(Okay I tried to post this as a reblog in reply to a reblog and tumblr tangled fascinatingly and it was a long post anyway so I gave up. This is re: @hirilelfwraith’s reply (above) to this post)

Runes! So this was funny, because I read this and thought "ok cool but when I worked in a bookshop I used to read the runes on the title pages of The Hobbit, and they were near-perfectly historical." And then in hubris I picked up my copy of Two Towers and looked at the runes on the title page and WHAT is going on why are some of these backwards wh-- So! I looked up a photo of the Hobbit title page, and THAT is written in historical runes, transliterated from modern English. Because runic Bs in Norse or Old English look p much like pointy modern Bs you can even pick out "Hobbit" with ease. Meanwhile, I could partially transliterate whatever's going on in my copy of Two Towers, sure, but what the hell word starts with "Ltux-". I cede the field. I leave this one to Tolkien scholars and Appendix E.

Seas!

Okay so, I should probably hold off on going too wild over the bending of the seas until I hit that actual bit of… the Silmarillion?? But I had heard a whisper of the bending of the seas, and how the elves can still live on a flat world, so I’ve been waiting to find out how much of that was cool fan meta and how much was explicitly intended; so far ppl seem to be assuring me it’s clearly stated canon? Wild, untamed, all-night fun from jrr i guess!! I love it here.

In my opinion, for what it's worth, this IS a great interpretation of early medieval stuff, actually. Tho I should really quickly caveat that with: medieval people did not think the earth was flat. The flat earth was invented in the 20th century and by Canadians, which sounds bonkers and is, but is additionally true. How Tolkien interpreted what he was reading is another matter! And I'm not as familiar with Norse sources. But even his Old English sources never ever state that the earth was flat-- they just do uh. Incredibly weird shit to the ocean. I can see why he deadass BENT IT, frankly.

For example, in the poem "Order of the World" the sun circles (the word used here usually describes something round) under the earth (under foldan fæþm) and that would be chill and all, normal sun activity, except in “Order of the World” and several other poems, the earth (shape undescribed) is like, floating in an ocean of undetermined size? So when the sun sets it goes into the ocean and “in the evening passes the ocean’s floor” (On æfenne ut garsecges grundas pæþeð), still under the actual earth itself. I dunno if Tolkien did anything with that, on purpose or intuitively, but I respect his dedication to Incredibly Weird Ocean Stuff. I am extremely not over finding out that this is canon and not an incredible and complex fan theory. What the fuck.

can we please talk about how she is the ballsiest character in mdzs.

she refuses to give wei wuxian her name and he literally doesn't find out what it is until after he fucking dies. COMMITMENT.

she refuses to dignify wei wuxian's cringy flirting.

when jin guangshan is just making shit up about wei wuxian, she not only calls him out for his bs, but literally defects from her sect in front of like every sect leader ever. this was literally RIGHT after she had been accepted as a disciple. and at least in the untamed, she was pretty close with jin zixuan, so she was giving away a HUGE opportunity to gain power.

she then goes on to continue to cultivate!! and settles down with a non-cultivator husband whom she loves so much and continues to go on night hunts.

i wish she got more time to shine in mdzs,, she's amazing

big thank you to @buddhamethods for starting this. I thought it sounded like a fun idea and just had to participate because I have Opinions™ :)

I am hitting some of these characters with only the best intentions and some of them out of pure spite

1) Shin (Bake Me Please)

if you've seen me post about this show or if you've seen it yourself, you know exactly why this guy is on here and also why he's the main reason why I just had to join in on this trend

square up, Shin, I'm hitting you with my car for all that bs and also to help with your character development a little <3

2) Way (Pit Babe)

listen I love him. after all if evil why pretty? but he's also a b*tch and he deserves to get hit by a car a little. as a treat. he's my pathetic little meow meow and I love to see him suffer (affectionate) <3

I'm also doing this as a public service so that Babe and Charlie can stay in their weird mama & papa boyfriends era without Way pulling his mind fuckery tricks on Babe

3) Kim (Kinnporsche)

hitting him with my car very lovingly simply bc he made Chay sad and we can't have that. maybe a little car accident can get him to actually admit that he's head over heels in love.

