No pressure nor ill will, but as someone who has had past bad experiences with vinesauce fanartists, I'd like to know if you could possibly talk about your intent when you draw vinesauce art in such niche themes, large quantities, as well as basically drawing gore of real people. I like your art in general, but with some VS art, I don't know how to feel about it, due to the lack of insight to the author's intent, so that is all I'd like to have clarified, if possible.

im going to reply to this because you asked nicely, otherwise i wouldnt and ill say why at the end

i dont know what exactly falls in "niche theme", but these are things you will find not just in my VS art but in any kind of art i do: crossovers (vocaloid songs), parodies (shared line with crossovers), violent acts put on a comedic spotlight or in the reverse case, situations that are violent in nature but presented as comedic put through a more realistically violent light (literally see gen loss vinny anvil scene)

saying "basically drawing gore of real people" is strange, while i wont deny the definiton of gore applies to something as "blood covered person", its usually a term thats always been reserved and used for way more lethal things, like dismembering and maiming. with subjects and media that doesnt have an "established limit of how much you can put someone in a violent situation", ill top it to just drawing things like what i first mentioned, how does this judgement apply to what i draw then? let's use vlinny which seems like a good example with lots of fandom history too:

(taken from his vinesauce wiki page) "his clone flesh will dissolve", while this isnt a vinesauce licensed trademarked (tm) description of a character, but rather a fanmade one, it still applies to what makes his basis, so, therefore: drawing vlinny with melting skin is okay because this is literally something that has been established by the person who came up with it, HOWEVER, anything farther or more violent than that while could still be true to the nature of the character, is something id preferably not to draw because it would cross the boundary of what has been visibly established by the source. this would be the same as me drawing joel ripping apart a demon from doom

BUT WAIT, what about the "hereditary" drawings? ill hand you the benefit of doubt and worry for these ones, because while they are a parody of one of the main characters (dont look this up if you dont want spoilers), i cant just draw a streamer dismembered and say "well duh its okay cuz its a parody", thats not how anyone's ideals should work, but i bring up the point again of limiting myself to what i consider is fair game established by either the source or general consensus, and i have yet to see people telling me OR others leaving commentary questioning stuff like blood

the type of art i make of VS is not a specific type of art id make only of this, but rather a type of style i already do by default and just apply to the topic im fixated on at the moment, if its something that is, like i already said, considered okay to do

its obviously a very blurred line what is the "limit" and how much you can stretch it, since none of the streamers are actors in a movie full of action, or characters in a videogame put in a fantasy setting, so unless its a "character" (vlinny, genloss vinny, joel as doom) my limit will always be "just cover the guy in ketchup" because this is, to me, the okay-est limit that doesnt cross the line to "now this is just getting borderline weird", im sure for someone else the line could be the guy having a small cut in their hand, and to someone else the line could be the guy being amputated completely (if this is your line get away from me, seriously)

now, at the end, why wouldnt i have replied to this if it wasnt asked nicely? while i dont think its a bad thing to ask (i will always be very open to discussion of my art) and i dont know how long you have been here and i dont expect you to tell me, i think if you have been around long enough or did a bit of research on my socials, you can see i hate a specific type of fan of media, especially media which involves irl people, and while it isnt a catch-all to say "hey im not a weirdo!", i think it helps make clear and establish that i dont have weirdo intentions at the very least. i am sorry that you have had bad experiences with fanartists of the community in the past, i cannot say because i hadnt been there (as a fanartist at least), so i cant blame you for being wary of what you might see drawn by me, and i am glad that despite these bad experiences you could have a grounded way to ask me instead of just accusing me, so that i really appreciate. id like to think i have made my "author's intent" clear with this reply, i have tried to be as descriptive yet clear as possible, but with some people you might not be able to ever clear your mind on what their intent is, and this is just my opinion but you wont be able to go knocking on every person's door asking if they are normal or not, and id never force someone to look at my art, if they dont like it or have stopped liking it, it is absolutely okay and its their right to curate their own online experience however they like, as i have curated mine

i also feel like this is something other people might have going around in their minds, but wont ask or dont want to ask, for whatever reason, and i dont think its something id suddenly begin randomly typing about one day. especially now that id like to be less talkative in social media for personal reasons

again, i hope this is clear enough, whether you keep looking at my art or not, i again appreciate that you enjoy or enjoyed it and that you could ask this in a grounded way

(edit) something i forgot to clarify, regarding why i draw such large quantities of art: i draw very fast so i can draw a lot, and VS is my current fixation, that's about it. a lot of the art you see posted regarding that is usually warmups prior to paid or personal work

ATTENTION TADC FANS!

youve all been waiting, and im finally taking requests for TADC again! apologies for the sudden shut down and dismissal of the requests, but it was truly getting to a point where i was beginning to hit the beginning stages of a burnout; and in order to prevent myself from resenting the media or growing tired of it, i had to take a break.. but we're back! with a few news rules that i urge you guys look into since things are going to be slightly different this time around (not much, only one real rule is added, but still!)

