#best friend argyle
Text
Best friend!Argyle listening to the reader complain about a crush
Summary: You confide in your best friend argyle about a secret crush from your past. A boy you loved in Hawkins, but could never confess your feelings for.
Authors note: I have been SCOURING tumblr for some Best friend!Argyle content and I’ve found nothing?? So I figured if I can’t find it, write it.
Warnings: this is a first draft. Pls ignore any writing mistakes🥲I also have not written fanfiction in literal years so bear with me as I allow my creative juices to flow.
Your best friend Argyle was eyeing you suspiciously as you wrote in your notebook. “Whatcha writin?” he asks before taking a hit from the bong. You squeal, sitting up on his bed and looking at him. “I can’t stop thinking about this boy from Hawkins..”
You and your brothers, Johnathan and Will, as well as your mom Joyce and your…adoptive sister El, had moved to Lenora from Hawkins about a year ago.
“A boy from Hawkins? Is he like, a cute boy?” Argyle asks you in between coughs. “First of all, dude you have got to change that bong water. That shit grows mold in like three days, ew.” you say, causing him to look down at his bong, inspecting the water to see how gross it is. He makes a face of disgust. “Fair point. What’s second of all?”
“He is so cute!”
“Like a scale of 1 to 10.”
“Well damn girl does this mystery boy have a name?” Argyle asks, genuinely interested. You love how good of a listener Argyle is. He’s always genuinely interested in what you have to say. He never makes you feel like what you care about doesn't matter.
“His name is Eddie. He’s the coolest guy I’ve ever met, and everyone thinks he’s some freak, but he’s literally the sweetest guy ever. Anyway, long story super short, he’s basically the love of my life who I can never ever under any circumstances confess my feelings to because of the chance of me ruining our friendship.”
Argyle looks at you with squinted eyes, not sure how to help the situation. “So.. what are you writing?”
“It’s a letter.. to Eddie. A confession I will probably never send.” You say sadly, looking down at your notebook. “You gotta send that shit man,” argyle says, standing up and grabbing the notebook from you. You don’t object, letting him read it. “You gotta mail this shit right now,” he says tossing it on the bed. “You can’t just keep these feelings bottled up! Tell him how you feel!”
“Who?” Johnathan says, having now returned from the bathroom. . “This Eddie dude,” Argyle says ratting you out.
You playfully smack him with the notebook. “Argyle!”
“Oh yeah, I’ve been waiting for her to do that for years. Good luck man,” Johnathan says. “We gotta head out in like 10 minutes, but uh, let me get some of that,” he says, gesturing to the bong. You grab it from the floor and hand it to your brother. He sits in one of the bean bag chairs that is on Argyle’s bedroom floor. “I just don't know what to do. I don't want to ruin things between us. What if Eddie doesn’t feel the same?” you complain, throwing yourself face first into a pillow.
Jonathan takes a massive hit, handing the bong to argyle who was already blazed enough. “He does, everyone can see it. You and he are the only ones who can’t,” Jonathan says in between fits of coughing. He smiles sorta and closes his eyes, letting his head fall back in the chair, feeling instantly relaxed. “Well there’s your answer man, purple palm tree delight!” Argyle says with a big goofy smile. “Shit fixes everything..” He taps your foot to get you to sit up and hands you the bong. You sit up and take it from him, taking a hit slightly smaller than Johnathan’s. You all sit in silence for about three minutes before it hits you.
“I’ll go back for spring break! Yeah, Mike is coming to see El and Will, I’ll just go back to Hawkins! I’m sure the Wheelers would be happy to let me stay there. It will be nice to see everyone. And… maybe ill finally tell Eddie how I feel about him.”
“Told ya it fixes everything.”
“Shit we gotta leave now if we want to get Will and El from school,” Jonathan says, shooting up from his seat. You had convinced the two boys to skip school with you today, something you often used to do with Eddie.
To be continued? I might link this up somehow with my steve x reader x eddie love triangle story. We shall see? Thoughts?

