if you could omit a storyline from the tvd show. which one would it be and why???

okay to complete this ask, i had to recall the main storylines from each season. this is what i produced. i will stick that below along with my decisions and thought processes.

also, i say it in the notes, but if this form of answering asks is too chaotic, i can switch back to the neat paragraph format i used in the avengers x kai post. i can cut out my gibberish and actually capitalize my sentences again 😅 just let me know which you prefer!

no tw except for spoilers all the way to season 8

the seasons & their storylines

1 - damon + kath / tomb

2 - stefan being a dick (+ wolves)

3 - mikaelsons

4 - shane + cure

5 - silas + travelers

6 - kai + geminis

7 - heretics + rayna cruz

8 - fucking sirens + stupid donovan family reunion

now... to judge them all and remove one...

alright… tbh, it took me way too long to remember the second villian of s7, because post-lily, my mind went blank

then it went, ah, yes, that stupid hunter storyline

and then i immediately selected that one bc i hated watching bonnie get abused again

this storyline was so stupid; the seven year time jump was so confusing

we were also given NO CONTEXT and MINOR HISTORY into bonnie and enzo's THREE YEAR RELATIONSHIP

like i love both these characters, but them together came out of nowhere

also… damon caring so little for enzo and vice versa in seasons 7 & 8 after all the history they had together PISSED ME OFF SO BAD, like they don't care for each other at all?? not even romantically, just platonic care / trauma bond, NOTHING?

anyway that's aside the point

i loved early season 7

nora, val, and mary louise were funny; matt being angry all the time was funny; bonnie and damon coming back from europe and immediately killing a heretic was funny

bonnie had so much sass in this season

but then plec had to drive her underground again with the magic pills & nearly killing her & all that shit

and i liked rayna, to some extent; she was pretty cool

but there was no reason to drag bonnie in the mix and make her kill her friends just because she took some stupid pills, just because some relative of enzo wanted her to open a vault

that st. john stuff was insanity; i still don't understand it

i don't think the characters did either; probably not the actors, either

i also don't like that the rayna storyline killed off nora and ML, like, let the lesbian heretics live, fuck off julie plec

and bonnie and nora should've had a fling but that's a different story

so yeah… the 7 years into the future storyline + hunters is the storyline i would erase

also… i don't know why caroline kept showing up with blood on her face and ranting about stefan, like, i was genuinely confused

it kept reminding me of season 2 when damon dated that newscaster but then stefan killed her.. or whatever happened...

anyway, let's take a look at a close contender… season 8 - donovans

why… the fuck… did the donovans have to have a family reunion?

i do not care about his dad, i do not care about his mom, i do not care about vicki, i don't care about matt, and i certainly don't care to see them all in one place

matt only survived bc zach and julie plec were hooking up i stg

this man and his whole family are weak links

the sirens didn't bother me all that much, compared to the donovans fucking existence

i actually liked seline, ish

[unless i just liked the actress bc she's in that containment series so i associate her with chris 💀]

but i liked that she was playing games with alaric

i think she and kai would get along well… fucking with alaric, nearly killing twins… plus his comment about wanting to fuck hot cannibals…

this post isn't about kai moving on

the sirens were hella annoying at first and i hated them, but as soon as they released damon & enzo, i started to like them

then they died

speaking of death, stefan's death was so stupid

i have a lot to say about that but that's for a different time

kelly ruining steroline wedding was so stupid

what tf was happening bc i genuinely don't know

i have no idea what happened when tyler was possessed

i don't even know what to say bc i was so lost the entire time

but i wouldn't omit the storyline bc the spell that eradicated them is what kai sucked up later

and then he became all hot & dangerous

but where did they go after the spell kept them out??

where did they come from, where did they go??

i liked liv & luke, they were both grumpy & slightly dickish

the travelers shit introduced them so that's cool... bc they had to stop the dopplegangers or something, i have no idea

liv has a vendetta against life for no reason. she's just so angry

she doesn't even remember the Great Sibling Slaughter of 1994, she was 4. why are you so bitter, liv?

