Anakin wasn’t one to mind a bit of dirt and grime, but for once, even he was excited for a good scrub. He could only imagine how Obi-Wan felt. Though, his many grimaces as they waded through knee-deep mud and large sweat stains appeared on their robes made it clear enough what he thought about their hygiene. The planet they were on was tropical, humid, and so much damper than Anakin was used to. Everything they came into contact with seemed to ooze something - sap, toxins, drinkable water. Their robes were likely stained beyond repair and Anakin’s master would sooner burn them when they returned to Coruscant.
All the layers of sweat and dirt would just make slipping into the cool river seem all the better, in Anakin’s opinion. After many long hours setting up their new camp, categorizing and stabilizing the specimens they collected, Obi-Wan had finally grown tired of Anakin’s tired complaining and sent him off to bathe.
The water was cool, but not cold. It ran just quick enough to form ripples on the surface, obscuring all that lay beyond the bright indigo flow. Anakin even found a perfect little nook in the bank with rocks he could sit on while keeping his shoulders and head out of the water. Whenever Obi-Wan pulled himself away from whatever worms or moss he was pouring over, he was going to be so pleased with the little restful space Anakin found.
Shedding his clothes with more fervour than ever before, Anakin made a half-hearted attempt to rinse them out and scrub some of the more uncomfortable stains out. He left his soaked robes on a sunny rock, though with the humidity he knew they might not dry all the way through. No matter, Anakin thought. Obi-Wan was likely to want to wash Anakin’s clothes again with his own when he joined him, and they could finish drying them by the fire that night.
Anakin reached over the river banks to grab his toiletry bag. He rifled around in it, grabbing a bar of soap. He scrubbed vigorously, wanting to wash off all the muck that had accumulated over his and Obi-Wan’s two-day hike into the wilderness, but he also wanted to get the cleaning over with. Then he would be free to chill out and relax until Obi-Wan joined him. His master was sure to be more efficient with his cleaning and then they’d be off to something more productive than lounging in the world’s most comfortable river. After nearly drowning himself trying to raise his foot high enough to wash it, slipping on his stone seat in the process, Anakin chucked the bar of soap back into his bag. He could wash his hair later after Obi-Wan joined him. Then he wouldn’t get accused of lollygagging this entire time.
Anakin sighed and slumped further into the lapping water, letting it tickle his Adam's apple. The currents actually tickled him on his legs too, around his ankles, then calves, behind his knees and his thighs and-
Anakin’s eyes shot open from where they’d fluttered shut, as tickles turned to insistent pressure. Anakin jerked forward, or he tried to shoot up, flailing as slimy strength kept his legs pinned to the rocks. His hands thrust into the water, and he frantically grabbed at what had grabbed him. It felt like roots or a stem. Smooth and slick but it pulsated with each movement. When Anakin jerked his hand away and out of the water, feeling it making a snap for his wrists, his fingers were covered in slippery mucus.
He tried to kick his legs and the thing just held tighter, wrenching his legs further apart. He tried to turn to claw at the river banks, and the tendrils wrapped around his hips, keeping him firmly in place. Anakin huffed and blustered. He had washed his undergarments with his robes; if he craned his neck he could see them, drying in the sun. He felt exposed and embarrassed. He wasn't scared though. He sensed no ill will from… whatever this was. He thought maybe it was a plant. And though he couldn’t see his master, he was only a few dozen feet away. If he yelled, Obi-Wan would come for him. (And surely scold him, after hauling his naked ass out of the river.)
Anakin jolted as the tendrils danced around his skin, seemingly feeling adventurous now that he stopped flailing as strongly. The smooth surface wiggled as it undulated across and around his legs. Some of the tentacles felt thin as a pencil, while others felt thick and sturdy. The way they tightened and then released, it almost felt like a massage. The sensation made his muscles quiver and then relax, and he found himself relaxing, tipping his head back against the bank. Whatever this thing was, it wasn’t so bad. He sighed and let out a little laugh. As the tentacles moved up his legs, they touched ticklish spots on his thighs, the crease where they met his hips and-
Anakin gasped when a tendril slid across his cunt, dragging across his clit. The smooth texture seemed to pulse as it touched his warmth and his legs were pulled further as it wriggled across him. He tried to wiggle out of its hold, but it only wrapped around him tighter, pulling him down a few inches. Anakin strained to keep his chin above water as the tendrils explored more of him. They tickled his stomach and belly button, reached up to brush his nipples and ran across the smooth scars under his pectoral. They almost seemed to scurry back down when they almost brushed the water’s surface. Anakin would have found it funny, maybe even a little cute, if he didn’t feel more and more tendrils working their way up his legs, holding him even more firmly in place.
He swallowed as a thicker tentacle prodded his cunt with more interest, curling and unwinding, spreading his lips and rubbing against his opening. Anakin stopped struggling, biting his lip as he felt a moan bubble inside his chest. The tentacle was gentle but firm, it felt about three fingers wide. Having felt that Anakin had stopped moving, the hold on his relaxed, and they wriggled almost excitedly. Maybe… maybe seeing what would happen wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world.
He glanced over his shoulder, trying to peer over the river bank to see if Obi-Wan was still preoccupied. He couldn’t see or hear him coming closer so he canted his hips, trying to direct this semi-sentient creature toward where he was growing slick and needy. Whether the tentacle actually knew where to go or whether it just stumbled upon it by chance, Anakin couldn’t tell and didn’t care. He let out a low groan as the blunt, round tip prodded his hole, twisting and squirming until it popped inside. It was broader than Anakin was used to starting with and it made his hole ache as it pushed further. But living in water made its surface slick and slimy, leaving little friction to burn as it moved. Once Anakin took a few deep breaths, relaxed further, and grew accustomed to it, it felt nice. It moved organically, random in its twists and jerks and thrusts. It was more exciting than any of the toys he kept hidden away in the Temple. Anakin gasped and laughed as the tentacle fumbled around, as it drew out and pushed back in, and other tendrils tightened on his hips - not quite like hands but equally as good. He couldn’t anticipate the next move; each zing of pleasure was a surprise.
Graceful but sure footsteps made him widen his eyes and try to sit up.
“You found us a lovely spot, Anakin,” Obi-Wan said. Anakin couldn’t twist to see him fully, but his master’s tone was appreciative. “How’s the water?”
“It’s-” Anakin swallowed and cleared his throat, as the vine twisted itself thicker and thrusted. “It’s good.”
Obi-Wan hummed. Anakin heard clothes rustling as he disrobed, then the soft splash as he stepped into the water and sat a short distance from Anakin. The Jedi, though they wore many layers, were not shy about their bodies; Anakin was certain that Obi-Wan was just as nude as he was, though his body was hidden amongst the rippling tide. What would he say if these tendrils were attracted to his master as well?
“You look flushed, Padawan,” Obi-Wan said, frowning slightly. “Did you want more privacy?”
Anakin shook his head. If he asked Obi-Wan to leave then he would have to explain why. Maybe not now, but later around the campfire. Plus, Anakin felt some of the thinner tendrils prodding at his hole as well, trying to work their way in, stretching him even further. As mortifying as it would be to ask for help, he might need it, should anymore try. “No, no, I’m fine. You can stay.”
Obi-Wan nodded softly but relaxed against the natural rock bench. He reached around to his toiletry bag and extracted a small bar of soap and began his ablutions. The light suds and bubbles further obstructed Obi-Wan's view of what was happening under the water as they floated past Anakin.
Anakin shifted and shuddered as he squeezed and his body was further explored. It felt like the tentacles were making their way… deeper. Like they unlocked something inside him, had worked him open, were plundering a place he’d never reached before. A place he hadn't let anyone else reach either. He couldn't hear it over the sound of the river, of his master scrubbing his skin beside him, but Anakin could feel the squelching, the obscene sounds that his cunt made as it was stretched and used. Anakin let out a whine as the largest tendril inside him curled so deliciously, brushing up against all the perfect spots inside him.
“Anakin?” Obi-Wan asked. Anakin pried his eyes open to look at his master’s questioning expression - his furrowed eyebrows and slightly pursed lips. “Are you sure you’re quite alright?”
Anakin tried to nod but let out a gasp as the tentacles surged upward, bumping against his walls almost painfully, knocking the breath out of him. His already red cheeks deepened as his eyelids fluttered.
“… Anakin?”
“Don’t be mad,” Anakin moaned. He spied Obi-Wan from under his eyelashes, watching as his expression went from concern to suspicion. “There’s… there’s something in the water.”
Obi-Wan’s eyebrows shot up. “What?”
“It’s not dangerous!” Anakin whined, even as he was subject to more erratic movement. “I think- oh! I think it’s a plant?”
“And what’s going on with this plant?” Obi-Wan asked. Anakin bit his lip. “Padawan! Tell me, now!”
“It’s inside me,” Anakin whispered. His whole body shuddered as the thin tips of the tendrils flicked and curled gently inside him, feeling almost like an apology for the batter-ram behaviour of the largest.
“Inside? What do you… oh,” Obi-Wan sputtered, cheeks growing red as his eyes flickered to the water’s surface then up Anakin’s pinkened chest and face. “Oh…”
Anakin swallowed. “Yeah.”
“Is it… is it hurting you?”
Anakin almost laughed. He would be sore tomorrow, and some of the movements weren’t exactly good. But these exotic sensations were so good even as they made him whine and made tears prickle at the corners of his eyes.
“No,” Anakin sighed. “No, Master, it’s… fine.”
Obi-Wan cleared his throat. “Do you want me to remove them?” Anakin shook his head. “Alright, do you want me to… leave you be?”
Anakin shook his head before he even thought about it. “Stay, please.”
Obi-Wan’s expression shifted from concerned and confused to something new and yearning. Something curious and hungry. Anakin had seen part of this look before, in recent months when they’d sparred, when they bathed together in springs and rivers, not unlike the one they were currently in, when Obi-Wan tucked Anakin’s braid behind his ear, almost pained, almost reverent. And the other part of his expression… was similar to how he looked when he found a new bug species, when he watched as some wild beast roamed the wilderness, when he watched some strange bacteria under a microscope, living, breeding, and dying all within the same hour. Despite claiming to have little knowledge of the living force, Anakin’s master so loved all the living things around him and wanted to watch, care for, and understand them.
His Master wanted to understand the things that were inside Anakin, the things that were making him gasp and whine openly now that he didn’t have to hide it.
“Let me feel,” Obi-Wan whispered and Anakin whined out a yes. He slid closer to Anakin and gently ran his hand - so wide and rough and gentle - down Anakin’s stomach, fingers twitching as they brushed over tendrils, as they carded through Anakin’s pubic hair until they reached where Anakin was spread wide around the tentacle fucking into him. Tracing Anakin’s flushed lips, he swore. “Fuck, Anakin.”
Obi-Wan’s thick finger pressed against Anakin’s hole, making him whine in discomfort as his body tried to let more in. But his master was kind and retreated, bringing his fingers to Anakin’s clit and rubbing soothing circles. Pleasure made Anakin’s hips twitch, even as they were locked in place.
“How remarkable,” Obi-Wan murmured, as a thin tendril reached up to wrap around his wrist, squeezing for a moment before unwinding. He pressed harder against Anakin’s clit, moaning as Anakin twitched and buried his head into Obi-Wan’s shoulder.
“Do that again,” Anakin begged, praying that Obi-Wan would listen and that the tentacles would follow suit. So far they seemed content to thrust in tandem with Anakin’s clenching, to twist as Anakin bore down, to push deeper every time Anakin just barely got used to their depth and girth. Mercifully, Obi-Wan obliged, mouthing against Anakin’s temple as he swirled his fingers. Anakin reached down to hold Obi-Wan’s wrist, keeping comfort and pressure as he moaned and convulsed, finally getting the sweet release of an orgasm, stuck between the smooth surface of the plant and the rough skin of his master.
For a brief moment, the plants seemed to still before they too shuddered, almost in ecstasy. Anakin let out a whine as they began to move against his sensitive walls.
“What is it?” Obi-Wan asked. Anakin glanced up and saw his wide pupils and flushed cheeks. He was sure that if he reached down into the water, he’d find his master hard and wanting. But his tone was full of that scientific curiosity that Anakin loved and loathed in equal parts. “What are they doing?”
“They’re-” Anakin swallowed, and furrowed his eyebrows. What were they doing? He tried to focus through the pulses of pleasure and the sweet ache of overstretching. They were… knotting themselves? Twisting? “I think they’re… bulging?”
Obi-Wan inhaled sharply. He reached down, petting Anakin’s puffy cunt and brushing against the tendrils. He hummed.
“I think you’re right, Padawan.” He looked down into the pellucid waves. “You know, I could… remove them, if you wished.” Removing most likely meant cutting through them, hauling Anakin out of the stream like a baby tooka that fell into a bathtub, before whatever the tentacles were attached to tried to fight back. Anakin sighed. It would be nice to stretch out on the bedrolls that Obi-Wan no doubt set up, to take a quick nap in the afternoon heat. Obi-Wan cleared his throat. “Or…”
“Or?” Anakin repeated, trying to be teasing, but sounding stupidly hopeful.
“We could… see what it does next. Purely out of scientific inquiry, of course.”
“Of course,” Anakin repeated, sounding breathless even to his own ears. He felt his pussy stretch as a bulge seemed to pass through a tentacle, moving up, up, up, until it had to squeeze through Anakin’s overfucked opening. He moaned when it popped in. Obi-Wan, still petting his cunt, must have felt it too. “Well… we are here on a scientific mission.” He swallowed as he felt more churning inside him. “We can’t abandon our mission.”
Obi-Wan mouthed against his temple again. Maybe by the time his curiosity was sated, he’d be ready to kiss him on the lips. “You’re absolutely right, padawan mine. We’ll just have to remember to write our findings later.”
Anakin almost giggled. He’d even let his master take pictures later if he wanted. So long as no one else ever saw them.

Open Starter - Exploring with Ghostday
"All right, I'm so ready to get the hell out of these offices, I don't know about you. They're so boring. The story is boring, most of the people are boring, and the office itself is boring," Ghostday complains - but not grumpily, more so with an edge of excitement, clearly illustrated by her rapid back and forth movements across the room. "You know I've already been outside several times, it's really not so bad out there, just gotta get used to the climate and the sky ads. Oh, and probably the insects. Those don't bother you, do you? Might wanna bring some bug spray just in case. Lots of little buzzy things. And spiders."
The ghost is clearly not dressed appropriately for whatever trek lies ahead. She is wearing a black pinstriped suit with silvery stripes, complete with vest and jacket. And her hair isn't pinned up - it's left tumbling over her shoulders in brunette waves that fade away into a ghostly bluish hue. The only bit of her attire that seems appropriate are the sunglasses - which she needs to block out the harsh sunlight (and because she just thinks they're cool, not to mention they were given to her as a gift) - and her rather heavy-looking black boots. Other than that, she looks like she belongs more at a cocktail party than hiking through a post-apocalyptic wilderness.
It doesn't bother her, though. She's wound up and ready to get out there and see what trouble she and her companion can get into.
"Maybe we'll get lucky and encounter a zombie or two, eh? Ehehehehe. I saw some of them before. Nasty things. Some of them were carrying around knives, too." She pauses to chuckle, then hurries to reassure her friend. "But don't worry, I'm can definitely take them on. Nothing's gonna hurt us out there, all right? Besides, the zombies are pretty stupid. They just run at you mumbling about coupons and deals and shit. It's friggin' bizarre, man."
"Right!" she says, clapping her hands together and forcing her train of thought back on track. "Let's get out there, shall we?"
Upon exiting the office, there are the following things that can be readily seen:
The ground, most of which is covered in a mixture of dirt and varying lengths of grass of varying species.
Insects and a few small lizards scurrying around here and there, many of which were not evolved at the time humanity ended.
An abandoned camp. There are tents and a couple of burned out fire pits. There are no people present, but this is because this is where the slasher zombies were setting up camp waiting for the inhabitants of the Haunted Office to venture forth and become their next victims. The zombies are gone now, thanks to the Lobster Mafia.
A pile of what appears to be garbage, which is full of artifacts from the world before it ended - shoes, purses, bottlecaps, scraps of clothes, some bits of unidentifiable plastic, rocks. It looks like it has been dug through and this is because Thursday has been picking through it and collecting colorful pieces of smoothed down glass and other interesting things.
Bushes, shrubs, brambles, vines, trees; all manner of flora.
No animals outside of birds and insects and the small lizards. Not yet. Or at least none that can be readily seen. Or at least nothing that resembles an animal.
In the distance, towering over even the tallest trees, are skyscraper buildings. Oddly enough, they tremble and sway in the breeze, looking at some points like they might break or topple over, but they don’t. They’re moving in a solid, fluid motion that’s baffling to the eye, like stalks of seaweed swaying in an ocean current. And when the wind moves just right, eerie howling sounds fill the air from all around, the sounds of the structures speaking to each other.
Smaller buildings scattered about haphazardly and with no visible pattern unlike the way humans would lay out their environment with careful planning. They are in varying states of decay, although some appear to be in great shape.
The sky, marred by checkered spaces filled in with ads that are playing on an endless loop. Anything and everything from cars, car insurance, homeowner's insurance, renter's insurance, health insurance, insurance for your pets, fast food, slow food, soda, beer, perfume, cologne, make-up, clothing, medicines, medications, salves, anti-aging creams, face masks, masks for each part of your face, toys, collectibles, and all manner of things in between. Thankfully the volume either appears to be on mute or broken, because there is no sound emitting from them.
Nothing else of note appears to be going on.
"Okay, partner, since I've been out here before, I say you pick a direction," says Ghostday, grinning and flashing her sharp teeth mischievously as her bright yellow headlight eyes glow brighter with excitement.

