Somi and I think I almost got bit by a spider the other day [1], but I took it as a sign, that I was meant to watch “Across the Spider-Verse” on opening day. However, the forces of nature itself was against me, the rain was harsh, the wind would’ve blown a lesser man apart. I got lucky like stupid lucky, like honestly, it was kind of bullshit how I weaved through and avoided the strong rain and winds.
I had an internal conflict regarding this,
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Are you crazy? We can’t go out there!
We promised ourselves that we’d get through this week to watch Spider-Verse, come hell or high water!
I’m pretty sure some parts of the city are flooding.
I missed the part where that’s my problem.
Shit, references, my only weakness.
Come on, don’t be a baby, you know how the wind works in this place. You can figure out when to get on a bus and get out at the right time without even getting wet.
You’re overestimating my power.
Am I?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I can’t believe…how did I even…My socks didn't even get wet.
Told ya!
Bullshit!
Completely. Now pick out the good seats.
I got completely lucky! Will something bad happen to me now?
Why does something bad always have to happen after something good happens?
I don’t know!?
Eh, it’ll come, but right now my eyeballs are about to-
Disgusting. But yeah, my eyeballs want to turn every frame of this movie into a poster.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Buying tickets took a lot of my budget,
It was worth it though. I readied myself for the greatest Spider-Man film of all time.
It was good.
Really solid, spectacular work even, but the movie just has so much to the point where I was questioning if it was a bit too much. Don’t get me wrong, it builds upon the leftover mysteries established by the first movie, but it isn’t as well-paced as the first movie. I understand though, it has to establish a ton of concepts which may leave non-comic book fans in the dust, it gets meta with its main conflict.
The movie had twists and turns,
That were kind of obvious to me and it felt like the characters were just taking too long to catch up to it. The movie has to juggle between two main perspectives, Miles and Gwen, so it gets messy near the end like the movie just rushes to the ending.
Besides that,
It was gooood. This is essentially what “Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness” should’ve been. You know the donut in “Everything Everywhere All at Once?” Now imagine if that thing became a sentient entity out to destroy the life of a single individual, that’s the main villain of the movie. It’s just a shame that he gets cut off from the middle part of the movie, like where’d he go? I wanted to see what he could do now, but I guess they’re saving it for “Beyond the Spider-Verse,” so I guess I can let that slide.
The Spider Civil War
It was more of Miles vs Miguel, while the other Spider people were kind of out of character, like I know some of those Spider people wouldn’t have just stood around and do nothing. At least two of my favorite Spider-Men were there, if you want to know who they are, one of them rhymes with Play and Station (I suck at rhyming), while the other one is something that I’ve already hinted to. There are a ton of cameos in this part, and honestly, I pity the guy that’s going to analyze this at 0.25x speed [2].
Alright, spoiler time, do not touch, do not read past this point. Unless you've watched the movie.
Holy shit, that ending. Miles vs Miles, clearly inspired from the Spider-Men 2 comic book, but way better! I love how messed up Earth 42 is, and I can’t wait to see what happens to Miles, his family, and for the other Spider people to come together. There are rumors of a female led Spider-Verse movie, so I think that may be what happens to Gwen’s team or something. I’m betting that Gwen recruits some of the wackier members of the Web of Life and Destiny, like Supaidaman.
A thing that I really didn’t like from the film,
Was how they recapped the events of the first film, like the first film’s important to this one, but it’s like they recapped it around 2-3 times, since the film did kind of open twice with Gwen and Miles’ perspectives. Once the ball gets rolling, oh it gets rolling. It did kind of annoy me how Peter B. Parker was constantly just flexing his baby around, but I guess he was just kind of happy, unlike some other Spider-Men that just won’t grow up thanks to Zeb- I mean, well-meaning writers [3].
I really like Miles’ role in the story,
He’s much more confident and active, choosing to do what’s right, even when the odds, facts, and destiny itself were stacked against him. Because that’s who Spider-Man is, who he should be. There’s a fantastic sequence in the movie that comes close to the “What’s Up Danger?” scene in the first one, expect this scene is haunting, utterly frightening with Miles being surrounded by the warnings that were given to him in the first movie and in this one. Good shit.
Alright spoiler moment done,
After the movie, the rain and wind somehow got worse, like it was completely bad. So, I decided to get take out, and a girl was giving out coupons because hers were about to become expired. I took one and got a massive discount.
My take out took a really long time though,
Not like I minded the rain and wind were still too strong.
Somehow, and someway…
Once I got my food, the rain and wind stopped. My mind froze with how much bullshit luck I’ve been having. Like, I get lucky, but never this lucky, it’s honestly horrifying. I did not want to die, I still need to see how Miles’ story ends!
So uh,
            Yeah, that’s pretty much it.
Go watch the movie.
