NMTDaily: VOX POPS

- Hi all! I’m going to be rewatching along with TCWs NMTDaily and making posts about each episode, or as many as I can (I might miss some, but I hope not!)

- I want to start by saying thank you again to The Candle Wasters for making my favorite thing. Just, the amount of joy and creative fulfillment and friendship and delight I’ve gotten from this show and this fandom is still unmatched. Thank you so much for making it and sharing it. The love and care and skill with which NMTD was made still shines through and I’m still so awed by it. I think I was probably somewhat overdramatic about my reactions to Lolilo in places where you, TCW, could see, on my main blog, and you didn’t deserve that. I really hope I didn’t send you any aggressive asks about it, or make you uncomfortable in any way. I’m a little afraid I did, but I don’t know for sure. If I did, I apologize. I’m older and more mature now, I promise. I hope you’re all doing so very well now!

- I didn’t realize until today that Project I: VOX POPS was posted first, before any other video in the series. I didn’t start watching NMTD until right around the time Benedick’s first Q&A video was posted, so I binged the first chunk of episodes around that time. It will be interesting to watch them at a slower pace this time!

- I am immediately overwhelmed with warm fuzzies at seeing these characters again. They’re such babies! I love them!

- I never made a post about this, but Ben’s first line being about how he shares a (differently spelled) name with a Pope is both a great first line for him on a character level since he starts as kind of a cocky overconfident asshole (a cover for his soft sensitive insides) AND it’s evidence for my theory that he’s probably Catholic, but lapsed/non-practicing/maybe agnostic or atheist solely because I WILL keep projecting parts of me onto this character, it’s just what I do at this point. Other evidence: he has a confirmation name. We don’t get his full name til Lolilo, but still. And he’s partly Scottish, which can account for the fact that English people usually are not Catholic.

- “you need to imitate an eagle, that’ll scare them away!” That’s Ben’s second line and first bird reference! Already! Wow.

- The favorite band question! Mumford and Sons! Fife and the Drums! Sheep Dog and Wolf! The LORE! The REFERENCES! We’re already off to the races.

- “I don’t need chat-up lines” Beatrice I love you , and you have no idea what’s coming.

- I forgot about Beatrice’s Favorite T-Shirts Ranking System lol

- Extremely funny that Ben says bananas are his favorite food and then he goes on to become synonymous with mangoes instead. Sorry, buddy, you will always be Mango Skin Boy to us. xD

- I forgot how delightful Dogberry and Verges are in this episode

- “that you would leave me” oh Meg. Oh honey. Oh no.

- I’ve seen nine seasons of Doctor Who and only five episodes of Game of Thrones since 2014. Sorry Bea, I side with Ben on this one. And I’ve seen one season of Community. I’m slowly hacking away at the list of media referenced in nmtd that I need to watch!

- Balthazar plays every instrument, of course.

- Bea must not have an ear for music if she hated that question enough to force Ursula on-camera so she doesn’t have to answer it… Unless Ursula asked her something else she didn’t want to answer! Lol

- Ben makes me cringe so hard a couple times this episode. And yet I still love him. To be fair, that’s just every Benedick at the start of Much Ado, though. The cringy lines are completely in character.

- I decided to save the full story of how I discovered NMTD for whenever the NMTDaily email for Ben’s first Q&A episode goes out, because then it will actually be ten years almost to the day since I started watching. But I’m so impatient and excited to tell the story!

- It’s amazing how back then, these kids were my contemporaries and the Lizzie Bennet Diaries cast felt impossibly old compared to me. Now the NMTD kids are babies and I’m older than Lizzie Bennet! Trippy. It sure has been a nice ten years.

The first character I first fell in love with: I would have to say Obi-Wan. I always liked him the best in the prequels because of his sass and oldest sibling vibe. (If you've read my other responses to these fandom asks, you'll see that sass is a staple of all my favorite characters.) But I also love Rex, Fives, Echo, and Tech.

The character I never expected to love as much as I do now: That would be one Captain/Commander Rex!

The character everyone else loves that I don’t: I mean, I guess Yoda? His episodes were always a little boring to me. I like Yoda, he's just not my fav.

The character I love that everyone else hates: Oh goodness. I guess early Ahsoka? She's really not that bad for a child being thrown into a war with Anakin "Disaster" Skywalker as a master.

The character I used to love but don’t any longer: OK, so, like, Prequel Kaninoans, didn't care. Didn't love, didn't hate. Now that I've realized that clones are the coolest ever, the Kaminoans are kind of the worst!

The character I would totally smooch (or hug): All the clones deserve a hug.

The character I’d want to be like: Rex! He's resilient and caring. He'd do anything for his friends.

The character I’d slap: Pong Krell, of course! But also Rush Clovis. He was annoying.

A pairing that I love: Padme and Ankain are cute, but I also liked Obi-Wan and Satine's forbidden love thing.

A pairing that I despise: I am not a fan of the Rex and Ahsoka ship. Sorry!

"Emmilia?" Silence. Anakin continued to walk up and down the aisles of the ship. "Emmilia???", he shouted her name again –this time louder. But he got no answer. Frowning, Anakin continued on his way. The ship was neither large nor winding enough to hide. Still, no one had seen the Jedi! Therefore, Anakin had to continue his search for his Padawan. From time to time he called her name, but his main focus was to track her down with the help of force. After all, this method was foolproof!