we'll never know ig

idk tho living with joshua parker post-1994 doesn't seem fun. doesn't seem fun pre-1994, but i feel he'd be even 10x angrier after, so maybe it's just the childhood trauma. sorry, liv

also i might've shipped her with bonnie just a little bit… just a smidge… thought bon would be real cute with another witch

stefan's dopplegangers were great… i like both of them more than i like stefan

but the kill the dopplegangers thing was confusing and if not for early s5 with silas & quetsiyah + blonde twins in later parts, i would hate s5

other seasons' notes

season 4... i hated shane bc he was creepy, but i found it funny that bonnie was so into him. damon was so perturbed at this

oH! not a storyline, but omit them killing kol bc fuck elena. that's my other man

but i know why they did it

and i adored davina bringing him back

so ig not omit, but fuck them for killing him, especially for their own personal gain

kol died so that jeremy could dramatically yell while ripping off his shirt

season 2... so i just remembered that s2 was more than just a precursor to klaus / middle part elijah; it also had wolves

i forgot about them initially, bc i don't care about most the wolves

tyler, i have so many mixed emotions; hayley, hated in tvd, liked in s1-2 of the orginals, didn't care for her later on; mason, nice to look at, don't care about him; jewel, or jade, idk, blonde girl that was looking for mason and found tyler, hated her; the random apperance of stephen amell… gtfo off my screen

wouldn't omit the wolves bc they had a point (ish) and grew the show, but i just don't care

not to say i don't like werewolves bc i fucking love the werewolves (cough twilight cough) but i don't care for the tvd wolves - the originals included, fuck off jackson

that was mean… he was a good man, good husband… i just don't care, i'm sorry

oliver was way worse, let's focus on him instead. he can fuck off; jackson can stay

so yeah, the hunter curse thing in s7 needs to go

unless you're kai and there's sexual tension involved & you're mutually causing each other pain, don't hurt bonnie

the magic pills were confusing, don't hurt my lesbian heretics, either

st. john stuff made no sense; probably just an introduction to the armory so alaric could feel important again

one final note

i hate that the beautiful salvatore mansion was turned into a school for weasel-y children to destroy

children are messy, that thing's an antique

i hate alaric

oh, i know i also made a post about wishing kai didn't kill jo so that alaric wouldn't have feelings for caroline, but i don't know if i fully stand by that post

as much as i wanted kai to have a redemption arc, him being a heretic was fun (while it lasted)

if they were dedicated towards keeping kai alive (therefore omiting his death storyline), he'd be a great time

i can see him and damon becoming buddies & being absolute menaces together

damon fights it sooo hard at first, but can't help wanting to dive into kai's bad influence

he makes vampirism feel like vampirism again… raising hell and not being afraid to be the bad guy

while simultaneously getting bad looks from all his friends and promising he's trying to be kai's good influence, but we all know he's not trying that hard

jo would survive and raise her twins with her creepy husband

she'd live in fear of kai coming after her kids any given day, but would try to ignore the thought

maybe they move away & free us from ric for good

but while this sounds really fun, i don't know where the story would go from there

kai would definitely get stuck under lily's control with the rest of the heretics & he'd have a big fucking fit about it

if enzo got with bonnie with kai still alive, that would be ugly

he would totally fuck a siren… and then help them kill the twins

but…

him killing jo & raising absolute hell was very fun & i loved it

his sudden return in s8, effectively pissing off damon & ric was hilarious

loved that he got back & immediately killed a grill employee

just like old times

i really wished they didn't kill him off, but i did like his pop-up later on

so… the storyline I would omit:

What do you think about Bonnie x professor Shane? I am just curious if you ever ship these two

i didn't because it was very poorly done. i talk about it in this ask too, but shane, like most of the men on the show, was framed as being interested in bonnie's power in this really abstract, impersonal way, wanting only to use her as a prop. i wouldn't have minded his nefarious agenda, but there was no interesting spark between them because the show didn't allow for that. i remember that halloween episode where bonnie had that cute corset on and they were supposed to be flirting but it was so weak and transparent, because we could all see the bait and switch. (i also personally think they had little chemistry, but that's mostly the writing and framing)

