shout-out to people who fit the demonised DID stereotypes seen in movies & other media:
if you have violent &/or aggressive alters, i love you.
if you have complete blackout amnesia between alters, i love you.
if you have little to no communication between alters, i love you.
if your switches are overt & "distressing to witness", i love you.
if you've ever been called "scary", a "freak", or even "evil" for how your DID presents, i love you so much.
your experiences are real. you do not have to sugar-coat your disorder to make it more palatable for others. your brain helped you survive as best it could, so i hope you will find peace & healing when the worst is over. 🤍

btw. use whatever terminology benefits you.
if they're your alters, beautiful. if they're your parts, fantastic. if they're your headmates, wonderful. if they're your fellow system members, awesome. if they're just YOU, delightful. as long as you're comfortable, it doesn't matter how you conceptualise or label your self-states!
if you are a system, perfect. if you are a person with a CDD, perfect. it's all perfect because you deserve the autonomy to choose how to define yourself & you have made your choice! or chosen not to care about terminology! & that's rad!

finding evidence of your alters is a little funny sometimes-
our common experiences:
why is this hyperlink already purple?
why did this movie autoplay at halfway through?
who drew this?
whose ugly ass handwriting is this?
i swear i've never 100%-ed this game, but it says i did-
why is my bookmark 40 pages ahead?
how did my nails get painted?
feel free to add on! ^^"

"you don't have DID; DID is a super rare disorder that only affects 1%* of the population."
other things that affect ~1% of the population, but aren't considered "super rare":
autism
being ginger
being intersex
being transgender
being ambidextrous
OCD
heterochromia
being asexual
things that are RARER than DID:
schizophrenia
total blindness
having vitiligo
and, yet, these experiences are seldom seen as impossibly rare. before jumping to conclusions that someone with DID must be faking, consider this: 1% of 8 billion is 80 000 000. DID is not even the only complex dissociative disorder!
sources below the cut.
*sources tend to pinpoint the rate of DID as between 0.5-1.5-2.5%, so i'll just throw in three different sources.

cheers to protector alters who are tired of constantly having to shelter their system from harm. cheers to caretakers who need a break & need someone to take care of them. cheers to child alters who feel stuck, who wish they could grow up, or who refuse to be infantilised. cheers to hosts who just can't deal with fronting so often & sometimes want to disappear. cheers to gatekeepers who are overwhelmed by their responsibilities. cheers to trauma holders who wish they didn't have live with the consequences of what happened to them. cheers to persecutors who don't want to harm others, but who don't know how else to protect themselves & their system.
whatever your role is - if you have a role - don't be hard on yourself for struggling. you don't have to fit into a perfect box to use a label. you don't have to be fully functional & stable at all times! it's fucking hard! take care.

it's quite frustrating when you work up the courage to tell someone you have DID, but they hit you with "well, *i've* never noticed you switch" or "to me you're always the same person".
i think those statements are so misinformed to how DID (most often) presents. there are some things to note when observing DID from the outside:
not all cases of DID are overt. overt refers to your symptoms, switches & differences between alters being obvious to people from the outside. overt DID is less common than its counterpart *covert* (more secretive) DID. in covert DID, symptoms may be less noticeable from the outside, & that may lead to difficulty being diagnosed.
masking. masking is the ability some people possess to pretend to be someone/something that they are not. in DID, alters who are not the host part may mask as the host part to feel safe, undetectable, or simply out of instinct. before discovery of the system, this may be a subconscious effort; after discovery of the system, this may be purposeful in order to hide alter differences from others, for any reason.
complexity of identity. let us imagine that the host in a system is an ambivert - not quite introverted, & not quite extroverted. this host switches out, in front of their friend group, & a social part or other extroverted & friendly alter takes their place. their friends assume that they are just in a "friendlier mood", while in reality this person has switched. meanwhile this alter has a completely different set of interests, identity, & such, but since it is not brought up in conversation, the friend group does not suspect their friend has switched between separated self-states. identity is complex, & alters are (often, not always) able to feel & express a large range of emotions, depending in their mood. this can make it harder to tell the difference between an alter being in a strange mood, & a whole new part fronting!
so, next time you meet someone with DID, believe them. not all of our experiences are visible! edit: "DID" here can also be replaced with OSDD1, P-DID or UDD, but i just used DID because that's my specific experience.

something i've seen online as a reason to "fake-claim" pwCDDs, is that fact that sometimes a newly split alter already has some sort of knowledge right after forming. let's talk about it!
by this, i mean a few things. alters that split & immediately know how to blend in or mask as the host, alters who split & know who to go to for help, or alters who split & seem to already have the memories that other alters have. these situations have been used by some as "evidence" that someone with a CDD is faking. i think that is utter nonsense!
METHODS OF ALTER FORMATION
let's address this first. off the top of my head, i can think of three main ways a "new alter" can form.
popping into existence out of seemingly nowhere.
splitting *off* of another alter - mitosis style.
being the result of two alters fusing together.
these are three ways in which a "new alter" can be produced by your brain. in number 2, the subsequent split may or may not hold the memories the first alter had! there is a very real possibility that this new alter will have at least some memories, as they split from an existing alter. in number 3, the subsequent fusion can be considered a "new alter", despite likely containing the memories of both the alters that fused to form them. now, we have already covered two ways in which "new alters" would be able have memories, knowledge, & even life experiences despite recently forming.
GAINING KNOWLEDGE AS A NEW ALTER
in some systems, splitting a new, clueless alter can be an immense safety concern. for this reason - if we refer back to the previously mentioned method of splitting number 1 - alters may split with enough knowledge to be able to blend in. these may also be instincts, rather than explicit knowledge. they may have instincts to act confident in their abilities, to appear calm, or instincts to ask a specific person for help.
another thing to consider is co-consciousness. in the event that a new alter has split with absolutely zero instincts, prior knowledge, etc, but they appear from the outside to know exactly what to do, there is a chance that there may be a more experienced alter co-fronting or co-conscious with them. in my system, we are often 3-8 parts in front at the same time. if a new alter splits, odds are someone will be able to help them. this is not always the case, but it should be considered before you judge someone so harshly.
DIFFERENCES IN SYSTEM FUNCTIONING
here are some reminders:
not every system has amnesia, so not every new split will be "lost" or have no memories.
nowhere in the diagnostic criteria does it specify how new alters are supposed to act. therefore, you physically cannot fake-claim someone for their experiences when splitting.
some pwCDDs are near-constantly or very frequently splitting new parts - especially in polyfragmented DID. often, these people will be better equipped to function with new alters.
some pwCDDs split very rarely, & splitting may be highly distressing for them. be sure to listen to their needs if they require assistance.
not every instance of splitting is the same. some times may be easier than others - especially depending on what triggered the split!
all in all, there are many ways for a new alter to act. it is not your place to accuse someone of faking just because their splitting looks different to yours!

when you see a handful of posts of cult survivors sharing their experiences & you think to yourself (or even fucking SAY to them, sometimes) "there's no statistical way that so many people have been in cults; you're all fakers! stop with the attention-seeking!" instead of "damn, this is a lot more of a serious issue than i thought - i should learn & educate myself because i share a platform with these survivors & i want to be a good ally & source of support to them", then please. log the hell off. or at least leave the CDD & trauma recovery side of tumblr until you can learn that the people here are truly traumatised & trying their goddamn best. fuck you very much.
