Oh man I was scrambling trough tumblr tag and I saw this LB quote about Aleksander: "The Darkling is beautiful, I wanted to create a leader who was charismatic, appealing, a dictator you could imagine yourself following, an antagonist you couldn't just dismiss. [...] The Darkling is beautiful and broken and had a rough childhood, but he's also a brutal, manipulative monster with no regard for human life. He's dangerous because he's seductive, because he evokes sympathy.

…I just don’t even know when to start with this? Can she come off as anymore ignorant and offensive by trying to sound so woke. I mean “beautiful and broken”?! Are you kidding me?!

(Book Spoilers. Trigger Warning: Trauma and Mental Health)

Hmm well I'm not sure you could really sum it up as a 'rough childhood' more like a rough life filled with alot of trauma that has left him isolated and struggling to form human connections. Also I'm not sure I like the term monster for someone who is made the way they are through trauma and also the line about him having no regard for human life is just false he has lines he wont cross which is why he didn't harm the grisha children in book 3 and he was never going to because he values their lives. To be honest though I had some issues with the way LB dealt with trauma and mental health in the books. Not just with Aleks either but with Sergei too, actually I found the way she treated Sergei and his mental health in the last book rather appalling. Sergei is established as being severely traumatised by losing Marie to the point where he struggles to function properly. I think out of all the characters in the trilogy he's depicted as having the worst trauma, all the other characters have bad dreams and what not but Sergei really does find it debilitating and he struggles with day to day tasks like eating, sleeping and even just walking/travelling takes its toll on him. But Alina's attitude towards Sergei at times was troubling. To be clear though I'm not blaming the character for this as it was just the way she was written but she seems to consider Sergei weak and his mental health a hindrance. Here are some extracts from R&R the first is right after Sergei accidently revealed Genya's real name to Nikolai:

I shot to my feet. “What happened?”

“Sergei let her real name slip. He seems to be taking to heights about as well as he took to caves.” I released a growl of frustration. Genya had played a key role in the Darkling’s plot to depose the King. I’d tried to be patient with Sergei, but now he’d put her in danger and jeopardised our position with Nikolai.

Sergei was nowhere to be found. Probably a good thing, since I didn’t have time to give him the pummelling he deserved.

And like I understand that this must have been a frustrating situation but Alina knows that Sergei is struggling with his trauma and that he didn't mean to cause anyone any harm. I can understand her frustration but I really don't like the line about the 'pummelling he deserves'. I just don't like the suggestion that a person who is clearly suffering from a mental health issue deserves to be punished for making a mistake because of his trauma. Here's another instance where Alina is annoyed at Sergei:

Sergei had slowed us during our fight with the militia. He was unstable. I could apologise, offer useless words, but I didn’t know how to help him, and it didn’t change the fact that we were at war. Sergei had become a liability.

Again I get the frustration but again I have issues with the suggestion that because they are at war Sergei should just pull it together. Or even this image that's being painted that people who have mental health issues are just a burden on those around them. People in real life who suffer with similar mental health issues like depression and anxiety often worry about feeling like a burden to their loved ones so this could be really triggering for them. Then there is this from Baghra:

“We came to find you. What’s the matter with that boy?”

“He’s had a hard time of it,” I said, leading them away from the tank room.

“Who hasn’t?”

“He saw the girl he loved gutted by your son and held her while she died.”

“Suffering is cheap as clay and twice as common. What matters is what each man makes of it."

This one really troubled me because its like LB is saying that you can control your own trauma or decide how the trauma is going to effect you. It's again this suggestion that Sergei is weak because he struggled with his trauma more than others did. But the part that actually kind of disgusted me when I read it and I actually had to stop reading the book for a bit because of how much it upset me is how the characters talk about Sergei after his death. Alina had sent Sergei away because she felt he had become a liability and he then went back to the darkling and told them all the information he had on Alina and co. This move was obviously one born of his trauma and was made out of desperation. On several occasions Sergei has said he is struggling with feeling safe and no matter how hard he tries he never feels safe. Alina even tells us that Sergei had gone back to the darkling looking for reassurance and safety which really makes sense, this man grew up at the LP the one place where grisha could be safe, he grew up under the protection of the darkling. Then he chose to stand with Alina and went through the trauma and grief of losing the woman he loved horrifically in an attack against the LP which was his original safe place. He then never feels safe again so it would make sense for him to go back to what previously had made him feel safe, the LP and the Darkling. But this is what the other characters say about Sergei after he is killed by the darkling:

I sat beside him, unsure what to say. I remembered sitting like this with Sergei in the tank room, searching for words of comfort and failing. Had he been scheming then, manipulating me? His fear had certainly seemed real.

Abruptly, Zoya said, “I should have known Sergei couldn’t be trusted. He was always a weakling.”

Though that seemed unfair, I let it pass.

“Oncat never liked him,” Harshaw added.

Genya fed a branch to the fire. “Do you think he was planning it all along?”

“I’ve been wondering that,” I admitted. “I thought he’d be better once we got out of the White Cathedral and the tunnels, but he almost seemed worse, more anxious.”

Abruptly, Adrik snarled, “I’m glad Sergei’s dead. I’m just sorry I didn’t get to wring his neck myself.”

Steel is earned. Adrik had that steel, and so did Nadia. She’d proven it again in our flight from the Elbjen. A part of me had wondered what Tamar saw in her. But Nadia had been in some of the worst fighting at the Little Palace. She’d lost her best friend and the life she’d always known. Yet she hadn’t fallen apart like Sergei or chosen life underground like Maxim. Through all of it, she’d stayed steady.

And yes again I understand why they feel betrayed but they knew that Sergei was struggling and instead of understanding that Alina is accusing him of manipulating her and Zoya is saying he couldn't be trusted and that he was a weakling. To be honest it kind of reminds me of the way people talk about the darkling. Instead of recognising their trauma and trying to understand they jump straight to well they were a bad, untrustworthy person who was manipulating me.

Then there is the last part where Alina is thinking about how Adrik and Nadia are strong because although they faced trauma they were able to keep going and keep fighting but not Sergei, Sergei was crippled by his grief and his trauma and this means he was weak. Maybe its because I have struggled with crippling mental health issues myself where I couldn't even get out of bed let alone do anything else but I just found this implication that Sergei was weak really offensive to those who do struggle that way. People deal with trauma in different ways and whilst some people can fight through it and will just have a keep calm and carry on attitude others can't, others just fall apart, but that doesn't make them weak. I also don't think this 'just carry on and push through it' attitude towards mental health issues is necessarily a healthy message. If you need help then you should ask for it and be able to have access to it. LB could have used this as an opportunity to show a character who is severely traumatised getting support and help to work through his trauma and heal. But I feel like nobody really helped Sergei and any comfort or support he got seemed to be grudgingly given and there was more of an attitude of I'll try to help you because your issues are a hindrance to me than because any of the characters actually cared about him and wanted to help him.

