It’d have been fun if Azula was Korra’s firebending teacher. Okay, listen, consider the redemption arc for Azula happened like decades ago when Aang was alive blah blah. Korra’s a known and recognized prodigy in bending, excellent at combat with a very heavy burden on her shoulders, sheltered by the White Lotus. Just on the basis of being prodigies, I think Azula would’ve been able to really bring out Korra’s full potential. She’d be strict and blunt, but Korra’s bull-headed and stubborn too so any challenge Azula throws at her, she’d immediately try to learn and one-up her.
IT COULD BE FUN!!! Like, Katara being Korra’s waterbending master and Azula firebending, and we;d finally get some resolution on the parallels arc the two had set up. Them coming together to ensure the future generation don’t repeat their mistakes.

Just played the demo for the first time, I really like the whole concept of the story! I think it's been the only story I've read about elemental users in a modern setting, so I can't help but find it refreshing (bonus points for having ATLA/TLOK as inspos, good taste indeed).
My thoughts, in no particular order: I want to give MC a warm hug, a fluffy blanket and a cup of hot chocolate (+ praying that the lightning deity that blessed MC will also smite the orphanage and Mother down in the future. Do it for the poor little meow meow, o great deity!), Mother sounds like one of the caretakers or the head of the orphanage, I love L and A to bits, after the new info about J (what with MC having trauma regarding earth weavers) I'm looking forward to their interactions w/ MC, I hope we see Professor Astor again...
Lore questions that popped in my head: Do people know how many elemental deities are? Since there's apparently a hierarchy in place... And the fact that lightning as an element is very rare for weavers makes me think that there're probably more deities for an element than others (either that or the deity is very stingy with their blessing lmao).
Romance-centered thoughts: I absolutely will romance all of the ROs, I can't resist their allure at all. I'm making three separate playthroughs as I speak 🏃♀️ (though I have to admit I'll romance A first. 'Cold and detached exterior with a warm and nice side underneath it all for those who break their walls' characters are my one-hit K.O. weakness fr 😔). It also makes me think... How would you rate the RO routes for slowburn and angst purposes? L and A seem to have some baggage concerning their families, J is a mystery for now, and MC can be the biggest touch-averse yet touch-starved person in the whole story. Also, the implications of some of the choices make me imagine that MC could potentially not see themselves as someone worth loving, you know. They're gonna be so confused and scared at the whole falling in love business that will ensue in the future 😭.
Ohhh I love asks like these. They make me re-think some of the decisions I’ve made while writing - in a good way of course!
I’ve always adored the world of ATLA/TLOK (though I admit I have not finished the original series yet, only Korra’s). The little fanfics I’ve written for it (for myself only) are my favorites
The amount of deities that exist are unknown, but there is more to be revealed about the existence of weavers like the MC in the future. Let’s just say that the realm of elemental deities have their own shit to take care of 👀
The relationship angst and pacing entirely depends on how MC interacts with them romantically. The variables for MC affection for RO, and RO affection for MC are separate. I’ll just let you imagine what that means 😏

Fanfic Discussion
So i'm writing this atla/tlok fic, and the human and spirit realm are slowly merging because of Vaatu. He knocked the realms off balance and now humans can enter the spirit realm again and spirits can enter the human realm again. How, exactly, he knocked the realms off-balance I haven't figured out yet. (This is 500/600 years in the future from tlok)
The avatar line is dead, there will no longer be any more avatars, and Raava has to fight Vaatu alone again. But, the harmonic convergence was also knocked off-balance, so it doesn't happen anymore. The portals are in the same place, however.
Benders can learn any amount of bending but with each new type learned, even a little, they go insane and feral. Benders who know all four types are just wild animals. They also start to look corrupted, like the spirits corrupted by Vaatu. The corruption increases with each type of bending. Even benders of one element have visible, albeit small, corruption.
Non-benders are rare, both because they don't entirely exist, anyone can learn bending, and because they're constantly being slaughtered. Being a non-bender is a matter of choice here.
The earth kingdom/republic was destroyed by quadrubenders (benders who know all elements)and the northern water tribe. Earth benders are still very much alive though, their homeland is just gone and abandoned.
Both the northern water tribes and southern water tribes military and capitals were destroyed. Ironically, by each other, but now they're in hiding. Hiding from quadrubenders specifically. They isolated themselves from everyone and returned to their primitive roots. They don't converse between tribes either, it's considered taboo.
The fire nation isn't evil evil again but their morals and ethics are questionable. They made it illegal to learn more than one type of bending and will kill anyone who has. They also don't trade, work, or talk with anyone who has learned more then one type of bending, even if said person had become a leader/president of someone they were allied. They cut all ties no matter how large and important they were. It's a part of why their economy is struggling.
The republic is still alive, somehow, and doing extremely well. It's the only place non-benders and benders live in peace. Even benders with more than one bending type live there. the chief of police is a non-bender, who is one of the main characters. Their equipment has been heavily modified and improved over the years to accommodate non-benders and benders with two or possibly three bending types. Very rarely do people with three types stay sane enough to work in the police force, however.
(Bonus because I really think this is funny: Vaatu has a spirit accomplice who may or may not want to be fucked by Vaatu)
(Bonus #2: The second mc is a criminal who the first mc let out just to help him "save the world", and he is very much not sane.)