(and also because this man is way too pretty and I need to confirm that he's actually human)

4) Top (Only Friends)

listen. I believe that all of the Only Friends characters deserve to get hit by a car a little. all of them. but this man dared to say that he was serious and then went ahead and slept with someone else so. there's that.

5) Xue Yang (The Untamed/MDZS)

the most evil fucker for absolutely no reason. completely irredeemable. has the world's worst reason for being evil. I love him so much.

this guy is so fucked up that he managed to spend 3 years being all domestic with his nemesis only to realize that he actually developed feelings for him after he had already caused his death

there is absolutely no way to fix him but I'm still hitting him with my car for the amount of emotional damage he caused me with those god damn pieces of candy

6) Akk (The Eclipse)

I love him to bits and that is exactly why I'm knocking him tf out. very lovingly and rather softly but enough to give him some time off. because he deserves a break from all of the absolutely godawful authority figures in his life and what they're putting him through

7) August (Last Twilight)

this fucking b*tch.

I don't think I need to explain why I'm coming at him full speed. this is an act of public service, your honor, I'm doing nothing wrong.

8) Phee (Dead Friend Forever)

okay I know we've only had him for one single episode but this man is already stressing me out with the way he just threw away his cigarette bud in the middle of a god damn forest. sir what are you doing.

I'm only preserving the environment by hitting him with my car and getting him out of that forest, really

(also I can't pinpoint why but this guy is sus af and I don't trust him)

9) Sprite & Zee's mom (Twins)

after @buddhamethods already took care of Zee (thank you for your service), I am volunteering to take out their mom. this woman needs the world's biggest wake-up call and since her own damn son ending up in a hospital didn't seem to do the trick, maybe herself ending up there will help

10) GramBlack double feature (Not Me)

the absolute audacity of these men to not be in love? after all of that?? I'm hitting them with my car because maybe ending up in hospital beds next to each other will finally get someone to admit that that G did not stand for Eugene what the actual fuck

Much ado about nothing

I'm still getting a high volume of asks about the anti video that came out earlier this week. A lot of them appear to be thinly veiled attempts from solos/antis to cause a stir. To those people: Nice try, but you aren't fooling anyone.

However, there are still a few turtles writing me about this. Likely new turtles who are being influenced by those instigators I mentioned, and by their own inexperience with these types of things.

Fake, fan fiction, CPN.

First of all, please take the time to scroll back through my previous posts before submitting an ask. I have already given my perspective on the video, and I don't have anything to add to what I already said. Read that post if you want to know my thoughts. It covers everything I have to say on the issue.

I have already talked about the statement here. It's nearly identical to the previous one, and I talked about that one in depth. Just read that post if you want to know what I think about it.

As for how C-turtles have been taking the video, the vast majority of them have the good sense to make light of the situation and ignore the blatant attack on GG that it represents. There have been some instigators trying to create the impression that the video has been causing GG to lose fans, but don't be fooled.

Antis who are trying to instigate are wasting their time. You won't find any traction for your BS here or on Weibo. Get lost.

Turtles who are fixating on this video, please get a grip on yourselves.

Focus on GG and DD and enjoying their works. I'd be willing to bet that most of you have only ever seen The Untamed. There is so much more to enjoy. Here's a handy guide to accessing some of their key works.

So I’m going to start reading mdzs after watching 5 times the untamed and the donghua lol xD And while I was searching for the books I was thinking of JC (my love hate relationship with him is a daily struggle at this point 💀)

Like at some point JC knew that WY was alive and that he was hiding under a new identity ( at least in the live action adaptation)

So if he « hated » him so much (which I think is bs , for me he never hated WY but I’ll talk about that in another post) Why didn't he report it? He knew it was WY but he decided not to say anything... I think that this, this action means absolutely everything about JC's feelings. Despite everything that happened, he still loves his brother.

At that time he didn't know about the transfer of the GC, from his point of view he had every reason to hate him and to denounce him but he didn't do it

I’m a bookworm so till now I gobbled many novels but haven’t watched their live actions, but it was time to watch the untamed and here are a few highlights from the first 3 eps:

When I already know the story and what’s going on inside lwj, then This Scene will always completely wreck me up in every single adaptation.

