I’ve always loved music. Since I was tall enough to reach the piano, I would try to play it. Not many people in my family know how to play the piano. Fiona and Lip know a small bit, but Frank is the one who knows it the best.

I’ve played the piano in the school orchestra since 5th grade. In those years, I’ve participated in competitions and won many of them as well. With it being the middle of senior year, I decided to apply to some orchestras and universities.

Ever since I was young, it has been my dream to join the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. They were the first Orchestra I auditioned for. I also applied to the University of Chicago. I’m not very smart like my brother, Lip, but I thought it would be a better chance at doing something with my life if I applied to colleges instead of only orchestras.

I’ve always felt like an outcast in my family of outcasts. I didn’t tell anyone I auditioned and applied to stuff because I don’t want to get their hopes up.

Timeskip

It’s been almost 5 months since I auditioned for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. I’ve already gotten rejection letters from the colleges and smaller orchestras, so I’m not going to be surprised when I get rejected from this one too.

With it being the middle of June, my high school graduation is coming up in a few days. I still haven’t told anyone about what I’m doing after I graduate because I’m still not sure myself.

While sitting on the couch, Fiona gets home from work and sits next to me. “Graduation is two days away. What are you planning to do after?” She asks me. I knew this conversation was coming. She had the same one with Lip and Ian.

“I already have a job lined up. I start in a week.” I told her. I decided to get a job since I don’t know what I’m going to do.

“OK, that's good.” Fiona gets up and goes upstairs.

Two days Later

Today is the day I’m finally graduating. All my family is here, except for Frank of course. I’m standing in line waiting for my name to be called. There's only a few people in front of me. I’m getting nervous as I approach the stage. Only two people are in front of me now. I don’t know why I’m so nervous.

One person is in front of me. I feel like throwing up. “Joanna Gallagher.” My name gets called. I walk on the stage with my eyes wide. The principal hands me my diploma and I walk away. I don’t bother sticking around for the end, I just run to my family.

When we get home, I go up to Debbie and I’s room to change. With the room being so small, we have to sleep on bunk beds.

After changing, I go back downstairs and notice Fiona and Lip on the couch looking at something. I don’t see anyone else, so I assume they went to get party supplies.

“What are you guys doing?” I ask them. They jump off the couch and Lip puts something behind his back. “What are you two hiding?” I step closer to them.

“We should be asking what you’re hiding Jo.” Lip says. I freeze. Did they find out about the colleges I didn’t get into? Did they find out about my audition for the orchestra?

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” They can tell when I’m hiding something. My face gets all red and my eyes go wide when I am hiding something.

“We’re not mad at you.” Fiona takes a paper that Lip had behind his back. “ You should probably read this.” She hands the paper to me and they both go to the kitchen.

As I read the paper, I start to tear up.

Dear Ms. Joanna Gallagher,

We are pleased to say you have been accepted to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. We were very pleased by your audition. If possible, we would love to have you play as our main pianist.

I didn’t bother to read any further. Tears were streaming down my face as I got up and started jumping around. “I got in! I got in!” I was screaming. Fiona and Lip walked back into the living room and watched me. When I stopped, I noticed Fiona was crying too.

minato - alt rock, pop punk, gothwave, video game osts. i say video game osts bc i yhink minato would like sitting around in a video game afk just to listen to the background music. i dont think minato is a goth but i feel as if gothwave has a sound he’d find enjoyable

kotone - alt rock, hip hop/rap, pop rock. she loves to lip sync to it and u can hear the song she’s lip syncing to bc i also know kotone probably turns her volume to max so loud you’d think she’ll damage her ears someday if not soon

yukari - dance pop, new wave, pop. she’s one of those people who hates country and sucks at listening to music outside her preferred genre. secretly likes a few alt songs but she’d never put them on her main playlist

junpei - hip hop, r&b. probably also a pop enjoyer, but honestly he’d like anything if it were catchy. he loves to dance and it sucks bc he’s really good at it so nobody can make fun of him

fuuka - alt/indie, pop. she’d also enjoy video game music, like minecraft ost and she cries to it. i think she mostly likes slower music. music that makes her feel like her soul is leaving her body and ascending to a different plane of existence