i (re)devoured all official Avatar material in like 2 weeks (except the novels, I'm about to start those) but the rumors of Avatar Studios making a new series of the Earth Avatar has me buzzing with ideas about it :D
like imagine if Bolin after having 15613 different jobs ends up being a pro earthbender trainer in his old age and he's the buff old dude spinning random unbelievable tales about Avatar Korra that nobody really believes since a lot of time has passed and his gen is mostly gone. Bonus points is the new Avatar ends up stumbling into gym Bolin works at & gets an earful about their past life, except Bolin doesn't know who they are until later and ends up reenacting the fanboy moment he had when he first met Korra but with the new Avatar and ends up being their earthbending master. And old lady Jinora definitely needs to come back not just to teach airbending but tell all the wild stories she has b/c she has so many just from the ones with Korra, and her siblings dynamic in old age should appear I wanna see them grown up. And even tho widowed Asami sounds sad, I want Asami to outlive Korra so she can appear as another connection and maybe possibly interact with late spirit-Korra via the new Avatar's past lives omg we need a old lady couple reunion ahh T.T
I can totally relate, Anon. I've been binge-watching TLOK and scrolling through ATLA content recently, as well as reading some fics. I haven't been in a fandom before and only discovered AO3 in 2021. I know, it sounds so dumb of me, lol.
Yeah, I saw the character design for the new Earth Avatar, and he's bulky! He reminds me of Bolin and Iroh II. Oh, please, I love this idea—Bolin would definitely sound like Bumi. And he could be his master because I can't think of anyone in Korra's generation who could be a master, unless they introduce a new character.
I still can't move on from the idea that Korra is gone. In my head, she's still happily married to Asami and doing mundane things with their adoptive kid(s) (if they decide to adopt). Also, I'm curious about what Korra would look like when the new Avatar tries to reconnect with her. Hear me out; she's definitely going to be hot. Ugh, I need to draw this.

I’m just gonna plop the little coherence I have of bending-related strangeness (not quite body horror) here:
firebenders, given their emotions often fuel their bending, cry fire/embers on occasion, trigger the ozone-feel of lightning when intensely afraid, etc. this makes more sense in my head but the idea of bending sources being more. physically linked to the bender is. sooo. and earthbenders thrive from their connection to the earth so I propose: earthbenders are always a little bit filthy, there’s always a little dirt somewhere, because the lack of it is psychologically agonizing. earthbenders from the 100 yr war with scars filled in with tightly packed earth. save me earthbenders with scars filled in with tightly packed earth.* earthbenders learning to bend each other from scar-fillings like a funky little earthbender-specific modified bloodbending,,, waterbenders having literal water filling their lungs because they move with the tide, the tide moves with them, within them, a cohesive, cohabiting unit. airbenders who compact air with each breath to be lighter, more connected to every sound and smell and sight carried on the breeze but separated from it all the same.
*I also have mako+bolin thoughts about that. so remember how I was yapping abt how mako (and bolin, by extension, would be physically realllyy fucked up? mako’s not technically an earthbender, but,,, ek genes,, and the brothers having matching creepy ass scars that freak the krew out a little bit but none of them really talk abt it,,,
yeah so that’s my thoughts on that!!
however I’m not done with you yet. I have au thoughts (again, to whose surprise?) so I’m kind off mentally ill about parallels in atla/tlok, sooo,, azula and mako.