The Thesis and the Doctorate
**A/N: Alright chapter 3! I’m sorry it’s a day late, my family went to the rodeo so I wasn’t able to get it out in time. But it’s here now! Content-wise, I don’t have much to say for this one. Shit’s about to happen in this chapter (finally!) so buckle up kids. And in case this wasn’t obvious, I’m always open to constructive criticism or suggestions.**
Link to the story: The Thesis and the Doctorate
Chapter 3: Into the Unknown
The next day, you wake up determined. Today is the day. You’re going to go into the woods alone and you’re not going to chicken out. You got this. After a breakfast of champions, (cereal, because you need to go shopping again) you spend an hour getting your gear ready. You don’t want to stay out past 5 o’clock, which should be plenty of time to get your bearings, maybe collect a few samples, and get back to the cabin with daylight to spare. Into your pack goes a lighter, a knife, a compass, an emergency whistle, a nylon rope, an extra water bottle and snacks, a few sample collection bags, a notebook and pencil, a flashlight, a multitool, and a pair of extra socks. Though you’ve only been on a few trips into the field for research, you often used to camp with your family and you’ve learned the hard way that it pays to be prepared. You lace up your hiking boots, ready to go.
Eventually, you get in the car and drive to where you’ll be spending the rest of the day. It’s only about a mile outside of town, in the northwest quadrant of the valley. Even though it’s relatively close to civilization you wouldn’t know it from looking. As soon as you turn off of the highway and onto the service road, the trees close in around you, almost menacing with their shaggy, crooked branches... Stop it. You shake yourself out of those thoughts and focus instead on maneuvering your car over the potholes in the unpaved road.
You find a shoulder to pull off to and step out. Deep breaths. In, and out. You take a moment to observe your surroundings. Birds calling to each other in the trees, dust motes suspended in the sunlight, the warm earthy scent of growing plants. These are all good things. Take it slow, you tell yourself. As long as you’re not stupid, you’re safe. You take one more deep breath and then set off.
In the end, the day goes well. There were no accidents, no sudden weather changes, no bears. You leave with several pages’ worth of notes, and a few samples for later identification. You barely went out of sight from the car today, but you think tomorrow that you’ll go farther. There’s just so much to see, and something tells you that the deeper into these woods you go the more interesting they’ll get.
—----------------------------------------------------------------------------
After three straight days of venturing into the unknown, you’ve gotten pretty far. You had forgotten just how much you liked simply existing outside. And there’s so many interesting things to study! Your thesis topic, an investigation of the old-growth forests of the western Cascade Range, is very broad, which gives you the freedom to study basically whatever you can find. So far you’ve identified over fifteen species of trees, and that’s just within the last few days!
Slowly but surely you’ve made your way almost to the northwest rim of the valley that Gravity Falls is situated in. According to the topographic maps, the valley rim is a sheer cliff face over five thousand feet high which encircles the whole valley. And today is the day you plan to reach it. There’s not really a reason why you want to make it all the way to the cliff (it’s not like you’re going to scale it, and besides some geologic sampling, there’s not much to do) except that you think it would be cool. Five thousand feet is really tall- almost a mile straight up. You’d love to get some pictures.
Going in a straight line from where your car is parked, you begin walking northwest. As you do, you pass several waypoints from the last few days: a weird rock there, a creek here, that deer skull that somehow got halfway up that tree- a cougar, probably. Soon enough, you don’t recognize anything around you and increase your pace slightly. You really want to see that cliff, and if you get back to your car at dusk, so be it.
It’s around one o’clock in the afternoon when you notice that the woods around you have... Changed. The previously flat ground now slopes steeply upward, and the dry duff layer that you were walking on has changed to thick emerald moss with an abundance of mushrooms. Even the tree species are different. Instead of the usual pine and cedar you’re now noticing more and more deciduous species, growing so thickly together that you can barely see between them. You also see fireflies dancing between the trunks, even though fireflies are nocturnal and neither of the two species native to Oregon glow. Huh, that’s odd. Maybe they’re invasive? You push past them, higher up the hill.
At the top there’s a slight clearing. Sunlight breaks through the canopy and dapples on the soft grass. In the middle of the clearing stands a giant bigleaf maple tree that’s so covered in moss you can barely see the bark. You hurry up to the tree, already taking off your backpack. By your estimate, the tree must be over three centuries old, but you’re going to take a core sample to be sure.
You feel a tug on your pant leg. “Hey random lady, Jeff here,” someone says. You look down and see a tiny man? He’s no taller than your knee and that’s with the tall, pointy red cap he’s wearing. “What the heck are you doing to our tree?” He asks, pointing up to where the rubber handle of your increment borer is sticking out of the trunk. Behind him stand four other gnomes (you don’t know what else to call them. They certainly look like gnomes, exactly like the ones you see in gardens- down to the beards and hats.) that weren’t there a second ago. What the hell is going on?
“Uhh, taking a core sample? Where did you come from? Who are you? Were you following me?” You demand, words spilling out in a rush. You’re starting to get seriously creeped out, and the lecherous faces the gnomes behind “Jeff” keep making at you aren’t helping any.
“We came from the woods, lady. This is the Gnome Forest! And I told you, I’m Jeff, leader of the gnomes!” He climbs up to stand on the shoulders of the gnome behind him for emphasis, bringing him level with your waist. Trembley’s map was true! You shoulder your backpack, borer forgotten.
“Oh-kay. Well, I’m gonna go now, sorry for trespassing... It won’t happen again.” You plaster a smile on your face, stepping slowly away from Jeff and his friends. Henchmen. Henchgnomes? Whatever they’re called, you’re ready to leave. Before you can, one of the gnomes breaks from the crowd and scurries up to you on all fours.
“Queen?” He growls. What?
“What?”
Jeff, who had been arguing with a squirrel, turns back to you with a gleam in his eye.
“You know what Jason, that’s a great idea!” He stomps on the gnome he’s standing on and it waddles over to you. “Whaddya say, lady? Do you want to marry all of us and become queen of the gnomes? It’s a pretty sweet deal, let me tell ya. You marry all of us,” he pulls out a large ring from somewhere and holds it out to you, “Shmebulock officiating of course, and in return you get to do all of the laws, and be the most beautiful.” Jeff looked up at you expectantly.
You scratch the back of your head, trying to stealthily get your hand to the side pocket of your pack where there’s a canister of bear spray. You reach it- other pocket! Damnit. You need to say something.
“Sorry Jeff, it’s Jeff, right? Sorry, I’d love to but I have... Stuff back in town that I need to take care of and I really don’t think it’d work out,” you babble, trying to keep him distracted. There! You grasp the canister but keep it hidden behind your back. You resume backing slowly away, talking the whole time.
“That’s a shame sweetcheeks, it sure would make everything a lot easier if you’d just come willingly!” Jeff interrupts you, launching himself off of the other gnome and straight towards your face, sharp teeth bared. You whip up the bear spray, managing to get him in the eyes and sidestep so that he falls to the ground, screaming in agony. You take off running. From behind you hear Jeff shouting at the gnomes, and then roaring. It sounds like a bass boosted chipmunk, with rhythmic thumps signaling the footsteps of something huge. You’re too scared to appreciate how ridiculous it is, so you run.
And run.
And run, throat burning and legs aching, all the while the thumping and screaming getting closer, then-
Crack!
You trip over an exposed root, twisting your ankle as you faceplant into the moss. You lie there stunned, barely breathing though your lungs scream for air. A large shadow falls over you. You dig your fingers into the dirt and raise your head, turning it as far as you can. What you see makes you freeze.
A huge humanoid monster in the shape of a giant gnome stands above you. Jeff shouts down at you from his place atop it:
“Change your mind yet, sweetcheeks?”
You bare your teeth and scramble to stand. “Go the hell!”
Jeff shrugs at this, and before you can run or even turn away the monster’s hand shoots out to grab around your middle and lift you into the air. You’ve never really been afraid of heights before, but that may have just changed. Up close, you can see that the monster’s made up of individual gnomes holding on to each other and responding like a hivemind to Jeff. You wriggle and squirm but the monster’s grip is like iron.
You scream in frustration. “What the fuck, Jeff! Let me go! I don’t want to be your goddamned queen!”
“No can do snookums, you’re mine- I mean ours now!” He cackles. You fume in silence. You want to tell him your name just so he’ll stop calling you those stupid pet names, but it’s probably for the best that he doesn’t know. If he was tracking you through the forest this whole time, your name would only make it easier to find you back in Gravity Falls. Plus, you’re pretty sure gnomes are fae creatures and if you give them your name you might not get it back.
You replay that train of thought. Am I living in a story book now? You think, more than a little hysterically. Fucking- gnomes? Really? Of all the things that could happen to me in the woods, it was gnomes? You finally go out into the woods for the first time in years, and not even a week in you get kidnapped by gnomes. You want so badly for all of this to be some weird nightmare, but you know that’s too good to be true. Dreams could never be this vivid. What else exists? Fairies, unicorns- wait. Does this mean God exists? Which god? All of them? If the supernatural is real... You pull yourself out of that train of thought. Now is not the time for an existential crisis. You need to focus on escape. But how?
Ignoring Jeff’s ongoing monologue, you think back to the contents of your pack. Bear spray... Which you dropped when you started running. You also have rope, a lighter, a knife, and a whistle. You don’t think the rope will be useful, and based on the flaming torches you see beginning to line the path the monster’s taking you down, you don’t think that the gnomes would be afraid of your lighter. You also don’t trust your ability to defend yourself from a hoard of gnomes with only a knife. That leaves you with the emergency whistle. You’ve used it before to scare off wild dogs, who’s to say it won’t work on gnomes? Their hearing seems to be equally as good, at least from what you’ve seen of Jeff and his squirrels. But the whistle is hanging around your neck and your arms are trapped at your sides. How are you supposed to free yourself long enough to use it?
“Hey, Jeff!”
“Huh?” He stops talking and looks down at you.
“If I’m going to be your new queen, can I at least walk by myself? I can’t breathe with the way this thing is holding me,” you cajole. Jeff’s tiny hand strokes his beard like he’s trying to make up his mind. Please, please, please.
“I suppose... but you have to walk in front of us, slowly! And the second I see any funny business, it’s back in the hand for you, baby!”
You can’t believe he agreed, but you’re not one to look a gift gnome in the mouth. The monster can’t put you down fast enough. You’ve got one shot and if it fails you’re out of options. As soon as your feet hit the ground, you take a deep breath, raise the whistle to your lips, and blow as hard as you can.
One hundred and forty-two decibels is loud enough to damage your hearing; to the gnomes it looks positively torturous. Their monster instantly falls apart, sending the gnomes tumbling down around you. They’re writhing and clutching their heads and now is a great time to get away, except that you have to breathe, too. As quick as you can you take another deep breath, grab your backpack from where it had fallen, and start jogging away, whistling the whole time. The gnomes barely register the brief pause before the noise is starting up again, and none of them try to stop you. With both hands now free, you pop in the attached earplugs and the screeching is finally muted. It’s supposed to be audible for over two miles, so as long as you keep blowing it frequently enough, it should keep the gnomes off your back. You don’t think they’ll try to pursue you, but it’s better to be cautious.
After almost an hour of walking and whistling, you realize you’re probably safe now... And have absolutely no idea where you are. You think you’ve been walking east-ish, maybe? You haven’t seen the valley rim, so it can’t be north or west. Hurriedly, you take out your compass and orient yourself in the dying sunlight. Your heading is east, which is good. Unless the gnomes took you farther south than you thought, going east will get you into town... Eventually. You’re not sure how far you’ll have to walk. The gnome forest wasn’t on any map except Trembley’s, and you don’t remember the scale for that one. You thought it was all fake; why would you bother? A couple of hours ago, it was fake. Now, you’re sure it’s not just the gnomes that are real. There has to be more out there. But again, you shelve that particular crisis for later. Staying put isn’t an option. By your best estimate, you have at least ten miles to go tonight, on foot and in the dark. Alone. What if something happens? You could easily get lost, or your batteries could run out or you could get attacked by wolves- or what if you break your leg walking in the dark and you’re unable to move? No one is coming to look for you any time soon. You barely notice your heart rate rising, breaths coming faster. What if what if what if- you’re stuck in a loop you can’t get out of.
Crack!
A branch snaps off to your right. Your head turns so fast you swear something pops.
It’s just a deer. As soon as it notices you staring, it bounds off. You breathe out a sigh. You can’t afford to be paralyzed by fear. You can’t. You have to get out of here. It’s going to be slow and it’s going to suck absolute ass but you’ll be damned if you’re not getting out of this forest alive. You have a thesis to finish. You set your jaw and readjust your pack, using the whistle once more, the setting sun at your back.
—----------------------------------------------------------------------------
It’s fully dark now, and your many bumps and bruises have made themselves known. You’re not sure how long you’ve been walking. You’re pretty sure you twisted your ankle running from the gnomes, but you’re trying not to think about it. You’re trying not to think about a lot of things. You huff as you scramble up and over a log, tripping for what has to be the hundredth time. To your horror, you begin to feel tears gather at the corners of your eyes.
“Hello? Is anybody out there?” A man’s voice startles you.
“Hello-oo? We heard the whistling, are you in danger?” A younger voice this time, also male. You can barely think past the exhaustion to answer.
“He-” You cough, and try again. You finished your water a while ago. “Hey! I’m over here!” You shout, waving your flashlight.
“Grunkle Ford, there’s someone over there!” You hear the younger voice shout. You point your light towards the noise, and out from the shadows emerge two figures. A young teen boy, and- Stanford Pines?

Thank you Zee! 💜
6. signature/favourite scent?
I answered signature scent here and my favorite scent is probably lavender or roses. I like drying flowers and those two are my favorite. Wisteria is also pretty nice.
23. a story from your childhood?
Ooh okay, so when I was in like 3rd grade (10-11 years old), that's when they kinda tried to teach us some of America's basic history and in my area we focused on learning about the nearby tribes, about coming out West and the gold rush, the California missions and things, etc etc so we learned a lot about the 'western pioneers' coming out here in wagon trains. So every year, the 3rd graders in my town take a 'wagon train trip.' Basically we get assigned a partner and spend a few months getting the materials we need, making a wagon, decorating the wagon (though not too much), and then the class sets off from the elementary school on a Wednesday, heads up a trail that starts right across the road with the wagons, and basically hikes like 5-6 miles up to the campground on my road, stays there learning cool history and camping stuff the Thursday, and hikes back to school on Friday. The wagons are usually about 100-120 pounds, because we have to carry like everything in them. All the camping supplies, all the food making supplies, all the little rocks and sticks 10 year olds collect in the woods, all of it. And the parents are there to help, of course, each kid has to have one adult along with them, but they're more there as backup and supervision. It's mostly the kids hauling the wagons. Me and my partner's wagon was cool as fuck and honestly the best constructed wagon on our trip. We didn't have a single "wagon down" moment where shit collapsed and had problems. We used a wood hauling cart as our base, so it had tall sides to keep stuff from falling out (unlike, say, all the little red wagon bases other people had), and our wagon cover was canvas over willow branches, so it was pretty sturdy without being too stiff. We also had my dad the expert backpacker helping us pack lightly and efficiently. And because I live in the area, I'd already hiked the trails we were on many times, which was really helpful in keeping my spirits up every time we had to haul that thing uphill. So yea, it was honestly a really fun trip, it's something the kids around here look forward to in 3rd grade and it was always really fun gathering on the playground to cheer on that year's group setting off.
I'm bored, send me asks

Witchcraft : Pen Pal Edition
I love pen pals. The art of handwritten letters and little special gifts seems like such a thing of the past. Now that everyone is just an instant message away, sending a fun little gif to a friend across the world seems like the logical and least time consuming way to let someone know you’re thinking about them. But I personally love a messy handwritten letter with the faint coffee ring stain from their morning cup they had while taking a few minutes to write me. Or the little rock they found by the a river they just discovered that made them think of me because of that one time I mentioned a childhood memory of a camping trip by the river. Or the 50 cent gumball machine ring they got on their trip to the beach as a little “wanted to give you a piece of my memory too” trinket.
These a some of my most prized possessions. But I don’t have very many witchy pen pal friends. Most of my pen pals now are people I knew in childhood or older people who still enjoy the simple pleasures of writing and receiving a handwritten note. My grandma and I used to send each other letters too but she passed away earlier this year.
So I wanted to share with you all somethings I would send (and would love to receive), as a witch, in snail mail to witchy friends.
Plant Ideas
🌱 Seed Paper : There’s this really cool paper that you can bury and a plant will grow. It’s called seed paper. You can DIY it yourself or purchase it already made. Of course, my personal opinion, I think making it gives it that extra bit of magic and personal touch but if you do plan to buy it consider buying some handmade from Etsy.
🌻 Plant Clippings : Is it obvious that I really like plants yet? Lol. Plant clippings are fun if you’re sending a little care package via snail mail. It’s a way to gift a little piece of your home to your pen pal.
🌿 Pressed or dried flowers / herbs : You can include a little envelope of dried herbs or pressed flowers for you pen pal to use later in their spells or rituals. I love putting these in tiny envelopes because it’s usually just enough to use for 1 or 2 small spells and they can keep it in their Book of Shadows or journal.
Nature Trinkets
🍂 Rocks / Stones / Fallen Leaves : I’m always collecting these things when I’m just out and about. Especially if I’m out in nature with the intentions of enjoy it (like a camping trip or hike) and I know I’m gonna wanna share it with my pen pal. Hag stones or witches stones are one of my favorite things to gift my witch friends. I try to collect things that I know my pen pal might have trouble getting on their own. Like if they live in a more urban area they probably aren’t spending a lot of time in the mountains and would really appreciate some mountain rocks.
🐿️ Acorns : I could have included this in with the first one but I looovvee sending little acorns. Their magical attributions include luck, protection and healing among other things. I love sending a bit of luck :) I think we all have our things, and mine is acorns lol.
🐚 Sea Shells : This is something I love getting from my witch friends because I’m a few hours out from the ocean and I haven’t even been to the ocean in like 15 years! So this is definitely something you could share with your witch friends / pen pals who don’t have access to them.
Other DIY & Handmade Ideas
📚 Spell Kit : Include all the ingredients they’d need to do one of your favorite spells. This is fun for little spells that only need a small candle and a little bit of a dried herb. You could include a handwritten spell card they can add to their BoS with the spell and instructions on it.
🍒 Recipe Cards : Handwritten recipe cards with your favorite recipe. This is a super simple one but one of the most meaningful. Especially if you’re both from different background, areas and cultures. It’s so fun and new to try new food. This would be great for Samhain; share a recipes from your dumb supper.
☕ Your Favorite Tea(s) : Mine is Blueberry! Btw lol. Share a few different teas, included a little about why you love them. Another simple, but meaningful, gift to include.
I hope you enjoy making new magical friends <3