Lost in thought, Anakin roamed the aisle and almost ran into Captain Rex and Commander Cody. "Sorry! I wasn't paying attention.", Anakin said still with his head up in the air. He wasn't quite up to it, but the two clones looked past it casually. They had noticed hours ago that the general was somewhere else with his thoughts what was unlike General Skywalker. "Cody? Rex?", the Jedi held them back. Immediately, Rex and Cody turned to him. "Yes, General?" "Have you seen Emmilia?"  The brothers shook their heads. "The last time was a few hours ago with Commander Tano in the canteen.", Rex added. Anakin sighed. "Thank you!" Already Anakin hured on. How was it possible that could not find an untrained and inexperienced Jedi?! Again, Anakin unleashed an annoyed sigh. A dull, metallic bang sounded as the grille of the ventilation in front of the Jedi Knight crashed to the ground. A second later, Emmilia landed elegantly in front of her master. "I did not see that coming!", it escaped from the surprised Jedi’s mouth. "You have called me, Master, and here I am. How can I help you?" Neutral. Concrete formally. Absolutely factual. This tone of voice made Anakin stunned. In dealing with his padawans he was used to something different and he had established this approach himself, because he wanted it to be that way. Now it was obviously formal and distant! It was one of those rare moments when Anakin was speechless, which of course didn't last long. Otherwise it wouldn't be Anakin! "I haven't seen you all day, Emmilia. I wanted to inquire about your first Senate session. What was it like with Padme?" Emmilia curled her lips for a moment before she put on an emphatically neutral facial expression again. "Boring. Senator Amidala is not a particularly interesting person.", replied the young üadawan. Then she took a step forward to disappear again. But Anakin didn't let her get away that quickly. He grabbed her wrist and dragged her into an adjoining room. "Okay, darling, now you're telling me what's wrong with you!", he demanded of his girlfriend. Yes! That's right. Anakin Skywalker had a secret relationship with his padawan Emmilia. But the relationship started a year before the strength of force was discovered in her. It was discovered surprisingly late! Due to the small age difference between Anakin, Ahsoka and Emmilia, so Emmilia was assigned as Anakin’s padawan! It had intensified their relationship, although Ahsoka had caught wind of the matter pretty quickly. Of course, she kept it to herself and helped them to have time for themselves from time to time without being bothered by anyone. But that were other stories! "Everything is fine with me, Master. But I have work to do! So, if you don't need anything from me, then I would like to continue doing my work.", she told him. The biting undertone in her voice did not escape Anakin. "I don't believe you! Tell me what your problem is with me today!", he demanded. Now Anakin also spoke more sharply. "Why don't you ask your new flame Padme?!", Emmilia hissed at him. I have nothing with Padme! How do you come up with that?" Contemptuously, the young Padawan snorted, rolled his eyes and crossed his arms in front of his chest. "Are you kidding?!", it burst out of her. "I saw you before the session! It couldn't have been more obvious how much you like them. All the touching of the arm, the intimate, long hugs and how close you stood! We do the same because of the council! Don't sell me for stupid, Anakin! I'm not stupid and I'm not blind! I've seen you!" "Woohoohoohoo, you're jealous, Emmilia!", Anakin whistled amused, which only made his girlfriend even more angry. "So what?! Then I'm jealous! But that doesn't change the fact that you're being with Padme now!", she yelled at him. However, her boyfriend remained absolutely cool! A crooked grin pulled the corners of his mouth upwards. Anakin crossed his arms in front of his chest. "I have nothing with Padme!", he assured Emmilia. But Anakin couldn't stay one hundred percent serious, because he just couldn't believe it. Emmilia was jealous of Padme! This was ridiculous and absolutely unnecessary. "I. Have. Seen. You. Two!", Emmilia hissed with clenched teeth. "It was obvious!" Now Anakin had to laugh. "Nothing was obvious, darling! There is nothing between Padme and me. We are friends. Good friends but friends! Padme and me hugging each other is nothing new for you. The constant touches didn't exist, I don't know what you saw, Emmilia. But I promise you that there is nothing between us!", Anakin emphasized emphatically. Now he no longer grinned amused! Only a gentle smile adorned his lips. "Do you believe me,  Emmilia? Do you believe me that Padme and I are friends?", he finally wanted to know, because he was not sure if she really believed him.  Emmilia's head was lowered; her arms were still crossed. Anakin couldn't tell from her body language whether she mistrusted him and was still angry or whether she believed him. "I believe you...", she murmured. After that, the jedi finally raised his head and looked straight into his eyes. "I believe and trust you!" Red cheeks shone towards Anakin. Emmilia grabbed her forehead. "This is embarrassing! I'm so embarrassed! How could I distrust you so much and then make a scene out of it? I only now realize how stupid I have behaved!", she babbled shamefully to herself. "That's okay, Milia! I also get jealous sometimes. But you have to talk to me about it!"  Emmilia nodded heated cheeks. "Next time we'll talk about it.", she murmured to herself. Anakin pressed a kiss on her temple before leaving the room. "Besides it was kinda cute actually!", said Anakin, but his grin give himself away. "You're going to annoy me until the end of my life, won't you?", asked Emmilia the jedi knight. She wore a smile on her face. "What you can take poison on, my young Padawan!", laughed Anakin as they walked down the aisle on their way to the bridge.

An open letter to Kylo Ren and Bo-Katan fans, from a Crosshair fan

Very light TW, mentions that I was at one point depressed and anxious, no more detail past that but I did want to give a fair warning.

I want to start off by saying that I'm not happy I had to learn this lesson from experience and am pretty embarrassed about some of what I have said to y'all, but I want to admit that is how it went just to be authentic, you know?

Being a fan of Crosshair has been hard on this site. Now it isn't a "real problem" so don't come at me with that, but it still really sucks to want to go talk about a character you love and get hit with waves of negativity. Especially after the release of S1E15 of TBB, I have been called a Nazi so many times and it's so frustrating. Crosshair is a villainous figure. He has done awful things. I don't agree with him. But i see the best in him and hope he can achieve it. Now undoubtedly some fans of him have been awful, saying that he is 100% right in EVERYTHING and that he truly is superior. It's been so frustrating to see that minority of our little corner of our community get spotlighted and blown up to represent us all.

I have historically not been kind to you guys. Kylo not as much but especially Bo fans, you can go back to posts the day of Mando Season 2 finale and probably find me saying some really rude stuff about Bo, going through the tag and just going off on any positive post about her and being so rude to her fans. And then with Kylo fans I did judge you all for the longest time, doing what I have hated being done to me, seeing the worst of you guys and assigning it to everyone.

