Can we all just think about what this day has been for Adrien?
Imagine you wake up for the day, excited to have your bi-yearly scheduled lunch with your father, only to be told he has canceled on you once again and when you finally get the courage to speak your mind and talk to him, he interrupts you and tells you that you will be moving away from your home and beloved friends (with a person you hate) for an indefinite period of time. Imagine then, that you head to school, where you share a tender moment with someone who is definitely not just a friend and they give you the advice to talk to your father.
You then get home from school, where you are ambushed by your manipulative cousin, who is offering to trade places with you and help you out with your problem, only to discover he is scheming again. Before you can do anything about that, you have to go save the world with your superhero partner, who you've been feeling a little neglected by lately and for some reason, all those negative feelings seem to be manifesting right now during the fight. She then call in some reinforcements, and this new guy, that she keeps fawning over is giving you bad vibes (it's definitely not just jealously guys).
You save the day and head home, this time with the intent of actually confronting your father, only to be stopped by your superhero partner, who for some reason is looking for your civilian counterpart. She claims that she handed you a miraculous and you very quickly realize that your scheming and manipulative cousin, was scheming and manipulative.
You watch as your partner has a panic attack and do your best to calm her down and help her retain some miraculous. You hear her muffled cries through the door and when you go to check on her, she's gone. You find out that the villain you fight has got a hold of the miraculous and you go to find your partner.
You find her and manager to comfort her, all the while sharing a not-at-all platonic moment with her, and you prepare to fight the villain who has re-monikered himself and given himself new powers.
You see the rabbit miraculous and what looks like a future version of yourself show up and you realize that you will have to go through time in a time battle to reclaim the rabbit miraculous. You are given a rabbit miraculous to use and your very concept of space and time are altered as a result. After a lengthy, convoluted battle, you say goodbye to a good friend and decide to head to London to interrogate your aunt. The interrogation leading nowhere, you decide to head home only to be immediately called by your partner asking you to head to the wax museum and pose like a statue (which totally brings back some memories for you...). You finally get rid of that piece of paper in your bell and manage to capture the villain who you've been fighting for so long.
Except, the plan fails. The villain manages to get away with all of the Kwamis and now you have a weight on your conscious. You have just used against a person the power you vowed to use only for good. You are reminded of the significant power that you wield.
You once more arrive home and turn on the TV to try and distract yourself. Only to see that there's once more a problem that needs your help. You get there and see two people who have similar powers to you and your partner, but there's something wrong. Your partner asserts that they aren't akumatized, but you are wary. You learn that they are a version of you from a different universe, or at least a version of your power. You once more, are reminded the of ultimate destruction you have at your fingertips.
You come to understand that these doubles are in fact your partner and yourself from another universe. A universe, where the villain you are fighting is now your ally. Once assuring your friends are safe, you go after your double to fight them. When you meet to speak to them person to person and talk through your shared trauma. You learn that he too lost his precious mother, but he has no one to help him through it. You relive that loss together. You talk him down from making the wish that a part of you wants to make every single day. You begin to realize the version of you isn't bad, he's just hurting.
After ensuring the safety of other universes and giving a hopeful send of to your doubles, you finally, finally this time head home for the night.
Surveying around your room, you are reminded of the morning that feels like forever ago. You remember what your cousin said, what your good friend said. Emboldened by her words, you decide it's time to face your father. You go to his office where he's working and utter the words you never thought you would: I don't want to be a model anymore
Your father passively assents to this, and finally finally you are free.
You are filled with gratitude and this odd warmth that you don't spend too much time analyzing. You need to do something to thank the person who's advice got you what you so desperately wanted. You decide to call her up and thank her face-to-face.
You call her on the phone, which gets answered by her best friend, and then finally her and you give her your most sincere expression of gratitude, thanking her for everything she has done for you this past year.
As the warmth inside of your chest grows, you tell her you will do your best to pay it. You end the phone call with a smile on your face and a happy sigh.
Finally, with thoughts of your dear friend roaming around your mind, you fall asleep exhausted but happy.
This was all one day.

Guardian Cheng - Miraculous Ladybug AU
Another Guardian survived the temple’s destruction due to not being present when Feast attacked.  That Guardian, searching for other survivors but not finding any, trained an apprentice in the ways of the Miraculous Guardians and passed his Miracle Box down to her.  That successor passed the legacy on to her descendants until it came to Sabine Cheng.  When Sabine moved to Paris, married Tom Dupain, and had Marinette, she taught her daughter the same (somewhat independently evolved) ways that she had learned, and even had Marinette train with some of the Miraculouses.
When Fu gives Marinette the Ladybug Miraculous, unaware that she lives with a Guardian, Marinette tells her mom.  Sabine puts the earrings on herself and gives Marinette a Miraculous from her box, which she already has experience using, and they go out together to fight the Akuma.
After defeating Stoneheart, Sabine takes authority and brings Chat Noir aside so that he can tell her his identity, and she allows Marinette to share her identity with him.
Sabine confronts Fu over giving the two most powerful Miraculouses to two teenagers and making them fight supervillains.  When Fu says his piece, they agree to work together to train Marinette and Adrien and combat Hawk Moth.
Ladybug!Sabine offers motherly advice and care to the class, including Chloé and Lila.  Civilian!Sabine civilly clashes with Gabriel, André, and Audrey over their “parenting”.

part time soulmate, full time problem
chapter 4: the taste of champagne
thank you @miabrown007 and @wackus-bonkus-maximus for all your patience and support this chapter!
you can find the heart-wrenching art by @thewanderersminuet to accompany this chapter here
chapter summary:
Adrien meets Marinette's friends.
chapter excerpt:
"You go here every week?" he asked in clear awe, his gaze devouring the rows of stalls. "My family goes every week," Marinette corrected. "Sometimes we all go together, or I go myself if they can't get away from the bakery, or they go without me if I'm swamped with schoolwork or ak— a killer design." Adrien squeezed her hand and winked. Both their palms were sweaty from the summer heat, but Marinette didn't mind. "Your parents sound so supportive. It's too bad they were busy today." Marinette blinked. She hadn't even considered inviting them—it's not like she and Adrien were picking up the weekly groceries. And wasn't it too soon to meet the parents? She'd have to ask Alya. Meeting the parents had never been an option before. A flutter of excitement rushed into her chest as she pictured it: her Papa, asking him if he knew how to bake and Adrien shyly admitting he'd never been allowed to use the oven. Maman offering them both gentle advice and suggesting Papa might go check on an order in the back that didn't exist, to give them some space. Chat Noir looking at her baby pictures on the wind— Wait! Adrien was the one looking at her baby pictures!

Chat Noir/Adrien Agreste x GN!reader
"It's just– I've noticed that almost everyone in the Agreste family can fight, I find that strange. Do they all take classes or something?"
Chat cracked a smile and chuckled, his partner in crime never failed to make him laugh.
"I don't know, maybe you should ask him."
The advice had been a joke, that's all it was. He knew—or at least he thought—that Coccinelle couldn't actually ask him.
So when you—someone who is supposed to be a regular person with no superpowers or connections to Coccinelle— asks him the same question his red suited friend asked, he starts wondering if there was a possibility that you could really be his other half.
A universe in which you are the holder of the Ladybug miraculous and you go by Coccinelle.
Tumblr media
One question.
It had been one single question, a strange one at that, but a question nonetheless.
Adrien had been in the library studying with you. The sun peeking through the window and lighting up your figure. Your teeth chewed at your bottom lip, your hands fidgeting with your pencil. You was lost in thought, like you really wanted to say something, but the words were caught between your lips.
Your eyes would occasionally peer over at Adrien when you thought he wasn't looking, then find their way back to the book you clearly weren't reading.
Adrien didn't say a word, not wanting to pressure you. If you wanted to say something, you'd say it. So instead, Adrien wrote down some notes, trying to write it in a way that would make it easy for you to copy later (you'd need them if you spent the rest of the study session staring at him). After a brief moment of silence, you finally broke.
      "Hey, Adrien? Quick question."
His eyes lifted off the page to look at yours. He offered you a sweet smile and nodded his head, encouraging you to continue.
You smiled bashfully before that one question spilled from your mouth, "I know you take fencing but, can you...uh…fight?"
Adrien's smile faltered slightly and his eyes widened. A huge wave of deja vu hit him like a truck, and before he knew it, he wasn't staring at you anymore.
     That question…
     No...it couldn't be…
His mind faltered back to a few days ago when his cousin Felix had visited. He had caused quite a problem by imitating Adrien. It had resulted in a few of his friends getting akumatized.
There they were, on the roof of a Parisian building. Chat Noir was back to back with his partner, Coccinelle. Princess Fragrance, Reflecta, and Lady WiFi surrounded them. Felix, dressed in Adrien's signature clothing, was sitting not too far away from the heroic duo, observing the situation.
After a few moments of silence, Felix flipped off of a wall and kicked Lady WiFi's tablet out of her grasp, landing perfectly while the tablet landed in his hand. It had been no surprise to Chat, he knew full well what Felix was capable of. His cousin had always been interested in learning self defense, and had pulled many stunts like this effortlessly in the past.
What had surprised him was Coccinelle's low whistle with a question that followed, "Do you think Adrien can fight like that?"
Chat raised a brow at them, wondering why that thought had come to mind.
Coccinelle's smile quickly became bashful at the realization that someone had heard them, "It's just– I've noticed that almost everyone in the Agreste family can fight, I find that strange. Do they all take classes or something?" They tilted their head slightly.
Chat cracked a smile and chuckled, his partner in crime never failed to make him laugh.
They weren't exactly wrong though, a lot of members in his family could put up a good fight.
But of course, Chat Noir couldn't tell them that to ease their curiosity. To Coccinelle, Chat Noir has nothing to do with the Agrestes.
So instead, he simply shrugged and have them a cheshire grin,
"I don't know, maybe you should ask him."
The advice had been a joke, that's all it was. He knew—or at least he thought—that Coccinelle couldn't actually ask him. He always thought they were some random civilian that he had never met before. Paris was a huge city after all, they could've been anyone.
With this in mind, of course your strange question with strange timing could be some major coincidence.
If he hadn't known better, he'd assume you were just trying to start a conversation.
If this was a stand alone event, he'd think nothing of it.
But Adrien did know better, and this wasn't the first time he's had his suspicions.
Ignoring the fact that You and Coccinelle shared many physical qualities, the two often reminded him of each other.
When Coccinelle talked about their passions, they reminded him of you. The way your eyes lit up, your hand gestures, facial expressions— they felt so similar.
But his brain had dismissed it.
You weren't the only person in the world who would get expressive when talking about something they loved. It was a coincidence.