Sergei and the Darkling were both characters that were 'beautiful and broken' but neither one of them was given the support or help they needed. Instead they were painted as either weak or as a monster. So what kind of message does this send to readers who also struggle with trauma and mental health conditions?

A little guide on ao3 (by an ao3 user and writer)

Friendly reminder for mobile users! Ao3 is a website. It doesn't have (as far as im concerned) an official app for mobile, so better get comfy with using crome on your phone.

i really reccomend coley's videos if you want to get to know more fandoms, or get an inside look to how some stuff works. There also might be more vids about fandom's and fan works, so don't hesitate to look through some of her stuff!

So, what is Ao3 really?

Ao3 is a website made by fans for fans. There are no ads, and all content is free on Ao3. Anyone can post (with some age restrictions) and they can post anything.

How can I browse Ao3?

Ao3 does not require an account to view stories. You can easily browse as an anonymous user. You just are not able to view certain works, as creators have the ability to show their works to registered users only. Some cases, commenting is possible while anonymous, but again, it's up to the creator of the work.

If you want to be a creator and share works, you need an account.

An account also gives you the ability to bookmark works, so you can re-visit them, mark works for later, keeps a history of the works you've visited and allows you to favourite tags.

How do I get an Ao3 account?

When you first open the site, it gives you the option to "Get Invited". An invitation will be sent to your email anywhere from 24hrs later to a week later, depending on the amount of people in the automated queue.

After the invitation, you are able to set up your account like any other social media account. Pick a username, pseuds (name), description and bio. You can have a profile picture as well.

How do I navigate the site?

There are few ways to do so efficiently, but there's countless of ways you can experiment with to find which is more comfortable.

1st option: As the website loads, you can go to the 'Fandoms' tag.

Then, after clicking on it, this column appears. Through there, you can pick which media your fandom is from and from there, browse the huge list of different fandoms until you spot your own.

The list is in alphabetical order, so if your fandom begins with an "C", it shouldn't be too far down.

2nd option: At the top right, under your profile, and the options 'Post' and 'Log Out' should be a white oval search bar.

(im using my own account for demonstration)

When searching, there are many ways to work around it.

Personally, I press search as it is. It will lead you to a page where all the fanworks of the site are listed. (i believe its easiest, but always feel free to experiment)

From there, you press the 'Edit Your Search' button, located near the top right.

It will then lead you to a page with multiple fields.

Don't panic when you see all the fields. Only half those are of interest when you want to browse works for a fandom.

The most important ones are those under the Field name 'Work Tags'

Whatever you select under this field will be included in the works the site presents you with.

What are the work tags? What do they do?

Lets go through the options.

Fandom(s): when typing on this option, multiple fandom names will autofill in a list under the white space. If your fandom shows up, you can just click on it.

From there, you can select the fandom you want to see works from. If your fandom doesn't show up, it can mean one of two things:

-there are no works for it

-it isn't popular enough to be picked up by the algorithm

After selecting one fandom, you can select another fandom, or more, to see works that are crossovers over universes.

Ratings: Ratings are selected by author. It defines the level of maturity it has in the work

- General audiences is the tag you want to use when nothing bad happens in the work. No swearing, no sexual activities, no violence or gore. It wont contain scenes that minors are not allowed to see.

- Teen and up audiences is the tag used for most works on the site. It is what would be used when you have mentions of/vague sexual content or violence. Normally, the most extreme stuff on there is excessive swearing, heavy angst and hurt/comfort with no excessive details

- Mature is the tag that is for 18+. It is mostly filled with one of following : Violence, Sexual Content, Ab*se, R@pe, Death and SH.

Reader descretion is advised by looking at the additional tags the author has provided, especially for those with triggers.

- Explicit is like Mature, but contains more graphic content. Works rated explicit mostly fall under the 'Graphic depictions of sexual content', 'Graphic depictions of Violence and Gore' or 'Graphic depictions of Ab*se, R@pe, or Self H*rm

Reader descretion is advised, stronger than mature, since it can be much more triggering. The works are scarily detailed sometimes.

- Not rated: the author has not given this work a rating because none of the other ratings fit the work. Pay special attention to the tags.

Warnings: Also known as Archive warnings by older users. The trigger warnings of Ao3. There are 6 archive warnings:

-Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings: The author didn't use the warnings, either because none of them fit the work's theme and warnings, or to avoid spoiling the story. Pay attention to the tags for any warnings.

-Graphic Depictions Of Violence: It is pretty self explanatory. Can contain any sort of violence, from wars, to simple fights, to ab*se of any kind. Can and often contain death. The type of violence is in the tags.

-Major Character Death: A main character in the story will die in this work. Pay attention to the tags always. The name of the character will be mentioned, as well as the way they die.

-No Archive Warnings Apply: None of the warnings apply. It is most times a perfectly safe work. Check the tags to make sure though!

-R@pe/Non-Con: The work contains non-consensual activities. Ranges from non-consensua sex to non-consensual use and ab*se of substances. Very close attention to the tags!

-Underage: The main character(s) in this work are underage/minors. This is normally tagged along sexual content so be aware and pay close attention to the tags!

Categories: This regards the relationships in the work:

- M/M, or better known as mlm or a relationship between two non-woment (men mostly, can include characters under the non-binary umbrella)

- M/F, a heterosexual relationship (is inclusive of trans characters too!)

- F/F, or wlw, or a relationship between two non-men (women mostly, can include characters under the non-binary umbrella)

- Gen, no sexual or romantic relationships are in this work, or if there are any, they arent of main focus.

- Multi: Polyamorous relationships, or multiple relationships are included in this work (this is also where threesomes+ are tagged in sometimes)

- Other relationships: One of the two people in the relationship is non-human (mostly), or the relationships are platonic/family.

Characters: The characters you want to be included in the story. This works just like the 'Fandom' filter, so the same things apply. You can tag as many characters as desirable.

Relationships: The relationships that you want present in the work. This includes both major and minor relationships. It can also include ended relationships (tagged Past x/y) and implied/referenced relationships. This works just like the Characters and Fandom filter.

Additional Tags: These are things the author has included to give potential readers an insight to the story. 'Angst', 'Fluff' and 'Smut' are additional tags. Works like the Relationships filter, so all same applies.

Is there anything I have to avoid/ I should avoid?

There is this very infamous tag, 'Dead Dove: Do not eat.' This tag is a warining to readers that the things in the work are really messed up, and can include anything illegal in it. PAY VERY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE REST OF THE TAGS IF YOU STILL ARE INTERESTED.

How else can I filter works?