Bo, Kylo, and Cross have all done some undeniably awful things, but a lot of Cross fans acknowledge that and still hold him accountable in our heads, we agree that he needed to be stunned and that his rhetoric is harmful. And I'm sure many of you fans acknowledge that Bo indeed helped the organization that killed her sister and was out of line with Kenobi, that Kylo did indeed kill 6 planets, like we all know these things but I try to see the good and believe in Cross, and I never extended that to you guys.

A few months ago I was really down and realized that part of it was how negative I am. Now, this doesn't work for everyone with depression or anxiety, I just was feeling desperate because nothing was working, so i tried to just be positive about something. Again, this doesn't work for everyone and everyone's path is different, if someone tells you you HAVE to do one specific thing to get better than they're dumb. Anyway, I looked for something I hated in my life that I can try and change with little consequence, and I ended up on Bo. I watched all of her episodes in TCW, Rebels, and Mando with the explicit goal of trying to love her. Now I never did get to love her, but I think she's really cool and is a flawed character just like every prequel era character and that she is a definite positive in Star Wars.

So after a reblog I got on a post from @sleepyowlet bemoaning the hate for Crosshair fans that said Kylo fans got this too, it clicked for me. This isn't just a Crosshair fan thing, fandom arbitrarily picks villains who you are "allowed" to like and absolutely just harass you if you don't pick the "right" ones. It's so frustrating seeing Anakin, Maul, Thrawn, and Kallus getting love on this site for YEARS then loving my character gets me attacked, and that's probably how all of you have felt and I am so, so sorry that I contributed to that.

This has sucked but this is just my way to try and make someone a bit happier from all of this. So Kylo and Bo fans? You guys are awesome

Oh god… where do I even start do you realize how many characters are in Star Wars? How many blorbos and glup shittos fit in there?? This will be very long I apologize in advance.

Blorbo: honestly I have quite a few favorites I think. Probably Boba Fett mostly as of late though if not just because bobf has been eating at my brain. I am obsessed with his characterization like they took a random fucking guy the Fanboys™️ clung to and made him such an interesting character. Ahsoka is a blorbo too just because there is so much to think abt with her…. Oh and Omega I think of her way too much but I’ll discuss that more in poor little meow meows.

Scrunkly: hm. You know this is actually kind of hard. I’m just gonna say Din though my tin can man I admit he’s not actually scrunkly or baby but he is shaped and sometimes I want to throw a slice of cheese at his helmet because I think his confused reaction would be funny. Oh Echo is also shaped and my special guy. Not rlly scrunkly or a baby again but I think being an armored cyborg is perhaps one of the most shaped things you can do. He’s cute though I want to completely redesign his ugly whitewashed design and give him a gun attachment for his arm he deserves it <3

Scrimblo Bimblo: Max fucking Rebo my blue little guy rip j*zz legend you will be missed😔BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY Finn and Rose they were sidelined so hard and Star Wars has a nasty habit of doing this with their compelling poc characters my god they deserved such better writing and screen time and literally Everything. Oh also K-2SO? He was iconic in Rogue One literally one of my favorite droids and I think Rogue One should be discussed more in general but I just thought K-2was neat :]

Glup Shitto: That hot turquoise twi’lek guy from bobf. He doesn’t have a name but he is trans and he seems nice :]. Literally any handmaiden. They had to deal with So much. Basically any minor character from tcw because no one else knows who they are but I would freak out if they were mentioned. Bossk was in the originals too but if boba so much mentions him in the new content I will Talk Extensively about it.

Poor Little Meow Meow: Maul lol. He’s very popular he’s just such a weird evil fucked up terrifying but also kind of pathetic little guy. Uhhhh also Omega! She’s fine she’s just mildly controversial because the tbb writing was lacking to say the least and a lot of people thought she was annoying and doesnt make sense in the big picture and I get that but I can fix her. Oh and Commander Fox! He’s not pathetic or anything and didn’t even have much of an appearance but he is kinda controversial. A good chunk of the tcw fandom Hates him because killed Fives but I will defend him anyway, like I love Fives so so much but Fox did what he thought he had to do it’s all very nuanced you can learn more by sending me Star Wars sideblog asks someone please-

Horse Plinko: Tech and Crosshair in a fairly lighthearted way like they’re still clones so I’ll always support them to an extent but their designs are so so ugly and I like bullying them in discord servers. Less lighthearted with Cross though he’s kind of a dick. Obi-Wan in a lighthearted way too because he’s fun to see in pain. The Kryze sisters in a significantly less lighthearted way though they’re interesting but mass murder and irresponsible leadership is not inherently girlboss I’m sorry. I will also bully any Viszla for anything at any time.

Eeby Deeby: Palpatine lol he just sucks for obvious reasons. Oh and Kyle Ron. Kylo stannies dni I Do Not Care if he was redeemed I don’t care if his name is actually Ben and I don’t care about Reylo I simply Do Not Care For Him he’s so whiny and angsty and for what his backstory is not even THAT bad he gives incel vibes and idc if he’s a goth angsty sadboi Maul did it better and he did it with horns and cool tattoos.

Before I get to writing about the actual Bad Batch premiere, time to write another weird ranty post. This time... about overwriting canon. If you know what I mean, click the readmore to see what I have to say. If you don’t... well, don’t click, duh.

Yes, I’m talking about Caleb Dume’s inclusion.

Is canon something we hold too sacred? Yes. Am I still going to ask why they change things and wonder if it’s justified or not? Also yes.

I’m not super attached to the Kanan comic like some people are, but even as the episode played, I still took issue with the decisions they made? The reason ended up being surprisingly simple: I just preferred the story that was told in the comic than what we got on screen.