billy’s mom waking him up while it’s still dark, whispering even though neil’s working the night shift. it’s a couple days before his tenth birthday and she’s telling him they’re going to have their very own adventure, just like the ones in billy’s books. she grabs an already packed suitcase from under billy’s bed and kisses him on the nose, tells him to get dressed quick. the two of them leave in an old beat up yellow bug that she managed to get for a third of the asking price and keep parked around the corner until now. they stay with friends and jump from place to place so neil can’t track them down. billy gets used to surfing couches and staying in motels.
he spends his tenth birthday in a diner, his mom gets him a big stack of pancakes and a milkshake with extra cherries. gets a candle out her pocket along with her silver lighter. sings happy birthday and pulls a face when the waitress frowns at them, just to make billy laugh. she sips at her coffee while billy tucks in. smiles when he holds some out with a “c’mon mama, share with me.”
billy thinks it’s neat. thinks it’s the best birthday he’s ever had.
they eventually end up with a place in california, a little bungalow near the coast and billy grows up with his mom. billy gets pretty shirts from the thrift store ‘cause his mama lets him do stuff like that. doesn’t call him a queer, doesn’t force a baseball bat into his hands whilst yelling at him for crying, for being a pussy. his mom lets him read and keep a journal and press flowers between the pages of the neverending story, she plays hendrix and dusty springfield and laughs when billy comes home from his friends’ house with his first piercing at thirteen. she doesn’t tear down his posters or yell when she finds him using her eyeliner.
and everything’s perfect. sort of.
they have bad days- billy’s mom has bad days. billy calls them gray days ‘cause that’s how the world looks when she’s like this. all her color gone. no singing-dancing in the kitchen or baking five different kinds of cake because she couldn’t decide which one was best, no last minute trips to the beach or sitting outside at night and telling billy about the stars. instead she’ll stay in bed, won’t go to work. she’ll stare at the wall blankly and look right through billy when he tries to talk to her. she won’t take the pills the doc gave her and billy doesn’t know what to do. never knows what to do. just chews at his lip until it bleeds, bites at his thumb until it’s red raw. he’ll get in the bed with her. lay beside her and just talk like she used to do with him when he had a nightmare. hum a song to her.
billy’s still pissed at the world just slightly less so. still has that anger and anxiousness simmering just below the surface and shows his teeth when cornered. he’s still hardened in a way that a kid shouldn’t be but. it’s different. there’s no neil. the only bloody noses he gets are at school, when he fights with the kids who call him a fag and a fairy, call his mom a basket case. he uses fists when they laugh and ask if she’s all there with a finger pointing at their heads, ask if billy will “catch the crazy.”
those are billy’s bad days. sitting in the principals office, icing his knuckles.
when he’s fifteen, billy manages to bag a job at the local auto repair by turning up every day and telling howie how good he’d be, that he knows cars and it’s all he wants to do and please please please. eyebrows pulled together, eyes puppy dog wide and hands clasped in front of him until howie grumbles, throws an oily rag at billy. says fine but billy’s gotta pay for anything he damages. someone brings in a chevy camaro and billy asks howie to let him help fix it up. does the begging again until howie laughs. says get a hold of yourself, kid, voice fond as he ruffles billy’s hair.
billy’s four months away from turning seventeen when the doorbell goes. he’s eating a sandwich and watching knight rider. he’s wearing the necklace his mom got him for his last birthday and- he answers the door. doesn’t think twice. freezes when he sees neil standing there. he looks different. hair a little shorter and more wrinkles. where billy’s gained weight, gained muscle, neil’s lost it. his eyes are a little sunken and he’s still got his wedding band on. he reeks of booze. billy has to remind himself to speak, just says “yeah?” his voice comes out small and neil smiles at him. smiles and billy feels this weird twist in his stomach ‘cause .. that’s his dad and he hasn’t seen him in years and it twists and twists and-
turns out. not much has changed. billy realises a little too late that neil will always be neil. they run again. have to leave everything behind. billy doesn’t get to say bye to his friends, to howie, to the car. they leave a lot of stuff behind and head in any direction away from neil. they both try to keep the mood light, take turns driving and play the tapes billy grabbed. they end up in indiana- hawkins. they stay at a motel until billy’s mom finds a place for dirt cheap. it has two bedrooms and a dingy bathroom, a living room slash kitchen and one hell of a damp problem. it’s dirt cheap for a reason.