You can choose how they are:

sorted (Titles, Authors, Hits, Kudos, Comments, Bookmarks, and Best Match)

the word count (from 1 word to millions)

the language (most are on there)

the amount of chapters

if the work is complete of not

when it last updated/when was posted

and if there are crossovers.

These are all options that author has to include, and therefore you can sort freely. Most are bulletin options you can click on.

What if I want to find a specific work?

If you happen to know one of these: Author, Title, Fandom or Rating, you will find it. If you were reccomended one, it's better to ask for the author or the title, to make looking for it easier.

Can I find a specific author/ user?

People search is for finding users on the site

Bookmark search helps you look through other people's public bookmarks. Not really used.

Tag search finds works that include this specific tag you searched. Also not used a lot.

People can see my bookmarks?

When bookmarking a work, you are able to do a lot.

if you do not want your bookmarks to be visible to the public, make sure to check off the Private bookmark box at the bottom left.

Common terms thrown around by Ao3 users:

-tags: the additional tags of the work

-kudos: liking a story

-bookmarks: saving/saved stories. makes it easy to revist. you can see your bookmarks from your profile

-hits: the amount of people that have clicked on a story. Isn't necessary they liked it, but they did click on it.

And those are the basics! If you had to take one thing only, its ALWAYS READ TAGS

heyo ˙˚ʚ(´◡`)ɞ˚˙ omg i love ur account, ur literally my favourite person on this app sfngnbodmv ur posts make me so happy. basically i want to start writing drabbles and fics and stuff so i was just wondering where 2 start & how u got started :)

hi! aww tysm :,) that means a lot!

well, i started by making a post asking people for requests (as i started as a request writing page, not really that way anymore because it’s easier to not get burnt out for me if i do the stuff i genuinely want to write!) and i used all of the tags i could.

(if youre planning on doing mha writing, bakugou and todoroki content generally does the best. the first 3 tags you use, your content will show up under tagged when you search the tag in specific, so i suggest doing bakugou x reader, todoroki x reader, and whatever else as your first three for your starting request post!)

if you aren’t planning on doing requests, i suggest maybe an intro post. like “hi! i’m (name) and im a writer! here are the fandoms i’ll be writing for, and a few things about me!”

try and have your first writings be consistent, it doesn’t matter that much but it’s good to have content for ppl to read rather than literally one post and it’s an intro. if people see the intro, they will prolly click on your account to see your writing and such. so, imo it’s important to have some writing to begin with

i’ve noticed, that using more tags doesn’t necessarily = more notes! the first few matter the most, and after that, it can help to do the category and such

let’s say i wrote a bakugou fluff. i’d use these tags: bakugou x reader, bakugou imagine, bakugou fluff, bakugou katsuki, mha bakugou- give or take a few! you can find examples under my MOST RECENT writing posts, as i did different experiments with it and the more useful your tags are the better. my “if you came into their room in the middle of the night” post was the experiment, and it turned out that i was right, more tags ≠ more interaction

on that note, INTERACT WITH PEOPLE. this isn’t against anyone who doesnt like interacting, but it can help build relationships with followers! if you’re comfortable with this, you can open your asks box so people can say stuff (you don’t have to have anons on but it can be nice for ppl who are shy/dont want their acc out yk)! if you get anon hate, just block the anon if you want. or dont respond.

also, it’s rlly cool to get a few mutuals! i’d love to be your mutual if you want to, just lmk your account whenever you start posting! sometimes i make mutual posts asking for mutuals, you can do something like that if you would like

my first ever oneshot thing i wrote, was one i rlly remember writing! that might not be the same for my viewers, but i usually remember someone by the first thing i’ve seen by them. first impressions matter, so try and figure out how you wanna be seen! ofc don’t fake being someone you’re not, but it might be confusing to ppl if your first impression doesn’t match with how you act the rest of the time!

your first post usually sets the tone for your blog, or at least the first one that gets you your audience. if you, in your first post that gains you followers, say that you’ll be writing for danganronpa, and then instead write for mha, everyone would kinda be like. what? i thought you were a danganronpa writer??? ya know

BE SURE TO INCLUDE GENERAL TRIGGER WARNINGS ON POSTS THAT NEED THEM. ADD THE TOPIC ITS WARNING ABOUT TOO. EVERYONE WILL APPRECIATE IT BECAUSE IT IS JUST A NICE THING TO DO PLEASE DO THAT!!

i suggest making a navigation page (like my pinned post) and a masterlist (you can do all your writing in one or even seperate masterlists for each character, whatever you’d like)! it can really help to have a spot to go and be able to find all of the writing you’ve done without endless scrolling! if you need a tut on how to add links to posts, im sure theres a tut on youtube!

A REALLY HELPFUL THING TO DO IS WHENEVER YOURE MOTIVATED WRITE LIKE FIVE THINGS SO WHEN YOU DONT FEEL LIKE WRITING, YOU HAVE POSTS! fr tho, ppl usually wont mind if you arent super active. if they do, theyre being dumb!

posting consistently CAN help your posts reach more ppl, but if you can only post every now and then, it isnt really a problem! don’t stress it if you’re too busy/dont have a schedule, it wont kill your account

tl:dr;

-add trigger warnings on things when needed

-make a navi page (not needed)

-if you’re motivated, write stuff to post later

-first impressions matter

-mutuals!

-less tags can work more, but i’ve also seen a lot of tags work good as well

-INTERACT WITH PEOPLE

-don’t say you’ll do things just for followers. they aren’t just a number, they’re actual people

how i started in five steps:

1. i made a post that was like “hey! im mack and i want to start doing writing requests! do you guys have any?”

2. i did a few posts then was like ah fuck i need a masterlist, so i made that and then made an about me with random facts i thought of and such. (also make sure tou put your pronouns in your bio so ppl arent confused!)

3. i did more posts and started gaining, but didn’t really mind it. i kind of just vibed, cause the numbers dont determine how good of a writer you are, so i focused on working on my writing style and such! i kinda ghosted the whole blog for a week straifht beside from queued reblogs, but came back later when i had inspo! it’s good not to run your brain dry

4. i redid my whole blog, made it pretty! its rlly motivating to me to have a nice blog, but it isnt required! i made an organized navigation page, and started focusing on getting my reach back. (btw, prime posting time is at like midnight!) be sure to put rules and boundaries on your page as well, so people do not end up crossing one that you didn’t state.

5. i reminded myself that i can do things other than my blog when i’d get a little too obsessive over it, and that it wasn’t going anywhere! don’t feel pressured to post a LOT. only post when you want to and can. don’t put responsibilities like health aside just for your blog.

Authors Note: now this has a lot of stuff in it so if you cannot read this i totally understand so i put all the writing under the cut so you would have to see anything if you didnt want to. i am so sorry anon that you again had to go through something like this. its not easy and is so terrible and heartbreaking, my heart is with you in these tough times. if you need to maybe read this with somebody near by you, maybe a friend or adult if these trigger you. If you need to as well talk to someone pls do, call the hotline and talk with a trusted person. if yall dont have that you guys can whenever talk to me about whatever i am here for you 24/7 no matter what.

