“Dean, stop being a grump,” Sam grumbles. “I know you’re not a big fan of Christmas and parties, but this is getting ridiculous. You’re a grown-ass man acting like an angry child.”

“I just don’t know what to celebrate this year.”

“We had a very successful year. You’re healthy, got a loving family and you still can get your dick up,” the younger brother grins.

“What do you know about my dick?” Dean grumbles. “I never told you about my qualities in the bedroom.”

“Well, the stream of grinning ladies leaving your house tells me all I need to know.”

Dean huffs.

“So, why the bad mood? I thought you wanted to bring Lisa to mom’s infamous Christmas party. At least that’s what she told Amelia.”

“Lisa and I didn’t work out,” the elder brother shrugs.

“Dude, what happened? Not weeks ago, you wanted to move in with her,” Sam gasps at the news. “Did you mess things up? What did you do this time?”

“She wants to try with her ex again,” Dean looks around the large ballroom. “I tried to not mess things up with Lisa and then she goes and breaks up with me not four weeks before Christmas.”

“Fuck, that’s just awful. I’m sorry Dean,” patting his brother’s shoulder Sam sighs. “Do you want me to ask Amelia for her friend’s number? You know the cute redhead you liked so much.”

“No. I don’t want a date for mom’s party. If things didn’t work out between me and Lisa it would’ve been fine with me. But this is just…”

Dean sighs deeply.

“I feel ya man,” Sam nods in understanding. “Do you remember Ruby? The quirky brunette I brought home four or five years ago. She gave me the boot for her ex too. Never heard of her again.”

“Sex with the ex can be fun,” Dean grins. “Did it a few times before too. I just don’t get why they have to try again with their ex while being in a relationship with someone else.”

“I got no clue, Dean.”

The brothers watch the staff twirl around the ballroom to make sure the party will be even better than the last one.

Both men sigh as they think about their past relationships. In not three days they must attend the party but none of them seems to be in the mood.

“Maybe there are things left unsaid and done that won’t let you move on,” Dean wonders aloud.

“I get it... I guess. Don’t get me wrong. Amelia is great but…” Sam clears his throat, “there was something about Ruby making me go crazy. It was the wildest and most animalistic sex. We just clicked on a primal level.”

“Animalistic, huh?” Dean chuckles.

“It wasn’t just sex, Dean. We had a deep connection. I miss the mind-blowing and crazy sex, though. Ruby scratched and bit me. Sometimes she even threw things around the room and jumped at me. Ruby was…she slapped my face, and I held her down…”

Holding up his hand Dean makes a retching noise. “DUDE, too much information,” he mutters. “I really didn’t need to hear about your kinks.”

Sam laughs. “…says the man destroying a bedroom and christening mom’s kitchen counter with Y/N.”

Dean swallows thickly. He hasn’t heard your name for the better of three years.

“It wasn’t my fault,” he says after a moment of silence. “She was a little drunk and one thing led to another.”

“Why did you break up with her again?” Sam dips his head to glance at his brother. “Everyone saw her walk down the aisle to marry you. I never understand you let her go.”

“She wanted one thing, and I was…”

“An idiot?”

“A big grump,” Dean mutters. “That’s what she called me the last time we talked. Y/N wanted me to open up and talk about my feelings. I just couldn’t and then I said something stupid. Y/N told me that she doesn’t want to waste her love and more time on a man ignoring her feelings and I said…”

Dean shakes his head.

“What did you say, Dean?” Sam presses on.

“I said she should stop waiting then…”

“I was right. You were an idiot. Dean, you should call Y/N and tell her you were in the wrong.”

“Who’s in a relationship with a woman he doesn’t want to fuck?” Dean sneers. “If you break up with Amelia and call Ruby, I’ll call Y/N and invite her to mom’s Christmas party.”

Sam stares at his brother. Dean holds his brother’s gaze, challenging him.

“Fine.”

“What?” Dean splutters. His eyes grow wide as his brother gets his phone out.

“I’ll break up with Amelia and call Ruby. Maybe she still has those handcuffs and the riding crop,” Sam bites his lower lip. “That was a night to remember…”

“Wait! What? I was just joking!” he calls after his brother.

“A deal is a deal, Dean. Go and call Y/N…”

“Dean Winchester in all his glory,” you cross your arms over your chest as your former lover stands right in front of you. He mumbles something under his breath, eyes cast down. “I didn’t get that. Why are you here?”

“I-uh,” he shrugs. “Mom is planning this huge Christmas party. You know how much I hate parties. It’s in three days and...”

“I remember…”

“I was wondering if you would give me the honor to come with me,” he scratches the back of his neck. A nervous habit.

“Why would I do such a thing?” you huff. “It’s been almost three years since I last saw you. We are not a pair anymore, Dean.”

“I was a fool and scared back then,” Dean steps a little closer. “I chickened out and you left me.”

“I did not leave you, Dean,” pointing your index finger at him you raise your voice. “You broke up with me. It was you telling me I should stop waiting for you to admit your feelings.”

“It was just a suggestion,” he argues. “You never wanted to see me again.”

“Now it’s all my fault? Are you fucking kidding me, Winchester?” you get louder, drawing your neighbors’ attention. “Why should I even consider talking to you?”