it’s above a shop in town and- it’s fine. their landlord is an asshole but they’re together and they’ve got a roof over their heads. billy’s enrolled at hawkins high and his mom gets a job at the laundromat. he tells her that he doesn’t need to go to school, that he could just work and help pay the bills but his mom won’t have any of it. says that she wishes she had finished school and that billy’s too clever to waste it. that he has potential.
billy knows the reason she dropped out of school was because she had him. he just nods, rests his head on her shoulder.
it’s billy’s first day at school and his mom drives him to make sure he actually goes. he gets out the car and tries to shake the nerves off. straightens up and puts on his act. plasters a fake smile on his face and it’s working, he’s got most of the girls swooning and the boys at least seem curious. billy looks around and his eyes land on a guy leaning up against a bmw. his hair’s coiffed to high heaven and he’s wearing a polo, preppy as fuck but- pretty. it’s one of the first things billy realises about him, all doe eyes and moles dotted just about everywhere. he’s got a smirk on his face. not aimed at billy but the guy beside him.
pretty-boy walks over to him and billy raises an eyebrow, plays it cool. he introduces himself as steve and billy gets the idea that he’s top dog at hawkins high, is immediately proved right when they step into the building. king steve, freckles calls him. billy laughs- catches steve looking at him when he does and feels his face get hot. steve just smiles wider, calls billy california and tells him to sit with them at lunch. billy tries to ignore the way steve’s smile makes him feel like the rug’s been pulled out from under his feet.
he nods and steve grins. tugs at one of billy’s curls.
says “i think you’re gonna like it here, california.”

(Part 1) (Part 2) (Part 3)
The Harrington house is big and it’s nice to look at, or it would be if Gareth was into the boring minimalist style, but there’s no warmth to it.
That’s all he could notice while he was pulling off his jeans and neatly folding them up to place on the top of a chest of draws in a guest bedroom. The walls are white and the accents a single shade of brown. Even Gareth’s oppressively suburban home had more character than this.
And it just didn’t seem to fit with Steve. Steve, in Gareth’s admittedly limited understanding of him, was more suited to a smaller but still nice house, with appliances that made funny noises if they weren’t used the right way, and was always full of people. A house that had character built into its very foundations.
He met Jeff and Grant back in the kitchen, trying his hardest not to stare too long at the single family portrait hung at the end of the hallway. Jeff was wearing red shorts and Grant was wearing blue ones. It seemed that only Gareth got the memo about wearing black and committing to the Not-Cult Cult aesthetic.
“What’s the plan then, Gare-Bear?” Jeff asked as Gareth sidled up next to them.
Gareth grabbed a can off the side, it was fresh out of the fridge and had condensation trickling down the sides. He assumed it was alright to take it. “I’m gonna talk to Buckley, feel out how to go about this.”
“And what should we do?” Grant asked.
“Make sure Eddie doesn’t do anything stupid?”
Grant scoffed. “Dude, you’ve met him, be serious.”
“I am!” Gareth replied. “I want this to work out for them and that means keeping Eddie’s foot out of his mouth.”
They all paused to remember the many, many times that Eddie’s inability to shut up had gotten them in trouble. He was great at talking himself out of trouble as well, but it was always preferable to not be in trouble in the first place.
“So make sure Eddie doesn’t say something stupid before he can confess his love and get a pass for all the stupid shit he says?”
Gareth allowed himself to chuckle. “Yeah, something like that.”
He led them all back out to the garden, cracking open the can as he went. The cold liquid felt good sliding down his throat; it wasn’t quite the peak of the summer and it was only going to get hotter, but Gareth didn’t think there was much point in not enjoying the smaller things in life.
Eddie was perched on the edge of the pool, kicking his feet gently where they were submerged in the water, as he spoke to Steve. Steve who was in the pool but had pulled himself out enough to rest his crossed arms on the poolside and use them as a pillow for his head. They looked like they belonged in a movie; so caught up in one another that they didn’t react to the screaming from the others playing chicken (Nancy on Jonathan’s shoulders and Robin on Argyle’s).
Gareth was shocked to see the way Steve was looking at him. He knew Steve was into Eddie, that much was obvious, but until that moment he had just thought it was a little crush.
This put a bit of a spanner in the works of his original plan of getting everyone to play enough party games until they could get Steve and Eddie together in seven minutes in heaven.