He touched you. You didn’t want it. It wasn’t love and it wasn’t normal. He didn’t listen to your cries; your screams; your protests. He didn’t leave you alone or move. He knew you didn’t want it, him, but yet he chose to keep touching you.

You crouched by Bryce’s closet; sobbing into your hands. Your mascara dripping down your face and landing on your carpet. Your lips quivered as you replayed what happened moments before.

You had gone to Bryce’s house to finish a project you had with him. You didn’t really know him so you were not worried. As you entered into his house you then started to have an unsettling feeling. He was alone and it was just you and him.

“It okay y/n. I’ll take good care of you,” he would say to you. Feeding your expectations of him and lying to you. “This is normal. I know you want this.” He whispered into your ear as you tried to push him off. He was greedy and selfish not caring about you. Now you understood why Hannah killed herself.

After Bryce took advantage of you he pushed you off like a piece of trash. Like you were an object instead of a person; a woman. Thoughts raced into your mind as you thought of the way his hands pinched and hurt your skin; leaving bruises littered all over your body.

It was hard to stand up. You were shaking. You looked beyond the doorway and noticed he had left somewhere else. With everything that you had you sprinted to his window. Unlocking the hinges made a noise and you heard Bryce yell.

“Hey what the f*ck are you doing?” He screamed as you heard his footsteps near you.

With everything that you had you unlocked the window and opened it; jumping out. You ran down the street away from the monster.

Bryce saw you leave. His eyes squinting as he licked his lips. Proud and satisfied with what he did to you. Drinking the last bit of alcohol he had in his cup. He had to make sure you didn’t say a word; that you kept your mouth shut.

You ran like he was still behind you; never looking back until you reached home. Your parents were out of town for the week so you truly did feel alone. You locked your doors and fell into your bed; crying. You sobbed into your pillow. You felt the innocence drain out of you. Your trust in people disappear.

“Why me?” You groaned as you felt sick to your stomach. The moments, the feeling, the words, smell, taste, everything never leaving you. It was as if it was engraved in your mind. You wish you could forget it; leave it. Dig it up somewhere far away. You remembered every second of it.

You wanted to call Clay; your best friend but you were afraid as to what he would say. Afraid he would want to start a fight with Bryce. Maybe even afraid he wouldn’t believe you. You stared longingly at his number on your phone; wishing he was here with you.

“Clay you haven’t seen y/n, right?” Jessica asked, lifting a piece of paper to show him that they have a science project to do together. “I haven’t seen her in like forever.”

Clay licked his lips. Trying to remember the last time he did see you. Its been a while. You hadn’t gone to school in about 3 days already and Clay was worried about you. “Yeah, you’re right. I haven’t seen y/n at all actually. Maybe she went with her parents.”

“Well I just wonder because we we’re supposed to go over this yesterday.”

“Maybe she’s not feeling good. I’ll pass by her house today.”

After school Clay got on his bike and rode off quickly to your house. A part of him felt at ease and another felt worried. What if something happened to you? He would not be able to live with himself knowing two of the most important people in his life had something bad happened to them. Hannah and now you.

“Y/n!” Clay said as he motioned over to your door. He rang the doorbell and waited. His feet tapping gently against the cement floor. “Y/n open up please!”

He looked at his phone and noticed you never texted back all those texts he sent you. Concerned, he started knocking then knocking turned into pounding. “Y/n I said open the God d*amn door please!” Clay walked back and was about to run into the door but you opened it just in time.

“Clay! What the f*ck?” You asked, surprised. You were wrapped up in your pajamas. Your face all gloomy looking and not kept up with. You looked like you hadn’t seen the sun in ages as your eyes squinted at the light. You looked like a mess. “What do you want?”

Clay thought it was odd that she was acting fine when he knew something was up. “I just, you didn’t come to school today or the other days and I just wanted to check up on you.”

“Well you did and I’m fine.” You tried closing the door but Clay stopped you, putting his hand out.

“Y/n, whats really going on?”

You bit your nails as you looked down; trying not to cry. “I’m fine really. Now just leave me alone.”

“No, I’m not going to. Y/n you’re pretending. You’re pretending to be okay when you’re not. I know somethings up. You usually text me and you didn’t this time. You usually tell me everything and now you’re keeping sh*t away from me. What the f*ck is going on?”

“Its him okay!” You cried out, rubbing your forehead from the pain increasing there. “It was...him.”

“Who’s him?”

You looked left and right outside and brought Clay in by the sleeve. “Clay...Bryce...Bryce did stuff to me.”

Clay knitted his eyebrows and placed his hands on your arms. “What do you mean y/n? What did Bryce do?”

“He,” tears started to poor from your eyes. “He sexually assaulted me Clay. He did things to me that I didn’t want. I said no Clay. I said no.” You sobbed harder as Clay brought you to his chest. Your face pressed against his chest so you could hear his heart beat quicken.

Clay’s face reddened as he became so angry. All he wanted was to protect you and now you were hurt. “I am so sorry y/n.” He was so irate that he couldn’t search for the words at the moment to help soothe you. He just let you cry into his chest as he patted your back.

“Clay, he took that piece away from me. That piece of myself. I wanted to tell you this for a while but I like you Clay, a lot. You are a good guy, you’re kind and sweet and you’re always making sure I’m alright but now I can’t be with you. I’m wasted. I’m disgusting. I’ve been touched and I’m vile now. I’ve been spoiled. I’m a wasteful mess.” You fell onto your knees as you cried into your hands.

Clay was so shocked. He never knew you felt that way about him. He also got on his knees and brought you onto his lap, rocking you as he embraced you. “You’re none of those things. This is not your fault, this is Bryce’s. He will pay for what he has done I will make sure of that. As for you, you are more than enough. I don’t deserve you. You are strong to have gone through this. You are powerful. You will achieve and make it on top. I am here for you y/n. I will make sure no one ever touches you again. You mean so much to me y/n. You are perfect in every way. I love you for the woman you have become. You are incredible. Don’t let him take control of you. You did not deserve this but you do deserve happiness and love. If you want me I am here for you.” Clay kissed your knuckles as he soothed you on the floor, tears dripping from his eyes as well. “You mean so much to me and so much to others in your life. Just know that. I’m here for you y/n, I am here for you.”

- You’d been in love with Sherlock Holmes. And wasn’t that just the worst decision of your life? -

-When the Great Sherlock Holmes smashes your heart into a million pieces, you think you’ll never be able to get over it. But maybe, with some help, you’ll be able to get even? -

"I trusted you!"