He takes a deep breath. “I love you. I should’ve told you so years ago. No, the moment we met,” he says. “I still got that old photograph of you. It’s the first one I took of you. If only I could turn back time and admit my feelings three years ago.”

“I looked awful. My hair was a mess and I didn’t wear make-up,” you clear your throat. “Why did you never call?”

“I was scared. You know how I get when someone rejects me,” he whispers. “Can I—come in? Maybe we can talk for a while. Please.”

“I wanted to have a beer and ordered pizza,” you glance at Dean. “Do you want to come in? I was about to put up my Christmas tree and could need help.”

“I-of course sweetheart. I’ll help you with pleasure…”

UPIS Math Department holds first virtual Math Week

Mathematics Unites, the theme of the first virtual Math Week celebration, was hosted by the UPIS Math Department from March 14 to 18, 2022.

The celebration promoted appreciation for Mathematics as a unifying language and as a tool in understanding the world and fighting global challenges. In line with this, four programs were announced on the UPIS Math Week Facebook page.

For Pi Day, more than a hundred participants joined the Pi Day Quizziz, a competition held via Zoom at exactly 3:14 PM on March 14. From K-2, they awarded Luccio Pang of K-Sampaguita, Altair Santiago of K-Kamia, and Amelia Obias of 2-Atis. For grades 3-6, Precious dela Paz of 3-Sapa, Zeke Sagayaga of 5-Banahaw, and Reen Lopez of 5-Sierra Madre won the competition. Lastly, the winners from grades 7-12 were Timothy Capulong of 11-Campos, Kirstin Mejia of 7-Jupiter, and Renz Dolorias of 8-Firefly.

Another activity is the Math Scavenger Hunt, a team activity that required students to search for eight items from the list posted on the event's Facebook page. According to Mr. Harold Badilla, Grade 11 Math teacher who facilitated the event, 32 groups of three members joined the game. The members of the K-2 team winner in this activity were Ilenea Amihan Baltazar, Freedom Dioquino, and Chloe Bianca Usi of 2-Mangga while Joaquin Bayuga, Allyssa Sarenas, and James Deximo of 4-Patani won the 3-6 contest. Last but not least, the members of the winning team from 7-12 were Erielle Arceo and Bianca Baguio of 11-Lopez, along with Gabe Matias from 11-Marasigan.

Guess the Number was a challenge for students to count all the candies inside a jar. “This activity warmly received 244 guesses from students,” Mr. Badilla said. Altair Santiago from K-Kamia, Paulo Dulfo from 4-Singkamas, and Justine Catiis from 11-Campos were the winners of this activity.

Finally, Math Museum featured interesting facts about math posted on the UPIS Math Week page every day for four days. The topics included historical mathematicians, math articles, and throwbacks of older UPIS students sharing their math hugot lines.

On March 18, Prof. Angel Rocena, Mathematics department head, hosted the closing ceremony with Mr. Badilla. The latter expressed his appreciation for the UPIS community’s engagement during the festivities. “We are extremely grateful for the active participation of students as evidenced by the high turnout of entries, for the class advisers and subject teachers for promoting the Math Week events, for the UPIS administration for the leadership and guidance, and for the PTA for sponsoring the prizes shared to the winners,” he shared.

Prof. Rocena disclosed that organizing the event was challenging because teachers had to do all the planning, preparing, and executing of the programs alongside their teaching responsibilities. Despite the problems they faced, she added, “Challenging, yes, but we were joyful as we did all those because we know that it would be a fun learning experience for the students, something outside the usual Zoom discussions.”

When asked about next year’s Math Week, Prof. Rocena answered, “Whatever mode of instruction we'd have next year, expect a Math Week around 3/14/23 with new activities that will make you appreciate and love Math more.” //by Ricci Dantes, Andre Panopio, and Jemuell San Jose

Chapter 5 - Rescue You

A Trip to Asgard

Summary: A Sunday afternoon spent at the mall is all Amelia wants for today but her plans get skewed just a bit when a rather inconvenient attack on Asgard occurs.

A peaceful Sunday. That’s all Amelia had wanted was one peaceful Sunday out on the town. It appeared that the team would never get that lucky. The group was spread about the outlet mall which Amelia insisted had something for everyone. She begged them to go, to spend some quality time with one another and relax. She forbade the gym that morning; making everyone sleep in and then cooked breakfast for the lot of them with all their different tastes taken into account.

“I want to have a good day.” She said when they pestered her about her motives. Everyone seemingly decided that they would let her have her way because it was much simpler than continuing to argue. And to her credit, everyone was having fun and relaxing. Loki and Thor had found a small shop with “authentic” relics from the times of old and were making fun of their historical inaccuracy together. The shop owner shushed them every time their laughter bubbled over. Tony had drug Steve into a virtual golf driving range and they were competing with each other for the longest drive. Bucky sat on the side and watched them bitterly, having been disqualified after being caught using his metal arm to increase his swing strength significantly. Bruce had cornered a group of tech geniuses at a Best Buy and was teaching them about how to hack their phones to get endless free content and data. Having picked up Peter on the way, Vision and Wanda were taking him shopping for “proper clothing”, didn’t that young man know how to dress? Was he taking fashion advice from Tony? Amelia, Natasha, and Clint made their way through several different stores together before settling in the cafeteria with slushies and hot pretzels.

