It was the dreamiest afternoon, a heavy blanket of clouds pushing away the last sunrays of summer as autumn made itself known. As you napped in your crib, Peter and Bucky were enjoying a movie on tv, curled up on the big couch in the living room. Steve had left on an errand to the grocery store, suddenly inspired by the overcast weather to cook a cozy meal for his family. A scented candle on the shelf in the corner filled the room with warmth, and Bucky took deep breaths as he stroked Peter’s hair, filing away this perfect moment in his mind to look back on whenever he needed to remember just how safe his life was now. He tried to ignore the phone buzzing in his pocket, silently cursing whoever was trying to disturb his heaven, but when the notifications continued to flood in, he reluctantly answered the call.
Peter sat up as Bucky maneuvered to retrieve his phone, the sudden movement of his favorite pillow pulling the kiddo from the brink of an unplanned nap. Peter looked up at his Baba as he answered the phone, furrowing his brows as Bucky sighed. On the other end, Steve lightly chided his husband for not answering sooner, before letting him know that he was currently stranded at the store, the family car unresponsive in the parking lot. Bucky reassured Steve that he’d be right there, running a tired hand over his face as he hung up the phone and picked up the baby monitor that showed your nursery. The video showed you still fast asleep in your crib, pacifier half fallen out of your mouth. Mentally calculating the time it would take to reach the store and back, Bucky decided it wasn’t worth disturbing your nap for an errand that would hopefully be over before you even woke up to notice he was gone.
“What’s wrong, Baba?” Peter spoke up. There was anxiety in his voice, but not very much; he could tell it must not be an emergency if Bucky was so calm.
“Daddy’s car broke and I have to go pick him up from the store.” Bucky tried not to sound too annoyed.
“Can I come?” Peter asked eagerly, but Bucky shook his head.
“Not this time, pumpkin. I need you to be a big boy and take care of the house while I’m gone. Don’t answer the door for anyone and try not to wake up your sister, okay baby?”
Peter nodded enthusiastically, thrilled to be assigned a mission - even if that mission was just to stay put on the couch and not get into trouble.
With a kiss to the top of the spider boy’s head, Bucky was out the door, wanting more than anything to get this done as quickly as possible. Peter stared at the door for what felt like ages after it had closed behind his Baba, counting down the minutes until his return. And then he heard your cry from the baby monitor speaker.
Your precious slumber was interrupted, your peaceful dreams morphing into a heart stopping nightmare, almost as if you could sense your Baba’s absence and your Daddy’s distress. Tossing and turning, you ripped your way out of the cocoon of sleep, letting out a choked sob as you desperately tried to rejoin the waking world. You opened your eyes into the darkness, anxiously staring at your nursery door, almost mentally willing it to burst open and your daddies to come rushing in. But when the door finally did open, it was tentative, and the figure you saw illuminated by the hall light was not who you expected.
Peter rushed towards you as soon as he saw your desperate face. He reached through the bars of your crib to hold your hand as he reassured you were safe, big brother was here and he wasn’t gonna let anything hurt you. But it was no use, you just kept thrashing and crying out.
“Daddy! Baba!!” You wailed, needing more than anything just to be wrapped in their big strong arms, protected from anything and everything that could come your way.
Peter crouched down so his face was level with yours, wanting more than anything just to comfort you.
“Daddies aren’t here right now, but it’s okay, I got you!” Peter reassured you, and although you stopped fighting and let your body calm down, your tears still didn’t stop.
“Baba…” You sobbed, your chest heaving up and down with nervous breaths.
“Can I get you out of your crib?” Peter asked, his hand already on the latch.
You nodded and Peter let down the bars of the crib, helping you down onto the carpeted floor. He held your hand all the way as he led you back to the living room, his protective heart breaking as he heard you sob behind him. He brought you to the couch and helped you onto it, making sure you were comfy and stable, knowing you were particularly small at the moment. Peter wrapped you in a plush throw blanket and grabbed the nearest stuffed animal, tucking it into the blanket with you.
“I gotta go to the kitchen, okay?” He asked, and your eyes widened. “Don’t worry, though, I’ll be right back!”
You watched him all the while he zoomed around the corner into the kitchen, never leaving your line of sight as he ran to the fridge and pulled out a premade bottle. Taking the lid off, he put it in the microwave for less than a minute, just enough to bring it around room temperature, and as an added courtesy, he even made sure to open the microwave door before it could beep too loudly.
Just as quickly as he’d rushed into the kitchen, Peter was right back by your side, climbing up onto the couch to join you. He wrapped an arm around your blanketed body, leaning you into him as he brought the lukewarm bottle to your lips. With tears still in your eyes, you drank. The warm milk filling your belly brought your mind into focus, and your breathing steadied with each sip. With the hand that wasn’t already clutched around your stuffie, you reached out to Peter, gripping his pointer finger with your whole hand. The more you calmed down, the more your brother did as well, now confident in his ability to take care of you. You weren’t even halfway through with the bottle when you heard a familiar key in the front door lock.
Your milk drunk eyes flew open, laser focused on the door as it opened to reveal your two favorite people in the whole world. Peter dropped the bottle, but you’d already forgotten about your post-nap snack, your only care in the world was getting into your daddies’ arms as quickly as possible. Your arms reached out, fingers flexing out at Steve and Bucky, desperate for them to finish bringing in the groceries, locking the door, taking off their shoes. It felt like it was taking forever.
“Well look who’s awake!” Steve’s eyes lit up at the sight of you, just about as eager as you were to have you in his arms. He relieved you from Peter’s lap, and you gripped his shirt up in your fists, burying your face into his neck and breathing in his comforting scent. Peter was left to look up at Bucky, studying his face to try and figure out what he was thinking.
“I’m sorry Baba.” He apologized preemptively, just in case Bucky was mad at your nap ending prematurely.
“Sorry about what, kiddo? You didn’t wake her up on purpose, did you?”
Peter shook his head rigorously, hoping to convey to his Baba that he’d never do that.
“Then you have nothing to be sorry for, okay baby boy? In fact, it looks like you did a pretty good job holding down the fort while we were gone. I’m so proud of you.” Bucky said, picking up Peter and joining you and Steve in the kitchen where the ingredients for that night’s special dinner were all spread out on the counter.
“Yea! Luv oo!” You chimed in, and Peter grinned the widest you’d ever seen him.