As per usual for these posts, im linking my pinned that has most of the rules that generally apply to this blog, really these posts are just for me to announce that im taking stuff for a fandom, you know?

if youre not new around here, though, you will notice a note within the "i will write section", which is that new rule i mentioned above the cut!

however for those who cannot access the link for whatever reason, here is a summarized list of rules n stuff

Basic rules and boundaries:

all requests must be sent in through the inbox. any requests submitted via comments or dms will not be answered, period. i prefer the inbox because its all in one place and easier for me to keep track of things. dms feel invasive and make me feel pressured, and comments can be lost easily. as well as this, with asks i have the request right there so i dont have to dip back and forth for details on what you want

no spamming, please! while i am deciding to keep anon on i can tell when its different requestors asking for the same thing by chance, and when its the same person sending in the same thing. you will receive a warning once (this alone counts as one so technically you get two), after that your request will be denied flat out

as of 12/14/2023, i am not taking oc readers or readers based off of canon characters. while i did canon characters before, i do not have the means or energy to comb through many character wikis for every request. i do intend on opening character based readers eventually, but as of now it is not possible or efficient. you CAN ask for specific traits or personalities, though, thats still allowed

the new rule i mentioned: the new maximum number of characters you can ask for per request is 4-5. before i didnt see much point in limiting TADC since its just 7 characters but i found that most people asked for full casts, but most requests didnt spark any real ideas for every character; thus really feeding into that burnout i mentioned. any requests failing to follow this rule will be put in the wheel (wheel will have the characters names and it will choose who will be written for the request)

i can deny your request for any reason, usually though it will be for discomfort or for being in violation of the admins rules/falls into what he wont write

What I will Write:

fluff and angst! as well as general headcannons! scenarios are allowed too!

poly, platonic, romantic, ect is fine! any characteristics for the reader are usually fine (ex. child!reader, artist!reader, ectect, obviously for stuff like kid readers it will automatically be platonic)

really most things are fine, if theres anything that makes the admin uncomfortable, he will communicate it!

while technically i do write for it, please be mindful when asking for requests that tackle heavier topics (abvse, self h4rm, ect) and will be handled on a case by case basis rather than being set to a solid standard, as well as taking the admins current mental state into consideration when handling these requests

What I WONT Write:

NSFW or NSFW adjacent requests. no smut, no kinks. i have had people try to sneak kinks past me by trying to mess with wording or by trying to justify it by saying it was intended to be fluff. i do not kink shame, but that wont be tolerated here

no yandere stuff, admin isnt really comfy with it. theres a difference between writing characters that can be very jealous and writing something that is extremely unhealthy and to admins knowledge, demonizes those with mental disorders

as mentioned above, heavier topics will be taken with a case by case basis; however if youre asking for things like abvsive!jax x reader or jax walking in on reader SHing then its a hard no. active stuff will not be written here, however a character who has gone through that in the past is an entirely different story

full on fanfics; outside of special occasion, the admin only writes short little paragraphs and stuff for posts

Hello! Yes! I did make this post, it was an answer to another ask and I. Also cannot find it because tumblr’s search feature is god awful so I’m just going to. Repeat myself here. The original post was kind of messy anyway so here we go

Dragon Age Half-Elf Genetics Headcanon (aka: I rewrite half elf genetics in dragon age to be canon compliant in a way I don’t hate)

In Dragon Age, half elves work differently than they do in most other fantasy works that use elves and humans in that they do not exist. There are no half elves in the Dragon Age world, any elf/human hybrid comes out looking entirely human and that’s it

I, and from what I can tell the majority of the Dragon Age fandom, are not a fan of this. It’s boring, uncreative, and very obviously just there to explain how Alistair can have an elven mother despite not looking elven at all. In my opinion it’s fine on an individual basis, maybe with Alistair he does just look more human, but EVERY half-elf just looks human? Don’t like that

BUT

Supposedly, this is because elves are very magical and special and humans are not. So, because of this, when elven blood meets human blood the human blood cancels it out entirely, kind of like dousing a fire. To which I say…I still don’t like it but it’s better than “human genetics are just SO DOMINANT they EAT the elven genetics forever” throwing in a magical element at least gives us more to work with, but I still don’t like the idea that human/elf hybrids are literally always human

So. Here’s my solution

Half elves, in the traditional sense, still do not exist. The child will always look entirely human, or, more rarely, entirely elven.

See, when an elf and a human mate, and the child is born looking human, that elven blood is not gone, just dormant. Elven blood can lie dormant in a bloodline for generations before being “awoken.” This “awakening” is done in two ways: when it makes contact with more elven blood, or, the parent is exposed to strong magic

Most commonly, the blood is awoken by making contact with elven blood, usually when an elf-blooded human has a child with a full elf. This is what happens in the case of my Hawke as I like to believe the Hawkes have elven blood lying dormant somewhere in their linage. When my Hawke has a child with Fenris, that child is then born an elf to the surprise of everyone involved. It's not an unpleasant surprise just a "Huh, well that's weird"

But two elf-blooded human parents can still have an elven child. This happens to Miris, my secondary inquisitor, she was born an elf to two noble humans and abandoned near the Lavellan clan for it, claiming later the child died during birth. (unbeknownst to both her and the clan, they all assume her birth parents were city elves that could not care for her)

Unfortunately, that reaction is not an uncommon one, and that combined with the rarity of its occurrence means it’s practically unknown that this is possible

Elven blood being awoken from magical exposure is even more rare, but, surprisingly, it is better known. In fact it’s a very closely guarded secret by the Chantry.

It has been known to happen in circles. In the already undesirable case of a mage falling pregnant, there is a chance the child could be born an elf. It still is not a common occurrence in those births, but it has happened enough for the Chantry to grow paranoid at the possibility whenever its reported a mage is pregnant. The stronger the magical talent of the mage, the higher the chance. It's part of the reason accidental babies are taken from their mage mothers so quickly, the Chantry doesn't want them to realize their child is an elf.

What happens to those babies? It's... unknown. Most likely they are put in an alienage orphanage, or abandoned to the Dalish, though the truth may be darker.

There have also been cases of Templars having elven babies, which are also covered up by the Chantry. What happens to those children is up to their families discretion, the Chantry claims to have no involvement there at all.

Why does the Chantry do this? Because they don't know why it happens, or what it means for the elven race they've spent so long oppressing, and that scares them. They can't predict what would happen if this knowledge was made public, but they are too afraid of the possibility itself to risk the secret leaving their walls.

