tom cruise as a filmmaker is so funny because he’s absolutely one of our best living actors and producers (don’t argue with me it’s true) and with ease he could be doing more of what most people think of as Capital “A” Acting but instead he’s like “well i could focus on winning an oscar or i could fly planes and ride off cliffs while i’m still physically able and only one of these options will let me micro-manage the united states navy and be the first movie production to film inside westminster abbey”

#mf gave us so many iconic excellent dramatic and comedic performances that were snubbed time and time again #and then people wonder why eventually he decided he liked having fun more #that all being said he is giving à PERFORMANCE when he does these stunts full of nuance and emotion and subtlety #and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise or that what he does is east or less than because if it were then everyone would be doing it #he’s going 600mph in a fighter jet giving an actual performance while marvel actors are in a temperature controlled warehouse giving nothing

#i KNEW they would be excellent and i KNEW this episode went well enough that it spawned a spin-off series #and i've even seen/heard welcome to mountport multiple times #but. WHAT THE FUCK???? IM SO EMOTIONAL #as someone who loves musical theatre and used to do musical theatre as both an actor and musician #i am simultaneously completely stunned and awed by their talent and skill and sensibilities #and dying for a chance to have at it myself #unbelievably strong and powerful performances all around #including the writing/framing they were given to work with #and ESPECIALLY including that keyboard work good lord #game changer #dropout #welcome to mountport

Finished The Hollow Crown. The whole of season 1 was great but that last episode was incredible. It really highlights how phenomenal an actor Tom is. Maybe it's because he has so much training and experience in the classics, but he feels born to do Shakespeare and he really shined in the role of Prince Hal.

Despite struggling at times to understand certain lines, I was impressed time and time again by Shakespeare's way with words. Yes, I studied him in school but I couldn't appreciate it then, and it doesn't feel as powerful when you take each sentence apart and ask, "Now what do we think this means?" He truly was a master at his craft.

I bought a digital copy of the miniseries but I'll have to look for a physical copy, in case they try to de-list it. It's definitely worth a rewatch.

Side note: I really enjoyed Tom saying, "The elder I wax the better I shall appear." Ain't that the goddamn truth, sir!

278. Edge Of Doom (1950)

#edge of doom #edge of doom (1950)#2023filmgifs #my gifs #that was sooo much more nuanced and rageful than i expected #genuinely startled to hear such anti-church things expressed #in a Hays Code era film #but of course it was bookended by a lot of proper religiosity #and the voiceover was there to remind us #but i really loved how brutal and unsentimental the dialogue was #and how good all the performances were #i only wanted to hit Farley Granger a few times #he irritates me so much #but he was actually quite excellent here #and totally broke my heart when he said 'it seemed like no one cared'#of course i was there for Dana in a priest collar #and it was so fascinating to compare his performance #with Montgomery Clift in I Confess #in such similar stories #very different affect #Dana looks at everyone like he might consider snogging them #but the subtext with Farley Granger #definitely brought a strong queer energy to this #of course that might be my slash goggles lolz #also really loved the cinematography #i just love black and white film so much

if having interest in a movie because the lead actually showcases talent that I want to see and actually makes the movie look somewhat decent than the rest of the movies that have come before that then call me a salmon because I'm eating all the bait up!

taika has been so fucking annoying for the past couple of years but goddamn if he didn't bring all of his acting skills to the table for this season of ofmd

#i think it really helps that rhys darby is an excellent performer and a friend of his #obv rez dogs and wwdits are also excellent but i dont think he has a heavy hand in the actual production of those #on another note about ofmd #this person i used to hang with a lot during my first semester of college is a writer for the show #and i am somewhat sad that they kinda dropped me and started hanging out w a more pretentious artsier cliquey group #but i am so so grudgingly impressed when i see that their name at the end credits of some of the shows best eps #i am deeply jealous but like hey good for them #there's a few ppl i went to college with who've blown up in different ways and i'll admit most of them really deserve it #except one person who is coasting off nepo baby success just as much as they were back then!!!#her writing is as horrific as her comedic timing which should almost be impossible when her dad is who he is #truly embarrassing to not inherit even an ounce of his talent!

hala hala!!! also say my name and guerrilla!! the original wonderland choreo also rips, but those three are my faves! ateez has a very consistent choreographic style, thanks to working with the same choreographers frequently. they use a lot of similar shapes across their title track choreos! most commonly circles (usually all the members around one central person) and diagonals (usually alleys or lines of some kind). they also have really good and distinctive point moves, even their really difficult and almost anti-'viral' choreos like guerrilla have those scream moves and the head bobs from the dance break.