I definitely get why Filoni and co decided to feature this moment. Having a major character from one of your other shows get one of the most formative moments of his life portrayed is an opportunity too tempting to pass up. Honestly, when they made that Caleb model for the Siege of Mandalore opening, they were probably already thinking to themselves they should use it for something else.

As a scene in general, I do like what we got. I do like that we got to see Depa and Caleb together, and that we then saw everything go down, and how Caleb was already panicking and reacting to any clone with intense fear. Only real issues I have are that Freddie Prinze Jr (as great as it is to hear him again), as much as he tries to pitch up his voice clearly isn’t a 12 year old so it’s kinda distracting and even unintentionally hilarious (does anyone else think he even sounds a bit like Ezra at points?). That and, uh, the fact that Caleb’s design is whitewashed for some reason, but I talked about that before. The reason I’m not too into the scene and prefer the comic version though? Well, to put it simply, this isn’t Caleb’s story here.

Kanan: The Last Padawan is a story about Kanan Jarrus, back when he was still Caleb Dume. It’s focused on him and his relationship with Depa Billaba, what he’s like as a padawan, how he got along with clones like Grey and Styles, and of course how all of that comes together to impact him during Order 66. It’s a story about him.

Aftermath on the other hand isn’t a story about Caleb. It’s a story about the Bad Batch. This could’ve been any Jedi padawan escaping, any master that could’ve died, and it would’ve been the same story because it’s about how the Bad Batch react to Order 66 and what decisions they choose to make. They just chose to feature Caleb escaping Order 66 because they wanted to show that scene for Rebels fans. As a result, I was more focused on Hunter and Crosshair’s feelings and motives than what Caleb was going through.

Like, it’s not that it’s wrong to not feature Caleb here (...whitewashing aside, yeah sorry I’m gonna be salty for a while), it’s just that the more personal and impactful version of the story is I feel the comic for the reasons I stated, and now the more “official” version of the story is the one that’s less focused and personal for Caleb.

Oh yeah, there’s another thing that bothers me, but I find it more hilarious than anything: so much is changed from the comic, like yes putting the scene in new context is one thing, but changing things that wouldn’t even impact the story is another. Allow me to explain:

Captain Grey? He’s a commander in the comic, and there’s no Styles. I guess this was to be more efficient but you couldn’t be bothered to paint one more clone in some re... wait, green?

Yes, Grey’s armour is green, but in the comic it’s red. I’ve seen people suggest that it could be to avoid confusion with the shock troopers or even the Bad Batch themselves, but like... is it really that hard to discern? The red is a different shade and pattern. The shock troopers have WAY more red. Eh, what do I know.

On the topic of colours... why is Depa’s lightsabre now blue? It was not only green in the comics, but in freaking live action too (well, at least for promotional photos, IDK if they count as full canon). Let me guess, it’s something like Grey’s armour now being green means we can’t tell the difference now. Is there something I’m missing here? Something as small as a lightsabre colour feels like it’s changed for the sake of it.

Kaller is completely different: much snowier, and we see everything happen at daytime.

Like, stuff like this I just don’t get? Why make such insignificant changes when they don’t really impact the story? Did Kanan talk about how snowy it was when he watched his master die or something? :v I am aware this stuff that doesn’t matter, but that’s EXACTLY why I’m confused as to why they’re changing this stuff.

I think a lot of my confusion at this also comes from the fact that Lucasfilm promised when they rebooted canon under Disney, they would make a more unified and cohesive one to follow, one where everything would feel connected and that any errors would just be that, small mistakes that can be corrected or overlooked. But like, Filoni is clearly doing his own thing. The Siege of Mandalore is different to the Ahsoka novel (and implies some retcons to Son of Dathomir for that matter, an actual TCW story adapted lol). There’s differences with Cobb Vanth in The Mandalorian to his story in the Aftermath books.

The reason I wasn’t as concerned there was because well for one, Cobb Vanth’s written material is something I haven’t read, so I can’t really compare. But for the stuff in the final Clone Wars season, it’s either small things, but even for bigger stuff like how events play out it’s because they told a better story, I felt. That, and all the changes I felt made sense or were at least justified (for example, Ahsoka now having blue lightsabres adds character to her and Anakin). I also felt I was able to reconcile what didn’t fit through unreliable narrators - something I’ve seen suggested for the Kanan comics because those ARE his flashbacks, but again, the issue I have with Kanan is I prefer the story in those comics to here. If it is how they justify things then fair enough, but that’s still gonna make me wonder about things.

Something I also find kinda weird was that the comic was written by Greg Weisman, who was a writer on the first season of Rebels, and for that matter the story editor (a position that in some cases is equivalent to head writer, even if I don’t know if that’s the case here) on said season. So not just some random comic writer, one of the main writers who helped get the show off the ground wrote it. I just feel like it’s really weird that you’d have one of your main writers write this origin story, only to then go and overwrite it yourself like it never existed? IDK what Greg Weisman feels on the subject, but it’s an odd situation. It’s basically taking your co-worker’s work and going “okay but we’re gonna do it MY way instead just to serve my new story because I’m in charge even though you worked with me and you have insights and discussions with me that make your contributions not that of just any writer”).

So yeah, even if canon is something we fixate too much on in fandom, I don’t blame people for sometimes feeling like they’re told the stories they like matter less, especially when you’re being told things are SUPPOSED to be more connected now. Even not being strongly attached to this story as much as others, I feel like making this version more prominent can’t help but bum me out because I feel the story in the comic was more in-depth and impactful.

1.) What OTPs in your fandom(s) do you just not get?