So that's the headcanon! I like it. I still like regular D&D style half-elves as well, this isn't meant to really be THE solution, just one possible interpretation. I might better tag this post so it doesn't get eaten by the search feature again...

i see people talk about "low support needs" autistics all the time but ive never seen any actual agreement on who falls under that category and im not really comfortable with how willing everyone is to assign that label to strangers on the internet.

ive had a lot of people tell me im obviously low support needs because im not diagnosed, but the reason im not diagnosed is because of medical discrimination. my results were "an autism diagnosis would be applicable for how you scored but we think you lied about your symptoms so we arent diagnosing you."

and ive had people argue that im obviously low support needs because i dont have a caregiver but i dont have a caregiver because im not diagnosed because of medical discrimination? i am still totally reliant on my loved ones for survival. i just dont have an actual official caregiver because i am being severely medically neglected.

it just feels like the conversation around autism is being dominated exclusively by heavily medicalized autistic people and that scares me because some of the most vulnerable autistic people are those who never get diagnosed because of medical discrimination.

and like. the way everyone talks about masking makes me uncomfortable because everyone acts like they all know what "masking" is but everything i hear about it makes me more confused and upset. people keep talking about it like its some special ability that makes you less vulnerable and that makes me feel like i cant possibly be masking then because i am not less vulnerable.

i just. i have brain damage and supposedly "mid/high" support needs autistics on here keep literally calling me retarded because i dont agree with them calling me "low support needs" and so im just. wary of treating these labels as gospel.

it feels like there is literally no room in the autism community for those of us who are anti-psych because of trauma with the medical system. i dont even want a diagnosis anymore, theyre going to use it to strip away my autonomy even more. and that makes me too scared to feel safe around other autistic people.

i want to keep following you but im starting to not feel safe because you say a lot of the same things as the people who mock me for not wanting to be called "low support needs" when im. literally not?

I'm not sure how to answer this ask or even if I should answer this ask. But I'll answer it anyways.

Support needs and levels (depending where you are) for autism specifically, are usually determined by professionals. Not from the individual. There is no set standard across the globe for diagnosing these and it is one of the things a lot of us autistics find very frustrating. These can fluctuate over your life time but not on a daily basis. In the sense that general support needs for everyone can fluctuate on a daily basis, but autism support needs/levels aren't based on that.

I do know that you can use support need labels for other disabilities too. But that's not something I'm too knowledgable on to speak on.

Masking is essentially just your ability to fit in, to camouflage, to appear socially appropriate. It usually invloves holding back stimming, using scripting for conversations, trying to make eye contact, matching facial and body expressions, matching tone of voice appropriately to the conversation, trying to match emotions appropriately to the situation like laughing when others laugh. It's literally about appearing socially appropriate whilst holding back the things we naturally do that aren't considered "appropriate".

A caregiver does not have to be someone that is paid to care for you. A caregiver in a lot of cases can also just be a loved one like a parent. For example, my mum takes me to my appointments, she drives me other places like shops or outings, she speaks up on my behalf when I can't speak or when I don't unerstand things, she is an authority on all my accounts so she can deal with the parts I find difficult, she helps me fill out forms, etc.. She is considered a caregiver and does not get paid for it. So I'm not quite sure what you're talking about there.

You mention that you have brain damage? Is that diagnosed? Brain damage can look a lot like autism but not be autism. Sometimes autism can be misdiagnosed when it's actually brain damage (have a person in my life who has this issue currently). And sure you can have both. But I mention it, because if the kind you have has the ability to mimic autism symptoms and you're already diagnosed with that, can you not get help with some of that at least? This also is included in support needs for disability too? Bcus it's still a disability? I'm not entirely sure on how the processes work around that so my questions here are genuine.

A lot of the autism community is dominated by the voices of lower support needs autistics. The kind of autistics who don't believe autism is a disorder, that it's only a difference. Who think that only societal accommodations are what we need. Who don't believe in severity. Who want to de-medicalise autism. Who are heavily spreading around misinformation. Who are literally biting themselves in their own butts due to this.

And then higher support needs autistics have to step up to try and set things right. A lot of us aren't one model over the others (like social vs medical). A lot of us believe many models need to work together in tandem to help autistics get the best kinds of supports and treatments we need. But we still need the medical model in this. We can't scrap one model over another.

A lot of higher support needs autistics are CONSTANTLY fighting for lower support needs autistics. Who are constantly saying that they ALSO NEED help and support. That they deserve to have that help and support. They're constantly reminding lower support needs autistics that they will still have struggles and that's okay. But it is so important to also acknowledge that there is a spectrum and there is severity in the spectrum where some autistics will need far more support and to a greater extent than other autistics (for autism alone even), and that's also okay.

You say that the conversation around autism is "dominated by heavily medicalized autistic people". But it's not? What you're seeing is autistics trying to speak up for ourselves because there's a big portion of the community that is causing more harm than good.

And heavily medicalised autistics? Are you referring to those who didn't have a choice in diagnosis? Those of us who had no choice but to get diagnosis because if we didn't we'd be far worse off? Those of us who are forced to give up some of our autonomy or rights due to the accommodations and supports a diagnosis gives far outweighing the cons of diagnosis?

And this isn't to invalidate those who are really struggling to get diagnosis. That is a whole thing a lot of us want fixed as well. A lot of us want easier and cheaper access to diagnosis. Easier and cheaper access to accommodations and support. We want standardised testing across the world and we want professionals to be up to date and properly trained. Most of us acknolwedge that these things are a big problem.

And if this ask is more in reference from that post I made about masking? I like to make note of struggles that lower support needs autistics can also face. As it is so incredibly important to know that they are still seen, that their struggles are valid, and that there's nothing wrong with them just because some online autistics are trying to push them out of their level/support needs.

