summary: while you and luca seek inspiration outside of the kitchen, you finally share a piece of yourself with him.
warnings: fluff, eventual smut, eventual angst not use of y/n, conversations about divorce, second person pov, swearing, danish inaccuracies, very little connection to the world of the bear.

part two | masterlist | part four
It’s been a month or so since Luca’s tasting menu for one, and he’s been nothing but a good thing in your life: a friend, a collaborator, a regular diner who gives fantastic feedback. You’ve become fast friends, and after what he did for you, how could you not? You find yourself spending days off with him at a more frequent pace as of late: enjoying cups of coffee, perusing bookstores, following Luca on bicycle as he shows you the city’s lesser known, yet spectacular bakeries. He gives you a heads up when he can’t make it into the restaurant, but most Saturdays, he continues to make his regular Saturday 7 pm date week after week.
Some days you make him something off-menu – something you’re working on, something you’re recipe testing, a dish you’ve bounced ideas around with him over – and other days he’s eager to try whatever new thing you’ve just added to your menu, insisting for you not to go through the trouble of whipping up anything else. It’s a special relationship – something only food-people can understand – and you’re glad that Luca entered your life.
“Hey, your boyfriend’s here,” Jesper says, interrupting your dinner prep as he grabs your attention.
“My what?” you ask him, with no clue in the world what he’s talking about.
“Luca,” he answers plainly, as you and Mathilde both exchange a look.
“Shut up, Jesper,” you both snap in unison, shooting a glare his way.
You exchange another look with Mathilde, almost as if to say: you good? She nods towards the front of house as if to say: yes, I’ve got this covered.
“Yeah, give me a second and I’ll be right out,” you finally direct towards Jesper, as you put down your knife. You reach a stopping point, wiping your hands on your apron, as you leave behind the Mikkelson twins bickering about what Jesper’s previous comment.
Something about ‘you baby her’ from Jesper and a ‘you’re going to scare her away and this is a good thing, you idiot’ from Mathilde in return. At least that’s what you’re able to make out from your basic Danish language skills (you’re working on it, you swear, and right now you know enough to get by in the kitchen and that’s enough)!
You spot Luca with a package tucked underneath his arm as he leans up against the front door, waiting for you.
“Hi,” you greet him, choosing to ignore the fact that your heart skips a beat as soon as you see him.
“Hey. I was on my way to the post office around the corner. Thought I’d stop in and say hello,” he replies with that ever-charming crooked smile of his.
“No, yeah, I-. I’m glad you did,” you return, unable to hide the smile that spreads across your lips.
You don’t want to make a big deal out of it, especially if this is somehow something you’ve made up entirely in your head, but it seems as if Luca’s found different ways – different excuses – to stop in more and more frequently as of late.
“What’s in the box?” you ask him, curiously, gesturing to the package he holds underneath his arm.
“Remember that American I was telling you about? The one who came to stage?” he asks, looking down for a moment.
“Yeah.”
“His restaurant opening is this week. Wanted to send this off. As a gift.”
“That’s kind of you.”
He blushes, just for a moment.
“Think we’ve lost touch with the art of a handwritten note. A novelty these days,” he says, with a quick raise of both eyebrows.
“Absolutely. I mean… it worked on me,” you chuckle, immediately regretting what’s come out of your mouth.
You’re not sure why you said it and what exactly it is that worked on you you’re referring to, but it’s too late to take it back.
“Yeah, I’ve got him to thank, really,” he chuckles, almost shyly. Taking a bolder approach as he continues with, “For reminding me to walk the walk. For bringing me to you.”
You pause, your heart catching in your throat. In the event of fight, flight, and freeze, it really feels like you’re choosing ‘freeze’ whenever Luca’s been around.
“I bet you’re a really great teacher,” are the words that fall out of your mouth, immediately regretting them for how silly your response sounds.
“So was he,” he parries back.
“Sure,” you nod, still reeling from whatever the hell came out of your mouth a moment ago.
Your disconcerting slip-of-the-tongue seems to leave an uncomfortable silence between the two of you, tip-toeing around each other, unsure of who should make the next move.
“Anyways,” Luca clears his throat, collecting himself. “I ehm, gotta get going. Gotta get back to the restaurant here in a few. It was good seeing you today.”
“You too,” is all you reply, frozen and stuck in your own head.
What the hell is wrong with you? You think to yourself as you watch him go.
“Luca, wait,” you say, pushing through the front door to your restaurant as you chase after him.
He turns back towards you, a kind of ‘did I leave something behind?’ look on his face.
“I can’t stop thinking…” you trail off, taking a breath before you continue your sentence, leaving Luca unsure of what you’ll say next.
“...about that dish you’re stuck on. And about what you said.. about finding inspiration. Being open to… you know, what’s out there.”
“Yeah?” he asks, smiling at the thought of you thinking of him.
“Yeah I… I think I have an idea,” you declare boldly.
And it may be a baby step, but it’s a baby step towards him, towards who knows what, towards whatever’s ahead of you.
-------------------------------
You pitch the idea to Luca –  to explore different mediums of art as a way of seeking out inspiration (and maybe it’s just another excuse to see him too) – and after a few weeks of busy schedules, covering at the restaurant for coworkers-on-holiday, and lining up days off, you and Luca finally make it happen. It’s been over a year now, since the restaurant opened – and almost two since you came to Copenhagen in pursuit of a dream.
“Wait a second. So you haven’t read Rene Redzepi’s A Work In Progress?” Luca asks incredulously looking for confirmation of the obscene tidbit of information you’ve just revealed to him.
“No,” you admit, guiltily stealing a glance his way.
“My god, it’s fascinating! I’ll have to lend you my copy,” he charges forward, solving the problem at hand without question.
“I’d like that,” you smile, almost to yourself as you think about how much you like being around Luca. “And I’d love to hear about your time at noma – what working under him was like.”
“Uh… that’s maybe a different story for a different time,” he deflects with a chuckle, shooting you a look. “Perhaps after a few pints.”
“Heard,” you nod in understanding, turning to him as the two of you find a good place to post up in the park. You and Luca set your lawn chairs down in Kongens Have, or rather The King’s Garden, right behind a row of other lawn chairs set up that face the tent-covered stage.
“It’s good to see you,” you finally say, really taking him in.
“It’s good to see you too. Sorry it’s just working out now,” Luca apologizes emphatically.
“No, it’s okay! We uh… we’re both busy. We both run restaurants. I mean-, I’m surprised we figured it out in time for the show,” you reply, easily letting him off the hook.
“This is pretty cool,” he says, taking in your surroundings. “First time here?”
“Yeah I-, I didn’t make it when I first moved here… and then this time last year I had just opened the restaurant so… yeah first time. You?”
“Yeah, first time,” he echoes with a reassuring nod.
“Really? I just thought-, well, I thought Copenhagen Jazz Fest was like a huge deal here,” you inquire.
He shrugs, responding with, “I reckon you’re a big jazz fan then, eh?”
“Yeah,” you say.
“Have you always been into it or-?” he questions curiously.
“Uh, no. I… my ex,” you hesitate, figuring you should tell Luca sooner rather than later. “... my ex-husband is a music historian so… I got really into it when we first started seeing each other.
He balks, only for a moment, hoping you don’t notice the strong reaction that briefly flashes across his face.
“You were married?” he asks, barely able to hide the surprise in his voice.
“Yeah,” you admit, nervously.
He waits a beat.
“Do you… want to talk about it?” he asks carefully, with an honesty and genuine curiosity in his voice.
“I-I don’t mind. As long as you don’t-,” you stammer, only a little taken aback by the grace he’s shown you.
“Please,” he encourages, listening carefully. “I like learning about you.”
You freeze for a moment, searching for where to begin, and more than anything, in awe of Luca.
“We met right after I moved back home to Boston – right after I finished school,” you begin, watching him carefully for any kind of reaction.
“And it was good. For a long time. But after a few years of being together, his mom got sick and uh… we both decided that we wanted to move to London so that he could help his sisters take care of her. It was just easier… if we got married… with immigration and stuff.”
“But you loved him?”
“Yes,” you answer. “I think… we knew we wanted to stay together… so we took the leap, unafraid of the fact that everything has its expiration date too. Ours just uh, came a little sooner than we expected.”
“What happened?” Luca asks.
You chuckle dryly, racking your brain for the answer to a question you’ve asked yourself a million times.
“Um… moving back home changed a lot, I think. And we met when we were so young that I don’t think by the time we were caring for a sick parent together, we realized we didn’t really even know who we were anymore,” you explain, putting words to a feeling that’s live in your heart for so long – long enough that you’ve barely shared them with anyone else.
“And… I was living in a whole new country without any kind of familiarity. I was homesick, and all of it – it was just really hard on the both of us,” you think through as you speak.
“I think it just made us realize that we had changed… and that maybe we weren’t the same people who fell in love all those years ago.”
“I’m sorry,” Luca apologizes, sending you an empathetic glance.
“It’s okay,” you’re quick to reassure him. “It was tough. Don’t get me wrong. Like… really tough. But nothing… horribly wrong happened. Some people can grow together.” You pause, only for a moment. “We didn’t. We… weren’t those people, I guess. So we grew apart.”
Luca takes a few moments to process what you’ve just told him with a pensive look on his face – and you can’t blame him.
He waits a beat, before returning his gaze to you, a respect for you in his eyes: for your honesty, for your story, for your resilience.
“Are you still in love with him?” he finally asks.
It’s a good question – an interesting one – and even more interesting that he asked in the first place.
“There are parts of me that will always love him,” you share, the vulnerability coming more naturally to you as Luca makes you feel more and more comfortable. “He’ll always be a part of me and… I still keep in touch with his family, you know. They became… my family too.” You pause, knowing that you can say this next part with full conviction:
“But to answer your question, no. I'm not… I’m not in love with him anymore.”
Luca nods slowly, almost as if he’s waiting for you to change your mind – to take it back – to say something that convinces him otherwise. But you don’t, and he’s not sure he’ll be able to help himself from giving in to things he’s been feeling for you.
“I hope you don’t mind that I asked,” Luca finally says.
“No I-,” you begin. “I’m glad you did. It feels nice… having someone ask.”
He smiles, “Like I said. I like learning about you.”
And with that, the two of you settle into your lawn chairs as the performers make their way onto the stage. There’s a shift – within the crowd, between you and Luca – as the musicians take their places, ready to perform. With the first few notes, the tuning of a guitar, a few keys on the piano, you feel yourself relax a little, encompassed by the warmth of the Copenhagen summer night.
It’s almost as if telling Luca, sharing this with him, has lifted a weight off of your shoulders – no longer hanging over your head as you go back and forth of when to tell him, and if you should tell him, and thoughts of ‘why the hell are you worrying about this it’s not like he wants to know’.
Except he did and he does because he wants to know you.
And tonight, because he asked, because he’s proven to be a great listener, and because he looks so damn good doing it, you might just let him.
-------------------------------
a/n: ok how the hell are we feeling now that we know a little more about reader, her past, and why she's been holding back?! i honestly wanted to write a character that felt fresh, and different from me/my make my heart surrender character SO yeah, this where we're at --second chances at love and a story about opening up again -- with more to come.