Everything was fine, until Amelia caught sight of a TV broadcasting the news.

Three large words lined the bottom of the screen and there was a lump stuck in Amelia’s throat. “Attacks on Asgard”, it read. She put down her pretzel and stood immediately, bolting for the relics store in search of Loki and Thor, when she found them they were holding a bust that was to be of Thor but the nose was hilariously large. They looked up at her as she approached them, breathless.

“Amelia? Are you okay?” Loki’s concern was immediate.

“Asgard,” Amelia got out, “something is happening.” The two men looked at each other before leaving the store with Amelia in tow. They got to the nearest store with a TV and saw the news broadcast.

“It seems that early this morning invaders of some kind landed on the shores of New Asgard and began attacking the citizens.” The newscaster said. Thor didn’t listen any further, he was already out the door of the store and and summoning storm clouds to the area when Loki and Amelia caught up to him.

“Thor, wait,” Loki said, “we will get the team and go together.”

“There is no time to waste brother, our people are in danger, we must go to them.” With his words Thor raised a fist into the air and grabbed onto Loki’s arm, Amelia reaching for Loki’s hand at the last second, just as a bolt of lightning met Thor’s fist and the three of them appeared moments later on the beachy shore of New Asgard.

After Ragnarok Thor and Loki brought their people to Earth and forged a new land, a previously uninhabited island that now boomed with life. They called the land “New Asgard,” a bit obvious if you asked Amelia but who was she to judge? New Asgard was known for its trading systems and the services which the Asgardians could provide, techniques mastered over their civilization’s time which most Terrans could not begin to grasp. New Asgard was a beautiful place, an amazing contribution to society as a whole, which is why Amelia couldn’t understand, couldn’t process what was happening in front of her.

Smoke filled her lungs almost immediately while still on the beach. The small buildings which had sprung up all over the island were up in flames. People immediately ran to the beach when their crown royalty appeared before them. Frantic shouting and pointing toward the island’s center told them where they needed to go. Amelia reached out and placed her hand on several of the citizens, their cuts and bruises faded. She continued the action as she followed Thor and Loki further inland.

“What is this Lok?” She asked in a hushed tone as the hurried along.

“I really don’t know.” His tone showed his anger and the underlying fear for his people. She quickly squeezed his hand before veering off to help another group that looked injured.

She had no weapons of her own so her help in the fight to come would be limited to healing those involved as they went. As they approached the main town square the sounds of destruction rang loudly in their ears. Loki seemed to read her mind and quickly handed two of his daggers he conjured to Amelia before sprinting off behind Thor, it was certainly better than nothing but the wounded were her main concern. Running through rubble and taking care of anyone she could find became her routine. She dragged men away from the fray as best she could and healed them. Their Asgardian blood assisted greatly in the process and she was thankful, if it weren’t for the adrenaline she wouldn’t have a leg to stand on.

Some time later the fighting seemingly stopped, or at least the noise had. The sudden silence made fear spread from Amelia’s core, the ending of the fight had one of two outcomes and there was only one she could bear. Standing up from the man who was no longer bleeding underneath her Amelia began to scan the surroundings for any sign of her boys.

Thor approached first beaming and bleeding and Amelia breathed a short sigh of relief until noticing that Loki did not follow immediately behind his brother.

“Loki is on the other side of that ridge, searching for people to be healed.” Thor brushed off Amelia’s attempts to get to a large wound over Thor’s eye. “Let’s go find him.”

The pair took off running in the direction Thor led. Coming over the ridge Amelia took in the sight of the entire battle for the first time. Rubble covered every square inch of the plaza. No structure stood intact fully. The antagonist was effectively thrown to the side, nothing left to see here type of fashion.

“You said he’s okay right?” Amelia’s strained voice broke through the silence of the pair. They hadn’t found Loki yet and the longer time went on the sick feeling in Amelia’s stomach grew. Catching sight of jet black hair under a golden helmet was all she needed. Her body moved without reservation toward him.

“Loki!” She exclaimed and he turned in time to catch her when she lunged at him. The hug was fierce and she nearly crushed him with her arms, legs wrapped around his waist and he hugged her back just as tightly.

“You scared me,” she breathed into his neck and he laughed.

“My sweet girl, you scared me. You dragged an Asgardian man fifty feet through a fire fight.” She laughed at him in return and shook her head at him as he set her back down on the ground.

“You shouldn’t have been distracted by me,” she chastised and turned to survey the scene around her. Most of the Asgardians were on their feet, helping one another up and healing on their own while a few others approached Thor and told him that they needed his healer.

Amelia quickly obliged and took care of anyone she could find. Loki stayed by her side while she worked to keep a close eye on how exhausted she became, not wanting to let her push herself too far.

“They will heal the small wounds themselves, dear.” He gently reminded her when she was still trying to touch everyone even as Loki practically carried her to a bed, her eyes drooping.

“I’m fine.” She stated as she drifted off to sleep, still fighting Loki’s gentle touch, pushing her shoulder down onto the mattress.