I live in the wilds of Pennsylvania, surrounded by trees, birds singing and fresh breezes, and a lake that extends for miles through the wilderness. I love to walk the paths and roadways that surround the lake and hike through the hills and valleys. I love to explore the grounds in search of little caverns or caves, I love rocks and unusual natural things. I collect the native herbs and cut fresh flowers. I live with my husband in a cottage that is near the lake. We don't see many people out this way and since the town is on the other side of the lake we a lot of times take our boat and head to town that way instead of driving the way around. If there are any other people up here they are, summer people, and only stay in the area till around Labor Day and then the land clears of any other people. We have wild animals that come around. Deer, rabbit, and even bear. We have learned to leave them be when they are near and just stay inside until they are gone. We keep all of our rubbish indoors so that we aren't feeding them and they don't come around too often.
But, it is not winter and I was wanting to pack a lunch and head out for a few hours exploring. I was walking down the roadway and enjoying the sunshine on my face and the sound of nature when about a mile from home I noticed an unknown vehicle parked. Everyone that camps up here for the summer has closed down their cabins and has gone for the summer. So I headed over to it and saw a shirtless young man sitting in the back of his van. I walked around to see if he needed any help and he was completely naked. Taking me by surprise, I said, "oh, excuse me". He was built like a brick shit house and handsome at the same time. I looked him over really good and noticed he was also quite hung.
He noticed me staring at him and a smile appeared on his face. I blushed and smiled back. "I'm sorry", I said. He said, "No worries". I went to leave and he asked if I had lived nearby and had a working phone. I said that I did and that he was welcome to use it. He was washing off and then getting dressed when I came across him and he said that he didn't realize that anyone was still up here and that he was happy that there was. His van broke down and he stayed the night in it, I could smell the smoke of a fire that had been wet down to be put out. He told me that he was going to hike around and see if he could either find someone or get to the town on the other side of the lake.
As he dressed, I noticed that he was just as hot clothed, as he was naked and was happy to escort such a good-looking man back to my place. I'll admit, the dirty thoughts were there.
My husband and I have an open relationship and always welcome a third party if that can be the case. We don't get out much because the city is so far away but we do have visitors come to stay with us. Another couple. We switch partners and just have a weekend of sex, drinking, and more sex. We have fires and have sex. We go swimming and have sex. I am a bottom, so I get to get under the other top all weekend long and it is nice to have someone else with my husband's permission. And I definitely want to get under this guy if I can.
We reached our cabin and I let my husband know who this man is and what the situation was and he led him to the phone. We told him who to call and the earliest that the tow man would be able to get out this way was 2 days from today and that he was the only mechanic in town and depending on what was needed for the van, it could take up to a week total for him to get it fixed. In the meantime, we had talked and had decided that I could have sex with him all that I wanted to if the young man was up for that kind of fucking. He was definitely straight but I have a way of getting men into bed that my husband just loves because it is always advantageous to us both.
We invited the young man to stay with us and he agreed since there were no hotels open now either. He didn't seem too concerned about our marriage and he was quite comfortable with himself. I love a confident man and he was really turning me on. He seemed to take a liking to both us and especially to me. I was in the kitchen cooking and he sat down at the table after I had told him to make himself at home. He asked if that meant to me as well. I turned and looked at him surprised and then told him, "yes". Again I blushed and he said it was cool and that he didn't have a girlfriend and could use a few good blowjobs if I were really interested. He knew that I was and I didn't have to say a word more.
We had dinner, all three of us, and then my husband retired to bed. I lit a fire in the fireplace and offered him a glass of wine or a beer. "I have liquor too if you prefer?" He said no because it gives him whiskey dick and he wanted to be hard for the occasion. I blushed again and giggled a little bit too. The excitement was rising up in me as it was rising in pants as he was thinking about having his dick sucked finally. He said it had been a while for him. I thought to myself how can such a great looking stud go without any sex? Then he proceeded to tell me as though he were reading my mind. He told me that he could see it on my face. I had to laugh this time.
"If you would like to get comfortable, please do", I told him. He told me that he is naked a lot when he is home and I assured him that would be no problem at all. He took his clothes off and folded them up neatly and put them on the sofa. I motioned for him to come to lay down on the floor and rest his body on the pillows. He did and as he walked, his manhood bounced freely back and forth as I watched and licked my lips. My mouth was watering like a flood. He noticed and commented that he appreciated the hungry looks from me. It made him feel good. He hadn't had anyone look at him like that for a long time.
We were instantly comfortable with each other. He rested himself upon the pillows and I looked at his thick cock and low hanging balls. I asked if I could taste him and instead, he motioned for me to come up to him and said, "I may be the man in this but I do have respect for you." He looked at me then moved in to kiss me. He kissed me for a long time and I rubbed his cock till it was hard as stone. It grew to a beautiful nine inches long and was thick. I looked down at and he asked if I liked it and I, of course, said "yes". He teased and said that if I played my cards right that he would also fuck me if I wanted. Like I'm going to tell him no.
We kissed a little more then I made my way down his freshly showered neck, to his stomach, his happy trail, then I took him in my mouth. He was softly moaning and exhaling as I did so. I laid my head down on his muscular, inner thigh and teased the head of his cock with my tongue. My lips went around and sucked on it and then down the shaft I went. I could hear him breathing hard and with excitement. I would go all the way down his shaft to his big, low-hanging balls, then make my way back up to the head. I wanted to take my time and enjoy this beautiful stranger. I also wanted to swallow a nice big load.
He motioned for me to move my body up close to his. All I had on was a bathrobe. He noticed that I was naked underneath and said that he thought that was hot. He reached under to grab my ass cheek in his hand and told me that he was going to fuck that for me. I loved his forthright and confidence. He was never with another guy before but he knew how to handle a hungry fuck hole.
As I stroked his cock and gave him head, he was getting more and more excited and moving his hips to meet my face as I went down on him. He stuck his fingertip in his mouth and was rubbing my asshole with it saying how he can't wait to sink himself in a nice warm pussy. It was cool of him to call it that. He let out a moan, shoved my head down on his throbbing cock, and fed me the biggest load of cum. OMG was it tasty too. I kept sucking his dick gently after he erupted. He was ready for another beer and then motioned for us to go up to his room. We climbed the stairs to his room and he shut the door behind us. Our room is on the first floor and he was on the second floor on the other side of the house. This is the room that the other top and I use when the couple comes to visit.
He dropped my robe around my ankles. I was a little shy because I am a little bigger around the waist. He told me that he loves thick chicks and that I was perfect. He teased and said that he likes a little more titty but....He instantly subdued my insecurities when he picked me up, kissed me, then laid me on the bed, spreading my knees and laying on top of me. He continued to make out with me until he was fully erect again and told me that I was in a lot of trouble because I already made him cum and that it takes him a lot longer to cum the second time around. Yeah, like I would have a problem with that, I told him and he giggled and slid himself deep inside my cock hungry hole.
He stayed that whole week and he fucked me every night.
He would visit often until he met a nice young lady and then the visits dwindled down. I'll always remember that first day we met.

I’m Sorry I’m Nervous
Summary: First date jitters happen to everyone, even Red Riot.
Wordcount: 2800
A/N: This is a direct continuation of Hero By Another Name
“Okay, so I’ll…um, see you Friday,” Kirishima nervously chuckled in front of you, holding your hands as he stood in your doorway.
You smile up at him. “Promise?”
He bent down and pressed his lips to yours. “I promise.” One more kiss turned into two, which turned into him with his arms tightly around your waist, your body pressed against the doorframe as he practically devoured you. Finally, the two of you said your goodbyes, a little out of breath and flushed down to your necks.
“We’re dating. We got a date on Friday,” Kirishima mumbled to himself as he got in the elevator, a dopey smile on his face. He threw a fist in the air, proud that he’d finally come out and said it. He needs to call Bakugo for saving his ass yet again. Who knew Bakugo was such a great wingman? Finally, Kirishima had made you his girl…his girlfriend. He hasn't felt like this in such a long time. Since, like, high school. His eyes went wide. He hasn't dated since high school! “Oh shit, we’re dating. I got a date this Friday.”
In a panic, he called the only Bakusquad member that knew the meaning of the word chill. “Hey dude, what’s up?” Sero answered lazily.
“Code Shitting Myself! I have a date on Friday!” Kirishima practically screamed into the phone as he rushed out of the elevator into the lobby, making a small woman who was entering at the same time jump back.
Kirishima waved apologetically as he scurried away to possibly go bury himself somewhere.
“Uh, congrats? Why are you panicking?”
“I don't know what I'm doing! What do people do for dates now?” He gripped at his hair, for all he knew, Netflix and Chill was the new norm!
“Bro,” Sero snorted at Kirishima’s distress; the red-head was overthinking the entire situation and Sero found it refreshingly funny.
“I haven't been on a date since high school, I don't know what a mature adult does for a first date. I’m not mature! I still watch cartoons in the morning on my days off!” That threw Sero over the edge; he bursted out into a fit of laughter, wheezing and coughing as he tried to compose himself.
After a solid five minutes, he was able to speak again. “Okay, relax dude. I’ll call the squad and we’ll brainstorm over some beer while Bakugo lectures us on the amount of sugar and calories we are putting in our bodies. Sounds good?”
“Yeah, yeah, that works.”
“You okay now?”
“Yeah….I have a girlfriend,” Kirishima let out a bashful giggle, looking back up to your apartment complex.
“Good for you, bro. I’ll see you later.”
~
“I fucking told you extras. Pay up, assholes.”
The whole table groaned as everyone started slamming their money down on the table, Bakugo cackling unapologetically as he swept the pot of money over to him. “The hell? Guys?” Kirishima looked at them all, appalled.
“We started making bets after you randomly became a junior firefighter,” Ashido frowned as she handed her money over to Bakugo, who snatched it from her and started counting it.
Kirishima pouted; he didn't think it was that obvious. Ashido reached over, reading his mind and patting his arm. “Honey, we all know how considerate you are of other people but seriously? Yeah, we all saw it coming.”
Kaminari cut in, holding up a folded up piece of paper. “Alright, so I pulled up a list on the internet—”
The whole table groaned, but Kaminari cleared his throat and spoke over their complaints. “I compiled a list of manly first dates and this is what I got.”
Sero swiped the paper from the electric blonde and glanced over it. “Museum? Does she like art?”
“Not all museums are just art. There is this really cool toy museum...” Kaminari took the paper back, smoothing out imaginary wrinkles.
Ashido rolled her eyes. “Is she even into video games?”
The red-head only shrugged as he took a sip of beer. Honestly, he couldn’t really think of anything that you were interested in outside of work. “I don't know? She’s kind of a workaholic. Only thing she collects is…”
“She's a creepy mega-fan of his and covers her entire apartment in Red Riot merch,” Bakugo chimed in nonchalantly, still counting his money. All eyes were now on Kirishima, eyebrows raised.
“Moving on!” Kirishima launched his body across the table to grab the list, trying to change the subject. “A picnic, that sounds nice.”
Sero shook his head. “Uh, you might have to go where there are no people. Both of you are still pretty popular and with that gossip rag around, you might attract a crowd.” The note was passed to Ashido; it was probably best in her hands since she’s the only girl in this group.
Ashido took out a pen and started crossing things off. “So anything with crowds is probably out. That means no to sports games and amusement parks…” Kaminari started to pout as he watched so many of his ideas get crossed out.
“Cross off crappy pottery painting. That shit is for some old married couple, or ones with little kids.” Bakugo finally joined the conversation only to scoff at Kaminari. Seriously, pottery? Ashido nodded in agreement at what the ash blonde said, tapping her nose as she scribbled that out.
Kaminari threw his arms in the air. “Let’s just cross off all my ideas!”
“Rock-climbing would be cool. She had fun doing that while we were camping. Maybe we could go on a hike.” Kirishima tried to be the positive one of the group. That camping trip had really helped change your relationship; something outdoorsy might be good.
Sadly, Ashido waved him off and started giving her “girl advice”, which really sounded more like a lecture. “No. You need to do something together that you haven't done. The first date can set the tone for the entire relationship. Plus, rock-climbing is more of a third date activity. First dates are when you need to have lots of face-to-face conversations. You are getting to know each other in a romantic sense; rock climbing isn't going to give you a lot of opportunities to do that. Also, no sex or too much kissing. Focus on talking to her as a person so she doesnt think you’re only after her body.” Kirishima’s face instantly flared up at being called out like that. Damn, Ashido can pick up on the slightest hint of anything that is remotely romantic. If only she had put that much effort into her studies when they were in school.
“Fine! All I got is one thing left. Tell me how that can go wrong so I can throw this stupid list away.” Kaminari was completely fed up, taking the list back and writing one more thing on it before thrusting it back into the center of the table. He crossed his arms as he slouched in his chair.
Ashido looked up at Bakugo and Sero, who both nodded with a look of surprise. “Actually….”
“That’s not a bad idea. Good job, Dunce Face.” Bakugo waved over a waitress to order some wings for Kaminari as a reward for using so much brain power.
“Wait, what? You guys like one of my ideas? Yes! And you guys doubted me. Just call me the love doctor from now on.” Kaminari leaned back in his chair, rubbing a finger under his nose as he bragged smuggly. Ashido reached over and pressed a finger to his forehead, causing him to fall back. “Fuck!”
~
“Miniature golf?” you questioned as the two of you walked up to the indoor miniature golf course. It was perfect. It was less in the open, they controlled the amount of people on the course, and with a little extra cash, the attendant held back on letting in more people so the two of you could have plenty of time alone together.
Kirishima cleared his throat nervously. “You don’t like it?”
You linked your fingers through his, shaking your head. “No, that’s not it. I just haven't done it in years.” His heart nearly launched into his throat. How do you do that so easily?
“Oh, I guess that means I'm a shoe-in to win, then?” Keeping his cool, he teased you as he pulled you into the building.
That competitive nature of yours came in full-throttle, jumping at the bait. “Is that a challenge I hear?”
Kirishima looked down at you, leaning in with a smirk on his face. “Yup. The winner decides where we go for dinner.”
You leaned in closer, whispering, “You’re on.” Oh, he wants to kiss you so bad right now.
After paying admission and slipping the teen a few more bills to keep the crowd away from the two of you, you were picking out what color club you wanted to use. Of course, Kirishima chose red. He was leaning back, watching you as you narrowed in on a neon green club. You bent down to see if it was a comfortable height for you and that's when he noticed the curve of your ass in those jeans. He felt himself totally zone out, leaning more heavily on his club when he stumbled.
You looked back at him as he straightened up. “You okay?”
“Yu-Yup! Go ahead to the first hole to save our spot. I changed my mind about what color to use.” He hid his now bent club behind his back, praying you wouldn’t notice or argue with him.
Lucky him, you nodded in agreement. “Oh, okay.”
Kirishima sighed in relief once you were out of view. He held up the bent club; the poor thing didn't have a chance under his weight. He held it up to the attendant, who saw the whole thing transpire. “I’m so sorry, I’ll pay for the damage.” He can already hear Mina telling him off. I told you not to think about sex or kissing too much! Focus on getting to know her! Easier said than done...
Now with a new club that was a darker shade of red in his hand, he met you at hole one. You were tossing one of your golf balls in the air as you waited. “Ready?” Your smile helped him forget the incident; he silently promised himself that he wouldn't embarrass himself anymore on this date so that you wouldn't regret going out with him.
Around the third hole, you were starting to giggle as he was about to take his shot. “What?”
“Just watching you play. Compared to you, everything on the course looks child-sized.” True, he is pretty bulky and it was even more apparent next to a mini-Eiffel Tower. He pulled back the club to take a swing. “You’re so big.”
His face instantly turned red and he lost his grip; his second golf club was sent spinning four courses away. You held both hands over your mouth, trying to contain your laughter. He glared at your shaking back. This was your fault this time. He sighed, his head down dejectedly as he started walking. “I’ll be right back.”
Club retrieved, you continued to play. He was extra cautious with the club, making sure to keep a firm grip on it and his sanity. Why is he so nervous? This shouldn't be that big of a deal; the two of you had hung out before. You skipped beside him, spinning your club in your hand. “I’m winning by four strokes.”
Kirishima looked over the course; it was set up so if he hit a corner just right, he could get it in one stroke. After you tried but didn’t manage to get very close to the hole, he felt like he had this in the bag. Time to show off. “I’ll get a hole in one on this, just you watch. This is basic geometry. Bakugo tutored me for hours til I was a master of it.”
You giggled, stepping to the side as he set his ball up. He hit the ball…but he may have hit a little too hard. Instead of just bouncing off the wall and going back towards the hole, it went into the air and straight for the small Great Wall of China. He rushed over to see the damage he’d caused now. “It’s stuck in the wall….I must have hit it too hard.” The ball was lodged inside the plaster and everytime Kirishima tried to get it out, more cracks formed. “I can’t get it out without wrecking it any more….”
“Pfft.” He looked back to glare at you. “This counts as a stroke.” Your competitive streak was showing and it was not playing nice.
Before he could protest, you went to your ball and tapped it gently. You smirked at him triumphantly as it came within an inch of the hole. “Well look at that, I’m going to get a birdie.”
“So much for looking cool….” Kirishima sighed to himself for like the millionth time. You were kicking his butt at this while he was stumbling all over the place. What the hell? He’d played this before and he was never this bad.
“Last one, the windmill.” The final boss of miniature golf stood on top of a small hill, paper mache blades spinning slowly. Kirishima was taller than it but it felt like it was towering over him. He swallowed.
“I’ll get this one no problem.” Kirishima pumped himself up, stepping up first. He watched the blades swinging around, waiting with the club in the air for the perfect moment. Quickly, he swung at the ball and it zipped through the air. It looked like it was going to make it. Finally!
RIIPP SHWOOP
“It went through the blade!” You dropped your club and ball to laugh as Kirishima rushed over in horror.
He scrambled over to look at the damage and find the ball but he noticed that it wasn't there. He looked behind the mill to see his ball coming out the back, rolling down the ramp all the way into the hole. He fist pumped the air, forgetting all about the other hole he’d caused. “Ha! See? Hole-in-one!” He pointed towards the hole and then leaned against the windmill, only for it to start tilting. “Oh, shit!” He caught it quickly and balanced it back out. Well, at least you were smiling as you crumpled to the ground laughing.
~
“That was fun, especially since I won by 10 strokes.” You stretch your arms up, taking in the fresh air after such a fun game. You turn to the side, expecting Kirishima to be standing beside you, only to see the street. He was behind you, dragging his feet out of the miniature golf facility, head held low. “Kirishima?”
“I’m sorry about all that back there. I was just so nervous that I kept messing things up and….causing destruction of property. Kind of messed up our first date, huh?” He walked up to you, eyes still downcast as he apologized for one of the best dates you’d ever had.
You reached out to him, gently taking hold of his hand. “Why were you so nervous? It’s not like we haven’t hung out like this before. If anyone should be nervous, it’s me. You already know all my dirty secrets in my apartment.” Maybe you should mention that you’d had Bakugo give you another “pep’” talk about how you were being an idiot for panicking slightly before the date.
Kirishima sighed, taking both your hands in his and rubbing his thumbs across your fingers. “It’s our first date, pretty much the deciding factor of whether you want to stay with me. I didn't want you to think I was a waste of your time…” You tried not to laugh. How could he think spending any time with him could be a waste?
“It’s not over yet, right?” You let go of one of his hands, pulling him by the other. “The winner gets to pick dinner. I vote ordering take out and watching a movie at my place.”
He looked at you with a dazed look, completely confused as he let you pull him down the street towards home. You smile at him reassuringly. “For what it’s worth, I had fun. I always have fun with you.”
Kirishima’s face instantly lit up, his mood seeming to perk up. “Really? You dont regret it?”
You move your hand in his, making your fingers weave together. “I don't think I could ever regret being with you.” Honestly, you’ve never felt this happy before, and it’s all thanks to the red-head walking beside you.
He tightened his grip and smiled down at you sweetly, making you feel all gooey inside. “Same.”

The West Coast Trail; A Vancouver Island Adventure Of A Lifetime
Packing: Food/Clothes/Essentials | Booking: Reservations/Transport | Research | Facts | My Story | Start | Days 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 | Chez Moniques | Nitinaht Crab Shack
The West Coast Trail is one of the most, if not the most, iconic Canadian west coast adventure a hiker could ask for. It is a 75km test of both physical and mental endurance in one of the most stunning environmental settings you have ever seen. Not everyone that sets out for this great journey completes it, but those that do have a tale to tell for a lifetime and a forever bond with those they meet along the way.
Having completed this epic trail twice now, my approach is to blend a little bit of old and new into a (hopefully) wondrous tail that offers context, wisdom and insight to the journey, while describing the magical things you will experience and the challenges you will face. I’ve also prepared additional posts for your reading pleasure on Packing: Food/Clothes/Essentials and Booking: Reservations/Transport. So please, grab a hot cup of tea, throw on those comfy pjs and sit back and enjoy the read.
Handy References and Information Material
Every great hike starts with research, especially this one! If you haven't heard of it yet, look up the famed book Blisters and Bliss: A Trekker's Guide to the West Coast Trail by David Foster and Wayne Aitken. This awesomely 80′s comic styled guide adds a little light-hearted humour to a highly detailed account of the WCT which is revised roughly every couple years. It offers both trekking options (north to south AND south to north!) and gives you all the step by step nitty gritty deets in between including history, objects of interest, geological features and safety tips! I suggest taking it with you and read about the section ahead each night. Also, opt to keep it in a safe pack pocket, don’t put it in a plastic bag (I did this my first time and sadly lost my copy to the inescapable moisture and mold).
Check out the West Coast Trail Facebook Page! This page is not manned by Parks Canada. However, it is a great place to meet other hikers, find someone looking to ride share, ask questions and for advice, learn about recent developments and important information (washed out bridges, danger sections, wildlife sightings or concerns... even hear about annoyed hikers picking up others garbage...not kidding lol).
Oh! And there is also a Women’s West Coast Trail Page!
Parks Canada Website. Duh, right?! But you may not realize that Parks Canada has some handy info regarding what to pack (and what not to!), emergency items, wildlife warnings, necessary fees, maps, tide tables, tips and more to make your hike a happy one. Check out the Planning For WCT page here.
You'll also find online a plethora of websites, blogs and articles dedicated to WCT info, tips, advice, and more. I encourage you to read a few personal accounts to get a real life feel of what others experience. Here are some of my favourites (don’t let the names scare you!), plus a very cool and scholarly article from UofBC on the effects of colonial-style tourism in the area and on the local indigenous tribes written in 2020. Fascinating read.