“Eddie!” Jeff shouted, “Did you smoke all the weed while we were getting changed?”
Eddie gasped dramatically, clutching at his heart. “Would I ever do that to you Jeffy?”
“Yes,” Jeff deadpanned.
Steve laughed delightedly, bumping Eddie in the knee with his elbow.
“Fine, fine,” Eddie threw his hands up in surrender. “Stevie said we aren’t allowed to smoke and swim so we didn’t light it.”
“I don’t want you to drown,” Steve said quietly, a haunted look crossing over his face that left as quickly as it came.
Eddie reached out to squeeze his shoulder, something unsaid passing between them. “I’m still here.”
Steve nodded, then shook his head with a small smile, as if he knew he was being silly.
Gareth shared a glance with his band mates, Eddie pointedly avoiding it. Another thing that would never be explained to them.
Luckily the game of chicken came to an end with Robin crashing down into the water, her legs pulling Argyle with her, to the tune of Nancy and Jonathan yelling in triumph to break Steve out of whatever spiral he’d fallen into.
Steve turned towards them with a smile. He patted Eddie’s hand where it was still on his shoulder then pushed off from the wall to join his friends, calling for his turn.
Eddie’s hand hovered in the air for a second before falling back down to his side.
Robin broke off from the group, stating her intention to grab another drink as she furiously tried to push her now wet hair out of her eyes. Argyle eagerly called for Steve to go against Nancy this time.
Gareth nodded to Jeff and Grant. “Go cheer him up. I hate it when he looks like a kicked puppy.”
“Guy doesn’t know what he has with those eyes, I swear,” Jeff mumbled as he and Grant moved to sit either side of Eddie, both bumping shoulders with him.
Gareth waited until Robin was digging through the cooler and muttering to herself to join her.
She jumped slightly as she turned away from the cooler and realised that Gareth was there, evidently having not heard him approach.
“Buckley,” He greeted.
“Emerson.”
Gareth winced. This wasn’t supposed to be some sort of Mexican standoff. So he changed angles.
“Eddie says you know about him.”
Robin’s features softened. “Yeah and I know you’re protecting your friend, but I promise I will never ever do anything to hurt him. None of us will.|”
Gareth smiled. “I wasn’t worried about that.”
“So what can I help you with?”
Gareth rubbed his hands over his face. He was suddenly faced with no idea how to word his questions.
“Have you noticed that Eddie has a crush?”
Robin laughed loudly, waving away the bemused glances thrown her way from the pool. “Yeah, I have. I’ve noticed Steve’s too because I know that’s going to be your next question. They’re kinda unbearable to be around sometimes.”
“Oh,” Gareth chuckled, a weight lifted off his shoulders. “Good.”
“Why? Are you planning something?” She sat forward, a manic smile on her face and clutching her can so hard there were small dents in the aluminium from her fingers.
“I was thinking seven minutes in heaven but...” he sighed. “They’re too into each other to have their moment be during a stupid game.”
“You really care about Eddie, don’t you?” Robin asked gently.
Gareth narrowed his eyes on her. “Of course I do, he’s my best friend.”
Robin held her hands up in surrender. “I’m not judging you. I feel the same way about Steve.”
“Good. That’s good”
They both fell quiet as they watched their friends. Steve, on Argyle’s shoulders, laughing at Nancy and Jonathan arguing as they strategised. Eddie was squashed between Jeff and Grant, batting on their chests to release him. If it weren’t for his hair not being tied back, Gareth knew he would have thrown himself into the pool to escape. He knew Jeff and Grant knew that as well.
“So what are we going to do?” Gareth asked.
“I don’t know,” Robin said. “But we’ll figure something out.”
They spent the rest of the afternoon in the pool. Gareth and Eddie made a great team for the chicken tournament, but Argyle won the biggest splash competition they got going. It was funny to just act like teenagers, no school to worry about or crazy religious types out on witch hunts.
Steve handed them all towels as the sun began to go down. Their fingertips wrinkled and dry as Eddie finally got to light the joints to pass around. They laughed and shared stories; Gareth even got to share his favourite about Eddie calling him from a phone booth in the middle of the night so Gareth could steal his mom’s car to go get him since his plan to hitchhike his way home failed.