Tumblr media
Addendum:
I've added an image of what I was wearing when watching Spider-Verse, may my lucky uniform rub off on you too.
Somehow, because of the bad weather, all of my remaining requirements for this semester got 10x lighter.

wicked for the ask game :0
Why, I'm glad you asked, May :D *whips out PowerPoint presentation*
Blorbo (favorite character, character I think about the most)
Glinda. It's the layers for me. Girls who've been raised to be the epitome of an elegant, diplomatic, heterosexual, heteroromantic gentlewoman—yet there's someone different stifled underneath.
Scrunkly (my “baby”, character that gives me cuteness aggression, character that is So Shaped)
Chistery my snow monkey friend <3
Scrimblo bimblo (underrated/underappreciated fave)
Nessarose. To start, neither the book nor musical have the best portrayals of her disability (the musical especially). But within both portrayals are some truly fascinating ideas; she's incredibly devoted to religion, a stark contrast to Elphaba's critique of it. Unfortunately, she does often get forgotten or sidelined. I have yet to write her myself, to be honest, but ahh she's really interesting!
Glup shitto (obscure fave, character that can appear in the background for 0.2 seconds and I won’t shut up about it for a week)
That one ensemble member that goes: "GLINDA! exactly how dead is she?!"
Poor little meow meow (“problematic”/unpopular/controversial/otherwise pathetic fave)
Elphaba and Glinda are each poor little meow meows in their own way
Horse plinko (character I would torment for fun, for whatever reason)
Avaric. I would bully that frat boy so hard
Eeby deeby (character I would send to superhell)
So, ahem. Does...does Gregory Maguire himself count? That Philosophy Club chapter should be more than enough reason. If you don't know what I'm referring to, uh...don't worry about it go back to bed

my unhinged thoughts on spiderman no way home in three parts (spoiler warning)
tbh only the second is directly a thought about nwh, the other is just my unfiltered thoughts about spiderman as a whole
also each section has a little synopsis at the end :]
1. tobey maguire
2. mcu spiderman evolution
3. the quote
1. tobey maguire
i love tobey's spiderman. i grew up on it, watched his films religiously (aside from the third one which i only watched one or two times before i decided it was okay to ignore). i think tobey did a great job playing the role.
however.
i think everybody bases their opinion on spiderman media based off of tobey's spiderman, especially people who don't read comics (which is most people if we're being honest). tobey's spiderman, while still fantastic, i feel isn't a fully accurate portrayal of peter parker.
peter parker isn't a total nerd, he doesn't get insanely bullied - hell, he's dated multiple very attractive women, and even dated two at the same time !! peter parker is a bit of a nerd, sure, but he's not a freak. he's more of like,,,a lone wolf type. he doesn't even consider flash his bully or enemy (i don't quite remember how he referred to flash, but it wasn't in any negative connotation).
tobey's peter is a nerd. he's kinda weird and awkward and he gets bullied. and obviously that's not tobey's fault, he was just playing the character how he was written, and i think he did a great job. but i don't think his character should be the end-all for peter parker's. i think, while he did a great job on his role, it isn't the only way to perceive spiderman.
i think tobey's movies shaped a lot of people's views on spiderman and still impact them. so many people grew up on him and are devoted to him. i think this makes people look down on andrew garfield or even tom holland, at least a little. and if they don't, their biases from growing up on tobey maguire still impacts the way they perceive and discuss the other spidermen.
so - i think tobey maguire played a great spiderman and peter parker, but i don't think he's like. the ultimate spider-man. peter parker should change with time, and we should accept that tobey's spiderman isn't the most perfect depiction of him.
2. mcu spiderman evolution
i am also guilty of being partial to tobey maguire because i grew up on his movies. however. i think mcu peter parker had the potential to be one of, if not the best peter parker and spiderman stories out there.
i love the original, basic story line for peter parker (uncle ben, great power great responsibility, poor kid in ny, etc etc) but i think what the mcu set up is beautiful and fixes many of the complaints people previously had about mcu peter parker.
in the mcu, from the moment we met spiderman, he wasn't just a poor kid from new york. yeah, he still wasn't well off, and he was still living with his aunt, but we have no mention of his parents or uncle ben - we don't know spiderman's origin story. and, in addition to all that, he has access to incredible tech and nearly all the help he needs through tony stark.
i absolutely adore mcu peter parker and his relationship with tony stark. i think what was set up was beautiful and i still love the story line. however, it does mean that mcu peter parker is fundamentally different from the other peter parker's that we know.
and then. no way home happens.
i think it's beautiful. aunt may's death is more impactful (to me, at least) than any uncle ben's death was because we had more connection to her, we knew and loved her as a character. she was more than just a plot device, which i feel uncle ben often is. she is peter's origin story, she is his motivation. peter stands for the same thing aunt may stood for because her sacrifice and love meant so much to him and impacted him so much.