...TODAY, IN MY RE-READING OF CH 4 OF TRIGUN MAXIMUM VOL 1...
beloved new characters! Vash being adorable!! sadness!!! and even more translation discrepancy shenanigans!!!!
let's jump right in, shall we? ;D
(NOTE: I'm reading the Dark Horse [physical] and the Overhaul [online] translations side-by-side)
ok so in the Fall flashback, immediately after Vash lashes out at Knives when he tries to give him a hand to help him stand, the wording of the two translations is slightly different. on the surface, they basically mean the same thing, but. idk. you be the judge. Dark Horse has Knives saying "...what's your problem? You and I are the only brothers we have." meanwhile, the Overhaul has "What is it with you? You and I are brothers. We only have each other."
so then, Vash is like (I'm quoting the Overhaul here, but the translations are p much the same for this bit) "It's all your fault! Rem... Everyone... You killed them all!" and right here, I'm stricken by the way he's kneeling, tears in his eyes, screaming at Knives...grieving and so angry... 🥺

and here's how Knives replies. imo Dark Horse makes him seem just...bad and chaotic, whereas the Overhaul's translation shows that what Knives claims to be his reasoning for his choices is more pragmatic (in part, anyway).
Vash responds with "you're not human!" which he means in a figurative sense, as in 'cruel; without sympathy, pity, compassion, etc.' - but, unsurprisingly, Knives takes it literally, which is where we get our next notable (imo) translation discrepancy. Dark Horse has Knives saying "Exactly!! Don't ever compare me to those faceless vermin!! Don't ever!!" meanwhile, the Overhaul has "Precisely! Like hell I'll be like them! Don't ever compare me to those vermin! Don't ever! Never again!"
oh, the irony in that extra bit in the Overhaul. "Like hell I'll be like them!" ohhhhh, Knives. bby. literal child. you have no idea. 🫣
boozhoo, brother undertaker!!! 🪶 it's so interesting to think about Indigenous ppl like me in this 'verse. how do we navigate this new world? how do we carry on our traditions? how do those traditions change? in any case, it's comforting to see media in which we endure so far into the future...
aaaaaand Vash and Wolfwood get to bickering like an old married couple again. love that for them~ 😆💕
I. would. totally get a tattoo of this panel. jeez, what a cutie.
and the way Vash gets to crying? about how bad the situation with the Polo family and the Fris family has gotten? after 152 years, despite everything, he's still so soft. as an adult, that really resonates with me 🥹
oof, this line from Wolfwood, though (Overhaul translation, but it's basically the same in Dark Horse): "Even people who would never fight will pick up a gun if their loved ones are killed." if that ain't one of the main theses of Trigun, man...
AND THEN WE MEET BRAD!!!!!! oh, but I have a newfound fondness for him =u=
one interesting thing I'd like to note: in Dark Horse, that lil guy we see with Brad is consistently just called "Sensei" - but in the Overhaul, he's "Doctor". I suspect this might have been to differentiate him from the "Doctor" we meet just before Knives' resurrection in Trigun vol 2. anyway, it makes a lot more sense to me, "Sensei" being called "Doctor"...but to avoid any confusion moving forward (and to avoid spoilers), I'll stick with the way Dark Horse refers to the two.
oh and also, in Dark Horse, Vash refers to the place Brad and Sensei are from as "the city" but in the Overhaul, it's "the colony" 🤔