For SW: most of the mainstream Clone/Jedi ship especially Rexwalker, Rexsoka, and Plowolffe. I just ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ nope, no thanks. I also don’t get Monnk/Kit like. They probably had interactions in Comics, but canon they had like 2 lines and one of them was Kit just recognizing Monnk as commander im 90% sure

Also for SW: ANY Padawan/Master Ship. I will come for you kneecaps if I see anyone tagging my shit as ObiKin, Anisoka, or QuiObi. I’m a ship what you want person but if you’re tagging my original stuff with those tags I’m gonna throw hands

Another SW: Barrissoka?? I know people love it because wlw and all that, but Filoni needs to stop uncanon-izing actual canon as well. Barriss was always like 20 something in my eyes and sure tcw changed that but. I grew up with Barriss being a whole ass adult. It’s weird to suddenly see her as not that. (Also I never connected with Barris. At all)

I just want to say thank you for your blog. As a black SW fan, the past few years have been rough. My dad is half white from his mom, and her family disowned her for marrying my black grandfather, and I still don’t know that side of my family. So when TFA came it, I was surprised when the co-protagonists were a white woman and black man. I didn’t expect much, knowing Hollywood, so I was surprised when they had sweet healthy friendship (continued in part 2)

(Part 2) At the end of the movie when Rey kissed Finn, I almost sobbed, because seeing that meant so much to me given my family history. So it made me mad when people insisted that there was nothing between them. I used to like Stormpilot, but when people began shipping it to leave Rey “available” it bothered me. So when TLJ mad TROS came out and Reylo became canon, I was devastated because one again, Hollywood racism won (continued in part 3)

(Part 3) I still hung around the sequels, and even almost shipped Reylo for a few weeks, but when I throughout about how it ruined the first 6 movies, and when the racism became not apparent, I, like a lot of other black ppl left the sequel fandom. I’ve stuck with the prequels instead, but they get a lot of hate too, so finding your prequel positive blog - and not the clone wars, the genuine bonafide prequels, has been amazing. HI this is just out of curiosity; don’t feel obligated to answer, but do you ship obi-wan/anakin? some of your works seem to edge on that while still remaining gloriously platonic, so I’m just curious!! I’m indifferent either way btw; I was just wondering :)

hi anon!!! i appreciate the ask, and i don’t mind answering at all!! (although oops i kinda went on a mini essay here i’m really sorry)

so slight confession: i did kind of lowkey ship obi-wan and anakin as a 14/15 year old and onwards, mostly because i started out watching tcw and reading a lot of star wars books. so that said, i really do love them both platonically and otherwise because either way, i think their relationship is incredibly special. (and i think i do have a fic or two in which i note that ‘yeah idk this could be seen as platonic or romantic, because i love them both ways/don’t mind them either way’.) 

that said, i wasn’t really aware of the opposite side of the obi-wan/anakin discourse until,,,really recently, and so that made me kinda balk a few times and feel really disconnected with the ship and also wonder ‘wait a minute,,,am i a terrible human being wait a second i didn’t even figure out that point until just now though oh no’. so that really kinda made me feel guilty and genuinely wonder oh my god wait a second if i’m shipping a person with his former teacher, then,,,oh my g od what yeah that’s kinda messed up isn’t it??? (why yes, you heard it here first folks! caroline acknowledges that uh maybe some aspects of this ship is,,,not something you want to replicate in real life???) 

but also. also. i think i’ve hit a place--and i’ve kind of alluded this in some other asks about unpopular opinions/opinions about fandom in general, where i’m deciding to recognize that ships can really be something as simple as “i just think these two have an interesting dynamic” to “maybe i just project really, really, really hard onto character a and character b just happens to be my type”. 

i’ll *also* say that i have friends whose parents are in loving relationships, and they started out as like,,,a professor and a student, although they didn’t date/get into a romantic relationship until years later. and one of my favorite teachers also wound up marrying his own student years and years later, which...i remember being a little confused by as a high school junior, but idk, they seem happy, and they have a son who they both adore, so ?? who am i to judge?? 

and i think those experiences/interactions i’ve had have made me a little less squicked out by things like age gaps and the whole ‘former teacher and former student’ dynamic. that being said, i’m not a fan of stuff about,,,padawan anakin and obi-wan because i think that’s when i get a little worried about power dynamics and stuff, but again, i started kinda shipping the two when i watched tcw without that much context about their actual past--i just kinda went ‘oh these two seem close’ and that was that. i think at the end of the day, simply put, anakin skywalker and obi-wan kenobi do love each other and do have a deep, deep bond, and that’s that.

as for my own writing, why awww, i super appreciate the term “gloriously platonic” because i guess i really do love deeply, deeply platonic relationships, and i 10000% am here for platonic love. i guess i do sometimes walk that fine line between “okay this is either deeply platonic or just lowkey shippy” and tbh, i blame this on the fact that i just really like writing platonic things + also a part of me lives in perpetual fear of being labeled a Bad, Disgusting Person for shipping obi-wan/anakin and yikes. 

idk my own feelings about this ship is super complicated because on the one hand, i truly do love this potential pairing that has actual canon lines like “they knew each other better than lovers” and “two halves of a whole” and “despite it all, obi-wan still loved him” and “he would die for you, you know” and “working without anakin was like working half-blind” and “it’s okay, it’s okay, we’re okay, we’re okay” and “you never give up, do you? / “on you? never” and ahsoka actually referring obi-wan and anakin as her adopted parents and also the iconic “ah yes this looks like anakin’s butt”--and i really love this concept of just two people who have known each other for 10+ years and just kinda gotten to the point of memorizing each other’s voices and movements and gestures to the point that they literally can’t imagine life without the other, and i love all the platonic goodness that comes with that, but i’d be lying if i said i didn’t see some romantic appeal in that, too.