The Facts
The West Coast Trail is 75 km long. That's on the map and, best as I can figure, relatively "as the crow flies". It does not account for the extra steps, the ladders, the climbing, the crawling, the descending, etc, you get the picture. Both times I've gone my fitbit has read almost double or more the distance in 'real ground covered'. For example, when they say its 5km from the Gordon River Trail Head to Thrasher Cove, my fitbit in both cases recorded over 12 km when all was said and done. When they tell you it takes on average 5-6 hours to do that stretch, and you're only covering 1km or less an hour, this is why. You will chuckle in the orientation, as many have, and think, "ya, if you're a SNAIL!", but you will soon realize it’s about the terrain and that you're essentially doing double or more the physical effort to cross it. The same is true for nearly all the trail, even the "easy parts".
Safety First - the majority of accidents and injuries occur in the first 13 kms on the south side of the trail, from Gordon River at km 75, to Camper Bay at km 62. The trail accommodates just over 7500 people a year. Of that, Parks Canada evacuates roughly 80-100 injured persons annually and Nitinaht villagers have claimed to ferry out 100-200 additional hikers off the trail as well, due to injury, misery, etc. It won’t be a bear or cougar that takes you out, it’ll be the wilderness itself. A fall from a wet log or slimy stone is the most common culprit, and it may not even be the fall itself, but what you land on. Sharp rocks, jabbing sticks, etc all cause serious injury. And it always happens when you're TIRED. Don't push yourself. Take a break, have a snack, don't go farther in a day than your body can handle. Better to be a day late than waiting 24 hrs in the bush with no morphine and a broken leg for a boat ride that surely will be agonizing. Just sayin' here...
The WCT historically was maintained for shipwrecked mariners. Many have lost their lives along this trail. I don’t understand how it doesn’t have its own ghost story yet! It has an amazing history with lots of ship wreckage to see along the way if you time the tides right.
Lastly, the temperate rainforest that engulfs the WCT is not only stunning but globally very rare, encompassing less than 1% of ecosystems across the earth. Here you will see plants, trees and animals that may not exist anywhere else on our planet. The Sitka Spruce for example is among not only the tallest trees in the world, but also the oldest, some 700-1000 years old. This means they have seen North America as it was before European Settlers touched it. They are revered by many and highly sought after by loggers, which often leads to conflicts. Many extremely unique animals also reside in the WCT, like the islands' black bears which are actually larger than mainland black bears with massive skulls and only one unique colour phase. The island is also home to cougars, Victoria's famous mini-deer and sea-wolves, the only wolves in the world that have adapted to life on a coastline, they call the Pacific Coast home. With a completely unique diet of seafood they are genetically different from mainland wolves and have also been known to swim in the ocean for many kilometers.
My West Coast Trail Story
Now, before we begin, I'll preface this by saying, don't mistake me for a pro; I am simply someone who has made it off the WCT twice [relatively] safely and lived to share my tale. If you are looking for expert advice I'd say check out the Parks Canada website or the Blisters and Bliss book. But if you are looking for a heartwarming and informative, real life account of the experience, you've come to a great place.
I am now amongst a lucky few that have had the enormous privilege to have hiked the West Coast Trail not only once, but twice in my lifetime thus far. I say thus far because this trail has such a special place in my heart I expect at some point I will likely attempt it again. It changed my life and has had an everlasting impact on the lives of those around me. I learned a lot about myself and even more about those closest to me. What I am capable of, the importance of preparation and planning, the bonds you create with people you meet along the way and the love of those that support you going and take care of things while you're gone. I simply couldn’t have done this without the support of my amazing husband, friends, parents and sister and my wonderful sister in law whom we stayed with this time. But most importantly I missed the encouragement and support of my mother-in-law who lived on the island and sadly has passed since my first trip. She and her friends played such an instrumental role in my first journey with my sister, buying us foods, housing us, driving us, and just overall being so excited to see us off, I truly missed her this time but I know she was there with me in spirit.
In this way the West Coast Trail is a life-shaping experience like no other. You will learn much about yourself, be in awe and hopefully inspired by the incredible natural world around you and you will meet fellow Canadians and global trotters and, in turn, become a part of their WCT story. Let me be amongst the first to congratulate you on this epic endeavor and wish you the happiest, and safest, of journeys and hopefully I can send you off a bit more well prepared for the adventure.
First Timers VS Second Timers
My experience as a first time WCT hiker was extremely different from my second expedition in every way possible.
The first time I hiked the WCT I went with my youngest sister Jenna. We had both hiked and camped before but this was a new experience and everything was raw, a bit scary, amazing and beautiful all at once. I think it just hit us both like a ton of bricks when we landed at the base of that first ladder across the Gordon River. Although Sharon had talked to me for months, mentally preparing me for the hike, when Jenna and I both looked up at the rest of our start group scaling that first beast, looming up from the small beach landing, I know we both had the exact same thought, like, "oh shit, this is for real...".
Tumblr media
Why the WCT? Sharon, my good friend and co-worker, had previously attempted it before turning me onto it. Due to an unfortunate incident with her hiking companion, they had to turn in the towel. She has since rocked it twice more and was an absolute wealth of information, support and the wisdom that only an experienced female hiker, mom and athlete can be. Much of what I am sharing with you today began with her. She continues to inspire me every day with her ferocity and determination and boundless want for adventure.
At the time of my first hike in 2016, my mother-in-law lived on Vancouver Island and she and her best friend Jill had kindly arranged for us to stay at another friend's cottage just outside Port Alberni. The friend and her husband fed us well and the beauty of the setting was unimaginable. But the anticipation of what lay ahead weighed heavily on both Jenna and I and neither of us barely slept a wink. The next morning we had our last hot shower and flush toilet experience for the next 7 days and the 4 of us set out for the Gordon River Trail Head.
We piled into Jill’s car the following morning. The ride was long, on gravel switch back logging roads, but the supportive company made the nervous anticipation bearable. I feel like I did not appreciate the ride as much as I should have at the time, but a few 5 am bus rides (and much experience) later, I certainly cherish the thought my mother-in-law and Jill had put into making the beginning special for us both.
Since then, I've booked my island hike transports with the West Coast Trail Express bus. The folks there are super helpful and the experience has always been a good one. In 2018, a WCT facebook group was created which has made connecting with others looking for ride shares and doing the trail much easier AND more informative! You can read about this page and other research options at the top of this post if you missed them ;)
When 2016 saw Jenna and I land at Gordon River's Information Station, I was greeted with an amazing surprise... Sharon and Jackie (another friend) had pre-purchased for me a WCT t-shirt. I cried, there were no words. When 2021 saw Krista and I land at Gordon River's Information Station, I was greeted with a sense of the familiarity of the adventure and vicariously enjoyed the wonder of someone else now experiencing the trail for the first time... READY?!.. and INHALE... can you smell it..? the Adventure?! It's like greeting an old friend again, for the first time.
It's Like Those Choose Your Own Adventure Books, Where You Pick Your Ending...
Remember those..? Maybe..? When Starting the WCT, you can plan to start at either entry point, Gordon River to the south or Pacheena Bay to the north, or now even halfway at Nitinaht. There are advantages to all, so it just depends what is most appealing to you. Most people do the trail within a 6-8 day time frame. This gives a good balance of time vs pack weight. I always try to plan for an extra emergency day, just in case. Things happen here... Long stays requires more provisions and a heavier pack. Shorter stays (in my personal opinion) are extremely challenging, unless you have done the trail before, are very skilled in lightweight packing and are an expert hiker. I still wouldn't recommend it. Plus, if you're going that fast, you're rushing by so much, what's the point? If you've paid and taken the time to be here, enjoy it! That being said, when Jenna and I did the trail we were treated to watching marathoner and athlete Jen Segger run it in one day. ONE DAY. She currently holds the women's record for WCT completion at 13 hrs 44mins (as posted here on her page under 2016). Of course she had no pack and support runners with her and a camera crew. But as she ran by us I think both our jaws dropped. It was like watching Super Woman run by you and you were just lucky if her sweat spayed you as she passed by.
When you start out, keep in mind your pack is at it's heaviest. Starting at Pacheena Bay entry point means you'll be hiking the easiest parts of the trail first. You'll make excellent time here and cover the most distance over the shortest number of days. Although all areas of the trail offer exquisite and unique beauty, in my opinion the north end is the most magical. Maybe because by the time I reach it Im half delirious and most certainly exhausted so the easier hike is a much welcome break. Both times I've hiked the WCT I have opted to start at the southern trail head point known as Gordon River.
Starting at Gordon River means that you get through the most difficult terrain right at the beginning, when you're freshest, well rested and eager to set out. You also have the added benefit of anticipating the terrain getting easier (rather than harder). To me, this is the most logical approach and why I prefer this route and honestly, there is just something that seems slightly disillusioning about expecting something to get harder along the way. When Jenna and I first made it up that initial ladder we came across several groups finishing their hike. One in particular stuck out, a group of three female friends. We passed the first two who were happy and chatting and weirdly gave us a (mild) warning to disregard their companion, who was somewhere behind them. Ok... sure, we thought. Then along came the third girl... muttering, swearing under her breath, we contemplated what she might do to her companions if she caught up to them and we joked about how that likely was the end of that friendship. 2016 was a much busier year, pre-covid and all, and we met so many more people, Canadians, Germans, Chinese and Auzzies!
2021 though is the year of the Canadians! If you happen to head out on the WCT this year, although you will still experience a wide range of people (Canada is an extraordinarily diverse nation!), rest assured most currently reside within Canada. Hello Homies! It was, however, a much more muted WCT experience than my past one. Although the Parks staff assured me they have had lots of people come through (I asked!), and the online bookings are sold out, it seemed so much quieter day to day. At the time Krista and I arrived, Parks staff were still only doing outdoor basic debriefing, prior to which we were expected to watch an online information video covering the basics. This was in stark contrast to the very in depth orientation Jenna and I had to attend back in 2016.
Fellow Canadians, Tsk Tsk...
The biggest difference I noticed that could be as a result of the minimized debrief is the amount of garbage. There is NO garbage removal on the trail. Parks staff DO NOT haul garbage out (its a remote wilderness, do you really expect garbage men??). The WCT is accessible by foot (as in, you hike in... for 75 km) OR by boat, the latter being weather and safety dependant in extreme occasions (ie emergency evacuation). At each campsite we stayed, hikers THIS year (the trail was closed 2020) have left copious amounts of garbage. It’s in the bear bins, on the trail, the beach, in the outhouses... it’s EVERYWHERE. The worst by far was Camper Bay with stinking tuna cans and bags in every bear bin and Cribbs Creek, where the garbage pile extended to a massive bottle collection BEHIND the bear bin.
Why do sites have bear bins in the first place? Because human food and waste smells amazing to BEARS! So we lock it away to keep it, and us, safe. This does not mean a bear can’t smell it, it just means they can’t access it. Now, what happens when food rots and gets stinkier...? Of course it's more enticing. This draws bears, and other animals, to the campsite, which puts your safety, and the safety of each camper, at risk. I have to give Krista major kuudos here because that girl dug in deep, cleaned someone else's mess at each site we stopped at and even hauled out other people's stinky gross trash. Please give her a round of applause for thinking about you because she deserves it. And as Canadians, seriously, we can do better right??

Da' Debrief
Apologies, now that’s out, let's get on. During our debrief we learned some important key points.
2021 has seen unprecedented amounts of animal sightings and encounters. Primarily bear and cougar. There has also been more daytime sightings of wolves, which is considered extremely rare. With the trail closed in 2020, lack of human presence has caused a larger wildlife presence. Be aware, practice safety, travel in groups. Groups are also being asked to accommodate single hikers to reduce risk.
There is a lot of maintenance to be done that wasn't able to be accomplished in 2020 due to the pandemic. Be prepared for washed out boardwalks, bridges and rotten boards. There is also fewer Parks staff to help with this upkeep. Luckily, local members of indigenous tribes, called the Trail Guardians, historically help in a huge way with this and you may even run into them on the trail! We saw their team arrive in their new boat leaving Walbran and at Pacheena we spoke to a Parks staff who's uncle is on the team. It's a small world here.
Following the debrief, the Parks staff escort you to the Gordon River ferry. The fellow here takes you across and plops you down on the small sandy beach, gathers up any hikers waiting for a ride back and heads off on his way. And there you are, left to stare at a huge ladder, really, the first of many.
up, Up, UP You Go!
In 2016 Jenna and I patiently waited at the end of the line to be the last two up the ladder and I tackled the climb with my 50lb pack in tow (phew!). In 2021 Krista and I were the only two standing on the beach, me revelling in my 'barely there' 38lb pack. The trail was our oyster!
The trek from Gordon River to Thrasher Cove is the most challenging and physically demanding on the trail. We left on the 11:30 ferry and finally walked into Thrashers Cove at 5pm - Yes, it DOES take that long. You actually don't see many ladders, a few here and there, but best believe you are still climbing! You scramble up rock faces, you squeeze past trees, you choose your footing extremely carefully and all the while up, up, UP you GO! Even over rocks and hard ground the trail is fairly well worn and easy to follow... most of the time. A short while in you come to the first bridge over the first creek. I have stopped here both times to fill up water bottles, but beware, the scramble back up is more difficult than it looks this year due to the fallen trees. Mountain Goat level scuttling expertise is advised! Much further along, not far from Thrashers, you'll eventually comes across the famed Donkey Engine! This year you will find it to be directly in your path, where as in 2016 I’m quite sure we looked down on it somehow from a higher elevation. Either way, it’s epic and makes for an amazing photo op! To think that thing was hauled by beast and hand up that hill still blows my mind.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Along the way we met a very nice gentleman named Wilson who had intended to hike the WCT with his son. Unfortunately, due to a graduation re-scheduling mishap his son was unable to come, but Wilson decided to soldier on. He was incredibly happy, thoughtful and polite and asked if we minded if he tagged along as we hiked. He regaled us with tails of his trails, immigration to Canada, his wife and family and much more; he was a fascinating fellow! With the wildlife warnings this year, Parks staff request that no one hike alone, if you can, allow a solo hiker to tag along so everyone can stay safe. We graciously obliged and enjoyed his company and great conversation for a couple more days until we parted ways at Nitinaht comfort camping.
Thrasher's Cove is an amazing, but small, campsite. I recall vividly in 2016 the trail down to the beach being extremely treacherous, with steep and slippery embankments and so many ladders! By comparison our 2021 descent seemed like a cake-walk. Here I was, boasting to Krista the challenge that lay before her, but when we got there it was literally a quick hop and skip down. She found anything I said after that to be hard to believe and was convinced I was totally embellishing. It really made me realize how MUCH the trail changes and what dynamic metamorphosis must have occurred in 6 years! I also realized how hard Trail Guardians and Parks staff must work to maintain all this constantly worn out infrastructure. It must a BEAST. Be warned, if you arrive to Thrashers too late in the day it will be tough finding a spot. If this happens to you, check out the south side of the beach, sometimes there's a bit more space there. Ironically, I have set up my tent in the exact same spot both times, right in front of the tiny triangle cave around the rock wall on the south side of the beach. I have claimed this spot now.
Tumblr media
Knock, Knock, It's The Ocean!
This is also where knowing how to read your tide tables is extremely important. While camping on the beach you must pitch your tent above the high tide line. The high tide line is where you can see the sand was last wet on the beach. It's not where the water is when you arrive. Look for the wet point on the sand and keep your tent a few good feet above that. When Jenna and I first arrived at Thrashers, I was confident in my tide table reading skills; being from Alberta, I took the time to learn how to read them in advance. But, during the orientation the Park staff had warned our group that our first night was due to be the highest high tide of the year - intimidating to a couple prairie girls! And, which is also a thing if you read up on the moon cycle! (Actually there is a lot of news this year on the effects of the moon's impending orbital wobble on tides, its a fascinating read if you're interested!). So, naturally a bit cautious and overly leery of the horror stories of campers waking up to soaked tents in the middle of the night, my poor sister was worried sick. Exhausted but too afraid to sleep, I promised her I'd stay up till high tide to make sure we were safe. She soon passed out and I settled in reading my book. But the surf was loud and near, a thundering, crashing rukus with each wave and about 2 hours in my sister jolted straight up in her sleeping bag, scaring the ba-geezus outta me crying out 'IS IT HERE?! IS THE OCEAN HERE YET?! ", big-eyed I just stared, then broke out laughing; I settled her back down, reassured her we were safe, now passed the time of concern, and wiggled down into my own sack to drift off. It's still an inside joke to this day and once in a while we chuckle to each other about the time the ocean came knocking.
2021 brought me its own surprise when at 4am I awoke to an unusual scratching noise against our tent next to my head. We had wrapped our rain covers around our [empty] backpacks and snugged them up against the tent to stay dry and save space. Apparently the local otter family found them fascinating and decided to check them out on their morning stroll. An alarm clock certainly fit for the WCT.
It's A Beach Walk, Not A Cake Walk
Leaving Thrasher's Cove you have two options! You can take the beach route if you time the tides carefully OR you can take the inland route. In 2016 Jenna and I sojourned the inland route. Although the inland hike was pretty, if I'd found the trek down to Thrashers tough, the trek back up would've been classed insane. Sharon’s favourite saying is, what goes down must go up. In 2021 Krista and I timed the tide, leaving at 7:30am, to take the beach route. Although we'd planned to avoid what turned out to not be a bad climb, I'd really wanted to see the famous sea caves! The sea caves themselves were nothing short of AMAZING. There is just no other word. I was so in awe that in my mind they seem to take up almost 3 days of our trip, not just half an hour on the second day.
Tumblr media
Although we'd planned to aim for Cullite Creek Campground day 2, we hit a major snag. As we traipsed along, well after the sea caves, we came to a rocky sea shelf that rose high out of the water. As you look up, you might catch a glimpse of some buoys, which commonly mark the beach access to the trail and campgrounds. Thinking this was our access back onto the trail, as you must go inland from here to Campers, we headed up along the higher shelf. We passed an unusual 'Danger' sign. We looked around, but could not identify anything that seemed out of the ordinary for where we were. We kept on. We came to a similar sign on the rock, but again, failed to see what was obviously dangerous. Wasps? Bear den? Surge Channel? There was no fallen bridge, no down ladder. Everything seemed ok. We reached the buoys, and Krista lifted her leg to step over a small trickle of a water... That's when it happened.
Danger on the Trail...
Before she could even complete her step, both feet flew out from beneath her and her whole body, pack and all, smashed onto the rock shelf. She began rocketing like a she was on a pro waterslide down the embankment towards a 9 foot drop into the water pool below. I had the wherewithal to shout out 'grab a rock!', and in the 3 seconds that seemed like 3 hours, I had the presence of mind to ponder how I might explain this to her mother back at home and 4 year old son if things went sideways... but with a 38lb pack on myself and being a few feet behind, there was no way I could move fast enough to do anything but yell.
Luckily, mid-slide, she managed to grab a handhold just long enough to stop and get some footing. Crisis averted, but the damage was done. Wearing shorts, she was sporting some nasty road rash on her cheek and arm, but most of the damage was buffered by the hoodie she'd had tied around her waist. She was bruised, but she was lucky.
Feeling pretty roughed up, we opted to stay at Camper Bay instead and rolled in about 1pm where we washed and treated her ailing buttocks and gave her some much needed pain meds. Along came a few more groups and we felt a bit less sheepish learning 2 of them had also had the exact same experience. Pride slightly less wounded, we made some new friends for the chatter and laid back and chilled for the afternoon. On your parks provided trail map, you will see a small note in red pointing to BA 'B' (beach access B) that warns about a dangerous slope just past the surge channels after Owen Point. It's not kidding.
If you stay at Camper Bay, it's a lovely and large campsite with lots of room for everyone. However, it has a habit of getting very windy, like all the time, and the only time it's not is when the sun goes down. If you're early enough, grab one of the sheltered tent spots in the woods/taller grass along the creek side. It also has a rep for early morning rain and fog. Something about the geography here seems to create its own micro-environment. If you walk out along the beach at low tide and cross the creek to the north, you'll see some neat tidal pools and caves in the rock wall. In the one with the small pool of water you might see a single lonely fish with the pool all to himself. I hope one day the tide washes him in friend.
Tumblr media
Reminiscing...
Ironically, day 2 in 2016 was also the day I had a mishap of my own. Tired and worn down, toddling after Jenna across a log bridge the width of my car, I misstepped. My feet were somehow gone and in a second I found myself sitting on my ass, straddling the log instead of walking on it. I peered down into the 6 foot drop below. Completely in disbelief I suddenly realized Jenna was yelling at me "Are you OK?!" ... Yes! I was! I was ok. Nothing was broken, hurt or otherwise. But it was a wake up call. If you are tired, take a break, don't push on or try to keep up with someone faster. Only hike as fast as your slowest hiker and be patient. Take a breath and remember, the goal is no one dies out here... hopefully.
Gone Are The Days Of Legendary Mud And Tilting Ladders That Make You Poop ... Just A Little
The few days that followed are a bit of a blur. There's so much to see and so little blog space to include it all! We left Campers Bay on a foggy, rain mist morning at about 10am. Since we had to take the inland trail there was no worry about racing the tide on this stretch. We chatted with the couple we met the night before (Mat and Lauren from Calgary!). Everyone was a bit tired that morning.
Although we saw some mud, with a historic heat wave just prior to our trip in 2021, the legendary mud pits that the WCT has typically been known for were non-existent. In 2016 Jenna and I spent most of our inland trail time figuring out how to cross mud-holes, watching where each other stepped and trying not to fall in up to our armpits (I kid you not). This time, there was no mud and if you disagree with me, go again after it rains. I dare you.
This is also the section where we saw the most ladders, most notably through Cullite Creek, which was sadly such a trickle there was no need for the cable car, we just rock hopped across (with ease). We saw some really cool art done along the trail by the Guardians in the new bridge and log cuttings, some even signed their names! Have you tried making a curve with a chainsaw? I was impressed.
This section also has a neat and unique stretch of boardwalk that goes through a fragile wetland. Sections of the boardwalk were out, it looks easy, don't let it fool you!
A brand-spank'in new suspension bridge calls Logan Creek home! In 2016 Jenna and I had to climb a harrowing series of crazy, half-tilted ladders to get to the bridge. I recall my favourite as being the third ladder in a tower, that was so amazingly on a 10 degree angle sideways, and scaling it with my 50lb backpack. It was all I could do not to roll off and meet a perilous end at the bottom of the gully. Today the beautiful new bridge almost disappointed with the ease it took to cross it. NO more ladder climbing, you just walk up the stairs and off you go!
We arrived in Walbran Campsite at 5:30, the creek is perfect for swimming if it’s warm enough. Several groups had a run-in here with a couple breaking the fire ban policy. People on the WCT take this seriously, keep in mind if you start a forest fire here, there’s no where to go and it puts the homes of indigenous peoples at severe risk too. We all simmered, had a tasty meal, chatted with our travel companions, explored the beach a bit and turned in for the night, thoroughly exhausted.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We spent the next two days going from Walbran Campsite to Cribbs and then to Tsuisiat Falls. Due to a problematic and confrontational cougar in 2021 there is no camping permitted along the trail between kilometer 34 to 38. So, naturally, your last stop prior to Nitinaht Narrows is Cribbs Creek.
The Stretch from Walbran to Cribbs is basically all beach walk. The beach is lovely, but don’t let 'beach walk' fool you. It’s just as challenging to walk in sand as it is through forest... and you thought it was going to be easier, didn’t you?! It's like walking through snow without snowshoes and being 30lbs heavier...what a Canadian thought. But! Fear Not! along this stretch is also the famed Chez Moniques burger stop and the Carmanah Lighthouse! The lighthouses are closed to the public this year due to covid, but it’s still a sight to behold as it beams brightly through the fog.
The Legend That Is Chez Moniques
In 2016 Jenna and I made a critical, but common, food planning error. We packed meals based on what we felt was healthy and would give us energy, without accounting for taste. In other words, we packed a lot of dry lentil-based meals that tasted awful and took forever to cook and I couldn't have forced down my throat if you had paid me. I love beans, but dried lentils on the trail... yech! You can read more about our cautionary tale in my food section, and if you're uncertain about foods to pack, it’s worth the read!
So, sufficed to say, that year we had the absolute pleasure of experiencing Chez Moniques in it's prime. It was incredible. Here we were, in the middle of nowhere, exhausted, starving (I was anyway lol), and run off our feet. And out of nowhere arose this mirage of a tent with burgers, fancy meals, peach ciders and more! My god it was intense. We kicked off our boots, stuffed our faces, chatted with Monique, the legend herself, and I protectively cradled the best Okanagan Cider that had ever touched my lips while we waited for the tide to recede. It was magical.
Sadly, between 2017-2018 both Monique and her husband tragically passed away. It was a blow felt around the world by all those who had passed through their doors and experienced their generosity. There is a lovely documentary attributed to their memory here. Today, in 2021, following a devastating 2020 with no business, Monique & Peter's grand-daughter, Katrina Knighton is trying to carry on the dream though the restaurant will be renamed as Nytom. We heard lots of chatter and some hikers did actually see her in person, but unfortunately there are some struggles, including keeping up supply levels, which they are walking in for 1.5 hours (!). We missed them this year, as did many hikers, and I was so sad Krista would not experience it. But! They are rumoured to have services most often morning and around 5pm. Katrina is also very active on the WCT Facebook page, so feel free to drop her a line there for more info!
We arrived in Cribbs Creek at about 2:30pm. It was the end of our Day 4 and what a campsite it was. Lovely soft sand under your toes and beautiful beach. There is nothing here for swimming but we had the most amazing sunset view on the rock shelf that night. Although it didn't rain while we were on the trail, this was the first time we'd seen the sun since we left Victoria.