The words caught briefly in your throat, spilling out on a choked sob as you stared at the man you thought you knew.

You’d met Sherlock a little under a year ago, and his gentle nature and breathtaking intelligence had pulled you in. What had started out as friendship quickly grew into more, with the consulting detective taking the lead. Initially you’d been wary, you’d heard rumours...but you came to know the real man behind the fame.

So you thought.

Your whole body trembled as you looked at him, the man you'd thought could be trusted. Your arms crossed tightly against you as though that could stop the pain ripping through your chest.

"That was your mistake."

He wouldn't even look at you, the great Sherlock Holmes. He stared dispassionately out of the window, arms relaxed as he held them at his sides. His entire demeanour was cold and uncaring, though his eyes, when they flicked briefly to you, held a quicksilver spark that you’d only ever seen directed at criminals he was about to take down.

You knew he thought you were stupid, compared to him everyone was. But you weren't. At least, not as much as he thought. You knew him, his body language, his habits. That's why you let the argument die on your tongue. You knew he wasn't sorry.

His back was ramrod straight and a muscle in his jaw ticked, and you braced yourself for that inevitable pain to come. You knew him. You knew he wouldn't let you leave, not without telling you how he used you so easily.

A single sob punched its way past your throat, the pain of it causing you to hiccup as the tears finally began to relent.

"So trusting. I knew it the moment I saw you; the ease with which you gave out your smile, your laughter, how quickly you could be lured into conversation with anyone who gave you the time of day. So desperate for companionship that you'd sacrifice every facet of your personality if it meant that someone would just like you."

"That-thats not true." Your protest was weak, you weren't that desperate, not enough to give up being who you were...

"Of course it is. I've seen your browser history, your bookshelf. Anything I've ever mentioned having an invested interest in, you've researched. To make yourself seem smarter? Possibly, but my money is so that it would seem as though we had things in common, things that would make me want to keep you around."

You began shaking your head, staring at him. He hadn't moved, not an inch, yet his chest was rising and falling faster and faster as he continued. You knew this version of him, when he was following a thread of thought that was leading to a conclusive point, one that he was desperate to reach.

"The truth of it is, as you've discovered, I needed you for a case. Needed to get close to you so that I could get close to someone else. Your unwavering loyalty to your 'friends' meant that you were the perfect target. I needed you to get to Natalie, I needed to get to Natalie's work computer to find the illusive trail tying her to the distribution of illegal, experimental drugs. Drugs she sold to violent gangs, which these gangs then used to murder people. I needed an in."

He finally, finally, turned to look at you. And you wished he hadn't, the icy disinterest in his gaze killed you, as if he were looking at a stranger.

"And there you were. Lonely, lovely...desperate."

"Stop it." you whispered, backing away, towards the door. Perhaps he'd let you leave. You knew the killing blow had yet to be delivered, but perhaps, just once, he'd show mercy.

"I knew I didn't need to worry too much about a physical relationship, not right away at any rate, though we did get there. No, you're touch shy, something that was clear to me from the start. Happy to stand close, eager to initiate contact when intoxicated - probably also touched starved, but jumpy when touched whilst sober. Undoubtedly the result of some past abuse. I knew from scrolling through your social media that I was physically your type. I knew that being gentle and sincere would make you trust me, but maintaining my own natural aloofness would make you eager to earn my trust. You'd be drawn in."

His deep voice rolled across you, hypnotising despite its cruelty, despite the way he was eyeing you as if you were some mildly interesting insect under a microscope.

He began pacing the room, long legs making short work of the distance as he ran a hand through his long hair, ruffling it. The only sign that this was effecting him more than he let on.

"I knew that by reaching out to you regularly you'd conclude that I must genuinely like you, that if I was the one to always initiate contact there'd be no risk of you pulling away for fear of annoying me. I knew that after a few months if I turned up at your practice before closing, under the guise of waiting for you, you wouldn't find the act of doing so strange, in fact you'd find it sweet. After a few weeks it'd become so regular that you'd offer to let me wait in the staff room or an office, somewhere in the back of the practice rather than the public waiting room. This would allow me the access I needed to snoop through the files and computer systems, finding the evidence needed for my case."

You'd closed your eyes at some point, heart pounding against your chest as you listened to him explain in excruciating detail just how he'd used you. How easy it had been for him to manipulate you.

"I'll admit, I didn't foresee the practice firing you for letting me in, but that can't be helped."

Your eyes flew open. Though they still stung with tears, a new feeling burned its way through your chest. Rage.

How dare he use you.

How dare he stand there, he face blank, as if you were some stranger.

How dare he make you fall in love with him.

"You ruined my life." your voice trembled, anger and horror warring within you as you stared at him, his face an icy mask, "You ruined my life, for a case?"

"Don't be so dramatic." He scoffed, rolling his eyes and turning back to the window. You felt dismissed, but you knew he wasn't done. You knew that he knew how this would go, what you'd say. And you knew that the final word would be his, and that it would be devastating. You knew you should leave now, but you couldn't, you were helpless against your own emotions. Helpless to do anything but follow his script.

"I loved you."

His eyes flicked in your direction, and you searched them desperately, hoping there'd be some emotion hidden in their depths. There wasn't.

"I know. Just as you'll love the next person who smiles at you."

You stared at your phone screen, finger hovering over the button that would send the message to Sherlock. Your note. Your confession. But like a coward you held back, knowing that once it was sent, it couldn't be unsent, and that if you didn't go through with it you'd look even worse.

And what if he replied? What if he replied before you jumped? What if he was cruel? What if he wasn't? What if he took it all back? What if he took it all back just to say he only did so to stop you from jumping?

What if. What if. What if?

He'd once taken you on a tour of his "secret London", all the places that could act as short-cuts, all the places that could help with clues. All the places that very few people knew about. You sat in one of those places now.

It was a tunnel, old and abandoned. It was almost impossible to see from the outside, unless you knew exactly where to look. You sat, backside going numb against the cold stone, your legs dangling over the edge of a small crumbling wall that lined the length.

The tunnel covered a river, a particularly nasty offset of the Thames. The narrow, winding tunnel held deep, roaring waters, and with no ladders, falling in would almost certainly be fatal. The cover meant it was never warmed by sunlight. And the force of it caused the current to be fast and strong.

You weren't crying now. It had been two weeks since Sherlock had ended things with you. Two weeks since he ruined your life and broke your heart. Nowhere would hire you, not with your previous workplace dragging your name through the dirt. Your career, everything you'd ever wanted, was over.

You'd thought about what he'd said, over and over. Was it true? Did you latch onto him because he was nice to you? Was none of it real, not even from you? Were you really a fake, who'd give up every little piece of themselves to get someone else's affection?

You didn't know anymore.

"Nasty fall, that."

The voice made you jump. It was soft, high in pitch, and almost mocking in a casualness.