Then there was that time where Adrien was watching you sketch in your notebook during class. You seemed to be struggling with whatever you were sketching. Your eyes narrowed at the drawing, as if challenging the art to argue with you. Your nose scrunched up as your lips formed a tight frown. Determination burned within your eyes, nearly burning holes into your paper.
Adrien had to double take because a part of his brain had thought Coccinelle was sitting in that school desk. They often did that too when trying to find a solution to the akuma. Chat had found it adorable, staring at them with admiration knowing that whenever Coccinelle had that look, a storm was brewing.
Adrien found himself thinking the same thing at that moment when he saw you. He would've looked into it more, but many people scrunch their noses up in frustration. Heck, he's seen Nino do it as well. It wasn't anything to look into, just a coincidence.
     Just a coincidence.
He found himself thinking that a lot when it came to you and Coccinelle, more than he should.
    You two smiled the same?
    Just a coincidence.
You both had the same laugh?
    Just a coincidence.
Have the same interests, personality traits, goals, reactions to memes, witty remarks, and voices?

     Just a coincidence.
His brain would reject any thought that tried to link the two together, chanting the word coincidence over and over until he finally dismissed the idea of you and Coccinelle being one in the same.
Instead, he'd be reminded of the differences you shared, like how Coccinelle was braver but you were funnier.
However, as time passed, he found himself drawing to a blank when it came to spotting the difference between you two.
It couldn't be possible, could it?
     "Adrien?"
Adrien snapped out of his daze and realized he had been staring at you, who was now nervously sweating for reasons Adrien was unsure of.
"You ok?" You asked hesitantly, offering a shy chuckle. Adrien stayed silent before turning back to his book. He couldn't look at you or else he'd find himself trying to picture you with a red and black polka-dot mask on.
"I'm fine." He mumbled, "And yeah, I can fight." He heard you whisper "I knew it" under your breath before you both went back to studying .
After that, the library was filled with silence, the only sound being the chirp of pages turning.

A Chloe Redemption + Lila Salt but no redemption for that bitch!
The way I have seen it from seasons for Chloe she was getting better but it turn out to be dark on season 5 like wth. So I want was a Chloe Redemption Prompt if that would happen if anyone is interested to making this. I would gradually read it cause for me If I make it I don't have time to start one due to me having stories on Wattpad to get updated.
How about when Chloe had to go out of school just to call her mother about Marinette's accepting her offer instead of Gabriel. But to Chloe she notice Lila Rossi taking her wig that caught her off guard she took a quick photo or a video clip of it so she spread rumors about juicy stuffs about Rossi as a payback for messing with Dupain-Cheng only she can do that not her.
Chloe went to follow Lila and found her in the Paul Bert well that is concerning for her she is pretty sure the principal back in her school has their contract maybe showing this video clip to the Principal might spice things up for not following the protocal for the school as he should be doing unless if he wants to be get fired from her father the way she had seen it from the shadows of the principal expelling Dupain-Cheng without a hearing or checking the school CCTVs since he announced it was broken but it wasn't when she checked it herself.
Chloe had hired private investigators to find anything about Lila Rossi and found plenty of criminal records this might be good for her and Dupain-Cheng but she wasn't very fond of Adrien's advice towards Dupain-Cheng. As she can also see that Dupain-Cheng doesn't like Adrien anymore despite of Cesaire tormenting Dupain-Cheng alot. She even notice Dupain-Cheng getting comfy towards Felix while Kagami is with Luka. Since in secret Chloe is dating Alix they decided to play along to see who are real or fake friends for them.

Lila made some investments
In "Protection", Lila reveals herself in a lie by explaining how she has always created the illusion in which she makes it seem like she helps others, when in reality it is everyone else who has been manipulated into helping her. However, back in "Chameleon", after Lila comes to terms with the fact that Marinette would not would not heed her warning and halt any attempts to expose her and all her lies, we see Lila take some time throughout series to make some "investments" to help in her fight against Marinette.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Times when we saw Lila go out of her way to baby sit Alya and Nino's younger siblings in "Time tagger", participate in the special video message for Adrien in "Felix", or attend Sabine's class in "Quilin", were far from moments when Lila was willing to be considerate enough to help others, they were an investment , and sadly, Kagami was now one of them.
(Back in "Perfection", we find out that Lila had come into contact with Kagami, offering both her friendship as well as advice on friendships.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If Lila was ever to continue her façade and plans to ruin Marinette's life, she needed to not only get closer to those who were the closest to Marinette, but also convince them that she really was just as much of a good person as she pretended to be, resulting in Marinette's words falling on deaf ears if and when she attempted to expose her or tell others she was a fraud, because if she did, how could they believe such horrible things about Lila when they genuinely believe they have seen first hand how kind and considerate she can be.
In regards to Kagami, Lila's plan was simple, to befriend the girl(Kagami) who had lived much of her life in solitude and without friends, while also helping her better understand relationships and bonds, that is, so long as it was under her terms. Lila could have focused her attention on anyone else, but unlike everyone else, Kagami had something no one else in Marinette’s social circle had, a fragile innocence, a lack of experience with friendships, a connection to Marinette that could be twisted into a tragedy(more here), a former relationship with Adrien and a great sense of shame and unfamiliarity in simply living with her own complex emotions, viewing them as a weakness in her pressured life to maintain the image of perfection her family expected her to be.
Lila knew Kagami cherished her friendship with Marinette, but if Lila was to ever sever that connection, she needed to seclude Kagami and convince her that she was the only one in her life to confide in and trust, and that all other friendships in her life were meaningless. Which is why of all the things Lila could have talked to Kagami about in "Perfection", she chose the one thing that not only made Kagami vulnerable, but also damaged the friendships she already had, which was the concept that there were requirements Kagami needed to fulfill in order to NOT be considered someone's friend, requirements that Lila carefully worded on a list to ensure that she couldn't meet, but also make Kagami believe she fit well enough to believe she was never worthy enough to be considered Marinette's friend.
(Some of the things on the list specified that a person does not consider you a friend if they 1. never pick up the phone, 2. use a different language only their real friends will understand. Lila always picked up the phone and she was always straight forward when talking to Kagami, even if it was all a lie)
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Although Kagami's situation was resolved near the end of "Perfection", Kagami never realized that the list Lila gave her was absurd, only that a simple misunderstanding had occurred between her and Marinette. Regardless of Lila's plan failing to sever Kagami's bond with Marinette in that moment, the situation still played out in her favor as Kagami's realization near the end of "Perfection" left her willing to accept Lila's friendship with open arms.
Although no one but Kagami knew it was Lila who created the list, it did not matter anymore, it fulfilled it's purpose by making Lila appear as someone who was willing to be what Kagami desperately wanted, a friend who would reach out to her and listen to her.
(Ladybug understood what Kagami desperately wanted, to be heard)
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, when Kagami accepted Lila's friendship, it was Lila who placed herself as a friend with a far deeper connection to her than anyone else, and whom Kagami should consider above all others as she alone proclaimed that she viewed Kagami not just as a friend, but a sister. Lila wanted Kagami to feel as if the bond they had as friends was so strong they actually considered each other family, something Kagami had never experienced before but would have likely greatly appreciated and viewed highly.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In "Protection", Lila continued to present herself as someone whom Kagami could really talk to, someone who could always be there for her, and although Lila did not commit to these things wholeheartedly, for someone like Kagami who had lived a lonely life, it was enough just to see a "friend" like Lila show up for even a little in the midst of her busy schedule.
(Kagami appreciates Lila seeing her after practice)
Tumblr media
The more Lila was present in little ways, the more she could slowly slip in how Marinette hated her for no good reason and make Kagami question why Marinette, or anyone for that matter, would ever hate someone as "good" and "trusting" as Lila.
Tumblr media
The moment Kagami felt comfortable enough to tell Lila of the plans everyone set to help Marinette, was the moment Lila proceeded with her next attempt to sever Kagami's friendship with Marinette, but in order to do this, Lila needed Kagami to feel ashamed of herself, and what better way than by resurfacing the pain of her lost love with Adrien. Lila knew Kagami would never intentionally hurt someone, much less Marinette, but she would if she was akumatized into someone she was not, all Lila had to do was direct Kagami's negative emotions towards Marinette, a chance that came sooner than expected as Kagami confided in her something she could not tell anyone else, her rekindled love for Adrien(more here).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As Lila heard Kagami speak out about her struggles and frustrations, Lila simply looked on and smiled, pleased to see Kagami so vulnerable and secluded from the others as she felt her feelings would only trouble everyone else amidst their efforts to help Marinette and Adrien. Lila had Kagami right where she wanted, all that was left was to give Kagami one more little push, a reminder of how "perfect" she was in the situation.
At the beginning of "Protection", Lila told Kagami she was perfect, and although Marinette and Ladybug are helping Kagami realize that her imperfections were nothing to be ashamed of, it was Lila who reminded Kagami of the duty she had to her family, that she is perfect and must always be perfect, but she would never be truly perfect if she did not cast aside the importance she felt towards Marinette's friendship, the very friendship that led her to lose what she wanted most, Adrien.
(As the akuma approached Kagami, Lila once again tells Kagami how perfect she is, reminding her that she is not like others and must not feel upset, she must suppress her feelings and pain, but in doing so, Kagami's pain would worsen and further attract the akuma.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
All of Lila's lies towards Kagami narrowed down to one simple suggestion, that Marinette lied to her, manipulated her and everyone else, stole Adrien from her and took what could have been a happy and meaningful future, so as a result, she had every right to go against Marinette to take everything back
Near the end of "Protection", as Lila realized Kagami had come back to her senses and was now confronting her about the lies she spoke about Marinette, Lila was still able to convince Kagami that she had no intention to hurt anyone, because regardless of the horrible things she said before about Marinette, it was in this very moment that Lila’s little investment came into play.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lila did not deny the things she said about Marinette, Kagami knows now that Lila does not like Marinette, but the moment Kagami spoke about how she loved her just as much as Marinette, was the moment Lila knew that what little time she spent in pretending to be a good friend to Kagami had paid off.
Tumblr media
Lila genuinely made Kagami believe she cared for her, that there was too much importance in their "friendship", as such, it was not worth losing so quickly, so as a result, Kagami did not end things between them right away, instead, she offered Lila a chance to stay friends if her feelings were genuine, and of course, Lila accepted, not because her feelings were genuine, but because she was not done with Kagami.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kagami made it clear she was not a puppet for Lila to use, but to Lila, another chance will come along where Kagami can still be used, so long as she is still innocent enough to believe that what they have is a real friendship and not a toxic one, something Lila had ironically previously warned her about within her lie about Marinette.

