★ Would you visit parallel universe? New filter, eh, eh? We’ll see if I stick with this one but I’m digging it for now. The idea of parallel universes fascinates me, but I think I’d better stick to only exploring them in books. I’d definitely mess something up otherwise 🤣 Today I am loving on the naked hardcovers of @illumicrate’s Daughter of Smoke and Bone set. It’s a favorite series of mine featuring a parallel universe. I also love when quotes from the book are included decoratively on the book itself. And that’s another reason why I’m excited to share Illumicrate’s May book with you all too. 👀 If you’re new to Illumicrate, you can use code LIBRARY5 to save on 3&6 month subs! ★ CURRENTLY //     📖 Glow by Raven Kennedy (eARC) 🎧 Breath of Fire by Amanda Bouchet (starting tonight!) 🎮 Dragon Age: Origins & AC: Valhalla ★ HASHTAGS //     #bookstagram #fantasybooks #bookseverywhere #booknerd #bookishlife #bookaholic #bookhoarder #bookworm #booklover #bookstagrammer #booklove #bookcommunity #bookobsessed #bookaddict #booksbooksbooks #illumicrate #illumicratedosab #lainitaylor #daughterofsmokeandbone #hodderandstoughton #thenovl https://www.instagram.com/p/CeouvwBvQQK/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

'The Book of Two Ways' by Jodi Picoult
Tumblr media
The Book of Two Ways seamlessly blends Egyptology, physics, end of life care, death and the afterlife with deeply moving explorations of emotional connections and complicated, life-changing decisions, through immersive romantic and platonic relationships and shifting moral boundaries, all in a wonderfully expansive and time-shifting way - 5/5.
I just couldn’t put this down and found myself repeatedly thinking about it when I managed to tear myself away from the pages.
This is my first Jodi Picoult read and I don’t really know what took me so long. Having just finished my Masters degree in archaeology the month before reading this, both the thematic content of the book and the timing of me picking it up could not have been more perfect. I’ve seen some reviews speaking negatively about the more heavily ‘academic’ nature of the Egyptology/archaeology themes, but I’d advise anyone to read this book regardless because it’s so utterly worth it in a myriad of ways and Egyptology feels like the red thread that ties the entire book together.
Picoult’s character development is incredible - her writing made each of the small cast of character’s personalities, quirks, strengths and weaknesses shine and I really felt for each and every one of them in each version. The sections related to grief and the fear and/or acceptance of death really gripped me, as the one experience each and every one of us as human beings share, no matter our circumstances.
It takes a lot for a book to truly make you feel something, like really deeply honestly feel-it-in-the-gut feel something, but this succeeded 100% for me. I just couldn’t recommend this book enough.

When you have so many books to choose from, gathered from years of spending time in charity shops, bargain book stores and the like, it’s hard to know what to read and when. For me, I have to make lists, organise my reading if you will and one the ways I manage that is by having ‘Seasonal Reading Lists’. This Summer, I have collected together, everything I have by the long forgotten author ‘Cecil Roberts’, who despite being a prolific writer, is practically unknown today. His style does seem a little dated, but the content, particularly of what I call his travel adventures, still holds up.
He’s worth seeking out, and spending some time with, if you are prepared to go with the flow of his writing style, which is very 1950′s/60′s.

Back in September on a rainy day in Birmingham, I photographed disaster expert Lucy Easthope for her new book “When The Dust Settles.”
As one of the world's leading experts on disaster she has been at the centre of the most seismic events of the last few decades - advising on everything from the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami to the 7/7 bombings, the Salisbury poisonings, the Grenfell fire and the Covid-19 pandemic.
She has travelled across the world in this unusual role, seeing the very worst that people have to face, and finding that even the most extreme of situations, we find the very best of humanity. In her moving memoir she reveals what happens in the aftermath. She takes us behind the police tape to scenes of destruction and chaos, introducing us to victims and their families, but also to the government briefing rooms and bunkers, where confusion and stale biscuits can reign supreme. With wisdom, resilience and candour When the Dust Settles looks back at a life spent on the edges of disaster and shows us that where there is terrible tragedy there is also great hope and that humanity and humour can - and must - still be found on the darkest of days.
The book is out now and is published by Hodder & Stoughton. It was such a pleasure and I cannot wait to read the book!