ANYWAY. this exchange between Brad and Sensei over the next 2 pages rly strikes me. it goes like this in Dark Horse:
BRAD (talking to Vash): "Well, I'm sure two years is nothing to you."
SENSEI: "Stop it, Brad. He's not that kind of human."
BRAD: "Hmph. Human!! Human, you say?"
but in the Overhaul, it goes like this:
BRAD: "Well, I'm sure two years is only like a blink of an eye to you."
SENSEI: "Stop it, Brad. He's not that kind of person."
BRAD: "...hmph. Person... Yeah, right..."
'human' VS 'person' - linguistically speaking, the 'person' translation makes more sense. irl American English speakers don't go around saying "I'm not that kind of human" - it's 'person'.
either way, though, it's another illustration of the kind of reservations some humans might have about Vash...
...but here, what *I* have reservations about is Dark Horse's timeline!
last chapter explicitly takes place in February of 0113. that would make Lost July (which happened on July 21, 0104) nine years ago.
oh, Dark Horse, u so silly~
Dark Horse's translation of those two big speech bubbles is "The only one who stood against him all this time...the one who can't leave, who comes back from the dead, is that gentleman, right there." so. whereas Dark Horse frames the conflict as something solely between Vash and Knives, the Overhaul frames it as Knives against humanity, with Vash as the necessary force that comes between them.
and...oof. "Won't you trust me" gets me every. time. 😭
oh, and earlier in the chapter, Brad mentions he met Vash once when he was 4yo. after the exchange above, we learn it's been 13 years since then, which makes Brad 17yo at present! just another timeline thing I'd like to note =u=
the translations are similar enough here, but...idk, I just want to show them both here, bc either way, it's such an important scene for Wolfwood. you really get a glimpse into how he thinks, how he sees the world - not to mention how, as we've seen before, he truly is a man stuck between a rock and a hard place...
...and then we have Vash's response. in the Overhaul, we see that for him, it's not a matter of indecision or taking too much time deliberating, as Wolfwood seems to imply. for Vash, it's "right here and now, there are lives on the line, so right here and now, I'm gonna do something about it."
and now, we end on a silly note: this little panel on the last page of the chapter always confused me. thanks to the Overhaul, it doesn't anymore 🤣🤣🤣

Kyojuro is definitely a honeycomb, always a sweet man. Full of energy and optimistic, just like the sun, which illuminates everything around it along with the warmth that warms and brings life. But... don't be fooled. Kyojuro would not allow anyone to take advantage of the beautiful personality he possesses.
The person he chose to his life is you.
About what you are, everything in the flaming eyes of the pillar is simply adorable.
Kyojuro would be very disappointed, actually very angry, if someone tried to hurt you, in any way, can be, talking about your body or anything of that nature, he for sure take all the pain, and will attribute any offenses to himself, never forgiving that someone.
I believe that Rengoku could go far for the one he loves, after all he has passion in everything he does, since the pair he chose for life is suffering anyway, he will take steps to intervene, and... I give you my word, it won't end well for the one who dare do such evil thing...whoever has dealt you, will dive into regret.
Loud and clear words would let the abuser know who he is dealing with. In such situation, Kyojuro would transform from honey dripping across the amber glow, to a menacing lion, protecting the territory he's conquered with his claws and teeth. He can be fearsome sometimes, but never towards you.
What if it got you down by sad episodes as these, he gonna take the lead to put you up.
Sentences like: "- Honey, you don't have to take an idiot's words into consideration, you are so intelligentto this..." Would come out of his gentle lips to cheer you up. You can feel by his tone and tenderness, all the support he could give you in every way possible, you would be the most spoiled girlfriend in the world, seriously. Man you can't with him, shopping, flowers, gifts all over the place, everything you look at, everything you touch is yours. Don't even consider touch your own money, he will be offended. No, no, no... he is a gentleman, don't you dare do such a thing y/n!
The many affectionate names he came up with surprise you, each day. "Princess, doll, pearl, precious, flower, angel...etc...etc...and etc"...
Kyojuro showers you with attention whenever he can between his missions.
He loves dragging you to picnics in the afternoon, it's no secret that our flame boy loves to eat, he wouldn't mind sharing this passion with you. After all, he hears from everyone that he has a big appetite, but with you it's different, it's natural.
Kyojuro would take you for walks with his brother Senjuro, as to him, you are part of his life now, part of the family he wants to keep and build.
Festivals are always part of your schedule together, where you enjoy the scenery around. Its always beautiful, but you are the icing on the cake.
Moments like this, it would be common for you to feel loving hugs, either from behind, where he would use the enormous strength he has to squeeze you, this is the advantage of having a chubby body, he delights in the delicious sensation you bring as he hugs you, or whether holding hands while looking into your eyes, he alwaysget lost on them.
He is so generous in everything, letting all the affection he is capable of feeling for someone overflow like a waterfall.

