This is such a good example of their relationship: Bruce saves Jason at the cost of himself, Jason attempts to get a rise out of Bruce to deflect his own vulnerability, realizes that Bruce is Not OK (TM) and immediately attempts to bridge the gap that he himself perpetuates, but Bruce has already moved to his next target and just leaves Jason there.

I was rereading second half of DN this weekend and I swear to god I can't believe anime just skipped this particular plot.

Bc a) Mello has more active part in story and actually had his own way of using Near b) those two kinda cooperating is sexy as hell c) more Mogi bc Mogi is amazing
(I really like the Polish translation of this moment "He is manipulated but not necessarily with he notebook" which imho has slightly different connotations)
Also, this fucker doing this I love him so much the little bastard

And this
Tumblr media
(also Near and Light just hating each other so much is so so entertaining, like honestly their dynamic is 👌)

Maybe it's because I don't find Anakin even slightly attractive, particularly in AotC, but like. The whole obsession he has for Padme in the beginning of the movie makes me so viscerally, deeply uncomfortable, and clearly Padme doesn't vibe with it either.
Just - that scene where Anakin and Obi-Wan are talking, and Anakin says Padme covered the cameras is such an example of that. Anakin's whole "I don't think she liked me watching her" is clearly meant to be funny but it also just makes my skin crawl. And Padme knows the danger she's in, she knows precisely who's after her, so her covering the cameras despite that? I'd assume that means she's also deeply uncomfortable with it.

okay confession time ive been reading too much of twilight-critical fanfiction and it just struck me how utterly disconnected Bella is. Like, her mother's off doing her own thing, in her own world, Charlie Swan, as much as i like his character, he feels like a non entity to me, and her friends in forks are literally loose threads brushed off. it's like her shield (or shield-adjacent) ability has been affecting her even before she was a vampire

did you watch Ed edd n eddy as a kid? Just- little pieces of your art reminds me of that art style (specifically how you drew Akari and a Ingo’s hands in your happy meal distortion piece)
Haha I did! Love that show. You know, now that you say that, I think I can see that!!

for some reason the intro to phonology and syntax classes for grad students are also the advanced phonology and syntax classes for undergrads, which means the professors are spouting off dense syntactical theory to undergrads who have already taken the intro class with them, meanwhile there's six of us grad students sitting to the side staring at each other like this
Tumblr media
#linguistics blogging#no joke I literally made this face in syntax earlier#the professor was describing contiguity theory and drawing syntax trees I could NOT understand#and an undergrad asked her ''what does this mean for phi-boundaries'' or something like that#and I just looked over at my friends and made this face#only to discover they were all also looking bewildered and/or miserable#I'm so glad it's not just me#because I have literally never taken a phonology or syntax class#and I am SO out of my depth#we did the BARE basics of this stuff in my minor#and definitely no theory#so I have no fucking idea what's going on#luckily out of the six of us only two have an actual linguistics degree before this#the rest of us are pretty new to the field#so we are suffering together#i hate syntax and phonology. god.#these technical fields are NOT for me#this is why I'm a sociolinguist!!!!!#I am not interested in theories about how language works from an abstract perspective#I'm much more interested in WHY language behaves the way it does socially#like. I don't care about the phonological reasons for a particular sound feature#im more interested in the social context. does this sound carry prestige? is it stigmatized? how has the perception of it changed over time#I don't care about the theory behind why certain languages have developed grammatical rules for word order#I'm more interested in what happens when a dialect forms from a community with a different L1#and how their ideas of word order affect their L2 dialect#you know?#the social and historical stuff is where I thrive#not this theory babble#like. the theory is important work. but it's not MY work.

apologies for being australian on main two times in a row but i find it really funny when people from other countries are first learning about the creatures we have over here and are just. so confused and bewildered. i remember that post of someone talking about how instead of the Easter Bunny, we have a mascot called the Easter Bilby and someone reblogged it going "what the fuck", and i'm just sitting there like "..... yeah? i thought everyone knew this" and it's very entertaining. seeing people be genuinely bewildered, confused and afraid that this silly lil guy exists,
Tumblr media
is some of the most entertaining shit ever and it'll never get old
this is the Greater Bilby, by the way, and it is currently a vulnerable species in Australia, with many efforts being made to save it from endangerment and extinction. there used to be a lot more of them, but because of threats to habitat and competition with other animals (like red foxes, feral cats and dingoes), they became an endangered species, though they fortunately now no longer hold that status. the Lesser Bilby is much less lucky though, as they were unfortunately deemed extinct in the 1950s. i love these lil guys so much and i want to hold one in my hands and give it a nice soft blanket in it's little burrow to curl up and fall asleep on :)