"No-Nobody was meant to be here." You stuttered, stuffing the phone with its unsent text into your pocket.

"Ahh. Well, don't let me keep you."

The man was attractive, he sauntered over to lean against the wall next to you. Looking into the water below, he hissed through his teeth, face pulling into a grimace.

"That wont be at all pleasant. But oh well, its your life. Well...for a little while anyway."

You felt his eyes on you as you leant forward, breath coming faster as you watched the swirling mass beneath you. You felt it beckoning even as your mind screamed to move away.

"Or..." He sang, voice suddenly too loud. You jumped, nearly slipping into the water as you scrambled for purchase on the wall.

"You could get revenge."

"What?" You asked, frowning.

"Oh comeon! He took everything from you! Your job, your friends, your heart. Are you really gonna give him your life too?"

His chocolate eyes bored into you, his face losing it previously cheerful appearance to stare at you. His face was hard, unreadable, and almost...terrifying.

"I can help you." His voice was soft, light, it drew you in. You felt yourself leaning towards him.

"I can give you purpose again. And I promise you this...I will use you. But you will always, always, know I am doing so. I'll never lie to you. Together, we can watch the world burn around him."

You felt your heart beating wildly against you chest again, but this time with excitement. It had never, not once, crossed your mind that there was a way to get even with Sherlock. The idea of taking him on was ludicrous. But looking into this mans eyes, this man who reminded you of him in so many ways, made it seem possible.

You were surprised to find that you wanted it.

"Tell me how." You said, voice ringing with a confidence you hadn't heard in weeks.

As a smile stretched across his face, wild and insane, you couldn't help but match it with one of your own.

"First, I think you have a text to send, Poppet."

- Body found in Thames. A body, identified to be [y/n] [y/l/n], was found on the bank of the Thames this morning. Though the damage caused by the water made identification difficult, dental profiles confirmed the identity of [y/n] [y/l/n]. [y/n], formerly a [Y/J/T] at a prestigious London [Y/J/N], was recently involved in a drugs bust scandal. The PI Sherlock Holmes used [y/n] as an informant to bring down several gangs, who were using drugs from the clinic, which were being provided by another member of staff at [Y/J/N]. [y/n] was fired after the investigation for negligence in regards to private information being leaked to Mr.Holmes. It has been reported that Mr.Holmes received [y/n]'s suicide note through text, but has refused to comment. -

One year. It had been a whole year since Mr. M found you. Since he'd helped you fake your death and start over.

And oh, what fun you'd had.

In your time with Sherlock, you'd thought criminals were scum of the earth. But you'd been so wrong.

You'd never felt more free. It hadn't taken long for you to become Mr.M's right hand. Your innocent facade and eagreness to please - things Sherlock had mocked you for - were the very things that made you so valuable to him. You could infiltrate anywhere. You could learn enough about anything you needed to get by in any company.

Empires had fallen at your feet, and they did so whilst singing your praises as an employee and friend.

You knew Mr.M had been planning something, something big, just for Sherlock. Another thing you had in common. A total, all consuming lust to make Sherlock dance to your tune.

He'd never lied to you, like he promised. He used you, for things that often put your life at risk, but he always told you he was doing so.

You trusted him to be a criminal mastermind, ready to throw you under the bus at any moment, and he trusted you to get the job done.

Which is why you were here, cuffed to a table in the depths of Scotland Yard, waiting to blow some minds.

When Greg had first seen you, he'd hesitated upon recognising you. Precious moments that you could have used to get away, but that wasn't part of the plan. It would have been a waste of a hospital if you'd not allowed yourself to be arrested.

He'd not said a word, just staring at your in quiet anger and horror as you sat in the interview room. You were both waiting; you knew he'd called Sherlock and John. You smiled at him, and he flinched. You used the same smile he'd always seen you with; small, shy, head tilted as you looked up at him from under your lashes. Friendly and a little embarrassed. You held back the threatening giggles, your varying smiles were your best weapons, and you hit him point blank with that one.

The door opened with a clang as Sherlock and John stormed in, Mycroft following at a more leasuirly pace. They both froze at the sight of you. Alive, healthy, and grinning like a maniac.

Mycroft narrowed his eyes in annoyance as you sent a wink his way, you'd known he'd be livid that you'd faked your death well enough to fool him.

"Hello boys!" You sang. Just the way you'd rehearsed. The way Mr.M asked you to, because you both knew with those two words, Sherlock would know everything.

"How...but, you died [y/n]. We saw...and the text...what..." Sputtered John, but you only had eyes for Sherlock smiling slightly as you watched him figure it out.

"Moriarty." His voice was exactly as you remembered, deep and rumbling. And for a brief moment you allowed yourself to feel pleasure at hearing it again.

"Got it in one, aren't you a clever boy?"

"You worked for Moriarty?" Spat John, horrified. You tutted.

"No John, I work for Moriarty. There is a slight difference."

"Tell us everything." Sherlocks voice was commanding, and you grinned while you shook your head.

"You know better than that, Sher." His eyes flickered at the familair nick-name, and you smirked.

"Ask me nicely." you crooned, leaning forward on the table to look into his eyes.

"[y/n]," said John, "We know how Moriarty works, we can help you get away from him..."

"And why would I wanna do that? Mr.M is the best thing that's ever happened to me."

"Mr.M?" asked Sherlock. It was a little disconcerting, the way he stared, the way he wasn't moving.

"Friends have nicknames, Sher. Remember? Mr.M loves it, we all have nicknames now."

"And what, exactly, is your nickname." Asked Mycroft. You knew he had a list of all of Mr.M's known associates. You also knew most of those names were nick-names with no physical descriptions.

"Oh, he's always called me Poppet. Ever since he found me on that wall."

Mycroft choked on air, staring at you with wide eyes.

"Mycroft?" asked Sherlock, not taking his eyes off you.

"'Poppet' is the code-name we found for...Moriarty's right hand. The problem with the senator in America? The House of Commons incident? The scandal in Africa? All of it was traced back to 'Poppet'."

“I don’t know about any of that. But today she...she blew up a hospital!”Greg struggled to get the words out, his face red with anger as it became too much for him.

He slammed his hands against the metal table, and you didn’t even flinch at the aggression in his eyes.

“Do you know how many people you just killed?” he spat.

“35.” You said. You tilted your head, looking into his eyes.

“20 minutes before the bomb went off, a fire alarm was pulled, and all but a few patients were evacuated. The 35 remainders were comatose, on life support, and just generally on the brink of death. I may be the assistant to a sociopathic, psychopathic, criminal mastermind, but I have retained some of my morals.”

Greg threw himself backwards, crossing to the other end of the room to get away from you. His face ashen and his eyes angry. You shrugged.

"That couldn't have been you..." sputtered John, "You're too...too.."