mitsuru - classical. rich girl… but i also think the girls would influence her taste to expand more and she’d find herself enjoying the worst songs you’ve ever heard in your life. it’s ok tho since it’s her first time branching out. she’ll grow…

akihiko - whatever’s on the radio, mostly enjoys upbeat faster paced music that can easily hype someone up. he’s kinda that one pic that’s like “Gym Beast Playlist” and the first song is hi high by loona

shinjiro - death metal, old school hip hop. death metal came to me bc i was thinking about casual outfits for shinjiro and i really wanted to put him in a death metal shirt bc of the font lmfaoo. but i prefer more old school hip hop for him and occasionally other things like old school rock music. he hates that new shit

ken - pop, alt/indie. ken is a kid so his taste is just beginning to form. he only knows pop radio. i also think ken’s music taste is music where you’d hear it and be like “god how does anyone like this” but he’s a child so he’s allowed to get away with it. and i say indie bc i also think ken is the type of person to be sad so he listens to more sad music as if it won’t make his mood worse. he goes on youtube and types “sad music playlist” when he’s in a bad mood

im thinking about TV show eddie and how he’s both different from his book counterpart but still similar. cause book eddie is the worst (says daisy would make a good aunt and not a mom). but show eddie is a lot more soft around the edges. but something that bothers me about this is that people are misreading him.

i’ll see people say they wish camilla left billy for eddie and how eddie would’ve worshiped her but that’s not true and even the show says it. like billy says eddie “always wants to be slighted” and you see that as the band deteriorates more and more. like yes, he is into camila (i don’t want to necessarily say love but he does care for her deeply) but i don’t think he’d worship her. like, eddie wanted to be a big rockstar and he WAS! like even warren says that they’re the biggest band in the world and are super rich. like eddie was so caught up with himself and his fued with billy he couldn’t like ENJOY life.

but even after the six breaks up you’d think he’d be happy. like he’s finally free of billy so he can go make the real rock music he wants. except he doesn’t achieve the same the success. and while that is disheartening he is still living as a rock star and making music he wants, yet he’s still miserable, something is always missing.

so back to camila, while i do think he would’ve treated her better than billy did during the aurora album, over all he’d still be upset over something. something wouldn’t be quite right.

like billy literally says he wants to be slighted, he wants something to complain about. so it’s easier for him to blame billy who was mr popular in high school and got the girl eddie had a crush on in childhood and then even after billy leaves the band eddie wants to take over his spot but can’t do they get billy back and then was later upset with the music they were making as it wasn’t rock enough, and then even after the fall out he’s still upset years later. like he always wanted something to blame i feel and i really like that the show added more depth to his hatred and issues with billy but i don’t think he’s now this perfect guy. like if anything he’s giving me nice guy ™️ vibes.

anyway, those are my late night thoughts. ✌️out i’m going to bed now

The realization that Felix could've been in the friend group earlier since college if he was able to come to that party is wild. Who knows the butterfly effect his presence in the group would've had on the whole thing (but that's like an au to this au to think about lol)!

Also Chan foreshadowing that he was gonna hurt Y/n 😩 Self awareness is all he has and no other sense. Managed to even break up with her in a most assholey way. Can't ever trust a guy like that, seemed kinda shady from the start tbh 😒

Early college Felix was such a mess, who knows, he might have made everything worse. But when I create things I love little easter eggs like that. They both ended up missing each other at every opportunity to meet tbh, like it happened several times throughout that entire time frame.

Chan foreshadowing or he just knows deep down he's a piece of shit? Who knows. (I truly don't know, none of the side story went how I originally intended except for the Hyunjin grabbing Y/n's face for hard truth moment parallel)

DLMLU!Chan seems like the type of guy who would have dated a high school freshman as a senior. (He date Y/n as a college freshman as a junior so not too far off)

Also! I saw your other asks and I love them! I just didn't know how comfortable you are with me answering them so I'm leaving them alone for now. But I completely forgot that the second song exists and I'm debating if I should swap it for another song in her playlist.

Y/n was almost in the music department with Chan instead of the art department with Hyunjin so yes, she plays the piano and guitar. She got into both programs but her love for art was stronger. But for the rehearsal dinner, she's just going to sing over like a karaoke track bc I love the trumpets in the song and I highly doubt she was going to hire a band for the rehearsal.