2: otp 

Definitely Obikin, I fell in love with these two assholes the first time I watched TCW and then I read the really super gay RotS novelization, and then I saw the actual MOVIES and ugh, they’re just soulmates.  They have such an electric dynamic, they work off of each other and they’re funny and they care and they’re the most competent and deadly team in the galaxy and if they wanted to and communicated more there would be literally nothing they couldn’t do together, and it’s frustrating because you know how much they care about each other but they never manage to get on the same level and arghhhhh.  Also I love the tragic lovers-to-enemies trope.  ALSO ALSO OBI WAN HELPED ANAKIN BECOME A FORCE GHOST AND NOW THEY’RE LIVING TOGETHER IN THE AFTERLIFE FOR ETERNITY HECK YEA BOIIIIII

3: brotp 

Also him and Anakin lol, but also I really like his dynamic with Cody, so I’m torn!  OBI WAN AND AHSOKA HECK YEAH WE NEEDED MORE OF THEIR ADVENTURES AND INTERACTIONS.  GIVE ME AHSOKA IN THE OBI WAN SHOW OR GIVE ME DEATH.  Fucking ditto for Obes and Padmé, I would have loved to see their friendship that RotS said they had.  I’ve read like two or three or five of the supplementary books so there’s a lot I don’t know, but I like how the fans have written his friendship with Bail.  OH SHIT I TOTALLY FORGOT HIS DYNAMIC WITH QUINLAN ALSO YES THAT PLEASE.  I ALSO also love the fan canon created that Obi Wan grew up with Quinlan and Luminara both being around his age and that the three of them were friends, I think that’s super cute!!!!

4: notp 

Hmmm so like.  I don’t ship bash so pls know these are just what I personally don’t really vibe with, all ships are welcome on this here blog.  Also this is hard because Obes is kinda the fandom’s little black dress we can ship with anyone.  I guess I’d say I’m not a shipper of him with those who he doesn’t really have that much of an interesting dynamic with in canon, or I don’t see a potential dynamic with their personalities, idk?  Like, I never really got into Qui Gon’s character except for him just.  Being there?  In TPM so I never really shipped him and Obes.  Ditto for the Obi Wan and Rex ship that’s popped up and growing popular?  Like, I understand that that particular ship is more about taking two handsome and good guys who deserve happiness and pairing them up so they can be happy together, but idk just, they don’t really interact that much in canon and when they do they’re kinda just... there?  Again?  And yeah, I just don’t really see that much of a spark between them based off of their interactions or their personalities.  Idk, just my two cents.  Again, no offense to those who do ship it!

5: first headcanon that pops into my head 

Obi Wan Kenobi has exactly zero sense of style.  I’m sorry, but he doesn’t.  It’s just his dumb luck that he’s a literal supermodel who would look good in a paper bag.  He doesn’t even know he looks great in red because he says it’s not his color!  He’s more than happy that the standard Jedi tunics were predesigned cuz they’re comfy and in a neutral color and he never has to worry about picking out an outfit, and he does Not like getting dressed up for fancy events because he finds fancy clothing uncomfortable.  The Padawan chop cut he couldn’t help because Qui Gon also has no sense of style, but the mullet he grew out was all him and again, only looks good on him because he’s Obi Wan and he’s gorgeous.  The nicely styled shorter cut he has for TCW and RotS came from him deciding to cut the mullet himself when the war started so it would be easier to maintain, doing an absolutely atrocious job with it.  When he runs to Luminara or Quinlan or whoever in a panic because it looks like a Nexu tried to bite his head off and caught his hair, they take the opportunity and actually give him a decent hairstyle and he figures it looks nice so he’ll keep it.

6: one way in which I relate to this character 

Hmmm this is hard cuz guys Obi Wan is WAY cooler than I am.  I guess we both share a love of languages and linguistics, and we like to teach little kids stuff.  We also both love Anakin to death and would do almost anything for him, even when the little shit’s being a stupid-ass moron who makes awful choices and we really shouldn’t be defending for anything.

7: thing that gives me second hand embarrassment about this character 

FUCKING BALD OBI WAN DURING THE DECEPTION ARC IN SEASON FOUR.  THAT THING SCARRED ME I HATE IT IT’S ATROCIOUS. Also, I... do not like the Kadavo arc, and pretty much every character in it gives me secondhand embarrassment, but I really don’t like his plotline there and it does give me secondhand embarrassment for a variety of reasons.  Also, just-- that moment in RotS when he’s fighting Grievous and decides that kicking the fucking metal cyborg’s leg would be a good idea and then hurts his leg?  I always wince like, my dude, what did you think was gonna happen? xD

8: cinnamon roll or problematic fave?

CINNAMON ROLL!  CINNAMON ROLLLLLLL!!!!!!!  Like yes I know, I know he’s not perfect, he makes a lot of mistakes and has flaws and I love him for those various flaws, but he is a genuinely good and kind CINNAMON ROLL who wants to be a good person and deserves a NAP and a HUG and NICE THINGS and ABSOLUTELY NONE OF ANAKIN’S FUCKING BULLSHIT

Hello there! Thank you for such kind words, it’s always nice to know someone like my articles! The sad truth is that I have plenty of star wars half-written metas, analysis & rants hidden between drafts and my personal documents, I just didn’t manage to finish them yet. Mainly, because my mind is bastard traitor that like to hyperfixating on special interests of mine while ignoring everything else. Like, really, I have four main fandoms that I think everyday in this or another way (SW, MK, One Piece and Siewca Wiatru) and usually I am able to share time between different projects but sometimes my mind decide to solely focus on one subject and every other planned thing is on hiatus. Right now, I get back backstabbed by One Piece and since latest TCW made me, again, feel down, star was just patiently wait for better times.