so azula is known for her insaneee poker face despite years of repressed trauma and childhood emotional abuse, right. well. guess who else doesn’t express emotions visibly and is cosplaying a normal person over years of fighting for his life. ding-ding-ding, you guessed it, mako!
so, so hear me out here. mako directly paralleling something azula said/did (“you can laugh. it’s funny,” for example) a couple times. but then. but then.
this is where the au part comes in. something happens. maybe kill bolin, idk. (JUST READ THAT BACK WHAT AM I ON 😭🙏🏼) but mako gets the breakdown experience,,,
maybe shove zuko’s oldass in there as a bonus. bring in katara. have a blast, do whatever. but like he has to be sedated cause he’s just. losing it man. like sobbing and screaming and everything cause he spent so long doing everything to make sure bolin was okay (she spent so long doing everything to make sure she didn’t become like zuko) but here it is, all crumbling before him (he shouldn’t have been able to run that fast, it all crumbled before her) and he is absolutely powerless (what lightning can she summon chained up to a gutter? there is only so far her roars will reach, and they know to get out of range.)
I’m in my teen angst era rn and mako will in fact be enjoying the brunt of it. thanks for listening to my little rants and rambles :))

okay but when you translate it over to characters who make my brain turn,,, how did you know that it would intensify my opinions on the subject by 100x fdhkjghbdfjkshbjgdf personally i like mako & bolin to be not only internally fucked up, but also externally fucked up too!
ALSO I LOVE AZULA & MAKO PARALLELS. they are the two lightningbenders who looked at the concept of "lightning requires absence of emotion and peace of mind" and went yup, i'm going to dissociate the fuck out of life's collective traumas and use that to zap some shit up. there's this one edit somewhere out there on mako & azula doing the same feats in their respective shows which, if i were the type to engage in discourse, i would whip out to showcase that mako is not an incompetent firebender lol. but really — they're both firebender prodigies who were exploited and used by their respective mentors/figures of greater power. they both put on masks of feigned indifference because it's the sort of shit that enabled them to survive all these years in their vastly different but similarly dangerous environments. they're the pragmatists in comparison to their brothers and they do what it takes to reach where they must, with a learned apathy for those who get knocked down in the process.
so yeah! azula/mako parallels actually give me life, as do mako/katara parallels. (adding to the reasons as to why mako would've made a better girl, but i digress.)
ALSO mako paralleling shit azula said is actually so funny what i might have to casually incorporate that into the avatar!mako au sob dfjshkghjfdshjhhh
also jfc mako's breakdown would be brutal. that is not pretty shit. that would not be pretty. in fact it's so un-pretty that i think i'm going to write it (granted, maybe to a less explicit degree and without the whole dead bolin thing because it's canon compliant, but you bet your ass that rose beds & gasoline veins is going to delve into that deconstruction of everything mako's spent his entire life perceiving to be the point of his existence). anyway i love this au conceptually and you are so big brain for thinking it up. love your casual writing style too :)

What to expect from crestofshame in 2023?— January Fic Updates
Hello All :) ! I just wanted to start by thanking everyone for all of the likes, kudos, reblogs, and comments on my art and writing this year. I love being able to have a little community that gets to enjoy my interpretations and doodles.
Next, I want to explain my new Fic posting schedule: I used to update SOMETHING on AO3 between two to four times a month. Now, I’m going to be switching to updating any ongoing long fics once a month, with any additional updates that month being bonus chapters or other oneshots. Currently: Than Your Fragile Heart is getting the most of my attention. Months that have Major US holidays will likely interfere (hence no updates last month).
Another thing that changes the monthly update pattern is fandom events that I participate in such as zines, challenges, gift exchanges, or dedication weeks. I am not currently participating in any events formerly listed, but I have set a challenge for myself to produce two complex pieces for Femslash February. One of which is of course, an edeleth piece, and the other being a 2-3 strip mini comic for TLOK. Because most of my free time will be spent planning and drawing these, the January and February updates will be at a minimum.
Do not worry, though, chapter 8 of TYFH will be coming this month!
Also, I’m probably also going to start experimenting with writing in other fandoms once I finish TYFH. I’ll probably also do another edeleth AU 3-5shot that I’ve been mapping, but I’m probably going to try and do all of the chapters at once and post them as daily updates for a week to make it a cool little event.
I’m going to add a new tag at the end of these update posts to help organize them, and will probably do an art tag sometime soon too.