The Magical Beauty Of Nitinaht And The Crab Shack Of Your Dreams
We left Cribbs Creek about 9am and stuck to mostly inland trail. Other hikers going the opposite way had warned it was very overgrown but we honestly had no problems with it; it was a little underused, but keep in mind they hadn't seen the south side yet. We made excellent time and arrived in Nitinaht Narrows at 1:09pm. The journey is absolutely stunning. There is a new bridge over the creek at Dare Beach and the forest walk is lovely. The bridge over the Cheewhat River offers great views also. You cannot take water from the river itself but after the bridge there is a freshwater stream marked by a wooden sign if you need it and soon you will come across an old Cabin. When you arrive here, turn around and see the new and amazing Ditidaht home across the river. It has changed a bit, likely with the drought, but in 2016 Jenna and I referred to this stretch as "the place that Disney films are based on". Ivy clung all the way up the trees and just as you wrapped your head around that, the trail winds it's way through a silent coniferous forest where you could almost hear a pin drop, followed by a magical wetland lake with flowering lilly pads the size of your head. But none of this compares to Nitinaht Narrows.
As you walk along the trail, just a few short minutes past the lake, the path will turn from boardwalk to dirt and as you round the bend you will suddenly walk, with no warning, right into Nitinaht! It has caught me by surprise each time. We strolled down the walkways to the dock, left our packs safely on the bench and made our way to the Crab Shack. The blue-green waters of Nitinaht Narrows is something to behold. When you peer over the side of the wharf you see schools of small fish so thick you could almost surely touch them. When I dream of paradise, I dream of here.
Nitinaht Narrows was only recently made an 'official' entry and exit point by Parks Canada in 2014, you can read more about it here. But prior to this, older community members witnessed the inception and rise of the WCT as we know it today and watched it grow. Ferrying hikers across the narrows has become a task handed down from generation to generation. Connected to the ocean, it has tides about 10 minutes apart and historically, many years ago, hikers did drown trying to swim across before getting swept out to sea, naively misjudging the calm-looking waters. About 3 kms past the narrows, the Ditidaht band offers comfort camping options to those looking to settle and day hike the trail or in need of a break from the grind. This is marked with a sign and you will see it on the trail. The crab shack itself has also recently built new cabins as well which start from roughly $100/night (houses 4 bodies and you use your own sleeping bag) and goes up to ($200 and $300) where bedding is provided. They also offer tent platforms for a modest $30/night fee.
The Nitinaht Crab Shack is owned and operated by the Edgar family. They are kind, light-hearted, hospitable and will make you the best meal you have ever had. They work extremely hard and have a great sense of humour. A family member told me the previous day they had served a group of 20 lunch all at the same time! Hippie-Doug was their ring leader that day and he manned the ferry, that took us across the narrows to complete our journey, along with a sweet old chocolate lab you will see in many a hikers' photos. If you catch him at a slow moment he might share a joke and and story with you. But don't leave until you have warmed yourself thoroughly by the wood stove, had the best meal this side of Canada and picked up some treats for the road. The ferry finishes for the day at 4:30pm and then Hippie-Doug settles in for a much deserved break, a meal, and maybe a drink, so don't be late!

Tsu-Tsu-Tsusiat!
We left the warming comfort of the Nitinaht stove at about 3pm and headed on our way. We saw our new friend and traveling tag-along Wilson off at the Ditidaht Comfort Camping site and continued on, arriving at Tsusiat Falls by 6:30pm. You can't see the falls from the beach, but if you reach the hole in the wall at Tsusiat Point, you're just minutes away.
In 2016, the first 5 days of our hike Jenna and I had the most amazing weather. On our 5th day, after the crab shack, while the sun beamed a balmy 25+ C, we ditched our packs on a slope of sand with gentler waters between Nitinaht and Tsusiat Point and ran into the ocean up to our knees, jumping the waves and being astonished at their strength. We laid on the beach afterwards and soaked in the sun. When I think of my little sister, I often think of this carefree day and smile. Enjoy the journey as you go, or you’ll miss the best parts.
Tsusiat Falls is a popular campground. When we arrived the beach was packed. According to 2021 Parks regs, you can only stay one night here to minimize environmental impact. The beach was very different from what I remembered, but the falls were ever glorious. We threw on bathing suites and while Krista enjoyed the brief sun, I took a dip in the beckoning water.
The next morning, with Krista not feeling hot, I'd aimed to get up early and walk back to the Hole In The Wall with my Nikon DSLR camera. When we passed by the day before it was high tide and the Hole was under sea water. However, after a delay, Krista decided to come with me. We packed up, left our bags at Tsusiat and strolled back to the hole together, and a better decision it was. I’d watched a group ahead of us pass through an hour ago, but beneath their tracks you could make out a fresh set of cougar prints. Since low tide was at 10am that morning, that means the tracks were very recent and could only have been made since the water receded. Food for thought.
Darling Bears You Might Be Cute, But I Don't Want To Snuggle
The last 2 days on the WCT (or your first two, depending where you start) are the easiest to hike and where you make up the most ground. We'd intended to land at Darling River Campsite (approx km 14), which from Tsusiat (approx km 25) would make it about an 11 km day. Most of our fellow travellers whom we had become familiar with were aiming for Michigan Creek though, which would add 2 km to our 6th day, but save us that on our 7th and final day out. We decided to see what the day held and if we arrived at Darling early we might continue on. WELL.... what the day held was not entirely what we expected.
In 2016 Jenna and I walked the beach hike between Tsocowis Creek and Michigan Creek. It had started to rain the night before and by morning was a light, but steady, downpour. We donned our rain gear but by noon, and halfway through our distance, it was clear that Jenna's rain jacket was not waterproof. Though she had tested it prior to leaving, it turned out not to be up to WCT-level rain. As we continued on poor Jenna got wetter and wetter and by the time we reached Michigan, she was soaked through to the bone. Water pooled in her boots, and she shivered so hard she couldn't help me with the tent. Realizing this could get worse quickly, I popped the tent, got her changed and snugged into her sleeping bag ASAP. Then I worked on adding a tarp. When the shivering stopped we got a warm meal into her and passed our time taking turns winding up our emergency radio and trying to maintain the faint signal from a long forgotten US talk station till darkness fell. It poured the entire next day as well for a total of over 24 hours straight and our photos at the Pacheena lighthouse are in plastic emergency ponchos.
In 2021 Krista and I opted for the inland trail as we'd previously made better time this way. There is lots to see here, another Donkey Engine and a rusty old grader, and I absolutely love the Billy Goat Bridge. The trail threw us for a bit at Tsocowis Creek, there, phantom branch-offs seemed to lead off and abruptly stop. You have to go down the ladders to continue the inland trail portion (OR access the beach). However, just passed Orange Juice Creek, it was quite clear this section of trail was not well used recently... by people anyway. It was eerily dark, overgrown and passed by what looked like long lost abandoned campsites in caves along the rock wall. As we passed by we heard something stir in the dim light, knocking over an old cup, and we nervously quickened our pace. We began to see pile after pile of fresh bear scat, some so fresh that by the time we reached Darling we figured we must be just behind it. Making a lot of noise we made our way to the beach and relief washed over us as we recognized people half a km ahead... our fellow Albertans, Mat and Lauren! But when they stopped suddenly and started to back up we knew something wasn't right.
Just ahead of them on the beach was our bear. And big guy he was! They figured a lone male. They managed to scare him off and once we caught up the 4 of us made our way as a group to Michigan Creek just down the beach where we figured there was relative safety in numbers.

Bitter Sweet Goodbyes
Our last day from Michigan to the Information Station at Pacheena was a super short one. We were the last hikers to leave Michigan at 8am and among the first ones (ironically) to reach the Parks office at 11:01am. The path is very well maintained and an easy hike. You'll also see a lot of day hikers here, many with dogs. Along the way are some cool sights you won't want to miss, so don't be too quick to rush out. The abandoned dirt bike isn't going anywhere fast anymore, but be sure to check out the sea lion rock just passed km 10. You may even hear them from the trail! Just before the sea lions you'll also pass by the Pacheena Lighthouse. Again, due to covid, you cant access the grounds but you can totally snap a quick pic! The area has so much bear activity Parks Staff joke about running 'bear daycare' here so be vigilant. Two wonderfully enthusiastic young ladies we met along the way carried an amazing tune; Im sure they must've charmed away any "would be" encounters.
In 2016 there was no km 1 sign on the trail and in 2021 there was still no km 1 sign lol. Both times I raced past km 2 and then later wished I'd taken a pic with it. You'll want it as proof! We walked the very last km along the beach, where firm sand makes for easy going. There were bear sightings of a mother and cubs here just before we arrived. We missed them, but were lucky enough to get some great foot-print photos. The very last bench you'll see on the trail is emblazoned with the word 'PARKS'. We sat here for an eternal minute and took some photos. As we strolled towards the Information station I couldn't believe it was over again so quickly.

Looking back, even after time number two, it feels more like a dream. The first time I walked off the trail in 2016 I eagerly anticipated a hot shower, was thoroughly disappointed at finding I had no quarters for to pay for one and I spent the 5 hour bus ride home starving and trying to sleep on a roller coaster. Perhaps not such a glorious end, but I realized I had achieved something few people would in their life time and of that I was SO proud of Jenna and myself. We did it.
When I arrived back at work Sharon had the most glorious little bouquet of flowers for me and she glued tiny cut out flags of all the major trail milestones to skewer sticks throughout. It brought tears to my eyes.... she told me this, "for a while, you will think to yourself, I am NEVER going back to that EVER again. And then, slowly, you will forget all the bad parts and the thought will creep in... maybe, perhaps, I might try it again... and you will find yourself looking it up once more". And she was right, I did. And I am so glad I did... I might even do it again.

“Baby, what do you say we just get lost... heads, Carolina”
Oh, there are so many RV trip blogs that never got written! Alas, we are now home owners in Boone, North Carolina. And I am loving it here! I feel in some ways like we are still camping, finding little surprises around every turn and looking out our windows at trees and stars and beauty. I wanted a kitchen window with a view of the sunrise streaking through trees... well, the sun rises over mountains instead... as I watch Anina hike down our own little trail to the school bus... it sounds terrible, right?
So far our life here is filled with many many things that fill me with joy. Things I thought I wanted, and things I hadn’t ever anticipated. I keep wondering how, after hundreds of hours researching other places, we ended up in a town we spent zero time getting to know, and yet it aligns so splendidly with us. I keep wondering if the winter temps or the 1/4 mile driveway will irritate me to the point that I feel silly for writing this acclaiming blog. But the truth is, everything is not perfect, and it won’t ever be. But we’ve made challenging decisions as a family, and right now it feels great to live in this moment.
We’ve had to buy two new phones and a new computer, so my photos are so mixed up. This the best collection I could muster for a quick photo bombing of our mountainside magic....
Tumblr media
We’ve already celebrated 2 birthdays. Bill’s cake had blueberries on it.
Tumblr media
Wonder why blueberries? Look at that poor bush, falling over with so many blueberries. I couldn’t pick them fast enough! There are still berries on it.
Tumblr media
Most of our house, and the front yard. I’ll have to get a pic of the backyard one of these days.

This is our cliff. A geologist from the university brings students to study and sample the rocks!

My morning view to the east, out our front windows. I really need to learn how to set the camera for sunrises.

Their ‘green’ car. Luckily I grew up on a hill, so I know the effect of gravity on skateboards, bikes, basketballs...
Tumblr media
Kitten and snake(skin)! We have also seen a fox, a groundhog, a possum, chipmunks.

Whatever is in this soil, things grow.

The garden goodies we have inherited from the former property owner and our neighbor.

The driveway we walk up and down for the school bus!

Happy birthday ya East Booner, Carolina Hillbilly.
Tumblr media
This is actually Anina’s school. Benji’s already excited about riding the bus here next year for Kindergarten.
Tumblr media
This is the gigantic power pole in our front yard. Kinda ugly, kinda cool. Kept the house from being top dollar for unobstructed view...?
Tumblr media
Afterschool hugs. I’m sooooooo glad they have spent so much time together in the past several years. But I think everybody is enjoying some independence. And we have loved our afterschool hikes up to the house, and the absolutely perfect August and September weather we have had. The property is full of rocks to climb on, trails, flowers to pick, even a huge goldfish in a drainage pond. There is also a stream running along our street. Bill’s going to clear a path next summer so we can enjoy that as well!