Nancy Drew - Bess and Odette. She barely knew the lady! Give my queen some recovery period from her *ehm* HUNDRED YEARS OF TRAUMA before wanting to jump the bones of the body she's possessing RNM - It's weird, but Max and Anatsa. I could never picture them, even as a fling. TVD - Jeremy and Bonnie. when they were together, it was actually an illegal ship y'all. Jeremy was 16, and Bonnie was 18-19. I really wished they'd just bonded as a human connection to Elena and not... yk, ghost-shagged each other Gilmore Girls - LANE AND ZACH. where did they even come from? out of thin air that's where. Lane deserved her happy ending with Dave Rygalski and I will die on this hill. Teen Wolf - (brace yourself) Lydia and Parrish. Malia and Parrish. Melissa and Argent. wtf? at this point I'm pretty sure Jeff Davis just played chits and picked his ships randomly. All of Parrish's ships are ew (that's just his luck unfortunately) and Melissa with Peter would have been the best choice are you kidding me? ARGENT AND MELISSA'S KIDS WERE TOGETHER, and not even fwb-together. like SOULMATE together! Grey's Anatomy - Addison and Alex. They couldn't cash in major potential there. She was the right amount of bitchy to get him off his macho ass. Not everyone has to sleep with everyone Miss Shonda! Also, Teddy and Owen. They're best as friends, because (i hate to admit this) Teddy was right in s18 (was it 19, i think it was 19?) when she told Link to stay away from Jo because marrying best friends and then hating them in marriage is sad.

10. Most disliked arc? Why?

RNM - Again, the Max-Anatsa storyline. It's like, again, they played chits with who she should be with. My Max is not the one-night stand kinda guy (which I'm proud of, representation of my soul) and him sleeping with Anatsa and then just dropping her is WACKY. Isobel and Anatsa were so much better, and had good development Nancy Drew - Park's arc. The writers had the potential in their very hands and chucked it themselves. Park as the ISM/FHK would have made so much sense, it would have been the best direction for his appearance. TVD - The entire Alaric x Caroline thing. HATED THAT. HATED THAT the way Ashley Ippolito hates Nate Jacobs. He's like 15 years older than her and IS HER BEST FRIEND'S STEPDAD. And the Alaric and Stefan pissing contest for Caroline. Dear writers you didn't give Caroline Forbes the Elle Woods arc she deserved to put her in this dump of a situation! Gilmore Girls - Married Dean cheating thing. "He's MY Dean" Rory honey go touch some grass and juggle some balls. He's fucking married and as your mother once said "Solidarity Sister". Lindsey wasn't all that bad, and she definitely deserved better than being cheated on at the age of 19. Teen Wolf - Argent and Melissa. Explained above. Notice how in the movie, Argent and Melissa didn't really have any romantic/close scene without a third wheel (thank God)? It's like Jeff Davis finally realized that oh shit, aren't their respective kids the main reason this all started? Grey's Anatomy - Jackson and Maggie. Just— NO.

23. Unpopular character you love?

Nancy Drew - everyone loves everyone in this one. so I can't really say anything divergent RNM - i think we love everyone right? TVD - VIncent Griffith (does he count? idk but I love his humor and badassery). Oh, and also Valerie Tulle. She was sweet while she lasted wasn't she? I honestly saw more in Stellerie than in Steroline (why you booing me when I'm right!) Gilmore Girls - Lindsey. Just because her taste in music is different from Rory and Jess's, doesn't mean she's not a good human. She tried so much to keep her marriage afloat, and I've never seen her be rude like Rory to Shane. Grey's Anatomy - Sam Bello (basically foetus Liz Ortecho) because she's the sweetest most bubbly thing after firecrackers in honey.

The Black Tapes Podcast AU

It starts off simple enough. After the wild success of their first podcast series, journalist Bonnie Bennett approaches her producer with the idea of creating a new series around interesting people with interesting lives. After recording material for the first episode about paranormal investigators, Bonnie meets Dr. Atticus Shane, a controversial and famous figure in the paranormal investigative community.

Dr. Shane is a man a contradiction and mystery- a rational skeptic heavily involved in supernatural investigation, a widower with a past that left him the prime suspect in his wife’s mysterious disappearance, and a professor with an office of bookshelves crammed full of white VHS tapes of debunked paranormal cases - it’s little wonder how Bonnie’s series shifts focus to the professor and his cryptic investigations.

With his foundation, The Shane Institute, offering a reward of one million dollars to anyone who can prove with undeniable scientific evidence the existence of the arcane, Dr. Shane has made quite a name for himself. Still, there are several unsolved cases, documented on black tapes lining a single shelf amongst his sea of pristinely solved cases. Soon Bonnie takes an interest in documenting Dr. Shane and helping him investigate these unsolved mysteries. But then their inquiries take them down a dark path of shadowy figures, missing children, and demonic entities, leaving Bonnie in over her head and questioning just what she believes.

