#an interesting challenge of incorporating specific words

Okay I made a little post about this but it’s jawing at my brain
A deep dive into Ginny Weasley’s music taste
(Not specifically 90s timeline)
SPICE GIRLS
Okay so even though it might be cringy now she was definitely so obsessed with the spice girls. With their whole girl power agenda she definitely was really into it, and they have great party music. Hermione being one of her closest friends and muggle born showed her the spice girls over one summer and gave her tons of magazines on them. Tonks offered to take her to see them but Molly said absolutely not. Favorite song Wanna be obviously, it’s her designated getting ready song.
THE SMITHS/RADIOHEAD/NIRVANA/WEAZER
Okay so, Ginny dated Dean for almost a whole year being with someone you naturally gain interest in their interest. Dean being a muggle born introduced Ginny to all sorts of muggle bands The Smiths and Radiohead having a lot of sad songs I think she found very healing with all her trauma from the chamber. Nirvana is like the OG teenage dirt bag band so yes she loves them. Nirvana reminds her a lot of Sirius so she got Harry into listening to them. Weazer came from Seamus actually, when she was getting used to being around Deans friend group music came up and Seamus lent her one of his mixtapes. Her favorite song is Back to the old house because it makes her miss time before Tom and before the war.
DAVID BOWIE
So Bowie. I think Bowie would come from Bill and Arthur. Bill was born in the early 70s so it come from his childhood. We all know Arthur loves muggle things so I think music would be incorporated in that. Bowie has a perfect blend of sad and feel good music, we know she was close with Tonks but Remus helped her through second year too and Bowie was one thing they bonded over and what made Ginny trust Remus after Tom. Her favorite song is Changes because it feels like growing up.
EMINEM/D-12
Completely George and Charlie influence. She loved D-12 first obviously but she prefers Eminem. She knows every word. To every song. Harry loves when she gets wasted at parties and just stands on the table and belts out the lyrics. She’s totally a Doctor Dre fan too. The Slim shady album is her favorite it dropped in 1999 when she was freshly 17. Charlie took her to see him when she was 19 she went all out saggy jeans, heavy smudged eyeliner, bandana. When family dinners where to serious at the Burrow after the war. Her and George would start singing the dirtiest songs to get Molly’s attention on them. Favorite song in his discography is Under the Influence.
DO DOUBT/GWEN STEFANI, BIKINI KILL
Girl power rock bands I don’t have a ton to say about them. She loves No Doubt but proffers Gwen’s solo stuff. Obviously knows them from Tonks. She gave Ginny her Tragic Kingdom vinyl which released in 1995 perfect timing for her 4th year at hogwarts when she’s angry about being left out of order business. Her favorite Gwen song is Rich Girl.
ARVIL LAVIGNE
Okay so Arvil really started getting big in 2002 when her album Let Go came out. She wasn’t super big into her with that album but followed along still. Her teammates on the Harpy’s loved her and played her music in the locker rooms. She picked up again with her when Girlfriend came out but her favorite song is Here’s to never growing up.
(Later music)
TAYLOR SWIFT
I never liked that people think Ginny isn’t girlie because she grew up with 7 brothers. Yes, she is a total tomboy but she never saw being a girl as making her weak. It was just a challenge with her brothers but it just gave her more reasons to get to prove herself. If she had Taylor in her teens her favorite album would be Red or Evermore. Cowboy like me is a perfect song to describe her and Harry. “The skeletons in both our closets plotted hard to fuck this up” perfect example of their relationships with Voldemort. They definitely avoided that they had that in common for a while but after they accepted it they where able to heal through each other. I think the song I hate it here from TTPD would be one Ginny could relate too because honestly when she was completely alone her therapy was Tom and the diary. It was where she would escape too. I think her hearing that song as an adult would have an even deeper meaning because it’s so sad and describes how lonley-ness feels beautifully.
- If you want my other opinions and more bands I think she would like feel free to ask I have so many others artist and songs
This kinda turned in to me relating Ginny to my favorite music but oh well 🤷‍♀️

Hi hi! I have a weird question/thought after seeing the talk about Idia's use of language. There are a lot of things that are just unable to translate from Japanese to English, and some things that get changed as short hand. The whole nerdy implications of Idia using "-Shi" are basically absent from EN, instead he seems to use "Mr." (If I recall correctly) which really doesn't give the same impression? In your personal opinion - is there anyway you'd personally localize it? Stick with the same? Remove it completely? Use "M'lady/M'lord" instead? (haha)
Hello hello!! I love your "M'lady/M'lord" solution more than I can say ♡ It is associated with the past while still being used by some people in present-day just for fun, which is just like how Idia speaks! That would have been so great for the English-language adaptation!
As you say, Idia's honorific for others has (kind of) been translated as "Mr." on EN, but only in a select few places.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For the most part it has just been removed, but the curious continuity makes it seem like he thinks that only Malleus, Azul, Grim and Riddle are (sometimes) worthy of "Mr." (the Riddle screenshots below are even both from the same vignette).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then there is the Harveston sub-plot between Sebek and Marja, where Sebek refuses to refer to Marja with an honorific until she proves herself worthy of respect (by fixing his plushie).
Tumblr media
At that point he awards her with an extremely respectful honorific (equivalent to "-sama," and the same word Silver uses with Lilia).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Marja, however, immediately gives him permission to refer to her in the same way he has been throughout the entire trip.