so now, we have the origin story. one that (again, to me) may be even more impactful than the original uncle ben story line. and then when we get to the end of no way home, peter doesn't have anything that he had at the beginning of the mcu franchise. he doesn't have tony stark, his tech, or his money. he doesn't have aunt may or his friends. he is just a poor teenager living in new york with motivation and determination. that is the peter parker we love and know, through and through.
so - mcu fixed their original "flaws" in their peter parker and gave us a story that might have more meaning than the classic story we are often given with peter parker
3. the quote
so. the quote.
it was finally said in the mcu and finally gave peter the motivation and origin we needed.
except. it was a little different.
the quote originally from the comics was "with great power, there must also come great responsibility." however, this is often misquoted (which it was in both tobey and andrew's movies) as "with great power, comes great responsibility."
while the second one is smoother and flows off the tongue a bit easier, i think the first one is more impactful and a bit more accurate. the second one says that the responsibility comes with the power, but the first one says that with the power, you must also have great responsibility. while a small difference, the difference is still there.
let me break it down a little.
"with great power, comes great responsibility" - when you have great power, you will have great responsibility. when you have power, you have responsibility. with power, you become responsible.
except that's the problem. so many people with great power aren't responsible, and that's where so many problems are. they have responsibility to be good to the people - that's a choice they can make, sure, but they've never given themselves that responsibility. for example, in no way home - peter was not responsible for sending the villains home safely. but he chose to do so. he chose to give himself that responsibility because of the power he had.
"with great power, there must also come great responsibility" - when you have power, you must give yourself responsibility. with power, you must gain responsibility.
this is far more accurate and far more impactful to peter's story. as stated before - peter doesn't have to be responsible. he doesn't have to be a good guy and give himself these responsibilities. but he chooses to. he chooses to because he knows the power he has, and he knows the impact he has.
so - while i think the misquoted line is still important and impactful, i think it's slightly less impactful than the original line. i am glad that mcu spiderman heard the original line and i think it better reflects his character and the choices he faces.

he music business is full of hard-luck stories, but no Austin band rose faster and fell harder than metal band Pariah in the 1990s. Like Guns N’ Roses three years earlier, they were signed to Geffen Records by golden boy talent scout Tom Zutaut. But there were no multiplatinum records or stadium tours for the former classmates at Clark High School in San Antonio.
“We were on the label for five years and have only one album to show for it,” said singer Dave Derrick. “It was a frustrating time, to say the least.”
After relocating to Austin in 1990, Pariah regularly sold out 1,000-capacity venues, but on their final show, soon after officially being dropped by Geffen in 1995, they played to less than 300 at their home club, the Back Room.
Two weeks later, the band’s bassist and driving force, Sims Ellison, put a shotgun to his face and pulled the trigger.
But in taking his own life, Ellison, who suffered from anxiety and depression for years, eventually helped save the lives of other musicians. His suicide was the inspiration for the SIMS Foundation, which provides low-cost mental health services to uninsured musicians who, because of irregular working hours, low pay, easy access to alcohol and drugs and often-volatile intraband relationships, have a unique set of psychological needs.
“Anytime SIMS sets up anywhere in the public, we have at least one person come up to us and say they wouldn’t be there if it wasn’t for SIMS,” said Tricia Forbes, executive director of the foundation.
Ellison didn’t drink or smoke, but the band was his life. When it crumbled and his mates, including younger brother Kyle Ellison, went their separate ways after nearly 10 years of constant camaraderie, it was apparently too much for 28-year-old Sims Ellison. On top of that, his girlfriend of nearly three years, then-unknown actress Renee Zellweger, had broken up with him six months earlier.
“I miss him every day,” says Pariah singer Dave Derrick, who will play a Pariah tribute set Saturday at the Austin Music Hall as part of the 15th anniversary SIMS Foundation Benefit Bash. “It bothers me that most people only remember Sims as the guy who killed himself, if they know him at all. He was the sweetest guy you could meet, with a goofy sense of humor. He spent every waking hour working on making Pariah as successful as possible.”Pariah drummer Shandon Sahm, who currently plays with the Meat Puppets, recalls Sims Ellison as full of nervous energy. “He used to say, ‘If you ain’t stressed, it ain’t happening,’” said Sahm, the youngest son of Texas music legend Doug Sahm.
“If he was in a place where people knew him as Sims, the bass player for Pariah, he was totally cool,” said Derrick. “But if he was in any other social situation, he couldn’t cope. He’d show up at a backyard barbecue and pace for 10 minutes and leave.” Derrick said he never saw Sims Ellison finish a plate of food. “He would constantly stir his food, but not eat it.”