I'm literally not claiming the support needs or levels of others? Or at least I don't think I am? So I'm not even sure what this ask is about. All I want is for others to know that they're not broken or invisible and that there struggles are valid even within the support needs/levels they have. That's literally not a bad thing?

I hope this makes sense. I know sometimes I can get all my thoughts muddled up or I might not say something the way I mean.

IBO reference notes on . . . Kudelia's decisions

Right then. This essay was prompted by various criticisms of Iron-Blooded Orphans that bug me purely by being centred on what I find one of the most interesting things the show does. Obviously, other interpretations are available, but this is where I settled after watching. As usual, spoilers (mainly Season 1, some Season 2 and final ending stuff).

Kudelia Aina Bernstein is the daughter of the governor of the Chryse region of Mars, a colony operated by the Arbrau political bloc (a merger of Canada and Russia, yes really). Like all Martian colonies, Chryse is suffering from neglect and abuse by its parent state, leading to poverty, violence and general misery for its inhabitants. Being a decent sort (thanks in large part to straying beyond the confines of her parents' estate and seeing the real Mars for herself), Kudelia sets out to right this wrong by persuading Arbrau to deregulate the sale of 'half-metal', Chryse's main export, thus bringing more income to the region that will – hopefully – raise everyone's quality of life.

There are a few things to note from the get-go. First, 'deregulate exports' is not exactly the stuff of revolutions. Kudelia is shown addressing an assembly of people who want Mars to be free (or at least freer) of Earth's rule, but she doesn't advocate for openly fighting the central authority. She just wants to negotiate for better conditions. Luckily for her, Prime Minister Makanai of Arbrau is inclined to listen, so it's an aim that appears within reach, if she can hold a meeting with him.

Second, we quickly learn the Martian independence movement in general and Kudelia in particular have some wealthy backers. Enter Nobliss Gordon, a businessman who has been generous to the cause. Now Nobliss is perhaps the most obviously evil-coded character you could imagine, which tracks perfectly with the later revelation he's an arms-dealer. And this immediately raises important questions about what kind of people are calling for independence. Think again about Kudelia's goal here: deregulation of half-metal exports will first and foremost help the people who own the mining business, with any benefit to the average Chryse citizen depending on trickle-down economics (pause for laughter). Those who stand to gain most immediately are those who already own the means of production: those in Nobliss' class – and, importantly, in Kudelia's.

I don't mean to imply any insincerity on Kudelia's part. She genuinely wants to see the lives of Chryse's citizens improved. It's an honest motive that only grows stronger the more she learns what it's actually like for those people on a day-to-day basis. But by dint of who she is in her society, she seems predisposed to look for solutions among those who already hold influence, and there's a degree to which she isn't wrong to do so. Men like Nobliss are the movers and shakers of Mars and do have the connections necessary to organise a meeting with their counterparts on Earth. If she can use those connections to influence the levers of power, she might be able to make things better.

The problem is, Nobliss just wants to stir up enough chaos that his customer base will expand with people desperate to buy new weapons. To this end, he intends to make Kudelia a martyr, setting her up to be killed by Gjallarhorn, the Martian branch of which he has in his pocket.

See that's the thing about Nobliss at the start of the show: he already has influence over the levers of power. He simply doesn't use them to make things better for anyone except himself.

It takes Kudelia a while to twig this is the case. Blame for the initial murder attempt can be squarely placed at the feet of her father, a craven toady who sells her out to save his own neck. Nobliss' involvement is hidden and she approaches him in good faith as a to get the money necessary to employ Tekkadan to escort her to Earth. He obliges, having been disappointed in Gjallarhorn's ability to do their job and now seeing further opportunities in using Kudelia to stir the pot.

This leads to the Dort Colonies and that bit where Kudelia gets a fleet to back down with only her words.

Except – no. Not really.

Let's take it from the top. The workers on the Dort Company-run space colonies are desperate for better conditions and on the verge of open revolt. Nobliss is funnelling guns and mobile workers to them via Teiwaz and Tekkadan. The leaders of the workers unions, fearing what more radical elements among their number might do, organise a march on Company headquarters to make their demands heard. Gjallarhorn, however, are aware of the colonists' intentions and set up a pretext for wiping them out. The whole situation is a colossal trap.

Into this walks Kudelia, who Nobliss has been bigging up as 'the Maiden of Revolution', fighting for the rights of people in Mars-sphere. It is vital to keep in mind he is the one who comes up with this moniker, not Kudelia herself. Sure, Kudelia takes inspiration from that one history book, but she did not set out to lead some grand-scale uprising. Again, her plan is to go to Earth and hold polite discussions with Arbrau to get better export deals. That's it.

By this point, however, she's starting to understand what she's up against. Quite apart from nearly being murdered by Gjallarhorn, her interactions with Teiwaz have demonstrated that other people want to take advantage of what she's doing. Indeed, in order to get the necessary support to reach Earth, she has to bargain away half-metal mining rights to Teiwaz.

Dwell on that for a minute. Her whole aim is to use money from the mining to improve things in Chryse, and now she's given a cut of it to the Jupiter mafia, just for the chance of making that work. Gjallarhorn has too much invested in their role as the colonial police force to ever willingly let Chryse gain independence. They will do anything to stop Kudelia and they're way too powerful for a lone idealist and a bunch of child soldiers to tackle alone.

So Kudelia choses not to be idealistic. She choses to be pragmatic, in the name of the end result.

But of course, nobody hearing rumours about the Maiden of Revolution has any idea this is the case. To them, she's a symbol of hope, heralding hope of change, and they greet her and Tekkadan (the 'heroic band of knights' escorting her) accordingly. Buoyed by their presence – and, more importantly, the guns they've unwittingly delivered – the workers head to Company HQ, where Gjallarhorn is poised to crush them in one fell swoop.