A few hours later Amelia woke up to the sound of laughter and talking just outside of the window. She sat up quickly and took in the room with bleary eyes.

“You shouldn’t watch people sleep ya creep.” Laughing Amelia threw a pillow which Loki deflected with ease.

“I wasn’t watching you sleep. I was simply sitting in a room where you were also sleeping.” The smirk on his face was evident even in the dimly lit room.

“What’s going on out there?” Amelia ignored his taunting and looked toward the window where more laughter bubbled over.

“A celebration, I guess you could say.” He stood and offered hand to her she took it and threw back the covers on the bed before standing. He took her outside where a large fire was glowing and seemingly the entirety of Asgard was gathered around eating, drinking, and enjoying one another’s company. When Loki led Amelia outside she was greeted with many cheers and pats on the back.

“Our true hero!” A voice called from behind her that she didn’t recognize. “Fandral the Dashing,” a blond man offered his hand to Amelia and she took it, “but you can call me any time.” He winked and Amelia blushed under his gaze.

“Get out of the way ya raging idiot,” A much larger man pushed Fandral and offered his hand to Amelia, “Volstagg ma’am. That’s Hogun over there, and Lady Sif!” He slapped the shoulder of a staggeringly beautiful woman who stood at his side, looking over Amelia.

“Amelia,” she said to all of them and smiled. Loki was still standing next to her and exchanged hugs with his friends before turning back to Amelia.

“Let’s get you some food and caffeine, yeah?” Amelia nodded vigorously and allowed Loki to place his hand on the small of her back, leading her toward a table covered with food. “I called the team, let them know what happened and that we were all okay.”

“Good, good,” people kept stopping and thanking Amelia for her actions throughout the fight and she could only insist that it wasn’t any big deal at all and she was sure anyone would do the same. Loki smiled proudly at her every time she responded in that way, knowing that she was special and that there weren’t many people like her, not many at all.

Night had fallen over New Asgard many hours ago but Amelia, Loki, and Thor still remained, listening to the stories of their people old and new. Heimdall shared the stories of a young Loki trying to sneak out of Asgard at seemingly every turn, much to Loki’s embarrassment.

“I am no longer much for running.” Loki admitted to himself more than anyone but Heimdall nodded at him, grinning.

“I know this, probably more than even you.” The man winked at him before letting Thor tell one of his many stories of battle throughout the years. Amelia yawned and rested her head on Loki’s, watching Thor intently while he spoke.

“At least we get to have at least a peaceful Sunday night.” Loki offered before wrapping an arm around her, giving her a squeeze.

Amelia nodded and sighed in content, “And you got to share Asgard with me,” she whispered to her friend, “it’s more than I ever dreamed.”

Loki wanted to correct her, tell her that this wasn’t Asgard, but he paused before he did, looking around at his lifelong friends, his people, everything about the moment which surrounded them and he knew that it was Asgard. Asgard isn’t a place. It’s a people.

ezra savage --- american ambassador, soon to be retiring. generally a playful, fun man, very personable and agreeable. it’s what made him such a good diplomat and father. he was a thunderbird when attending ilvermorny, where he met his wife.

hara savage --- former wampus!!! tiny and fighty and very very loving. a huuuuge spitfire. currently back in the states to help her sick mother.

damaris savage --- baby sis!!! was honestly the sweetest, most fun young girl. big dreams and even bigger imagination. she was a 22, a junior healer --- one of the ones who were killed during the siege, actually. surprise!!!!!!

childhood.

ALRIGHT SO the savages are actually an american pureblooded family!! though blood status typically didn’t matter as much in the states as did the way ezra made his way up to earning the title of AMBASSADOR. diplomat. emissary. whatever ya wanna call it!!

though the savages were also a later branch of the highly regarded ROCHE family, of the original twelve aurors, due to one of the women in the family marrying a savage.

alisa was born in 1949 america, which with all things considered, really wasn’t that long after the ordeal with grindelwald. but it was also 1949 in the united states, so the red scare was going strong when she was born, which was an entirely different sort of witch hunt than the one her wizarding community grew to know

with the red scare as a guise, there were some lingering anti-wizard people who used it as an excuse to go after wizards. again. but this time by saying they were communist spies!!!

she grew up in a wizarding world that wasn’t AS sheltered and concealed since the disbandment of the new salem philanthropic society just over two decades before.

the savages are spread all across the united states wizarding world, but this particular branch of them was fairly small and tight knit and centered right outside of new york city. much of alisa’s first eight years was spent bouncing back and forth between their home in new rochelle and the city.

after working as a translator for years, and growing from there, ezra finally reached a point where macusa and the president announced him to be their consul for the united kingdom’s wizarding world. this was v exciting for the family!!

so when she was nine, not long before she would have started her education at ilvermorny, the savages relocated to LONDON. fun!!! (sort of)

living on the wizarding world’s equivalent of embassy row and getting to witness this level of the government working was fascinating. her life from then on took the form of galas and exploring london with her mom (and eventually newborn sister, who was ten years younger than her) and mother and sitting in on some debates and discussions regarding foreign policies between the different countries.