I’m honour of just finishing Shadow and Bone… (the show not the books I read those a while ago) here are some incorrect Quotes!
Tumblr media
Y/N , to Jesper : I mean, I get complimented all the time-
Kaz: *starts cackling*
Y/N : I do!
Kaz: *laughs harder*
Kaz: You can track Y/N ?
Jesper : Of course I can. If the NSA can do it, so can I.
Y/N : *sneaking in through their window*
Kaz: *turning in their chair and flicking the light one* You want to tell me where you've been all night?
Y/N : I was with Jesper ?
Jesper : *turning in their chair* Wanna try again?
Wylan: Are you sure Y/N’s going to be able to handle that IKEA furniture? They’re not very good with technical stuff…
Jesper : Why are you worried? IKEA was never complicated; these days, it’s even easier! Everything’s color coded, numbered, and there’s even an assembly robot option to make it even easier for Y/N, which we’ve obviously opted in for. All they need to do is press the clearly labeled ON button, scan the QR code on the front of the box, and it’ll take care of the rest. Even a monkey could do it!
*Jesper ’s phone rings*
Y/N: Hey, so I’m at Lowes…
Wylan: …
Wylan: I should have gone with the monkey.
Y/N: I dare you to kiss the next person who walks into this room.
Jesper : Screw that, I’m not kissing any of you.
*Wylan walks in*
Jesper : Fine, I’ll do it. Rules are rules you know.
(Fucking cannon omg)
Y/N: Wylan , we need that!
Wylan , holding Nina over a trash can: Nope.
Y/N: Gimme it—
Wylan : It’s garbage.
Wylan : Murder literally doesn’t hurt anyone!
Nina: What are you talking about? Of course—
Y/N, holding out a hand to shut Nina up: No, no, they have a point—
Y/N: Jesper , I have a great idea.
Jesper : Let’s hear it.
Y/N: We trick Inej and Kaz to go out on a date together.
Jesper : YES!
Jesper : And hey, if that doesn’t work out, maybe you and me could go out, get some drinks—
Y/N, hitting them with a book: THIS IS NOT ABOUT YOU.
Jesper : Why do you look like that?
Kaz , laying face-first on the floor: Like what?
Jesper : Like you’re dead.
Kaz : It’s because I’m dying. Leave me here to perish.
Y/N: Kaz accidentally called Inej “babe” in front of everyone today.
Kaz : *sobs into the floor*
(Also cannon)
Kaz : How is the most beautiful person in the world?
Inej: *blushing* I—
Jesper , butting into the conversation: Y/N is perfect, thanks for asking.
Inej: Wow, they really hate us.
Y/N: Yes, perhaps they’re homophobic.
Inej: But we’re not gay, Y/N.
Y/N: 👀
Inej: 👀
Y/N: We’re not?
Inej: Why are you doing this?
Y/N: Same reason I do everything, Inej. To get somebody to like me.
Y/N: *venting endlessly to Kaz about their week*
Kaz, every once in a while: *in a monotone* Wow, that is so wild.
Y/N: You got a date yet Kaz?
Kaz: No...
Y/N: Well you do now! Get your ass up and hold my hand!
Y/N: When I first got my autism diagnosis, my first thought was “woah… it’s canon” and I think that maybe thoughts like that is why Wylan made me get tested.
(Me omfg)
Y/N: I'm trying to juggle family life and work life but I can't seem to find a balance. What do you suggest I do to keep everyone happy?
Wylan, deadpan: Quit your job, kill your family.

Tuesdays | Jesper Fahey x GN Reader
There were some things big you loved about working for Kaz Brekker, like planning and executing risky heists, stealing jewels, money, or even once you had helped steal a really ugly hat.
And then there were the little things you liked about working for Kaz and with your bestfriends. Like staying up until the sun came up talking with your closest friends after a successful heist, or that one time you and Nina tried to bake together, and the kitchen was a disaster afterward.
All of those are great, but your absolute favorite thing about working for Kaz, was every single Tuesday night he would station you and Jesper to guard the door. Now, Tuesdays were typically uneventful, so you usually spent most of the night sitting side by side with your good friend, who you just so happened to have just about the biggest crush in.
One Tuesday night made everything change between the two of you.
The night was slow, just a few regulars and a handful of pigeons. So as usual for a Tuesday night, the two of you sat side by side infront of the door, chatting away.
"Do you think Kaz hates cats, or is he a cat kind of guy?" Jesper asked laughing.
"Oh, he's totally a secret cat lover." You say, making Jesper agree.
You continued the conversation by trying to guess which of your friends were dog or cat people. After a while, Jesper changed the subject.
"If I liked someone, how should I go about it?" He asked, looking over at you in a burst of confidence. He was definitely glad for how dark it was, so you couldn't see the faint blush on his cheeks.
"You've never had problems liking people before." You said with a teasing smile as you bumped your shoulder against his.
"But this person is different, I want to make sure they know that I really really like them. I would even say I love them. Not just for a fling, but they're someone I could easily see my forever with, and I don't know how to tell them that." Jesper said, now not being able to look at you. He just told you everything he's been wanting to tell you forever and, even though you didn't know that he was talking about you, he was nervous about what you would say.
"I say, you should tell them everything you just told me, Jes. If they don't love you back, then they're crazy, ok?" You said, sad that he loved someone that wasnt you so much, but you wanted to see him happy.
"Ok, yeah." Jesper said, turning to you.
"(Y/N), I love you, and I'm not going to repeat everything I already said because that was nerve wracking enough the first time. But I love you, and I would really love to kiss you right now, if that's okay?" He asked.
"Wait, you were talking about me?" You ask, knowing now that he was, but you wanted the confirmation.
"Yes, but if you don't-"
You cut him off by grabbing his face and kissing him, making him freeze for a moment before kissing back.
"Wow, that was as good as I had dreamed it would be." He said, looking a little dazed, grinning from ear to ear.
"Well, darling, now you don't have to dream about me anymore." You say, pecking him on the lips one more time before getting up as Kaz opened the door.
"We're closing, so you guys can come inside now. Get up Jesper." Kaz demanded, leaving the two of you.
"Come on, the sooner we help finish clean up the sooner we can go to bed." You said grinning at Jesper as you take his hand and help him up.
"You're bed or mine?" He jokes letting you lead him through the doorway and into the club.
"Whichever one you choose, now hurry up and get to work."

Wylan riding a motorcycle in a modern AU got me ✨thinking✨
Tattoo shop parlour. Wylan owns it and opens it across the street from Jesper, who, to many peoples' unsurprise, opened a small shooting range doubled as a gun store (with a limit on certain guns). He wants to own a bakery because he just likes the idea and he likes kitchen work because it keeps him moving, and he likes to shoot but he doesn't want to be associated with it, especially because he lives in a bad part of town (why Wylan opening there was so shocking). Jesper is doing his absolute best to keep the range afloat despite his gambling debt that's been stacking up.
They meet and do not get along. Jesper thinks Wylan is a total bitch and Wylan thinks Jesper is an asshole. After a series of glaring at each other from across the street, Wylan gets a call from his bestie, Nina, asking if he could pick up her friend from his house and bring her to his because her car won't start. Wylan goes and turns out, it's Jesper, surprise surprise. Jesper is drunk as hell and Wylan delivers him to Nina as promised, but not before lecturing his neighbor/stranger about the dangers of being intoxicated and alone. Jesper later gets Wylan's number off Nina and texts a thank you the next morning. Wylan thinks to himself, "Maybe he's okay", and Jesper does the same.
They actually start getting along when Jesper comes over to personally thank Wylan and they get talking because Wylan was closing and Jesper wasn't busy and had an employee to take care of things while he was gone. So they have like a genuine conversation and Jesper rips a flirty comment and Wylan blushes and it's begun from that point forwards.
Anyways. Indulging your Motorcycle Wylan and my Jesper likes Baking head canons. Enjoy bestie 😋😌
Wylan riding a motorcycle is the most perfect au to ever exist, please and thank you
TATTOO AND FLOWER SHOP!!! I love Wylan owning a tattoo parlour because a) he would, just to piss his dad off (cos Van Eck is definitely the kind of guy who believes tattoos lower iq or something) and b) it fits so well with both his rebellious side and also the motorbike?
Jes- Jesper owns a what?
Bestie, I am from Britain. You have no idea how much fear and confusion the words "gun shop" struck into my heart
Jesper's gambling debts, those are IMPORTANT!!! Thank you for including them!!!
Wesper not getting along at the beginning is always *chef's kiss*
Wesper having a mutual friend, love it!
BESTIE
Bestie. What if
What if the "I like your stupid face" is a drunk confession? Like, Jesper's sprawled across the back seat of Wylan's car, drunk out of his mind, having just listened to Wylan's lecture about why you shouldn't drink alone and then
Jesper: Yknow, your face would be a lot prettier if it didn't talk so much
Wylan: What?
Jesper: I like your stupid face. It's your voice that's the problem
Wylan: I'm.... sorry?
Jesper, not really listening: Well, not your voice. What you do with your stupid voice. You shouldn't lecture so much. 'T huuurts
And then he doesn't speak for the rest of the car ride
Bestie, I love this