Kudelia is basically a bystander up to that point. She has no idea it's even happening until she stumbles on to the march while chasing after her maid, Fumitan Admoss, who she's just found out is in the employ of Nobliss. This is revealed by series arch-demi-villain/anti-protagonist McGillis in an effort to prevent Kudelia's death and so use her later. But Kudelia, being far more good of heart than him, wants to know the full story from Fumitan and pursues her through the colony, getting mixed up with the union people right as Gjallarhorn opens fire.

What is supposed to happen here, per Nobliss' scheme, is that Kudelia dies publicly in the course of the violence. See above re: inciting sales. But Kudelia survives, first due to the union workers protecting her, then to Fumitan taking a sniper's bullet for her – because all else aside, Kudelia is a kind, charismatic person who manages to get the people on side more often than not. With their supposed ally having prevented Kudelia's assassination, Nobliss' men pull out, marking the failure of his plan.

While this is happening, Nobliss himself receives a personal call from McMurdo Barriston, head of Teiwaz, who not-so subtly warns him off trying to kill Kudelia. Teiwaz stands to wins substantial profits if Kudelia's mission succeeds and they are the big dogs in the outer-spheres, so get with the programme. This warning comes too late to stop events already in motion, but it does neutralise Nobliss for the foreseeable future.

Shortly thereafter, he receives another call, this time from Kudelia, very much alive and in need of his assistance. You see, the massacre in the colony has led to a full-blown rebellion, with Gjallarhorn's sabotage meaning the colonists are being slaughtered by the forces deployed against them. It's a blood-bath, and Kudelia and Tekkadan are caught right in the middle of it.

Luckily. Kudelia has a plan.

We never hear what she says to Nobliss to convince him to help. However, I think it's reasonable to assume that her final illusions about him have shattered and she has put enough of the pieces together to know he set her up, big time. On the other hand, she also knows she currently has Teiwaz's support and her death would inconvenience them. My personal read is that she leverages this fact mercilessly – if politely – and requests Nobliss kindly give her a hand out of the mess he's dropped her into.

Impressed by her sheer guts, Nobliss obliges, pulling strings to get her a broadcast channel provided by the African Union – the very power bloc for whom the Dort Company operates the colonies.

Here is where Kudelia gives her speech, standing up in front of the world to decry the injustices being perpetrated before her. She castigates Gjallarhorn for their butchery and dares them to shoot her down on live TV (much to Tekkadan's collective WTF).

It is important to note (and I swear I'll stop saying that now) that even here, Gjallarhorn aren't the ones who back off. The commander of the operation is fully in 'jam the transmission, kill the lot of them' mode to the very end. But ultimately, the African Union themselves say – no. Stand down. Presumably because somebody who owed Nobliss a favour just let Kudelia put an enormous hole possible in the media narrative they were constructing around what was happening and those in charge, quite reasonably, panicked.

(If IBO offers one main lesson about big institutions, it's that they're full of factions working against one another.)

So yes. Kudelia gives a speech and the killing stops. Eventually, this leads to a negotiated settlement to give the workers more rights. Again, the show doesn't dwell on the details but I think 'the police quit halfway through six city's worth of riots' fairly neatly explains how the Company got brought to the table afterwards.

If Kudelia hadn't stood in front of the guns, things likely would have ended much more miserably. But like I said, there's far more to it than what she actually says. Kudelia leverages her connections to Nobliss, who leverages his connections to the African Union while himself being pressured by Teiwaz, who have bought Kudelia for their own interests, who is now fully conscious of this rats-nest of venal motives she's caught in. Mikazuki might come away deeply enamoured by Kudelia's ability to influence the world with just her voice, but we know it's not that simple. The things that allow the speech to take place and the reasons it has the required effect are laid out, bit by bit, to demonstrate this is a world where it's not what you say but who you have on your side at the time.

This informs everything that comes next. When Kudelia and Tekkadan finally reach Earth to discover Makanai has been ousted as Prime Minister, they are left with no choice except to get him his job back. He is the lynchpin of Kudelia's plan, so she sets about making more deals and getting him to Arbrau's capital in Edmonton for a key election. Which means cosying up to McGillis and his dumb mask, because he holds power on Earth she lacks. More compromises, more trading the future for an advantage in the present.

The election is the other Big Speech moment for the season and this receives somewhat less step-by-step justification. Partly, I think, because the point has already been demonstrated, so we can make do with brief glimpses of Makanai's allies laying the groundwork for his comeback while the show concentrates on the martial drama of Tekkadan battling through Gjallarhorn's defence perimeter. We're shown enough to reasonably conclude Makanai retained strong support in Arbrau. His allies are powerful people and his opponent had to sell herself to Iznario Fareed in order to oust him. Plus, by dint of arriving in Edmonton at all, Makanai can make a stink about Gjallarhorn's (illegal) interference in an internal affair, dealing them a harmful blow.

Within this context, giving Kudelia the stage might plausibly be read as a power-move by someone who's already won. That she shames more votes his way . . . well, this is ultimately still a story. IBO shows its working well enough for me, personally, to be satisfied with how the plot beats hit.

And with Makanai reinstated, Season 1 ends on an upbeat note for the Martian independence movement. Kudelia negotiates her deal, making all the sacrifices worthwhile – hooray!

Sacrifices. Interesting word. Everyone is at it, sacrificing each other for the greater good, for some far-off goal. Whatever Mikazuki's opinions on the matter, Kudelia dwells on the members of Tekkadan who die doing a job she is paying them for. She has their blood on her hands.

But what of Kudelia's personal sacrifices?