a lot of political shit, but it also really shaped alisa?? it made her very interested in the mechanics of the government, and exposed her to how things WORKED. both in the ministry and macusa. it also displayed both groups’ PROBLEMS to her.

when she was 11 she was shipped off to hogwarts!!!

her parents didn’t want her on a different continent while they were still working in england, so after some discussion with headmaster dumbledore, she was brought on board

sorted into slytherin!!! her personality was essentially highlighted in slytherin, where her fire and drive and goals were celebrated, though her american background did receive its own criticisms. for the most part, hogwarts were some of the best years of her life --- she was a member of too many clubs to keep track, a keeper for the slytherin team, a top student, and incredibly social w/in her peers. sure she could be a bit.......biting sometimes, but overall she was v sociable.

then to now.

so after graduating from hogwarts, she went straight into the auror academy!!! though she was good at playing the social realms of politics, it was never quite as much her speed as what the aurors did. even back in the states she had practically idolized the men and women with these jobs, so it was no question what she wanted to do.

a very ambitious and determined woman, she fought and worked her way higher and higher up through the department as years passed. there was always that unspoken struggle of being a woman in a male-dominated field. but she was damn good at her job!!!! sometimes a bit of an annoyance to her peers when she would fight back on some decisions made on cases, but it’s bc she has a fucking backbone boiiii

so as she went from junior auror to senior and everywhere in between, she gathered respect. enough of a reputation as well, to be promoted to head of the auror office in january of 1980 at age 31. she is the third woman to hold the position and ALMOST the youngest, but not quite

she’s a workaholic so since her promotion you can catch her at the ministry even MORE these days

she loves her job though, and is v v committed to getting things done through the right means. off the clock she’ll do anything to get the job done, but when at work she’s v big on ensuring everyone follows rules and protocol when it comes to cases. she doesn’t need shit being thrown out the window bc someone didn’t go through the right channels or was a dumbass and did something out of line. they’re going to do it the right way dammit!!!!

oh okay right and the ORDER i need to talk about that

so basically she joined near the start of the war?? she was around 22/23 and a v fiery, excitable new auror who had a tendency to push her luck and speak impulsively when she shouldn’t have. but it was enough to get the attention of dumbledore and his small order at the time, so she was RECRUITED

Ever go to an event where all the cars were the same color?

When cars and trucks are being produced, there is an early stage known as the “body in white.” The phrase applies to completed body shells as they head into the paint shop for color to be applied.

Perhaps taking the concept of “body in white” a giant step further,

Guglielmo Miani, who heads Italian fashion brand Larusmiani, thought it would be great fun to stage a road rally, but only for cars wearing white paint, and thus the inaugural Fuori Concorso was held in the California desert early in 2020, with a second was later in the year on the Italian island of Sardinia.

It’s not unusual for red cars to dominate at Ferrari events, or black cars at a Model T club gathering, but what would you think about staging a car show or driving event exclusively for cars of a certain color?

Or here’s an alternative: A car show where cars are parked neither at random nor by marque or model or model year, but by color?

British Motor Show launches robot competition

Did you miss World Recycling Day? It was held recently and the British Motor Show used the occasion to launch a Car Robot Competition as part of its “Crazee Creations” category.

So how does it work?

“The Car Robot Competition will see showgoers able to create their own battle-style robots using old car parts, ahead of the show, to fight head-to-head in an arena, which will form a central part of the Show’s Crazee Car Corner, where you will find the weird and the wonderful, from monster trucks to modified cars,” motor show organizers announced.

“Participants are invited to design their very own robot, static or mobile, using recycled car parts. The robots will then be judged for style and creativity before a winner is announced… Teams are invited from schools, colleges, companies, or just groups of friends and individuals.”

The show’s Crazee Car Corner will feature a display of “modified cars, mental motorbikes, oddball caravans, upcycled automotive art and extreme machines. If you like the unusual, you’ll love the Crazee area.”

“The British Motor Show is about cars of all ages, shapes and sizes – it’s a celebration of cars in all their forms and the Crazee Corner is where those are taken to the extreme” said Andy Entwistle, the motor show’s chief executive. “That makes it the perfect place for visitors to create their own car robot creations and let their automotive imaginations run wild – and there’ll be some cool prizes on offer, too.”

Beaulieu’s ‘Simply’ shows launch May 23

The 2014 Volkswagen XL1 was a diesel-electric 2-seat hybrid vehicle. Only 250 of the $130,000 vehicles were scheduled to be produced

British home computer producer Clive Sinclair also produced 1-person electric-powered tricycles called the Sinclair C5 but sold only 5,000 of them

The British National Motor Museum at Beaulieu opens its series of “Simply” car shows on May 23 with Simply Electric, a showplace for electric and hybrid cars and motorcycles and bicycles.

Organizers are particularly interested in any vintage electric vehicles and in classics that have been converted to electric powertrains.

The event will be the first of 15 such one-marque or one-type of vehicle shows scheduled to be staged this year at the British museum.

2 Jet Z Hot Wheels car set for Carlisle Imports show

2Jet Z won the national Hot Wheels competition held at the 2018 SEMA Show in Las Vegas | Larry Edsall photo

2 Jet Z, a home-built creation that became a Hot Wheels toy, will be among the vehicles featured May 14-15 at the annual Carlisle Import & Performance Nationals at the Carlisle Fairgrounds in Pennsylvania.