Derrick wondered if two middle school incidents forged Sims Ellison’s social phobia. “When he was about in eighth grade he bought a Mötley Crüe T-shirt at a concert and was robbed of it at knife-point in the bathroom. Then a few months later, a bully went up to him at the mall in front of his friends and cold-cocked Sims for no reason. Knocked him out just to show off,” Derrick said. “He knew that, as a member of Pariah, he was protected — no one was going to hurt him.”
The three years with Zellweger, when the band was signed to Geffen, were Sims Ellison’s happiest, Sahm said. Zellweger’s best friend at the time, her “Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation” co-star Lisa Newmyer, dated Kyle Ellison, younger than Sims by three years, and the four practically lived together at the Railyard Apartments downtown.
In December 1994, Zellweger split with Sims Ellison and moved to LA, where “Jerry Maguire” would make her a star less than two years later.
Derrick said Sims Ellison bought himself a shotgun for Christmas that month.
Meanwhile, Geffen Records had decided to drop Pariah and pay the band $50,000 to dissolve the two-album deal. The band, rounded out by guitarist Jared Tuten, decided to take a hiatus after one last show at the Back Room.
“Sims was really bummed about everything,” said Derrick, “and I told him he really should get a dog. His eyes lit up and he said, ‘That’s a great idea!’” That was the last time Derrick saw Sims Ellison, who got a job at Urban Outfitters on the Drag two weeks before his death.
“Some people were theorizing that he killed himself because Renee left him or because the band was being dropped, but it was deeper than that,” Derrick said. “Being on Geffen was worse than being dropped by Geffen. That wasn’t it. There was something inside him that none of us could see. You play it back in your head, like ‘I should’ve done this or done that,’ but the truth is that we were all in shock when it happened.”
David Garza, who will serve as music director for Saturday’s benefit, is one of thousands of Austin musicians helped by the assistance program inspired by the Sims Ellison tragedy. “I was having a hard time a few years ago with a personal relationship and with my label,” said Garza, who released two critically acclaimed but soft-selling albums on Atlantic in 1998 and 2001. “I was raised Mexican American Catholic. We didn’t go to therapy — that was for weirdos. If you had a problem, you went to confession.” But Garza had musician friends who’d been helped by SIMS, which provides counseling and psychiatric services and refers clients to a network of 60 therapists and treatment centers that charge greatly reduced rates. With an operating budget of $600,000 a year (about 25 percent of which comes from KGSR’s “Broadcasts” CD), SIMS helps an estimated 600 Austin musicians a year.
Obviously, such musician-aimed services weren’t available to Pariah, whose disappointing career could be summed up by the night in early ’94 when the members gathered around the TV to watch their video for “Powerless” debut on MTV’s “Headbangers Ball.” They waited and waited for almost three hours until just before 2 a.m., when their video aired, the last one of the night.
Signed after a South by Southwest showcase in 1990, Pariah had to wait almost three years until the release of “To Mock a Killing Bird” in 1993. In between, Nirvana exploded and grunge made Pariah’s brand of glam metal obsolete.
“Pariah had the worst timing ever,” said the band’s co-manager Wayne Nagel, who founded the SIMS Foundation in June 1995 with his Austin Rehearsal Complex partner Don Harvey and Sims’ father, Houston oil engineer Don Ellison. “If the record had come out the year after they were signed, it would’ve been a whole different story.” Instead the band was forced to wait more than two years while Geffen threw all its clout and resources into the much-delayed Guns N’ Roses “Use Your Illusion” two-album project.
“Sims was saying, ‘What are we going to do? Metal’s not cool anymore,‘” Sahm said of one of Ellison’s obsessions. “We started off as a hard rock band like Guns N’ Roses and somewhere along the line we turned into Smashing Pumpkins. Still, I think we were getting better as a band by expanding our horizons.”
Geffen didn’t see it that way, according to Nagel. “Zutaut was the king of metal,” Nagel said of the A&R man who signed Mötley Crüe and Metallica before Guns N’ Roses. “He wanted the band to keep it metal.”
Treated like kings by Geffen before “To Mock a Killing Bird” came out, the band couldn’t get phone calls returned when the album didn’t take off.
Pariah met Zutaut, who did not answer an e-mail request for comment, backstage at SXSW 1990 after a scorching set at the Back Room. “He said he didn’t have time to sign another band, but that, just by him coming backstage, we were going to get signed,” Sahm said, with a laugh.
Nagel said Pariah received eight offers from labels after that SXSW appearance. It turns out that Zutaut did sign Pariah to Geffen, but he wasn’t kidding about being too busy. “It was all about Guns N’ Roses,” said Derrick. “We weren’t the only band put on hold.”
