goh starter trio meta perhaps? i was ensnared by the goh-scorbunny parallel subpoint in the cubone meta bc i'm making myself unwell thinking about how scorbunny latching on to goh and goh latching on to ash.... but also more generally, sobble's whole thing and the absolute tearjerker drizzile evolution episode, and goh's weird ass dream about his rillaboom parents and then waking up to baby grookey clinging to his arm, you get it, i know you're galaxy brained about this
YESSS I AM *SO* GLAD YOU ASKED!!
so my tl;dr here is that all of the galar starters represent something about goh specifically relating to his childhood. their growth and eventual evolution (or lack thereof!) therefore serve to highlight his character development (as an aside, i think this is a very common theme in anipoke. ash's pikachu not evolving speaks to the fact that ash's growth isn't about becoming someone new but about staying true to himself and embracing a battle style that reflects the creative ingenuity that, in the early os, other characters mocked him for. similarly, dawn's piplup chooses not to evolve because it doesn't want to change how things are between them. does this not seem fitting for the partner of someone like dawn, who has always admired her mother so much that she never even considering doing something other than following in her footsteps? i'm sure there are other examples, but these seem to me the most obvious ones!).
let's break down each one, then!
scorbunny
when we meet scorbunny, goh is still determined that mew will be his first pokemon. this is a point of stubbornness that, while impressive and arguably kind of admirable, is frankly kind of stupid. how is he supposed to get to mew without any pokemon to help him? there's an interesting implication in this resolution, which jn004 and jn005 really highlight for us - goh isn't comfortable with having a pokemon. he knows a lot about them, is interested in researching them, but as far as the bond between pokemon and trainer goes, i don't think he feels prepared for that. it's easier to pick a target that is far from reasonably attainable for him at this point, especially since he does have some history with mew - didn't it take an interest in him? didn't it give him a reason to chase after it?
so meeting scorbunny, he's obviously not thinking about catching it. but he lies to the guy at the scone stand, in an interesting parallel to how scorbunny steps in to protect the nickit. he doesn't even seem to know why he does it. but just before that scene, he sees scorbunny wipe some of the dirt off its face. he doesn't get the whole story and connect all the dots until after, but i think he realizes then that scorbunny is trying to hide itself in some way. that it's performing as something it's not. and on some unconscious level, that motivates him to lie for it. after, we get this whole exchange, where the scone seller tells ash and goh the story
Tumblr media
and this note is what makes goh get up and approach scorbunny and the nickit:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
it's very symbolic that he wipes the mud off scorbunny's face. and then later, he even points out when they see it again that it looks better without all the mud covering it up - it looks more like itself. it's not pretending to be something it's not. goh wiping the mud off its face is him saying that he accepts it as it is. that being resigned to living a certain way just to fit in or just because that's how it's always been is pointless.
and i mean...even ash says in this scene that the things goh is saying are things he's only recently learned himself, right? goh denies it (and tbh when he says that he's always thought the world is big and anyone can explore it if they want to or whatever - i don't think that's untrue! i think it's just that, prior to meeting ash, he didn't have it in him to explore it), but ash has a point. and what goh is doing for scorbunny here is the same thing that ash did for him.
relatedly, scorbunny follows him, right? in the same way that goh "accepts" ash as his friend, scorbunny chooses goh as its trainer. goh recognizes that it travelled far for him, that it saw a vision of its future with him, and changes his mind about not catching it. i think the determination he saw in scorbunny to chase after its dreams resounded with him, because he's only just started doing the same thing. and his entire character is built around this idea of like, learning how to adapt and how to let other people help you find the courage to chase your dreams (and even to help you chase them). how could he possibly deny scorbunny the same thing?
but while scorbunny's enthusiasm helps motivate goh to chase his dreams, he is very flippant and dismissive, as we see when it learns ember and he says it doesn't matter, that scorbunny doesn't need to know a fire-type move and this gut-punch of a line, of course:
Tumblr media
goh is someone who needs a lot of convincing to do things he doesn't think he'll be good at (or enjoy). he only joins project mew because gary goads him into it. he spends most of his life refusing to make friends, because he had one bad experience. he's a fairly black-and-white thinker, which makes sense considering his background. he doesn't really believe in change. he especially doesn't believe that people (or pokemon, in this case) can change their circumstances just through hard work and determination. as we see in jn003 with the ivysaur, he also doesn't think that it's anyone else's place to intervene and "help" others. if you can't change something, then don't. and there's no point in hoping it'll change on its own, either.
when scorbunny storms off here, his expression is interesting. this isn't the expression of someone being judgemental. it's the expression of someone who sympathizes.
Tumblr media
he sees scorbunny trying so hard to do something he thinks it can't do and thinks that scorbunny's determination to change things is, if i had to guess, kind of immature. a lesson scorbunny will have to learn, whether it wants to or not. at first it's kind of endearing, but then he actually gets frustrated, because he feels like scorbunny's determination to learn ember is harmful to them both. here, there's a degree of "why won't you just trust that i know what's best for you?" for sure, but on a deeper level, i think that stems from a place of "can't you see that i'm just trying to protect you?"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...but obviously, all he really does is wind up lashing out and hurting scorbunny's feelings. he tells ash that he was trying to draw out scorbunny's strengths (and he was, by telling it to use moves it was already good at!), but ash points out that their values weren't aligned and that's kind of the opposite of strength when it comes to pokemon battling. so he reassesses the situation and finds a way to bring out scorbunny's strength that also aligns with what scorbunny wants. that compromise is what makes scorbunny evolve. it was the right call! but then raboot starts ignoring him.
and this is like. a running gag with scorbunny - goh gets distracted by other things and doesn't notice that it's trying to show him things. it happens when they meet and it happens again in this episode with its ember. we see something very similar with goh and his parents in jn032 when he's excited at the prospect of their vacation together, but when he tries to ask what they want to do, he turns around and find they're both asleep (and we see the flashback of something similar happening last time, too).
with raboot, in a lot of ways, goh is grappling with...himself. or at least, the person he was before he met ash - cold and distant, more interested in doing whatever he thinks is worth his time than in school, for example. so if goh saw his child self in scorbunny, he sees his more "adolescent" (i mean. he's still ten so still child, technically. but older child lol) self in raboot. and he actually responds to this in a way that's a lot like how we see his parents responding to him. in jn022, we see him
buy a bunch of apples for raboot, even though he thinks it doesn't need them (and is hurt when it doesn't let him have one, despite raboot seeming pleased that he bought them for it). compare to the device he shows horace in jn032, for example, which he says his parents built for him. or his six computer monitors. his parents reach him best through material means!
question why raboot hates him when it's not responsive to his overtures. contrarily, goh's parents don't think he hates them; they just automatically assume the worst case scenario (like in jn015 when he calls and they immediately wonder if he did something and got kicked out of the institute). but while that's their worst case scenario about him, raboot hating him is kind of goh's worst case scenario, right? it took him time to open up and accept scorbunny as his partner. now that it's evolved and is acting differently, he's terrified that he came to care for it only for it to leave him.
which leads to my last point here, which is that he doesn't actually ask what it wants. in this episode, he concludes that raboot would be happier without him. so he leaves it behind, but he never actually considers how it might feel. goh's parents do the same thing! they worry about him, but they don't share their concerns or ask how he feels. they just assume that he must feel a certain way and they adapt to compensate for that. but they never actually ask him what he wants.
this episode ends with him realizing that he hasn't been reacting to raboot's feelings so much as to his own, of course, and we see their relationship smooth out quite a bit. he's acknowledging that he's done things wrong, but also that it's not all his fault - and raboot's change in temperment is just a consequence of it evolving. they accept each other again and move on.