Tumblr media
Idia is a psuedo-narrator for this sub-plot, commenting on Sebek's disrespectful way of speaking in both languages.
Tumblr media
But on EN he then proceeds to refer to Marja in the same way as Sebek (and everyone else) does.
Tumblr media
This has the unfortunate result of making Idia look odd for mentioning it in the first place, when the odd person is actually Sebek, as everyone else is using a respectful honorific with Marja.
Tumblr media
Idia using "M'lady" and everyone else (except Sebek) using "Ms." probably would have been a lot more successful in getting the situation across to people who may not be familiar with such Japanese-language nuances!
As for what I personally would go with...this conundrum reminded me of this amazing joke by @anottercoffee on Twitter:
Tumblr media
And I would be very tempted to go for the "fansubber" solution of translating everything literally, but just having the words doesn't mean that the players are going to understand the nuances, and might cause even more confusion.
If "-san" and "-senpai" are just mouth-sounds to someone, they're not going to understand the significance behind Riddle and Azul dropping it from Leona and Riddle's names in important moments, for example.
Tumblr media
But maybe that's okay! Because at the moment, the alternative that we have is everything getting removed from everywhere, and no one has the chance to understand anything at all.
The best comparison I have come across is Lord of the Rings and Star Trek, where authors incorporated languages that are completely invented, giving no one any chance of understanding them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Japanese is a language that already exists, so it seems like it would actually be less of a challenge to introduce world-specific terms like "-sama" and "-chan" for people to either glaze over as a world-building aspect that doesn't interest them, or to gradually adapt to through sheer repetition, so by the end of Book 6 they might have a greater-than-zero understanding of the nuances of a foreign language (much like another magic-school series did with Latin).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The manga is actually approaching the honorifics in a different way than the game and giving “Mr.” to everybody, so Azul’s “Riddle-san," Crowley’s “Trappola-kun” and Deuce’s “Diamond-senpai” are all now Mr. Rosehearts, Mr. Trappola and Mr. Diamond (more here).
Tumblr media
So it seems that VIZ Media did not agree with Aniplex USA's localization?
What is going to be the most interesting is the novel! Slated for an August, 2024 official English-language release, the novel is also being overseen by VIZ Media.
This means that we might see "Mr." being used everywhere (to uphold continuity with the manga), but the novel goes much deeper into character relationships than the game, and relationships are what honorifics are all about.
Cater, for example, uses them with everyone:
“Usually, Cater does not ever yobisute anyone. When he calls to Trey, he always adds ‘kun’ to his name...When Cater uses Trey’s name like this, it is only when he is really serious. Only when it is important.” -Twisted Wonderland the first novel
Tumblr media
Is Cater going to be calling Trey "Mr. Clover"? And how are they even going to localize these sections describing a feature of a language that is not being spoken? It gives us a lot to look forward to!
In the end, writing out Japanese-specific honorifics into English might actually cause more confusion than it's worth, which is why Twst (and so many other foreign-language-adapting-to-an-English-speaking-audience properties) has gone in the direction that it has.
I like to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume that they know more than we do about what is going on, and that there are important reasons behind the choices they have made.
But I also think that the sheer popularity of the "fansubber" approach to this situation is a good sign that maybe people are sometimes okay with not understanding things, as properties like Lord of the Rings and Star Trek have shown us!
While too late for Twst, it will be interesting to see how this situation continues to evolve in the years to come. Maybe, one day, we will even get an official localization that introduces honorifics directly!
If such an experiment fails it will be most expensive for the localizer, and money is likely a large factor behind why companies might be reluctant to take such a gamble and would rather play it safe and just have everyone say "Mr."

Fandom Creator's Self-Rec Game!
Choose five favourites from your own creations (and tell me why, if you like!), then pass on to at least five other people. I'd love to hear what you're proudest of.
Tagged by @the-pen-pot and actually I think @anonymintea also tagged me a while back? I vaguely remember seeing that in my activity and kind of recoiling at the idea of trying to rec my own stuff. lmfao But I have time to sit down and do it now and I am being so brave. I am just going to rec Merlin fics for this post, since that's what I've been working on and thinking about for the last four years or so, and those fics are the ones that are fresh in my mind. (Honourable mention goes to my Originals series, though, because I spent so much time on that sumabitch.)
All right, five favourites...know that this is excruciating for me and feels very cringe, because I am not normal. lmao
And Down the River's Dim Expanse (Merthur, 13k)
In which Arthur is a water spirit who tries to drown Merlin. Merlin is not impressed.
(This one feels like it kind of just disappeared into the morass of words I've vomited up on the topic of BBC Merlin. I don't think it's got nearly as much attention as any of my other fics, but I'm fond of it because I love fairytales and folklore and specifically anything to do with any kind of creature that lives in the water and especially if said creature tries to drown people. I'd love to do something like this again and have several ideas for fairytales to adopt (i.e. twist completely out of shape).