Y/n worked in a restaurant, made breakfast and tiffins for whoever paid a fair wage. It was the crows' favorite place to eat, they came there to eat and plan. She liked them, they were good business, brought in other dregs. She was too young to be running a business by herself. She had scars running on every visible skin.
Kaz had nothing on her, Inej always lost her in the crowds when she tried to follow her. Jesper flirted with her constantly but her charm had him blushing instead.
It scared kaz that he didn't know anything about her. She was just a girl selling the best waffles (according to Nina). But who was she. That question did cross all their minds every week. She was quick and she was pretty. They all liked her. Maybe too much.
It was Jesper who saw her at the rink, hands in bloody wraps, hair tightly braided back. She saw him too, winked at him and brought her finger to her lips, signaling to not talk.
She was a boxer. Many men beting on her loss. She just stood, with a poker face watching them place their bets and patting her opponent, a guy two times her size who smirked at her, menacingly. Jesper panicked internally, he came to bet on the same fight, tempting odds.
He could not place his bets. He was distracted and scared for her. A sharp whistle rang.
She walked to the center of the ring, hands guarding her face, shifting her weight from foot to foot. The guy scoffed and held his ground at the corner looking bored. The crowd snickered.
He moved swiftly towards her, throwing a hook punch which she bounced. Jesper inhaled sharply, hands grabbing his guns. His brain was still processing what was unfolding before him. He'd seen handle the live kitchen, serving breakfast, but here she was, playing defense.
The guy was growing impatient and let out a snarl which made her smile with amusement. He threw another punch and this time it made contact with her jaw. Her face went sideways as she staggered backwards, the crowd cheered and snickered, the opponent clearly happy.
What happened next was unexpected by everyone, one moment she was staggering looking like she'd fall and the next she swiped her feet at the guy's leg and he yelped back.
She was jumping, shifting nearer and throwing punches at a speed that no one had seen before. Jespers mouth hung open as she landed a strong punch on his ribs. His gaurd dropped, the crowd silent, gaping. Now the fight was hers. He flaid his punches blindly while poorly guarding his face. He got a few weak punches but it seemed like she'd broken one of his ribs. She punched upwards and he made a guttural sound but didn't loose his balance. She was covered in sweat and her jaw was bruised. She hit his nose, this time he fell, but took her with him grabbing her by her hair. She landed on top of him her back on his chest struggling to face him, he sneered and pulled her hair harshly. Her neck bent at a painful angle but she was off him the next second by jabbing his hand.
They all underestimated her ability and strength, she was on top of him, punching his face while he tried to block them. He shoved her off and stood up ready to attack but she punched his neck and he made a choking sound and fell again hitting his head on the pole.
The silent crowd hissed in union. Jesper wanted to cheer but was too shocked to move or do anything really. She was declared winner, her knuckles looked bloody and her hair came loose and sweaty. She was smiling now, holding her hand out for her money and blew kisses to those who bet against her.
Until next time, she announced, bowing to the crowd who were now growing louder. They didn't decide if they were angry or impressed yet. She jumped off the rink and exited the alley before they did.
Jesper ran after her, hoping to get to know something, but lost her trail. Inej showed up next to him.
I hate when you do that Jesper said startled
Please tell me you know where she went, she asked ignoring the remark.
I wish I could he replied and pulled his lips into a straight line. But hey we know she fights.
What?
Oh you didn't see that, he shifted slightly, filled with dread.
I saw you running and followed you till I saw her so I tried to follow her but I've never seen anyone quicker. Inej said peering in the direction she thought she went.
Next day her Restraunt was closed.
And the next.
The crows grew restless, it was a common enough occurance, her not opening it every now and then but now they knew the reason await bothered them. Especially Inej.

TAKING THE LEAP | INEJ GHAFA
Summary: Inej accidentally confesses her feelings to you, who she has a crush on, but flees before getting a response. Maybe the situation can still be fixed.
Tumblr media
Inej Ghafa had always been good in moving gracefully and silently, being The Wraith for Kaz. But the moment she had laid eyes on you the first time, her other side appeared, she turned into a bumbling mess, tripping over her words and blushing at the slightest of glances. Over time, she had became more comfortable with you, but today had been the day she had finally messed up - your frown at her blurting out her feelings by accident made her flee the moment you looked away after a customer called for you.
So here she was, at the roof again, watching a rainstorm rage over Ketterdam. The rain pouring down Ketterdam’s gloomy sky fit her mood like a glove, reflecting the turmoil in her heart as she replayed the embarrassment in her head over and over again. You would never look at her the same, she had ruined the friendship you two had had.
“Oh there you are!” Jesper’s voice snapped Inej out of her thoughts, and she turned her head slightly towards Jesper as the sharpshooter came to stand beside her. “I thought you had melted through the floor.”
Inej sighed, turning her head towards the street again. “I had plans to do that but then I called them off.”
She almost heard Jesper’s frown from how the boy fell silent, and then shifted. “Is it about our lovely barista perhaps?”
Now it was Inej’s turn to frown - she had been sure she had kept a low profile on how much she adored you, and even Jesper wouldn’t notice despite claiming he’s the expert of love.
Then Inej realised that you probably had told him. She sighed, gripping the railing in front of her a little tighter. The metal makeshift roof made a little creak every now and then as rain weighed on it, and the sound only served to amplify her feelings of shame.
“I accidentally told them I like them,” Inej mumbled. “They didn’t answer, they just blinked at me twice.”
Jesper scoffed. “To me it seemed that you said it and in two seconds you already disappeared, you didn’t even give them a chance to reply.”
“What difference would it have made? They will turn me down anyway.” Inej stated and looked down at her hands, interwining her fingers.
Jesper sighed, leaning over the railing himself now. “Unbelieveable.”
“What?”
“You push me and Wylan together, trying to convince us how you had seen how we look at each other but then you don’t see how they look at you.”
Inej pursed her lips. "Even if they do look at me in a certain way, it doesn't mean they feel the same way I do. I don't want to make things awkward between us by asking."
Jesper was serious for once, understanding how Inej needed a friend right now and not a Cupid. It almost felt weird in contrast of his usually bouncy and cheery self. He leaned against the railing, looking at Inej with a small smile. "I get it, Inej. It's scary to put yourself out there, but you'll never know unless you try. You might be surprised by their response."
Inej bit into her lip, thinking Jesper’s words over. It was true she had been wondering it for a while - would you ever have a future together? Then she sighed, pushing herself off the railing. “I’ll talk to them later, when their shift ends.”
Jesper pushed himself off from the railing as well, clapping his hands together. "That's my girl!" He said with excitement, a wide grin spreading across his face. He leaned in closer to her, a smirk on his face as he added, "But I’ll take the credit when you’re together." He winked at her, his grin still wide, and it made Inej smile too.
Maybe today wouldn’t be that bad after all.

Helnik + skinny dipping even though it's much too cold
Modern AU is a good time. PGish despite the prompt + also on ao3.
In hindsight, the phrases “beachside motel” and “October” probably shouldn’t go together in the Midwest, but the combination had been cheap and Nina needed to get out of the city for a weekend and…
Fine, she’s now completely aware why people don’t come up here voluntarily after Labor Day. She may even learn something from this adventure. Maybe.
Like most of her other flawless ideas, this one had been intended as a group outing, but there had been scheduling conflicts and then in turn a reminder that while her friend group is a pretty solid sextet they are also three separate…
“Couples” is also a big word, Nina thinks, considering only one pair out of three is currently functional. At least Jesper and Wylan have their shit together as much as either of them ever will – at least they’ve dealt with all the emotional stuff to a point where Nina’s speculating on how soon the taxes-and-hospital-visitation-rights courthouse wedding will happen. Kaz and Inej will probably stay passive-aggressive and mutual pining until they’re forty, and even that feels like an early guess. As for her own situation…
Everyone else noped out of the idea, but Matthias was willing. Matthias, who grew up somewhere even colder and theoretically knows better. Matthias, who Nina hasn’t quite managed to climb yet.
There is, it becomes apparent, nothing else to do for the weekend. Tourist season ended a bit ago, and they are… not the only guests at the motel, this is not quite the start of a horror movie, but at least the only guests who had to travel more than an hour to get here. Outdoor recreation is questionable; indoor seems limited to a couple dive bars, and Nina has standards, and-
“I have an idea,” she says, sprawled on what she is pretty sure is not a king-sized bed like the reservation site said it would be.
Matthias, currently staring out the window at a parking-lot raccoon battle royale, doesn’t even turn for eye contact. “Going home early?”
“God no, we are not giving up on this trip,” Nina mutters, even though she’s thinking about it. “More like… how do you feel about public nudity?”
That’s enough to make him look at her, and apparently also enough to make him blush. This is why she hasn’t actually tackled him yet, she thinks, this is why she may never get what she wants, this is why-
“That’s a frighteningly open-ended question coming from you.”
“Well. We are near a beach. And we are, I’m starting to suspect, the only people theoretically staying the night here who haven’t wandered across the street to the Possum Lounge. And I was thinking…”
“You want to freeze off a limb?”
“It’s early October, dumbass. Don’t people do polar-bear plunges? Is that actually a thing in real life or-“
“It’s a thing.” He’s almost smiling, always a good sign when she’s trying to talk him into something. “Got forced to do it with the hockey team once. Once was enough.”
“And those are in, like, winter. This is still fall and-“
“And you really want to strip and run into the water and there is no way I can actually talk you out of it,” he finishes. Damn. Those occasional moments of perceptiveness are a fun break from the himbo default, no offense, Nina adores all baselines and-
“Exactly. And I would have more fun if you do it too, and I promise I won’t stare at your dick.”
Something in that statement must’ve come out unconvincing, and she can’t quite place the look in his eyes but it damn sure isn’t trusting and-
“Alright.” Resignation, more than anything else she could try to pin down. Still counts for enough.
They find their way outside in near-silence, no formality beyond making sure room keys are in jacket pockets. It’s cool but not cold, and again Nina wants to point out that some people run marathons in this kind of weather (and some people have really questionable priorities), and-
“Can I say I expected something even wilder from you?”
“Is that supposed to be a compliment or-“
“You’re always so…”
With anyone else, she’d be able to finish that sentence. Too Much, and all its variations, too loud and too vibrant and too impulsive and… she’s noticed how far she’s dragged Matthias out of his comfort zone over the few years they’ve known each other, but he hasn’t seemed to mind. Perfectly willing participant in her schemes at the moments it’s mattered, perfectly-
“Maybe I want a little quiet too,” she murmurs. “Can’t be all the things all the time.”
She decides that’s enough explanation and starts stripping, her clothes piled on top of the towel she grabbed because she did at least think some of this through, facing away from her counterpart because she’s trying to make this less awkward and god it’s completely awkward and-
She turns her head at the right moment to catch him looking at her with pure adoration, and something in her heart just breaks. Sweet boy isn’t going to know what hit him when she-
“Are we doing this?”
Nina closes her eyes and runs forward, laughing despite how damn cold the water is – and yes, this was objectively not one of her better ideas – stopping when she’s in up to her waist and opening her eyes to see him right there next to her, overwhelmed and in awe and-
“Can I kiss you?” She normally wouldn’t ask, but-
He nods, and she tries to jump into his arms and kinda misses and next thing she knows she’s much more in the water than she wants to be and so is he and it’s just… the sweetest thing that’s happened to her in a long time, the kind of thing that makes her think maybe she’s just a little bit of a romantic, and-
She’s not sure who kisses who, but it’s soft and hesitant and unlike her and even better for it. A start of something, this ridiculous romcom moment, and maybe-
“That okay?” she asks when they break, still clinging, still-
“Do that again when we’re not…”
“Yes. Please.”

