In our final week of shows we all came down to the theatre one night to take group shots from any major ensemble scenes in full costume, to make sure we could all appreciate the fully-lit efforts of the costume team for years to come.
This was our biggest group - the Beggars in Paris. It's still only about half of our cast. The full cast were genuinely never all in the same room at the same time!

“Panhandle Busk"
We do not stop
To drop a single, crumpled, tattered, unused dollar bill
Into the streetside performer’s hungry tips
For in their scraps, their elegance
We do not see
Refuse to see
Any more than beggars; poor
Noise and nuisance
Inconvenient to the day
So we do not stop and listen
To the well rehearsed movements
How can a value be ascribed
To what can barely be described
We do not stop
To think of hours spent
The minutes, days, the years
Overcoming ridicule and fear
To show something true and near
We pull our phones and record the show
And share with our all friends
Look down
Look down
At the starving, ravenous box for tips
Are they not worth loose change?
Enough to wish to share
To remember
Not enough to pay
What is the value
Of one who seems to lack values

The subtly altered repetition of the first line in the second verse of “At The Last” repeating three times at the end before it transitions into the bridge just hits so hard.
“I’m a good man on the whole!
Who can blame me for looking
out for number one?
Never killed, I never stole.
Small indulgence now and then,
So what of it?
I’m a good man!
I’m a good man.
Am I a good man?
Thought I was…”
Mid-verse the instruments cut out and slowly build back in, grabbing your attention that something has changed. The emphatic statement of vindication becomes an even reassurance, then a nervous question with a now-uncertain answer, and in the space of four short lines you see the lifelong illusion that this prideful selfish man has built up around himself crumbling before his eyes, and he’s left with nothing but the devastating, horrific truth that he has wasted his entire life and is now condemned to die with nothing but his guilt and regret. Chills.

transcript:
just had a talk with a friend about this, so i thought i'd get on here with a reminder that "criminal gangs of beggars" aren't a real thing, they're a stereotype mostly born out of racism (particularly anti-roma). if someone's in the street begging, they are in poverty.
"these beggars are organized" that means they pool their funds and support each other as a community, not that they don't need aid. "this beggar lied to me to get money" that doesn't mean they don't need the money. "i don't like them" that's a you problem.
additionally, homeless and poor people know best what their needs are and the best way you can help them is money. don't condescend to them bc you think they will buy drugs. addicts won't get clean through withheld aid, and they deserve as much support as anyone else.
i only have german sources about the "gangs" rn but i trust y'all to google translate: 1. [link one] 2. [link two]
also this might be interesting (english): [link three]
if you can't or don't want to give something, then don't! be friendly, say i can't right now, treat them like a human being. just don't try to justify your decision through racism, ableism and poverty stigma. i know it's uncomfortable. sit with that discomfort.