In Season 2, we see these come home to roost. Right away, we find Kudelia working as president of the Admoss Company, administering the half-metal mining on behalf of the people of Chryse . . . and Teiwaz, Nobliss and McGillis, her not-so silent partners. She has given up politics to focus on this task, building schools and orphanages with her fraction of the profit from the deals she made.

Perhaps it is therefore no wonder she is so much more reserved and downcast at this point. After all, how would you feel if you'd had to get into bed with the mafia, an arms-dealer and the world's least-reliable Machiavelli-impersonator?

This is Kudelia's version of Mikazuki losing his body so he can keep fighting. Kudelia takes what she can practically achieve at the expense of never becoming a true 'Maiden of Revolution'. It limits her potential as the inspiring figure Nobliss set her up to be, it neuters the hope she can provide, and restricts her achievements to fiddling around the edges of a still-unjust system. Not because she doesn't want to do more, not because she isn't a fundamentally good person, but because she values doing something concrete over aiming for a dream she may never reach.

Within the story, Kudelia forms one pole of morality, demonstrating how to grow and learn, and the importance of not letting your reach exceed your grasp. It's by following her advise that Takaki escapes the fate the rest of Tekkadan suffers, for example. However she also ends up shaking hands with the man responsible for killing large chunks of her adoptive family. I am not certain if the message coming out of that is the one intended, but it sure as hell is a coherent one.

Sometimes, if you want to make a difference, you have to trade with terrible people. And sometimes, making that trade stops your ultimate aim dead in their tracks.

“But Words, “ you might say, “isn't that a terribly cynical view of politics and how the distribution of power works to disempower even the most influential advocates of change?”

To which I'd say, “how did you get in my house?” before adding, “well yes, but this is a show rooted in the reality of child soldiers. If you're not being deeply cynical about the mechanisms by which the world operates, you're doing it wrong.”

These are the kinds of compromises made every day by those working in charities and political establishments, or any kind of official avenue, trying to do some good. I've been there myself, on much, much smaller scales. It's not right. Yet it happens. Until there are is an almost-inconceivably thorough change to the way the world is organised, it's going to keep happening.

Kudelia fails the same way most of the characters in Iron-Blooded Orphans do: incompletely. Like many of the others, she offers inspiration, hope, kindness, love, and opportunity to those around her. That she is ultimately powerless to save them is a direct, unintended consequence of who she is and what she values, and how those factors inform the choices she makes. That she achieves some measure of what she set out to is an ambiguous success at best.

The epilogue for the show portrays a Mars freed from Earth, with Kudelia as chairperson for the new Martian Union assembly. She has taken a position of power and this is presented as a good thing. A reward for her dedication to the slow, practical path. She gets to extol the virtues of the world she now lives in, building on Tekkadan's sacrifices to create something better.

But I can't stop thinking about all those deals from Season 1, how her speeches are underpinned equally by her righteous indignation at injustice and the pragmatic means by which she takes the stage. I can't help wonder how far her portion of the tragedy stretches. What fresh compromises did she make in order to reach the point of cosigning the Human Debris Abolishment Treaty?

What I know for sure is, for the chance to take another step forward, she wouldn't have hesitated.

Bad News of the Week:

It's bad what's happening on the Canary Islands right now. What has already happened on Rhodes. And on Hawaii. From the endless expanses of Russia's Siberian tundra, we can only guess what's going on - because the information policy here is simply: there is no information. I mean wildfires. Which used to be an exception and now rarely make it into the headlines. Because they have become too commonplace. I'm particularly concerned about Canada, of course. Which is the hardest hit. And is closest to me.

This year, Canada is experiencing the most devastating wildfire season since records began. Nationwide, according to figures from the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre, 5,700 fires are currently burning across more than 137,000 square kilometers. That's roughly equivalent to the entire land area of Greece - and that includes all the islands. In addition, of course, there are countless square kilometers that have already burned, where the flames can no longer find forage. As a reminder: that even in New York City yellow fire clouds from Canada made breathing difficult was already more than two months ago.

On U.S. television, only 5% of news stories about wildfires - which eventually rage in Washington, Oregon and California too - mention the relevance of climate change. Why? Official reason: because the audience doesn't want to hear it. Instead of acknowledging reality and taking active action, they'd rather bury their heads in the sand. Like the ostrich. Yes, that's that big ratite whose brain is smaller than one of its eyes. You got the point.

Good News of the Week:

It's been five years since an autistic student sat down in front of the Swedish Parliament on Friday with a sign reading "School Strike for Climate." Fridays for Future was born, and young Greta Thunberg even became Time's Person of the Year. Her goal was to create policies based on scientific knowledge to save the world from the consequences of climate change for her and future generations. In retrospect, she cannot be satisfied with the success of her efforts. For, in fact, precisely nothing worth mentioning has been done. The old white men in power still don't get it, business as usual.

So what can be done? On the one hand, there are the young (and old) radicals of Last Generation, Extinction Rebellion, etc., who - in the tradition of Greenpeace and Robin Wood - are trying to stir up the masses with civil disobedience. Obviously, this is not working either. "Free ride for free citizens" is still more important than saving the planet. Because the ignorant establishment doesn't want to move any more than the thoughtless people.

And then there are those who try to beat the system with its own weapons - in court. The German Supreme Court has already ruled that the political executive must do more for nature conservation and against climate change, because the future of the young depends on it. On this basis, a lawsuit is currently being filed against the Ministry of Transport, for example, because it is not even meeting its minimum statutory targets. Willfully not.

Last week, there were two other news items that take up precisely this principle of "beating with one's own weapons." First, Germany's second largest energy producer, RWE, is being sued by a Peruvian because the corporation is statistically responsible for 0.5% of global man-made climate change that harms him and his homeland. Let's see how this turns out. But in any case, it's a precedent that shows the fossil fuel lobby that it can't shirk responsibility like the nuclear lobby does.

