“It is because I love you that I won’t.”

I love these dialogues from Addies and Luc in the invisible life of addie larue. It totally represents two different perspectives on love.

Addie, like many people, thinks that love is purely selfless and good. (While she herself can have selfish actions or thoughts) Luc thinks that love is selfish, or at least can be. (Because to say that Luc is purely selfish would be quite hypocritical given all the events of the books and what he does there. Luc is much more complicated than that)

But I like that these two sentences summarize these two visions of love.

Love is selfless. Love is selfish. When in fact... it can be both, separately or together. Love can be something uniquely good and positive. Just as it can be negative. And sometimes it's both together. They are simply different forms of the same feeling.

All this to say that I hate when people try to say that love must be pure, good and selfless. It's bullshit. Whether in fiction or reality. The difference is that in fiction you can explore relationships with toxic connotations without risk, unlike real life or if there are red flags, you obviously have to just run to protect yourself.

Justice for romances like Luc & Addie, Jane Eyre & Rochester, Heathcliff & Catherine (Wuthering Heights), Coriolanus Snow & Lucy Gray Bird (The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes), Christine & Erik (The Phantom of the Opera), Thomas & Edith (Crimson Peak), Hannibal & Will (Hannibal), Hannibal & Clarice (Hannibal), Raistlin & Crysania (Dragonlance), Sarah & Jareth (Labyrinth), Qu Xiao Feng & Li Cheng Yi (Goodbye My Princess), The Darkling & Alina (Grisha), Mare & Maven (Red Queen), Julian & Jenny (The Forbidden Game), and so so many others...

Not without kidding, there are so many examples in general, but also that I know and love that it is impossible to cite them all !

GUYS I magically have to get an (acting) agent or take control over V.E.Schwab’s mind or sell my soul to Luc because in my daydreams I’ve casted myself as Addie LaRue in the movie adaptation and If I’m not playing her I’m literally going to rip my hair out of jealousy!!

so here’s why I should play her:

but before that… this is a photo of me and Addie LaRue fanart to prove to you I was born for this and to show you that I’m taking this cry for help very seriously and it’s not a satire (credits to the amazing artist avendellart on IG)

1. literally pls! i’m studying sociology and what can you do with a sociology degree? nothing so it’s either acting or misery

2. I do actually have 7 freckles, I’m bisexual and 21 yo virgin (or maybe the freckles are just acne scars??)

3. you may ask me if I can act.. well I am a big liar and lying and acting is basically the same thing also I’ve done some work as an extra (that’s not a lie I have a proof)

4. it’s gonna be an epic story “small town slavic girl has been casted in a movie adaptation of a bestselling book”… sounds good no? no? okay then

5. also yeah acting is my dream since forever so it’s not a big deal if I don’t make it hahahahaha-pls gimme chance- hahahaha

6. do you remember the scene where she had to dress up as guys to protect herself?? anyway I had to always play the guy roles in my dance school because I’m 6’ lol so it would be easy

7. speaking of me being 6’ … yeah nothing to really add to it I just wanna play the “empower tall women” card

8. even tho I’m not french, i took 4 years of french classes in high school and even tho I can barely introduce myself the accent is magnificent you wouldn’t even know (i’m from the czech republic btw)

9. i have been very emotional lately so crying on cue will not be a problem (hopefully)

10. it would be kinda funny If I actually make it and then found out I can’t act to save my life??

soooo if anyone from the movie crew is down I’m down too, just my side profile may be a problem but that’s okay

I’m sorry but the people who read Addie Larue and walked away saying she had no depth or no motivation or wtf ever lack basic reading comprehension skills. The book literally mentions multiple times that she is operating on pure spite. There are multiple times she wants to give in but doesn’t because there is more beauty to be seen and more ways to make Luc mad about the fact that she won’t give in. “She never does anything important.” Girl is literally fighting the ocean alone. No one can remember her, but she still wakes up and gives her heart to people who see her as a stranger. Over 300 years and she doesn’t stop trying to experience love and happiness. God, you must be so miserable and end result motivated to not see how good this character is.

One thing I particularly like about The Invisible Life of Addie Larue is that Luc is right ; Addie shaped him.

She gave it a shape and a name.

I'm convinced that Luc didn't have a name before Addie gave him Luc's, or perhaps a very old name unpronounceable to humans, who knows. Or simply a title to designate the creature he is. But personally, I don't think he had any. After all, his first response to Addie's question was why he should have a name, not the one that he shouldn't tell her. Especially since if names do indeed have power in this universe as Addie and Luc say, it should be noted that yes, in the rest of the story Addie has power over Luc. Just letting her name it gave her power. It is precisely after this point in the book that the relationship really evolves. I don't think it's a coincidence. Names have power, and Addie begins to have a real influence on Luc after giving him one. (Therefore reinforcing my interpretation that he actually didn't have a name before Addie)

Also, she gave her a shape.

He have been used to taking on an appearance based on the people he met, and or simply speaking while remaining among the shadows, but strangely after taking on an appearance for Addie, he sometimes kept it beyond of her. This can be seen the first time he meets Henry. He presumably maintains the appearance Addie gave him outside of when he sees her. Which for a being such as Luc, is not nothing. Without forgetting the quote according to which Luc is deprived of stars at night, and that Addie, through her freckles, is rightly associated with the stars. Addie therefore helps complete Luc.

Do you think Luc and Addie will end up happy one day ? What did you think of the book overall, as well as the ending ?

I'm not sure happy is an emotion either of them is capable of.

Perhaps content in a way, since they've evolved not into what they want, but what they need to be.

The book was beautiful in melancholic way, the ending best for everyone involved, since Henry- the only truly human among them- got his second chance at ordinary life. Addie kept her freedom and embraced her otherness and Luc got his desired companion, whether his feelings for her were merely admiration and captivation, or love.