Several ways to rewrite the Gabriel-Marinette relationship, so the pair actually interact, and thus have more pathos with the reveal:
Gabriel Agreste is an old family friend of the Dupain-Chengs. Marinette has a lot of respect for “Uncle Gabe”, and goes to him for a lot of fashion advice. (Maybe twits The lovesquare a bit? Marinette is now crushing HARD on her childhood friend Adrien, while Adrien just sees her as his bestie? Upside of this one - Marinette and Chloé are probably friends.)
Gabriel offers Marinette an internship after she wins his hat contest. Marinette jumps at the chance, and finds a mentor who seems to be open with her, encouraging of her creative freedom and independence, and is supportive of her feelings (not saying whether he is or not, but compared to the paranoid Fu …)
Gabriel has an anonymous account on an online forum, where he offers advice to young designers. One of them, BothBread&FashionHavePaine, has truly piqued his interest, and they have been messaging privately as he helps her cultivate her talent.
Those three are just off the top of my head, but point is, there are options.
-
Ha!
No but really the mentor/apprentice thing is a GREAT option and I love it.

IOTA Reviews: Migration
Tumblr media
You know, for a while, I thought Luka was one of the smartest characters in the show, and the fact that he's hightailing it out of Paris in this episode only continues to prove my point.
Let's get into the thirteenth episode of Miraculous Ladybug's fifth season: Migration
We start off with Marinette running over to the Liberty (with her friends laughing behind her back like the supportive people they are) and tries to talk with Luka about her relationship with Adrien once they're in private. Luka is pretty supportive, and it's a nice scene. Marinette then bumps into Adrien, who also wants to talk with Luka, and while the two try to get unstuck, we get a nice visual of Luka seeing the two as Ladybug and Cat Noir, which is there to remind the audience that he's known who both of them are ever since “Wishmaker”.
Adrien then talks to Luka about how he's worried something is keeping Marinette from being honest about her feelings. Luka gives him some advice on how just because he doesn't know everything about Marinette, it doesn't make her feelings for him less valid, and vice versa.
After Adrien leaves, we get an appearance from everyone's favorite deadbeat dad, Jagged Stone. He asks Luka how he can be a better father like he didn't miss years of child support, but all Luka really says is that he needs to spend time with his damn family. Of course, what I like about this scene is that it avoids the usual narrative pitfall of trying to say that Jagged and Anarka, Luka's mom, should get back together, and instead shows Jagged developing feelings for his agent, Penny.
Speaking of, after Jagged leaves, Penny comes in to come to Luka for advice. Okay, is Luka just the Dr. Phil of this show's universe? Penny talks to Luka about her sudden feelings for Jagged Stone.
Penny: No, I don't know why I'm in love with your father. He's disorganized, childish, selfish, and musically speaking, he's no David Bowie. Truth be told, your dad's a walking disaster. So why do I love him?
Luka: Does he make you happy, Penny?
Penny: Yeah. I just can't figure out why!
It's almost like this show will randomly pair people up at the drop of a hat. But hey, at least Luka hasn't asked if Kagami is single yet.
Before Penny leaves, Bob Roth, Jagged's producer, demands to know where he is, as he needs to record a new album. Bob learns that Jagged had children with Anarka (ignoring the potential scandal it could create), so Anarka promptly throws him out of the boat in a scene that I'm pretty sure is meant to be a reference to that one running gag from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
youtube
Either way, Jazz's scream was funnier.
Kitty Section then practices their latest song about how you don't have to be rich, because even the songs in this show aren't exactly subtle with their messages. Bob somehow gets back on the Liberty completely dry, and offers the band a contract.
Bob: How would you like to sign a contract with me?
Luka: Actually, Bob, you already offered to sign us... Marinette: And you never followed up. Did you forget?
Bob: Huh? Uh... of course! I remember! I was just waiting for the right reason—uh, I mean, the right time! I was waiting for the right time to have you guys sign the contract!
My God, even the characters in this show want to forget it used to have good episodes.
Anarka throws Bob off again, where she and Luka talk about how everyone deserves a second chance and that change is possible.
youtube
Yeah, funny how that message almost never came up with Chloe, Lila, and Felix last season, isn't it? And given that they're going to use Bob as an example of this lesson, I don't think it's going to be a positive one. So right after Luka generously decided to give Bob a second chance, Bob offers them a new contract to sign... and as soon as he does, he screws them all over thanks to a lot of fine print they didn't stop to read.
Ivan: He can fire us whenever he wants?
Bob: Yep, and I just did, by the way.
Rose: The name Kitty Section belongs to him?!
Bob: Yep. It’s ugly, but it’s mine. Marinette: He owns everything you’ve made and will make over the next thousand years!? Bob: Gotta cover all bases.
Zoe: Marinette's costumes, the music video Nino shot, the website Mylene runs...
Bob: All mine!
Adrien: And you can’t even start another band together?
Bob: Course not, that’d be unfair competition! EVERYTHING belongs to me! Everything you are, everything you say, everything that’s in your hearts belongs to me!
See, kids? This is why you should never trust bad people. It doesn't matter if they say they want to improve. They just want to trick you and ruin your life, so if you're ever wronged by anyone, that person is never able to redeem themselves, especially if they're rich. As we all know, rich people are far worse than insane supervillains who want to rewrite reality. Just ask the biggest monster in the show, Chloe Bourgeois.
So yeah, Luka's optimism being taken advantage of is enough to attract the attention of Monarch, who attempts to akumatize him into Silencer again. Monarch realizes that Luka knows Ladybug and Cat Noir's identities (why he didn't think to look into it, given Viperion's powers, is left unanswered), and angrily smashes his guitar to free himself of Monarch's influence.
Tumblr media
So not only did he stop himself from getting akumatized, he's also one step closer to becoming a true rock star.
Somehow, Bob thinks only keeping Luka on board would mean he wouldn't hate him, but Luka isn't buying it. Bob is shocked that Luka wouldn't want to work for an asshole like him as Luka tears the contract in half, but Bob has backups. Monarch decides to settle on Bob instead, akumatizing him into Gold Record.
Tumblr media
Gold Record's design is... okay. It's still better than Sole Destroyer, and it's definitely better than Moolak. The gold coloring looks nice, and the euro symbol on the record is a nice visual. His powers are pretty much just a combination of Pixelator, the Collector, and Truth's powers, transforming people into records who sing their true feelings while using the Horse Miraculous' Voyage to throw the records into space. Nothing too original there, but it's a good metaphor for sleazy music producers, and it works for this story.
Rose and Anarka are the first of Gold Record's victims, and in a hurry, Luka lets Adrien know he knows he's Cat Noir, giving him a place to hide. Just as Juleka is hit by Gold Record, Ladybug and Cat Noir arrive on the scene. While Cat Noir holds off Gold Record, Ladybug tries to come up with a plan.
Ladybug summons her Lucky Charm, getting a knitting needle. She realizes her plan will need to involve using Luka as bait. Luka is forced to reveal that he knows who Ladybug and Cat Noir are, and what will happen if Gold Record gets him, setting up a tough choice that will force Ladybug to rethink her plan... and then the next scene happens, where Luka lets himself get hit, where Ladybug manages send Gold Record's record flying with a makeshift bow and arrow created from the knitting needle and a nearby fiddle, which Cat Noir immediately Cataclysms.
Ladybug de-evilizes the Akuma, uses Miraculous Ladybug to fix the damage, and gives Bob Roth a Magical Charm that even he knows is useless at this point. Ladybug and Cat Noir decide to call it a day and let Anarka throw Bob Roth out again.
Luka reveals that he knows Ladybug and Cat Noir's identities (because once again, sharing that information with your friends is totally fine for some reason), and that he can't stay in Paris. After revealing that he had Fang eat all of Bob's contracts so Luka isn't bound by them anymore, Jagged offers to take Luka around the world to finally make up for years of absence while Luka makes Juleka the new leader of Kitty Section. And so the episode ends with the Couffaine family sharing a hug while Luka gives one last look to his friends Marinette and Adrien.
This episode was just average, all things considered. The plot and the lesson it was setting out to teach, while not terrible, felt a little tacked on. It was if the writers were trying to acknowledge the stuff that happened with Chloe and wanted to show an example of redemption arc done right in the case of Jagged. It falls flat because once again, more focus is given to showing how easy it is to be screwed over trusting someone than showing the benefits to trusting someone, especially since Bob is already an outlandish villain we already have a lot of reasons to hate.
I'm also mixed on the handling of Luka here. While I'm glad Marinette isn't being forced to learn a lesson here, I don't get why Luka had to be the one to be taken advantage of. He's already aware of how easy it is for Monarch to learn his secrets, so it feels weird that he lets himself and his friends get taken advantage of so easily. Outside of the scene with Ladybug's Lucky Charm, I don't get why he needed to tell the others the stuff he knew. I can sort of see why he'd tell Adrien, but why would he think telling his friends he knows who Ladybug and Cat Noir are wouldn't endanger them too?
Speaking of that, despite being established for almost an entire season, we really don't see enough of Marinette and Adrien reacting to Luka revealing that he knows who they are. Marinette only gets a few lines, and Adrien doesn't even get to say anything. While I am glad that Marinette and Adrien aren't dominating the plot for once, it feels weird that we don't get to see their reactions to something so shocking, especially with how often the identity rule has been enforced.
On the other hand, the writing is still handled a lot better than usual. I like how Monarch chooses to change his strategy to focus on Luka halfway through the episode, and the idea of the risk using Luka for Ladybug's plan brings is an interesting one, even if they don't really go anywhere with it. The running gag with Bob constantly getting thrown off the Liberty is a funny one, and it proves you can actually write slapstick that doesn't involve humiliating Marinette. Who knew?
As a whole, while I think this is the best episode of the season so far, this episode still has its fair share of problems.
THE BIGGEST IDIOT OF THE EPISODE IS... LUKA
Tumblr media
Not counting the time Marinette got the award in my review of the Shanghai Special, we have the first character this season to get the Biggest Idiot Award twice. For someone who is usually smarter than the other characters, Luka made quite a few bad choices this episode. He decided to trust Bob Roth after he screwed him and his friends over in “Silencer”, he didn't think to read the contract he was offered, and after being endangered by what Monarch knows now, he decided to tell his friends and family that he knows who Ladybug and Cat Noir are, potentially putting them all in danger too. Yeah, the next few episodes will probably just ignore it, but there's always a chance Monarch could try another Optigami, even if he doesn't have the Peacock Miraculous anymore.
