Queerness in Indian Media
↳Film: DIDI TERA DEVAR DEEWANA from HUM AAPKE HAIN KOUN (1994, Hindi), dir. SOORAJ BARJATYA
Sooraj Barjatya films are known for their (often unintentionally comedic) portrayals of traditional family values, which is why it was so surprising that a song like Didi Tera Devar Deewana somehow made it into what was, at the time, the biggest Indian blockbuster. The character Rita (Sahila Chaddha), who has no prominent role in the film otherwise, crossdresses to role-play as Prem (Salman Khan). She teases the women, romances Nisha (Madhuri Dixit) and conducts herself with a confident masculinity that was, and still is, virtually unheard of in mainstream Indian cinema across all languages.
Commentary on this song by Professor Gayatri Gopinath, from her book Impossible Desires: Queer Diasporas and South Asian Public Cultures, was posted by Desbian Herstory here.
This song was only the beginning of Madhuri Dixit's involvement in queer media, as she would go on to feature in multiple gay and gay-coded media, both as a supportive character and as the gay character herself. She has also been supportive in real life of the LGBTQ community.

Queerness in Indian Media
↳Film: DEDH ISHQIYA (2014, Hindi) dir. ABHISHEK CHAUBEY
Dedh Ishqiya is a dark comedy which follows two criminals, Khalu (Naseeruddin Shah) and Babban (Arshad Warsi), who decide to con a widowed noblewoman, Begum Para (Madhuri Dixit). Unbeknownst to them, Begum Para has got a plan of her own: find a rich suitor, swindle him out of his money, then run away with her maid, Muneera (Huma Qureshi), with whom she is in love. The womens' plan takes several alarming turns, but ultimately Begum Para and Muneera are able to trick Khalu and Babban, elope together, and live happily ever after.
The lesbian relationship is loosely based off of Ismat Chughtai's 1942 short story Lihaaf, which was an extremely controversial story in British colonial India for its allusions to sexuality and lesbianism, and which resulted in the author being called for an obscenity trial. The short story includes abusive and pedophilic elements which Dedh Ishqiya does away with; instead, Begum Para and Muneera's relationship is one of mutual love between adults.
Abhishek Chaubey discusses his films, including how he came to include the "lesbian strain" in Dedh Ishqiya and how "learned friends" helped him with coding the relationship, here
The actress Madhuri Dixit has been in multiple gay and gay-coded media, both as a supportive character and as the gay character herself. She has also been supportive in real life of the LGBTQ community.

Probably watched one of the most badass tv shows in the history of Hindi cinema. It’s called “Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo” which roughly translates to “Mother-in-law, Daughters-in-law and Flamingo.” It’s about Savitri, who is a Gypsie and the matriarch of a massive cartel in the lawless borderlands of Rajasthan. Her daughter is the main chemist while her two “bahus” (daughters-in-law) handle the finances and the operations of cartel. She opens up a battle for succession to find her heir in a murky world of drugs and violence.
Would 10/10 recommend.

There are fantastical stories with actual transgender characters, some for whom that is central and others for whom that isn't. And there are stories without transgender characters, but with metaphors and symbolism in their place, genuine expressions of self through such speculative fiction tropes as shapeshifting and programming. https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/667587?ref=Solitarymaninblack