This scene: *soft music playing*

Me:

Xuanli being the most awkward pair ever. There are a whole lot of seconds spent entirely on their quiet gasps and staring in silence

I beg you two, I am feeling a lot of second hand embarrassment for you

A moment of silence for this poor soul and his gay awakening

Love the subtle way of showing wwx’s bisexuality in the drama and his siblings being totally chill about it

OTP: permanent resting bitch face and a gremlin

WEN RUOHAN IS PULLING A DARTH VADER AM I HAVING A STROKE SJNSDJLKFNSDK

Wen ruohan looks like a kid who didn't get what he wanted during his childhood and later on didn't grow out of his edgy phase, so now he overcompensates as a grown ass adult but in a childish way of playing an adult version of the castle, which is just him him sitting alone in his edgy foam cave lmao

my latest fic idea, wherein jiang cheng leaves the jiang sect to become a rogue cultivator

ok so canon-compliant au where jc has enough of jfm’s shit, cuts his hair, and leaves the jiang sect

i am currently in class and very tired but this is something i saw on twitter and it has not left my mind since so lemme break it down:

some time after the indoctrination at qishan but before the attack on lotus pier

y'all know that scene where jfm tells jc that he doesn't understand what the yunmengjiang motto means

yeah that got my blood boiling because i am a #1 jc stan and fuck you jfm

so maybe instead of taking it, jc just. snaps. goes off on jfm for being a shite dad for making him feel like he was never worthy, never enough, never good enough to be acknowledged by his father etc etc. and he just. walks out

cue silence. madam yu is especially surprised and tries to call him back but he ignores her point blank

he goes to his room, packs his things, leaves his bell on the bedside table

now as yall may know, back in the day cutting your hair was a no-no because of parents and stuff and how its a link to your parents etc etc

jc stands in front of the mirror, takes his hair down, unsheathes sandu, and just when wwx and jyl walk into the room, intent on comforting him, he cuts the hair at shoulder length

cue silence pt. 2

he hugs his sister, says sorry, tells wwx to not be an idiot and take care of jyl, and walks out

cue crying

he is no longer Jiang Cheng, heir of YunmengJiang Sect. he is just another face, another cultivator

madam yu, is, understandably distraught and angry and tries to convince him to stay on his way out

he apologizes, brushes her off, and with one last glare towards his father, he walks out of Lotus Pier.

he travels for a few days before hearing that lotus pier has been attacked by the Wens

(jfm and jyl stay in lotus pier in this instead of leaving and yzy

of course, he rushes back home to see the place in flames, disciples dead and his family missing

Jfm is dead. Yzy, jyl, and wwx are missing

Jc is torn between the need to murder wc and wzl and find his family

He decides to find his family

Wwx has been caught and un-golden-cored and is now missing

Yzy is not in the best shape

she gives him zidian

jc uses his connections with lxc and nhs to get lwj over here immediately because ‘i have to find my brother and you're basically a bottom magnet’

Meanwhile yzy and jyl, with the help of the lan and nie sect, take back lotus pier

Yzy dies, big sad

Jyl is made the clan leader of yunmengjiang

Sunshot campaign happens

Oh btw wwx was tossed into burial mounds and is now: demonic cultivator

Wen chao, wlz, wlj are all dead <3

Sunshot campaign

jc is using different forms of fighting that he’s learned over the months with cultivators from other sects and is formidable as ever

Everything ends up the same, the only difference being that jiang yanli strikes up a marriage deal with lan xichen for lan wangji and wei wuxian

Jiang cheng is like ‘ok my job here is done goodbye’ and he leaves once again

He meets wen qing and the wen remnants

Goes to the phoenix mountain hunt, and with the combined alliance of the lan sect and jiang sect + a certain demonic cultivator, the jiangs take the wens to the jiang sect

Wen ning is still a corpse dude but wwx fixes that so he’s undead but still like. Walking n stuff

Yada yada wangxian wedding yada yada yanqing yada yada sperm donor jzx yada yada jin ling exists but he’s the jiang sect heir

post sunshot camapign, once the dust has settled

Jc keeps travelling and learning

He meets sl who is looking for xxc

They find him practically dead with a-qing next to him, alive, but just barely (listen idgaf abt canon ok)

Sl goes off to find xy, who killed xxc

Xxc, with his dying breath, tells jc where to find baoshan sanren and begs him to take care of a-qing

He dies :((

Jc tells lwj the address and long story short wwx gets his core back, making him x2 stronger as a demonic cultivator