The Book of Merthur (Merthur, 600k+)
'It was awkward business to ignore a man sitting the length of one knee from you, especially when he had such voluminous ears, and though Arthur made a valiant attempt at it, he had soon to abandon this in favour of grousing at Merlin for a myriad of grievous transgressions, the most pressing of which was his manner of sitting far too close, as if they were mates. This shortcoming was to become a theme when they laid down after passing round a hard cheese and some bread, Merlin in Arthur’s cloak, and Arthur in nothing at all, because his was the greater constitution; and whilst Arthur was working himself into the choicest bit of ground, with the least stones, Merlin suddenly rolled over, mummified within the cloak Arthur’s thoughtfulness had provided, and put his nose into Arthur’s neck.'
The 'yes homo' we all deserved, righting the heterosexual wrongs of canon.
(My thus far 646,363-word essay on the issues I have with canon. I'm eight chapters from the end and already feeling that post-huge-project depression even though I have several ideas for what I want to do next. I really love writing historical fiction and have incorporated that into fics before, but this fic has shown me that I really really love writing fantasy heavily inspired by history: it's the same amount of research, with the added bonus that I can do whatever the hell I want. Also, as mentioned in my first rec, I really love fairytales and folklore, and this gives me the chance to incorporate them in a way that straight up historical fiction doesn't allow. Basically, this fic has allowed me to shove my boner for Arthurian legend and medieval history down people's throats at the same time. Ain't free gay fanfiction where I can do what I like great?)
Fools by Heavenly Compulsion (Merthur, ?k)
In which Arthur is gay and besotted, Merlin is bisexual and oblivious, and they have to get their shit together through WhatsApp.
(I have no idea how many words this technically is, because it's comprised entirely of screenshots of fake social media posts. I've read a few social media fics and enjoyed them and got a whole bug up my ass wanting to try it. I thought it would be an interesting challenge because it would take away so many things that a writer can usually rely on to tell a story, and for me specifically it would completely cut me off from any kind of descriptive writing. So basically I cut off all my limbs except like one arm and decided to see how I got on with that. And it HAS been really interesting to try and shape a narrative through texts and Instagram and twitter posts and still try and convey emotions and distinct personalities with such limitations on what I can actually show. It's also a lot of fun putting the posts together, although you can definitely fall down a deep rabbit hole of trying to pick just the right photo.)
Whereat the Two Sword on the Field of Death a Deathless Love (Merthur, 131k)
In a land of myth and a time of magic, the destiny of a great kingdom rests on the shoulders of a young boy. But not quite in the way you think. 'The Once and Future King'/Merlin mashup; now with 50% more gay.
(This was the first Merlin fic I ever wrote, and an homage to one of my favourite books. It was also me trying to get the show rewrite monkey off my back and distinctly failing at that, since I went on to write one that is over 600,000 words and still not complete. It's also proof that I am 100% capable of rewriting the show in under 150k, I just chose to inflict over 600,000 words on anyone insane enough to sit down and read a 600k gay porn version of BBC Merlin.)
And Time and the World Are Ever in Flight (Merthur, 39k)
In which Arthur returns to the 21st century, learns about Google, and finally realises his dream of running away to a farm with Merlin.
(Listen, the finale damaged me, I'm still damaged, and I tried to undo it with nearly 40k of tea and baby sheep. A.K.A. the one where Arthur returns and they run a sheep farm in Ireland together and finally figure out they're gay for each other and neither of them is alone ever again.)
Tagging @aemelia (you will have to rec all of yours lmao) @kirythestitchwitch @thetourguidebarbie and anyone else who wants to do this and has multiple fics.

20 questions for writers
under the cut. Thanks to @everybodyknows-everybodydies for tagging🖤
Tagging back: @nuwanders @jiubilant @ervona @ehlnofay @druidx @blossom-adventures @sylvienerevarine @throughtrialbyfire @da3drat no pressure
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
Five
2. What's your total AO3 word count?
198327
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Just elder scrolls. I have a feeling that's gonna be it for me. I've been tempted to write stardew valley fic lately which would perhaps be classed as "crack" (I know what that is in theory but the way people use it makes no sense to me) but I took a cursory look at the tag and I don't think the stardew valley fandom is ready for a ray fic lmao
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
Well. I have five.
5. Do you respond to comments?
I try 🫠 it haunts me how often I've left my beloved mutuals on read..... but if that's u and I did, I am telepathically beaming this: !!!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Making out sloppy style etc etc
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
lol. lmao even
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
.....within AO3 I guess it's "Morning" but also that's set at a refugee camp? I will say the skyrim story will have a more peaceful ending but up until now fic writing has been an outlet for my thwarted rage and covid brain damage soooo
8. Do you get hate on fics?
I mean this is generally a culture of positive feedback. Someone did yell at me once for hitting martin septim with the transgender beam which is a level of no-life-havin loserdom which could be classed as "hate" but came off as pure cope and seethe
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
I really bristle at the word smut sorry its too cutesy. I was a prodomme for seven years I don't do euphemisms lol. I wrote a sex scene into IITT to see how I felt about writing sex scenes. I learned that I am only interested in writing them if they serve specific functions. I have absolutely zero judgment toward anyone who wants to write about fuckin and suckin, that's just not why I'm here
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
No but recently my household watched game of thrones together and my bf and his brother were cracking jokes like what if one of these medieval characters had a gundam. Neither of them read fic so I was like don't be too entertained by yourselves. I bet that has been written. looked it up on ao3 and sure as shit
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
I'm not gonna lie I did find a fic where someone very obviously ripped me off but I don't wanna call them out. One specific instance where they bit my style was so clumsily applied as to be obvious, but their prose in general was fantastic so like. who care.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Not as far as I know but that would make me holler