then, it evolves into cinderace and kind of opens up again more (though it's been doing that little-by-little since jn022). i think the fact that raboot and riolu evolve at the same time was a really cool move by the writers to kind of demonstrate how like...the relationship between ash and goh is reflected in the growth of their pokemon. they trained together! in a way they kind of grew up together! riolu, ash's token baby pokemon in jn, evolving at the same time as goh's starter feels like a very deliberate choice to highlight how ash helped goh's pokemon grow, too - through getting the ball rolling with how he helped goh grow as a person and a trainer. if that makes sense?
anyway, i don't have much to say about cinderace, other than that if he saw himself as a child in scorbunny and as an older child in raboot, then cinderace's level of openness and its enthusiasm aren't just reflexive of it getting back more of its scorbunny-esque personality - it also shows how goh has changed and has learned to embrace these parts of himself, now that he's in that "coming of age" age (well, for pokemon. he is still only ten lmao).
i think we see something similar with his other starters, though maybe a little less on the nose.
sobble
the drizzile episode, as you mentioned, is probably Thing here. but i think the theme with sobble is sort of that, where scorbunny maybe reflects more of the way goh thought about growing up and his aspirations (and how hard it was to open up to people), sobble more so mirrors his social experiences at school and with chloe.
VISUALLY, i think it's really telling that when goh catches sobble, he's...literally speaking to it from the other side of the water:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this whole episode (jn028) is about goh kind of...forcing sobble into positions it's not necessarily comfortable with, and not realizing that it's uncomfortable until it runs away from him. as we saw with raboot, this is a common theme with goh - but it's most obvious with sobble!
he realizes, of course, and says this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
even in flashbacks, goh never comes across as a shy kid. he doesn't exactly relate to sobble, but i think he's drawing a parallel here between them. he wasn't shy, but he was always on the "outside" - that's why he's so good at researching. he strives to see things as they are without getting involved. eventually, this is something that will make him a pretty thoughtful and strategic battler, though at this point he's still learning how to apply that to more than just research for the sake of research.
and then after sobble meets inteleon, we have these bits too:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
goh's childhood motivations on the surface appear to be like...he doesn't want to bother with friends, because they aren't going to be able to serve a purpose for him. he isn't interested in making friends with anyone who is less into pokemon than he is. but after what happens with horace, it seems to get a little more complex, and then we have to wonder if his motivations really were that surface-level to begin with, or if, maybe, his policy of not making friends has always been a way for him to protect himself from betrayals like he experienced with horace.
we see chloe as early as jn001 trying to convince him to make friends, to no success. she doesn't even refer to herself as his friend - he doesn't seem to be willing to let her. he believes he doesn't need friends and is better off alone. but he doesn't realize until after meeting ash that his solitude is more of a self-imposed exile, in that it's hurting him more than other people. he can't improve as a person and reach his goals if he's too busy trying to protect himself to accept that he needs help from other people to do those things. so, again - i think he sees that side of himself in sobble. so it feels very impactful that he reaches out to help sobble become a better battler, but rather than forcing it to battle in a way that makes sense to him, he comes up with a way to have it train that plays off of its strengths of running and hiding.
and then, of course, there's the episode where sobble evolves, jn062. the writers themselves do most of the work here of drawing the parallel between goh's childhood and how drizzile is feeling, but i think it goes even deeper than that. drizzile is unhappy because it wanted to evolve into inteleon, not into drizzile. it's not comfortable in its own skin. and it doesn't necessarily want others to see it, because it feels like it's still growing and it's not ready yet. it kind of just...needs time to sulk and brood. drizzile runs away again, because it's not ready, and while they're looking for it, it's chloe who makes goh start thinking about when he was a kid, by saying this:
Tumblr media
which prompts him to think about how he was searching for a "reason" for why drizzile was acting how it was, just like how adults used to demand reasons from him even when he didn't have them. and then of course we get this scene:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
but i think he does on some level know why, because he talks immediately after this about how his parents weren't home and often felt lonely. he's more comfortable being alone. he's protecting himself. which is reinforced by the fact that he then tells drizzile this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
goh has a hard time putting his feelings into words, which is something we see throughout jn. he sees that drizzile is the same and this is a huge moment for him, because he's saying here that it doesn't matter what inspired its feelings; he understands it is experiencing those feelings and that's enough. he'll wait until it's ready to fully process them or whatever else it needs. drizzile kind of returns the favour when he starts crying here and it reaches up to brush away his tears, then disappears again.
overall, this episode does an amazing job of showing us how goh has become someone who actually acknowledges his and his pokemon's feelings - this is the only time we see him as a child where he's not doing something to try to ignore his feelings, or trying to walk away from them. in flashbacks, his back is often to his parents. in jn032, he gets upset, and then tries to cover his disappointment up immediately with anger and avoidance. the writers set this scene up so that we can see the reason behind his feelings clearly (just like we can see the reason behind drizzile's, even though goh and co. can't), but they rightly emphasize that goh's ability to analyze "why" he or his pokemon are feeling a certain way isn't always helpful. emotions are meant to be felt, not intellectualized. it's a good message, and a huge area of growth!
drizzile's evolution into inteleon also shows us how this acceptance translates into it eventually being comfortable enough to be who it wants to be. and the characters are impressed by it - it even earns kecleon's admiration, the same way that other inteleon earned its when it was a sobble. this is a pretty clear mirror with goh's social life, where he went from being this friendless outcast figure to someone with a lot of friends, and a great willingness to make more, as he became more comfortable and confident and willing to reach out to others.
and lastly,
grookey
the only one of the three that doesn't evolve, for reasons that aren't ever really made clear to us. but i think that as random (...and tone deaf) as his dream sequence at the start of grookey's debut episode is, it actually makes a lot of sense. in the original, the dream has camille and walker transformed into rillaboom, and goh is understandably freaked out. but i think the bigger, more symbolic thing is that even if it is a dream, his parents are the ones that foist grookey upon him. this does seem like a really weird choice, until you start thinking about the parallels, right?
in reality, grookey is team rocket's pokemon. the episode title "when a house is not a home" tells us that grookey obviously doesn't feel like it "belongs" there. but the episode doesn't open in team rocket's base. it opens in goh's apartment. and the part i didn't show in the drizzile scene above is when he says this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the fact that goh was home alone a lot as a kid gets brought up fairly often. it implies that he kind of had to adopt this lone wolf persona, because there was no one else around to take care of him. he had to learn how to console himself and meet his own needs (hence why he's so combative about ash intervening with the ivysaur in jn003!), which is a lot of responsibility for a kid. grookey is handed to him like it's a responsibility in his dream, but then they bond. and he starts to appreciate having grookey around, to the point that he misses it when it returns to team rocket.
to me, the choice to have grookey not evolve kind of comes down to grookey being kind of...emblematic of goh's childhood. like, in his dream, grookey is this burden that's forced on him. someone he has to take care of, even though he isn't really prepared to do that. in reality, grookey is escaping from an environment that doesn't meet its needs. putting those two things together, i mean...that's just my reading of it, anyway. so grookey not evolving, and goh accepting grookey as it is - without any of the "growing up" analogs we have with cinderace and inteleon - is a way of showing that goh has come to terms with his childhood and that he accepts (and cherishes!) his childhood self. which he can only really do after he's done all the growing we see reflected in the evolutions of his other starter mons. (relatedly, grookey is the only starter of goh's who goh considers leaving with other mons in its evolution line. specifically, with two thwackey and their child, i.e. a family unit not unlike goh's!)
anyway! this is a very long post, so thanks for sticking with me if you did. hope my takes are as galaxy-brained as you hoped hehe