Oof jin sect does not like that

Bloop fuck the jin sect, all my homies hate the jin sect

Madam jin kicks her husband out onto the streets (’thats what you get for cheating on me so much you rat bastard’)

Jiggy is also dead. There's a certain smell of lotus flowers and even a petal next to him. No one says anything because reasons

Nmj and lxc grieve their murder twink together because thats romance baby

jzx becomes the sect leader, makes mianmian head disciple and everyone’s happy

Jyl asks jc to come back to the jiang sect and be head disciple or an advisor, but he doesn’t take it

he’s welcome to cloud recesses because lqr is a bitch and would’ve liked jc over wwx and also because jc loves a-yuan and wants to see his brother often fuck you lwj

and jc is wandering the world, hunting demons, teaching his daughter about cultivation (demonic and otherwise because in this why would he hate it) and he occasionally goes home to yunmeng to see his sister and his nephew and jyl dotes on a-qing and at the end of the day he has no responsibilities and nothing to fear, and even though his father called him a coward and told him he wouldn't survive a minute alone, he knew that he had proved him wrong and attempted the impossible, and succeeded.

i wanted LWJ with a motorcycle & somehow ended up with this librarian!LWJ & art student!WWX au

LWJ is a librarian at a public library

WWX met LWJ when he returned some books 3 months late

LWJ looked at him all judgy like “these are 3 months late,” & WWX promptly became obsessed

WWX is now a much more responsible library user, mostly because he’s there all the time

but listen he’s not great at focusing in the library, that’s why he doesn’t even use the one on campus. so now he’s his usual amount of restless + distracted by LWJ

trying to figure out how to make a move

meanwhile LWJ is just like “do not throw crumpled pieces of paper through the air”

some of those crumpled pieces of paper are failed sketches of LWJ

one day WWX stays all the way to closing because LWJ PRETTY OKAY? also he has an art theory paper due pls don’t talk to him about it

so anyway he’s there when the library is closing & LWJ is like “leave”

so he goes :((( but he’s so late LWJ practically follows him out

which

is when WWX discovers that that pretty white & blue motorcycle that’s always parked out front?

that’s Lan Wangji’s

he absolutely loses his mind

all of his friends know about his ridiculous librarian crush by now & they all make fun of him for it

but anyway, the poor boy has it bad

he’s like “A-Cheng, you don’t understand, he could step on me & i’d thank him. actually i think i need him to step on me.”

JC is like “i did Not want to know that”

meanwhile WWX is bemoaning the fact that he ever became a responsible library user

“how am i supposed to interact with him. i can’t return books late anymore bc i’m always there! what would my excuse be? & he’s already explained how to use their database to me 3 times, i can’t keep looking this dumb”

JYL is very gently like “maybe just ask him out?”

“but he doesn’t like me! i committed library crimes! i have to get him to like me first!”

then WWX sees a flyer in the lobby asking for volunteers. there’s gonna be an event in the kids section! for some special reading day! who tf knows, WWX doesn’t care, the point is, he’s good with kids. that would probably be appealing to LWJ. right? right? WWX really doesn’t know. LWJ is so hard to read. on the one hand, he’s the most tight-laced & responsible person WWX has ever met. on the other, he has a very sexy motorcycle. WWX doesn’t know what to do with that

but okay he has a plan

he calls up WQ & goes “can i borrow A-Yuan”

he already babysits A-Yuan every week, so it’s not that weird right?

WQ is like “i stg WWX if you are going to use A-Yuan to attract hot guys like in that movie with the people who love dogs....”

& WWX is like “i would never use A-Yuan like a dog! WQ do you even know me!”

he gets A-Yuan, barely

anyway, he gets to the library ready to read to a bunch of kids & gets side-eyed by a lot of parents, but he still has fun!!

LWJ is, unfortunately, not the librarian supervising the event, but he is reshelving when WWX is off reading duty & A-Yuan gets the zoomies

ie, zooms right into LWJ’s legs

LWJ is, surprisingly, good with kids. WWX may need to marry him. he somehow manages not to make a complete fool of himself after this revelation

in fact, after this interaction, WWX thinks he may actually have scored some points with LWJ. he’s elated

he’s building all these elaborate future schemes in his head when suddenly he gets a call from Auntie Yu

she wants to know why his grade in his art theory class has plummeted.