Built by Luis Rodriguez and powered by 630-horsepower version of the 2JZ engine from the Toyota Supra, the car looks like a fighter-jet cockpit on wheels. In 2018, the car was selected as a grand national champion of such full-scale Hot Wheels cars and was shrunk to 1:64 scale to become a real Hot Wheels die-cast toy.

In addition to 2 Jet Z, Rodriguez will show his newest creation, Scorp*lon, a car inspired by one of Syd Mead’s vehicles in the movie Thon.

The Import & Performance showcase also will feature a Volvo celebration, 20 years of the Honda K-Series, 30 years of the Toyota 2JZ engine and 50 years of Opel Manta.

Forest Grove concours postponed

The 48th annual Forest Grove Concours d’Elegance has been postponed until July 17, 2022, the organizing committee has announced. The event is held on the campus of Pacific University, which has become a coronavirus vaccination site.

I used to love playing pretend when I was a boy. My sister and I would spend hours dreaming up impossible scenes to play in; dinosaurs, spacemen, anything you could imagine, we would come up with.

That’s what this has felt like- playing pretend. I don’t mind it, personally. Given all that has happened, it’s a bit nice to see my two dearest friends get on and enjoy a short break from solving crimes and dealing with Moriarty.

It’s just, unfortunately, the problem with playing pretend is that eventually your mum has to call you in for dinner and you’re thrown back into reality.

“And what?” Amelia challenged a laugh on her lips, teacup in her lap and watching John in amusement. “You’re opening the present or so help me John Watson, I’ll tell Mrs. Hudson.”

The doctor lifted the bundle of perfectly wrapped boxes tentatively, giving the smallest one a shake.

“It doesn’t feel right,” he continued, and Amelia sent him a pointed look.

“I opened mine,” Sherlock commented, arms crossed, leaning back in his chair.

“You did?” John gaped at his friend in disbelief. “When?”

“A few nights ago,” Amelia waved her hand, not wanting to go into detail about her complete meltdown that first night. “And Mrs. Hudson opened hers yesterday. Just open it!”

Mrs. Hudson was gifted an all-expense paid spa trip to Bath with the three ladies she played cards with each week. The housekeeper had practically screamed with excitement, pulling Amelia into a tight hug, thanking her profusely before making phone calls to set up a date.

It was nice to have a bit of normal.

“Fine,” John grumbled, opening the first box.

All in all, he loved his gifts.

Two cashmere sweaters in navy and merlot, and an original 1st edition of Grey’s Anatomy.

He set the book aside and pulled Amelia into a hug, and even though he tried to blink away the tears in his eyes, she definitely saw them glisten.

No one mentioned the lapse in time often. Only when Sherlock was working on the case did he pepper he with questions. John talked about it even less, which was sweet, but no matter how much Amelia tried to pretend things were ok, she was still reeling from it all.

The Christmas decorations had come down after the New Year, leaving the apartment sparse when she returned, having left with it covered in lights and tinsel. The days were easing into February, while she was still waiting for January.

She’d started therapy the day before, at John’s insistence. Twice a week for the foreseeable future. The hope was that the sessions would unlock whatever secrets were hidden in her subconscious.

More than anything, though, she was tired of everyone looking at her like she was this fragile thing, waiting to shatter at the lightest touch.

She’d been home a little over a week now, and it was getting old. Amelia wasn’t one who did well with coddling.

Even her mother had become almost unbearable. Constantly calling and texting.

The only person she had the energy to deal with was Sherlock. He was careful not to overstep his boundaries, but also read her like a book when she was uncomfortable.

He’d insisted on accompanying her anywhere she wanted to go, including the shops when she decided to pick out a new winter coat.

It was nice.

Amelia had always enjoyed spending time with both John and Sherlock alone, but while John felt like an older brother, Sherlock gave her butterflies whenever he spoke.

Greg had been sweet enough to avoid calling him in unless absolutely necessary. And on the one occasion he did, Sherlock made sure Amelia was left with Molly at the hospital. Safe and secure while he and John went to the crime scene.

Otherwise, Sherlock was always at her side. But it wasn’t as smothering as anyone else. He didn’t nitpick and ask her how she was feeling or fetch her things because he pitied her. It was a natural presence, a little protective, but safe and warm.

Amelia had no problem falling back into old routines, sketching by the fire while Sherlock read and John worked through a crossword. It was what she needed.

Nighttime was the only thing that had changed drastically.

Ever since that first night in her room, Amelia and Sherlock had spent every night together, alternating between beds.

The first night in his room, Amelia had burrowed her face into his pillow, much to his amusement, trying to guess the elements of his cologne.

“I’ll never tell,” he teased when she listed a few common scents.

“I will figure it out,” she vowed.

And she did. He didn’t bother hiding the bottle and a quick google search revealed a blend of pine and light jasmine.

It certainly didn’t account for the smell of firewood, old books, and wool that seemed to be all his.

Neither of them had tried to name whatever this had turned into. There wasn’t “I love you’s” or kisses in the morning. They never had sex.