And with that, I'm officially done with the first half of Season 5. What do I think of it? Well, I think Immortan Joe said it best:
youtube
Yeah, this season was pretty boring, all things considered. To be perfectly honest, I struggled here more than I did last season because I wasn't sure what to say about half of the episodes I watched. There was almost nothing of substance these past thirteen episodes, and I could barely say anything other than “this episode is okay” or “this episode is bad”. Whenever I had ideas, they were usually extensions to things I've already talked about, like the Marinette angst, the historical and cultural inaccuracies, and the villains genuinely being incompetent. If you showed someone a few episodes of Season 1 and this season, outside of Monarch's new appearance, it'd be pretty hard for them to tell the difference.
But hey, maybe things will pick up in the second half of the season. Hell, maybe the next episode will be even better than this one, and... huh. Does anyone else hear an ominous whistling in the background?

Chapter 13: A Nightmare Situation
Marinette only knew Emilie through what others said about her. She knew what she looked like, both from the painting and the short visit to her healing pod in the basement.
But neither M. Agreste nor Adrien liked to talk about her, so Marinette didn’t know much about the woman she was trying to save. Was she as warm as she looked in her painting or as reserved as M. Agreste was? Had she played with Adrien when he was young, or had she had a nanny take that responsibility for her?
All of this was left as a mystery to Marinette. But perhaps the woman standing in the middle of her room could solve it for her.
You can read the rest on AO3 or below!
That night, an akuma attacked. It was after Marinette had finished the work Nathalie had assigned her, after she’d answered her parents’ concerned questions (apparently, word of The Kiss had spread) and assured them that she was okay. She’d reluctantly gone to bed, following Nathalie’s advice and Gabriel’s orders to rest.
At first, it went well. She’d only thought of Adrien, Golden Bug, or the kiss a few times— okay, maybe “a few” meant a few dozen here, but could you blame her? It had been a very long, eventful, frighteningly revealing day. Her main concern now was staying friends with Adrien and avoiding the depressing thought that he couldn’t love her, not really, because she wasn’t just Marinette. She was also Bluewing, and when she’d checked up on him in that form earlier... well, she’d be happy to never see that particular look on his face again.
No, Adrien wouldn’t love her if he knew she was Bluewing. He only had a crush on Marinette, and that would go away soon enough.
Marinette had rolled over after that thought, glowering at her pillow and feeling upset that Nathalie had spilled his secret to her and ruined Marinette’s innocent belief that she and Adrien were just normal friends.
But... Adrien did look at her in such a strangely soft way sometimes. And when his father offered to give him a reward, all he’d asked for was more time with Marinette. He’d waited up for her when she was late for school; he’d shown off in the fencing match for her; he looked for her approval and told jokes to make her smile. And he smiled, too, whenever she gave in and laughed at one of his silly puns.
Maybe she was a fool for not putting the pieces together by herself.
But that didn’t change the fact that she was in love with Golden Bug.
It was easy to see that she’d fallen for the wrong boy. It made no sense for her to pursue her enemy, not any more than it would make sense to let the broken Miraculous continue poisoning her rather than reversing its effects with the cure.
She had to give up on him. She had to move on.
But she couldn’t exactly date Adrien, either, unless Nathalie convinced M. Agreste to change his mind. And she refused to use him as a rebound. He was too important to her.
As the sky darkened and the streetlights outside turned on, Marinette gave up on figuring out the situation and closed her eyes, determined to get some rest. She hadn’t asked for a break, but even she could admit that she needed one. It would be good for her to get some extra sleep tonight, at the very least.
Soon, however, it became clear there would be no sweet dreams for her tonight.
There weren’t any warning signs; no screams sounded from on the street, no blasts of light and smoke lit up the sky. For once, Paris was as peaceful as the city could get.
No, the only warning Marinette got as she slipped into a fitful sleep was the gentle sound of a lullaby reaching her ears.
And after that, it was already too late.
__*__*__*__*__
Marinette only knew Emilie through what others said about her. She knew what she looked like, both from the painting and the short visit to her healing pod in the basement.
But neither M. Agreste nor Adrien liked to talk about her, so Marinette didn’t know much about the woman she was trying to save. Was she as warm as she looked in her painting or as reserved as M. Agreste was? Had she played with Adrien when he was young, or had she had a nanny take that responsibility for her?
All of this was left as a mystery to Marinette. But perhaps the woman standing in the middle of her room could solve it for her.
Emilie Agreste wasn’t supposed to be here. She wasn’t supposed to be awake, much less out of her pod. But she was, and when Marinette realized who the woman with the golden hair and gentle expression was, all she could do was stare for a moment.
“Hello?” she asked. Her voice came out creaky and tired.
Emilie nodded at her. “Marinette. I heard that you broke my son’s heart today.”
Marinette gaped. “What? No, no, I would never hurt him! I love Adrien!”
Emilie’s lips thinned. “Not enough. And I thought you’d be better. You’ve been given such power, and what have you done with it? You fell in love with the boy keeping my son from getting his mother back. You dress up like a hero, but you might as well be on the other side. What good have you done?”
Emilie raised one hand, beckoning Marinette to stand in front of her. Her face was beautiful, but cold. There was no sympathy in her eyes as she stared down at the one who had failed to save her or protect her son. At her shoulder, Gabriel appeared, glaring down at Marinette with his wife.
“You hurt him,” he accused Marinette. “You will only ever hurt him. Stay away from my son. Do not listen to Nathalie’s blind optimism. She is wrong.”
“Give back the amok,” Emilie commanded. “You do not deserve to wear it. You have already abused its power, along with my Miraculous. You will not get them back. You have failed.”
Marinette backed up, finding herself cornered against the wall as Emilie and Gabriel approached with outstretched hands.
“I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to! I’ll be better!” she cried.
“Give me the ring, Marinette,” Gabriel hissed.
Shaking, Marinette reached to pull it off her finger, but she found nothing there.
“What?” she gasped. “No, where could it be?”
“You lost it,” Emilie lamented. “You were never worthy of it in the first place.”
“You brought harm to my son,” Gabriel boomed. “Now who knows who controls him? He is in danger because of you.”
Marinette flattened herself against the wall, but it crumbled, and she fell backwards. Emilie reached out to save her, pulling her back onto the floor of her room. Once there, she pulled Marinette closer, holding onto the collar of her nightshirt and bringing their faces closer together.
“What do you really want?” she asked, her eyes narrow as they gazed into Marinette’s, piercingly cold. “Who are you fighting for?”
Emilie shoved Marinette into the center of the room, and she fell. When she pushed herself up from the floor, she saw that Gabriel was gone, and only Emilie was left in the room. Her skin had grown paler, her cheeks sunken, and her eyes dimmed.
“There is only one way to save Adrien,” she said, and her voice was shallow. “Only one. Do not trust Gabriel. He is not what he says he is.”
Emilie stepped backwards, and a glass coffin appeared behind her— her healing pod, from the basement. The room darkened, and two rose bushes sprang up from the floor on either side of the coffin, spreading quickly and cutting Marinette off from Emilie.
“You must do the right thing,” Emilie said insistently. Now, her voice was only a whisper. “You need to wake up. Repair the damage, before it’s too late. You must save my son. Save him—”
The coffin seemed to grow a bit bigger, and the thorny rose bushes forced Emilie backwards. She fell into the coffin, and Marinette screamed along with her.
A lid fell onto the coffin, trapping Emilie inside. She pounded on the glass, weak but insistent, as a chasm grew between her and Marinette. The roses filled the air with their poisonous perfume, and Marinette choked on the scent. She stumbled backwards, clinging to the ladder of her bed, and watched in horror as Emilie tried in vain to escape her prison.
The roses grew faster, wrapping their thorny branches tightly around the pod as Emilie continued pounding on the glass. Each thud came a little louder than the last, a little faster, and Marinette’s heart beat in sync with the rhythm. But soon, the roses covered the coffin, and Emilie could be seen no longer.
The cloying smell grew stronger, and Marinette felt suffocated, like she had when the brooch’s poison was at its worst. She couldn’t breathe, couldn’t move, couldn’t save herself or Adrien or his mother in time. It was too late. She’d failed.
Emilie’s scream lingered in Marinette’s ears as she hid her face from the coffin, and tears fell down her cheeks. With a deafening crash, the glass shattered under the pressure of the rose, and the coffin dissolved into dust.
Marinette sat up in bed, panting.
“Marinette!”
She jolted as a heavy weight landed by her feet. Marinette rubbed her eyes and desperately looked around in the darkness, trying to figure out what was going on. Where was she? Had that all been a dream?
“Marinette, please snap out of it! It’s just a nightmare. It can’t hurt you. Whatever you saw, I promise it wasn’t real.”
The voice sounded familiar. Too familiar. Marinette’s stomach dropped as she realized that either her nightmare was still ongoing, or Golden Bug had broken into her room and was cautiously crouching on the far edge of her bed.
“Golden Bug?” she gasped out. She pinched herself hard and winced in pain.
The shadowy figure on her bed nodded. “Yes. I’m sorry for breaking in, but you got hit by an akuma, bad. I could hear you screaming, so I tried to wake you up by knocking at your window, and when that didn’t work, I came in through the trapdoor instead. But I tripped over a vase that was by the door and broke it. Sorry.”
“No, don’t be,” Marinette gasped. “I think the crash woke me up. Thank you.”
Golden Bug’s eyes flashed in the darkness. “You’re welcome. I’m glad you’re not affected by the akuma’s power anymore; this is a nasty one. I got hit, too, before I transformed. Hawk Moth isn’t playing fair tonight; I don’t even know where the akuma is yet. But you can see its handiwork everywhere. A lot of the nightmares, you can see what they are. I guess yours was a bit different.”
“It, um, dissolved on its own. That was part of it.” She avoided looking at the spot where Emilie’s coffin had been. “I think it might have been close to over. Maybe that’s how you were able to snap me out of it.”
Golden Bug nodded, but Marinette was busy. Her mind raced as she tried to figure out what was happening. He said that this was an akuma? That didn’t make sense. Hawk Moth needed her to fight with him. He was supposed to tell her before creating an akuma!
But he hadn’t done that, earlier. Dark Cupid had been a total surprise, and look how poorly it had gone! Had he learned nothing?
Or was this some kind of message to her? “I know you’re not ready or able to fight with me tonight, but that’s okay. I don’t need you. All you do is lose, anyway.” Was that what M. Agreste was saying with this akuma, if it was an akuma?
“Hey, are you sure this is really an akuma?” Marinette asked. “You said you can see the nightmares. You just meant that figuratively, right?”
Golden Bug shook his head. “No, you can really see what they are. There’s a trash can chasing some poor dude out there. And the Eiffel Tower is rocketing up into space, but at the same time, it’s right where it should be. Plus there are zombies. It’s all really weird,” he said, scratching his head. “Everyone is asleep, so there hasn’t even been an akuma alert sent out yet. Al— the Goldenblogger must be asleep, too, because she hasn’t posted anything yet. Like I said, it’s a really weird akuma.”