And secondly, there was a highlight in the US state of Montana. 16 young people between the ages of 5 and 22 had sued for their right to a clean environment - as it says in their state's constitution. And were proven right. Observers believe the ruling could have a signal effect and maybe even stop future oil and gas projects. And Michael Gerrard, a Columbia University climate expert, sees a turning point as a matter of fact: "It's one of the most important decisions on climate change ever handed down by a court." Let's hope he's right.

Personal happy moment of the week:

We just spent three days in Dresden, the capital of Saxony, also known as "Elbe Florence". Actually, we were there for a concert of the Berlin dancehall musician Peter Fox, whose concert in Munich was already sold out. And not only did we have a great open air concert evening on the banks of the Elbe river, but we also discovered an architecturally highly interesting city (Zwinger, Semper Opera, Our Lady's Church, etc.), drank lots of Aperol Sprizz, visited an exhibition of up-and-coming artists, ate well and enjoyed the Canaletto city festival with local music greats. As I write this, I'm listening to Freddy Fischer & His Cosmic Rocktime Band playing some delightfully sultry German disco music. Nice.

I couldn't care less...

...about the US criminal justice system. Last week we learned that the indictment of Donald J. Trump in Georgia for attempting to influence the outcome of the 2020 presidential election is special (remember: he just lost). That's because, unlike the federal lawsuits elsewhere, here, as president, he could neither order the Justice Department to halt proceedings nor pardon himself. Since when, in a constitutional state, can the executive dictate the actions of the judiciary? Ever heard of separation of powers? And then pardon itself? This reminds me very much of the "Get out of jail" card from Monopoly. That such a thing is even discussed in the self-proclaimed "world's leading democracy" fills me with shudders....

As I write this...

...I am sitting in a train. Which came on time. And even goes where I want it to go. This is obviously not (anymore) a matter of course. Of the last five times I used long-distance trains, five times it went wrong. Because the connection I booked didn't exist. Because there were people in the track bed and the police closed the section of track. Because an overhead line was torn due to a thunderstorm. Because the connecting train unfortunately could not wait for the delayed predecessor train. Because there was a signal malfunction. I am a big train fan. For environmental reasons and because I find it the most comfortable of all transportation options. But sometimes it's hard to stay true to your principles and keep your good mood.

Post Scriptum

"La furia roja" has done it: the Spanish women's soccer team has won the FIFA World Cup. Seldom has it been so worthwhile to sit in front of the TV at noon, it was a great match. Felicidades chicas!

Is shifting lucid dreaming?

I'm gonna be going over why I think that shifting is lucid dreaming and the implications of it being such. If you don't agree with me, we can talk, but don't come at me looking for blood. Also, this is gonna be a long one.

I'd like to give credit to @analyticalrachael for borrowing some of her points. She is one of the first people I've seen to come at this controversial question with actual arguments. However, we come to different conclusions and I am way more biased so I encourage you to go read her post.

Why do I believe that shifting isn't actually shifting?

Because there isn't any proof, to which I can hear that there wasn't scientific proof for lucid dreaming until not very long ago. While that's true that doesn't disprove my point. Anything may be proven in the future but I don't have to give it the benefit of the doubt.

And if shifting, as in going to any reality you want to, would be real, why couldn't it be exploited by powerful entities? Say you could shift to a reality exactly like this one, however you have psychic powers and can read anyone's mind. You can see how that would affect our world. And the thing is, anyone could do this to prove that shifting is real but, at least for now, I don't see that happening.

Why is shifting lucid dreaming rather than something completely different?

Now, my beliefs here are a bit more complicated. While I think that shifting is lucid dreaming, I think that it's a different, advanced type(charachterized by its' high consistency). For example, here's an old post from 2013 that calls it a "persistent realm"

The similarity of techniques is also very interesting.

Here's a short excerpt from Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming (1990).

I find it quite similar to the Raven method. There are details that vary like the starfish position, but it seems that that wouldn't be necessary in all cases. You may also notice that there's no visualisation in this practice and I'd say that's because lucid dreamers usually don't aim to end up anywhere in particular(however other LD techniques do use visualization).

Does it really matter tho?

Somewhat. For me it changes one important thing.

And that is the morality of hurting others in your dr/lucid dream. If you believe that you are in a different reality that means that the people there are real and that they can experience real harm. Obviously that puts a certain type of responsibility on yourself and others in your community.

If you don't believe that though, that means that while you may personally abstain from doing such actions, you don't have much basis to reprimand other people.

The learning processes may also be different, but this is more probability based rather than being a certain thing.

In conclusion

While I feel like there is much more evidence in support of shifting being an advanced type of lucid dreaming, and that your beliefs do have a certain effect on your practice, I do not feel like that means that one side should be berated for their beliefs. In terms of your experiences, you will feel pretty much exactly the same too.

That said, if you have different opinions with someone on this topic you may be more likely to end up having a disagreement due to the reasons listed above.

P. S. I have used shifting terms not so long ago. That's not because I have radically changed my opinion in a month, but because I didn't wanna make it seem like I was appropriating terms.

Free or inexpensive DJ gear to get the job done... its definitely come a long way since I last checked

It's crazy, I haven't looked into DJ equipment for over 10 years since I exclusively started delving into music production back then, but I was at a place where all my records were stored ('were' being the operative word, since I couldn't find a single piece of vinyl anywhere having spent thousands of dollars on records back then, where I would near ritualistically blow near 80% of my wage on records alone on a monthly basis. Although my two technics turntables were still there, and intact, my backup 4Channel digital hybrid analogue/fully midi assignable Korg Zero4 midi controller was nowhere to be found. In that failed attempt at setting up my DJ rig last night for not being able to find anything, I thought I might as well see where its currently at on the digital front.