WWX throws himself into the redo paper he manages to beg off LQR. he has 3 days & he’s gonna make them count

the first day goes well, if by well you mean that he raids the art section of the library & works himself until closing & tries desperately not to look like he’s dying in front of LWJ

day 2 goes........similarly, except he falls asleep at his desk & doesn’t wake up until LWJ tells him the library is closing, which? wtf? LWJ usually wakes him up when he falls asleep in the library. WWX has been asleep for hours.

he flees from the library only to find that the bus is going..... going......... gone

he’s staring down the road after the bus, trying to figure out which friend with a car is available for him to call when he hears someone say “Wei Ying?” behind him

& WWX is like kinda definitely freaking out because this was not how his first ride on LWJ’s sexy motorcycle was supposed to go. WWX had a plan. he was supposed to be flirtatious & ask LWJ about his bike & then LWJ would offer to give WWX a ride & they’d go all around the scenic parts of the city & when they stopped WWX would be all flustered & breathless & he’d wobble getting off the bike & maybe fall into LWJ & maybe—

okay so his plan was more like a daydream, but at the very least, he wasn’t supposed to look like he’d spent the last 48hrs out of the sun, drinking unhealthy amounts of shitty coffee, wearing a ratty hoodie & art-grimed jeans. like, they’re not even grimey in a cute way

but LWJ is insistent & WWX is weak, so somehow he ends up on the back of the bike wearing LWJ’s helmet with LWJ telling him to hold on tight

he’s half-convinced he’s fallen asleep on the bus stop bench & is dreaming the whole thing

but soon enough, it’s over & they’re stopped outside of WWX’s shitty student accommodations

he gets off & is trying to awkwardly thank LWJ when LWJ says, “you’ve seemed upset these past 2 days”

“ahaha, yeah, i’m just writing a paper”

“for an art theory class?”

WWX is like ????? but then he remembers that LWJ knows what books he checks out

“yeah. it’s a redo actually. professor Lan hates me.” he forces a laugh. why did he say that. being hated by a professor is not cute, especially not to sexy librarian LWJ.

“my uncle has high expectations,” LWJ says.

WWX brain short circuits.

“your uncle???” shit shit shit Lan Qiren is LWJ’s uncle! LWJ’s uncle hates him! he has no chance now!

“mn.”

WWX wants to die

LWJ looks considering, then says, “it is my day off tomorrow. if you would like, i can help you with the paper.”

WWX is already the least cute, most pathetic version of himself he’s ever been in his life. he says yes.

so they meet up at the library the next day & WWX apologizes profusely for making LWJ come into work when it’s his day off. he promises LWJ endless free coffee from the coffeeshop he works at (even if he has to pay for it himself—he doesn’t tell LWJ that part).

LWJ is way too nice to him & also manages to explain this school of art theory in a way that?? sort of?? makes sense?? though not in a way that makes WWX like it. but LWJ seems neutral about it, so at least he’s not trying to get WWX to agree with it.

but anyway, WWX manages to pull a passable paper together & in the process LWJ reveals that he’s noticed WWX sketching in the library a lot more than WWX realized, and that he likes WWX’s art.

WWX is lightheaded

he stares at LWJ for a while & LWJ looks at him & says, “Wei Ying. you should be typing.”

WWX gets the paper done by 5pm somehow. somehow! he sends it off to LQR with a groan of relief. he’s so tired his bones are aching, but he looks over at LWJ, art theory & citation king, who of course always looks perfect & beautiful, & goes, “i could kiss you.”

instead of “i don’t know how i’m ever going to thank you for this,” which is what he thought he was gonna say

LWJ’s eyes widen slightly & his ears go red. WWX wants to smack himself in the face. he wants to eat his words. he wants to crawl into a cramped dark place like a disgusting little mole & never see the sun again.

then LWJ says, “have dinner with me first.”

WWX gapes at him. LWJ looks back, ears still red but eyes steady.

“okay,” WWX squeaks.

they go to dinner. WWX still feels like trash, but they end up having a rousing discussion about art & WWX learns all about when LWJ studied art history in undergrad & how he actually doesn’t like the kind of theory his uncle teaches (“but you’re too good to ever tell him that,” WWX teases. “....most of the time.” WWX laughs in delight.)