I needed a couple of hours to sort through my thoughts about 7x04 - because I was busy screaming, crying, kicking my feet giggling - but now I just gotta say, before I dive into any details: I AM SO INCREDIBLY HAPPY.
As a bisexual myself who realized she‘s always been bi at the ripe age of 30 and after already being very married to the very male love of her life (which wasn’t at all changed by the realization), seeing bi characters having their ‚oh‘ moment later in life than in their teens is SO VALIDATING.
I love how yes, there have always been hints and it makes sense for the character but they actually gave Buck the space to find out this new thing about himself. They showed an adult man figuring this important part of his identity out when he was ready for it. Without it being induced by trauma or relationship troubles. That is so so so meaningful and so so so beautiful at the same time. I legit CRIED LIKE A BABY watching Buck‘s face go ‚oh I see‘ after the kiss. He just landed in his body as the penny of truth dropped and he seemed so content it made me squeek. I love seeing our golden retriever carving his place out in the world and discovering how to fully embrace all of himself.
And I love he gets to do it with Tommy.
Yes, I am a buddie shipper and that hasn‘t changed. However, whichever way the show moves now, bi Buck means the world to me. And the way they are telling the story with Tommy in a gentle, realistic way, I hope we get more of that. Hell I even really like their vibe together. Tommy seems like he‘ll be okay holding the hand of a baby queer and help him dip his toe into the water. Wherever that leads, it was a genius decision to introduce him to Buck‘s story.
Now for the details:
This episode wasn‘t only beautiful, it was also hilarious. THE TOP GUN REFERENCE HAD ME HOLLERING. At that point I knew some queerness was gonna happen because you don’t make the queerest reference in movie history without reason. Also absolutely loved the sewer conversation (hooray for Ravi by the way, I missed that little dude) and the emotions Buck goes through during the conversation.
Buck‘s jealousy is as stupid as it is adorable and I have to say I did find Eddie the slightest bit unfair. He knows Buck has abandonment issues and still doesn‘t register that he might need some reassurance. Yes okay, I get he wanted a little payback for the Nathalia ‚she sees me‘ bs, but come on, Eds, cut the poor man some slack.
The acting in the episode? Chef‘s kiss. Oliver was amazing, but I don‘t see Lou getting enough credit. He already planted his visible interest in Buck in 7x03 nicely in that one tiny interaction at the end and he really delivered on the flirty banter in this episode. Oliver, meanwhile, has done such a great job at showing the gradual change in Buck and the nervousness and the curiosity and hopefulness it tugged on all of my heartstrings. Deserving of an Emmy-nom. Great Job, loved every second.
Maddy and Chim very also amazing in the ep, especially Chim clocking immediately why Buck really brought him to basketball. It‘s gonna be interesting to see their reaction to Buck‘s truth - if he‘s ready to share it yet.
The only thing that bugged me was that Athena‘s storyline felt very rushed. I liked the theme and I think it hinted at important conversations, but it resolved the conflict too fast and too easy - making said issues seem smaller than they are. I struggle to believe that they would let a POC kid off the hook that easily. I wish this was realistic, but I doubt it is.
Bachelor call was great, loved gossipy Josh (by god, I want more Josh, I love that goofball) and Chim going full fanboy.
Can‘t wait for next week and hope we get more Hen and Bobby there! I missed them this ep.
I am so excited to see where Buck‘s story arch will go next. I‘ll explode with happiness if it slowly drifts towards buddie, but I won’t be mad if it doesn‘t happen or if it does happen and the show takes its time to get there. A slow buildup for this would be chef‘s kiss and I have a lot of trust in ABC and the writers that this is how they will do it, if Buddie happens.
All in all: Favorite episode of all the series for me, worthy 100th episode, will watch a billion times, made me all warm and fuzzy and giggly.