"Nice?" You ventured, "Kind? Friendly? Eager to please? Desperate? Stupid? Pick one." You giggled.

"All this time..." Sherlock muttered, "Why did he send you to get close to me?"

You stared at him in shock. Your eyes wide and mouth open. You couldn't believe it, he was an idiot...

So you laughed. Until your sides ached and tears streamed down your face.

"Oh you, you poor thing!" You sputtered, "He never sent me to you. I didn't know him until after you."

He frowned, and you sighed, deciding you may as well spell it out for him.

"You broke me, Sherlock. Your oh so precious case, the one you decided was more important than someones life? Ring any bells? You used me, and then you broke my heart. But was that enough? Oh no. Thanks to you, I was totally discredited, no one would hire me anywhere. I lost my flat, my friends, everything, because of you!" Your voice had risen to a shout, as you could finally show him what he did to you.

“And as for you two,” you turned, spearing Greg and John with a heated glare, “Judging me for what I’ve become? Really? Where were you when I was ready to jump? Where were you, my so called ‘friends’ when Sherlock tossed me aside? You were standing with him, staring at me with sad eyes, and then turning your backs on me too.” You spat the words, letting a years worth of bitterness out.

"I was done. I went to the tunnel without a name. I was sitting on the wall, ready to send you that text, ready to jump. When...he showed up. And made me realise, you'd taken everything from me, and I'd be damned if I was gonna let you have my life as well."

You sat back, rolling your shoulders.

"So we faked my death. And everything you saw as a weakness, he saw as a strength. Oh, compared to him, and you, I'm a barely evolved ape, but he recognises my intelligence, my loyalty, and he values it."

You flicked your eyes around the room, finally allowing your true face, Poppet, to shine through. The grin stretched your lips wide, your eyes danced with crazed mirth, and you speared Sherlock with your gaze. Tilting your head, you raised an eyebrow as you spoke.

"We've been planning Sherlock. The Great Game is only just beginning. And we are all gonna have so much fun."

These are just many of the many creative job search tactics that you can employ to discover a job. You can probably think of a number of more tactics honestly in case you just stop and consider it. Setting up a SIP intercom system with Cisco 79xx Phones

So a while ago I purchased some old Cisco IP Phones from an office that was clearing out its old stuff. I was interested in setting up some phones around the house as a kind of internal intercom system. After a week of fiddling and finding out whatever info I could about the models I had my hands on (7941, 7942, and 7962), I finally have them calling each other and working with FreeSWITCH.

I also managed to get images appearing on the screen too! Nifty! Other images I put together for other phones can be found here.

Another great thing is it also breathed some life into my old android phone too - it’s now a wireless intercom, using CSipSimple. Combined with an audio loopback on my PC, I can stream my desktop’s audio straight to a conference call using MicroSIP - now I can afk and still be listening to podcasts, talks, etc...

I certainly learned new skills, and a little about how this phone stuff works!

(Feed Your Inner Techician: For more info on some things I learned in setting this all up, read on below)

I certainly had a bunch of pages to look through, though some provided more useful info than others - I can’t remember all of them haha. But I’ve put a list of some useful links for anyone who’s interested.

Note that this is by no means a complete guide! It’s just some useful info I learned, and I’m also writing it as a means to consolidate the stuff I came across. :)

Key things in my set up:

Something that works as a SIP Server (i.e. FreeSWITCH, or Asterisk both open-source).

Software SIP Client(s) (such as CSipSimple (Android), MicroSIP (Windows), Linphone (cross platform, mobile and desktop versions available) - I used MicroSIP for Windows because it’s portable/no installation required)

Hardware SIP Clients (Cisco 7962, 7942, and 7941 IP Phones) - mine didn’t come with power cords as they were Powered over Ethernet and none of my devices supplied PoE, so I got some random, no-name PoE Injectors I searched up on eBay.

(Only for the Hardware SIP Clients) A TFTP Server such as Tftpd32 (or Tftpd64, which is the 64bit version), which will be sending configurations to the Cisco Phones when they boot up.

Tftpd32/64 and Cisco Firmware Files

This little standalone program serves out things like the firmware files for the 7941/7961 or the 7942/7962 phones. They also have the firmware for various other models too.

This is also used to serve out the configuration files to the phones - In my googling about configuration files, I learned that some models use a .cnf extension and format (which is older, I think), and others use an XML format.

Fortunately the configurations for the 79x1 and 79x2 both used the XML layout for their configurations, so I didn’t need to pick up 2 config layouts/structures, though I suspect they would follow a similar structure/pattern.

Tftpd and its DHCP setting

I recall a few guides I read on getting Cisco SIP stuff set up saying that you’d need to turn on Tftpd′s DHCP feature, as well as setting something like option 150 and providing an IP address in Hexadecimal...

For some reason I couldn’t get that working (then again, the posts were like.. 2009? to.. something like 2013?), and the phones weren’t getting IP’s set from Tftpd’s DHCP service.. so I just used my router’s DHCP service instead - in its settings it had a field labelled “TFTP Server Name (Option 66)”, once I filled that in, the phones managed to connect and download their firmware (I was using v9.2.1).

Initially these were using Cisco’s “SCCP” protocol, which I think both FreeSwitch and Asterisk both support, but by the time I figured that out I already had put the SIP firmware onto the phones already. :P

So.. Apparently I didn’t need to use Option 150? Not sure why, but it all seemed to work. Just something to keep note of if you want to try and run into a similar problem even if you follow the guides out there which talk about using option 150.

Cisco 7941/7961, 7942/7962 Configuration Files

I found that the Tftpd server’s logs show that the phones require multiple files when they boot. This list doesn’t include the firmware files and therefore assumes the firmware is already loaded on the phone.

(Note: If the phone receives a configuration which defines a different firmware version than what it has previously loaded, it will fetch it from the TFTP server and flash itself anew. Otherwise, I’m pretty sure if it times out for whatever reason, it will continue to boot to the last firmware that was loaded on it)

The files it seems to ask in the Tftpd log are

CTLSEP<Phone’s MAC Address>.tlv

ITLSEP<Phone’s MAC Address>.tlv

SEP<Phone’s MAC Address>.cnf.xml

dialplan.xml

What I’ve found is that CTL relates to a “Certificate Trust List”, according to this article from Cisco. The phone seems to function fine without it (for SIP at least, dunno about SCCP), and I ended up just making a blank file in the TFTP server’s folder to avoid seeing “Error file not found” logs coming up.

As for ITL, I couldn’t quite figure out what that was - maybe another Trust List? Since I couldn’t get info on it in a reasonable amount of time, I ended up just making a blank file for that too - haven’t seen any problems coming up from this either. :P

The last two, (the XML ones) are probably the main things that affect the phone’s functionality in my case, since the SEP<MAC>.xml file contains all the configuration info such as the SIP server’s location (eg: an IP Address), ports, preferred codecs for calls, auto-pickup feature, speed dial buttons, text that shows up on its screen, extension, authentication, and plenty of other things.