the lovers- kaz brekker x reader
a/n: this was requested by anon!
request something here
Kaz didn’t like to showcase his vulnerabilities.
It’s why he wore gloves- anything that could be interpreted as a possible weakness, he twisted into the image that he had created for himself, incorporated it into the legend that surrounded him.
You really weren’t that different.
Yes, he cared for you, more than he cared for most people, but there was nothing sacred to Kaz Brekker.
To the Barrel, you were just the Archer, just another spider that Dirtyhands had on his payroll, though your specialty was arrows rather than knives.
And you were fine with that- even within the Dregs, only a few knew of your relationship with Kaz.
If any of the others suspected, you would have genuinely been surprised.
Public displays of affection never occurred and even in private, the farthest you had gone was holding hands with him, not that you minded.
You would move at whatever speed was comfortable for him and not anything more.
Cue you and Kaz at some all too extravagant party, guarding the hallway that led to the Merchant’s office, the office which Jesper and Inej were currently in, stealing information from the Merchant’s ledgers.
You were wearing some all too tight dress while Kaz had been outfitted in a suit, his hair slicked back.
Although he looked nice, you still wanted nothing more than to run your hands through his hair and undo all the hard work that Nina had done.
You peeked around the corner before drawing back quickly, pulling Kaz into one of the enclaves of a doorway.
“Guards,” You told him and he glanced at his watch as you heard footsteps at the beginning of the hallway.
“They need more time,” He said, more to himself than anyone else.
“Kaz,” You said under your breath, growing increasingly aware of one of the guards approaching the small enclave.
“I know,” He said, almost annoyed, before taking a deep breath.
“What are you-”
Before you could finish your sentence, Kaz cut you off by pushing you against the wall and kissing you.
You stood there in shock, completely unresponsive before you realized what he was doing and played into it.
You barely even realized when the guard found the two of you, the sound of your heart hammering in your chest and the blood rushing in your ears distracting you from anything else.
The guard grunted and Kaz pulled away from you, looking at the ground.
“You shouldn’t be back here,” The guard said sheepishly and you tried your best to look flustered, though you didn’t have to do much acting.
“I’m- I’m so sorry, sir. Me and my boyfriend, we just wanted to find a… private spot, I’m sure you understand.”
He looked between the two of you, a blush appearing on the guard's face.
“R-right, I understand miss, but you can’t be back here.  I’ll escort the two of you back to the party.”
“Thank you so much, sir. I promise that it won’t happen again,” You said sincerely and the guard nodded, a sheepish smile on his face.
“Have a good night now,” He said after leading the two of you back to the main party.
You and Kaz made your way outside of the party, trying to find some privacy.
“You-”
“I did what I had to do to keep us safe,” He said, though you could tell from his voice that that wasn’t the whole story.
You crossed your arms over your chest, trying to keep your bare arms warm in the cool Ketterdam night.
“You’re going to catch a cold,” Kaz said sullenly, sliding out of his jacket and offering it to you.
You grabbed it from him hesitantly and put it on, reveling in the warmth that it provided.
“That was some quick thinking on your part.”
Kaz didn’t say anything for a couple of moments, flexing his gloved fingers over the top of his cane.
“Yes, well, it wasn’t a difficult choice to make. We did what we had to do in order to keep Inej and Jesper safe.”
You remembered the way his lips crashed into you, the way he had pushed you against the wall.
Your face warmed.
“What wasn’t a difficult choice?” Inej asked, appearing out of nowhere and causing you to jump. Her eyes narrowed as you jumped- usually, you were able to spot Inej before anyone else, but you weren’t exactly paying attention to your surroundings at the moment. Before she could question you, Kaz spoke.
“Do you have a copy of the ledger or not?”
“Of course. We’re not amateurs, you know,” Jesper said, holding out the journal to Kaz, who didn’t say anything else.
He looked at you, almost as if he expected to be looking at thin air before his gaze softened almost imperceptibly.
“You two go on without us. We’ll meet you back at the Slat.”
As if she had never been there at all, Inej simply vanished back into the darkness. Jesper groaned slightly but didn’t object, walking back towards the direction of the Slat.
You and Kaz walked slowly throughout the streets of Ketterdam, as if you were an old married couple strolling through a garden as opposed to whatever the two of you were strolling through an unforgiving city.
“Thought you would’ve disappeared the first chance you got after Inej and Jesper showed up,” He said nonchalantly, his voice even.
“I’m not doing much of anything in this dress, much less jumping from roof to roof,” You said pointedly, though your tone was easygoing.
“What happened earlier-”
“We don’t have to talk about it. If you want, what happened there can stay there,” You said, cutting him off.
“It wasn’t pleasant,” Kaz said shortly. “But it wasn’t horrible either.”
You stopped where you were walking, looking at him.
“I think that’s the nicest thing you’ve ever said to me.”
“Oh, hush,” He said, the slightest hint of a smile on his face.
“Careful, Brekker, you’re getting awfully close to looking like a human being.”
“What can I say? You’re a bad influence.”
You laughed and a small smile tugged at Kaz’s lips.
Maybe he should just drop the whole revenge thing, just try and make you laugh for the rest of your life’s. He thinks that maybe he can be happy with that.
You lead him to a restaurant, where someone was strumming a guitar, playing an unfamiliar, folksy tune.
In the streetlight, your face lit up and you outstretched a hand towards him.
“You owe me a dance from earlier.”
He pulled a face.
“I owe you no such thing.”
“If Jesper was here, he would dance with me,” You said to him and he frowned.
“Yes, well, good thing he isn’t here then. I won’t have to break his legs this way.”
You rolled your eyes.
“What do you have to lose, Kaz? Just this one dance. One dance and then we can go back to being all boring.”
“I was joking before, but you are an actual bad influence,” He grumbled, taking your hand.
The smile that appeared on your face almost made it all worth it.
What the two of you did was hardly dancing- it was more him standing and letting you guide him and letting him twirl you than anything rhythmic, but it made you happy and that was all that really mattered to Kaz.
Whatever he could do to make you smile like that, even if it meant embarrassment in front of drunk restaurant patrons, he supposed it was worth it.
After an appropriate amount of time passed, the two of you continued walking and you held onto his hand a little tighter than before.
“Happy now?” He asked and you smiled.
“It wasn’t pleasant, but it wasn’t horrible either,” You quoted and he shook his head, trying to get rid of the smile that was on his face.
“The kiss wasn’t bad. I wouldn’t be objected to trying again sometime.”
“Neither was the dancing,” You chided, though you were grinning. He rolled his eyes.
“You’re pushing your luck, Archer.”
You shrugged.
“Would you really have me any other way?” You asked, walking ahead of him.
You didn’t see him shake his head or the small smile that appeared on his face as he watched you.
“No,” He said quietly. “I wouldn’t.”