A Respite in Paradise
The Paladins had made camp in one of the lush valleys of Celadon IV, an isolated, uncharted, Earth-like sphere located in the outermost edge of the Milky Way Galaxy. The Lions were nearly drained of all power when they arrived and Keith knew they would need a lengthy solar recharge. He ordered their little caravan to a halt, and suggested that the team take some time for much-needed rest and relaxation. This was one of Keith’s orders that Lance actually agreed with and wholeheartedly obeyed.
Hunk unloaded a barbecue grill from Yellow Lion’s cargo hold as soon as they landed and began rummaging through their meager stores of exotic meats to find something to grill. Coran helped with this and then began an inventory of their other foodstuffs while Shiro and Keith helped Allura and Romelle set up the camp.
After Pidge’s detailed analysis of the plants they had collected, it was determined that the local flora would not do any harm to Kalternecker’s digestive system. When they were sure of that, Lance and Pidge had immediately led the cow to the grassiest area that they could find and laughed at her satisfied “moo” of happiness at the sight of so much green. Once Kalternecker was free of her tether, she bucked with ecstasy and frolicked in the flowery meadow along with Kosmo. Both animals were accompanied by Pidge’s ever-curious blue and green floofs which hovered over the field, silently observing it all. While taking in all the natural beauty around him, Lance had a sudden urge to pull Pidge a bit closer to him. He slipped his right arm casually around her narrow shoulders as he often did, but this time he deliberately held her closer than before. She turned to look up at him questioningly with those huge, intelligent eyes of hers, and Lance suddenly felt his cheeks warm a little. He smiled at her and was surprised at how his heart raced when she smiled back at him. He noticed that several lose tendrils of her hair had escaped from her messy bun, and that there were a few more soft waves that framed her face. She was pale after living inside of a spaceship for so long, and he knew they both had dark circles under their eyes from a lack of proper sleep. The two of them were both still in their battered armor, and both of them were sweaty and tired, but in this peaceful moment Lance could not recall any sight that he had ever seen that was more beautiful than the one before him.
They heard Coran’s voice in the distance, summoning them back to camp. Supper was ready. The smell of Hunk’s cooking never failed to make his mouth water.
Pidge took his hand and ran with him back to camp. It was nearly dusk when they all finally sat down to enjoy the evening meal.
After bestowing Hunk with many well-deserved compliments for the incredible supper he had prepared, the Paladins had all gone to sleep under the stars, and at last spent an entire evening completely undisturbed.
Even before the bright sun of this small green planet was peeking over the horizon, Lance was wide awake. The others slept on as the sun rose, still exhausted from their long journey. He stretched, then rose to his feet, not bothering with putting on his armor. Lance silently gathered up his bayard, a clean change of clothes, a towel, and his grooming kit. Then he hiked down to the nearby stream, relishing his every lungful of the cool morning air. This planet almost smelled like home, and the sound of the clean, running water was like music to his ears after being in the silent vacuum of space for so long. Lance eagerly stripped off his black under suit and then slipped naked into the cool water. He shivered at first, but then realized that his body would soon adjust to the lower temperature. He had entered the stream with his small container of body shampoo on a cord around his neck and an exfoliating scrubber in hand. With a whoop of pure joy, he dispensed a small amount of the concentrated cleanser and then rubbed it into a fragrant lather, scrubbing away the grime that had accumulated on his skin after being in a spacesuit for far too long. It was invigorating! He sang to himself and splashed around in the water with the delight of a child as he rinsed the suds and the grime away. As he lathered shampoo into his hair and ducked under water to rinse it out, he realized how long it had gotten. He hated to admit it, but he had a mullet that was as long as Keith’s had been the night that they rescued Shiro. That was the night he and Hunk had snuck out of the Garrison, following after the mysterious “boy” named Pidge...
A familiar giggle brought him out of his reverie. Eyes wide, Lance sunk down deeper into the water, his back to the nearest bank. “Who’s there?” But he already knew the answer to that, and he really hoped she hadn’t seen anything. Lance bit his lip and blushed at the thought of it. There was another giggle. Pidge! He turned to face her, but she was already scampering away. He saw her hasty retreat, noticing that she was wearing her Garrison backpack over her black under suit and her hair was falling in matted tangles from her now even messier bun.
“We will have to find another spot,” he heard her call to the other two girls. “Lance is down there.”
“Ugh! The last thing I want to see is Pointy Chin without any clothes on,” said Romelle.
“Indeed,” said Allura. “I wouldn’t want to have to look at that either.”
Lance pouted angrily, feeling momentarily hurt.
Then there was that familiar giggle again, and he strained to hear what Pidge was saying.
“I wouldn’t mind,” Pidge admitted. “I actually think he’s pretty cute,” Lance’s mouth fell open once more, his mind whirling. The laughter of all three girls faded into the distance as they searched for a more private place to bathe.
Pidge.
Pidge thought he was cute? He suddenly felt even more self-conscious about his nakedness, and once he was sure the girls were far enough away, he hastily rose up from the water, dried off, and then wrapped the towel around his waist. He set up the shaving mirror from his kit and frowned at what he saw: stubble, a few zits, and a soggy mullet with wet, too-long bangs that dripped water into his eyes. What was Pidge thinking? This was the worst he had ever looked in recent memory. Maybe she was blind without her glasses. He began to panic, searching his kit for his razor and a face mask.
After a quick but careful shave, he rinsed and dried his face, hastily donned a pair of clean blue underpants and tied back his too-long hair. Lance sat upon a large, smooth rock and prepared the ingredients for his favorite face mask. Zits begone! If Pidge liked him as much as he had hoped, he was determined to look his best for her. After slathering the green paste all over his face, he rinsed his hands and relaxed. He laid back upon the now-warm, smooth stone and closed his eyes, allowing the mask to dry in the sun...
When Lance’s mind was nearly awake once more, it was already mid-morning, and the face mask had dried until it cracked. He didn’t want to get up to rinse it off though. He felt lazy, and he enjoyed the sensation of the warm sunlight caressing his (mostly) bare skin. If he just kept his eyes closed he could imagine he was back home in Cuba, laying out in the sun on Varadero Beach, surrounded by beautiful bikini-clad women, or more realistically, with at least one particular pretty girl by his side, bikini-clad or not. His half-awake mind conjured up an image of a pale, petite girl in a modest emerald green bathing suit. Her beautiful long brown hair was wet, as if she had just emerged from the sea. She was gazing on him fondly as he slept in the sun. Paradise, he thought.
In his semiconscious daydream, the cute girl at his side was calling his name.
“Lance?”
“Hmm?” he mumbled.
“Lance, wake up.” The cute girl touched his arm. “You can’t sleep here all day you know. The rest of the team is wondering where you are, but I figured you would still be here, so I came to get you.”
His eyes snapped open, and it took him a moment to process everything. For a moment he thought he actually was on the beach in Cuba, especially when he saw the scantily clad long-haired beauty beside him.
Pidge.
Pidge with her long hair down, still damp from being washed. Not Pidge on the beach in a bikini, but Pidge wearing a green sports bra and a pair of cut-off shorts she had made herself, which was almost as good. He had no idea she was this hot. Smoking hot. Dead sexy. Was he still dreaming? He grinned at her goofily and felt his face mask crack.
Lance’s mind ran through every swear word he knew in English and Spanish, and then all of the alien swear words he knew, and then some he wasn’t sure of, but he didn’t say any of them out loud. Instead, he emitted a high-pitched yelp of surprise when he realized that he was not, in fact, wearing swim trunks and lying on a beach in Cuba, but he was, in fact, lying on a sun-warmed slab of stone on an alien planet wearing nothing but his underpants and a dried up face mask.
“I think you need to wash your face,” Pidge said, hardly able to contain her amusement. He noticed that she didn’t say anything about his lack of trousers.
“Uh, right.” Lance scrambled to the stream again to rinse and dry his face, which felt much smoother and cleaner, and hopefully blemish-free. He heard her behind him, trying to suppress her giggles and not succeeding. She gave up on silencing them and was now laughing hysterically. Lance felt his face burn hotter than the sun.
“What’s so funny?” he asked. Stay cool, he told himself. He got up and turned around, then tried to strike a confident pose.
Pidge laughed so hard that tears rolled down her cheeks. “I don’t know what’s funnier, the face mask or the mullet, or—“ she broke off, wheezing. “Or...the fact—“ She tried to catch her breath. “The fact that...you are standing there, striking a pose like a designer underwear model, pretending this isn’t embarrassing.”
Pidge’s laughter was one of his favorite sounds in the universe, and to him it was always infectious. Lance broke down at that moment and started laughing at himself along with her. He tried to cover himself modestly with his towel as he reached for his blue jeans. Then he turned his back to her and did a very silly butt-wiggling dance as he wriggled into them. Pidge was laughing so hard that she had to gasp for air. When he finally pulled up his jeans and zipped them, he turned to her and gave her his most smoldering look as the breeze ruffled his long hair.
“Now you look like one of the shirtless himbos in the ads for those trashy romance holodramas my mom watches.”
Lance sat down next to her, his sides shaking with laughter at her description of him. “Oh, no! My mom watches that junk too, and they’re the worst. I definitely want a haircut now.”
Pidge was still wiping the tears of mirth from her eyes. “That’s why I’m here. Coran just gave Shiro and Hunk a haircut, but you missed yours, Sleeping Beauty.” She held up Coran’s clippers and a pair of Altean scissors. “And I missed my haircut too, in order to go looking for you.”
“Sleeping Beauty?” He said with a smirk. “Okay, I am going to pretend that isn’t sarcasm. If I’m a Sleeping Beauty, then why didn’t you awaken me with a kiss?” He thought his flirting was going well in spite of how humiliating this day had been for him so far.
Pidge blushed. “Maybe because I’d rather kiss you when you’re awake?” She said this timidly. Flirting wasn’t something she was accustomed to doing.
“You can kiss me anytime you want, whether I’m asleep or awake.” He said this to her earnestly, revealing more of his true feelings for her than he ever thought he could dare to admit. Lance was blushing in spite of himself. So much for being cool and confident.
Pidge looked at him wide eyed, then ducked her head shyly. Lance tipped her chin up gently, then gently caressed her cheek. They were both breathing raggedly as he moved closer to her. But just as he leaned down to kiss her, she pulled away.
“I can’t let you do this,” Pidge was shaking like terrified prey, trapped in a hunter’s snare. She looked ready to flee.
“Pidge? What’s wrong?” Lance reached for her. “Don’t go! Please, just talk to me. I don’t understand why—“
“I can’t be another one of those girls that you flirt with and forget about!” She she choked out. She was sobbing.
“Pidge! I would never—“
“You’re the only one that I have ever felt this way about and—“ She paused to catch a breath. “If you kiss me it has to mean as much to you as it does to me.” She looked at him boldly now, and even though her face was tear-stained, Lance thought she had never looked more beautiful or more courageous.
He was the one who was terrified now, afraid to say or do the wrong thing. He gaped at her in astonishment, stunned into silence.
Pidge waited for him to say something, but he was still just staring at her, trying to process what she was trying to tell him, and trying to figure out what to do next.
Her mind worked at light speed compared to his. She had already come to a conclusion and turned to leave.
“Pidge, wait!” Lance cried. She kept walking.
“Katie!” She did not stop. Lance knew he had to say something or his heart would shatter into a million pieces. There was no way to repair a heart that badly broken.
“Katie Holt, I am in love with you!” He shouted, and his words echoed around the valley. Then there was a frightening silence between them that caused his heart to momentarily stop beating. They might have been on a silent planet if not for the incessant babbling of the uncaring brook behind them.
She stood there, unmoving, but she did not turn to him.
“I love you. I always have. I guess I was waiting for the right time to tell you, and I was also waiting for you to grow up because you’re younger than me, and I guess I also realized I was the one who really needed to mature a lot more before I could be in a real relationship because you’ve always been more mature than me and—“
She turned around. Lance continued to babble more incessantly than the creek. It was if a dam had burst and a torrent of heartfelt words tumbled forth, as unstoppable as a flood.
“You’re the most amazing girl I have ever met in my entire life and you’re my best friend and I love being with you more than anyone else in the whole universe and I don’t just want to kiss you I want to belong to you, now and always. I want to spend a lifetime laughing with you or just listening to you say brilliant things every day or just watching the sunset with you or just being with by your side when you need me or even when you don’t need me, because I need you and I want to be a part of your life forever. I adore you, Katie, and I-“
Pidge stopped his barrage of words the only way she knew how. With all her strength, she leapt into his arms and embraced him. She stopped the flow of words at the source, kissing him fiercely as Lance lowered her gently to the ground.
Lance had been kissed a fair few times in his life, but he had never experienced anything like this. It was like flying, like being struck by lightning. It was like being born, and living, and dying, and being brought back to life again. It was like all of those things, and none of those things. She had poured into that kiss what he had been struggling to say with words that were far too meager to express the infinite.
When they broke apart, Lance just gazed upon her in shock and reverent silence.
“You are the first and only man I have ever loved and will always love. You are in my heart, and if anything bad ever happened to you, a part of me would die. That is how I love you.” She sobbed. “That’s the only way I know how to love you.”
Lance buried his face in her hair, which was soft, fragrant, wild, and very soon damp with his own tears of relief. He held her close and comforted her as she sobbed happy tears against his bare chest.
When they finally regained control of their emotions, he lead her to the stream. They both washed their faces.
“I missed breakfast,” he began. “I hope I didn’t make you miss lunch.” Much to Pidge’s disappointment, Lance pulled on his old blue and white T-shirt.
Pidge opened her backpack. In it there were sandwich rolls, snacks, and cold drinks. “I didn’t know how long it would take to find you, but somehow I knew you would be hungry when I did.” She decided to put on her well worn Galaxy Garrison T-shirt, which was too small for her. Lance grinned, hoping he could hide his expression behind the first bite of his sandwich.
“You think of everything.”
“That’s because I’m brilliant.”
“I am definitely going to marry you when this war is over, you know that, don’t you?”
“You’d better.” There was a beautiful peace between them, like the calm after a storm. “You still need that haircut.”
“I know. Promise me you won’t cut your hair though. It’s beautiful.”
“It’s too long. I can barely fit it under my helmet anymore.”
“I could braid it for you.”
“Really? And what do you actually know about braiding hair?”
“I have sisters. I used to braid Veronica’s hair until she cut it short, and Rachel’s hair is still pretty long, or at least it was last time I saw her...”
They spend the rest of the afternoon reminiscing about home and talking about their hopes for the future.
*****
Kaltenecker came to the stream to drink that afternoon, and Pidge’s floofs hovered nearby, watching their beloved human friend beside the male human she loved most.
The floofs observed their dear little human attempting to give the male human’s head fur a trim. They saw that both of them thought the result was very funny. Their little female human cried at the mistakes she made when trimming head fur, but the floofs knew it would be alright because the tall male human seemed to be pleased with her efforts nonetheless. He rubbed his face against hers many times, as they often did to her. Of course, the floofs knew that this meant that the tall human loves their dear little one, and that she was very happy about it indeed. Clearly, it was some sort of human courtship ritual.
Perhaps they would mate and have little floofs of their own one day.
But that was a story for another time.

wooowowowoo i miss summer camp so much
like this is my second year without going and as much as it sucked i loved it
there is a large rant about the place and like every single living detail i remember about it under the cut (is that the right phrase to use for this idk)
like the big field with the train tracks next to it and the beehives on one edge. i miss throwing a frisbee for my few friends there and laughing when i would get it stuck in a tree or they would throw it and it would go so far away. and i miss jumping on the trampoline and getting so pissed off (jokingly) at the dudes spending like 10 decades on it and because i was the only british person there they would be somewhat scared of me? so i would literally stare at them somewhat angrily and with my shitty latvian accent complain about how long they are taking and they would get off LMAO it only worked on the dudes younger than me but it worked... and the basketball on the small court !!! :D im not good at like,, throwing ball type games tbh? but like this court was magical because like 9/10 i would actually get it in and score a point and i loved how,, rapid (?) the games were like if you failed to get it in at a certain point you would be out and you had to get it in to stay in the game !!
and i remember the lake!!! it had a lot of those thingies.. oysters? idk i googled it and thats what they looked like. i can still remember the feeling of them and they were sharp LMAO and there was a zipline thing you could go on and it would take you to the middle of the lake and you could jump into it from there. and there was a game we played where we would be in two teams and then we would send a person down the zipline and if they fell in we would all have to do i think 10? pushups and it was fun cheering on people from the small platforms next to the zipline !! and we used to build a sorta dodgy looking sauna using some planks of wood and a big blue tarp that was held down by some rocks and we would collect sticks to make a fire with and then we would go sit in it and just talk and chill in the sauna. not everyone wanted to go, understandably considering iirc i put it off the first year i went but then tried it the next and loved it, so there was enough room for all of us to comfortable sit and even lie down on the log benches !! and we even had like,, bay leaf sticks with the leaves on it and stuff and we would dunk them into a bucket of water and then gently hit someone who was lying down as a like,,, relaxation thing? and it was so nice and it smelt SO GOOD it smelt like wood and grass and nature and it was sweet in a savoury way and i miss the smell so much just thinking about it. like you could literally smell the bay leaves because of the water evaporating after you take it out the bucket. and the hot air was so much harder to breathe when you stood up and it felt thicker and the air lower to the ground was cool so when you found it hard to breathe you would basically stick your head onto the grass to get a bit of cool and it felt so good !! and we would take breaks to drink water and pour cold water on ourselves or we would go into the lake though the last time i went a lot of the lake had dried up D: but its okay because i still have good memories with the lake when it wasnt like that. once during the sauna we went in the lake after and the sky was so clear like i could see all the stars and i could see the big dipper and it was just so beautiful. i even used the zipline to get into the lake that time as well and it was just so magical. i was kinda like,, sleepy (?) so i kinda was just not fully there so it was like so much cooler because i didnt feel real during it and it was just amazing.
omg and the activities we would do. we went on a hike in a forest and it was SO COOL like we would have to go climb up the steep hill that separated the field area and the train tracks and we would literally go onto the train tracks and at the time there wasnt any trains so we got to literally touch the tracks and we would go into the forest and IT WAS SO COOL like the light came in at a perfect angle and it was so pretty and we would pick blueberries and aaaaaaaa it was so amazing !! and we would split up and walk to an area to play some games using the trees and it was amazing. and also we would just do sports games using the field but also we went BIKING!!!! they had so many bikes for the people who didnt bring their own and we would go on the bikes and cycle to some sand dunes literally like 5 minutes away from the place and climb up them and jump and stuff and we carved tic tac toe grids into the stable parts and played and it was so fun AND I LITERALLY SAW A LIZARD CLIMB UP ONE OF THE EDGES INTO THE GRASS LMAO and we also cycled to a lake
Tumblr media
this one to be exact!! and we would jump off from the small pier thing and swim around back to the edge and it had sand and a slide and it was generally really fun cycling to and from there. i did cause multiple crashes with the bikes while cycling there LMAO mainly because my brain just tends to blow things out of proportion for no reason and like LMAO someone would start coming a bit closer to me and i would panic and stop and then everyone behind me would then have to immediately stop and they would crash into me.. like once i got my cousin to come with me and someone looked like they were gonna go behind my cousin who was in front of me and i panicked because i didnt want to be separated from her so i just stopped because i was panicking too much and everyone behind me crashed into me LMAO and they were all like 'bruuuuh' but anyways it was really fun cycling there because i went past the place my aunt on my mums side got married + the place my uncle on my dads side got married (no they did not marry each other it was separate weddings) !! a few times i didnt go cycling because i just didnt feel good and didnt want to go but it was okay in the end because i was all alone in the cabin and i would just sleep and draw while waiting for them to come back and they would flood in cycling down the small hill that leads to the field and has the bike area and i would just see them from the porch of the cabin and it was cool :D
mMmMmmmmmMMM and the food area !! we would usually sit inside the pizzeria (because the place was also a pizzeria more on that later) and it was fun because we had breakfast, lunch, dinner + a night snack thing (its called naksniņas) and like even though im usually the pickest eater at the camp and they had to make exceptions for me because we werent allowed dessert at lunch unless we ate all our food like i still got to eat a lot lol like there was usually something i could eat even if i couldnt eat all of it and the juice was so nice and ngl i kinda liked being on the like,,, duty of having to set up before the meals + clean up after because getting all the stuff and setting it up was just so peaceful and calm and i loved it and mmmmsmsmsmsmsm it was so cool and THE NIGHT SNACK THING WAS LITERALLY THE BEST it was practically dessert for dinner but right before bed + we would do an activity after dinner before it !! i talked to my dad and figured out the spelling of the word because im not that good at latvian atm and mmmm . also like we would have tea and it was so good !! we would also have a small snack like a biscuit or cereal bar and it was so nice good way to end the day :D
i also lost an entire waterbottle there dont ask how
the cabins were nice because i usually end up on the second floor level thing of it and theres a small window on it !! and a cool ladder to get up to it though its a pain when camp first starts + when it finishes because you have to pack everything up while trying to not hit your head on any of the beams or the slant of the cabin roof and you have to haul everything up and down... other than that its so fun because theres small holes (like,,, really small. cant fit a pen down it) and when the people in the two rooms below that cabin spot are being pisstaking you can pour water down it and they shut up LMAO its really funny because they see the water dripping and get more pissed off and then become less annoying and we used to slip them notes to tell them to shut up LMAO also listened into their convos to be annoying too
anyways to finish off with my favouritest things ever about it. last day we would make pizzas and your family would be there and you could make multiple pizzas ! i usually made one for my parents / family and then one for myself and my sister because we r really picky and dont like cheese . and it was so fun and the pizzas were SO GOOD and i share the other pizza thats not mine with my family because i hate cheese and they are happy too. i also love the one evening where we cook dinner ourselves i think thats the sauna night as well but omg its so nice we have dough balls to wrap around a stick and asduidfohih its so nice omg i love them so much right because we take the stick and then toast them over a fire and when you do them right its a tiny bit doughy on the inside but a safe amount and its like,, slightly crispy in a good way on the outside so amazing and like you can put stuff in it like cheese and ketchup and stuff but i just eat mine plain and they are so good mmmamMMm and we also have watermelon iirc and it was so good overall like best evening of the camp :)
anyways i love camp and i miss it