I just really love how you were able to craft a story with only dialogue and as a reader, we have to connect the dots by ourselves. Anyways, I’ve been nerding out about the James Webb photos. So fucking cool. I was word vomiting about it to my coworkers.
Also wanted to congratulate you on your job. I’m glad your effort was rewarded in the end 💕. Job hunting fucking sucks.
And omg el, I’m so happy rn. I went out with coworkers the other day. And I have plans to go out with another one soon. And two of my coworkers told me they smile a lot when we work together 🥺. And this one supervisor at the store I trained at says hello and talks to me when he sees me. Like I’ve always convinced myself I’m super unlikeable, so it’s really insane to me this is all happening. But I’m happy I’m being more social because I used to be cripplingly shy.
I was also thinking of a Haikyuu barista au. I was salivating thinking about sakusa in an all black outfit with the red apron. Can u imagine just watching him make drinks. Beautiful. Me and atsumu would make him make tiktoks with us all the time. Capitalize on his good looks.
And now I like black cold brews. Which I totally thought would never happen because I don’t like coffee much lol. I also like iced quad espressos with soy milk. I still like the sweet drinks, but I’m trying to limit the sugar I’m having lul. Fr you can have up to five drinks a shift, it’s insane. I try to cap it at two or three lol.
But el, you should try a matcha frappe made with heavy cream(but the default milk is fine too) sub peppermint syrup with frappe chips. It tastes like mint chocolate chip ice cream 🤤. My one coworker gets it with extra ice so she eats it with a spoon. I get it every once and awhile, because it’s quite indulgent lol.

omg i’ve been wanting to reread it these days... but i think a moment that really stuck out to me is when the girls were stuck together in that maze-like area with the dragon, and had to work together for the first time to escape. it was towards the very beginning of the series & i think it was such a good study of and introduction to all of their goals, personalities, and styles of magic, & properly cemented each of them as distinctly lovable characters in my mind. it’s so nice when they’re made to work together, as they don’t always get along or agree, but they always have each other’s best interests at heart & make sure they get the job done! i love them! 🥺 also i really like the scenes set in nolnoa’s magic supply shop because they’re always drawn SO beautifully... u can practically smell the nostalgic, dusty scent of the place, and sense the wonderfully cramped rooms, filled with strange, interesting goodies ❣️ as for characters... i really really really love all 4 of the apprentices. i think i can see a little bit of myself in all of them (esp. coco & tetia) and u can’t help but care for them deeply! i adore how coco and tetia’s eagerness and enthusiasm balance out agathe and richeh’s cynicism and reticence, respectively, though of course coco and tetia are perfectly capable of their own brands of negativity & agathe and richeh are not immune to childish joy. qifrey is wonderful, too... love a character who’s kind and empathetic and clever but is also a little um shady (to put it lightly) and isn’t always the most forthcoming or honest or lawful. olruggio’s also a very good guy... he’s an excellent grounding force for this little team, even if he feigns aloofness and his facial hair is godawful 😭 beyond the main characters, i think that the side & background characters are also fleshed out well & compelling. alaira my wife... tartah who tries so hard... poor euini... even the knights moralis, whose designs are incredible... anyway! i’ve rambled quite a bit & i definitely overused the word ‘love’ here but what can i say! i love this manga so so much! 🤧💝🌟

Ok sooo I am an athlete, I play indoor and beach volleyball, I just love sports there’s so many more I want to try but I’m full committed to vb rn 😪 anyways I’m also very into art and music and I do like to sing, rap and dance. A lot of my friends think I’m talented and know how to do everything 🤨 they don’t know me wel then ig 🙄 and as you could prob already tell I’m super sarcastic and I like to mess around with people. I get annoyed and irritated way to easily put depending on who it is I can be patient. My friends kinda just learned to be patient with me since I’m always annoyed or angry. Uhh I really like food and sleeping and obv volleyball. I think of volleyball as my first love or real boyfriend, it’s my everything 😩 3 words u would describe myself as would be athletic, ambitious and clumsy(ish) I’m also very observant and usually always thinking and observing people. Ik it sounds weird but I do zone out a lot and I’m usually thinking abt something I want to accomplish or something I have observed about someone or something. Idk I’m very goal orientated as well. Ok imma sum it up by describing my appearance. I’m 5’2 I’m pretty muscular but petite at the same time, personally I think I have a great style. My hair is a faded outgrown black with a faded pink under dyed part. I’m literally a mutt and mixed with a bunch of things so I have green eyes and tan skin andddd yeah that’s it!