Marinette was quiet for a moment.
“Well, you won’t do any good by staying here with me,” she finally told Golden Bug. “Shouldn’t you go find the akuma?”
Golden Bug straightened. “Oh! Yes, of course. Sorry. I just wanted to check on you, before I left. You’re sure you’re okay?”
Marinette swallowed and clenched her fists to ignore the slight tremors that were shaking her hands. “Yes,” she lied. “I’m fine.”
Golden Bug hesitated. She couldn’t see what he was doing, but it felt like he was staring at her, straining to see through her words. “Okay,” he said, and got up, pulling himself through the trapdoor with his yo-yo. “Be careful, Marinette. Stay out of trouble. I’d hate it if the akuma hurt you again.”
A soft melody floated through the air, and Golden Bug looked around.
“Goodbye,” he said, and closed the door as he left to continue his search.
Left alone in the darkness, Marinette frantically checked her right hand for Adrien's ring. Finding it there, she let out a relieved sigh.
Now, to get rid of the last remnant of Golden Bug's presence: the flutters he'd given her heart.
“Can you believe this idiot,” she tried telling herself, keeping herself company with her voice. “He drops in on civilians in the middle of the night and scares them awake from their nightmares. And then refuses to leave until he knows they’re okay.” She scoffed. “What a villain. I’ll be over him in no time.”
Aggressively, she flipped the covers away from herself and crossed her arms.
“Yeah, right. I’m just as cursed in love as I was before he dropped by.”
She climbed out of bed and turned on the light. Then she walked over to the window, peered outside, and watched as Golden Bug and Chat Grise chased a blue-skinned boy flying on a pillow away from her roof.
There really was an akuma.
Marinette’s heart sank. What should she do? She was supposed to be on break, but Hawk Moth could probably use some help from Bluewing to face Golden Bug and Chat Grise.
Maybe if she called Nathalie, she’d know what to do. She couldn’t call Hawk Moth, after all, he was clearly busy.
Marinette unlocked her phone, quickly found the number Nathalie had given her “for work purposes” at the start of her internship, and called. After an agonizing minute, the call went to voicemail. Frowning, Marinette hung up and checked the time. It was just past midnight, but since it was mostly for emergencies, this number was supposed to reach Nathalie’s work phone at any time of the day. Had she been caught by the akuma, too? She hoped Ms. Sancoeur was all right!
A few minutes later, Marinette tried again, just in case. Unfortunately, the call went to voicemail again. Marinette left a quick explanation of her situation and asked Nathalie to tell M. Agreste that she would’ve helped if she could have before hanging up.
This would have been easier if she’d had the Peacock with her.
Frustrated, Marinette put a hand on her hip and sighed. There wasn’t really anything she could do, except maybe climb down from her balcony and run to the Agreste mansion, but if Gabriel had wanted her in this fight, he should have contacted her about it by now.
Marinette hated how useless she felt. It reminded her of the start of Hawk Moth’s mission, when she’d been terrified of the akumas and completely reliant on Golden Bug and Chat Grise to save her from them.
Back then, she’d managed her anxiety by watching Alya’s broadcasts. Hoping it would help her now, Marinette opened her desktop and pulled the Goldenblog up. She watched as Golden Bug and Chat Grise fought off their personal nightmares — you really can see them, she thought — and then the akuma, Sandboy.
They won, of course, and they probably would have even if Bluewing had been there to back up the akuma, but Marinette couldn’t help but wonder, in a disgruntled manner, if things could have been different had Gabriel just trusted her to help him.
She kept watching Alya’s stream until after the heroes had left the scene, Alya had given her final comments, and the screen went black. Then she crawled back into bed and fell back asleep, tossing and turning fitfully for the rest of the night.
__*__*__*__*__
In the morning, Marinette got ready for the day as if she was a robot. She mechanically selected a pair of jeans and shirt, she brushed her hair without flinching as her comb caught on knots, and she barely spared a thought for which shoes she should wear. The only time she broke the rhythm of her routine was when she paused before she could step on the section of the floor where Emilie’s coffin — healing pod — had been in her nightmare.
She knew it hadn’t been real, but for some reason, she couldn’t bring herself to set foot there. Last night was still too fresh in her mind. Plus, she hated the reminders of how powerless she’d been and of the fate that had nearly claimed her, which she still had to save Emilie from.
It had just been a nightmare, but Emilie was right. She had to do more. She had to be better.
Downstairs, Adrien was waiting by himself at the table.
Feeling a shock run through her, Marinette halted on the last stair. Her eyes were wide as she looked at him, and she felt a light blush cover her cheeks as she remembered what Nathalie had revealed to her yesterday.
If she was still processing the kiss and all that had happened afterwards, though, Adrien didn’t seem anywhere near as affected by it. Sure, he blushed prettily when he saw her, and his face seemed to light up as he smiled, but that wasn’t so different from his usual reaction to seeing her.
There didn’t seem to be any tension or resentment coming from him at all. The only thing Marinette could spot that was any different was the way he held himself. It would be hard to identify if she didn’t know him so well, but he was a little more rigid than usual, a little more guarded.
He knew that she knew about his crush, then. And neither of them knew how to address it.
“H-hello, Adrien,” Marinette stuttered. Bracing herself, she stepped down onto the floor and moved to her usual seat at the table, noticing that someone had already prepared a cup of coffee and a slice of toast for her.
“Good morning, Marinette!” Adrien responded, seemingly happy to follow their normal routine despite the elephant in the room. “I got you some coffee and toast ready; I hope I remembered how you like it.”
Adrien watched as she took a sip of the still-hot coffee. It was exactly how she liked it, black with two scoops of sugar.
“It’s perfect,” she murmured. “Thank you.”
Adrien beamed. “Great! You’re welcome.”
They sat in a mostly-comfortable silence for a while, sipping their hot drinks and taking bites of their toast. Marinette wondered, as she stole glances at Adrien, whether she should pretend yesterday had never happened or do something about it. Apologize again, maybe, or suggest a nice friendly activity they could do together to move past the awkwardness more quickly.
Before she could speak, Adrien asked her a question.
“How are you feeling? There was an akuma last night, and the mansion got hit. How about you, were you affected by Sandboy’s powers?”
Marinette winced. So, Nathalie had likely been hit last night, then. But why had she still not responded to the voicemail?
“Yeah, Sandboy got me around midnight. Golden Bug came by and snapped me out of the nightmare as it faded, though. I’m okay,” she said in a small voice.
Adrien frowned and leaned towards her. “I’m glad Golden Bug was able to help you. But, no offense, those nightmares were not fun. You don’t have to talk about what yours was, exactly, but are you really okay? I can text you cat memes or those puns you claim to hate during free time if you need something to distract you today.”
A lump grew in Marinette’s throat. Why did he have to be so kind? It made her feel worse that she didn’t return his affections. If only he’d fallen in love with some other girl...
“Okay, I’m still a bit shaken up,” she admitted. “I know it was just a dream, but Sandboy’s nightmares were based on real fears, right? There was a lot of truth to my dream. I was going to have to face it anyway, but...” She shook her head and sighed. “I’m sorry, you were affected, too! Do you need something to cheer you up? An extra pastry, or something?” she added quickly before her brain could linger on the awful “kiss him” idea it had spat out for long.
“I can’t think of anything specific right now. Except for a surprise announcement that Hawk Moth and Bluewing gave up and gave u— Golden Bug and Chat Grise their Miraculous, instead,” Adrien joked.
Marinette thought that the grin she summoned in response probably looked a little fake or insane, but not by much. Hopefully.
“Wouldn’t that be something,” she quipped.
Adrien looked at her for a moment before sighing and looking down at his plate. “Yeah,” he said, almost wistfully. “It would be.”
After a moment, he looked up again.
“Hey, your dream last night wasn’t about Chloe, was it? I keep remembering how awful she was to you during the school tour you gave me, which I still feel guilty about, by the way. Do you need me to get some revenge for you? Make a cutout of her you can throw darts at, or something?”
Marinette’s lips twitched. “Thanks, but no, Adrien,” she said, feeling a giggle build in her stomach. “I still hate Chloe Bourgeois. But I’m not going to try to get revenge on her. That’d be petty, and besides, you and Alya have a handle on her now, right?”
Adrien smiled and shrugged shyly. “For the most part. She’s trying to be nicer, I think. I heard her discussing the idea of throwing a party for the class with Sabrina! With any luck, she’s going to become a better person.”
Taken off guard by the reminder of being better, Marinette flinched.
“I hope she does,” she muttered. Then she checked the time, trying not to show her relief when she saw how close it was to being time for her to leave.
She stood up from the table, collecting her bookbag as she did so. Adrien watched her get ready, and his jaw seemed to tighten a little.
“I have to go, or I’ll be late,” Marinette explained, feeling a bit guilty as she turned to Adrien. Normally, she had no problem with staying behind an extra minute or two to talk to him. Today, though, she just wanted to put some distance between her and the elephant in the room.
Adrien stood and followed her to the door. “Good luck today, Marinette,” he said, offering her one of those genuine smiles of his that probably had all the other girls drooling over him. “Don’t forget, text me if you need a distraction or just want to say hi. I’ll answer, no matter what! Oh, and wait,” he added, grabbing Marinette’s hand.
She turned to face him, feeling her nerves spike at his earnest expression. Was this it? Were they going to have to talk about it?
“I don’t know if she’ll be there when you arrive yet, but I think Nathalie might be sick today,” he said. “The Gorilla was the one making sure I was on time today. It was totally weird,” he laughed. “Let me know if you find out what happened?”
Marinette nodded in response to his question. “I will.”
Adrien let go of her hand, and she climbed into the car as the Gorilla held the door open for her, warding off one potential group of paparazzi with his other hand. They seemed to give up easily, but who knew if they’d gotten a picture of her and Adrien already. Marinette’s stomach clenched at the thought.
It’s just like with Bluewing, only hopefully nicer, she reminded herself. So don’t panic. Nathalie’s working on it; this’ll blow over soon.
Adrien waved her off as the car pulled away from the curb, and Marinette’s eyes lingered on his figure until she couldn’t see him anymore.
As the Gorilla dropped her off at the front door of the mansion, Marinette resolved not to let the day go by without asking M. Agreste why she hadn’t been part of the plan last night. Was it just that she was supposed to be on rest, or was it something else?
If she was feeling really confident, she might even ask M. Agreste whether she could start keeping the Miraculous with her.
But first, she should find Nathalie and talk to her. After all, it seemed that she’d been affected last night, too, and Marinette wanted to make sure she was okay. It had been an unsettling akuma; even Chat Grise had looked shaken up by it. What if she was late to work because her nightmare had been so bad?