When the podcast leads a listener who works at a psychiatric hospital to call in for help, Bonnie and Shane meet a young, violent patient with an obsession for numbers and frightening - possibly psychic - abilities. Having been hospitalized from a young age for the baffling murder of his parents and siblings, Malachai “Kai” Parker is as intriguing of a documentary subject to Bonnie as Dr. Shane is. It’s nearly impossible to tell if Kai may be the key to solving the mysteries of the black tapes or if he is simply nothing more than an extremely disturbed man, drawing Bonnie - and her listeners - deeper into this macabre web in search of the truth.

In the end, the truth just may all be a matter of perspective. So ask yourself - do you believe?

Horror AU based on the podcast series “The Black Tapes” by Pacific Northwest Stories starring Alex Reagan, whom Bonnie’s character is based on. Atticus Shane is based on Dr. Richard Strand (who has a nice voice) and Kai is based on Simon Reese, who seemed like a perfect stand-in for him. Of course, I have an idea on just how this AU would deviate from the podcast story. But this bitch already has too many WIPS to juggle, so you guys get an aesthetic AU instead.

You followed Elena, moving between other teenagers lingering at their lockers. Enrolling at a high school was the last thing you really wanted, but considering that you had been so young when you turned, the hardest part was compelling the principal into accepting clearly forged documents.

Elena stopped at her locker as you caught up with her, meeting Caroline and a girl you hadn’t seen yet, who eyed you curiously as you joined them. “Hey, guys,” Elena said, opening her locker.

“Hey,” Caroline smiled brightly, seemingly chipper. “Hey, Y/N. What are you doing here?”

“Honestly,” you said, adjusting the backpack over your shoulder. “Watching out for Jeremy, keeping myself busy. And Stefan asked me to keep close to Elena, just in case.”

“Ah, there it is.” Caroline shut her own locker, putting a laptop into her bag. You turned toward the other girl, raising a hand in greeting. “Oh, sorry, yeah, this is Bonnie.”

“Hi,” Bonnie said. “You’re the one Elena moved in with, right?”

“That would be me.”

“You alright, Elena?”

Elena was looking in the mirror in her locker, adjusting her hair. “I’m more worried about Jeremy. Matt is staying with him, but, you know.”

“Good thing you had another place to go, I guess,” Bonnie shifted her weight from one foot to the other. She was suspicious of you, which didn’t surprise you in the least, and you did your best to push down the strange feeling you got from looking her in the eye.

“A very good thing. Y/N’s apartment is super cool- there’s a loft and everything,” Elena shut the locker door, turning back toward you. “Hey, we should hang out tonight. I’m in desperate need of some girl talk after yesterday. If-” the looked at you, tilting her head as though asking permission- “That’s okay with you?”

“Yeah, that sounds great. My place is a little small, but I have booze.”

“I'm in. Shane taught me some small spells I've been wanting to try.”

Ah. A witch, then.

“Oh, creepy professor guy is just Shane now.” Caroline rolled her eyes.

“Sorry, who?”

“He’s not creepy.” Bonnie elbowed Caroline in the side. “We can talk about it tonight. Please tell me you have mixers.”

“Strawberry, cherry, watermelon- and plenty of tequila.”

Caroline threw her head back. “Oh, there is a God.”

“She’s been helping Klaus,” Stefan slammed his hands down on the table, shaking it. “And you still let Elena go with her?”

“You’ve been helping Klaus,” Damon pointed out. “And I trust her more than Jeremy right now.”

“Do you have any idea what she could be planning?”

“I don’t know, world domination?”

“Damon,” Stefan bit his tongue, the urge to hit his brother fierce. “This is serious.”

“I am serious,” Damon said, resting his hands on his hips. “Elena is safer with Y/N-”

“Listen, Damon, I know she’s the ‘love of your life-’”

“Afterlife,” Damon mumbled, moving toward the sofa. Stefan followed, not content to let the conversation drop. “Which, by the way, that wasn’t the case, okay? We met, we hooked up, that’s all it was. That has nothing to do with it-”

“Yes, it does, because you think she’s still the sweet-”

“Hey.” His tone was sharp, and he was in front of Stefan in the blink of an eye. “I’ll watch her, okay? I’m not gonna let Y/N do something stupid. Let’s not forget you let Jeremy invite her into their house yesterday.”

“Fine, but if something happens, you’re responsible for her. If she hurts Elena, you answer to that.”

Damon eased himself down onto the sofa, and Stefan sat opposite him, his head in his hands. “I won’t let that happen.”