Sorry for that inconvenience! That said, I will write star wars stuff sooner or later for sure - I can’t live without writting about star wars for too long, after all! Just need to get in the right mindset. Of course, if there is a special interest of yours about star wars, lemme know, who knows, maybe it will kick me into writting a new article sooner than later :)

Thank you my dear! You are my Star Wars Friend so I’ll keep it SW focused (if you wanted to ask this to solely find out what else I liked BESIDES SW sorry lol just let me know and I can redo it). This got long because turns out I have a lot to say about my ships so answers under the cut!!! xD

Absolute favorite ship: This one’s kinda hard but I’m gonna have to go with Obi Wan/Anakin! I also like them a lot as a trio with Padmé, but overall I gotta say these two are just my faves? Why? Because they are such a M E S S and gosh I just love them so much. Ppl say they don’t like each other very much but come on, have you watched the TCW, have you watched RotS, they’re the greatest team there ever was, they’re constantly fretting and worrying about each other, they’re always teasing (the constant banter omg boys pls) at each other and hyping the other up and believing in each other and Ahsoka literally calls them her adoptive guardians in the Ahsoka novel, that’s how much of a family they were and ugh they’re just so married. And they’re such a TRAGEDY and it breaks my heart and it’s delicious to watch because in the final fight it’s just heartbreaking betrayal because through it all they love each other so much and that’s WHY they’re so furious with each other because to them it feels like the ultimate betrayal. Even after (when after everything, Obi Wan still loved Anakin too much to kill him himself) they’re constantly on the other’s mind, and ugh the pain hurts but in such a good way, and how in the end Anakin did the right thing and Obi Wan was RIGHT THERE to help guide him back to the light in spirit and now they can rest happily together for eternity (with some spare stressing about, ya know, Kylo Ren and the impending return of Sidious, but never mind all that). and on top of that, it’s my fave because I also absolutely love their relationship platonically as well, as much as I LIKE to see them together, it’s not necessary for me because they have such an enjoyable dynamic. *coughs* Sorry, so yea, they’re my disaster faves! 😅

A ship I like that most people don’t: See above lol. I get aspects of the Obikin ship can be problematic in the whole power dynamic and age difference thing, but I’ve only ever shipped it after Anakin was knighted as an adult when there’s literally not a problem with it (it was weird for me because I watched the prequels totally out of order. I actually saw the TCW cartoon FIRST and then I saw RotS and then I didn’t watch the first two for a while after that because I was a fool and listened to prequel bashers who said the first two weren’t good, so when I started shipping them as adults that was all I saw them as). To be honest, for the most part the PT fandom is done with the drama since ya know, like a good half of the SW general fandom still hates us, so no one’s really vocal about not liking it and our shipping community is mostly left to ourselves, but every once in a while I’ll come across a joke post/fanart of the two and OP will be all snarky in the notes like “tag as a ship and I’ll come after you with my spiked bat” (someone’s exact words btw) and it’s like ok jeez, do not interact then, was minding my own business dude...

My most underrated ship: Hmmmm....... Gonna have to go between Luke/Ezra and Satine/Padmé. Skybridger I understand since they’ve literally never met in canon, but come ON, they’d get along like a house on fire and argh they should have met, it would be great. I honestly don’t get why Pads and Satine aren’t more of a thing (THEY DON’T EVEN HAVE AN OFFICIAL SHIPNAME ;_; ) cuz c’mon they’re the subtler explosive yin to Obi and Ani’s wildfire yang. They get along great and work together really well, and they both seem to have a type. I am doing them a little better in my new OT4 fic, and I hope ppl like it!!! Ya know what, I’m also gonna add Kaeden (cute girl from the Ahsoka novel!) and Ahsoka because even if a lot of ppl actually ship them, they hardly have any content and neED MORE DANGIT THEY WERE SO CUTE!!!!!!!

Gonna go with Obikin for all the following ones cuz I haven’t had the chance to gush about my boys in a while and you’ve opened Pandora’s box

Rate them from 1-10: 10, plus a hundred more points because I love them, then subtract that hundred again cuz Anakin is an gotdang idiot who ruined it and now they both make me cry. My scoring reasons are that they make me feel all the emotions and I love them Ever So Much and argh.

Fave headcanon: Oh boy, I’ve got a couple actually!

Whenever they’re talking/arguing over the phone, they’re always subconsciously mirroring each other’s actions even when they can’t see what the other is doing. It’s kinda creepy because you’ll hear yelling and it’ll look like one of them’s talking to an invisible person in front of them when it’s actually each other.

There has been multiple instances of them both getting injured in battle because they were distracted watching the other be a total badass (not that either will admit it)

Neither of them are morning people. AT ALL. Obi Wan actually has self-discipline and is able to get up with an alarm and crankily drag them both up, but both are almost impossible to deal with until they’ve had caffeine in them, and it’s been established that unless you want to risk murder, neither of them talks in the morning until caffeine has been provided.

There has been many, many cases of accidentally taking the other’s robe and not realizing it but thinking to themselves that said robe feels more comforting than usual today.

A mutually drunken arm wrestling match absolutely turned into a mutually drunken makeout once. Neither can remember it, and they wonder why some of the clones have been acting funny all week.

Half of the Temple thinks they’re already dating.

Fave Canon Moment: Ughhh, this is HARD. I really like the “any closer and you’d be kissing it” line in TCW, basically any moment in TCW when one of them refers to Ahsoka as “OUR padawan”, the extra long stares and unnecessary touches they give each other in TCW, the elevator scene in RotS movie (THE NOVEL MAKES IT A MILLION TIMES BETTER), also in RotS the way Anakin is half-ready to straight up fight Palpatine when he suggests leaving Obi Wan behind to die, the RotS “No loose wire jokes” bit, the RotS “Roger. Roger.” bit (OKAY JUST THE WHOLE FIRST HALF OF THIS RIDICULOUS MOVIE), the way Vader built his big stupid castle where they had their breakup, the way he’s constantly mentioning Obi Wan when the convo wasn’t even about him, seeing them together again at the end of RotJ (whoops you asked for one, you get MANY SCENES)

Fave AU ideas: Again, there’s a couple!

Superpower AU: Can’t decide whether I’d put this in canon or modern. Most powers in this AU are stolen from inspired by X-Men, DC, and other popular media, so I’m torn between Anakin having Jean Grey/Dark Phoenix style powers while Obi Wan had a variation on Rogue’s with additional energy manipulation. OR it would be a thing where Anakin could commune with the dead a la Klaus from Umbrella Academy while Obes had sort of Avatar-style wind/flight powers. (Both are relevant for different plots).