It felt like an entirely natural progression of things, granted, with the underlying context of kidnapping and memory loss. But Amelia didn’t mind. She was happy. Sherlock seemed happy. That was good enough for her.

She wasn’t so naive to assume that this would last forever, either.

They’d discussed it extensively, lying awake next to one another and dissecting potential plans that Moriarty had for the future and a grand reveal was the first idea they’d agreed upon.

It was coming. She didn’t know when or how, but it was.

Amelia just wanted to enjoy this little slice of joy that they had as long as she could. They could name things and have serious talks about the future, later on. For now, she was content in this vacation-like bliss.

“10... 9... 8...”

It was a small get together, Ruthie, Greg, Molly, and the residents of Baker Street, but it meant the world to Amelia.

John had pulled up a video of the New Year’s Eve celebrations, Mrs. Hudson had pulled out hats and noisemakers, and the plan was to count down until midnight.

“..2...1! Happy New Year!”

Laughing, kisses were peppered onto everyone’s cheeks. When Amelia passed Sherlock, he linked his finger with hers, giving her a small smile when she glanced curiously in his direction.

Turning around, she pecked a kiss on his cheek, tapping the tip of his nose with a finger, before returning to the others.

More than anything, Amelia wanted to grab him by the shoulders and kiss him like she meant it. But they hadn’t even discussed their unspoken thing or shared the first kiss at all.

So, she held her composure and sent him smiles whenever he looked in her direction.

Greg and Molly left after Mrs. Hudson announced that she needed sleep. Ruthie was offered Amelia’s bed, but the women stayed up in the flat with John, splitting a bottle of gin and laughing next to the fire.

“Christ, I needed this,” Ruthie leaned her head back, resting up against Amelia's legs hanging from the sofa.

“No kidding,” Amelia murmured, taking the bottle from John and taking a large swallow. Making a face and handed it to Ruthie. “Gin. Awful.”

“Gets better the longer you drink it,” John voiced, sprawled over his chair.

“Tastes like a liquid pine tree,” Amelia grumbled.

“I bet you like rum or whiskey,” Ruthie held up the bottle to John.

“Bloody Americans,” John rolled his eyes. “Terrible taste in everything.”

“I don’t want to hear it,” Amelia fell back, throwing a pillow over her head for effect. “Deep-fried Oreos are the shit.”

“Deep-fried... Oreos?” Ruthie poked her in the leg, the gin bottle making a return. “I love Oreos.”

“They’re like, deep-fried in pancake batter,” Amelia explained, popping back up. “It makes them all gooey and amazing.”

“Holy shit,” Ruthie paused. “We need to make some.”

“Not in my kitchen,” Sherlock threw blankets around the room, snagging the gin from Ruthie and taking a sip for himself.

“Sher...lock,” Amelia slurred, putting emphasis on the final “k”. “There are eyeballs and a human tongue in the freezer.”

“We can make Oreos,” John held up a hand.

“Deep-fried Oreos,” Amelia clarified with a wavering finger. “A very important distinction.”

“You’ll burn the flat down, no,” Sherlock countered.

“Not right now,” Amelia laughed. “Silly Sherlock. We don’t have Oreos.”

“Which is a tragedy,” Ruthie complained, stealing back the gin and finishing what was left. She grabbed a blanket and wrapped it around her shoulders like a cocoon, tackling Amelia onto the sofa. “I’m glad you’re not dead.”

“Me too,” Amelia snickered, pressing a sloppy kiss on her cousin's cheek.

“Ugh, gross, you slobbered on me,” Ruthie dropped back, wiping at her cheek in disgust.

“You got emotional, consequences,” Amelia gestured above her, hand swaying while she examined it in the air.

What Sherlock first noticed was the way Ruthie stiffened at the sight of the vicious scarring and scabbing on her cousin's wrist. The second thing he noticed was the way Amelia went quiet when her drunken focus fell on the injury.

John let out a snore and Sherlock jumped up.

“Bed,” he announced, earning a chorus of complaints from Amelia and Ruthie. “You’ve both had plenty to drink. Happy New Year, bedtime.”

“I’m not moving,” Ruthie announced, curling up on the sofa, making it as difficult as possible for Amelia to crawl over her.

“Enjoy John and his snoring,” Amelia stumbled over the edge of the rug and caught herself in the doorway between the living area and kitchen. “Mmmm goodnight!”

“Don’t be loud!” Ruthie called once Amelia and Sherlock rounded the corner to his bedroom.

Sherlock had to redirect Amelia a couple of times, helping her navigate the hallway without smashing her head or breaking anything. She dropped onto his bed with a long sigh.

“What?” he stood over her, brow quirked.

“I think you’re right,” she answered, eyes opening to look at him. “Your bed is the best.”

“I’m never wrong,” he answered, dropping next to her with a soft thud.

“So very humble,” she rolled toward him, amusement in her eyes. “You’re the humblest guy I know, Sherlock Holmes.”

He turned his head to better see her, his chest hammering once he realized how close her face was to his.

Was this the right time? They’d both had a bit to drink and he didn’t want to escalate things to an inappropriate level until they were sober and-

Amelia pressed her lips against his, her fingers threading their way through his curls.