You were shitfaced.

It had taken an entire bottle of tequila to get there, but it happened- rather quickly, even with the mixers Bonnie had pulled down from your shelf. She was also rather blitzed, dancing with Caroline (also trashed) on the loft, the two of them with their drinks raised high overhead.

You were on the couch, standing, not sitting, with a now empty bottle in your hand. Elena was sprawled on the chair, the one by the window, her feet propped up on the desk, leaning as far back as she could, sweeping her hair on the floor.

“Bonnie,” she was saying, voice drowned by the music pumping through your speakers. “This stuff is amazing.”

“Too bad we’re out of te-kill-ya,” Caroline shouted down the ladder, clinging onto the railing on either side of it. “We haven’t even had our ‘girl talk’ yet!”

You jumped from the couch, downstairs neighbors be damned, dropping the empty bottle into the trash. “We should go to the Boarding House.”

The girls all looked at you, eyes wide. Elena sat up. “You wanna go to Damon’s house?”

“I don’t think they’re home, are they?”

Elena pulled out her phone. "Out with Damon for the night, don't wait up. Brother bonding."

“Let’s go,” you grabbed up your jacket. “Pretty sure we can dig out Damon’s Dam.”

“That sounds kinky,” Bonnie slid down the ladder, landing wobbly on her feet. “I’m in.”

“Fantastic,” Caroline said, climbing down after her. “How are we getting there? I cannot run in a straight line.”

“I got it,” you said, swiping up the keys to your stolen car. The girls grabbed up their things, following you outside. The radio blasted the entire drive there, the windows down and the girls screaming at the top of their lungs, though the drive was fast. You pulled up outside the house, blinking at it through the darkness. The four of you moved toward the house and you paused, realizing you had not been inside before.

“You okay?” Elena checked you in the shoulder, jamming the key into the lock.

“Yeah, it’s just-” you pause as the door opens, the three of them moving inside. “I haven’t been here before.”

“Oh,” Caroline paused, considering. “I- don’t think it applies anymore. Since the last human who owned the house…”

“Was me,” Elena said.

You started toward the door, pausing just behind the threshold. Carefully, you held up a hand, reaching forward.

And passed through.

You stepped through the door, taking in the large foyer. The girls had already moved past it, into the library. Elena was digging through the shelves of the bar in the library. You passed by her, heading for the stairs.

“Where are you going?”

“Damon’s room,” you said, not stopping as your hand trailed over the railing. “He always hides the good shit.”

“Someone’s being a snoopy sally,” Caroline called up the stairs.

You ignored her, looking through doorways as you searched for Damon’s room. You found it quickly, spotting a pile of his clothes haphazardly tossed by the door. It was huge, his bed turned so the headboard was in a corner, the dresser opposite that. You started there, first, digging through the top drawer, finding the usual stuff: boxers, socks- toys.

You rolled your eyes, shutting the drawer as you moved onto the next.

The floor creaked behind you, but you paid no mind as Caroline, Bonnie, and Elena moved inside.

“Wow,” Elena said, running her hand through a layer of dust on a bookshelf. “This is not what I expected.”

“The sex stuff is in the top drawer,” you said, digging through an assortment of shirts. Elena pulled a face, but didn’t comment. “How many plain black tees can one dude own?”

“Caroline was in here before,” Bonnie teased, leaning to peer under the bed.

Your brows rose. Caroline’s face flushed red. “I didn't know what a sociopathic narcissist he was.”

The drawer you’d been rummaging in shut a little too hard. “He wasn’t always like that.”

“But you hate him,” Elena said. “Right? I mean, trust me, we all pretty much think he’s the worst.”

“Oh, shit,” Caroline interrupted before you could answer. She stood in front of the desk, the drawer pulled open in front of her. She reached inside, pulling out a stack of old, yellowed papers, folded neatly together. She unfolded the top one, frowning as her eyes scanned the page.

“And I’m the snoopy sally,” you snorted, shoving the drawer closed and pulling open the next.

“There’s a stereo downstairs, right?” Bonnie held up a handful of cassettes. “With, like, bluetooth?”

“Hey, guys,” Caroline turned toward the room, still holding the letter. “Listen to this.”

“Found it,” you said, pulling the bottle from Damon’s drawer.

“What’s it say?” Elena stood over her shoulder, peering down at the page.

“Dearest Damon,” Caroline started, clearing her throat.