She was kind of expecting it, but Nathalie wasn’t in the main hall to greet her.
Marinette frowned. Maybe Adrien was right, and she was out sick for the day?
Or maybe she’d show up soon, giving brusque instructions and holding her tablet like it was her only connection to order like she usually did.
Marinette decided to try calling for her.
“Hello?”
She waited for a moment to see if anyone had heard her.
There was no response.
She walked into the study room and found someone waiting for her there, sitting at the big table with Nathalie’s tablet in hand.
But this wasn’t Ms. Sancoeur. It was M. Agreste at the head of her private classroom.
Marinette moved cautiously to her chair, setting her bookbag down without looking away from M. Agreste. “Hello,” she greeted him, feeling a foreboding sense sink into her skin.
“Marinette,” he responded in a cool voice. “I am only here to deliver today’s lesson plans for you. I trust you to figure them out on your own.”
Marinette swallowed. “Where is Nathalie?” she asked.
“Nathalie no longer works for the Agrestes,” Gabriel said dismissively. “She had a conflict of interest and had to leave. Don’t worry, I will find a replacement for her soon. By the end of the day, if I can find someone suitably competent. But I warn you, this new secretary will not be privy to the same secrets you and Nathalie hold. Do not speak a work about our mission to them. Understood?”
“Understood,” Marinette repeated, feeling like she’d wandered into yet another dream. “Sir, if I may ask, what was the reason Nathalie gave for leaving? She seemed determined to stay, yesterday.”
“It’s not my business to ask why a staff member chooses to leave,” M. Agreste said simply.
He raised the tablet, turning it on, and swiped something on it. Marinette’s phone dinged with a notification, and when she checked it, she saw he’d sent her the files for her schoolwork. She’d have to print them herself, then,
Marinette opened them, feeling hollow. “She didn’t even give one single clue?”
She knew she was being childish, but Nathalie had always been there; she’d promised just yesterday to help Marinette; she wouldn’t leave unless she had a good reason!
Marinette needed to know what had happened.
“She had other priorities to focus on,” Gabriel said in a clipped voice. “That is all.”
“But will she still help us with... you know?” Marinette asked, feeling desperate. They couldn’t do this without Nathalie! They needed her.
“No,” Gabriel said. “From now on, it will only be you and me working on the mission.”
Marinette clutched the edges of her desk. “What about Adrien?” she asked.
At her words, M. Agreste looked surprised. “What about him?”
“Will you tell him? About you being Hawk Moth, and me being Bluewing? If Nathalie is gone, we could use someone else to help us.”
Gabriel frowned. “No need. You and I will do just fine on our own. Adrien would only get in the way, and besides, he’s too emotional. We can’t predict how he’d react. Trust me— we’re better off without him.”
Marinette frowned. Gabriel was wrong. He had to be wrong. About Nathalie, about Adrien...
Emilie’s words from the dream echoed in her mind. Don’t trust Gabriel...
She nodded brusquely. “Okay. But then it makes my next question even more important. Why didn’t you tell me about the akuma last night? Why not wait until I could help?”
Gabriel sighed. “This was not an opportunity I could just wait for, Marinette. Such a strong emotion as the one I felt last night is rare, and besides, attacking at night gave me an advantage over Golden Bug and Chat Grise. They were sluggish at first, though I admit they won again.”
“But I still could have helped,” Marinette insisted. “If I’d had my Miraculous, I could have been out there fighting, instead of cooped up in my room with a living nightmare. Did you know your akuma struck me?”
Gabriel’s lips thinned. “He struck many people. I had hoped he would affect Golden Bug’s civilian form, but perhaps it didn’t happen. Still, your Miraculous is broken; it’s dangerous to wear. You know that. Additionally, if you were to wear it in public, someone could steal it from you, or figure out that you are Bluewing. It is better to keep it here.”
Marinette frowned. They were good points, but...
“Next time, then, at least give me a warning. Or call me to the mansion; say it’s a fashion emergency. I risked my life for this, M. Agreste. The least you can do is let me help.”
Gabriel adjusted his glasses and frowned. “You are right. Forgive me, I am still not used to working with a partner with a Miraculous of their own. I will notify you of any akumas in the future.”
“Thank you,” Marinette said, trembling with relief.
“Think nothing of it. Oh, and Marinette. I know you’ve had a difficult time lately; I have, too. But don’t worry. You’ll be back to normal soon, and we will defeat that pesky Golden Bug and win peace. We are the real heroes, Marinette. Don’t forget it.”
“I won’t,” she assured him as he left the study room.
He is not what he says he is.

The Paris Special and Cataclysm
So the special happened right after Destruction ended, so right after Monarch deliberately made Chat Noir use Cataclysm on him so Ladybug could not longer have any leverage on him and escape with the Lucky Charm, dooming himself.
A bit later the same night Claw Noir, while fighting Chat Noir, Cataclysm himself and doesn't seem bothered after letting out a scream. Or the physical pain doesn't even reach the level of emotional pain he feels during that time, who knows.
So Chat Noir has his own father and an evil alternate version of himself who literally had him hurt themselves and he's horrified.
They are willing to hurt each other if it means they can win in the long run, showing their goals have past reached their own wellbeing. It just shows how unhealthy they are mentally and how it poisons their minds.
Cataclysm here seems to be the symbolism of their destructive grief and negative emotions, they let it consume and hurt themselves rather than trying to heal and move on. And grief can literally kill you, dying of a broken heart is a real thing, and I feel that in the special it showed us the 2 possible outcomes of it.
Negative emotions can lead you to spiral that can end with you also destroying yourself emotionally and physically, though I don't feel like I need to go into details, I feel the special kind of showed some ideas well enough.
In the first one outcome, which would be Gabriel since he got Cataclysmed first before Betterfly, Shadybug and Claw Noir showed up, Gabriel never let go of his grief and negative emotions, doesn't want to move on from Émilie and wants to bring her back no matter what, that's the outcome of letting grief and negative emotions consume you entirely.
The second outcome is Claw Noir not minding to get Cataclysmed himself and keeps using his power all the time, but in the end after a talk with Adrien, he choose to let it go and finally start to heal rather than stewing in his bitterness, sadness and loneliness and the all consuming, numbing pain of grief and all the dark emotions that comes with it. Of course he still has work ahead of himself, but he did the first most important step, and it was to accept that his mother was gone and would have prefered him to be happy rather than being miserable and mourning her loss for the rest of his life, and sure you can keep mourning your loved ones, but it doesn't mean that you can't learn to live with it and move on and be happy yourself, they still stay with you in your heart, and they would want you to live a long and happy life even if they're aren't around anymore.
I think this is why in the end (apart from the other reason of plot device since we still had the rest of season 5 to go through) Claw Noir got healed from his Cataclysm wound by Shadybug's Miraculous Cure, whereas Monach wasn't, because Claw Noir was ready to let go of his grief, Monarch wasn't, so Claw Noir got healed cause he wanted to stop hurting over his mother's disappearance after a talk with his alternate self who completely understood his feelings and situation and told him his own experience and offered advice that helped him be in a much better mental state that he was, but Monarch didn't want to give up on Émilie after getting most of the miraculouses after he feels so close after all this time so he wasn't healed because he couldn't let go, as he is obsessed over Émilie and his goal.
Which brings to their fate, Claw Noir lives, while Monarch at the end of season 5, dies, well choose to die and join Émilie and fix Nathalie rather than facing the consequences of his actions more would be it, getting what he wanted and also not entirely, given he was supposed to bring Émilie back and sacrifice someone else so that they could be a happy family again, but instead he chose to orphanate Adrien and be with Émilie and have Nathalie guard Adrien at the last second, he's still a horrible excuse of a parent and while I'm beyond pissed at this ending I'm also beyond done watching him do anymore crap for the following seasons.
So in the Paris Special there was the lowkey message of either you let your grief and negative emotions destroy you or you choose to accept them and start moving on to heal, and it was symbolised by Cataclysm.
It doesn't mean you aren't allowed to feel grief or negative emotions, you can't be happy 24/7 for your entire life, but letting them out in a healthy way instead of stewing in them without letting them go is what I feel the Special was about.
Thoughts?
Feel free to add your own piece of interpretation to it too.

I don’t think Adrien is super oblivious
Tumblr media
I wrote about Adrien not being oblivious of Marinette’s feelings before, but I think just as a whole, he’s not as oblivious as you may think. Let me break down why.
1. It’s never been some big revelation to him that Marinette is Ladybug - who he likes as more than a friend
Think of all the “what if” episodes: Chat Blanc, Oblivio, and Ephemeral.
Something that happens in all of these episodes is Adrien realizing Marinette is Ladybug and being so happy with them being the same person.
Tumblr media
But notice how it isn’t some huge revelation to him. Like, he figures it out and is pretty much like “that makes sense. No wonder I love you.” He was never like “wow! I would’ve never guessed! I don’t know if I like Marinette like that.”
Those episodes aside, in Heroes’ Day Pt. 2, he accepts Marinette’s kiss and compliments her, calling her “their everyday Ladybug.” And, in Multiplication, he remembers the advice she had given him about confronting his father, and wastes no time calling her and telling her how special she is to him. It’s not even like Adrien told Plagg to shut up or defend himself when he said Adrien would be a fake if he thinks he doesn’t like Marinette romantically.
Tumblr media
Adrien definitely seems well aware that he likes Marinette, but he’s in denial because he’s infatuated with Ladybug. Plus, he says the one time, “besides, there’s Luka.”
He doesn’t know how to juggle having feelings for two “different” girls (he’s never had a crush on anyone prior to), but it’s never been a big shock to him when he figures out they’re the same person and that he loves them both.
2. He won’t open up to his father
Gabriel is abusive…also the sky is blue.
It seems a lot of the time that Adrien isn’t aware of how abusive his father is, and lets him manipulate him. But, I think he’s got some idea of this, honestly. He’s caught onto more in comparison to season one.
The biggest sign was in Glaciator 2. When Gabriel says he’s been distant ever since Emilie’s passing but Adrien can talk to him if he needs to, he’s unfazed by the reason he’s distant, says, “if I needed to, father, I would…” and then walks away.
Tumblr media
Adrien didn’t even want to talk to him, despite him offering. That says a lot right there.
Throughout every season, Gabriel doesn’t even bother to do things like eat dinner with him, take him to the movies, help him practice piano, etc. and it thoroughly disappoints Adrien.
Adrien also admits in Risk that his father is forcing him to be this “perfect” model but all he wants is to be his son. He doesn’t want to be a model. He just wants a good relationship with his father, and it’s a really good thing he realizes that.