LWJ reveals that he brought an extra helmet today, in case WWX needed a ride again. WWX is embarrassed & pleased & wants to marry LWJ again. feeling foolish, he leans into LWJ flirtatiously & suggests they go for a ride—just for the view. LWJ looks at him so long his knees turn to jelly. then LWJ says, “mn.”

An important reminder that this is just a 🍉 rumor, and totally unverified. All 🍉 are just 🍉. To be taken with a huge grain of 🧂. I often see fans quoting these rumors as though they’re true, and that’s how false information gets embedded into the fandom. Please always qualify rumors as rumors.

This one seems to be a continuation of the overall theme that he's supposedly refusing romantic roles, etc. There are reasons to believe this could be true, and some reasons to be very skeptical.

Fake, fan fiction, CPN.

A lot of people (myself included) were expecting heavy fan service with OOL when it came out, but despite a bit during Weibo night 2020, we really didn’t see any. Instead, we got a steady diet of high fructose turtle candy from GG throughout the airing and promo for the drama.

I suspect the plan had initially been to do heavy fan service for the drama, but the shifts in the entertainment industry climate and in how fan wars are handled (artists are held fully responsible for them now, and there are consequences for failing to manage fans) led to a shift in how the project was marketed. We don’t know what all happened behind the scenes or what the teams involved discussed and decided, but it seems to me inevitable that things would change given all the changes in the industry climate. There could also have been other reasons (or I could just be wrong).

BXG often talk about GG’s rumored refusal to take on romantic roles and his rumored refusal to do CP marketing for upcoming projects as though it has something to do with DD, and I think that’s highly unlikely to be true. I talked recently about why BXG’s investment in the GGDD jealousy trope is unhealthy, offensive and even dangerous. It’s just not something BXG should be pushing/claiming about GGDD (not saying that’s what you are doing, here, Anon, but you left it vague and I know a lot of fans are into that stuff so it bears repeating).

In my previous post about the romantic role rumor I talked about some of the reasons why GG might refuse romantic roles, and those reasons all apply to why he might also refuse CP fan service. None of them have anything to do with DD. I’ll just restate those reasons here:

GG is a serious actor who wants interesting projects of substance and depth, and to shed his ‘idol’, ‘traffic star’ image. Part of shedding that image needs to involve engaging in projects in ways that don't encourage that kind of image/fan reaction.

GG is constantly having to deal with fan wars and controversies, and it's no doubt a huge headache for him and his team. Nothing - NOTHING - generates more of that BS than CP/romance stuff.

GG likely doesn't want to deal with straight relationship rumors, and CP marketing tends to lead to shipping and relationship rumors. Such rumors are a threat to his career. Celebrities in that region are marketed on a fantasy of romantic availability, and if they are thought to be in a serious relationship that can kill a career. It's why even straight celebrities hide their relationships.

I think that this all goes doubly, triply with CP marketing, moreso than romantic roles. Someone who deals with the kind of BS GG is constantly having to deal with - all the fan wars and rumors and controversy and being dismissed as a traffic star - all that stuff is a bane on his career. If he doesn’t take on CP marketing, let me guarantee you those are infinitely more important reasons than anything BXG clownery can cook up.

Now, I think it’s likely that GG also has personal reasons for being uncomfortable with straight fan service, but we can’t pretend they’re his primary motivation. I don’t think they would be, not by any stretch of the imagination.

Also, just a bit of a reality check/reminder for BXG - GG didn’t really do CP marketing for The Untamed, either. Of course, I think that he had strong personal reasons to be uncomfortable with marketing involving his real relationship, but I still think it’s something worth remembering in this context. It’s not like this - if true - would be a shift in policy for him.

There are also reasons to be skeptical of these rumors. After all, they’re 🍉 rumors, and 🍉exist solely to gossip. A lot of the stuff they post is entirely made up, with the aim of getting clicks and clout, or even to intentionally stoke up fan wars or harm celebrities reputations. Nothing generates more interest and traffic than controversy, and few things are more controversial than CP/romance rumors (and rumors about GG in general).

So like I said, take it all with a grain of 🧂. In fact, I strongly believe that people who take 🍉 seriously should not be reading them at all.

Of course, that’s just my 2 cents on the topic. Others might disagree, but this is how I see it.