do you believe Bruce is emotionally abusive? ik fans prioritise physical abuse and ultimately ignore emotional abuse tactics like parentification etc because it’s not “that bad”. I don’t believe Dick ever resents Bruce for letting him be robin (he’s grateful for it) , but in ntt he mostly resents him for being emotionally closed off, and rejecting him as a partner. Bruce worries for his kids safety so he pushes the whole “if you’re not perfect you’re dead” mentality onto Dick which ultimately is harmful to him. He’ll never regret being a hero but the rift between the two isn’t just a “we want different things” scenario but more that they’re incapable of giving the other what they want.
bruce being emotionally closed off from dick is what’s revisionist about that version of canon though. i think bruce can be bad at communicating sometimes esp when he’s deeply pained (like in knightfall, for example) but for the most part he and dick are shown to have great communication for decades before new teen titans and the adjacent post crisis starlin canon starts to rewrite that dynamic into something else entirely. per that version of canon i do believe he’s emotionally abusive but it’s not a version of canon i particularly appreciate bc it requires overriding the dynamic they had previously where they could certainly be prone to disagree at times but bruce was nonetheless willing to have an open and understanding conversation with dick about whatever the disagreement was. even the whole idea that bruce is responsible for dick believing that he has to be perfect or he has to be dead is one that new teen titans cements (or that issue of batman where bruce makes dick quit and jason is introduced thereafter)
i get that it’s easy to take new teen titans as gospel bc it is in essence the textbook source for dick but i think there should be some awareness too of how it twists that relationship between them and not necessarily for the better. i’m not opposed to bruce having faults he has to answer for. i absolutely agree he’s not cognizant enough of the complexes dick develops as a result of wanting to be seen as an equal, and thereby can’t realize the effect it has on dick for him to still be protective and fearful even if it’s ultimately out of goodwill and love. and there’s also the fact that even if he gives dick the space he desires to lead his own life it doesn’t mean he should be hesitant to reach out bc he’s afraid he’ll overstep by doing so, as a parent he should reaffirm his love for dick regularly regardless of knowing he might get some pushback bc dick is growing into his own (again, knightfall is a really superb example of this). but i also think those are tensions you can wholeheartedly explore without rendering bruce into a controlling and abusive figure, and i’m not sure who it benefits to write bruce as such in the long run
some of dick’s problems have to be his own, and he’ll never escape bruce’s shadow if the only source point of issues in his life is his relationship with bruce. that’s something i would actually apply to the robins at large. hardly any of them are allowed to explore problems entirely unique to themselves and i think that’s in large part bc writers simultaneously portray a mildly to explicitly abusive bruce at their leisure while refusing to ever actually address the elephant in the room that is literally of their own creation. a lot of people believe the bruce shouldn’t be an abuser argument is framed entirely as a resistance to bruce’s character assassination and for me i can admit that’s part of it, but a more pertinent part of it should also be the fact that bruce being written as an abuser is what truly chains his children to him forever to the point that they can never grow beyond that abuse bc writers refuse to allow them to. imagine the problems the robins could be addressing individually in their lives if not everything came down to them being fucked up bc that’s the way bruce raised them or failed to thereby. there’s a lot about the robins as individuals that’s deeply interesting and i think it’s not just a disservice to bruce but to them as well to write the relationships this way bc it obscures their own agency and ability to be explored for more than a haunted legacy narrative
#sry this is so very long. please know it is not me venting at you i simply have many thoughts 😭#but yeah like i think something that gets lost in translation is like. i absolutely do think those portrayals of bruce are abusive#i simply don’t think he should have been portrayed as such to begin with#starlin era bruce is very bewildering for me in all honesty i dislike it deeply#the issue where dick meets jason is one of my least favorite for the way it portrays bruce it feels so out of character for me#considering bruce was more than happy for dick to go off to college or to find his own place with the titans#and even with that famous issue where dick meets bruce after learning jason has died the writing is quite odd to me#i think bruce is very much someone who directs blame and frustration inward as opposed to outward#he’ll let himself get dog walked if he thinks he deserves it. which i think knightfall illustrates fabulously#the beginning of no man’s land as well#what i don’t think he would ever do is lash out at others when he knows the blame lies with himself. bruce is very self critical#so honestly that whole scene in the cave with him and dick. doesn’t exist to me i would literally rewrite it 😭#and i think it is very significant that wolfman chose to recreate that slap three times if memory serves while every other write in bat#editorial at the time straight up ignored it and acted like it never happened. like idk that plus the way bruce was characterized during#knightfall to me says a lot about how that was not supposed to be the status quo at all#anyway. sorry this has devolved into a whole other rant please do not mind me 😔#outbox