Sahm said, looking back, the band should’ve signed with Chrysalis, who Photoshopped a group photo of the band so they looked at home inside the label’s headquarters. “They loved our song ‘Shatter Me’ and were ready to put it out to radio right away. But instead we went with the big shot. Chrysalis couldn’t give us a $100,000 advance, but Geffen did.” The label also gave Pariah a $250,000 recording budget that soared to $500,000 by the time the album was finished at Madonna’s Maverick recording studio in LA. (Sims Ellison hit it off with Madonna and appeared in her “Deeper and Deeper” video.)
“We were young and stupid,” Derrick said of signing with Geffen for the upfront money. “But we were all in it together. If there was any motto with Pariah, it was ‘The band comes first.’”
The SIMS Foundation, named after a lovable, yet troubled Austin musician, was formed for what comes next.

I’m here to prove that Andrew Garfield’s portrayal of Spider-man/peter parker in The Amazing Spider-Man is objectively the best love action adaptation of the character. In this essay I will....(yes this is really happening)
Edit: 10/20/20- i want to indulge myself in spiderman content but finding non mcu spiderman content is exhausting so imma update this instead
TL;DR
Andrew Garfield is my favorite of the 3 Spider-Man actors. TAS’s Peter is more fun and dynamic than the cookie cutter “shy introverted nerd that has a crush on a girl who’s way out of his league” Peter in Tobey Maguire’s movies. I enjoy Tom Holland’s portrayal of the character, but hate the way Disney has written the movies.  I enjoy the characters, plot, and humor of The Amazing Spider-Man far more than the other 2, and i deeply wish we had gotten the third movie with the canon BIder-Man of Andrew’s (and my) dreams.
[DISCLAIMER: I HAVE NOT SEEN THE AMAZING SPIDERMAN 2 OR ANY MCU SPIDERMAN MOVIES OUTSIDE OF CLIPS AND REVIEWS ITS ALSO BEEN A VERY HOT MINUTE SINCE IVE SEEN A TOBEY MAGUIRE MOVIE]
Characterization
Most arguments against Andrew Garfield’s Spidey( AG’s from now on) begin and ends with “he was a good Spider-Man but a bad Peter Parker”. This references an outdated post comparing all three Spidey actors.(Id attach the image here but i dont want the post to be too long(thats a lie this is so long what am i doing with my life)) The post also claims that Tobey played a good Peter and a poor Spidey; and that Tom is good at both “roles”.(Honestly I think it seems silly that this seems obey the “third time’s the charm” rule but thats just me).  Most people using this seem to be Tobey stans who have forgotten or ignored the rest of the post funnily enough, but the ones that go further into the WHY AG is a poor Peter are also incorrect. This argument also ignores the idea that there can be more than one version of Peter Parker which is blatantly incorrect.  Just look at Into the Spiderverse or the PS4 game; these provide 4(5 if you count the pig) versions of Peter themselves, and that doesnt even include the comics.
Arguments that go further in depth claim that the AS Peter is too cool or well liked by his peer to be a “true” Peter Parker. The evidence for this seems to be that Peter has a skateboard.(which what? didnt realize that having a skateboard would instantly make you cool brb guys). Adding to that i dont really see where people get the idea that Peter is popular or well liked. While looking for complaints i found this qutoe from reddit(theyve since deleted it looks like but i’ll add a link in the notes) “He's angsty, pretty socially awkward, has an aptitude for science, and is kind of an outsider. He gets bullied by Flash and he gets his ass kicked after trying to stand up to Flash. He isn't a "cool" person in any way (until the ending, in which he's best buds with Flash, so I'll give you that). While Maguire is more accurate to the 60s comics where Peter in high school is just a fucking loser with basically no friends, in the ultimate comics, Peter is more of the kid who has a small amount of friends, but isn't popular.”. Honesty i fully agree with this because once again, other versions of a character are allowed to exist. You can dislike one version, but its silly to dislike something for not being exactly like another thing.
Ive also heard that Peter isnt “nerdy enough” in this movie which really doesnt make any sense considering the entire plot happens because Peter was looking into some of his parents’ research. If he wasn't interested in looking further into his father’s work what reason would he have to go to Oscorp where he’s bitten by the spider? Why would he have become Dr. Conner’s assistant? If he wasn’t intelligent how did he develop the web shooters?(something that Tobey!Peter doesn't have to do out of plot convenience might i add).
Another complaint i see is that the quips he uses in the movie(the first one specifically it seems) makes him seem like an asshole. Honestly thats a fair complaint, but i think its a good bit of characterization; espcially if he does get better about it in the second movie like the internet suggests. The Peter in this movie is a rightfully angsty teen; of course he acts a bit of an ass to criminals(also i feel like its important to mention that he’s like that to criminals? its not like hes being a dick for no reason).