#i'm calling guerrilla anti-'viral' bc its a very 'deep third gen where they were trying to make choreos as hard as possible' choreo #and the only groups that ended up doing the dance challenge in the end were the really good baby 4th gen performances groups #its hard carry's younger cousin essentially #idk how to explain but all ateez choreos kind of look the same? in a good way obvs. like you can tell them all apart by point moves #but they share a LOT of similar shapes and methods of movement #which is indicative of using the same choreographers/the choreographers building a style that fits for them #kpop dance #ateez #ateez w #cyberpunk choreo comes up pretty high on that list too actually we won good with that one #and i do like wave. she's cute n funky #the pirate king choreo fucks pretty hard too. excellent debut choreo #answers #text

anyone else watch Hocus Pocus 2 thinking... so we’re just not gonna talk about how this book is bound in human flesh and we’re just not gonna wonder about how Gilbert made multiple black flame candles when the black flame candle is made “from the fat of a hanged man???” or was that just me?

it does genuinely piss me off how much of the greatest things about my old school was built off the blood sweat and tears of this one incredible passionate lovely teacher and they never ever ever gave him anything in return until he left for a better school during my a levels 😐 and then I had to have the shittiest teacher alive for othello instead of him who would have slayed it and I'm NOT bitter about it out all

#they did the same with the other best teacher in the english dept too and he left! so he couldn't teach us for yr 11/ a level either!#when he announced he was leaving i literally cried on the car ride home... it was traumatic #anyway sorry this isn't even about him rn. the point is he literally did everything by himself in his own time not getting paid at all #and he was excellent. he taught me latin for years and it wasn't always the best because like. it's latin for two hours on a thursday #after school we were tired as hell. but it was ALWAYS meaningful it was always worth going and i miss it and #the memories of it all the time #and i didn't get to do a latin a level which I'm also sooooo not bitter #and then the icing on the cake is that every single christmas he wrote casted directed and performed in #an original christmas pantomime show for the kids. every year. BY HIMSELF!!!#and it was AMAZING and forged so many lovely memories for everyone and none of the current students there will ever experience it :(#we literally got the day off to watch it too because of him. and he got paid DUST #he should've killed the headmaster actually like oh my god...#ugh it's sooooo much easier to remember the good stuff once ur out of there. but i do miss him and my other english teacher #so much it is unfuckingreal

… In the series finale, you know it’s a con, bc if the team were actually dead, Nate would have been catatonic. He wouldn’t be saying a word, and he wouldn’t be analysing the situation.

#Leverage #Spoilers #Nate would not survive losing his family a second time #he does an excellent job pretending #but anyone who truly knew them would know that you'd never get anything out of him if they were really dead #which is how Sterling knew he was lying the moment they spoke #Sterling was the only person there who knew them well enough to know how badly losing them would break Nate #bc he knows them and respects them #still quite the performance #I gotta wonder how they were gonna come back from this if they had gotten renewed #I'm sure they'd've found a way #Moreau could escape that'd bring Nate and Sophie out of retirement #but Leverage is an example of a really emotionally packed and strong finale #which is part of why I can't bring myself to watch the sequel bc while I'd love to haveLeverage back #it's not the same w/out Nate and they ended it SO WELL for all of them #if they'd continued it w/ the original crew I could do it but the changes just put me off #but yeah just #such a good ending #I love this family #like you can tell they knew they might be cancelled #the parents setting the kids up for life and leaving the operation to them #naming the heir apparent #the princess and her prince reign supreme and the lieutenant continues as he always has #just as he likes it #despite his close relationship w/ Nate Eliot was never pick for successor bc Nate knew him well enough to know he didn't want to be #Eliot's an enforcer that's who he is #he's Nate's enforcer and now he's Parker's but that loyalty to Nate remains too #plus you KNOW Nate and Sophie come back to run cons from time to time and they all stay in touch #now pls excuse me while I get emotional of Eliot being paired w/ Nate and Sophie in so many s5 eps #the way he's the first to step up and reassure them that the kids have it