13. Have you ever co-written a fic?
Nope. I'm not opposed to the idea but it's hard to imagine how I'd do this given my process. I think I'd be pretty difficult to work with
14. What's your all-time favorite ship?
?!? I dunno I don't have one. I put a lot of effort into writing martinhok but I could not say that one, due to how overwhelmingly heterosexual the tag is. I'm sorry but can everyone who's not a faggot please pipe down
15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
I have my moments with the skyrim wip. I've signed myself up for something pretty complicated and challenging but I also learned that I can finish things so I'm not really worried about it. The fact of the matter is: I do not care if this is good. It matters that it is done so I can move on with my life. If parts of it are boring and overlong that's yalls problem
16. What are your writing strengths?
I get a lot of compliments on my worldbuilding. I do think a lot about the minutiae of material culture and think I have a talent for incorporating detail in engaging ways
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
I'm a cornball. This is a corny activity. I don't really care because I'm doing it for free. Enjoy the unsolicited view into an internet stranger's terrible psyche
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
I try to apply with a light hand. I'm a dumbass sheltered American and I can mostly make myself understood in a Spanish-speaking country but that's about it. I like playing around with language and the idea of multilingual societies matters to me so I include it, but I'm not a linguist so I try to work within my limits. Whether I am successful at this is up to others.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Elder scrolls. Never felt compelled until i spent a winter playing oblivion and went wow this game has an incredibly bleak narrative behind a silly aesthetic. Oops now I'm in a lore pit
20. Favorite fic you've written?
The Nature of Fire is my best prose hands down. I'm gonna be real with y'all I am desperate for people to read it. It is genuinely the best I can do at this point and if you like what I've done so far, well, whatever u read sucks compared to this fic.

How to Write Poetic Prose in Your Novel
Tumblr media
Poetic prose is a style of writing that combines the beauty and rhythm of poetry with the narrative and descriptive elements of prose. It can add depth and richness to your novel and make your writing stand out. If you're interested in incorporating poetic prose into your novel, here are some tips to help you get started.
Read Poetry
The first step in writing poetic prose is to read poetry. Read a variety of poets and styles to get a sense of the different ways that language can be used to create beauty and meaning. Pay attention to the use of imagery, metaphor, and symbolism, as well as the rhythm and sound of the words.
Use Imagery and Metaphor
Imagery and metaphor are powerful tools for creating poetic prose. They can help to create vivid and memorable descriptions that engage the reader's senses and emotions. When using imagery and metaphor, it's important to choose words that are specific and concrete. Instead of using generalities, try to paint a picture with your words.
Pay Attention to Rhythm and Sound
The rhythm and sound of your words can also contribute to the poetic quality of your prose. Pay attention to the length and cadence of your sentences, as well as the use of repetition and alliteration. Experiment with different sentence structures and word choices to create a musical quality to your writing.
Use Symbolism
Symbolism is another tool that can add depth and meaning to your writing. It can help to create a sense of universality and connect your story to larger themes and ideas. When using symbolism, it's important to choose symbols that are meaningful and relevant to your story.
Don't Overdo It
While poetic prose can be beautiful and engaging, it's important not to overdo it. Too much poetic language can become distracting and take away from the story. Use poetic language sparingly and only when it serves a purpose.
Edit Carefully
As with any style of writing, it's important to edit your work carefully. Read your writing out loud to get a sense of the rhythm and sound of your words. Look for places where you can tighten up your language or add more detail. Consider having someone else read your work to get feedback on the effectiveness of your poetic prose.
Conclusion
Writing poetic prose can be a challenging but rewarding experience. By reading poetry, using imagery and metaphor, paying attention to rhythm and sound, using symbolism, and editing carefully, you can create a novel that is both beautiful and engaging. With these tips and tricks in mind, you'll be well on your way to writing poetic prose that enhances your story and captivates your readers.

I have a project that I started for Nanorimo. I won Nano but after it was over I lost the motivation to write the last of the first draft. I think it’s a combination of not knowing exactly how to end it, not a lot of people to share it with, and being worried that I’m gonna re-read what I have and just find it bad.
Hello, Friend! Please, sit down. Take a deep breath. I'm going to say a variation of a form of writing advice that I'm sure you've heard a lot, but I'll hopefully elaborate it to the point where it clicks. I actually started writing through NaNoWriMo, it was a really great way to build up the muscle of consistent practice. Did my first six or so novels like that. Fun!
But I have good news and bad new about your first draft. The bad news is that it probably isn't perfect. The good news is that that's a great place to be in.
For one thing, NaNo specifically is not a traditional way to write a very stable first draft. People will spend years on what you've done in 30 days. To compare them is comparing your blanket fort with someone else's McMansion and thinking "dang what if my blanket fort never has faux-Roman arches".
Some people say their first drafts are perfect. This confuses me but I accept it and believe them when they say it. I do think that these people are not talking about drafts they carved out of word-flesh in a month or less. That's an entirely different game to play. When you hear people talk about how you're supposed to have a shitty first draft it could be hard to swallow. We don't want to feel like we put in all this hard work to make something shitty. So maybe I can say it a different way:
Your first draft is the skeletal structure of the story as a whole. It is the frame to what you're trying to achieve.