So this is truly it, huh? Just like that, no more Doom Patrol?
I don't think I can completely explain how I feel about the show as a whole and how much it means to me, but this final episode just left me empty for both good and bad reasons.
WARNING!!! SPOILERS INCOMING!! DO NOT READ FURTHER IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE EPISODE YET!

The whole Immortus/Butts resolution felt like such a cop-out. Immortus just going "Nah, you know what, I'm fine. Here's your longevity. Oh, and I'm besties with the Butts now. Too-da-loo 🥰" after being presented as their biggest threat ever? Meh
It would have been more cathartic had they somehow defeated Immortus when she was occupied with the Butts and got the longevity thingy off her neck to then run home only to find Rita already dead with Laura frozen with shock/grief beside her. To have them think they managed one more victory but with their biggest loss yet. And for Rita and Laura, the moments before she died could have been used to have a proper conversation and resolution between them. I would have loved if the final scene between them (and with alive non-ghost Rita in general) would have been Laura bringing her the Immortus nail just for Rita to decline cause she's at peace with dying. Even a simple "You're forgiven" would have been enough. And what was the point of telling Laura she's part of the Doom Patrol now to go "Yeah, you should all go your own way now" five minutes after she kicked the bucket???
Vic's ending was expected. It was obvious from the start that he would make it. And I'm glad cause he deserves happiness and to build a future that HE feels is right for him finally.
I'm also delighted Jane (a.k.a just K now) got her happiness both within herself and with Casey. And she's the only one we saw on screen saying goodbye to at least one person properly. Her and Cliff's realtionship was one of my absolute favourite things about the show.
Seems I managed to guess Larry's ending almost exactly. It was so sweet and beautiful. He didn't just return to space with Keeg but Rama as well. Can't lie, I've shed some tears during that scene. And his moment with ghost Rita... 12/10 wouldn't change anything about it
Cliff's ending is my favourite and the one that got me bawling my eyes out. "It's ok. I made it home" Uhm, excuse me?????? How dare the writers break my heart like that???? I am unwell and will need 5-7 business days to recover from it. Poetic, beautiful, amazing, showstopping etc. I love Cliff so fucking much
Dorothy who? Guess she just fell off the Earth after Immortimas
Also, Shelley? Never heard of her. Try looking in the woods when it gets foggy maybe 🤷
I guessed Rita would definitely die too but her whole "Each of you will be better off on your own" turnaround just didn't sit right with me. She's the one that spent her life keeping this little, broken, miserable bunch of just the unluckies motherfuckers known to the world together and managed to create a family that loves and supports eachother to death and THIS is her conclusion?? That they should just disband? Nope, not buying it. I guess it's somehow a way of telling that now the one that held them together, the heart of the show if you will, is gone that it's all done but I feel like that's a an insult to the rest of them and to the strength of their bond. Yes, Rita's insistence brought them together at first, but they've grown and gotten close so much since then even without her interfering in their one-on-one relationships. It just doesn't feel right. I also knew we'd get a Malcolm reunion scene but am I the only one that doesn't really care about him? Tbh, we didn't get to know much about him beside the fact that he was Rita's lover that tragically died. I just can't care about a character I know nothing about. I guess have fun posthumously frolicking in a field, Rita and Malcolm 🤷
So Jane got Casey and her sanity, Larry got Keeg and Rama, Vic got his friends and students, Cliff got see his family, their future and die peacefully beside them, Rita got to reunite with the love of her life in eternity and Laura got to, uhm, *checks notes*, play with a flamethrower? Like, ok, I do dig that she got to destroy the place that ruined her whole life guns a-blazing but what exactly does she get to do later on? The ones who remained alive all got someone to share their new found joy with, a proper plan for the future, they're at peace. Laura didn't get to neither truly reconcile with Rita, nor the Sisterhood, and now the only people she felt close to either died or went their own way without a true goodbye. What, pray tell, does her future look like beside, once again, loneliness and grief???? I fucking hated her ending. Give us a Laura de Mille spin-off, you cowards. Make it right...

people i want to get to know better
love these kinds of games!! thanks for the tag @oflights
last song: My Love Mine All Mine - Mitski! the whole album is very good, and this song is just stuck in my head all the time
favorite color: hahaha funnily enough, the reverse of allie. green and pink, but purple/lilac/lavender is making a big come back for me (and just in the culture generally tbh)
last film/show: All Of Us Strangers, and i am unwell now. and currently watching the new season of Dimension 20!
sweet/savory/spicy: this is such a cheater answer but all my favorite foods are all three, or at least a sweet/savory combo. but listen: good food is all about balancing your flavors!!!
relationship status: single
last thing i googled: Tilda Cobham-Hervey because i'm being so fucking nosy about...
current obsession: Dev Patel, in general and especially after watching the trailer for Monkey Man (Tilda is apparently his partner). my other obsession that i'm trying to be a little measured about is watching paul mescal and andrew scott do press for AOUS.
last book: last book i finished was Nona the Ninth on audiobook. the audiobooks for TLT are very good imo!!! moira quirk is a gem!
i started listening to Saving Time by Jenny Odell. i was kind of lukewarm about her first book, How To Do Nothing (kind of felt like it could've been a series of Medium posts, or a Substack in 2024 terms), but i'm liking this one better i thiiink? i'm only half an hour in tho. and also it feels like a physical book kind of read because there's lots of things i want to think over and underline and decide if i agree with so i might have to switch to that.
looking forward to: my brother made himself the birthday cake from Milk Bar for his birthday (i offered!! but he wanted the experience) so we get to eat that tonight, and then we're going out for dim sum on wednesday. and a fun lil fest announcement coming very soon 🤭🪿
no pressure tagging @cavendishbutterfly @moonmanatee @sorrybutblog @oknowkiss @wolfpants @apricitydays-lazynights @saintgarbanzo @sweet-s0rr0w @basicallyahedgehog @phoebe-delia and like literally everyone. my brain can only remember so many people and i am nosy about everyone.

now that I've had a couple of days to go through SEVERAL stages of mental illness about book 3, I have…Some Thoughts. about the book in general and specifically about N's route, as so far that's the only one in which I've gone through most (if not all) of the interaction variations (yes, I have approximately 83253 tabs open rn. I told y'all I'm being very unwell about this). I've played through M's route several times so far too, but there were fewer standout "wait, what?" moments for me in that route tbh 🥴
below the cut: the peer review nobody asked for! (and my sincerest apologies lmao)
I really need Mishka to hire professional copy editors for these books, y'all. There are grammar/syntax errors that just. shouldn't be there. (and I don't even mean the nitpicky ones that I'm super anal about! I mean ones like using 'stationary' when you mean 'stationery'.)
somewhat related to the above bullet, I hope the testing period for book 4 is a lot longer than it was for book 3. there are some inconsistencies in the narrative that I suspect would have been caught if there'd been more time between the beta testing and the book being sent to HG.
for example, if you trigger the sex scene options in N's combat route, there is at least one errant reference to the feel of denim when like. you're both in workout clothes (and there is significant time spent describing both N's and the MC's outfits!). ALSO, when you go back inside for the debriefing with UB, F & M tease N about their jeans being unzipped when, again: there were no jeans or zippers involved. It's a funny scene after the equivalent research options, but it makes no sense post-combat ones without editing for attire differences.
while I'm thinking about the research scene on N's route, the fact that the MC can confess their love and N flat out says NOTHING in response??? just immediately jumps to gettin' busy despite the MC explicitly asking them to say something in response??? what will probably be Holland's canon route is fine, because the combat path has a "scared by own feelings" choice and you know homegirl immediately tried to yeet herself out of that potential conversation bc they've been dating for all of 30 seconds at this point. BUT knowing that that path was fine bc it happened to fit my OC honestly just made me more annoyed for anyone playing with a different/more emotionally mature/open detective. because going through the "i love you" options in the research scene especially were disappointing.
again, related to the above, the narrative inconsistencies (and the bulky plot) made the pacing often feel inconsistent. there were so many moving pieces and story beats that a lot of scenes felt either rushed (without seeming like that pace was tonally/narratively appropriate) or unnecessarily truncated. I also felt like there were a lot of points of abrupt info-dumping that was clearly meant to give background info on UB/other characters/plotpoints but ended up feeling inorganic/unnatural in terms of actual relationship-building. or, alternatively, like it was meant to build to a resolution point later in the book that just never happened.
for example: the whole post-Unit Victor scene where your LI shares some of their past with you. It didn't feel quite as abrupt/odd in my M route playthroughs, but the flow was JARRING for me in N's. And the abrupt end to that scene is never revisited. like, I understand the conversation maybe not coming up again, but for neither of them to even linger on what were presumably heavy emotional topics or think about it again at what could have been relevant points throughout the book seemed to dilute what I assume was meant to be an important scene.
speaking of things that are basically not revisited when they really should be, if N's overprotectiveness is going to continue to be a defining trait and the MC can continue to be explicitly bothered by it, I am begging for book 4 to let them have an uninterrupted, private conversation about it - particularly after the whole "I don't know how this is going to work" scene after the auction. because if this is how it already is and there are 4 more books, their relationship is going to be so (much more) unhealthy.
a more positive note! I did think it was ~interesting to see the juxtaposition of N's constant over-the-top "romantic gestures/sentiments" schtick against the responses you can get when you invite them to dinner but choose either the "you don't have to go if you would be uncomfortable" or "I'll call it off if you're not feeling it" option. with the former, N's response is that relationships are doing things for the other person/doing things they want to do, and they seem genuinely baffled when the detective immediately disagrees. with the latter, they seem equally surprised at the detective's willingness to ditch dinner for them. it's a brief thing, but both of their potential responses give the impression that N's perception of those statements is disproportionate to their actual significance. I mean. it's a dinner party that the detective almost forgot about entirely. clearly they don't give a shit about rescheduling/going alone. moreover, towards the end of the book, N explicitly worries about not "being enough" for the MC. for whatever reason, N clearly seems to think they're like, constantly on the verge of losing the detective in a different way than they worry about losing them to the neverending string of external threats, and I do hope it's meant to be the foreshadowing I think it is.