At some point, pizza was ordered while they lazed around. The joints had long since been smoked down to their cherry and discarded on the floor to clean up later when they were less drunk or high. Steve had told them not to worry about it.
Gareth spent his time watching Steve and Eddie pass tapes back and forth, heads leant close as they discussed the music on them, occasionally stopping the tape playing so they could switch it out for whatever song they were agreeing or disagreeing about. He made eye contact with Robin who just smiled gently, so fond of her friends. If he was able to see himself, her look was probably reflected on his own face.
The doorbell rang, heard out in the yard only because Steve’s parents had a device installed that rang a bell outside in case they weren’t inside to be able to hear the actual doorbell.
Steve jumped up to get it.
“Eddie go help him,” Robin said, pushing her toes into Eddie’s arm in a half hearted shove.
“Stevie’s got it,” Eddie moaned, clearly not wanting to move from his spot.
Robin shared a conspiratorial grin with Nancy, then both chorused, “Don’t ya, big boy.”
Jonathan and Argyle looked just as confused as Gareth felt. He never got the full story from Eddie about what happened over spring break, Eddie was alive and that was enough for him, but sometimes he wished he could know just so he understood what the fuck was going on.
Eddie flushed bright red all over his body. “Shut up,” he hissed. But it was evidently enough to get him to jump and follow Steve into the house.
Before Gareth could even attempt to ask about it, Nancy swung her legs around off the sun lounger and clasped her hands together.
“So,” She said as she pushed her sunglasses up into her hair. “We all saw that right?”
“Saw what?” Robin squeaked.
Gareth didn’t bury his face in his hands at her lack of subtlety.
“Steve and Eddie are very obviously flirting with each other,” Nancy said slowly, deliberately.
Jonathan hummed in agreement. “Yeah, it’s not the first time either.”
Robin opened and closed her mouth like a fish as she tried to come up with something to say. Obviously she couldn’t say anything that would out her best friend, but if she denied being able to see it then she ran the risk of being committed to a mental institution. She looked scared.
“And is that a problem, Wheeler?”
Gareth couldn’t be sure where the venom in his voice came from, he was sure that Nancy Wheeler was a nicer girl than her pinched features sometimes made her appear, but seeing Robin flounder and the thought of Eddie facing even more bullshit  than he already had made something protective flare to life inside of him.
Nancy sniffed disdainfully. “Obviously not. I would die for those two, I just want them to be happy.”
A tense silence fell over them.
“They don’t know that we know,” Robin said quietly.
“So we can’t be obvious,” Jonathan replied. “Doesn’t mean we can’t encourage them in the right direction.”
Argyle, his eyes trained on the stereo still playing a Queen song, a thoughtful look on his face that looked completely alien. He turned to where Gareth, Jeff and Grant were all sitting together on the same sun lounger. “You’re in a band right?”
Shit. Argyle was right. Gareth mentally cursed himself for not thinking of it sooner. Eddie had learnt Steve’s favourite song, they were going to play Steve’s favourite song as soon as they got it down; the drunks that usually watch them would probably appreciate something more country-rock than metal.
“Argyle, you’re a genius.”

some mild dot lore for context but I had a late night student radio show with my best friend when I was in college and I just think that Robin and Steve deserve to have the same
they have 2-3 listeners on average, they each pick half the songs for the show each week which means the line-up is inconsistent at best, they spend the breaks telling each other about their weeks because mostly they started this as an excuse to have built in time to hang out, Jonathan regularly calls in whenever they try to actually talk about music because he really needs them to know that that's not true actually and this is why (they know it's not true, it's just fun to have Jonathan on air with them, he gets so exasperated and it's cute)
sometimes Eddie lays on the couch in the studio while they're on air and will either chime in on their conversations even though he doesn't have a microphone or fall dead asleep to the point of snoring with no in-between
sometimes Steve and Robin bring in some new recipe Argyle tried out and eat and review it on air, the results of which usually end up with them deciding the food is delicious and Robin reminding their listeners that mayonnaise is disgusting even if there was no mayonnaise involved
they finish at 1AM on Sunday mornings and Nancy picks them up so they don't have to walk home from the station in the dark and Robin always gets shotgun and Steve puts his feet up on the seat in the back even when Eddie is also there and they meet Jonathan and Argyle at the 24hr diner off-campus and treat their trauma-induced insomnia like a ritual of friendship instead of a hindrance to their lives and it's good
messy and weird and codependent and good

mike wheeler is so goofy. he’s a loser. he has a big heart. he’s a leader. he’s gay. but most importantly, if you invite him to a location anywhere near a beach, he will have his visor and flip flops on stand-by
like bro did not show up ready to roller skate. he showed up like the personified lyrics of ‘starships’ by nicki minaj
“let's go to the beach-each, let's go get a wave // they say, what they gonna say // have a drink, clink, found the bud light // bad bitches like me is hard to come by // the patrón own, let's go get it on // the zone on, yes, i’m in the zone // is it two, three? leave a good tip // i'ma blow off my money and don't give two shits, oh-oh”

Jonathan: Argyle kissed me.