The sad thing is that there’s a 99.9% chance not going to improve, considering he just created an AI version of Adrien, which he’ll be able to use to his advantage. Adrien realized something was very fucked up about that after he saw this version of himself.
Tumblr media
3. He never claimed to love Kagami
Okay. So, Adrien definitely had a bit of an attraction to Kagami originally, I’m not saying he didn’t. However, he never openly says he loves her or even tries to woo her like does with Ladybug. Adrien very obviously shows his feelings through his actions and behavior - keep this in mind.
There’s probably Adrien salters who think he lead Kagami on, but the truth of the matter is that he really didn’t. He wanted to try to be with her, but he never admitted having feelings for her and he consistently showed discomfort while they were together.
Tumblr media
Kagami caught onto this and saw the charm from Marinette he’s always carrying. She tried to make the relationship work, but she noticed problems (aside from just him lying to go run off on patrols), and dumped him for that. And Adrien didn’t try to fight her on that, so I feel like he knew he didn’t feel the same way and that the breakup needed to happen.
4. He keeps flirting with Ladybug despite her saying she likes someone else
Okay, okay. I’ve seen this being debated about in the fandom a lot. There’s people who think he’s being too pushy, to a point of assault. But, I don’t really feel that’s the case. Lemme explain.
Ladybug will sometimes flirt with him back. She’s kissed him a number of different times. Similar to him, she’s also in denial of having feelings for him and trying to sort out these romantic feelings she has for Cat Noir.
Cat Noir/Adrien definitely notices this seeing as how much he loves her, which is why he still flirts with her here and there. He sees there might still be a chance for him. Especially seeing how she’s kissed him a number of times, twice that he can’t even remember, he’s going insane trying to figure out how that happened in the first place.
Tumblr media
I think he should cut back, which honestly he has since the first season. If Ladybug directly tells him to stop, he does. It’s just a matter of him thinking she might just feel the same, and the episodes rebooting him flirting and Ladybug having a different reaction every time. (She also doesn’t get super uncomfortable and incredibly mad the way she did when Felix tried to kiss her).
Conclusion
Adrien isn’t completely clueless and oblivious. That’s that.

Safety and Why Adrien’s “Sudden” Crush on Marinette Makes So Much Sense
Season 5 sees Marinette jumping headfirst into a crush on Chat Noir because her faith in a relationship with Adrien has been rocked considerably. She doesn’t trust the strength of their friendship. She doesn’t trust that she’ll make the right decisions around him. The foundation isn’t even there for her to trust his love for her. Their future is fraught with uncertainty.
Chat Noir is her loyal partner. Chat Noir is in love with her. She’s comfortable with Chat Noir. Chat Noir is the safe romantic choice.
While it’s also true that she has gained a newfound respect and loyalty to Chat Noir, she is also rebounding with him pretty hard. Especially after his unwavering support of her in ‘Strike Back’. He is her rock.
Adrien is doing the same thing. Ladybug neglected Chat Noir. He upset Ladybug to her breaking point with his excessive wooing. Every time he has any hope for he and Ladybug, it is abruptly snatched away by Ladybug herself or outside forces.
Tumblr media
Marinette is comforting and kind. Marinette is harmless. Marinette has never shown pushiness or aggression toward Adrien. Marinette feels safe- moreso than anyone else in his life besides Plagg- and his trust in her has been building since Season 1.
Tumblr media
In ‘Gamer’, Adrien takes an ego hit. He dazzles his classmates by winning against Max- you can see a little Chat Noir coming out in his body language there. Only to be beaten easily by Marinette during their practice session. He laments his insecurities to her and she comforts him by giving him her lucky charm bracelet. This becomes a symbol of their friendship and mutual support and clearly means a lot to Adrien. It’s a comfort. He keeps it on him wherever he goes.
Tumblr media
In ‘The Gorilla’, Adrien almost tells Marinette that he is uncomfortable modeling. I’ve seen people saying that his telling her in ‘Risk’ was “unearned”, but the truth is, he felt comfortable enough to open up to her 3 seasons prior.
Marinette takes Adrien to hide from his unhinged fan club in the fountain. She comments on how it’s awesome that he has such a popular ad and he says “I don’t know about that. It’s actually pretty… embarrassing”. He gets distracted by her pajamas and she becomes embarrassed at his wandering gaze. Then his fan club shows up and the chance to further elaborate never comes up, but he was super close to sharing his discomfort around modeling with her in that moment without the effects of Risk.
Tumblr media
In ‘Frozer’, Marinette is the first person Adrien asks for advice about Kagami after ultimately deciding against all of the “close” adults in his life. Nino may have been the most obvious choice- but considering Nino’s hopelessness in ‘Animan’, I can understand why he trusted Marinette. And he felt comfortable enough with Marinette as a safe zone to ask her to come along.
Tumblr media
In ‘Malediktator’, while the rest of the class is celebrating Chloe’s curt exit, Adrien is extremely put off. When Marinette explained what happened, he felt comfortable enough with her to disagree and to call her out on the “She was useless anyway” comment. I’m not sure what Adrien expected from Marinette after this. He’s used to people either punishing him for disagreeing or just ignoring him/standing their ground. But Marinette feels guilty and takes steps to remedy what happened and bring Chloe back- something he clearly appreciated in the end.
Tumblr media
In the ultra controversial ‘Chameleon’, Adrien advised Marinette not to take an aggressive route with Lila and she listens, ceasing to try to expose her (*in an earlier edit, I said it didn’t stick, but I realized her exposure attempts in Catalyst came before Chameleon. Marinette did actually stick to her word.) Compare this to his conversation with Lila in the same episode in which he asks her not to lie to him and warns her about the class turning against her. He’s nice about it and offers his support, but Lila jumps on the defensive and accuses him of ‘playing superhero’. Similarly, when he gives Chloe advice, she won’t even change her ways for more than a day- even under threat of losing her friendship with him.
Lastly, Adrien allows himself to “slip” with Marinette. He trusts that she won’t admonish him for his jokes or “being silly” Marinette is quite silly herself (that’s why they made such a goofy couple in ‘Elation’). She only takes offense to his prank in Puppeteer 2 because she humiliated herself. She even apologizes profusely for the misunderstanding later.
Tumblr media
‘Risk’ made clear to Adrien what MLB has been building to for seasons: Marinette feels like a safe and comfortable space for Adrien. His father is cold and controlling. Nathalie is cold and in league with his father. His bodyguard is emotionally distant and silent.  Chloe is pushy and doesn’t listen to him. Felix antagonizes him.  Lila is dishonest and manipulative with him. Ladybug has been a neglectful partner who he secretly reasons only wants him around as far as his miraculous can assist her. Kagami led their entire relationship and he felt uncomfortable challenging her. Nino was fine until Rocketear where he denounced Adrien’s entire alter ego as a useless playboy.
Even the fact that Marinette has never managed to confess properly, is a safety to Adrien. She’s never put any pressure on him. She’s always just been that cute, silly girl who is compassionate with him and stands up for what she believes in. Never controlling. Not at all intimidating. Down to listen. She’s (the everyday) Ladybug without the strife. Marinette is “safe”.

Hello, I want to ask what are the science kids & the Austins worst experiences with Marinette or Ladybug were? Like it could be mixed of both, I’m just wondering.
Okay! *cracks knuckles* Let’s fucking do this!
Simon:
Asked by her many many many times to help her get some video footage of Adrien. He would’ve said yes, but Marinette asked for him to do it in secret
Uh… Illegal? And when they said no, she snapped and sent him dozens of photos she took of Adrien in secret before storming off… He’s an accomplice now.
Reshma:
Alienated simply because she was rich and Marinette saw a photo of her in a magazine with Chloé for some charity gala, and immediately assumed the worst
Marinette spread a rumor back when they were twelve that she and Chloé are friends, making it hard for Reshma to make any friends for herself
Denise:
Reprimanded by Ladybug in front of dozens of people for “vigilantism” when really, they just punched an Akuma before it could attack Simon
When they commissioned a dress, Marinette explained that she didn’t quite have enough fabric for Denise’s build, even when Denise made serval offers to pay double. She didn’t wanna “waste” fabric. (I’ll give some of ya’ll a moment to think about what that means)
Jean:
Pressured into giving up the lead role in a play to Adrien so Marinette could kiss him
He got Akumatized because of that, and received a harsh lecture for Ladybug over forgiveness or some shit, and Marinette never apologized to him
Ismael:
Marinette: “No offense, and not to be rude, but your current look is kinda butch. I get your wanna- I mean, your are a guy, but you could stand to look a little more presentable. And remember, there’s no shame in having a feminine touch to your clothes.”
She’s one of those aggressively accepting people who goes on about how “Ismael, you should be a model! You look so good! I can make you tons of binders, and I’ll donate the money to transgender charities!”
Marc:
He wore ONE magenta skirt to school and now Marinette keeps trying to get him to wear more traditionally feminine clothing and be her model for an “inclusive line”. And when he was Rooster Bold, Ladybug kept trying to get him to transform into an outfit more like Pigella’s
Marinette keeps giving him terrible advice for dating Nathaniel, even going so far as to suggest he should stalk him
Cosette:
Promised dozens of times to help them study for a big test, but NEVER kept them. Cosette managed to get a good grade on their own, but there Marinette is taking the credit for “helping them study” and soaking up the praise
And Cosette is just like: Uh, bitch? You didn’t do jackshit.