i worry about you - kaz brekker
request: ok what about kaz sending inej to check up on his s/o every night and then his s/o catches inej one day and confronts kaz about it and he basically admits he gets worried about them and needs to know they’re okay before he lets himself fall asleep
a/n: this was kind of cute and very in character for kaz so i love it <3
warnings: none i think
at first you hadn’t noticed it. you hadn’t really picked up on the fact that every other night inej would walk you to your room at the slat or that she would knock on your door for something random like, ‘oh what time are we getting up tomorrow morning’. inej’s sudden interest in your nightly routine and nightly where abouts hadn’t made you suspicious, the two of you were good friends after all.
but then, on the nights that inej didn’t stop by your room, you felt like you were being watched. you would pace around your room, open and close the door after checking if someone was standing outside, and you’d make sure the blinds of your windows where closed every night.
then one night, you caught her. maybe she was being clumsy that night or maybe you had been so paranoid recently that you were able to notice the Wraith’s movements.
“inej come out of the shadows please” you had sternly said, your arms firmly crossed across your chest.
you heard a small sigh and then suddenly inej materialized from the shadows. she wore a sheepish grin like a child who was caught taking candy after dinner.
“hey y/n what are you doing here” she lightly joked.
you almost let yourself smile, this girl. but you kept your fake stern face on, “inej, what are you doing in my room? it’s almost midnight and i saw you like an hour ago.”
she let out another sigh. she thought for a moment. and the spoke, “look i was just checking in on you. you seemed sort of down at dinner and i wanted to make sure everything was okay, honestly.”
you had let yourself smile at her then. it was so sweet that she had noticed.
really, you had been bummed out all night because kaz seemed to be in and even worse mood than usual and his moods always affected yours.
“i’m okay inej, just an odd night. i appreciate the fact that you checked in, but for future reference, i’m perfectly okay if you decide to use my door like a normal person”
she grinned while walking backwards to your window, “you know that’s not my style y/n.” and then she flipped out the window like the spider she was.
but that wasn’t inej’s last visit. and she didn’t use the door like you’d told her too. now that you knew to look out for her, it was easier to notice when she slipped into your room and then slipped out.
she’d stay for a couple of seconds and then leave. in and out like a ghost, leaving no trail of her being there. but now that you’d seen her you couldn’t un see her. and this wasn’t some friendly check in, you weren’t sad or in a bad mood every night. and she came into your room every night.
after about two weeks of this weird unexplainable routine of inej’s, you decided to say something.
you were sitting on your bed reading when you let out an exasperated sigh and closed the book. you blew some hair away from your face before saying, “saints inej please come out.”
you got deja vu as she walked out of the darkness. “you heard me again?” she said to you, her eyebrows furrowed in confusion.
you shook your head, “i’ve been able to tell every time you’re in here since the last time i caught you. don’t forget you’re not the only spy here Wraith.”
she stayed silent, her lips pressed into a thin line.
“tell me why you’re here. why you sneak into my room every night” you said.
she took a seat on your bed next to you. “i’m checking in on you” is all she gave you.
you threw your hands up in frustration, “why inej. you know i’m fine why do you feel the need to check in all of a sudden. are you okay?”
she laughed at your concern, leaning her head on your shoulder. “im checking in because kaz told me to check in on you.”
you pushed her off of you in shock, “kaz brekker? the kaz that we’re both friends with ? both work with?”
she nodded her head, “the one and only.”
you shook your head in disbelief, “why would kaz ask you to do that?”
she shrugged and pushed herself off the bed, shuffling towards the window. “i’m not sure. he told me to do is a few months ago and-”
“months?!” you interject.
“-and he takes it very seriously. i always have to go upstairs and tell him everything is okay.”
you were confused to say the least, you didn’t understand why kaz would ask inej to check on you every night. so you stayed silent. inej took that as her cue to leave, slipping out the window the same way she had weeks before.
you waited a few minutes. you mulled over your thoughts and memories, looking for any reason that kaz might need to know your location at night. had you done something wrong ? did he suspect you were betraying him? you felt a little hurt at the thought. you and kaz were close, closer than he was with the rest of the crows. he should know that you would never leave the dregs, they had saved your life. kaz had saved your life.
you shook your head and walked out of your room. why not just ask? it couldn’t hurt right? kaz may never give a straight answer in his life but maybe he would tell inej to back off.
by the time you made it to his door you were slightly angry, possibly annoyed. what right did kaz have to spy on you using one of your own friends. was there no such thing as privacy ?
you knocked on the door and waited for kaz’s ‘come in’ to step into his room/office.
he was sitting at his desk, hunched over a couple of accounting books from the crow club. you knew him well enough to know he was double checking every transaction to make sure there were no mistakes.
he looked up and pushed the papers away from him when he realized it was you. “oh y/n, it’s you.”
you huffed and walked over to him, standing in front of his desk. “yeah it’s me. i need to talk to you about something.”
he leaned back in his chair, motioning with his arms for you to go on.
you took a deep breath, “why have you asked inej to check on me every night?”
his eyes went wide slightly, and he sat up straight in his chair. all of his relaxed energy gone.
you went on, “because frankly it’s disrespectful. i don’t do anything that would make you suspicious of me. you know i would never leave or betray the dregs. so why do you ask my friend of all people to check on my location at night time kaz this is an invasion of my space and i can’t-”
“that is not why inej checks in on you” he interrupts.
you placed your hands on your hips. “okay so tell me brekker, why do you need inej to check in on me?”
he ran a hand through his hair. it kind of seemed like he was having an internal battle with himself.
“because i worry about you.”
you narrowed your eyes at him, your eyebrows creasing in confusion. “what?”
he was staring at his gloved hands, anywhere but you. “i worry about you. i want to make sure you get home okay or that you’re relaxed. i don’t make her check because i think you’re out working with another gang. i ask her to check to make sure you’re safe. especially if you came back from a job.”
you stayed silent for a minute. you had come in here ready for a fight, not this. you were prepared to fight or endure kaz’s passive aggressive energy for a couple of hours, you most definitely hadn’t prepared yourself for his honesty.
“but why would you want to know i was safe?”
he chucked darkly. “it’s not that i want to. i need to. unless i know you’re okay i can’t sleep. i’ll stay up for hours overthinking your job and how i wasn’t sure if i had seen you at dinner or playing cards with jesper. and then my mind wanders into all of the things that could have happened to you or could be happening to you. so inej tells me when you’re in your room safe and not in pain and only then can i fall asleep.”
neither of you said a word. you fidgeted with your fingers as a distraction. you were in shock. you were flattered. the blush on your cheeks far too hot. you were feeling so much.
but mostly you felt loved and cherished by kaz.
so you said, “sometimes when you’re in a mood. i get in a mood. it’ll ruin my whole night because i know for the rest of my day i’ll worry about you. and whether you’re feeling better or not. thinking about what made you pissed in the first place. thinking about all of the people who could make you happy in that moment.”
he deserved your vulnerability back.
when it became clear that kaz wasn’t going to say anything, you made your way to his door.
“wait”
you paused at the door
“i’ll tell inej to back off”
you turned towards him and he was finally looking at you.
you smiled at him, “thank you kaz.” you paused for a moment. “maybe tomorrow night, and the night after that, and the night after that, i’ll come in here and say good night? right after my jobs and when i’m heading to bed. would that be okay?”
if he needed the reassurance that you were okay to sleep, then you would happily climb two flights of stairs to give him that peace of mind.
plus you couldn’t deny the excitement you felt at the prospect of saying good night to kaz.
kaz had a small grin on his face too. “yeah,” he whispered, “that would be fine.”
you opened the door and before you lost your courage you said, “and kaz. you can always come down to my room to say goodnight. i like knowing you’re safe too.”
you stepped through the door and closed it behind you.
“good night brekker” you called out behind you.