I am........a little heated about how Jolyne's mother was treated in the story today esp in contrast to a certain ex husband of hers 🙃, so I decided to post some of my personal ideas and headcanons for her! This is partially based on what little we have of her, but is also very fanfic-y, self-indulgent and may be unkind to Jotaro lol
I have 3 main ideas for her name which I am very indecisive on -
Irene - based on Irene Rapona and alt. Jolyne's name. This would mean that Jolyne's parents put their names together to name her which is cringe but does happen. In the ending, alt. Jolyne now lives free from the Joestar curse (I think?) and so, symbolically, loses the 'Jo-' prefix and just inherits her mother's name whom she's always been closer with anyway.
Dolly - because of Dolly Parton who obvs wrote and sang 'Jolene'. A musical reference and also just a very cute name imo.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hanna - named after Hanna Thorn, the model who Araki based her design and the pendant photo off of. While Irene and Dolly are based on her relation to Jolyne, this is the only name I could think of more based on herself. I'm not the biggest fan of a female character being named based solely on her connection to someone else BUT we have nothing to work with for this woman and, between the two characters she's connected to, I would much rather her name tie into Jolyne's. I haven't chosen a specific name yet though, I like all 3 ideas atm.
Based on the above reference to a model, I like to think Jolyne's mother is a model or at least works with fashion in some way. While it is a non-canon AU, the 'Jolyne, Fly High with GUCCI' one-shot written by Araki gives us some crumbs to work with. I haven't read it yet, but apparently Jolyne's mother has passed in this story and left Gucci clothing behind for her daughter. She's even customized them to fit Jolyne and, through wearing these clothes, Jolyne feels like she's connected to her mother again 🥺 So yeah, I head canon that she's maybe a fashion designer who models her own clothes.
We're told she's a 'crybaby' and is unwell with stress over Jolyne's situation, so I see her as having some type of anxiety disorder. I think that Jotaro's neglect and Jolyne's delinquency has puts a lot of stress on her along with her career. She's been left in a really difficult situation and it takes its toll on her. Sadly, I could totally see her as one of those women who had to give up on her career dreams due to the pressures of single parenthood, so maybe she's no longer a designer or model. This would add to Jolyne's anger at Jotaro - not just for his neglect of her but also the toll it's taken on her mother. Her not being present during Stone Ocean could be due to health issues to parallel Jotaro's condition and the Gucci one-shot. I think she's generally a quiet and graceful woman and hasn't always been able to stand up for herself much; creative and brilliant but also unsure of herself esp when she was younger.
I'm not gonna dwell on this point too long because it makes me angry, but I don't think her marriage to Jotaro was ever that good. They were both quiet and got along decently, but I don't see much emotional warmth or openness there. Tbh, I question why Jotaro decided to marry and have a child if he was just gonna neglect them due to 'dangers', but who fucking knows lol. Anyway, I think their marriage was distant and sad and Jotaro did not open up with a baby like Jolyne's mother hoped he would. Instead, he left her to do all the hard work, showing a real disregard for her and Jolyne 😒 You'd think he'd be more empathetic to single mothers with absent husbands and wouldn't want to put his own child through that but apparently not! 🙃 I think, before his neglect of Jolyne, she rarely challenged Jotaro and instead accepted whatever he wanted. But when his distance started to include Jolyne, an innocent child who needed him, she had had enough and started demanding better. I think him failing to show up while Jolyne was dying in a hospital was the final straw. She was the one who filed for divorce, and when she demanded custody he didn't contest it.
Moving on - she of course deeply loves her JoJo even with all the hardships and doesn't want her daughter to repeat her parents' mistakes. She's a very accepting mother, encouraging Jolyne to express herself and stand up for herself. She's relieved that Jolyne hasn't inherited her quiet and anxious personality, treasuring how bold and open she can be and always working hard to encourage that. She was always accepting of Jolyne’s emotions, letting her vent and making sure she didn’t repress her feelings. To keep up with her unruly and wild daughter, she became more confident and assertive over time. She had to be a strong woman to raise someone like Jolyne and she found her daughter inspiring during some of her lowest moments. And while she never got the chance to know this, Jolyne was inspired by her in turn.
Even with her anxiety, career and general stress - she does as much as she can to give Jolyne a great childhood. She's happy to dye Jolyne's hair and style it however her daughter wishes. While she's not use to the style in her own fashion, Jolyne's mother does her best to make cute little punk outfits that Jolyne adores and proudly shows off to everyone. She brought Jolyne to a shoot one time, curious if her daughter would be interested, but the girl only got up to trouble and pointed out how uncomfortable and uptight it all seemed. On the drive home, Jolyne expected her mother to be furious or upset but instead she just burst out laughing at her daughter's bold antics and comments. It was clear Jolyne was NOT gonna turn out like her mother and that brought the woman a lot of joy and relief.
Sorry to say, but I think she's a Disney adult 😞 While they don't get to visit too often, I think the duo absolutely go to Disney World when possible and I think Jolyne's mother styled Jolyne's buns to look like Mickey Mouse ears. She is a fanatic for the old princess movies, their dresses inspired her to get into fashion and she watched those films with her own mother so she repeats that tradition with Jolyne. She knows Jolyne doesn't really give a fuck about those old movies and that does make her a bit sad, but it means a lot that Jolyne at least tries to sit still and pay attention as best as a child can. Watching those movies and going to Disney World brings out a new side to her in Jolyne's eyes; her mother seems so giddy, is fine with the large crowds and becomes so emotional over the romances. While Jolyne doesn't understand why her mother likes these movies and does get embarrassed by her obsession sometimes, she usually agrees to go meet the princess actors so that her mother has an excuse to see them as well (plus the park is still a lot of fun and exciting). And yes, her mother does see the actual princesses when Bohemian Rhapsody happens and she cries lol
Jolyne has a phase where she becomes deeply interested in marine life, largely inspired by Jotaro's career and interests. Jotaro took her to an aquarium once or twice and got her a book - she then became obsessed. Part of this enthusiasm was that she wanted to impress Jotaro and connect with him, wanted to find a way to make him stay this time. So Jolyne immersed herself in marine biology and tried very hard to show off her knowledge, desperate for her dad's approval. But he still left and, not wanting Jolyne's genuine interest and enthusiasm to be soured, her mother took time off work to take the girl to an aquarium herself, asking questions so her daughter could tell her at least. Jolyne barely spoke the entire time, and the next day her mother found the marine life book in the trash.
The two are obviously very close, but an absent parent can still be disastrous for a child. That's why Jolyne's delinquency hurts her so much - she really wanted to be enough for Jolyne to stop her going down a bad path, but believes she isn't. She endlessly tries to get through to Jolyne but just doesn't know what to do. Eventually, the lectures and emotional turmoil makes Jolyne a bit distant, especially compared to when she was younger and almost seemed afraid to be away from her mother. She still loves her mother and their relationship isn't bad necessarily, but it is strained and her mother fears one day Jolyne will shut her out like Jotaro. Jolyne's mother holds onto far too much guilt over their family situation and her anxiety is affected terribly. She always did the absolute best that she could and was a fantastic mother even if she didn't always know what Jolyne needed and I will die on that hill.
I hate to even think about her experience during Made in Heaven. Surely, she would've known her ex and daughter were at the center of it - while Jotaro hid a lot from her, I think in that moment she just knew. I'm sure she tried for hours to contact either of them, the phone lines jammed and the roads a dangerous mess. How would anyone have felt during that whole event, let alone a mother worrying for her child? My headcanon is this - despite her condition, anxiety and the sheer risk of going outside, she set out on foot to find Jolyne. She had no direction or idea of where to go but she had to try. She knew the world was ending but she needed to find her daughter no matter what. And sadly, I think she died searching, hoping her JoJo would somehow be OK.
In the new universe, Jolyne's mother is still separated from Jotaro, but I think it ended on much better terms. Irene only mentions visiting her father on the trip, so I assume her mother lives elsewhere. She met another partner and her life is generally freer from hardship and stress. With a partner and Jotaro's help in raising Irene, I like to think she achieved her dreams that she had to give up on in the OG universe. Maybe it's sappy, but I really want to believe that life is just nicer to her in the new universe and that her and her daughter remain as close as ever ❤️