Robin: No!
Steve: Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god!!
Jonathan: It was unbelievable!
Steve: Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god!!
Robin: Ok, alright we wanna hear everything. Steve, get the wine and unplug the phone. Jonathan, does this end well or do we need tissues?
Jonathan: Oh, it ended very well.
Steve: Do not start without me! Do not start without me!!
Robin: Alright, let's hear about the kiss. Was it like...was it like, a soft brush against your lips or was it like a, y'know, "I gotta have you now" kinda thing?
Jonathan: Well, at first it was really intense, y'know, and then...oh god, and then we just sorta sunk into it...
---
Argyle: And then I kissed him.
Nancy: Tongue?
Argyle: Yeah.
Eddie: Cool

Y’know, I don’t think Jonathan is Argyle’s “only friend”. Argyle very much reads to me as a group hopper. His personality is so infectious and chill that I feel like he would get along with everyone. Maybe he didn’t have anyone he was super close with before Jonathan, but he certainly would have been friendly with a lot of people at school. Going off of that, Jonathan would also awkwardly tag along to the parties Argyle’s invited to because he has nothing better to do and he likes hanging out with Argyle. But turns out, everyone likes hanging out with Argyle, from the jocks to the stoners to the theatre kids to the cheerleaders. (That totally wouldn’t make Jonathan jealous, not at all) And more often than not, Jonathan is left standing alone near the door while Argyle goes and mingles around with all these different people. But he would always come back to Jonathan afterwards, making sure he’s okay and comfortable. Jonathan is not Argyle’s only friend, but he is his closest and truest friend.
(Or at least that’s how I interpret it)

the fact that argyle wasnt listed in the cast of the first episode of s5 is... surprisingly more heartbreaking than i was expecting. i dont know why but for whatever reason i just assumed he was gonna be there, even though they hadnt said anything about him coming back. and yeah, storyline wise, him going back to cali makes the most sense, its his home, its where his family is (even though we dont get to see them in the show), and especially with the time skip to 1987 occuring sometime in the season, it wouldnt really make sense for him to still be in hawkins after an entire year has passed. regardless of all this however, i really am gonna miss his character. he didnt fit in with the dark, supernaturalesque world of hawkins and the upside down, but i really liked the contrast his character brought to the show. it was nice to see someone from outside of the party and the tight knit reality of hawkins be thrust into the chaos that the reccuring characters face every season, and scenes with him in them were always a well-valued break from the grim and horror of the rest of the show.
thoughts aside, im gonna miss his character a lot, and i hope at the very least, they give him an appropriate send-off at the beginning of the season, bringing his story to a proper end

anyway thinking abt mike/el’s storylines n the ways they compare n contrast... how El is having memories of how someone tried to take advantage of her loneliness and a shared experience to take advantage of her and control her for their own benefit... and how Mike is feeling something but doesnt know what it is, and Will is feeling the same way but doesn’t think Mike feels the exact same way he does... how they both still click, how they both want to reach out and hold on to one another but are afraid because they both think, as Robin said for us earlier, “I ask out the wrong [girl], and bam, I’m a town pariah.”
it’s frustrating as viewers but also sweet that both Will and Mike refuse to make assumptions about one another cuz they both know what that’s like and how assumptions have been used to bully each of them respectively n just... gahhhh. i want them to really see each other by the end of this season so very badly.. </3