This article at Brain Overload > SEPXXXXXXXXXXX.cnf.xml nicely documents a lot of settings in the XML file. Definitely bookmark or save if you want to tinker with the settings and want a reference.

I just tinkered with settings for a while until I got something that was working in terms of display and whatnot. One thing I couldn’t figure out for days was why they wouldn’t “register” with FreeSWITCH. Phones need to “register” to the SIP Server so that when someone calls an extension, the server knows ‘where’ to forward the call stream to (i.e. IP address, etc.). If a phone doesn’t register, a caller gets sent straight to Voicemail.

So during these troubleshooting days, I was able to do the following:

Make calls from the phone (eg: calling Voicemail, trying to dial an extension, dialing 9198 and hearing Tetris music streamed back from FreeSWITCH, etc... the FreeSWITCH log/window shows it’s all working.

Leave voicemail for an extension

Call voicemail and successfully retreive/play back voice mail for extensions

I just couldn’t receive calls - FreeSWITCH’s logs shows “Originate Failed. Cause: USER_NOT_REGISTERED”, which also coincides with the phones constantly showing the status “Registering”.

Turns out it had to do with the section in bold below (example code from Brain Overload)

For some context on this section, “<sipLines>“ starts the section that defines the different front buttons to the right of the screen on the 79xx phones - and is required for the phone to function.

All the guides that were top hits in my googling always had an IP Address in the <proxy> tags. Makes sense, of course - Line 1 will talk to the proxy at whatever address is defined there.

Days later I found that another valid entry can be placed in the <proxy> tags:

<proxy>USECALLMANAGER</proxy>

So a lot of examples I saw out there in guides I would see this section, every time (because the phone wont work without it):

I always wondered what this section did - when I tinkered with it, it didn’t seem to affect much (i.e. it always would stay on the “registering” state). Guess changing the <sipLines> section to “USECALLMANAGER” did the trick. (Hope this might help someone else out there if you run into a similar problem like I did).

DialPlan.xml

The dialplan.xml lets the phone send the entered phone extension/number to the server after a certain time, and after matching a pattern/rule defined in the XML. Search for the title “DialPlan Notes (dialplan.xml)” in this article Voip-info.org > Asterisk phone cisco 79xx for example XML for a dialplan and notes on it too.

For reference the main line I used to test things out were the following entries:

The first two MATCH’s correspond to FreeSWITCH’s default extensions/accounts that it has when it’s freshly installed (i.e. 1000, 1001, 1002... 1009, 1010, 1011... 1019). These are rules whereby once the user enters either “100″ or “101″, and any digit (i.e. the dot represents any number from 0 to 9), the rule will be matched and the phone will immediately (i.e. timeout of zero) send the call/extension request to the server to ring that extension.

The last entry has four dots in the MATCH tag, and 2 seconds time out. This indicates any 4 digits will match this rule after 2 seconds of no other numbers being dialed. So if you enter a number like “2000″ for example, the phone will not send the data/request to the server until after 2 seconds.

Keep in mind you can remap extensions too, sort of like a speed dial:

This will effectively translate dialing “19″ to call the extension of “1019″ instead. The 4 examples will also work if they are all present in the dialplan too, just keep in mind that if you have “10″ as a match (with a timeout of zero), it will always trigger before you ever get to “100.”.

NOTE: Keep in mind these rules only trigger when the line is “active”, i.e. you pick up the handset or switch on speaker. Entering numbers before selecting a line wont trigger the rules and dial numbers.

FreeSWITCH

I had initially tried Asterisk, my first impression of it was a bit intimidating, and I didn’t quite know where to start - perhaps someone who is more familiar with PBX/SIP stuff might have, but the thing I wanted to achieve was just an internal phone setup... So I tried an alternative called FreeSwitch.

Turns out FreeSWITCH has a default setup where you can start testing/calling with some preconfigured standard accounts. Once I read some of FreeSWITCH’s Getting Started Guide (before moving to the more hands-on section named “Some stuff to try out!“) I ended up finding the accounts files and whatnot, to get my own set up up and running!

The “Some stuff to try out!” section is definitely a great way to get some SIP stuff up and running quickly and confirming if your setup is on the right track.

I know this is a long post :P

I wanted to kind of consolidate the stuff I learned in the process - as well as document it somewhere in case I forget and end up having to set up these phones from scratch again. Perhaps it might help someone else out there who might want to try a small intercom-like network for themselves. :)

I came to north Carolina at the beginning of August from FL to stay with my aunt while I got my finances in order and she recovered from her back surgery. I plan to stay here until a bit after the new year. When I moved, I arranged to have my mail forwarded while i am here. I was made aware of this error when I received a license suspension letter yesterday. Since then I have notified the state of Florida Of the error. I then received notice that my insurance was still not acceptable because Florida requires that if I have a florida registration, i must have a Florida policy. I called my insurance who confirmed that although they provide Florida coverage, I was under a nc policy even though I provided them with a Florida drivers license number since my mailing address was currently nc. I have had no lapse in coverage, but my insurance company cannot switch it back to florida until I am living there again at the beginning of the new year and can provide a valid address of where I will be living. The insurance company sent an initial check for $38K, and there is $7K in depreciation as a hold back. Last year I had Unitrin Direct....they were charging me $85 a month...this is with NO tickets or accidents for the last 5 years of my driving record....this is also with the BASIC insurance that you need in Florida...10/10/20...NO collision...and a $1000 deductible..... So at the end of my 6 months...it was time for a renewal...they tried to bump me up to $140 a month for no reason...still no accidents/tickets...nothing had changed...i had expected my rate to DECREASE....they tell me it's a STATEWIDE INCREASE ......so i called around... Ended up switching to Allstate who has been charging me $90 a month (better than $140 right?).....6 months go by, everything's cool.....now my policy renewal is coming up and they're trying to tell me i need to pay $160 a month for their basic insurance. Are you kidding me? And according to them it's another STATEWIDE INSURANCE INCREASE ...... They also told me that it could be due to not having CONSECUTIVE insurance for the last few years, as in...I switched from State Farm to Unitrin to Allstate......they told me call the state insurance commissioner...which I did.... Got connected to some guy in Gainesville who tells me that the INSURANCE companies are the ones who decide the rates and increases...not them. Pretty much BS....Allstate's blaming the state, state's blaming them...feels like a huge runaround to me. Guess my questions are.... Should I stick with Allstate and pay $160 a month for this absolute BASIC insurance (keep in mind..no collision, $1000 deductible)...my car's not even worth a YEAR of their insurance. ....