What If I Don't Want You To?
Tumblr media
main masterlist
REQUESTED: "Hii! I saw that you wanted people to leave kaz requests in your asks so here I am! Could you do a ff in wich the reader is a part of the crows and she's really sarcastic and flirty (similar to jesper) and she constantly flirts with kaz, (he acts like it doesn't affect him but he secretly loves it) and one day she does something especially bold that makes him blush madly and they finally admit their feelings for each other (also a lot of teasing of the crows to kaz pls) thank you so much!"
SUMMARY: reader loves to tease kaz but is scared once she realizes she might have gone too far.
WARNINGS: a mention of blood but nothing graphic
WORD COUNT: 1422
Tumblr media
Kaz was the most closed-off person you knew. He never revealed anything, wether it was his feelings or the details of a new plan, and it enraged you. That's why you took it upon yourself to see just how far you could push him.
Flirting with Kaz Brekker wasn't an easy task, nor was it rewarding but it sure was fun. The crows loved to see which new technique you would have used and what effect it would have had on Kaz. It was usually a simple glare; a snarky comment when you were lucky. Bets were made on his reactions and you soon became a part of it.
"What are we thinking today, Y/n?" started Jesper while walking you down to the club, "I'm betting on a smirk."
"A smirk?!" you asked surprised, "I'm not even sure Kaz can smile..."
"He can, i've seen him once. I thought i was dreaming but when i pointed it out, he glared at me. I knew it was real when he whacked me with his cane." stated Jesper, shivering at the memory. You couldn't help but laugh at his theatrics. "Why do you do it, by the way?"
You took a moment to answer, suddenly serious again.
Truth was that all the innocent flirty comments you made −comments that started out as nothing more than a pastime− soon changed something in you. They were becoming truthful, and seeing Kaz answer with nothing but a dismissive comment was not easy. Trying to evoke feelings in him, inadvertently awoke feelings in you. Feelings for your boss that you shouldn't have had.
"Do i need a reason? It's fun, why do you talk to yourself in the mirror when you think no one's watching?" you retorted, raising eyebrows in genuine question.
"First of all, you shouldn't have seen that. Second of all, you should try it, you'd feel much better afterwards." he said simply and you tried restraining the smile that inevitably made its way on your face.
You entered the club which was, as always, in full swing. Several people were already ordering at the bar all kinds of alcohol while many others were betting all their possessions at the tables. Only the dregs knew that the real bets were being placed under the tables.
"Ten that he doesn't say anything." you heard someone whispering.
You were the newest of the dregs and of the crows, but you had already earned yourself a reputation.
"Twenty that he finally kicks her out." another voice from somewhere in the club.
That one made you shiver. Would he really reach a point where he would fire you? You were a useful member, you wouldn't have made it into the crows if you weren't, but were you too much? Would he eventually get tired of you?
You walked over to your usual table with Jesper to meet Inej. Kaz wasn't there yet and you were really thinking of ending it there, no more flirting, no more jokes. This was your job, nothing else.
"What do you have for us, boss?" asked Jesper as he saw Kaz approaching.
He looked as he always does: black refined clothes clinging to him in an assortment of sharp edges, making him look even more direful to new merchants. He looked dashing the way a raging sea at night is; frightening, yet enticing. And that was wrong, you reminded yourself.
"It was a dead end." he said, sitting down.
He was in a gloomy mood, certainly for the news, and even though you knew you would have let down the whole club, you couldn't help but think of the comment you had heard moments ago.
"Twenty that he finally kicks her out."
You loved working and simply being with the crows and the possibility of being kicked out was positively frightening.
But you couldn't simply stop. Everyone would have noticed something was off, he would have noticed. And then what? He would have known you liked him.
You had to do something big, something he couldn't simply ignore. You might have been out of the dregs for good, or maybe not.
Jesper kicked your shin under the table, making you focus back on the real word and motioning at all the dregs in the club, looking expectantly at you.
Kaz and Inej were now talking about something you weren't quite getting, their voices seemed distant as you tried to forget about everyone's eyes on you. You had made it a thousand times already, you could do it once more.
"So, what are we going to do now?" asked Jesper and Kaz leaned back in his chair.
"I have some other leads we can try, but we'll have to split up." he started, the prospect of new kruge in his pockets making him incredibly more cheerful, "Jesper, Inej heard something about a particularly pricey painting in east stave, she'll bring you there and you'll learn more about it. And Y/n," he began and you perked up.
It was your moment to say something and get it over with.
"We'll go to west stave, i need your help with a lead there."
"Oh, you need me?" you said, your tone excessively teasing.
"That's what i said, but i can ask Inej." he replied drily.
You hesitated but you were not one to back down, especially not in front of one of Kaz's passive aggressive comments.
"But then you wouldn't get to stare at me longingly while i work, would you?" you said, pouting slightly.
You could have expected a retort, a glare, a not-so-nice hand gesture, but not him storming out of the club.
The entirety of the dregs was dumbfounded, Jesper and Inej, who never participated in the bets but still knew about them, were agape. You were mortified.
"Maybe," began Inej, "You should go talk to him."
"And meet my demise?" you asked.
"There must be a reason why he stormed out-"
"Yes, that he would have liked to kill me but blood stains are tough to remove." Jesper laughed but you were quite serious.
You got up either way, you had to explain yourself to him, you owed him at least that, and got out.
You found him not so far from the club's entrance, leaning on the railing over the river. You approached him unsurely.
"Kaz." he didn't turn around, so you got closer to the railing and noticed that his face, even in the night with the palest light of the street lamps, was scarlet. "I'm- i'm sorry, i will stop."
He remained silent.
"That is if you still want me in the crows, if not i'll leave tonight obviously." he turned to you, usually-perfect hair now slightly tousled, face still red and unreadable.
"Why wouldn't i?" he asked.
"I'm always teasing you and i figured you hated that. I will stop."
"What if i don't want you to?" your head perked up and he turned back towards the horizon, but a smirk crept up on his face. He didn't bother hiding it.
"So you can smile?" he rolled his eyes.
"I don't like it when people point out things i obviously do, you should have noticed back there."
Heat rushed to your face and the smile he had plastered onto his face turned into a complacent one.
"It was real? You stare at me longingly?" you asked bewildered.
He looked at you once before turning to the horizon once more, "Obviously not."
But you could sense he was lying.
"Told you he could smile, Y/n!" shouted Jesper from behind you.
You both turned around to find Jesper and Inej surrounded by the dregs and a couple of other clients too, all jostling to get a better look of the scene.
"It'll be hard for him not to, i'm afraid." joined in Inej and you bit your lip to refrain the laughter. Kaz's annoyed expression didn't help you maintaining a straight face.
"I'm not paying you to stand here doing nothing, get back inside." he ordered.
Everyone turned back inside but Jesper and Inej.
"Boss, if Y/n now gets double, just know i'm great at flirting too." stated Jesper as Kaz made his way back to the club, you in tow.
He ignored him and whacked him with his cane. Again. Jesper had now yet another lovely cane story to add to his collection.
"You'll never let him forget it, won't you?" you whispered. Jesper looked at you like a child who had just entered candy land.
"Never."

"I love you." you said. Your voice was barely over a whisper, further muffled by the heavy rain, but Kaz heard you, anyway. He was Dirtyhands, after all. The Bastard of the Barrel. Nothing escaped him.
Not the way Matthias used to gaze longingly at Nina, not the way Jesper's hand shook slightly when he got too drunk for his own good, and definitely not the small shows of affection you'd been showering him with lately - the way he'd duck his head after opening a note you sent him served as evidence. Like you said, nothing escaped him.
Nothing but how you genuinely loved him, for some reason.
You'd been hinting at your love for a while, now, ever since that night, nearly a year ago. When he had laid a (gloved) hand over yours. It hadn't been anything extreme, like a flash mob love confession, but to you, it had been everything. Because it had changed everything.
You were basically a couple, now, though the two of you never actually labelled it as such. The implications were there, though. You would stand closer to him than others would deem 'safe'. You would pass him slips of paper with hearts or smiley faces written on them, and he would cough, as if doing that would stop his rising blush. Kaz would ask for your insight on plans, listen to your ideas, even when they contradicted his, or tell you to take a 'mental health' day and take care of yourself. He'd even smile at you occasionally, during the intimate moments you shared.
You loved him. He loved you. It was just that neither of you had the guts to say it aloud - until now.
You were beginning to regret your decision already.
Kaz flinched. Flinched. For the first time in your life, you saw Kaz Brekker flinch, recoiling like a wounded animal. That's when you knew you had fucked up. For real, this time. He shook his head, and met your worried gaze.
"You can't just say that, Y/n." he snapped.
"It's true, though," you said, a hint of desperation creeping into your voice. "We both know it - you can't tell me all of that didn't mean anything. I- Kaz, I love y-,"
"No." he said. "No, you don't, y/- you don't. You can't."
He couldn't even bring himself to say your name, you thought bitterly. The corners of your eyes burned with tears, but you wouldn't let them fall. "Why not?"
Kaz inhaled sharply. "Just because."
"Because what?" you scoffed. "You can't just do all the things you did and say this. I get if you can't say it back right now - or ever - but you can't just deny that everything we did meant... nothing."  You were borderline begging at this point. Just about ready to drop down onto your knees and plead for him to just talk to you, because it didn't make sense. All the smiles he'd returned, and all those small displays of affection... everything you'd been through together. Side by side.
You were beginning to realise that the 'togetherness' you'd experienced had only been on your end.
"Well, what if they did mean nothing?"
You shook your head vehemently. "No, they had to mean someth-,"
"No, they didn't, Y/n." he spat venomously. "They didn't mean a single thing, and neither do us. Neither do you. I can't allow it. Not if you're going to stride into my life and say that."
"What do you mean? Say what? Say the truth?" you demanded.
"You can't just tell me you love me when you know it isn't true, and you know you're going to leave one day, goddamnit!" he yelled, slamming his cane onto the ground. "You're selfish. That's what you are. You're selfish, and I don't want to see you passing your little notes to me ever again."
His words echoed in your mind. Was Kaz still shouting at you? You had no idea. Your gaze remained fixated on your shoes, and you watched raindrops slide off of them, torn between bursting into tears and marching right up to the coward in front of you to curse him out.
Instead of doing either of those things, you jutted out your chin. The two of you made eye contact. You had a feeling it'd be the last time you'd even look at each other. Desperately, you searched for some sort of emotion in his coffee brown eyes.
All you saw was indifference.
Knowing that he felt nothing for you was worse than him hating you. He probably wouldn't even think of you after this. You'd part ways, your relationship (not that it actually had been a relationship) left on bad terms, you with a broken heart, and him with… him with everything he'd had before, minus a selfish burden who he had never really loved in the first place.
"I really do pity the next person who loves you, Kaz," you said. "And when they come, at least try not to fuck them over like you're doing with me."
You laughed hollowly. "I wonder what your reason for all this was."
He didn't respond. He stood as still as a statue, closing his eyes. You hoped it was to hide the hurt in them.
"You're a coward, Brekker." With that, you turned sharply on your heel, and walked off into the night. Come after me, you screamed in your mind. But he didn't. Of course he didn't.
· · ─── ·𖥸· ─── · ·
Kaz's pov
You walked away. He let you.
You're a coward, Brekker.
"I know," he whispered. "I'm sorry."
I love you too, he thought.