You stopped, clutching the bottle in your hand as Bonnie sat down the cassette tapes. “I don’t think we should-“

“The world is dark here. Even in the company of my darling Christopher, I cannot help but feel the shadows that surround me in my own home. I am, some days, a prisoner, or a fluttering bird that cannot be freed from a wrought iron cage. Though I am reminded by your letters that there is light to be found, I fear I will not see it again, as you are so far away-“

“Guys,” you plucked the letter from Caroline’s hand, despite her protests. “I know we’re pretty much all anti-Damon, but this-“

“It’s from you, isn’t it?”

Elena was looking right at you- through you- as you carefully traced the signature at the bottom of the page. You knew what the letter said. What it confessed. It was your handwriting, your words, and you were doomed to remember them for so long as you lived. Folding the page, carefully, you tucked it and the others back in the drawer.

The buzz in your mind had simmered to a low hum, and your body was heavy.

“Yeah.”

“Y/N,” Caroline carefully closed the drawer, her expression and voice soft. “Who’s Christopher?”

You stared hard at the bottle in your hands, the amber of the liquid catching the sunlight in the window like stained glass. It refracted onto the floor, waves of yellow light separating you from Caroline, Elena, and Bonnie.

“My husband.”

It's always so interesting to see people say they feel they can't be butch because they're X but X thing has been a defining aspect of butchness either in my own growing up or in butch culture in general. It feels like a recent internet invention that butches aren't massive softies or you have to be skinny to be butch? I'm sure it's area/community dependant but it makes zero sense to me and I think I will blame Shane from the L word for this.

All the older butches I've known and admired have been fat and deeply emotional people, to the point that's a defining trait of butchness to me as well as a common these in butch literature and historical photographs. A defining, if somewhat dubiously healthy, aspect of femme culture and history has been femmes as emotional rocks and protectors for butches who were regularly having the life beaten out of them physically and emotionally. Femmes are protectors just as much as butches in their own way, we share the burden. Just a sec I'm gonna send you a poem if I can fuckin find it

Every time I hear someone say they feel less butch because their feelings are strong and easily accessed it hurts my heart and I can't help but think of Ivan Coyote performing the Femme piece and choking up at "I want you to know that it's not always easy to love me". We go through a lot, I think we're allowed to have a bit of a cry sometimes: even when it hardens us we remain soft, just a bit more like a sea urchin or perhaps a pinchful crab. Signed, a tough looking butch who cried and cried today after listening to Will I? From rent for the thousandth time after getting bad health news. Fuck it. If Butch Tears is good enough for LA/ATX Pocket Expo: The New Rules of Flagging 1. It's good enough for us and 2. They should sell it so we can be aesthetic as we sob please.

you're so right, i absolutely agree -- all the butches i looked up to (who were, unfortunately, historical butches, as i didn't know any older butches in real life in my childhood, there weren't any in my area) were fat butches. that body standard definitely seems to me like a new pressure, an invention of the tumblr (and now tiktok) skinny-white-androgynous-gnc-nonbinary industrial complex/standard.

emotions on the other hand, i think have always been a sort of sore subject for butches, at least from what i've read. barringer says it here too -- "it's mostly done/Alone." i think a lot of butches, modern and otherwise, feel the need to bottle up, compartmentalize, pack away their emotions in an attempt to fill that protector role, so nobody but them has to deal with all of it. it's not healthy, and i think a lot of butches spend a lot of time unlearning that urge, because not for nothing i think a lot of everybody spend a lot of time unlearning the urge to hide their emotions, to make them more palatable to other people.

it takes a very brave person to do what coyote did and hop on a stage and be vulnerable; it takes courage to let other people see that you're soft inside, and hurting, in daily life or otherwise. i think it takes a lot of work to be comfortable with and confident about that. but like i said in that other post, i think learning how to do that in healthy ways, how to share and let people in, can also function in the protector role in a similar sense to what you're talking about with femmes: making it safe for the people around you to open up as well, by extension of yourself being open about your feelings. that's very deeply butch to me.

i think your point about "hardening" is really good, too. you're right, even when butches harden up they're still soft in the center... hardening's just a way to keep the outside from poking in, not a way to cleanse yourself of your emotionalism. the visual of a sea urchin feels very apt.

i'm sorry about whatever news you received -- health is always such a stressful thing. i'm glad you found a way to get it out of you. you're right, sometimes (most of the time in my experience lol) you really do just need a good cry. that's healing