And I can say from experience that not liking your first draft doesn't feel the way you might think it will if you go at it the right way. I've written twelve books and there's only maybe two that I read fragments from and genuinely cringe. And even then there's still stuff I like about it.
Maybe you went into some kind of fugue state for a month and wrote a bunch of stuff that you hate every part of. You're a big high fantasy fan and you wrote a gritty detective novel. You love Dark Academia romance and when you read your NaNo you find it is just a list of every slur you could think of and new ones that could be added to the lexicon. If this happens to you then yes, your first draft is objectively terrible and you should probably take yourself to the hospital.
More likely your thoughts will look like this:
Maybe I should cut this. It's not really needed.
Oh I forgot the protagonist has this specific trait, I should remember that and incorporate more in the rest of the book
Hah yeah I see where I was going with this.
I should add more details about this concept, considering I now know about this other concept.
Hah man that's a lot of typos. (Assuming you're like me)
These are the types of things I have thought when I looked over literally every first draft I've ever edited since the dawn of my time as a writer. You are not likely to rend your clothes in shame and burrow underground. Even if you find some weird shift that happens in NaNo novels, like the genre or tone changing midway through the document - professional writers do that too. It can be a more efficient way to explore the space you're working it.
It can be a really interesting challenge! It helps too that you took some time off - I try and take at least a week between draft edits, even though it can be painful. You'll be able to see it with fresher eyes.
My usual strategy for editing my own drafts is to read from the top with curiosity and excitement and treat it like a puzzle. Is this what I want? Can it be better? Was there something I missed? Incidentally, when I'm stuck at a point in the novel I use the same trick and it helps every time. It's how Chuck Palahinuik did Fight Club!
So yeah you already did a huge thing by finishing a NaNo. Why not take a look back, if not just to enjoy the crazy and chaotic fruits of your effort?
Also - in regards to people not reading your work. Out of 12 novels I've probably had 3 read all the way through. It can suck, but it's okay and it doesn't mean they aren't good. Validate yourself and enjoy your own writing and start putting shit online/self-publishing/querying to take a chance!

the linchpin of the subordination of women, the impetus and structure of women’s gendered status as second class, is sexuality, socially gendered through sexualized misogyny. We are placed on the bottom of the gender hierarchy by the misogynistic meanings that male dominant societies create, project onto us, attribute to us, which, in my observation and analysis, center on women’s sexuality. This has nothing whatsoever to do with biology, which serves, however powerfully, as sexuality’s after-the-fact attributed naturalized rationalization and supposed ratification. Sexualized misogyny merges synergistically with myriad inequalities: it sucks up and incorporates age-based specifics, takes on every racialized and caste and class guise. In other words, I reject the “single-axis” notion argued by what is currently inaccurately being called “gender-critical feminism.”
[…]
Transgender feminist theorization and realization, emerging into view but begun long ago—in a brilliant literature from Sandy Stone to Julia Serano to Esperanza—embodies a politics of its own but also sheds new light on feminist politics. All this suggests to me that “woman” is a combination of sex and gender, such that sex can be a sufficient condition for being considered a woman but has never been a necessary one. Sufficient, because most women so assigned at birth do not affirmatively identify with all women and women’s interests, or even as women really (seeing oneself as part of any group with men in it has more dignity); many (even most) are not critical of male supremacy; but all are constrained to live women’s lives, whether they see it that way or not. They are our people.
Not necessary, because not only are trans women living women’s lives—often much the worst of that life—but the transgender women I know, anyway, embrace womanhood consciously, are far more woman-identified than a vast swath of the women assigned female at birth (so-called “natal women” sometimes) whom I also know, many of whom have been trying to escape womanhood their whole lives for real reasons, yet often defend rape of other women as just a bad night and disidentify with women in every possible way short of their own transition, which is a lot of trouble and takes real courage. Trans women are, politically, women. They are our people too.
[…]
I take away two overarching lessons from these thoughts in progress. One is that feminism has not yet sufficiently changed the social meaning of gender around us for everyone to be safe and free and equal in gender terms, no matter how strongly we have confronted it or expanded it or bent it or transcended it or worked to abolish it. A lot of people still think it is biologically based. This much is truly obvious. Naturalism, that gender flows from sex in the sense of chromosomes and genitals and reproductive biology and so on, still exercises dominion over the world we all live in. Two, the feminist anti-transgender position is built on and reinforces, rather than challenges, that ideology. The notion that gender is biologically based—the philosophical foundation common to male dominant society and anti-trans feminists—is core to the reason why trans people know with their lives that they have to change their bodies to live the gender of their identities. Trans people do not need to make or defend a progressive contribution to gender politics to be entitled to change the way they inhabit gender. But trans people, in addition to all else they do and are, highlight feminism’s success—gender’s arbitrariness and invidiousness was our analysis originally—and feminism’s failure, or better our incomplete project—as the world is still largely stuck in what feminists oppose and fight to change, and trans people are determined to escape.
Babe wake up new MacKinnon essay on trans rights and feminism just dropped!!

have you ever considered doing a word count challenge where you intentionally set a word limit. it can force you to become much sharper because you cant rely on more words to explain certain elements. it can be a pretty fun challenge but also frustrating because you end up spending more time editing than writing because you might write a whole long thing and have a lot of ideas and then are forced to rewrite and condense it
Ooh that's a good idea for a future project!! I have a couple times had to meet a word limit for collabs & a zine, and I am regularly capped by specific formats we use for technical writing at work, and I think those are fun challenges!!