about time - j. fahey
pairing: jesper fahey x reader.
request: hi!! Can you do something with jesper and reader always being platonically affectionate and him one day realizing that he loves them while they've known for a while and have been waiting for him to notice? sorry if it's too specific!! thanks.
genre/warning: fluff!
words: 1.3k
summary: who would have known stealing a necklace together would be what finally drove jesper to confess his love?
Though he hadn’t ever really given much thought to the nature of your relationship, Jesper always knew one thing and one thing only: he loved you. What he didn't know, however, was that he was so obvious about it that every single one of his friends except for you had realize. Sure, he knew that he was a bit more touchy than what people considered normal, and he knew you joked around in a way that could be interpreted as more than just friendship, but he told himself they'd think that was just his personality.
He had always thought the didn't notice how his eyes would search for you in a crowd before they searched for everything else, how his breath would get caught up in his throat whenever you kissed his cheek or hugged him, or how the only person able to keep him still when he was feeling a restless rush of energy and wanted to pace when he couldn’t. Because, after all, you were just friends and everyone could see that… right?
“How did last night go? Won any life changing bets?” he heard your voice before he saw you, and a soft smile immediately broke out on his face, earning him a knowing look from Nina.
“Unfortunately not, angel. Your castle will have to wait.” he answered as he heard the creaking of the stairs you were coming down from muffle your laugh. It was an inside joke you two had, he once got drunk and told you that if he ever won big on a gambling night, he would use the money to build you a castle with rooms for all the crows.
“Next time.” you encouraged while sneaking up behind him and kissing his left cheek. He felt your lips on his cheek and his mind immediately started to race again with the same thoughts it had been before you’d come down the stairs. He started imagining you kissing his cheek in bed as soon as you woke up and the sun was shining on his face and … jesus christ, was he blushing? get it together, he thought. “Can you go out in town with me today? I saw a necklace on the way here last night after the job and I wanna see if it’s still there to buy it.” you asked, successfully breaking him out of his thoughts.
“You are going to buy a necklace?” Matthias asked, a surprised emphasis on ‘buy’, to which you responded with a fake offended gasp.
“You wound me.” you deadpanned, earning an eye roll from the Fjerdan. “So, will you come?” you asked Jesper again.
“Yeah, can’t let the city go too long without seeing this face.” he answered your question, gesturing to his face with a wave of his hand.
“They’d start to miss it.” you confirmed with a nod and a wink before going back up to your room to get ready for the day, leaving him with a stupid grin playing at his lips.
“And then Nina made me swear not to tell anyone.” you finished telling him the story as Jesper and you walked the streets of Ketterdam, you were making big gestures with your hands as you talked and he was watching you with a soft smile on his face.
“You’re telling me, though.” he said, looking at you with an amused look.
“You don’t count.” you shrugged, bumping your shoulders together as you continued walking. “Ok, I'll distract the rich owner’s daughter who works at the front desk and you’ll snatch the necklace. Got it?” you asked as you reached the shop that you’d seen the necklace in.
“Why are you distracting the daughter?” he questioned, and you couldn’t tell if the offended look on his face was real or not.
“Because I'm more charming than you.” you patted his cheek and started to walk into the store.
“Rude!” he called after you, waiting outside until you’d distracted the girl working at the front.
He saw as you leaned against the counter with a smirk on your face, touching the girl’s hands and complimenting her jewelry, your voice seductive and your words smooth. He saw the girl’s cheeks turn pink and completely understood the feeling - he’d blushed thanks to you just hours prior to now.
Stealing the piece of jewelry was easy and you were both skipping down the street while laughing in no time, he’d even managed to steal a few rings for himself and some earrings he thought would look great on Nina because they ‘matched her eyes’. You had your arm hooked around his while you walked while leaning your head against his shoulder, when he looked at you he felt all his insides melt and he knew that If anyone could see the look he was giving you, he’d never hear the end of it.
“Can you help me put it on?” you asked, once you’d already reached the Slat and gone up to your room to relax before it started to get crowded downstairs and you couldn’t catch a moment of silence.
“Of course.” he answered, taking the necklace from your outstretched hand and asking you to hold your hair up. He hooked it around your neck and he swears he saw goosebumps erupt on your skin as the tips of his fingers brushed against it. He didn’t know if he was imagining it, but what he did know was that it was the first all day in which he’d felt like he had the upper hand in your dynamic. He wasn’t the nervous one, he wasn’t the blushing one and he wasn’t the one whose mind was running a thousand miles an hour - and he planned on using that to his advantage. He released the piece of jewelry that was now safely placed around your neck, and he traced his fingers down to your shoulders and back up to the sides of your neck again, his touch soft and delicate. He felt your skin erupt in goosebumps again under his touch, and smirked. “Am I making you nervous, darling?” he asked, as you turned around to face him.
“You wish.” you barely whispered, and his smirk only grew.
“I do, actually.” he nodded, knowing he had caught you off guard with his response.
You watched his right hand as it made its way up your shoulders until it reached the side of your face. He cupped your cheek and softly moved his thumb up and down your skin which made you turn your head slightly to the side, leaning into his touch. You looked up at him and in your eyes he saw so many emotions that he struggled to pick one to try and figure out. However, there was one thing he knew, and it was that he’d seen that look in the mirror enough times every time he caught himself thinking about you - which was more than he cared to admit.
“Jesper-” you started, but he cut your words short, leaning in and urgently pressing his lips against yours. It was a kiss filled with emotion and unspoken feelings, both of you trying to say everything you had been keeping in for so long. His other hand came up to cup your free cheek, and your hands grabbed the front of his shirt, bringing him closer to you by a pull of it.
“I love you.” he spoke against your lips once you both pulled away - foreheads pressed together and eyes still closed, afraid of even the smallest of movements disrupting the peace you were both feeling.
“About damn time.” you chuckled and he rolled his eyes, pulling away.
“You know, if i hadn't said anything you wouldn’t have either, so i’d be a bit nicer to me if i were-” much like he had done just minutes before, you cut him off by hooking your hands around his neck and pulling him in.
“Shut up.” you said, and he felt your smile against his lips.
“Well, if you ask so nicely.”

"You're lucky Kaz is sleeping," you say catching Jesper in his walk of shame. The sun rose up an hour ago but you have a feeling Jesper hasn't slept yet.
"I've done nothing wrong," he says but even he doesn't believe that. You both know he's done a little gambling, a little betting, and he's definitely lost some money. Otherwise, he would've come home sooner ready to celebrate.
"I know your wicked ways by now. You don't fool me," you tease. In all honesty, you couldn't care less if Jesper likes gambling, but you know Kaz hates it - especially when the money is meant for something else.
"Luckily, you're not the one I have to fool," he replies tipping his hat. He's about to walk past you when he spins around.
"Perhaps you could fool him for me? He'd never get upset if it were you." You make a sound that falls somewhere between a snort and a laugh.
"Did you not hear him berate me the other day when I misplaced some of his documents in his office? He went on about that for the entire day," you chuckle remembering just how upset he'd been that someone would dare create, what he considered, a mess in his office.
"I heard him. But if it had been me, he'd gone on for a lot longer than a day," Jesper counters but you're not sure what he's getting at. For as long as you've known Kaz, he's been infatuated by Inej. He doesn't give you special treatment and he certainly doesn't feel what Jesper is insinuating.
"I think you had a little too much to drink last night if you're thinking Kaz would feel any sort of affection towards me. Or that I feel something for him," you say but your blushing cheeks give you away. Jesper sees right through you.
"I'm not going to get involved in that all I'm saying is don't wait too long, okay?"
"What?"
"To tell him that you love him." He pats your shoulder as he passes you, but you're too dumbstruck to react. What do you even say to that? You can't tell Kaz you love him, it would ruin the entire dynamic of your relationship. You work well because you keep it professional. You can't pine over him, it's the kind of thing that will get you killed on a heist.
"I need sleep too," you mumble locking the doors of the club before you head upstairs. Your head hits the pillow just as someone wakes you up again. Three hours have passed, but you feel like you haven't slept at all.
"Sorry to wake you, but I need your help." Kaz leaves your room before you can say anything, which is probably a good thing considering what you and Jesper talked about last night. You get ready and walk to his office where Jesper and Inej are already waiting.
"What's going on?" you ask taking a seat.
"We have a mission. But we're not the only ones interested." That mission becomes your doom. You're in the room that night when Pekka stops by.
"Maybe you need a little incentive to do the right thing." His goons are holding Kaz in place when Pekka turns to you.
"Maybe if I take one of your little crows, you'll know I'm not messing around this time." He's shot you before you even have time to reach for your throwing knives. It's one of the only times you've ever been caught off guard - too busy being mortified by the way they grabbed Kaz.
"You let this go, Mr Brekker. Or we'll have a real problem." You fall to your knees feeling a burning sensation right around your lower ribs. The bullet must've hit something vital because there's no way you would be bleeding this badly if it wasn't fatal. You've been shot before but it's never felt like this.
"What can I do?" Kaz asks immediately by your side. You drag yourself closer to the wall so you can lean on the cold surface.
"Kaz..."
"No! You're not dying, do you hear me? Tell me what to do." You tell him to bring the first aid kit but there won't be anything in there to help you. You don't have to be a medic to know that your laboured breathing means damage to the lungs and nobody comes back from that.
"How are you feeling?" he asks when he returns with the box filled with bandages meant for superficial wounds and creme meant for burns. He won't find anything in there that will help him remove the bullet or stop the bleeding.
"Like someone who was shot." It's safe to say, Kaz doesn't appreciate your inappropriate humour right now. But you've already accepted what he's refusing to. You're going to die and he can't do anything about it because that's the way life is sometimes.
"It's not going to help, Kaz. You really want to help me? Get that vodka I like from the bar." It offers you precious minutes alone where you can feel the anger of having to leave behind the people you love. You don't want to go but by the time, a medic can come here you'll be long gone. You don't want to die in pain while some stranger searches your insides for a bullet.
"Here." You didn't even notice him come back, but he's holding two glasses. You surprise yourself when you're able to lift your arm and accept the glass. It doesn't hurt as much anymore, and you have a feeling that's not a good thing. The burning feeling in your throat from the vodka distracts you if only for a few seconds.
"Sit with me." You look over at the boy you've loved for years now, and you loathe the fact that this is how it ends. You haven't truly lived yet. But there's no point in telling him when you know you won't even survive the night. You have to let go of him so he can find peace once your soul leaves him. You spot Jesper and Inej standing in the doorway to Kaz' office. They're looking over at you with tears in their eyes, and you hate having to leave them all behind. There's so much you still want to do and experience.
"No mourners," Kaz says sitting right next to you. His fingers graze yours in an attempt to comfort you but even now, he feels the terror of past events haunt him.
"No funerals," you finish with a taste of metal in your mouth. You won't make it. A fact both of you know but refuses to acknowledge.
You die and Kaz Brekker never finds out that you loved him the way he loved you.

