There is a very real possibility that despite Maul's efforts, his connection to the force is an open secret in the Orsis Academy. Likely the subject of gossip and conjecture.
Maul, oblivious as he is, probably hasn't noticed. But Sidious would have. It would be a security risk, if the inhabitants of the Academy were not already scheduled to die.

the plot of this one is like. Maul gets captured and he is being extremely uncooperative so Obi-Wan shows up to try to help interrogate him (being the negotiator and all that). and then.
you can see in this post this fic's birth inside my brain. basically it's maul wanting to be dominated but in a "forced to submit" way because admitting you have desires is for cowards.
(and then I made him be in rut because it was an easy reason for him to be acting weird and an in-story way for them both to deny this means anything)

Maul age reference! For context, he became friends with Kilindi 3 years into his time at Orsis, and he entered the academy at about 7 years old.
Also, I would like to point out that his age is known by Sidious. It seems this information is kept from him, perhaps for security reasons, but more likely for mind games.
Sidious does not want Maul to have any strong understandings of self. He gets his tattoos (dathomirian slave markings) and his name (his sith title, his job). That is all.

Maul lies here -- he never killed the chargrecks. The narration does not mention Maul finishing them off.
They were vulnerable and prone, and Maul could have easily finished the job. In fact, it would reinforce his lie that he killed them barehanded, because he could use the bodies as proof or prevent them being spotted again later. He decided to spare them, instead.
Perhaps there is some real good in him.