Sith AU: I know these are far from unpopular in the SW fandom, but the way I’d do it would be to try and write two stories at once, update one every other week so one update a week total. The stories would what would happen if either of them became the Sith Apprentice after the events of Episode 1, and how their dynamic would be during Ep 2 and The Clone Wars with one of them on the other side. It’s funny because the way I’ve plotted it, the Sith!Ani fic would have very big Good Omens vibes, while the Sith!Obi one would have very strong Under the Red Hood vibes, so two VERY different dynamics going on xD

WWII Spies: This is one I 100% plan to write someday, even tho it is a very long time from now. It’s basically following Anakin as an American naval pilot who got injured in a crash and discharged. He still wants to serve and eventually his talent gets him into the intelligence end of the war and sent to Europe where he meets Ben, who’s been working with British intelligence since it broke out, and sparks fly. I’m kind of cheating here cuz as of now this is an Obianidala story, not just Obikin, but it’s one I’m very excited for

Phantom of the Opera AU: This idea I had when I realized that Anakin as Vader is kinda a Lot like the Phantom, but he’s also a Lot like Christine too. So it turned into Anakin as a talented ballet dancer getting preyed on by Palpatine!Phantom (there is NO romance there, Palpy is a total creep and will be treated as such) with Obi Wan as a combination of Raoul and Madame Gery and I have a bunch of ideas and idk if it’s gonna be an actual thing, but I want it to.

Shapeshifter AU: Canon, not very complicated but they can all shift into animals. Obi Wan is a kind of cougar panther cat with a fluffy ginger tail, and Anakin is a big grumpy black Krayt Dragon with a stump for a front leg.

Not A Jedi!AU: One in canon in which set like the Sith!AU, two different stories exploring how their dynamic would be if one of them wasn’t found by the Order. As of now, I’ve got Anakin as the warrior pirate prince of Tatooine, after having grown up and staged a slave rebellion, then promptly put his mother on the throne, and Obi Wan’s there to negotiate something during TCW and things happen. For the Obi Wan one, he’s a political journalist and war correspondent who keeps on running into Anakin’s assignments and popping up where he’s stationed and Anakin has to keep this idiot from getting himself killed/stop asking me annoying questions that criticize the Jedi and the government.

Dark!AU: A kind of morbid canon divergent fic where Padmé dies early and unexpectedly (Palps didn’t plan it). Anakin goes off the rails and Obi Wan agrees to go with him on a murder vengeance roadtrip to try and keep him from Falling or the Sith from getting to him. He kinda fails and they both Fall in a way and it ends with them hunting down Sidious’ players one by one. I’m not entirely sure I want to continue with this tho because it plays strongly on the Fridged Woman trope, which I can’t stand. I’d have to figure out how to give Padmé some sort of active role after her death...

re: Obi-Wan and Anakin's communication issues. I can think of a couple of times in tcw where Obi-Wan does make an effort to reach out to Anakin. during the Clovis arc he tries the whole "this is like me and Satine" and Anakin is not having it for a few reasons, and on Utapau he outright asks if Anakin wants to talk about Ahsoka and when he doesn't, he brings it up again anyway. both times, he does pretty much tell Anakin to "get over it" but it's also Anakin that puts up walls and shuts him out.

As yousaid, Obi-wan’s “reaching out” is about telling Anakin to get “over it”. That’sno a healthy exchanged by any means. Obi-wan does try to reach out to Anakinto understand him and listen without judgment, he does to try to convinceAnakin to do whatever he believes Anakin should be doing. And I wouldn’t count their conversation about Ahsoka’sdeparture as a healthy communication either because Obi-wan waits WEEKS beforehe “reaches out” to Anakin and he only does it after Anakin slips and saysAhsoka’s name.

To beclear, this is not Obi-wan’s fault in the sense he is doing on purpose. Obi-wanis simply unequipped do deal with Anakin (or anyone who is not a Jedi) in ahealthy way. Communication is an exchange, a process. Imagine a world wherethere’s only two languages (A and B). Then, imagine Obi-wan was taught onlylanguage A and that language B is inherently bad. Now, Obi-wan has to train achild who speaks nothing but language B to learn language A AND completelyforget language B. Also, Obi-wan cannot understand language B and is notallowed to learned it. Do you see the problem? It’s not that Obi-wan is tryingto hurt Anakin, but is inability to understand Anakin hindered Anakin’s abilityto understand Obi-wan which created a relationship where neither side iscapable of fully understanding the other because they are not speaking the samelanguage.

As forAnakin putting up walls, the same way it’s unfair to say this a result ofObi-wan’s cruelty, it’s also unfair to put this on Anakin because he was thechild. It was, regardless of why he failed, Obi-wan’s responsibility to raiseAnakin. Anakin shut down Obi-wan’s attempts because after 13 years together Anakinknew better than to expect Obi-wan to understand.

Obi-wan and Anakin’s relationship between TPM and AOTC was not the cozy,loving, friendly thing the fandom likes to pretend it was. It’s not hard tounderstand why Anakin would shut down all Obi-wan’s attempts after the tumultuous10 years they had spent together. Anakin’sreaction is pretty normal for someone who grew up like he did, when everytime you express your feelings you get told you are wrong to feel them you stopexpressing yourself. Again, it’s not that Obi-wan was intentionally trying tohurt Anakin, he simply didn’t know what else to do.

After 13 years of feeling misunderstood, is it really that surprisingthat Anakin doesn’t trust Obi-wan with his deepest feelings? I mean, that’s whyhe doesn’t tell Obi-wan about Padme, their marriage or his dreams. It’s notthat he thinks Obi-wan will hurt it, it’s because he doesn’t believe Obi-wan iscapable of understanding what Anakin is going through.

Both Obi-wan and Anakin feel the same about so many things but they don’tspeak the same language so they don’t communicate effectively. So much of itgets “lost in translation” and it puts them in a situation where they both knowthey care for each other but they don’t really *know* each other. And, as Ialways say, that’s the tragedy of their relationship. Everything they neededwas right there all along, they just couldn’t see it.