Compare this with the Tobey Maguire(TM) movies. Like i said i haven’t seen these in awhile but as far as i’m aware TM’s Peter doesn't really do anything particularly nerdy in the film? I may have forgotten something( ok in the scene before he gets bitten he knows a cool spider fact) but he doesn’t have to invent the web-shooters because they came with his powers and he’s only at Oscorp in the first place because it’s a school field trip that he appears to be taking photos for. This Peter does fit the definition of outcast(friendless and bullied for it), but honestly i just dont like him. He’s weird and something about the character makes me feel like i should be a little grossed out every time he looks at MJ at the beginning of the movie.
I honestly don’t have any complaints for Tom Holland’s(TH’s)Spidey. Tom is a great actor and from what ive seen i enjoy his portrayal of the character.( He made me cry when i character i actively dislike died).
Story
I cant really say much for TAS story. It’s interesting but nothing special really. However, there is one scene that i don’t think i’ve seen anything like since( the closest would probably be the train scene in the original trilogy).
The crane scene. Early in the film Peter saves a boy from a car that has fallen off of a bridge, and at the end of the movie this becomes relevant again when it is uncertain that Peter will be able to get to the lizard to stop him in time.(as Peter is already injured and pretty far from the lizard’s location). The boy’s father is then revealed to be a construction worker who recognizes that Spider-man is going to need help to get to the lizard; he remembers how Spider-Man saved his son and organizes the rest of the construction workers to build a path out of crane arms for SM to swing from. All of them are putting themselves in danger by not evacuating, but SM’s actions in the first act of the film motivate them to do what’s right.
I love this scene primarily because it highlights something that i think is a really important part of Spider-Man’s character; his connection to the people he saves. SM is often shown interacting with and chatting with the people he has saved after the fact. One comic shows Peter accidentally scaring some bullies and then taking the time to ride the bus to school with them to continue their conversation and educate the students on bullying.( There’s definitely more but this is off the top of my head).
Another scene in TAS that i love is shortly before the crane scene when Peter is originally attempting to make his way across the city to stop the lizard, and he is shot down by the police. They manage to unmask him before Peter comes to his senses( he had just been shot and fallen pretty far out of the sky in his defense). From there Peter is able to deal with the police while keeping any of them from getting a good look at his face. The one cop he cant take out happens to be Gwen Stacey’s father who had previously had an argument with Peter about Spider-Man(Peter obviously on SM’s side and Mr. Stacey against SM). Peter turns and allows Captain(?) Stacey to see his face. I believe that this is an example of an unwilling identity reveal done right. i really enjoyed this moment because Peter had just shown that he likely could have gotten out of this encounter with his identity in tact as he had just taken down however many men. This implies that it was an active choice on Peter’s end to trust that Captain Stacey would ultimately do the right thing and allow Peter to go fight the Lizard, rather than a final desperate attempt to get away unscathed. Whether or not this interpretation of the scene is correct or not it still gives the character a bit more agency than some versions have done with their identity reveals.
In Spider-Man 2 Peter starts to lose his powers because he’s having internal conflict about wether or not he should be Spider-Man. Honestly thats kinda neat and i might want to give that a rewatch. As for the one i have seen i don’t have any complaints. I do however prefer the way that Peter was bitten in TAS because it was a result of him poking around where he shouldn’t’ve been rather than him just happening to be standing in the right place for a spider to land on him.
Onto TH’s movies; the way Disney has treated Spidey in the MCU is why TH’s is my least favorite version of the character. I feel like too much of the story revolves around Iron Man; Iron Man made Peter’s suit and equipment, Iron Man introduces Peter to the MCU(via blackmail but thats another rant for another annoyingly long post), its Iron Man that “makes” Spidey in this universe rather than Spidey being self-made. In Homecoming(which remember i havent seen outside of clips so bear with me) most of the conflict is cause directly or indirectly by Tony’s refusal or inabilty to communicate with the teenager he’s meant to be mentoring
For one the entire incident with the ferry could have very easily been avoided had Tony bothered to communicate with Peter enough to tell him that the situation was being taken care of. On top of that at the moive’s climax Peter is shown trying to get in contact with Happy(from what ive picked up isnt he a chauffeur? like idk his deal i just know he’s someone Peter got pawned off onto after Civil War). Peter even goes as far as to somehow hack into Happy’s phone(i think thats what happened it was a weird tech thing that shouldve been a red flag that the call was important though) but instead of listening; Peter is ignored. If this was a different kind of movie Peter literally could have died and itd be the fault of Happy and Tony like..... A large portion of conflict comes from characters being incompetent and not communicating and thats just poor storytelling.
Before this turns too much into an anti mcu rant id also like to say that the way they did Civil War was really dumb considering that Peter defects to Cap’s side in the comics, but whatever.