Ramble about Songbird and my V (truly, this is a ramble, it will not make a lot of sense, actually it will make zero sense) BECAUSE VALERY AND SO MI HAVE A REALLY SIMILAR BACKGROUND, AND I AM SO UNWELL ABOUT IT and not a native English speaker.
TBH I JUST ADORED HOW WELL I CAN FIT THE DLC AS A STORY FOR VALERY TO FIGHT PAST DEMONS, both for the circumstances that remind her a lot of her corpo past (that party was SOMETHING ELSE, AND VALERY WAS NOT HAVING A GREAT TIME), and how she sees herself so much in Songbird, and not for her fighting for survival as So Mi always tried to sell to V (at least not for the relic per se, even if So Mi actually gave Valery a new hope about her survival, V remain skeptical about it all the time, cause V won't do anything if Johnny doesn't get to survive too), but just for their general way of surviving things that life throws at them, and how they can be seen as shady and troublemakers and traitors and...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay, this part! GOD, THIS PART! So it was joining the government or being captured by NetWatch at fucking 19, and that's how my V also got to Arasaka, someone offering a 17 year old girl a work she couldn't refuse or she will get killed by some gang members she had been spying (also because Arasaka forced her), and... idk, I just know that Valery felt such an understanding for So Mi and she immediately entered the few people V actually cares for and loves and "trusts", but there's also this other thing:
V never really entirely trusted her (even if at the end she didn't trusted the cure and actually trusted So Mi), because they are so similar! At first V didn't notice this, she was just keeping her guard up for everyone in that mess because government™, but the more she talks to So Mi and gets to know her it just hits V that she actually doesn't entirely trust her because she wouldn't trust herself... but by that point she also doesn't care, she is totally on her side for that deep understanding of her, even the parts So Mi tries to hide, and I ADORE THAT because V would like for someone to help her as she helps So Mi in spite of her flaws, and maybe here we can also fit that dialogue where So Mi mentions her egotist and V also relates to that.
I JUST ADORED THEM, MY BEST GIRLS! BESTIES THAT DO TRAUMA BONDING AND SHARE THE SAME PROBLEMATIC TRAITS. GO DISAPPOINT PEOPLE TOGETHER AND KILL EVERYTHING YOU TOUCH.
There's also this interesting part about how all the people Valery actually cares for and most importantly, trusts and feels like they can understand her just end up really bad, either the relationship is messed up or they straight up die:
Jackie dies. Goro dies. Johnny is already dead and they can't be together. So Mi lies to her and betrays her.
(And don't get me started with how it would be if Valery-that-accepted-Arasaka-deal meet So Mi...THE UNDERSTANDING, THE ANGST, THE GUILT, THE CONSEQUENCES. I maybe could write a fanfic about it)

Oh bro, scarlex #4evaaa 😤😤 (the ART for that pairing bro lmao, I love women for their weird passions so much). I am considering an AO3 account purely to do a chapter by chapter review/commentary for you lololol. I probably should just do it, the whole reason I haven’t is some teenage-born fear of the cops somehow interrogating me for some unrelated shit (????) and this sort of tomfoolery comes up bc they’ve seen my phone shit and next thing you know, dateline has me on blast for my risqué reading tastes smh 😔 it does not make sense in any way (like gorl it’s too late for your online trail, you’re already ruined) and I need to get over myself lmao
and no need to apologize for not writing his POV, you gotta do what you gotta do, bro. But I share the sentiment of “oh this absolute biTCH BOI” when I read his thoughts Lmfao. Friggy’s lack of a part 2 was devastating. I am unwell over it. I need Allison to have some goddamn agency. I have since branched out in my search and looked at ffn for content 🙂 which brings me to my next questiooooon, have you read a story called Cold Hands? It’s the first of a 3 part series, and although the premise had me kinda like ehhhh, I think it’s pretty good! I’m only just in the second part, but it’s a good time.
I would actually die if I had to interact with murder crab men tbh. It couldn’t be me, would simply perish of fright, so I’m glad you understand LOL.
Bro the space pond- that shit was delightful. I ENJOYED that, like Charlie needed a win and now she has a little spa/swimming pool/ oasis situation she’ll hopefully get more access to 😎 the tail, shit, I’m about here like 👀what that tail do👀👀
You should definitely feel free to post from that board of ta’kesh 👀 I am curious. also, finding out you are into mando is so funny when seeing the similarities between mandalorians and Yautjas 💀💀💀that shit killed me, I was like this woman knows what she’s about!
I look forward to more good soup 😊