I think for me right now the biggest challenge lays in determining what each project needs most from me!! I am capable of firing off fun quick one shots, but I feel like sometimes a fic needs more?? I especially struggle with identifying the appropriate amount of relationship development between Reader & her love interest, because that is the part of fic I find most compelling!! What if I am doing too little?? What if I am doing too much??
This collab fic is especially complicated by the fact that I am pantsing it where I always otherwise plan out my fics lol. So the new scenes and ideas getting incorporated as I go I think are inflating the expected word count, RIP!! 💀

Hi Melissa, not sure if you've talked about this before and I simply missed it (very likely), so apologies if this is being repetitive: What exactly is your field of study and the topic of your dissertation, if you're comfortable sharing? I'm asking because I'm currently (very slowly) starting research for my master's thesis in Rhetoric & German Lit and my plan so far is to look into the depiction of bisexuality in Modern German literature and your recent article on Heartstopper in the Journal of Bisexuality (which I didn't know existed until now, so thank you!) seems to be VERY interesting in regards to ideas and methods from English literature I might be able to apply. Thank you for sharing! Do you happen to know of any sources specifically on bisexuality in novels, off the top of your head? (I still have to work through the references list of your article and the article in depth, only skimmed so far, if there's something in there.) Sorry if that was a bit all over the place, in any way: Sending good throughts, as random internet strangers do, and hoping you're having a good day/night! :) Rona
What am I studying? Truly the question of the century. 😂 Technically my Ph.D. will be in higher education administration but I really study college student development theory and more specifically the role of media in identity construction. But, I’ve also found myself doing a fair amount of media studies research too as a result of where my research intersects with disciplines outside of education. I’ve definitely embraced calling my research and outputs interdisciplinary.
I love talking about my dissertation topic so I’m happy to share. 😊 I am exploring how bisexual+ emerging adults (18-24 years old) use fiction-based parasocial relationships in identity construction processes. So really looking at how media representation helps people understand who they are and construct their identity.
As far as sources go, there are not a bunch on bisexual representation in novels specifically. These two look at bisexuality+ in YA novels:
Coletta, J. (2018). The missing B word: Compulsory binarization and bisexual representation in children’s literature. Jeunesse: Young People, Texts, Cultures, 10(1), 85-108. https://doi.org/10.1353/jeu.2018.0004
Kneen, B. (2015). Neither very bi not particularly sexual: The essence of the bisexual in young adult literature. Children’s literature in education, 46, 359-377. https://doi.org/10.1007/s10583-014-9237-8
I know I cited those two in my article. I was looking at representation in books specifically for another project but I found myself needing to move broader and look at general media representation. The Journal of Bisexuality (a favorite journal of mine as well) has a good amount of articles on media depictions of bisexuality over time. Most of them are movies and TV, but it’s a good starting point and it helps articulate how your research fills this gap: the lack of book-specific explorations of bisexual representation.
For representation in novels, think about looking in education journals. These are some but I know there are more out there about queer representation in novels:
Crisp, T., & Knezek, S. M. (2010). “I just don’t see myself here”: Challenging conversations about LGBTQ adolescent literature. English Journal, 99(3), 76-79.
Jimenéz, L. M. (2015). Representations in award-winning LGBTQ young adult literature from 2000–2013. The Journal of Lesbian Studies, 19(4), 406-422. http://doi.org/10.1080/10894160.2015.1057795
What I’ve found is that we have to be a little creative when researching bisexuality, especially when completing our literature reviews. Noting what’s there in terms of broader queer representation and then using that to justify why our research is important is a way to incorporate existing lit even if it’s not bisexual-specific.
Wishing you best of luck on your research! Let me know if there’s anything I can do. 😊

for Dead Mall Dare and Taken Under Wing - 📝 - What do you find most challenging when creating this AU?, and 😊 - What do you find the most fun about creating it? - @clxckwork-sun-n-moon
📝 - What do you find most challenging when creating this AU?
Dead Mall Dare Nothing much, so far! Already having a special interest with the 70s has been a big help, but I'm always learning more, and there's obviously areas I'm less familiar with, like the upcoming indoor parkour scene. If anything, though, I'd say the hardest part so far is learning how mall blueprints work lol
Taken Under Wing You'd think the answer would be something more practical, like "figuring out how YN gets around with the blindfold", but I already have that sorted out (the short of that explanation being that I'm somewhat of a freak and once spent a week as a teenager doing everything with a blindfold on because my OC was blind and I wanted a more in-depth feel for the experience).
The most challenging part of this AU is, in reality, how much side-stepping I've been doing to avoid coming off as offensive. Creating a cult from the ground up has been a lot of fun but there's only so many elements I can (innocently) incorporate before I fear someone will tell me it's a sacred part of their real religion. I've been doing my dutiful research, of course, but yeesh does that make the process take a while.
😊 - What do you find the most fun about creating it?
Dead Mall Dare Aside from the fic being one big self indulgent dip into a special interest, I'd say the best part of it so far is how moldable it is. I guess the same can be said for most fics, but there's something about DMD that helps it maintain an ever-changing appearance. I can just decide Sun has flower petals for rays now, and easily come up with a viable excuse for why that is. Several ideas which I had prior to the first chapter have already changed just in the few months I've had the AU, and without it losing any steam, because this AU is a gift that keeps on giving and there is so much flexibility at its roots, which I plan to continue taking full advantage of!