Ableton Live

Seems obvious, I used to use it all the time for DJing experimentally after my long foray into using vinyl emulation. Everything else to my mind is just a speed bump as far as DJ equipment is concerned, even CDJ's. The only problem with using Ableton Live though is that you pretty much have to set up a DJ setup work session project within Ableton Live, which can take hours of prep depending how many tunes you want to use (that all need gridding), and what your setup is going to be. It's not simply a case dropping in nay tunes in as you go along. It's not the most affordable option, and would require that you already have Ableton Live (unless you have the pirated version of course). The Ableton Live lite version usually comes free with music hardware, or can be acquired for as little as 20 bucks legit, but it does lack the audio clip manipulation, mix, and remix features that come with the standard, or suite versions of Ableton Live.

Pacemaker DJ device

It's in a box, in pieces. It doesn't work, and was kaput years ago. I didn't want to spend the money on buying another one, especially with having a laptop at my disposal. Surely there must be some laptop software alternatives?

Pioneer WeDJ

In its current form, it's everything that the Tonium Pacemaker DJ device/DJ app should have become on a mobile device for both Android, and iOS. However I don't have a mono headphone monitor, and line out cable splitter on hand, nor could I be bothered ordering one, although I do have one somewhere that I can't find that I bought for the Blackberry Playbook (also now kaput) many years ago. If you have one of Pioneers controllers you can obviously use WeDJ with that instead, which should then give you both stereo pre-mix monitoring, and stereo line outputs to your amp. Pioneer's WeDJ app is completely free to download and use for both Android, and iOS, and is essentially a fully functional DJ app that doesn't require any sort of ongoing subscription for full functionality in order to DJ your music collection.

Native Instruments Traktor DJ 2

Useful if you've got a laptop or a MacBook Pro, and in its most current form is completely free as a fully featured, and highly polished DJ app that functions perfectly for purpose. It's actually shocking how much they actually give you to work with here given that its 100% free from a main competitor commercial brand, but then again with the likes of the open source MIXX DJ app projects giving you way more fully pro features (even a stack of things that many will never even get to using) than this for completely free, I guess they didn't have much of a choice. Although native instruments do have a Pro version of the Traktor DJ app that does come at a premium, which comes with more features than most people would ever even use.

If you don't have a touchscreen to use with it

You'll definitely need an assignable midi controller of some sort to use with it, as well as an audio interface of your own that has a separate set lines for stereo pre-mix monitoring, and stereo line outputs to your chosen amp. Then again, I'm guessing Native Instruments would probably most likely prefer you use one of their midi controllers with it which pretty much gives you a one to one layout. Depending on which you get, there's one with a built in audio interface (which will give you the stereo pre-mix monitor headphones outputs, and separate stereo line outputs you'd more ideally need integrated directly into the midi controller), and one without, but if you were to buy one used from places like eBay, they could be acquired pretty inexpensively for anything between 70 to 150 bucks.

If you have a touchscreen on your laptop

This is probably the ideal, as this gives you the options to 'needle drop', and track scrub via the touch screen, as well as use the controls via the interface, although the GUI controls for the EQ, and pitch within the windows version of Traktor DJ 2 software isn't ideally optimised for touch interactions like it is on the iPad version, but the ability to competently needle drop, and track scrub via the touchscreen, combined with a one of their midi controllers, and an appropriate audio interface would be a killer combination. Something like the Behringer U-Control 222 is great quality as far as its audio is concerned, and can be acquired for around 25 bucks new, However, that won't give you independent headphone pre-mix monitoring, and separate stereo line output compatibility despite the U-Control 222 being equipped with it, where they've most probably rigged it in a way where it Traktor DJ 2 app will only function fully in such a way with one of their own Native Instruments audio interfaces.

MIXX

This has everything that you can find in all the commercial premium DJ application (and more), with compatibility for multiple different vinyl timecode DVS standards too from the numerous different manufacturer brands if you're a vinyl emulation junkie. They've vastly improved the default GUI skin too, that makes it look WAY more professional, and slicker looking than it used to, where it wouldn't look too out of place on a laptop sat next to another laptop maybe running Ableton live on it as part of some sort of sync setup. And that's because what I want to discuss today is the way we teach history to kids and young adults. (Note that I am European so what I describe here might not apply to you, in which case, please share your experience and the degree to which it is different elsewhere!) When history lessons start, you hear about the creation of the universe and Earth. You learn about the past eras and you spend your first years memorizing names and dates of the events furthest from what you actually experience. You go through the age of dinosaurs, the bronze and other eras, the beginnings of humanity. After that, you start with early civilizations. Ancient Greece and Rome, the Middle Ages, Ressaisance, …, and to painful detail, your country's ancient history. Then, and only then, do you get to advance to the 20th century and the events leading up to the 21st century.

And.. wait.. why is this thing that I'm learning about happening again? It's like there were centuries of context for this that I have to understand before I can properly understand this. IF ONLY I learned what's happening first because THEN I would be interested in finding out the why.

That is the first problem this order of topics creates. If we taught what's happening right now, or at least what happened as close to now as we can try to objectively teach about, we could then teach from what that situation emmerged. And we would have years to go into detail about it. We could start in the immediate past and progress further. Gain deeper and deeper insight into how all this unfolded. And people might actually be interested in getting to learn about it.

But even if they weren't interested, and that is the second issue of the current system, they would at least know what is happening and be "forced" to know why. They would actually become informed citizens, able to make informed opinions on current events and vote reasonably. And they would learn this stuff from the start, from the age when they are forming their opinions. Current events would not be the last thing they hear about before they leave school, at which point they don't listen anyway.