me reading your play by play if you do (but also I understand cause I’ll cry if I’m ever traditionally published and someone’s like ‘hey did you write about fcking the predator’)
I haven’t heard of cold hands but now I wanna check it out!!
the tail do {redacted} ☺️ and yes mando (read masked men) in general really do it for me — probably has to do w years of trying to decipher and cater to others’ emotional swings and loving the idea of Not that🤪 and then them being absolutely ruled by a strict code that they then twist or break for the sake of affection????? halfway point only friends character rankings
(i am bad at rank so i tiered them, also i don't dislike any character this is more a scale of how many hours i lay awake thinking of them)
tier one: ray
ray: I think anyone looking at my only friends posts can immediately guess who my favourite character is and why. ray is THE character for me, i knew in the first episode before the title sequence that he'd make me extremely unwell (his "being known as a burden who is either professing his love for anyone who cares to listen or begging people not to leave him in his drunken desperation" captivated me ok) . besides relating to parts of his characters and story, i am thoroughly invested in this man and his emotions. like will he fall victim to the cycle he's already convinced he's doomed by? will he find a way out? will he continue living as self-fulfilling prophecy purely out of spite for himself and everyone around him? will he get better? can he get better? will he ever want to????????? i think i always had the potential like ray as a character but i also think the actor plays him in a way that has altered my brain forever (like i am not good at reading faces but the look on ray's face sometime feels like im looking into his thoughts, its thrilling) deciding to play ray as layered and complex and oosing with pain no matter the circumstance was a choice that made the character for me, and i also think it takes a lot of skill to have an asshole insult everyone close to him and ruin relationships he has no buissness ruining for most of his screentime and have the audience come away with "wow that guy is absoultey dripping in pain, i feel so much for him"
tier two: nick, boston, mew
nick: i love nick so much, maybe its my thing for pathetic little guys but something about him makes me scream throw shit whenever i see him. i'm obssessed with all the crime he commits, because he's such a cutie about it. like watching him get all sad listening to the topboston tape fully sympathizing with him and his little sad face to the point i forget he only has the tape cause he WIRETAPPED BOSTONS CAR. just excellant character, i hope his crimes being revealed leads to him looking more pathetic and then becoming 5x more evil but 10x more cute about it (i also am desperate to know what comes of him chasing after a man who has made it clear so many times he doesn't want him only for nick to fall harder like what is up with that)
boston: boston has always been a favourite character of mine because he may not be a good friend and he may not be a good person but one thing he will NEVER not be is entertaining. like if he is on screen your ass will be tuned IN, and for that reason i love him. what i want to see from boston in the rest of the series? i think he is an interesting case of how far is to far when it comes to friends doing you dirty, and im interested to see what the lasting impact to his relationships are and then the impact to how he views relationships in general. i think it'd be nice if there were consequences that made him reavaluate the way he treats other people, but i also find it absolutely necessary for him to retain his sluttiness. like it doesnt hurt anyone else, and i think he genuienly enjoys it, so i hope he keeps it along with his love for photogrphy (would love to see him get more into getting consent of people before he records them and spreads that around tho) stay messy my king 🫡
mew: mew was my designated little guy after watching the first episode but kinda got lost in all my love for sandray. i will say he shot back up towards the top after seeing this one post (i cannot find it now its lost under the thousands that have been posted since) about mew, control, and bdsm (and all the new meta that has come out since too tbh). also realizing around epsiode 4 we knew absoultey nothing about him as a person had me watching everything he did like there would be little clues left. i think its safe to say after episode 6 that the relationhip between sex and control will continue to be interesting as well as WHATEVER THE FUCK HAPPENS TO MAKE HIM ACT UP LIKE THAT IN THE BATHTUB anyway... i am here for his villain?? era
tier 3: top, sand, cheum
(again i tiered them cause im not good at straight ranking and this doesn't mean i like them any less its just they make me personally a little less insane then the others do)
top: i think he needs to be topped by mew and that it has the potential fix him, i've thought about this a lot (A LOT) and thats all i have to say.
sand: i am still kinda obsessed with him, like don't get me wrong. i like the way he mirrors the other characters while still maintaining traits that are specific to him. the fact that he has his heart broken by the belief that ray didn't truly care about him and only saw him as a distraction, distinced himself from ray, took insults and physical attacks from ray, and STILL chased after him because he knew ray was in an unsafe headspace speaks to how strong this guy is, cause you saw everyone else in that bar abondon ray to whatever self-destructive thing he decided to do next but not sand, never sand. anyway maybe its because i relate to ray so much that whenever i see sand on screen or think about him my mind gets overtaken by hearteyes (this is my way of saying i don't have many coherent thoughts about sand in my brain theres just 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰) anyway i can't wait to see how he develops, if we meet the sandtop mutual ex and what chaos that brings, and whatever the fuck happens with the sandray codependency dynamic and i am dying to know if he does indeed have something in his past related to driving under the influence and what it is about ray specifically that made mr "i can seperate love and sex" into the character we see now
cheum: my girl isn't in the show as often but whenever shes on screen with april i have to smile. anyway i wonder if we'll get an explaination as to why shes always presurring the rest of the friendgroup into monogamous relationships or if thats just who she is (i do think her lying to april about how she feels in order to keep them together at all costs was an interesting detail in all this, like is she scared of what it means to be single/alone, does she feel intense pressure to be in a certain type of relationship, etc)
anways this is inspired by @thatgirl4815 and my autocorrect broke so sorry if this makes now sense

So, I'm ace and have known it for probably over a decade at this point (I'm in my mid-twenties). I also have a condition that I have had to take hormones for, for not quite as long, but still a long time. It always makes me so nervous talking to doctors about hormones and my reproductive system in general. I haven't told any of them I'm ace yet, and tbh I'm scared to. I don't want them to try to fix me or just generally make me feel like shit about myself. I've been on and off of different hormones anyway and am still ace as hell.
Just recently I got some test results back, and it seems to be getting worse, meaning the meds I had been on the longest weren't even doing anything. I stopped taking them and felt no different't, so that was a rip off.
I recently started seeing a new doctor and taking these supplements. I had really high hopes, but then I just felt awful. I felt really weird, and I'm just gonna say it, but I was kind of wondering if it was a sex drive. It's kinda hard to tell, since it's not directed at anything, and I'm sex repulsed for the most part. But I felt legitimately unwell, and I just know I don't want to feel like that again, so I stopped taking the supplements for a few days, and as of right now, I still haven't taken them again, cause I'm scared (and I'm feeling a bit better now).
The thing is, I actually really like this Dr. cause she legitimately seems to care. She's very attentive and wants to actually work with me and try to get me better, so I don't have to be on meds forever. I see her again in a couple days, and I'm so nervous. Obviously I have to say that I wasn't feeling well with the treatment, but I'm nervous that if I describe it, and it turns out it is a sex drive, I'm just going to feel like an idiot, then I'm going to have to explain myself. I don't even want to mention sex drive, because on the flip side, what if it's not that? Then I still look like an idiot. I really wanted this Dr. to help me, but since she is so meticulous about things, I'm afraid it will come up at some point, and that will inevitably lead to a very uncomfortable conversation and God knows what else, and it scares the shit out of me.

Put this in Splatoon 2 last night (and then someone else found me!) Please excuse the bad...handwriting? I did it with the joycons on a controller. I’m not used to writing that way.
For real though, the angst is starting to take Submas away from me. I was a fan before PLA, and the constant barrage of angst makes me feel like I can’t enjoy something I once did. Submas was something I enjoyed because canonically they were just running the Battle Subway and nothing else, and there wasn’t much angst in fan content (on here anyway). It was helpful to have something like that to get a break from stress and things IRL.
Here comes my experiences and opinions.
First of all, gatekeeping is stupid and I’m not trying to do that here. People are going to make the content they want of they characters they want, and I’m not telling anyone to stop because that’s not my place. Notice how this isn’t a “Stop the angst!” post? It’s just me talking about personally being tired of it and I recognize it is my responsibility to find or even create content I would enjoy. If you’re into the angst or even s*xyman stuff, I’m not calling you out or telling you to stop. But if you think that I am and send me messages putting words in my mouth/message about things I’m not saying, or try to start an argument, I’m not going to respond.
PLA came out, and it’s bad enough that PLA doesn’t give answers or an ending. But then there was a resurgence in Submas fans, and so many of them jumped on the angst, making a canonically sad situation sadder, or in some cases, as sad as possible...There also have been some problematic depictions reemerging (often just with different context than in the early 2010s).
It’s to the point where I don’t seek out Submas content because it’s hard to find content that is just fun or slice of life. Sometimes you see this kind of content with PLA Ingo...but I don’t want to see PLA Ingo. I want to see Ingo back where he belongs. It’s been over a month since I last played PLA (I finished it other than rematches) because I was burnt out on it in general as well as the lack of conclusion and confirmation that Ingo would be OK. But the angst has been burning me out far more than the actual game, and far faster than the actual game did. Even if I find one art post depicting Submas from 5th Gen, I have to scroll through a bunch of content I don’t want to see along the way. I don’t need to see post after post of angsty headcanons. I don’t need to see multiple alternate universes where Ingo died anachronistically in Hisui and the aftermath of Emmet finding out. I don’t need to see Emmet sobbing or acting extremely unhinged and out of character.
I’ve now seen at least two Submas things in Inkopolis Square in Splatoon 2. Neither were angst, but they made me feel anxious anyway because of everything I’ve seen since PLA, even when I don’t go looking for Submas content. It often gets recommended to me on sites now, jammed into my feed without any way for me to opt out.
Tbh I’m starting to wonder how many people are going to stay on the Submas train if a DLC comes out and Ingo goes home, we get confirmation he does in a future game, or he’s just in a future game with Emmet and is OK with no references to or indication that the events of PLA even happened to him. Or even if we don’t and we just move into Gen 9, into a post-PLA era. Or if Gen 9 has a different s*xyman (or if one emerges elsewhere and takes this site by storm). I know that a lot of people genuinely like Submas and angst; this isn’t about them. This is about the people who have said they just came here for the angst (I've seen this), the people who romanticize being unwell and think Ingo got a “glow up” because he now looks disheveled and miserable (I’ve seen this too), and people who would not have taken interest in Ingo/Submas if Ingo had not been in PLA the way he is. If Ingo is canonically fine later, how many of these people will stay when the angst train derails? If another s*xyman drops, how many of these people will stay?
Again, I’m not trying to gatekeep. I guess I’m just wondering how many people got into Submas for the potential of a sad story and angsty fan content, in turn making a majority of the content angst, and making it hard for those of us who didn’t want it, and are going to move on the second that potential is gone, has run its course, or another “sad” character is introduced.
In the meantime, I have to keep doing what I’ve been doing; avoiding the tags, avoiding most content, and if it gets too bad, I might have to start blocking even tags.
It just hurts to have something I enjoyed taken from me by other people who enjoy the same thing.