Taken Under Wing Okay I know this is going to contradict everything from the last question, but... creating the cult 😂 Everything from the practices, garments, and symbolisms has its place, and the two certainly-not-gods already have associated details planned out, like the specialties and deity specific offerings. It's been a lot of fun!
Something else to mention is the writing style. I have had a blast writing the first chapter of this au already because I've decided to take a more...enchanting approach (dare I use a more provocative word), which is to say that everything feels a little more personal. If my writing for other AUs is warm soup, then this style is rich, melty chocolate. Each word drawn out to be savored. Not sure how else to describe it beyond that so you're just gonna have to trust me on this one.
Thank you for the questions!!

director's commentary for what makes me kind and the cannonball series: your stede and ed povs in both these fics/series are SO perceptive and in character and well done. can you expand on how you tackle the pov writing process/style for both, and what you find most challenging and most fun in writing from each character's pov?
First of all: thank you! I care a lot about doing that well! I think a lot of it is about inputs:
Some of that is on my somewhat bananapants process of writing Hungry for love, ready to drown, which involves watching an episode over and over and over and over again, sometimes in chunks of just a couple of minutes. And every time I do I catch some nuance or detail that I hadn't quite gotten before, plus I think I absorb a little bit of the dialogue style as I go. That ends informing everything else I've written, for sure!
I've just watched a lot overall, not so much the last couple of months, but I am officially in the "has lost track of number of watches" camp.
I've also read a LOT of fanworks: what I can only describe as an unconscionable amount of fic, as well as a ton of meta. And I have opinions and preferences, and I've found myself nudged into different reads over time. I don't write meta, generally, but I find myself incorporating other people's into how I think about and write the characters. (A few people who I would like to give special mention: @chuplayswithfire, @knowlesian, @amuseoffyre, @meanmisscharles, and @triflesandparsnips, which I know is leaving out lots of folks with interesting takes!)
Writing process wise, there's a lot of reading out loud to make sure it sounds right, but also just, I dunno, VIBES?!?!?!
For Ed in what makes me kind (and sort of in can't cross the same river twice), it's "do I feel like my head is full of bees?", while in bad taste in our mouths/twinkle in your eye, I wanted to capture something of the tiredness of his life before Stede. (that one was also heavily inspired by the line "the old Blackbeard would have seen that coming a mile away", which I think is a fascinating bit of insight.) Ngl, anything post-S1 there's also just a lot of my grief feels in it.
And Stede is also lots of run-on sentences, but more like the thought just keeps going somehow? One of my personal criteria for a good Stede characterization in someone else's fic is whether I yell at some point "Stede fucking Bonnet you absolute dipshit", and so if I can do that at my own work then I know I'm on track. For post-S1 Stede, I'm also very consciously aware of trying to work on his growth arc, that he's going to try talking about his feelings, and it's going to be hard, but he's committed to it!
Reading out loud helps a LOT, because then I can hear if the cadence works, and the word choices feel in keeping with how the characters talk in canon. (FWIW, reading out loud is one of those classically great pieces of writing advice in any genre. It's kind of a pain in the ass but I never regret doing it.)
Which, here's the big challenge with Stede, which is also one of my favorite things: his verbal register is all over the place. A lot of people lean fancy, which I think is an easy mistake, and then people complain about how that's not how he talks, but it's not NOT how he talks, either. "Forthwith" and "kick their asses" are in the same sentence. "Sometimes a man has to take responsibility for the things he's done and the people he's hurt" is right before "Calm down Mister Wavy Blade." Getting the balance right is so fucking hard, and when it's right, it feels really good.
Similarly, the challenge with Ed is getting a very specific balance, that I can honestly only describe as "bees but not too many bees." He's so smart and he's thinking about so many things, but again, the trap to avoid is making him too manic (or in grief mode, too maudlin).
Here's a funny thing, actually, about what I enjoy writing each of their POV: I always crack myself up, writing Hungry for love, ready to drown, when I get a bit where Stede is just phenomenally unaware of what's happening, either in his own head or what's going on around him. Something where it's super clear in canon but I'm pretty sure my dude had no idea, yeah? And so that's one of the great pleasures of it, playing with that irony. On the other hand, one of the things I enjoy in writing Ed POV is how much he notices: like in bad taste in our mouths, he knows that Jack is probably playing him, and he decides to see where it goes. So I guess there's something about those two sides as something that I like digging into.
(which is probably a personal thing, but also heavily influenced by all the very interesting posts about unreliable narrators, which is a thing I haven't played with much in my writing over the years, until I started writing for OFMD.)
Thanks again for asking, this was fun to think about, and I may have actually figured out some things about my process that I hadn't considered before. I do run on vibes quite a bit, as a writer.

Hey there,
I’m glad you’re finding your way back to tumblr as well! I’ll take this opportunity to say some nice things I think you truly deserve to read, so I won’t apologise for its length - ‘cause oh hell, I do adore Malevolent!