(The first chapter of my 18+ Undertale Fic ‘Monsterous Skeletonus’ is complete!)
(It’s gonna be a -very- slow burn, but there will be a whole lot of the UF Skelebro’s (G included!) in later chapters and a whole lot of eventual smut to go with it, even if the plot is gonna be heavier than a semi as it maps out 👀)
(Once I get it proof read fully I’m going to post it on A03!)
.................
‘Alright, alright! Easy now. We don’t need anyone breaking a leg, do we?’
‘Ugh, why do we need to go -all- the way down here? It’s not like the machinery for this shit doesn’t exist. I feel like a old school miner or something, y’know?’
‘Hey! That’s no way for a brave explorer to talk, Meg! Don’t you want to see what’s down there? Could be all sorts of cool, weird stuff!’
‘Like what? More rocks and dirt?~ Oh! Maybe some ‘sand’ even? Give me a break’
‘Guys, d-don’t start arguing. We’re going to be down here f-for a while so it’s best to get along~’
.................
The varying chatter of excited, muffled voices ringing down into the unknown, inky blackness of what was assumed to be a rather hidden among the weeds and rocks but still wide crevice leading into Mt. Ebott that had been only recently discovered, the forested area had been well scouted out over the past few weeks and had been mapped well so that the current team leading the charge wouldn’t have to contend with trying to figure out where their destination would be by sight alone.
The ‘team’, otherwise known as FTL (Future team leaders. A cheesy name if there had ever been one) were simply a group of third year Geo students who had been tasked with taking core samples from the innermost caverns of Mt. Ebott for substrate testing. It wasn’t exactly a glamorous job by any stretch of the word but it was good experience for the youngsters in terms of field work, the leader of the group of ragtag students, a rather burley, bearded man named Sean and his partner Gunter already being at the bottom of the cavern as they waited for the rest of his team to follow suit, the impatient Sean watching as Meg and Desmond, the third and fourth oldest on the team respectively, carefully sidled their way down the craggy rock surface, arguing all the way much to the usually cheerful but honest mans chagrin.
“The more you guys complain the more time your gonna spend down here getting the damn samples. We still have to set up camp too so I suggest you guys pick up the pace”.
A collective groan coming from the duo grappling down, Desmond and Meg soon reached the bottom of the dimly lit cavern while two other members on the surface still suited up, Terra and Mira, a pair of naive adventurers if there ever were any, looking seriously nervous as they prepared to begin the descent down into the unknown.
“You ready?”, Mira smiling nervously at the freckle faced Terra as her friend nodded back hesitantly, it was more often than not that Mira was the braver one between the both of them, Terra being more of the ‘I’ll just follow you for safety sake’ type ever since they were children and Mira often having had to assume a’leadership’ role because of it.
Not that she minded it at all though! If anything, the short-stack of a girl enjoyed leading her best friend through the forest and hills when they were merely kids, the both of them often fighting imaginary monsters and imagining what it would be like to climb the forbidding and dangerous Mt. Ebott that had the reputation of housing -real- beasts and all sorts of angry spirits for centuries.
Well, according to many a scary bedtime story it did at least, Mira no really longer believing such childish fantasies and thinking them about as real as a monster under the bed. The girl had always been terrified as a kid by the thought of some horrific creature climbing down the mountain and snatching her up in the night when she misbehaved, her being unable to look back at those times without laughing at how her own imagination used to run wild.
“Y-yeah, let’s just take it easy though, alright?”.
Terra blushing nervously as Mira grinned and the both of them began the slow descent down into the inner workings of the massive Mt. Ebott, the dark slag that covered most of the upper surface area soon gave way to crumbly, brown flecks of caked in dirt about halfway down that rained into the depths below at the smallest touch, the bright entrance to the surface growing smaller and yet smaller still as eventually it was merely a pin prick of light far, far above the teams head when Terra and Mira finally hit the weirdly soft and rather squishy ground beneath.
“See? We made it down okay~”, Mira helping to unclip Terra’s equipment as she could tell her fellow team mate was uneasy, she was used to Terra being a bit of a worry wart but she seemed to be especially unnerved today for some reason, “Told ya we would make it in one piece”. Sticking her tongue out playfully at Terra as the girl batted her hand away with a sigh once she was unclipped, Mira laughed as Sean meanwhile approached with bottles of water for both of them.
“Hey now! Looks like you made it all in one piece!~”, Sean smirking broadly as he playfully patted the nervous looking Terra on the back, the girl smiled small as she watched the others in the group already beginning to set their bags down alongside the smooth, stone covered walls of the wide, expansive cavern they had landed in.
The circular area where they stood being lit by a few torches that Gunter, a rather quiet short man that was second in command to Sean had placed around what would be their designated base area, it was easy to tell that whatever this place was it must have been pretty damn old, scraggy bits of moss and thick, thorny vines creeping up the strangely, almost ‘carved’ looking walls that were reminiscent of a oversized well in a way.
The dirt covered ground being rather soft and squishy as was mentioned previously, it wasn’t ‘wet’ but had the texture and feel of a half absorbed sponge that had been wrung out and left to dry, bits of dried plant matter, green and yellow, making up a bulk of the signs of life that had floated down from the surface to the seemingly lifeless cave over the years, a large pile of the shriveled mess having formed a rather neat mound directly below the gleaming entrance far above.
Meanwhile, the lack of hardiness in the soil was proving difficult for Desmond to drive the stakes for his tent into by his annoyed grunts and frustrated strings of cusses.
Nature wasn’t for everyone apparently.
A naturally formed but crooked arch towards the east appearing to lead deeper into whatever lay beyond the teams immediate landing spot, it was oddly convenient, almost as if it was beckoning anyone who fell or grappled their way down here to enter it and take a chance with whatever dangers laid beyond Its dismal, abyss like entryway.
Mira getting a bit of a odd vibe from the area as she decided to stick by her team mates side for now, there would be plenty of time to explore later, her taking a sip from her water bottle with a content sigh as Sean soon formed everyone in a loose huddle to discuss their next plan of action.
“Alright!”, Clapping a hand to get everyones attention as he visually assessed that his team was safe and sound, Sean held his constant, positive outlook proudly even as most of his members looked exhausted from the day trek up Ebott and grappling down here, “Now, we all know why we’re here, collecting samples and all that fun stuff. Of course, to avoid outside contamination from -that-“, Sean pointed upwards at the tiny prick of light to the surface above them, “We are going to have to do a bit of traveling inwards once morning hits!”.
“Oh! Does that mean we get to see how far all this goes?~”, Mira speaking up as she genuinely seemed excited about the possibility of traveling farther into the cave system, she ignored the sound of Meg behind her muttering something annoyed under her breath, “I hear some of these caves can stretch for -miles-!”.
“Andddd your exactly right, kiddo! Of course, we only need to collect samples unspoiled by outside contamination. We won’t need to travel too terrible far in for that, but I wouldn’t discount the idea of another trip down here if funding for this pans out”, Sean winking at Mira as the pint sized girl blushed and internally swooned, a intentional, rough cough from Desmond seemed to break the pair out of whatever little ‘thing’ was blooming between them as he motioned to the tents that still needed to be set up.
“Yeah, uh, a-anyways, another thing guys, I don’t want to see anyone wandering off either, got it? We have no idea where these caverns might lead and the last thing we need is to have to send out a rescue squad to find one of you. I’m sure everyone has heard the horror stories of those idiots who decide to go off alone and wind up wedged under a boulder or something”.
Sighing a bit awkwardly to himself as he seemed to get the hint across to his team judging from the murmurs of acknowledgement they gave, Sean was a natural leader and the head of this group obviously....but sometimes it was a bit difficult to get everyone on the same page, the only real ‘friendship’ between them all outside of being grouped students and cavers being Terra and Mira, two of the youngest mates among them.
This was going to be a long, difficult journey if they couldn’t all manage to find a common ground to communicate on, but at least in the end their mission was likely to prove successful now that they had arrived safely in the interior workings of Ebott as planned with barely a scratch.
Soon enough everyone would be back on the surface and they could all go their separate ways, but for now there was work to be done in terms of getting tents set up and dinner ready, the long hike just to get to the top of Ebott having been almost a full days worth of energy.
“Meg, you get a fire and dinner set up since Desmond already has the tents”, Pulling out a small note paid from his pocket as he scribbled something down while he spoke, Sean than looked at Terra and Mira as his usually eager eyes seemed to grow a bit more tense in thought as he rubbed his temple slowly with his free hand.
“And you two....Just...don’t do anything stupid, okay? We don’t want another Cauldron incident. That -especially- goes for you Mira, got it?”.
“Uh...yeah, y-yes Sir”, Mira blushing and nodding once as she glanced at Terra who now had a chance to smile and nudge her friend back playfully, neither of them particularly were proud of the unspoken ‘Cauldron’ incident but it was good reason for them to stay put and out of the way.
...........................
The team taking the next hour or two to set up tents and unpack gear, the plan was for a three day excursion to take samples from the depths of Ebott for both sediment and groundwater exploration. Of course, no one had really ever been -in- this mysterious cave system until now to map it out, the next few days having the potential to be longer or shorter depending on exactly how difficult the terrain proved to be to navigate.
By the time Meg had managed to scrap together a decent fire and everyone had settled down around it for a meal of rationed leek and potato Soup, the group seemed to be more than happy to simply have the chance to relax and take off their worn jackets and boots, The night sky far, far above them having the faintest sparkle of stars and moon mist to indicate the time of day on the surface.
Mira sitting to the left of Terra and near Sean on a blanket while Gunter sat near Desmond on the ground and Meg had perched herself on her bag, it could have almost be called a crude form of camping in a way if any of the said campers shared any sense of shared camaraderie.
“I’ve always heard weird things about this mountain, y’know? Things like ghosts and goblins and the like”, Desmond sipping his soup as he spoke with a sly grin, the flannel shirted man seemed to enjoy the way he made the nervous Terra especially perk up and shuffle ever so closer to Mira like a lost pup.
“How they especially like to eat little kids that wander away from home....Yeah, I bet they are just waiting to snatch some new prey up when they get a chance~”.
“Real mature, Des. I bet it took you all day to come up with that one, right?”, Meg rolling her blue eyes as the man continues to grin and simply drank his soup, Mira meanwhile seemed to be quite curious about what Desmond was getting at though as she suddenly became a bit more attentive.
“Well...I’m not a kid and neither is Terra, so we should be fine~”, Smiling lightly as she kind of wanted Desmond to continue talking about his little stories of what might be in these mountains, her gaze silently urged him to keep speaking as she let Terra cuddle close to her for warmth.
Desmond chuckling and shaking his head at Mira’s assertion that she wasn’t a child, he closed his eyes for a moment in thought, “ Nah, you don’t wanna hear stuff like that before bed, believe me”.
“B-but, I mean it, I’m really curious about -all- that kind of stuff! Cryptids, ghosts, you name it! I-I mean I don’t -believe- in any of it...it’s just, uh...fascinating I guess”.
“Mmm, I think he might be right, Mira. Besides, we should be hitting the sack soon anyways. Everyone’s got a big day ahead tomorrow”, Sean raising a brow at Mira’s apparent interest in what might be lurking around the inner workings of Ebott, his input seemed to only fuel Mira’s insistence in knowing more about what she thought Desmond was ‘hiding’ from her because he saw her as merely a kid.
“Come on, just -one- story?~ You can’t just lead me on like that”, Mira feeling Terra cuddle a bit closer to her even more so as she seemed to be persistent enough to convince Desmond to give in, the man sighed and put his empty cup down as Mira internally cheered that he seemed he was going to tell them more about his creepy tales.
“Alright alright, but only one, got it? Man, you kids these days know how to work a old mans feelings”.
........................
................
.........
Sleep coming easy for the exhausted group by the time Desmond had sufficiently managed to spook nearly everyone out with his tale of a creature called the ‘Crooked handed woman’, Terra had, as usual, decided to remain by Mira’s side even when they were comfortably safe inside their tents and was cuddled up next to her best friend once the group had decided to call it a night.
It wasn’t as if Mira minded much that the perpetually nervous girl wanted to share a tent, her honestly thriving off the warmth that the both of them being this close gave in this unnaturally cold cavern.
Desmond’s tale still ringing in the back of Mira’s mind as she fell into a mild sleep not long after getting herself comfortable, the thought of some old, crone like hag with skin like old onion paper and a twisted and gnarled hand with a ‘mind of its own’ was enough to keep her up a little after everyone else had fallen asleep, the occasional sound of what Mira assumed was dried leaves shuffling outside her tent instinctively making her cuddle up a bit more in her sleeping bag to feel smaller.
Yeah, maybe it hadn’t been the best idea to beg Desmond to tell his tale after all....
‘T-there isn’t anything out there! Stop being stupid and get your mind off of it already!’
Maybe Desmond was right to not want to tell his creepy stories when what she really needed was to sleep for tomorrows expedition deeper into the cave, Mira sighing a bit to herself as she watched Terra’s soft, unworried, sleeping face next to her own as she slowly tried to lull her body into rest as well.
............
......
-scerch scerch...scritch....~
‘W-what? What is that?’
Mira cracking her groggy eyes open after a minute or so of letting her mind rest, the sound of rustling ‘leaves’ outside of her tent had for a second or two became a bit louder than before, her senses instinctively going on high alert as she waited in silence to see if she wasn’t truly just going crazy from exhaustion.
...............
.........
‘scritch scritch....-c r u u u u n c h-
.............
The sound of what Mira could best describe as one of the Lit-A-Fire portable logs that had been put out by Sean earlier snapping slowly in half, the girls heart was pounding in her chest by now as it was more than obvious that someone, or some t h i n g, was out there just beyond her tent, her wide eyes focusing on the still sleeping Terra in front of her as she debated on waking her friend up to investigate.
‘No, she is just gonna freak out. Just stay put Mira...I-it’s probably just Sean or someone out there....’
............
-c r u n c h-
The sound of another one of the logs seemingly being split in half reaching Mira’s ears as she squeezed her eyes shut and tried not to panic, a odd tapping noise, almost like long nails clicking on stone, was a new sound to emerge after a few seconds of silence, the story she had heard from Desmond earlier returning to her already panicking young mind ten fold.
The old lady with her crooked hand and it’s long, gnarled nails....t-there was no way it was real, right?
............
.......
-tap tap-
A terrified, muffled squeak coming from Mira as she buried her head in her bag, the sound was now right outside of her tent as she felt Terra stir besides her, her not wanting to see who or whatever was attempting to seemingly try to get her attention as the front zipper of the girls shared tent opened rather slow and quietly.
“G-go away!!”.
Mira bolting up and slamming a pillow directly into the face of a most perplexed looking Gunter, the sleepy, heavy set man crunched his brow together as he put his hands up in a mock fashion to show he surrendered.
“Hey there, just calm down!”, Shaking his head once as he tried to speak quietly to avoid waking Terra, Mira blushed heavily out of shame as she immediately seemed to realize how stupid she had been to think that the kindly second in command to Sean had been some kind of ‘monster’.
“Was wonder’in if ya had the first aid in here. Kinda stepped on some of the logs while going to take a leak...and, well...”, Gunter running a hand along his hairline as Mira immediately went to hand off the box of medical supplies to the sleepy looking man that resided safely by the tent entrance, the pink blush she had sprouted didn’t leave her face as she sighed and retrieved her pillow she had thrown at him as well.
“Sorry bout that....”, Speaking quietly as she hugged the parcel to her chest, Mira was merely given a nod by the typically introverted Gunter as he went to zip the tent back up, her and the still sleeping Terra once again being left in the dark, Mira feeling like a total fool for letting Desmond and his stupid story get to her to the point of her actually thinking some terrifying beast had been shuffling about outside.
..............
........
-Scritchhhhhh~
Laying back down to -finally- get some much needed sleep, Mira paid little mind to the sound of what she assumed was Gunter bandaging up his wounded foot, her giving a mighty yawn as she wrapped a arm around Terra and-
..........
-B A N G-
.............
A heavy, extremely loud jolt rocking the pairs tent and apparently the others nearby as she could hear the sound of confused yelling and tired murmurs almost all at once, the startled Terra too blinked her eyes open as she gave a scared, confused look to Mira, her putting a finger to her lip to silently signal to the younger girl to remain quiet as she unzipped and peeked out of the tent to see what the heck was up now.
.......
-B A N G!!!-
A heavy, hot pressure nearly collapsing the heavy canvas tent in on both Terra and Mira as the girls let out a terrified cry of confusion as the fabric fell around them, Mira even under the mess could tell that Sean was shouting indistinguishable words to the others in a apparent panic at whatever was going on, Meg’s just as muffled, frantic pleas mixing in with his orders as Mira tried to yank Terra out from under their collapsed tent as another heavy bang and a sudden, strange whistling noise erupted around them again.
“T-Terra! We need to get out of here!!!”.
Terra, fearful tears streaming down her face as Mira grabbed a hold of her wrist while a bright flash of what could only have been described as a ‘ball of green hued flames’ slammed into the opposing wall nearest where Desmond and Meg’s tent had been, Mira squirmed out from the remnants of tent fabric as she didn’t bother or try to look at whatever or whoever was causing this havoc, her only instinct telling her to run as far away with Terra as she could while she still had the chance.....
Whatever was going on m-must have been some weird, natural cave phenomenon....that was the only real explanation Mira could come up with on the fly e-even if it made little sense logically....
Flames just didn’t shoot out of nowhere like this though.....but maybe since Ebott was rumored to be a long dormant volcano t-that had something to do with all of this?
As little sense as it made it was the -only- logic running through Mira’s imagination as she tried to block out the frantic sound of yelling and screaming back from base, the loud crack of a shotgun being added to the fray as Mira practically dragged Terra towards the archway nearby.
The dimness of the cavern making it nearly impossible for the pair to get their footing as the torches from earlier had been put out by Sean in anticipation of a good nights rest, Mira blindly ran towards the stone archway that led deeper into the yet unexplored inner cavern, her bare feet scrapping painfully along the much rougher, cement-like surface of the pitch black entry way into the unknown depths.
Her nearly crushing Terra’s wrist in her grip as she pulled the hyperventilating and crying girl along, the sound of the carnage from the base camp was now only a muffled, distant drone as the wide eyed and fully shocked Mira eventually stopped to take a breath once they reached a narrow alcove that was eerily silent and still compared to the chaos outside.
“Y-you alright?~”, Whispering softly to Terra as she held her sobbing friend close to her chest, Mira tried to shush Terra but it wasn’t doing much good, the easily terrified girl unable to calm herself as she clung to Mira tightly.
“I want to go -home-, Mira! Coming down h-here was a mistake! I -knew- it was a bad idea and now look what happened! We need to g-go back and help them!!”.
“I know, I wanna go home too....but I don’t think going back there is the best option right now”, Mira trying to give Terra a little smirk to lighten the mood but failing miserably, it didn’t help much at all as Terra simply broke out into a fresh round of sobbing, “We will figure this out, okay?~ I-I’m sure things aren’t as bad as they seem and we probably just over reacted. To be honest I bet this is one of Sean’s stupid pranks”.
“Thats -not- funny and you know that isn’t true!! F-for all we know Sean a-and Desmond and everyone else is hurt back there! I dont know what happened but whatever a-accident or...-thing- tore up all our tents...but we are going to have to go back and help them!”.
The sound of the distant drone of chaos back from the base slowly growing less urgent as a unnerving silence began to replace it instead, Mira gave Terra a look that said to not even try it, her keeping her grip on her friends wrist as tight as ever.
“Listen...”, Mira taking a hold of Terra’s trembling hand as she tried to be the braver one between them, she sensed that the agitated girl was going to run off the first chance she saw to who knows where and wasn’t going to take the risk of letting that happen.
“Your going to stick with me until we can figure out what’s going on, okay? Going it alone in this place...seems a bit, uh, dangerous...”.
“B-but Mira!-“.
Mira letting out a deep, exhausted sigh as she shuffled Terra to her chest for comfort with the girls protesting, it was partially to avoid letting her see the nervous tears forming in her own eyes, Mira not being cut out to be a leader on the fly like this by any means.
“We need to see if there are any other exits out of here. I know this is scary a-and all, but I know you can do this, Terra~ I know your really brave deep down even if you don’t think it”, Giving her friends hand one last squeeze of determination as Terra seemed to brighten up slightly at Mira’s kind words, the darkness ahead of them seemed to be silently daring the inexperienced pair to take it on, there being no chance of going back now as Mira gave a slight tug of Terra’s arm to prompt her along into the unexplored and potentially hazardous new world, “We are going to get out of here together, I promise”.
Unfortunately for the unwary girls, the journey ahead of them wasn’t going to be easy and the chance of either making it back to the surface at all was slim, a certain green eyed, rather dirty furred ‘beast’ already being well aware of Mira and Terra’s presence~

Bones - A Creepypasta
A/N: Wrote this for Mrcreeps on reddit, figured I'd post it here cuz why not.