Lacey:
While doing parkour around Paris, she was interrupted by a sudden Akuma attack. As she was sprinting back home, Ladybug swooped in out of nowhere and knocked them off the side of a building. Lacey was horribly injured and Ladybug didn’t do shit to help her back up, Chat Noir did
And when the Cure took effect, instead of asking if she was alright, Ladybug had the gall to reprimand her and Chat in front dozens od people for their “recklessness”, and Lacey was forced to take some shitty seminar of safety and shit even though she’s gone through all the regulations of what she can and can’t do
Zoé:
Unwillingly dragged into the cringe Adrinette plans despite her constantly saying no, only to be met with some clear gaslighting from Marinette
When she told Marinette about how she was bullied at school, this girl made it all about herself and talked about how she was constantly bullied by Chloé until Zoé faked being sick and left… Then Marinette texted her the rest of her story when she got home
Aurore:
Aurore has a habit of correcting people, not to be rude, just so they don’t make the mistake again. When Ladybug was having a hard time figuring out what to do with her Lucky Charm, and her method would have put lives in danger, Aurore rushed in and used the Lucky Charm in a way that wouldn’t have risked the lives of probably dozens
And although Aurore received praise from the citizens for her quick thinking, Ladybug was pissed, scolded Aurore for behaving so recklessly without a Miraculous, and told everyone to never follow her example. This public scene got Aurore suspended from being the weather girl for a while until some protesters backed her up
Mireille:
When Marinette heard she was going to a party with Adrien thanks to her dad’s connections, she kept trying to “coerce” Mireille into making her her plus-one. But Mireille said no dozens of time and in a fit of jealousy, Marinette moved the “wet floor” sign and Mireille tripped and fell on the floor, allowing Marinette to steal her ticket
While on bed rest, Mireille turned the tv on and saw Marinette in a pink evening dress holding Adrien’s hand and going on about how Mireille was so nice to give up her ticket to her since she couldn’t go
Austin A:
As revenge for a bad review on her website, Marinette stole his makeup bag and swapped out his face cream for something Austin’s allergic to. So, when Austin used it, his skin broke out in hives and he had to go to the hospital
When he returned to school, he heard Marinette going on to her friends about how he deserved what happened. The worst part of this is that the bad review was warranted. The scarf he commissioned unraveled easily
Austin B:
He decided to try out for the Mecha Strike tournament because Max was out sick and wouldn’t be able to compete. He won, and gets to play alongside Adrien. But, then! Marinette swoops in and steals his position
Then she rubs it in his face in private, telling him the school doesn’t need “another Chloé” representing them
Austin Q:
Saw him walking his brother home while he was in his headspace, made a show that she was concerned about him of all people being the one to care for Félice, causing Félice to have a panic attack that she accused Austin of causing
Saw him buying a shark plushie at a toy store and took a picture, which she sent to everyone, and Austin was too mortified to leave his own home
Austin T
During a school bake sale, more customers were going to his booth instead of hers, she got jealous and made backhanded compliments about how “his pastries are so good that Austins clearly enjoys them himself” (Give y’all a moment to think about what she meant)
When Ladybug came fo the school as a guest speaker to speak about abuse, she used Austin and Jean as an example when talking about dating violence, implying that Austin is an emotional abuser and questioning why Jean wears so many long-sleeve shirts
*Later*
Aurore: So, we’re in agreement. Marinette needs to be stopped, expelled, and then arrested.
Austin T: And Ladybug needs to turn in her Miraculous to someone who’s not a total b-word.
Denise: For sure. That girl just expects me to sit by and let my friends get hurt so she can do her stupid Cure in the very end? Nope! I’m getting real sick of that bitch!
Austin A: So… What’s the plan?
Everyone: …
Simon: Honestly, I don’t have one. Okay, both of them have too much influence, they know celebrities, and a bunch of fans to back them up… Huh. Saying it out loud, Marinette and Ladybug are kinda similar.
Jean: … Oh, hell no.
Cosette: Nope. No, you stop thinking that, Jean.
Jean: Too late.
Austin B: Well, if you look at the facts, it makes sense. Plus, it’s not a coincidence we’ve been screwed over by those two in the worst possible ways.
Aurore: True. But, Marinette will just pull the “poor me” card and say her actions were from the stress of being Ladybug.
Marc: … Fuck it. Fuck any photo consent laws. We follow Marinette during an Akuma attack, take a video of her transforming and post it on an untraceable anonymous account. She’s forced to give up her Miraculous to someone WAY more competent, and that takes care of one problem. While she’s getting the martyr treatment, we expose Marinette for the person she truly is in and out of the mask. She loses everything, and we win.
Everyone: …
Ismael: Marc… I am so proud of you! You devious little Angel! Let’s do this! Are you people ready?!
Reshma: So ready.
Austin Q: I was born to do this!
Cosette: LET’S BURN THAT BITCH TO THE GROUND!
Oops. I dropped these. Enjoy!

Adrien asks to see Plagg’s true form My entry for Adrien AUGreste 2023: Plagg
Ao3 link, Series
“Hey, Plagg,” Adrien called, looking at a video on his computer. “This ghost thing kinda looks like you.”
Plagg peered over Adrien’s shoulder as he relished the taste of a particularly delicious wheel of camembert. Huh, that was a cat spirit, a decently strong one too, from the looks of it. It wasn’t quite as well formed as him. Its tiny black body was mostly a head with tiny little bat wings, and its eyes were purple instead of his ravishing green, but he could see the resemblance.
Then, having fed off enough fear from the civilians nearby, it transformed. Its wings grew to massive lengths and grew to four. Its face morphed from a simple fear to a pig nosed muzzle, and its main body became long and sleek like a panther’s.
“Oh,” Adrien said, frowning. “It doesn’t anymore.”
“Puh-lease,” Plagg remarked, lifting his nose up away from that pathetic transformation, “my true form is much cooler than that.
Immediately, Adrien sat up straight, looking at Plagg in undisguised awe. “You have a true form?” Adrien asked.
“Of course I do,” Plagg said, grinning smugly as he revealed in the attention his chosen was giving him. He nonchalantly swallowed a roll of camembert whole as he smugly asked, “What, did you think those ghosts could be cooler than me? Trust me,” Plagg swept his paw through the air in a dismissive gesture, “compared to me, those ghosts are just the very beginnings of curdled milk. It would take them millenia to even be a fraction as smart or as powerful as I am.”
“Wait,” Adrien cocked his head, looking at Plagg in an adorable level of confusion, “why don’t you ever use it then?”
“Because it’s huge,” Plagg said, rolling his eyes. “And if you think my powers are tricky in this size, it’s nothing compared to my true self. Honestly, I could probably destroy the entire Milky Way on accident like that.”
“Oh,” Adrien said softly. “I guess that makes sense.”
Plagg hummed, eyeing Adrien carefully. It didn’t take a genius to see Adrien’s disappointment. His wielder wasn’t subtle about his emotions. How anyone could miss them was beyond Plagg, but showing someone his true form was a big deal. Most people only ever wanted to see it before they demanded that he fuse with Tikki to make reality bend to whatever stupid wish they wanted. Adrien though…
Plagg genuinely believed that Adrien might just want to see it. He was curious like that, always grabbing and reaching for whatever scraps of knowledge Plagg handed out to him, and his wielder was clever too.
At first, Plagg had given Adrien the tiniest scraps of information to tease him, offering only a small taste of information to see his tiny little human mind get blown, but after a month or so, Adrien would surprise him by casually mentioning things to Plagg that he’d never even said out loud before, had never even needed to.
For instance, after a few weeks of listening to Adrien drone on and on about his sickeningly sweet crush on Ladybug, Plagg had once again given his excellent cheese advice only for Adrien to counter that Plagg had never been in love. Or after Plagg had introduced the idea that he’d had many wielders before, it had only taken Adrien about 3 weeks to complain about how he couldn’t transform into a cat like Bast had.
From then on, it had become a game of sorts. Plagg would drop some little seed of information every so often, and Adrien would counter it by bringing up some surprisingly insightful tangential guesses about it with the surety of someone who’d known it for years. Sometimes he was wrong, hilariously wrong, like the time he’d thought Loki was a fox, but most of the time, his wielder was right on the money.
Plagg had let a lot of secrets go this way. He knew he’d dropped far too many hints for his own good, but it was so satisfying to watch his little human grow and figure out things so quickly and easily. In fact, for the first time in a long time, Plagg felt like he trusted his wielder. So maybe, he could try something.
“Do you want to see it?” Plagg asked cautiously. Immediately, Adrien lit up like a Christmas tree, but he hesitated.
Biting his lip, Adrien hesitantly asked, “But didn’t you say it was dangerous?”
Plagg gave him an easy grin and waved his paw dismissively. “Don’t worry about it,” he said. “We’ll just have to find someplace big enough to hold me without anyone seeing us, and I’ll just need to avoid using my powers. No big deal.” Then he paused before quickly adding, “But, just in case, I can’t stay in that form for too long.” As Adrien nodded, he quickly added, “and it’s just the one time.”
Adrien hummed, before he grinned. “I think I know a place. Plagg! Claws Out!” ~*~ As it turned out, Adrien’s place was one of the cisterns in the sewer. It was hardly conspicuous. Both Ladybug and Chat Noir had hidden near a number of these several times, but Plagg was a little worried he wouldn’t be able to fit.
Apparently, Adrien had the same idea, because he looked at it nervously as he asked, “Is it big enough?”
As Plagg listened to Adrien’s voice, he cursed his soft heart. As soon as he heard that tone in Adrien’s voice, Plagg knew, as clearly as he knew that pasteurized cheese was a crime against humanity, that if it wasn’t big enough, his wielder would blame himself. He was weirdly self-conscious like that: eager to blame himself at the slightest opportunity. Plagg blamed his stupid father for that, and Ladybug’s stupid obsession with secrets hadn’t been helping.
“Yeah, it’s big enough,” Plagg said, quickly to assuage Adrien’s doubt. For Adrien, Plagg would find a way for it to be big enough.
Quickly, he coached Adrien through the spell. “In order to do this,” Plagg told him, “you’re going to have to say, ‘Plagg, reveal yourself’. It’ll be a bit like transforming, but the magic’s not going towards you, it’s going away, so you’re going to have to be forceful, but not too forceful or we’ll bring this place down.”
Adrien nodded before following Plagg’s instructions to a tee. Feeling the bindings on his smaller form loosen, Plagg stretched his form out very carefully, making sure not to touch the ceiling or the water. He’d only be a fraction of his normal size like this, but he figured that Adrien would still be able to see all of his features.
As soon as he was finished, Plagg looked back at Adrien with all three of his eyes to find Adrien with eyes the size of dinner plates and beaming like the cat who caught the canary.
“You look so cool,” Adrien gushed. “And look at those wings! They look just like Astrocat’s. And that eye! Can I have an eye like that? Can you see out of it? What does it look like? Does it look like it does with only two eyes or can you see in other dimensions?”
Smiling, Plagg stretched and flexed, a strange feeling coming from his chest as Adrien oohed and awed at every new thing he noticed about Plagg, asking dozens and dozens of questions in barely contained glee. Adrien delighted in everything:  from the realization that his body was covered in eyes, “can you see from all of them?” to Plagg’s disembodied joints “how far can they move?” to the giant hole in his chest, “can I touch it?”
Plagg had to admit, he let time slip away from them as Adrien admired Plagg. At first from the ground, but after Adrien asked to be picked up, from up close. There was something so simple, so joyful in being marveled at instead of being used as just half of a battery.
Together, he and Adrien spent a few hours down there until Adrien had started getting tired and -very reluctantly- suggested they go back. The next morning though, they paid for it. Adrien had come down with a cold, one of the nastiest that Nathalie had ever seen apparently, and Plagg had felt terrible.
As soon as Plagg apologized though, in his own way, Adrien shook his head.
“It was worth it,” Adrien insisted through a faceful of snot and mucus, and Plagg nuzzled him happily. He knew he must’ve been the luckiest kwami in the world.