Could you talk about Daniel? Like please :( Whatever you want (headcanons, what you like and don't like, him as a character, the impression he gave you first time reading it, opinions in general, if he works well as a character, whatever you like. Give me some crumbs people. Just, like, discuss anything. I'm unwell, I am obssesed, I love his masochist ass. I need something, *anything*. Devil's Minion, or whatever you would like to talk about! (If you do want, that is). Thanks in advance :(
Oh, what an ask! I'll do my best for you. <3
I feel like I talk about Daniel a lot actually, if you haven't already peeked my Daniel Molloy and Armand/Daniel tags! Still working on perfecting my tagging system though, bear with me.
When it comes to Daniel, it's interesting because AR didn't give us much on him, so it can feel very fanon/headcanon territory sometimes as opposed to cold hard facts. But she gave us enough.
Likes/Dislikes
I honestly don't think I dislike anything about him! Maybe if he'd gotten more screen-time I'd have had a chance to come up with something.
I think my favorite Daniel quotes sum up (at least partially) why I enjoy him so much. He's inquisitive, daring, sharp as hell. And still so painfully innocent. It hurts. He was just a kid!
First Impressions
Can't lie, baby me wasn't too impressed with Daniel right off the bat. I started the series out of order with TVA (which explains a lot about me tbh I think), and being introduced to Daniel as a character via Armand's traumatized, depressive, disassociating perspective isn't great.
Then I read B&G because I had to know what happened with Marius and Armand (fucked myself over there), but hey Daniel's also here! And it's not... great. But then, I went back to the library, got the first three books, and binged them through in order and met Daniel the way Anne had intended us to.
I was way too young (12-13?) to appreciate themes that weren't spelled out for me, i.e. the S&M and D/s dynamics. I just thought "Oh, this is dark and sad and also hilarious... shame he goes crazy and we never see him again, I guess." Older teenage me had her come-to-Jesus moment with Devil's Minion now that I knew what I was looking at... and I just- still to this day- I can't believe Anne did that in 28 pages. Just doesn't make sense. Objectively, I think it's the best 28 pages she ever wrote. It competes with a few other VC passages for my all-time favorite, but I wholeheartedly think it is the overall best.
The older I get and the more I experience life, the more I understand Devil's Minion, and VC in general. It's such a brutal and exquisitely beautiful story. And Daniel is such a fucking great character. AR was so incredibly skilled at intertwining the human experience into her work even in the most ridiculous of scenarios (i.e. rockstar vampires), and it absolutely shines through with Daniel Molloy and Devil's Minion.
Re: headcanons, I have several already but feel free to let me know if there's any particular ones you'd like to see!

on bela: i don't even know how to feel, i'm so conflicted, right, cause in s1 she was my favorite (i couldn't even tell you why, she's not even really the kind of character i usually gravitate towards but smth about her was so charming, i was obsessed with her) and now.. i am just sad. don't get me wrong i still love her sm and i actually appreciate that she's making so many shitty mistakes bc, that's life, and that's part of growing up and learning to become a good person, but GOD i am sad -dan
Oh I feel that, you have every reason to be sad. I was hoping we might have hit rock bottom with Bela already and would start on a positive arc but nope, there was more!
The one reason I'm still... well happy isn't the right word but content with Bela's stuff is because I genuinely believe hers was the best written. Did it hurt, god yeah and she really tested my "support women's wrongs" stance. Girl did soooo many things wrong this season and these last two stunts with the Foxy and Georgia didn't help. But I do feel like the puzzle pieces all fit together and we have been leading up to this. During her last scene at first I thought she'd try and go back to the Catullan, but I suppose wanting to essentially run away is similar, in a sense.
Tumblr media
Also in that last scene we saw the self-awareness she's been lacking all season, and that was reassurance that she does feel it, it's just too terrifying to face. And in that not only is Bela's story the most well-written but the most emotionally poignant. It sucks right now because she's in such a bad place and her future up in the air, but I this last scene made me have hope for the future. And, tbh, turned her into a much more interesting ch for me. This is how Bela has really arrived for me, with her broken admission that all she's ever wanted was to be liked and she messed it all up. Like, I just find it satisfying, despite feeling for her, how everything piled up to land her here. I especially appreciated that we acknowledged her 1.8 GPA and general lackluster academics because she more than anyone has been ignoring that and it should matter.
I feel like such an ass for saying her misery is by far the best storyline lmao but it's clear to me that most care was put into Bela's arc. And sure, that arc has been a downfall pretty much all season and those are inherently not fun to watch with chs we like and root for but at least I have something to root for, you know? No other character has made me feel so much for them this season than Bela did in that one scene. That was just so raw, you know? Like damn girl yeah you really have messed up, now let's put you back together. I'm really excited for Bela in season 3; I mean the only way from here is up surely lol.
There was also her throwaway line about being treated worse at the Catullan than she did Georgia and ashkjjs I'm so unwell about that, someone get this girl help.

Hi! Hope you’re having a good day - mines been pretty shit tbh so if the tone of this is dumb I’m sorry and it’s also very long and rambling so feel free to ignore but I’m just kind of shocked to see you defend being bdsm (aka being against the sexualisation of abuse and violence particularly against women)?
Like ‘what a man does in the privacy of his own home is his own business’ has always been peoples response to mens abuse. I just don’t understand how is it not incredibly fucked to get off on abuse? How is the physical damage done when strangling/beating/hurting someone in one of the millions of ways people (men) hurt each other (women) different when done consensually? If my boyfriend hits me during sex why is it a big deal if he does it during an argument if he didn’t even hit me as hard during the argument as he did in bed? What if he strangled me in bed (something that could kill me and is one of the biggest indicators that a man will kill you) then hitting me isn’t actually that bad in comparison considering the level of harm. What is the difference between ‘after care’ and bringing your girlfriend flowers after hitting her? How does it not create the same trauma bond? A lot of people into bdsm make it very clear that they are mentally unwell (not judging, I am too just different poor coping mechanisms) and I just don’t see how being a masochist different from self harm. How is bdsm not the biggest example of rape culture? How can you recognise the patriarchy’s influence on so many womens choices but not the choice to want to submit sexuality? How are teen girls supposed to cope with their boyfriends literally wanting to beat and rape them but all the adult sources around them are telling them thats totally normal and not dangerous they just need to consent? Because teenage girls are amazing at enforcing their boundaries and totally don’t give in to peer pressure or do things they don’t want to do for male approval. How are you meant to break up with a man who you know enjoys and is capable of beating and raping you?
TLDR : I’m just trying to understand your perspective because it seems very contradictory to your other views like being against rape, violence against women, anti racist, anti incest ect. just everything that bdsm sexualises and normalises
No you're all good, I don't mind answering lol. I'm not letting this be reblogged for obvious reasons though.
I completely agree with you in that societally speaking, BDSM is constantly used to excuse violence against women and it's really fucked up to get off on hurting others, and any man that says they're into BDSM on principle should likely be in jail.
That said, I also think that in the context of consensual romantic sexual relationships between adults, it's possible to enjoy certain things on occasion that aren't super vanilla on principle. And, I'm not really talking about hookups here, I'm talking long-term relationships with people you trust lol. I'm also not giving teenagers sex advice and I think "blowjobs are empowering" feminism that young millennials and Gen Z was raised on did more harm than good to our perceptions of healthy sexuality, but the rumors are true: I, an unmarried adult woman, enjoy sex with people I romantically like and trust as people lmao.
But to clarify, I'm really not a proponent of anything truly extreme, and I'm extremely intentional about setting boundaries and if anybody crosses them, they get blocked and banned for life. I'm generally cool with trying sex positions, but both parties always have veto privileges if something is painful or uncomfortable or simply not enjoyable. And personally, anything involving metal, spanking or hitting, choking, etc. are all total no-gos for me and I will never be swayed on that. A light hand on the neck is not remotely the same thing as asphyxiation, and to even get to that point, I need to trust the guy.
And, I would never trust let alone fuck a guy who can't get off without that stuff! My point is that it's okay to try things out, whether that's basic kink or weird sex positions that you fall out of and laugh at yourselves, not what you do every single time you have sex. If a guy whines about women being boring in bed or "vanilla," kick the man to the curb lmao.
All that said, I would never tell women they're bad people if they are against stuff I'm personally comfortable with. My point is just that sex isn't like a cut and dry thing, and it's really healthy to communicate and discuss what you like and don't like with your partner.
Does that make sense lol?