Thank you for putting so much effort and thought into all the deep conversations John and Arthur have. Those are what got me hooked! Horror is my favourite genre and by now I’ve seen and heard way too many half-assed, cheap stories with 2 dimensional characters. Which, objectively, Malevolent is not. I’m fully on board when they go way deeper than “big scary thing is happening, now shit your pants. Good. Job done, end credits.”
So yeah, horror, relatable characters and Emotions™️? 20 out of 10! It’s not only the occasional “left/right” confusion that just makes me happy (what a neat little detail, by the way) - it’s the fact that when they both disagree, I can’t easily pick a side and say one of them is correct or has a more valid point. You definitely understand your characters and I think that makes Malevolent such a great enjoyable piece. And to my mind, very much a story about relationships and humanity with horror and not the other way around.
I know it’s not easy to incorporate - or even provoke - more feelings than just fear and sadness when writing horror and I think you’re doing an amazing job on getting me on an emotional rollercoaster ride in the best way possible! Yes, thanks for ripping my heart out more than once (affectionate). <3
Oh, and … [insert they got us in the first half meme here] your choice to let their relationship be a platonic one? Super interesting, genuinely. I think I’ve only read about that from another tumblr user pretty recently. I’d be happy to read more about your thought process one day (no pressure, obviously). Because so far we got two outside observations on Arthur and John within the show (from the king in yellow and Kayne) which both to me read as “so they’re in love” at first. But knowing they’re not romantically in love, gave me a very interesting read on “you only have eyes for him” and other wordings media taught us to be indicators for romantic relationships. To see this trope being challenged is really cool, not gonna lie. <3
Anyway, I truly can’t wait to see where this story goes … and can’t wait to cry a little more, too! hehe
P.S: My little sound editor heart is very pleased with what you’re doing there as well! Especially the feet cronch cronch when Arthur’s walking. Love me a good cronch cronch. <3
Well thank you so much! What a wonderful thing to read today. I'm so glad you're enjoying the show and I love that you've picked out specifics to share! Thanks so much, I hope you continue to enjoy! <3

Lowering The Risk
Tumblr media
Engaging in the D/S lifestyle can be an exhilarating journey into the realm of intimate exploration and power dynamics. However, like any adventurous endeavor, it is crucial to prioritize personal safety and well-being throughout the journey. Because the lifestyle presents unique challenges, all of us in and around the lifestyle must keep our safety top of mind, so today let us take a look at a few of the methods individuals can employ to keep themselves safer while exploring the lifestyle.
Educate Yourself: Before delving into the world of D/S, it is essential to arm yourself with knowledge. Understanding the psychological, emotional, and physical aspects of the lifestyle is paramount. Read reputable books, articles, and attend workshops or seminars to gain a solid foundation. A clear understanding of terminology, consent, boundaries, and safe practices is crucial.
Open Communication: Effective communication is the cornerstone of a safe dynamic. All parties involved should engage in open, honest, and non-judgmental discussions about desires, limits, and expectations. This includes discussing triggers, safe words, and health concerns. Regular check-ins are essential to ensure everyone feels comfortable and secure.
Establish Clear Boundaries: Setting boundaries is imperative in the D/S lifestyle. Both dominant and submissive partners should clearly define their limits and preferences. This avoids misunderstandings and potential harm. Honoring established boundaries demonstrates respect and care for each other's well-being.
Negotiation and Consent: Before engaging in any activities, a negotiation process should take place. This involves discussing scenarios, activities, and limits. Obtaining freely given, informed, enthusiastic, and specific consent from all parties involved is non-negotiable. Consent must be ongoing and can be withdrawn at any point, for any reason.
Safe Words and Signals: Safe words are a critical tool to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone involved. These are chosen words or signals that indicate when an activity should cease immediately. Safe words allow open communication even when traditional speech may be hindered.
Research and Learn Techniques: For those interested in incorporating physical activities, such as bondage or impact play, thorough research and learning are essential. Understand proper techniques, safety precautions, and potential risks associated with each activity. Take time to practice and refine skills before engaging with a partner.
Choose Trusted Partners: Selecting partners who prioritize safety, respect, and communication is paramount. Engage with individuals who have a strong understanding of the lifestyle and are committed to adhering to safe practices. Avoid rushing into intimate dynamics without adequate time for building trust.
Emergency Planning: Prepare for the unexpected by having a crisis plan in place. This might include knowing the location of medical facilities, having a first aid kit on hand, and informing a trusted friend about your plans. Being proactive is a key component to mitigating potential risks.
Aftercare: Aftercare is the practice of providing emotional and physical support after an intense scene or activity. This includes comforting, nurturing, and checking in with partners to ensure their well-being. Aftercare fosters a sense of emotional connection and helps in managing any post-activity drop.
Continuous Learning and Adaptation: The lifestyle is dynamic and ever-evolving. Stay informed about best practices, new techniques, and potential risks. As you gain experience, continue to adapt your practices to prioritize safety and the well-being of all parties involved.
Exploring the lifestyle can be a fulfilling and exciting journey, but it is vital to approach it with a strong emphasis on personal safety and well-being. Educating oneself, communicating openly, setting clear boundaries, obtaining consent, and practicing safe techniques are fundamental principles to uphold. By prioritizing these aspects, individuals can embark on their exploration with confidence, ensuring that their experiences are not only enjoyable but also safe and respectful. Lastly, remember the only person who can keep you safe is yourself.
As with all of my thoughts, please see this disclaimer.