Also i loathe the way they handled the identity reveal at the end of Far From Home. With MCU movies most people know to expect an end credits scene by now, but typically that scene is not important to understand what’s happening in the films; they just aren’t important. Putting an identity reveal here makes it seem significantly less important than it is. On top of that i dislike their use of J Jonah Jameson for this scene.
JJJ is a character who has been repeatedly shown to have a genuinely good heart. All of his anger comes from a place of love for his city(he even says this hemself in the ps4 game when May writes in to tell him that he needs help). He hates Spider-Man because SM reminds him of the masked man who killed his wife; JJJ has never been able to get past that( and Peter’s antagonism of him definitely doesnt help) However, JJJ has been shown to care for people; he has a son who he often brags about, and one comic shows that JJJ is paying Peter for “amateur” quality photos because he knows that Peter is having a hard time and just need some help”. JJJ has even learned Peter’s identity before and kept his secret for him(seriously though i cant remember the name of the comic but its defiantly worth the read), and in the original trilogy when Goblin threatens JJJ he claims that he doesn’t know who sends in the photos of Spidey because he does it via email( this is a lie). The MCU will have a very difficult time convincing me that JJJ would ever out a teenager’s identity and put him in danger like that. It goes too far against his character.(this could be hypocritical of me to say considering how i just insisted that multiple versions of a character can exist but whatever ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)
This is accidentally turning into an MCU rant but id also like to say that i hate the lack of a TH!Spidey origin movie because it gives you no motivaion for Peter becoming SM or explanation of his powers; most people will know these things but if youre unfamiliar with the character its bound to be confusing(and im a sucker for origin movies)

Quarintine book #1: Spidey vol 1
I've been meaning to do this earlier but better late then never
I have been wanting to read this book for a while but never seemed to have the time but now that I have read it I am glad I did. This book is a delight and I'm going to get the cons out of the way so I can start praising this book.
Also spoilers!!
Cons:
I love Gwen Stacy but in this book she makes awful decisions with who she allows to take her to the dance and I hate it
Flash Thompson is shown as a straight up bully who pushes Peter and dunks his head into the toilet and yet Gwen still goes to the dance with him??? I think not
This is more of a pet peeve but like nobody knows Tony Stark is Iron Man and they bring it up so often that I can just imagine RDJ saying all these lines really sarcastically like "oh yeah my genius boss Tony Stark" it's probably slightly more pro but it still bugged me
Every single issue opens up with the orgin story and that would've been fine in issue #1 but it keeps going throughout almost the entire book so I just stopped reading the recap it was the same drawings and everything
They make you think Spider-Man is going to die
I was stupid and spilled water on my book so the pages are crinkled
Now that we've got that out of the way here's the pros
Pros:
There are so many really cool references to other movies including the Tobey maguire ones but also the Andrew Garfield ones which I thought was really nice since alot of people hate on those movies
There's this really cute exchange with Peter and this kid that helps him get up when he was beaten down real hard and he gives Spidey a sandwich and they switch masks and it's so wholesome
Gwen Stacy is so adorable and I want her and Peter to be together forever
She even gets his Lord of the rings reference
They tutor each other
Green goblin is great and both Peter and Norman seeing each other's wounds then being like "naw it can't be the other person it's impossible" was really good
Harry Osborn is a minor but good friend to Peter
I will always love Peter being a photographer to help out his aunt with the finances it is so wholesome
Iron Man being an ok mentor towards Peter makes alot of sense like he gives him advice but the advice is already too late and fits better then just Tony Stark being perfect at giving advice and it going well
Also they fight a dragon together
I love Spider-Man so much and this comic is good
The bunny robber has a really cute design and I saw that she was in this after I bought an older comic featuring her in it what a coincidence
The tiny lizards are so cute and Peter just gives them to a zookeeper 🤣
Peter calls Tony Mr Stark in every universe
Iron Man thinking Spider-Man is trying to steal Tony Stark's stuff but it's the vulture
The entirety of Peters first interactions with the Vulture
He's like how do you know I'm a teenager
And the vultures like you just asked me to the winter formal??
And then the next bubble I imagine in a really fake deep voice where Peter is like "uuhhh no I'm just a chaperone"
A different villain every issue gives alot of variety
Overall it was a great book and I liked it alot especially good if you want to get into comics and don't know where to start because this series only has like 2 volumes and tells his orgin story.
If you have any questions about comic books I'll try to answer 😅

Nadine Dorries Accuses Tory MP Behind ‘Blackmail' Claim Of 'Attention Seeking'
Tumblr media
Nadine Dorries, who ate ostrich anus on TV, has accused a Tory MP who claims to have faced “intimidation” from their party of “attention-seeking behaviour”.
Her put-down came as Conservative critics of Boris Johnson said the pressure they were put under could amount to “blackmail” as part of an effort to prevent the prime minister being ousted from office.