He pulled her closer, hand cupping her cheek while he reciprocated in turn. It felt like everything the movies and books he’d read about said a kiss was supposed to be.

His brain felt like it’s erupted in fireworks, and the rest of his body-

“Oh,” he pulled away, clearing his throat. She leaned on her elbow, watching him try to adjust his pants.

“I didn’t mean to get you all fired up,” she smirked up at him. “I feel a little powerful right now.”

He turned to her, scowling at her words. Cruel. She was being mean and enjoying it.

If he half a mind- nope. Gentleman. He was a gentleman and he was going to change into his sleeping pants and go to sleep. He announced as much, stood up, and locked himself in the bathroom with a change of clothes until he pulled himself together.

He stared at his reflection, hands gripping the sides of the sink. Gentleman.

If things came to that, he’d make sure it was right.

Groaning, he threw his night clothes on and returned to the room.

Amelia was on her back, snoring loudly, having only managed to change into an oversized shirt.

Running a hand down his face, Sherlock pushed her aside and threw himself onto his side of the bed.

Amelia rolled onto him, arms snaking around his waist and her hips against his.

Gentleman.

“Mrs. Peacock, in the library with...” Amelia shuffled through her notes. “The rope!”

Sherlock lowered his hand and smirked.

“Nope,” he replied, popping the “p” and earning a fresh scowl from her.

“What do you mean, ‘nope’? You didn’t even open the packet,” she protested.

“I told you not to play him,” John mumbled, turning the page to his paper. “It never ends well.”

“It was Mrs. Peacock, and it was in the library,” he contended before flipping a card with his fingers. “But it wasn’t the rope.”

“But- you-,” Amelia scrambled through her notes and cards. “Impossible. Because then if you have the rope it had to have been the pistol.”

Sherlock handed her the envelope and with a litany of curses, sure enough, Mrs. Peacock, in the library, with the pistol.

“How did you...?” she stammered. “I didn’t... my cards...?”

“You touch the pieces you have at the beginning of the game,” he pointed out, lifting the tiny candlestick. “Unconsciously, of course, but you do. It’s an endearing tick, but sufficient to win.”

Amelia threw her cards into the game board, gaping at him in shock.

“I told you,” John sang, folding his newspaper. “You would have been better at Monopoly or Life.”

“I just...” Amelia shook her head, lifting the three cards from the envelope again. “I’ve never lost at this game before.”

“It is easier when it’s only two people,” Sherlock tried to offer but she shook her head.

“No. This is-,” she sat back into the sofa with a sigh. “I’m going to have to think about this. Restrategize.”

“It isn’t chess,” John chuckled.

“No, this is far more serious John,” she looked up at him firmly. “I’m going to beat him.”

“Good luck,” Sherlock mumbled and she whipped her head in his direction.

“I’m going to. And you’re going to eat humble pie, accepting that I, Amelia Ophelia Brenner, am better than you at something,” she announced, hopping to her feet.

“You’re better at painting than I am,” he suggested. “This is a game based on observation and deduction. You can’t win.”

“That’s why my victory will be all the sweeter,” she poked him in the chest with a grin. “Just you wait.”

“When shall I send out the wedding invitations?” John asked the pair. “I picked a lovely periwinkle card stock you’ll love.”

“I think a summer wedding would be nice,” Amelia paused. “Find a little church in the countryside. Wildflowers everywhere.”

“Allergies could be risky,” John replied. “Wouldn’t want to be sneezing on your wedding day.”

“Ah, but I assume you’ll be best man, so I would hope you’d be on hand wut Jaime antihistamines?”

“Of course,” John nodded solemnly. “Assuming Sherlock hasn’t taken them all first.”

“I would have accounted for allergies,” Sherlock piped up. “The insects would be my primary concern.”

“Bees,” Amelia pointed out in agreement. “I’m actually very allergic.”

“So we’re back to allergies,” John said.

“I know you’re allergic,” Sherlock looked at Amelia. “Which is why I renewed your epi-pen after it expired two months ago. I’ll make sure both John and myself have a backup.”

Amelia’s hand went to her chest, eyes wide, with a small “aww”.

“Clearly we’re going to have to bump the date up,” John snickered. “A nice spring wedding?”

“Rain,” both Amelia and Sherlock replied in unison.

“Also periwinkle is nice, but what about a yellow?” Amelia hummed in thought. “Or a tasteful navy with pastel pinks?”

“You just want to cover the tables in peonies,” Sherlock snorted, fishing for his phone after it chirped with a new message.

“Is that so wrong? They’re incredibly good luck for marriages,” she sighed dreamily.

Sherlock ignored the comment, reading over the short message from Mycroft a few times, just to be sure he understood it correctly.

Moriarty turned himself in.

And just like that, the fun was over.

He looked toward Amelia, who was giggling with John over fictional seating arrangements, wrapped-up in Sherlock’s robe.

This was the part he’d been dreading. The game was on, and Amelia was back on the board. This last week being so peaceful for them all. The last tease before things became messy.

Sherlock had no doubt that by the end of this Amelia would know full well what had happened, and that terrified him the most.