headcanon 01 .
before i get started i wanna say i would like to do my best to be careful with these types of headcanons, considering these are real things that affect people daily. full disclosure that i suffer from a chronic autoimmune disease and have no intentions of offending anyone through this post. i simply saw the signs in him, and thought it necessary to incorporate into my portrayal.
that being said: tw for disease , death , blood , chronic illness , and chronic pain will be subject in this post .
alright i've been digging around all last night and all morning like a little gremlin and i found this post ( you CAN read this , but i'm not 100% on board with everything they mentioned so i'm gonna wiggle in my own version here! however, i'd like to put credit where credit is due) whilst trying to put a name to the symptoms itachi exhibits (which we MOSTLY see during his death battle with sasuke) including but not limited to :
blurred / double vision coughing blood chest pain (from the looks of it , it seems quite sharp) shortness of breath limping fatigue
along with this screenshot where "madara" points out that itachi took several medications merely to keep himself alive long enough to die by sasuke's hand and carry out his plan .
that being said, here is the symptom list copied from this site (everything from the site is under a blockquote) :
People who have MPA may feel generally ill and fatigued, have a fever, or a loss of appetite and weight. They usually also have symptoms related to areas of involvement such as rashes, muscle and/or joint pain.
so, this is isn't explicably explained in canon, but i am going to incorporate it more and more into my headcanons and portrayal. it's obvious that by the time of the fight (as well as leading up to it) itachi is unwell. "ill and fatigued" seems to fit the bill quite nicely. regarding his rashes and muscle/joint pain, these are common with a lot of autoimmune illnesses, and i'll say itachi deals with it quite frequently.
he fights it constantly to go about his objectives or even survive his day to day , but there are times when he falters , collapses , can't move , and is forced into rest/recovery mode by his body. this impacts his skill as a shinobi, especially as the disease makes its progression.
When MPA affects the lungs they may have shortness of breath or cough up of blood. MPA affecting the nerves may cause an abnormal sensation followed by numbness or loss of strength. Any combination of these symptoms may be present.
i'll not get too rowdy with this one since it's presented clear as day in canon as you can see his body start to shut down. ( examples : x & x ) but the idea of numbness also makes a lot of sense to me and the loss of strength becomes obvious .
here is another excerpt from this site describing the effects of MPA on the lungs.
Lung involvement can be a dramatic and life-threatening manifestation of MPA. When lung disease takes the form alveolar hemorrhage – bleeding from the small capillaries that are in contact with the lungs’ microscopic air sacs – the condition may quickly pose a threat to the patient’s respiratory status (and therefore to the patient’s life). Alveolar hemorrhage, which is frequently heralded by the coughing up of blood, occurs in approximately 12% of patients with MPA .
--
Kidney disease caused by MPA often doesn’t produce symptoms. Inflammation of the kidney may not be apparent to the patient until the kidneys begin to stop working. So it’s very important for the provider, in dealing with any form of vasculitis, to always examine the urine.
& here's another headcanon piece to work off of. not much to say on it considering the symptoms are silent, so it's not as if itachi would be aware it's happening, but who's to say this didn't have anything to do with his death tbh.
ALSO , all of this being said , i don't think itachi was ever officially diagnosed with this. obviously he knew he was ill and was doing his best to combat his illness by seeking what treatment he could, but without a proper diagnosis or the exact type of medication needed, ofc it would contribute to his ultimate downfall.
AND ANYWAY THIS POST GOT TOO DAMN LONG AND I STILL HAVE A LOT OF THOUGHTS AND THINGS TO SAY but i will stop typing now and proceed with my drafts bc i have work in 2 hours .

Hiya! I just recently found your blog and love your writing. Congrats on 700!! 🎉
I was wondering if I could please get a 🕊? (With either tasm! or mcu! Peter Parker, whoever you feel like writing about, if that’s okay) I’m a female and I use she/her pronouns. I'm on the shorter side, I have light brunette hair, and hazel eyes. I also have a lot of freckles and wear glasses. I'm into film and television along with music. I also love playing video games, reading, and writing. I'm currently trying to learn how to play guitar and I am a Psych major. Personality wise, I generally love to joke around and I’m a pretty positive person though I can be sarcastic and stubborn at times. I'm an INFP, a Gemini, and I'm pretty introverted, but I can talk a lot when I'm comfortable with someone or if I’m excited about something. I ramble pretty often tbh. I get anxious easily and I'm pretty clumsy. Thank you in advance!
you sound so fun, like you're definitely the type of person i would be friends with. i'm gonna do tasm!peter just because i prefer him, tysm for requesting! 🤍🦢 (help the fic is so self-indulgent i saw that you were a writer and that you ramble so i took that and ran with it by which i mean i shoved a bunch of information about my ocs in here lmao)
🕊 - send me a character and as much information about yourself as you’d like and i’ll write a blurb about what i think your relationship with that character would be like!
" - and then there's Leonora, who's something I've decided to call a 'darkling' just because they're completely black and white. Really it's just cause I want her to have film noir vibes, though. She's kinda like a femme fatale kinda character, and honestly I think she's one of my favorites even though she's nothing like me. And then - " You stop, realizing you've been rambling and Peter probably definitely doesn't care about what you're talking about. "Sorry, I'll shut up," you mumble.
Peter's eyebrows knit together in concern and confusion. "What? Don't shut up, I like hearing about your characters. They're really interesting."
You blink, surprised. "Really?" you whisper.
Peter smiles, laughing a bit as he comes closer to you. "Yeah. You've got a really great mind, I love hearing your ideas."
You smile shyly back. "Oh. Okay. Well, then there's Brynn, who I based off the dark academia aesthetic. She's just a human, which is kinda lame, but she's mentally unwell so she's interesting enough. She's got insomnia and she's an alcoholic because she's completely given up on life and fallen into a depression. She's also ace/aro."
"So do you just really like causing your characters pain?" Peter asks with a laugh.
"Yeah," you giggled. "It's not all of them, though, don't worry. Mostly just Brynn. She got all my issues."
"Who else is there?" Peter leans on his hand and watches you intently as you explain.
"Rosalie is Brynn's best friend, she's kinda like the complete opposite of her. She really just tries to help her get better with their mental stuff, they have a really sweet friendship. And then there's - " You stop yourself again, but this time it's not due to insecurity. "Thank you, Peter," you say quietly.
"For what?"
"For listening to me. Most people don't."
Peter leans close and caresses your cheek with his thumb. "Love, I'll always listen to you. I love you."
Annoying tears spring up in your eyes. "I love you too," you whisper, and you continue explaining.
