Miracle Creek was one of those books that tempted me from the very moment I read the synopsis. This novel follows a group of people in a small town in Virginia who are all part of a new treatment in a hyperbaric chamber which claims to treat conditions like autism and infertility. ⁣ ⁣ Written from several points of view, the story follows a horrific explosion in the chamber that kills some and maims others for life, both psychologically and physically. The question is, who set the fire? Is it part of an insurance scam by the owners? A protester warning of the dangers of the new technology? Moment by moment, we start to unravel the mystery of what happened that evening and it turns out that more than one individual has skeletons in their closet. ⁣ ⁣ With that intriguing storyline I couldn’t fail to want to read this book very badly! Lucky for me, my bestie @keeperofpages wanted to read it too so we had a lovely time buddy reading and discussing it. The novel was clever in the way it dissected the plot and as I’m a fan of multiple POV’s, I was delighted that Angie Kim used this method to tell the story. ⁣ ⁣ It was quite obvious to both myself and Janel that Kim has had experience in the courtroom and certainly she tells us all about that in the author’s note at the end of my edition. Because of this, there were times when the narrative had less emotion to it than I was expecting. Saying that though, this was primarily evident in the courtroom scenes. In that kind of environment, it is obvious that there had to be an element of detachment. Miracle Creek is the excellent debut from Angie Kim. “A fire kills two people and seriously injures others. A mom is on trial for murder. And people lie...So many lies.” Kim uses her own experiences to bring her characters to life. There are some you will yell “I think I’ll sneak some smokes in the woods with a teenage girl” 🤦🏼‍♂️ Any parent knows how tough the early years are - how sleep deprivation makes us cranky. But Kim shows us the life that a parent of special needs child has and what that means. The story revolves around the trial and a mother’s guilt. You probably won’t guess the actual culprit. A bit of a sad ending for me. I gave in to the hype. Miracle Creek turned out to be my favorite kind of mystery novel. It’s far more than a puzzle to solve; the mystery is filled with fleshed out, morally gray characters and loads of food for thought. 💙💙💙💙💙

When you need a Miracle

A disastrous event – deliberately caused – but by whom?

So there is a trial as the detectives think they know the answer to the question, and the story covers this trial as they try to establish the truth of the arson and thus murder.

But as the trial progresses, what started out as a small white innocuous lie seems to be just one lie among many, by many.

The untruths start spilling out and what seems obvious starts to become a lie too. And the little white lies become big and important.

I like the twist of using Korean immigrants and allowing their traditions to influence their behaviour in this story.

And note, all the treatments Elizabeth uses, including HBOT, seem to be at least partially recognised as potential ‘cures’ or assistance in alleviating autism. None of course have passed clinical trials so they are difficult to assess their outcomes, especially as many are used alongside each other.

Note that the author has used HBOT herself and is a trial lawyer and a Korean immigrant.