The PM insisted he had “seen no evidence” to support the incendiary claim made by senior Conservative William Wragg amid anger over allegations of rule-breaking parties in No 10.
In an eyebrow-raising comment, Dorries, the former I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here contestant who is now culture secretary in Johnson’s Cabinet, said: “That is nonsense because that is not how government works.
“It is just attention-seeking behaviour from William Wragg who has been a constant critic of the prime minister, who delivered us the greatest majority since Margaret Thatcher.”

— ITV News Politics (@ITVNewsPolitics) January 20, 2022
Wragg said he had received reports of conduct including “members of staff at 10 Downing Street, special advisers, government ministers and others encouraging the publication of stories in the press seeking to embarrass those who they suspect of lacking confidence in the prime minister”.
“The intimidation of a member of parliament is a serious matter. Reports of which I am aware would seem to constitute blackmail,” the chairman of the Commons public administration and constitutional affairs committee announced at the beginning of a hearing on Thursday.
“As such it would be my general advice to colleagues to report these matters to the speaker of the House of Commons and the commissioner of the Metropolitan Police.”
Many claimed Dorries’ words rang hollow given her repeated criticism of prime ministers Theresa May and David Cameron, and her headline-grabbing turn on the ITV show.

I’m a Celebrity’s Nadine Dorries is killing satire by accusing fellow MP William Wragg of “attention seeking behaviour”. Ms Dorries ate a camel’s toe, ostrich anus and cattle genitals to be on TV. Mr Wragg complained of blackmail, bribery and bullying. https://t.co/Ktn8rzIkNz

Dorries also memorably referred to Cameron and George Osborne as “arrogant posh boys”. On I’m A Celebrity, her lacklustre performance on in the “Bug Burial” Bushtucker Trial failed to win any food for her campmates, and she subsequently became the first of the 2012 ITV show’s intake to be voted off by the watching public.
Wragg is one of a handful of Tory backbenchers to have said publicly they have submitted a letter to the chairman of the backbench 1922 committee, Graham Brady, calling for a no-confidence vote in Johnson’s leadership.
He said the conduct of the government whips’ office threatening to withdraw public funding from MPs’ constituencies may have breached the ministerial code.
Christian Wakeford, the MP who defected from the Tories to Labour in protest at Johnson’s leadership and the row over Downing Street parties, said he was threatened about the loss of a school in his constituency if he did not toe the line.
Speaking to BBC North West, he said: “I was threatened that I would not get the school for Radcliffe if I did not vote in one particular way. This is a town that’s not had a high school for the best part of 10 years.”
A Labour source said the vote in question related to free school meals.
Johnson, on a visit to Taunton, said: “I’ve seen no evidence, heard no evidence, to support any of those allegations.
“What I am focused on is what we’re doing to deal with the number one priority of the British people, which is coming through Covid.”
He said he would “of course” look for evidence to support the allegations, but No 10 suggested there were no plans to launch an investigation as demanded by Labour.
Tory MP Michael Fabricant, a former whip, also described Wragg’s comments as “nonsense”.
“If I reported every time I had been threatened by a whip or if a whip reported every time I had threatened them, the police wouldn’t have any time to conduct any other police work,” he said.

'Kids aren't feeling safe at that school,' MLA says of new Halifax-area high school
J.L. Ilsley High School in Halifax is a brand new building, but the area's MLA says it has its problems.
"The overlying theme is that kids aren't feeling safe at that school," says Liberal MLA Brendan Maguire.
The school opened in September, but Maguire says it did so before it was finished.
"I find out the school was opened without security cameras, and with no fire alarms, and that they hired security to walk around the school to look for fires which I mean was absolutely mind-blowing," Maguire says.
But a spokesperson for the Halifax Regional Centre for Education disagrees.
A statement to CTV says: "Fire alarms were working on the first day of school and have been working every day since. The fire marshal inspected the system and issued a certificate of occupancy," says Doug Hadley.
Maguire also says incidents of violence are up at the school.
"I've had dozens of parents reach out to me, and just as many students and staff, too, to talk about ongoing violence at the school," he says.
The president of the Nova Scotia Teachers Union says teachers are concerned and that the current situation at the school can be traced back to cuts in staffing by the previous government.
"For us, this is really tied back to the concerns we raised last spring about the impact of cutting unassigned instructional time -- it's a 12.5 per cent staffing cut at metro high schools -- was going to have," says Paul Wozney.
Nova Scotia's education minister says if there is an increase in bullying and violence at the school, it's not being reported.
"So, we're seeing some references to it on social media, but that is not what's actually being reported to the principal," says Education Minister Becky Druhan. "We encourage anybody, students, students who have issues or incidents to have issues or incidents to go directly to the principal."
The new J.L. Ilsley High School has close to 900 students in Grades 9 to 12.