When I was young I’d loved nature, camping, fishing, playing in creeks and climbing trees. Growing up in central California there was lots of great camping sites that were never too far of a drive for my family, so we went on woodland excursions often. Especially in the summer when the weather was nice.
Love of the outdoors runs in my family, and that meant we were aptly prepared for all of our trips in terms of supplies and knowledge of surrounding areas. In short, we never had a bad camping trip that was caused by our own ill-preparedness. Though we’d had a few ruined by unexpected weather, freak rainstorms in the middle of summer that kept us holed up in a tent or RV for days.
I thoroughly enjoyed trips to one place in particular, a private campground, that’s been in my family for generations, and is on the border of a Native American reservation, and used to contain cattle. It is very large and very wild, still containing patches of rusted barbed wire fence and littered with old cow bones depending on where you go. Most of the cow things of course are in the old pasture, which is also scattered with old cabin parts: gas stoves that don’t work, beds and tables rotted or half eaten by termites.
Though those fences, and a few old cabins, most no longer usable, are the most permanently human thing about the place. There are no trails, besides the rode to reach the camp. If you want to hike, you have to drive quite a bit to get to trails, otherwise you can explore the vast campground without a path. There are sprawling meadows, wet and marshy, squelching beneath your every footstep, sucking you deep into the mud. Then the creek, surrounding by willows and all sorts of little greens, crawling with insects and chock full of lively fish, snatching the bugs from the air, disappearing beneath the murky surface once more. The creek bed is deep, and isn’t full in the summer so there’s a wall of stacked granite rocks before the tree lined banks, terrible to climb.
Finally there is the true woods, densely packed, towering sequoias. My mother always told me with a childlike awe, how some of them could be thousands of years old. I was already short, still am for my age, but these trees made me feel small and insignificant, like I had been dwarfed by them in a way that nothing else ever could. Though there had been fires in this area, the large trees had recovered, sporting a shell like look near there roots where they had been damaged and regrown. It was ominous to me, yet simultaneously beautiful.
It’s also got beautiful wildflowers, so many, everywhere, i thought it was weird that they were in the pasture too, but my mom says the cow pies fertilized them. I found the idea a little gross, but I loved the flowers. There were little purple ones that looked like shooting stars, mini white ones that grew in clumps like some strange broccoli, ones with long, thin red petals that looked like feathers. And of course there were little red and yellowish orange lily’s that had black spots on them, the rarest and most beautiful that I’d spend hours hunting for, only to come up with three wilted flowers and scraped knees and elbows from trying to climb the slippery rocks of the creek bank.
This place is really, truly, special. I can’t emphasize enough the wildness of it. Maybe it’s got some kind of special eldritch enchantment that kept drawing me deeper, always revealing, even though I’d been coming there every year for almost my entire life. There was something new around every corner. Even now, especially now, as I am older, I realize how unique that place is because I’ve never been anywhere that’s come close to making me feel the same way. At once curious, enchanted, comforted, even scared.
There was only one occasion where that fear was truly justified, and the strangeness I felt of that place proven to be true.
Based on what I’ve told you, you can guess I liked to explore, to go further than I’d gone before and find something new and novel, even if it felt a tad odd. This... I don’t know what to call it. Encounter? Happened when I was ten, and it all started with those flowers.
You see the best part about exploring was that strange chilling, enchanted feeling I got, but that only ever seemed to happen when I was alone, and we always went camping as a family: me, my mom, my dad, and three older sisters. This meant in most previous trips i had a gaggle of siblings, or at least on to accompany me on adventures. Don’t get me wrong I love my siblings, and playing with them was fun, but i never got to go far on my own because of them.
But that trip, when I was ten, they were all more than thirteen, and reaching the point where they no longer wanted to play in the woods. All they wanted to do was sit in the RV and play on their phones. I still wanted to go down to the creek, or something that wasn’t being cooped up inside so I asked my mom if I could go play by myself.
Of course neither of my parents liked the idea of any of their children going into the woods alone, even if we were the only people for miles I could run into a bear or simply fall off a too-tall rock and injure myself. So I promised them I would stay close by, and said I would just be looking for flowers. I told myself it would be enough to keep me entertained.
But i wanted the red and yellowish-orange flowers with the black spots, or Tiger Lilies I think they were called, and I couldn’t seem to find any of them near me. I was on the opposite side of the creek from my campsite. I’d had to wade through the shallow part of the creek to get across, and now my jeans were wet up to my knees, the heavy denim weighing me down as I trudged alone the creek bank. Suddenly I heard chittering to my left, in the opposite direction of the campground.
I quickly whipped my head around, thinking it was a large insect and preparing to run as those were really the only thing out here that bothered me. But when I looked I saw nothing, for a moment, then I noticed one of the flowers I had been hunting for. I began hopping happily towards it
The air was warm and heavy, humid as the summer sun evaporated water in the plants and creek. Clouds of mosquitoes filled the air, and I had coated myself in bug spray to keep them from biting me. It’s strange wet-dry feeling bothering my skin as it melded with my sweat, burning the little nicks on my skin from tree branches and thistles. It’s pungent alcohol scent invaded my nostrils.
But I was elated as I plucked the flower from the ground, holding it up triumphantly, peeking the sunset sky through the trees, the same color as the flower through the trees. For a moment everything seemed cast in warm shades, red, pink, orange, brown. Everything except the needles of the evergreen trees. I closed my eyes, feeling hot sweat running onto my eyelashes, as those same warm colors appeared behind my eyelids.
When I opened my eyes I could see another Tiger Lily, some fifty feet ahead, and I dashed towards it, adding it to my collection. There was another one ahead still, just at the limit of my vision, and I went for that one too, not thinking about how far I was straying from camp as it became, three, four, five, ten flowers. I’d never found this many before. All of them roughly the same distance apart, still far but closer than i’d ever seen them.
When i finally stopped seeing the flowers the last tinges of pink were beginning to fade from the sky and I was panting but elated. I was next to a large tree with a little cave in it, hollowed out near the roots, maybe with animal help. I crawled inside to count my haul, and catch my breathe, enchanted by this little woodland hut, getting that curious chill up my spine.
From the outside it seemed just barely big enough to fit me. But when I slipped inside I tripped on something, falling further inside than should have been possible. I felt something crawling on my skin. I closed my eyes, yelping and wiping it off, shaking myself a bit. When I opened my eyes everything was dark in the little hole, except for the opening, about four feet away from the bottom. I figured I had underestimated how deep it was, pulling myself up so I could crawl out. When I noticed something.
There was a Tiger Lily, right in front of the opening. I stood, poised to pull myself up, transfixed by this flower for a moment. How could I have missed this one? It was large and vibrant, beautiful. But my eyes stung with sweat, feeling heavier with each passing second. I figured I must’ve missed this one. When I plucked it from the tender earth, I noticed something else strange.
The air outside was suddenly cool and dry, and it hit me in a sudden burst, waking me from a hot summer daze as I pulled myself out of the tree and stood up. As I took inventory of the forest around me it was...wrong. Too quiet, too dry, the trees were, they where white, not without tinges of gray and brown as though they were dirty or scraped. I looked up for their needles, they had none, only long, white slender branches. They looked like hands with too many fingers.
I felt that chill up my spine, I felt the urge to explore that came from somewhere other than my own mind. I wanted to go home, and I shivered, my clothes rustling, no longer wet with sweat or creek water. They seemed to have dried instantly. Even my mouth, my nose, my eyes felt...dry. Like I’d been living in a desert for weeks without a drop of water.
As I shuffled forward it seemed light, a watery gray dawn with no sunrise colors, not even blue. A thick, heavy fog covered everything. I could only see about ten feet ahead of me and there seemed to be dead, white trees everywhere. How they hadn’t fallen down I didn’t know, still don’t.
They reminded me of dog feces that had been left in our backyard for two long, the way it shriveled and became white, and was brittle when you scooped it up to dispose of it. I tried not to think of other similarities. I thought I saw faces in the trees, cold, unforgiving faces that would curse me and my family if i crossed them. So I kept my eyes trained to the finger like branches up high, just barely visible on shorter trees. I had to step over branches and dead bushes that made me stumble more than once.
After a little while I reached a clearing. I didn’t realize how silent it had been until I heard a noise. A strange chittering or clacking you would hear from an insect or beetle, but deeper, much deeper. It reminded me of the sound I heard that lead me to the first flower. I shivered. Yet I felt some numb calming focus overcome me as I followed the treeline, until discovering it made a tightly packed circle around this clearing that must’ve been a hundred yards across.
I heard the chittering again, something that sounded like two sticks tapped together, over and over in rapid succession, but somehow heavier. And I felt eyes on me, more than one pair of eyes. It was like everywhere was watching me.
Suddenly the thick fog dropped, not a gradually thinning. It seemed to sink into the ground and vanish altogether. And I looked around, coming to a horrible realization as I stepped on something hard and long, and it snapped beneath my weight. What I thought had been tree limbs and bare bushes on the ground, were bones.
Right behind me. It didn’t touch me, didn’t move, but I could feel it. It didn’t dare turn around. I stood there for agonizing minutes, trying to convince myself to move. It wasn’t until it trilled in my left ear, revealing a brassy-brown appendage I saw in my periphery that i was finally able to run.k inside of an organism. It looked like all of these creatures has extra bones. Like reverse ostio-perosis. They were cracked in some places, scattered with teeth marks of some kind.
Any semblance of calm fled from my body as I heard the chittering again, this time sounding closer. But I didn’t move, my stupid animal brain thinking if I could just stay still enough, whatever was out there, wouldn’t see me. Wouldn’t do god knows what to me. But I heard it a third time.
Right behind me. It didn’t touch me, didn’t move, but I could feel it. It didn’t dare turn around. I stood there for agonizing minutes, trying to convince myself to move. It wasn’t until it trilled in my left ear, revealing a brassy-brown apenfage I saw in my periphery that i was finally able to run.
I’d never ran that fast and I know I will never do it again. The cold scraped against the insides of my lungs and it hurt so bad I thought I’d breathed in broken glass, but I didn’t stop. I didn’t know where I was going, the only thing I knew was that I would rather run so hard it killed me than let that thing get ahold of me.
But it wasn’t my choice. I tripped on something, stumbling long enough I had to use a tree for balance, and I heard the chittering right behind me again. This time I couldn’t help it, as I turned around and saw the worst thing I couldn’t have imagined if I spent a thousand years trying.
It was almost like a centipede, if those were eight feet tall. It was wide too, brassy-brown segmented shell, long mandibles and too many spindly limbs that were not proportionate at all. It chittered, multiple sets of beedy black eyes staring at me. Yet it didn’t come closer. And that’s when I caught sigh of the larvae.
It’s lower half was almost a chasm, full of the little things, wriggling, squirming. One of them starting coming towards me, and I took a step back, but the bigger creature used one of it’s too-long arms to hold me in place as it climbed up my shoe and up my pant leg. When it reached my waist, it burrowed into my skin and I screamed, and thrashed for minutes as it settled itself beneath a layer of my flesh.
I still had one free hand, and I managed to snap of a bit of the larger creature’s spindly arm. I screamed again, this time to rally my courage as I stabbed it in the eye. It finally released me. I turned and ran once more, barreling through the trees. Within a minute I felt a sharp pain where the creature’s larvae had burrowed into me. If this place hadn’t been so dry I would have been crying, instead I dry sobbed, feeling the shard of bone already sticking two inches out of my abdomen, twice as thick as my thumb.
I don’t know how long I ran, but I remember finding that tree, through sheer luck. I don’t know if it was the same one but it had the same hollow bottom and I shoved myself into it, hiding at the bottom as I heard the creature chittering outside.
I dry sobbed, wrapping my arms around my knees and rocking back and forth, trying not to disturb the bloodied bit of bone protruding from my abdomen. It was six inches long by the time the chattering stopped. I don’t know what possessed me, adrenaline, the knowledge I needed to get help fast, but i looked over the edge, out of the hole.
I was never so relieved to see the familiar forest. It was dark, but it was a full moon, and I heard flies buzzing and saw mosquitoes. The warm summer air I was used to had returned, though I still felt dry. The trees were normal, reddish-brown.
As soon as I was able to stand up I sprinted towards the camp ground, the humid air a blessing on my frayed lungs.
When I got to the camp ground my parents looked frustrated and worried, but once they saw the bone sticking out of me they immediately had my sisters packing the truck and they huddled around me as my dad drove us to the nearest hospital. It looked like a stick to them, now it was dirty, looking more brown and red than white. They assumed I had impaled myself, but could tell how shaken I was.
At the hospital they said it was a stick, but I know what I saw after they removed it, why they had to put me under sedation. They’d showed me the ‘stick’ It had fused to my other bones, but they didn’t know how to explain it so they probably assumed I didn’t know. I don’t know what they made of the larvae, but I know it was real. It felt so real.
As for the air, they’d pronounced me severely dehydrated, one more hour and I could have died. It was a miracle I was able to run as far, and as fast as I did.
I’m so glad I found my way out because I can’t imagine a more painful way to die. I can’t believe all that creature’s victims went through it. I saw how malformed they were, and it must’ve taken them a long time to die that slow, painful death. I shudder now, just thinking about it.
I haven’t gone back to that campground or any since, and I don’t think I will, even if that place is special.

I finally contacted a dentist! Progress. No appointment yet but progress none the less.
But I am hurting pretty bad right now. And I am a little upset because I got a flat tire. Which was scary and not good. But at least happened in front of my own house so I wasnt trapped on the highway.
Today wasnt a bad day but I was really tired. I woke up a little late so I was stressed when I did get out of bed. And the lack of time together was really wearing on James this morning so I stayed behind a little longer to give him some hugs. But I had to go.
I had a pretty good ride in. Even if I was stressed about being late. Not that anyone noticed or cared.
And again they didnt need me as a runner at all and I was just sitting there, salty. And lots of people wanted me to get them art stuff today, which made me feel useful at least.
I headed up there at 9 and started getting things together. I made myself a little list. But I felt a little dizzy. That would happen a few times today. Mostly from the heat and from walking back and forth from the office. I tried to go easy on myself today though. Took breaks. Stopped myself from running all over without a plan. It was good.
CJ was kind enough to bring me more easy cut stamp pads so I have plenty for the kids tomorrow. I cut that up so I had relatively even sizes. I did cleaning. I set up kits for tomorrow. And I started making lists for the next few weeks of projects.
I took a break. I was very tired. I ended up falling asleep for about an hour in my hammock. And it was very needed. My mouth really hurt and I didnt eat my regular breakfast sandwich. I did eat but I think the lack of protein kicked my butt.
When I woke up I went and finally did eat. CJ came and sat with me for a while. And I started perking up.
I spent more time prepping. Cleaning. I started working on samples for a later project based on those worry jars I used to make. I felt bad though because a counselor asked if I wanted to join them on a hike and I had to turn them down. But I took my own little walk to collect interesting rocks and acorns. I also finally got to try some of the wine berries. I saw so many more ripe ones today.
And they might be my new favorite berry. I did a little research on them and it turns out they are an invasive species from Asia. They were introduced to Maryland in the 1890s! They are a cousin of the raspberry. But they are smaller and I want to say, tighter? The ski doesnt have the same squish. And the little pearls are much smaller. The flavor is brighter and sharper.
I had a handful and it was great. And then when Charlotte asked me to cover one of the groups up at the barns me and those kids ended up eating so many more.
Enough that we all kind of felt sick but we couldnt stop. It was very silly. Those kids were fun though. I had fun googling fun facts with them and looking up native nuts. We found some hickory nuts! Very cool.
I took that group on a mini hike back to their home base. We had a fun little walk on a trail I go on a lot and they hadnt been on before. And we found more berries.
But it was soon time for pick up. I had a snack. And sat on the porch. I was a little frustrated that someone apparently had a fever and they were still at camp. And refusing to wear a mask. But I kept mine on and I sent an email with my concerns about how this was handled. I really dont want camp to shut down.
But that whole thing upset me. So I went and finished cleaning and headed out.
I stopped at 711 and got pizza for dinner. Which was a good plan.
Because when I got home our tire got popped. And I had to keep myself calm. Like I am so lucky it didnt happen on the highway. But basically what happened was that I was parking and someone tried to drive around me and scared me and I hit the curb and the tire like tore? It was crazy. Dad said that there must have already been an issue and that shouldnt have happened. But it was pretty shocking.
I asked James to call me. Because I was freaking out. I needed his support.
While I waited for him to be able to call me I just paced the apartment. But once he called I just cried. It was scary and also how was I going to get to work. I hate asking for help. I hate being a burden.
But James helped figuring things out. His sister texted someone at work that lives down town and shes going to come get me in the morning. James is going to take the car to get fixed in the morning. Everything will be okay. It is still really upsetting. But I am so grateful that other people are willing to help.
Now I just have to deal with my teeth. I just noticed that my hurt took has a swollen gum next to it. It hurts a lot to touch that. I googled it and it says it could be an absess. Because of course it is. Thankfully I have those antibiotics from my nose hurting that I never took. So I just took one. And tomorrow I will try to make an appointment with that dentist that emailed me back. Well see. Ugh. I just want to not hurt all the time. Why everything happen so much.
Once most of the tire stuff was dealt with, I did play a little animal crossing. I was able to go and find a new villager today. I had to use like 7 tickets and found some really cute friends. But I landed on Nan the goat. And I am so pleased. They are so cute. I wanted a goat or a sheep so this was awesome. Even though the others I found were cute I think this was the best choice.
I took a bath and tried to just chill. I washed my hair. And i tried to just be chill. Its hard. Why cant I just be chill!! But at least I can have the windows open right now. There is a really beautiful breeze and I am feeling good. I just wish James was here. I hope you all have a great night tonight. And you stay safe. Goodnight everyone.