Tumblr media
Working for Kaz Brekker meant that your life was in danger six days on seven when the luck was on your side, but that didn't stop you from having fun.
Not only you were part of the dregs, but you also were Nina's best friend, and that meant that no woman and no man had any chance to say no to you, not when you flirted with them.
It wasn't a secret that you loved fun, and just like Nina and Jesper you loved having people's eyes on you. Kaz knew that the three of you could easily flirt your way out from any trouble if needed to.
"Green or red?" you asked Nina with two dress in your hands.
"Have you seen yourself in the mirror? Definitely green." she answered without looking, she was too focus tailoring her makeup in the mirror.
From the high of his ruthlessly, Kaz Brekker had given to all of you the free night, and you had decided to go out with your friends and have fun.
"Still try to make Jesper admitting his feelings?" asked Nina while you brushed your hair.
"Jesper is Jesper, he flirts with everyone. If he doesn't a move, then there is an entire city that is waiting to do it." you said with more confident than you felt. Jesper Fahey was the boy who had fucked up your mind since the beginning, with his witty remarks and his flirty personality, you had fell for him as a kruge fell in Kaz's pocket.
You didn't want to have to go and console yourself with strangers, but at the same time you couldn't wait Jesper forever.
Nina chuckled helping you with your hair and then walking with you downstairs. "Let see if we can find a worthy partner for you, Y/n."
They reached Matthias and Jesper outside the Slat; you had the suspect that Inej would have stayed sat on Kaz's window all night keeping him company.
Matthias had to shut Jesper's mouth when you girls arrived. He was devouring you with his eyes and the Fjerdan couldn't hold a smirk.
Damn it. Did you plan to seduce all Ketterdam that night? Because he would easily surrender at you.
When you approached he composed himself. "I can't decide if you look amazing in that dress or if you'd look better without it."
He winked and saw a little blush on your cheek, but if you were shy you hid it very well with a sly smirk. "I guess you're gonna have to see yourself."
"It's a primise then." he said before the four of you started walking around the streets of Ketterdam.
Your relationship had always been like that. Jesper couldn't deny that his comments had become more true and spontaneous, he couldn't help it, and it was hilarious for the people around you, because it was oblivious how you both felt toward each other for everyone but you.
"Love, I don't think we can afford a table here." Matthias said to Nina once they stopped in front of one of the most fancy pub in Ketterdam.
"Leave me and Y/n deal with that." she winked taking your arm with hers and bringing you at the counter where the owner, a beautiful Kaelish woman, stood.
Jesper stayed at the door with Matthias looking you and Nina flirting with the woman. He saw how her eyes were on you while you giggled and smiled at her. He couldn't hear what you were saying, but it seemed that it was working because now the woman had her arms rested on the counter, her face close to yours.
"Hard, isn't it?" asked knowingly Matthias beside him. "See the girl you like flirting with someone else and obliviously being reciprocated."
"They are Nina and Y/N, they always do...that" Jepser said waving his hands in the air to point you girls. "You are the one who find it strange."
"Maybe you are right, but it's one of the things I love about her. But still, it's not a shame admitting you are jealous...I am too."
He didn't have time to answer that you and Nina arrived with two huge smiles on. I am not jealous. "Guess who has a table as a gift of the house?"
"We do, don't we?" asked Jesper excited.
"Yes! Come." you said taking his arm and bringing him at the table with Nina and Matthias behind you.
"You have to thanks Y/n, she did all the work. The owner couldn't take off her eyes from her as she talked." said Nina smirking as Jesper shifted on his seat.
"I was lucky she liked my accent." you waved your hand in the hand as it was nothing.
Nina chuckled. "More like she wanted to hear you moaning with your accent in her bedroom."
Jesper and Matthias choked themself with their drinks while you started laughing. "At least my beautiful accent gave us a table and free drinks."
You enjoyed the night, drinking and dancing. Jesper knew that people flirted with you everyday, but he thought that someone was pranking him that night. Every time he turned around someone was talking with you, making you giggle or blush. He was getting crazy.
Couldn't they just...walk away?
He moved closer to you at some point and took you into a conversation everytime he saw someone approaching.
You noticed that something annoyed Jesper, but you couldn't figure out what. You all were having fun, even if with your disbelief he hadn't danced with anyone but you. Was he ill?
"I'll go and take two drinks, stay here dove." he said in your ear walking away and disappearing behind the crowd.
You stayed there for while when a young man of few years older than you approached smiling. "You must be the star of the night because no one is shining like you."
You tried your best to not laugh. "And you must be in the wrong place, the circus in on the other side of the city."
"Ouch, pretty and quick-witten. A letal combination." he said amused.
You shrugged. "What can I say, Ketterdam made me."
You two kept talking about silly things keeping the flirt in the air. He was the one more eager, you were just waiting Jesper but the company of a pretty man wasn't bad at all.
You were laughing at one of his joke when an arm took your waist and squeezed you. "Piss off dude, she is with me."
You watched Jesper with widened eyes as he burned the man with his eyes.
"She didn't seem so to me." said the man annoyed.
"Well sorry to disappoint you. Now go away if you don't want trouble."
"Jesper!" you didn't know what was happening. You had been talking with people all night and he hadn't said a word, so why now was different?
"It's fine, I'll go." you and Jesper remained alone and he looked like nothing happened.
"Drink?" he said offering you one glass.
You shoke your head astonished and walked away toward the door. You needed fresh air and stay as far away as possible from him.
"Y/n!" you heard his voice behind you but you didn't care. What was wrong with him? He had never had such behaviour in none of your nights out. "Y/n wait!" He followed you outside, the drinks forgotten somewhere inside. "Tell me what's wrong."
"What was that?" you asked crossing your arm in front of your chest.
"What was what?" he said confused making you rolling your eyes.
"You were...rude. You had no reason to threat him like you did."
You could see in his eyes that he didn't know what to say. He looked for an good lie but it was hard under your inquisitors eyes. "Y-you were suppose to be with me!"
"So? That never stopped you from finding other partners." you raised an eyebrow obliviously.
He gave a quick look around, as if something could help him, but when his eyes fell on you again he knew he had to tell the true otherwise he could loose you.
"I was annoyed, alright? All those people flirting with you, saints I couldn't even turn around a moment that someone had already approached you." he agitated his hands in the air while you widened your eyes.
"Why should it bother you anyway?" you asked defensive.
He looked at you astonished, as if you were asking why the water was wet. "Because I like you! Hadn't been oblivious enough these past months?!" Now your mouth was a bit hopen, speechlees. He seemed to notice what he had said after few seconds. "Oh...it would be too late saying that it's not true, wouldn't it?"
You nodded quickly. "Yes, definitely too late."
"Well, you weren't suppose to find out like this. I had planned something like a date, maybe with some candles and a good view, but I guess that in front of a pub in the Barrel sounds fine too." he tried to joke shrugging while you were still processing his words.
"You are still in time, the night is not over for that date." you sounded casual but you couldn't hold your smile while you said it.
He looked at you surprised before smiling like a child. "Let's tell Nina and Matthias we are leaving then."
You walked inside the pub, both smiling like idiots, before you felt a hand on you wrist that turned you around and a pair of soft lips on yours. Jesper was kissing you while he kept you close with his right hand on your waist and the other on your cheek, and you didn't think twice about putting your hands behind his neck.
"I have to make sure no one will flirt with you again tonight." he said seductively with a smirk a few inches from your mouth making you blush.

You had all been working tirelessly for days with this new heist, and you were spending a lot of time with Kaz while planning. You had sat in his office together all night and he had let you sleep on his couch for a few hours at the morning after you had fallen to sleep with pen in your hand and blueprints still on your lap, he had taken them away from you, careful not to touch you and sometimes even threw a blanket over you.
You thought he was just being a good boss and rewarding you for working so hard, even when he didn't do that with anyone else. You had just grown accustomed to it.
And now you were all doing your final plans for the heist happening in a few days, counting the plan over for the first time. You sat at the table in front of Kaz, but the rest of the Crows were scattered around the room.
“Y/N and I will be here-” he started, but you interrupted him.
"Kaz, I told you before that guards patrol our spot irregularly. What happens if we get caught when we're breaking in?" you asked, pointing at the spot on the map.
“I’ll protect you if that happens.” he answered without looking up, but making everyone else look up in surprise, eyeing between you and Kaz. You were too tired to realize the absurdness of his sentence though and took it as a joke, even though it was weird of Kaz to make a joke like that.
“So you’re kind of a mother hen for me.” you chuckled, half-expecting Kaz to glare at you but this time he surprised you and everyone in the room even further.
Kaz smiled.
Genuinely smiled.
It wasn’t a smirk, it was a smile. He dropped his facade in front of everyone for just a moment, before he noticed you all staring at him and quickly dropped his smile and clearing his throat, pretending it didn’t just happen.
But you, in your tired state, bit your lip and smiled at him. “Kaz?”
“Hm?”
“You should smile more often. Your smile is beautiful.” you muttered, Kaz froze and after a moment all the Crows in the room let out a stifled burst of laughter, snapping Kaz out from his frozen state and silencing them with his infamous glare.
It took you a moment before you realized what you had just blurted out, but when it hit you, you clasped a hand in front of your mouth and rose up from the table, quickly making your way out from the room. Kaz stared after you for a moment before he cleared his throat again.
“Well, as I was saying, Inej, you should go to your position at the roof, here. Jesper, you wait for Y/N’s signal before going in.” he tried to continue planning like nothing had just happened, but everyone could see the faint blush on his cheeks. The Bastard of the Barrel didn’t blush. At least if he didn’t have something going on with the person who made him blush.
And it was a known fact among the Crows that Kaz Brekker, Dirtyhands, feared across Ketterdam, was head over heels for you, even if he didn’t admit it. Everyone knew it and saw the way he looked at you, except, of course, you.
Next morning you didn’t show up to breakfast, and Kaz didn’t find you from your room. And he realized that he needed to talk to you, let you know that he wasn’t angry about your little slip, and you had no reason to be embarrassed. He had made you all overwork, so slips like that happened. He, of course, wouldn’t reveal his own feelings for you, but the thought of you having feelings for him brought the slightest amount of warmth to his cold heart.
He had tried to ask around, looking for you but you had vanished, just like he had taught you to vanish if danger is near. He just never thought that he would be that danger.
“If you’re looking for Y/N, they’re probably setting themselves on fire right now.” Nina smiled as she came across to Kaz scanning the Club in hopes to catch a sight of you. Kaz swallowed at that.
“I figured.” he frowned, not looking at Nina. But where were you setting yourself on fire?
Nina just winked before licking her lips and disappearing back into the crowd.
It took the whole day before you dared to leave your friend’s place and tiptoed your way to your room and could just hope that everyone forgot what you did. Everyone was asleep when you got into your room and you believed that no one knew you had come back.
But Kaz would recognize your steps anywhere, and even though he would never admit it either, he was immediately relieved when he knew that you were back at the Slat, that you were safe.
And maybe someday he could finally tell you that he cared about you, in a different way he cared about his other Crows...