Starry Skies in Ferry Lane Market by Nicola May (Ferry Lane Market #2)
My Review (5*) Ferry Market Lane is becoming a favourite series as it’s riveting and excellent. The first book was excellent but this one is even better: life affirming, heart-warming and heart wrenching at times. It’s a multi-layered story and you can read it as a sweet romantic story or as the story of a woman and her fight to overcome difficulties and find happiness. As there’re multiple layer it will up to you to read and follow the part that talks to your emotions. There’s a strong sense of community but the author let us see glimpse of the darker side of these community: drugs, toxic relationships, broken families. Star, the MC, is a complex and interesting character: she’s resilient, strong, generous but there’s also a softer side. She’s faulted but there’s also a strong sense of integrity and resilience, she’s a fighter who tries to do her best for her daughter and to achieve her goals. The author did an excellent job in developing this character. The entire cast of characters is fleshed out and realistic. The romantic part is sweet and I liked how it plays a part in the plot but it’s not the focal point. I love how the author delivers a heart-warming story without sugar coating reality and doing an excellent job in describing the emotions and writing realistic dialogues. I read it in one sitting as I couldn’t put it, I wanted to know what was going to happen and enjoy the atmosphere of Ferry Lane Market. The author is an excellent storyteller and I loved how she kept my attention till the end. This series is strongly recommended, and it improves with each story. Many thanks to Hodder & Stoughton, Rachel's Random Resources, and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
Synopsis: 'Full of heart, hope, friendship, family and laughter, and a plot with a mystery gagging to be solved' Kim Nash on Welcome to Ferry Lane Market
When Star Bligh got pregnant at the age of sixteen, she thought her life was over. Now thirty-three, mother to Skye and owner of the successful jewellery stall in Ferry Lane Market in Hartmouth, Cornwall, she wouldn't change a thing about it. Well, maybe one. A few months ago she fell hard for American visitor Jack, but then he left without even saying goodbye and ever since she has struggled to get him out of her head. Until the handsome, roguish Conor turns up and sweeps her off her feet. But then one day, Star is shocked to bump into Jack. He's back in Hartmouth to tell her why he left - but is she ready to listen? As things get more complicated with her love life, another revelation threatens to turn the lovely world she has built for her and Skye upside down. But could this be the one thing that will make it complete?

A Man Call Ove, Fredrick Blackman
Ove - Widower, Grumpy, Nightmare Neighbour. Is he only the labels that people would use to describe him or beneath it all is there something more, a lot more?
A sad but heartwarming story of going beyond your initial impressions of a person which shows that you never know what someone is going through and how you can change the course of their life without even knowing it.
Let us know your thoughts on the book below 👇🏾

I received e-copy of this book via NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review. Many thanks to @hodderbooks @hodderstoughton #NetGalley.  Six Crimson Cranes (Six Crimson Cranes #1) by Elizabeth Lim @elimpix Publication Date : July 8th 2021 Publisher : #HodderandStoughton Genre : Fantasy / YA Pages : 464 Ratings: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Six Crimson Cranes was my most anticipated book of the year and like other books I read by Elizabeth Lim, this didn’t disappoint me. It was refreshing, magical, and epic YA fantasy filled with legends, curse, and adventure. It was fantastic YA retelling and mythical fantasy that revolved around Princess Shiori and her six brothers turned into Crane trying to break their curse and save their kingdom. The story was about family, friendship, love, betrayals, trust, magic, power, greed, resilience and courage. Plot was full of curse, magic, adventure, politics and secrets. First half of the book was super-fast paced with introduction to characters, world, curse and it’s effect, and characters trying to find a way to lift it. While the second half was about romance and revelations. All characters were amazing and interesting. Family dynamic was my favourite aspect. Loved Shiori and Takkan. World was best part of the book. It was amazing the way author seamlessly woven retellings of Grimm’s The Six Swans/Andersen’s The Wild Swans with East and West Asian folklores. I highly recommend this if you like, Hidden identity Forbidden magic Curses and journey to lift them Dragons Intriguing world and characters Great family dynamic Arranged marriage trope Foody Main Character QOTD: Which recent retelling you enjoy most?
