So I'm gonna write an essay, buckle up (I always write an essay on this stuff, I can't help it, I signed a contract at birth that said I would)

Firstly, ruts are sort of a 'new invention' in the omegaverse landscape. And by new I mean I'm really old and some people don't remember omegaverse without it. But I sure do! Only omegas went into heat, because heat indicated hyperfertility, and alphas were already hyperfertile without a rut. That was the whole point. You know, that's why they make such a perfect match. Hyperfertile mate meet hyperfertile mate.

They didn't need a rut.

Ruts came along later, and honestly in most of the fiction I've read that have them, ruts are very rarely written, and are often more like a threat hanging in the background. A sort of 'lol make sure you have food and water because like people go to hospital if they're in rut / heat at the same time.' Literal just about fuck-or-die situation. Or fuck-and-die. Probably more like fuck-and-who-cares-about-anything-else.

Anyone who has ever fucked a lot in a marathon session knows that eventually you just need carbs. *coughs*

Ruts are conceptually a TON of fun to think about. It's like authors went 'you know what hyperfertile alphas need? Something like a heat, that also makes them completely out of control.'

The thing is... alphas could already go completely out of control around an omega for a lot of reasons. It happened in fated mates stories. It happened in 'an omega is in heat and I just can't help it' (oh bless all those noncon omegaverse stories we have which are literally 'you just smelled so good you had to be mine'). A lot of the things ruts are supposed to achieve, already can easily be achieved in omegaverse.

Conceptually, ruts can be interesting as 'the alpha is also super vulnerable and helpless and needy during this time' but it's almost never written that way and it's not how I like to think about it. And in terms of worldbuilding, the places where it's made the most sense has almost always been as a dystopian thing that's almost dreaded by both the alphas and omegas (and everyone else) alike, and is just as much likely to be controlled by suppressants as heats, because no one likes to turn into an Automatic robot rapist. (Even though that's basically what many alphas become if they smell an omega in heat, I'm not saying ruts are the Department of Redundancy Deparment or anything, but they're a little bit like City of Redundancy in the shire of Redundancy population Already Covered In General Omegaverse tropes in the country of But It's Fun Anyway continent of Redundant.)

I love reading stories with rut worldbuilding but I have to suspend my disbelief so hard. And I know, I know, you kind of have to do that with omegaverse anyway, but there just comes a point where it's like 'but...the heat...triggers a response in alphas...thats mean a rut...is not needed...because that's what the heat does.' In some ways it takes some power and strength away from the symbolism of the omega's heat (romantically it's very interesting as the trope that renders the often hypermasculine character as so helpless to the omega that they basically have to have sex with them (guess what a rut is? Same same not different! Okay it can be different. It's often not though.))

As a result, I personally like worldbuilding that differentiates a general alpha response to an omega's heat, to a rut. And therefore if a rut is the more extreme version of a general 'must fuck' alpha response, it's likely to go pretty not...great. Much like unfulfilled heats are often characterised as agonising, I like to think of ruts are potentially very fatal. (Warning! Warning! The hypermasculinity levels are critical, boss! He's gonna blow! This time his heart! Not his cock!)

The worldbuilding mentioned in the chapter you're referring to - in the Underline the Rainbow universe - states that ruts are vestigial. It's killed too many alphas who have experienced it.

It basically knocked itself out of the genetic line, in the same way that peak alphas are going the same way because people just don't do great living like that in a functional society.

Also consider the...setting of the story if you will. This is a place where we're rehabilitating omegas and helping them recover from extreme trauma. The professional response to 'I go into rut all the time' alpha companion candidates is 'see a health professional, you can never ever ever ever ever be a companion here, because we...care about our omegas, and don't think your rut takes precedent over their health during a heat. Go away.'

None of these alphas go into rut! None of them should! It would be terrible from a story perspective (I mean, for me. I'm writing trauma recovery).

The only alpha on the grounds who potentially could go into rut is Caleb, I think he has the disposition for it. And I think it would be speedily suppressed with heavy doses of medication for the safety of any omega near him.

The thing that really frustrates me from a worldbuilding perspective is that in some ways, heats make sense. It's a fertile period for an animal that cannot afford the physiological cost of being that fertile all the time. That's it. In humans who already have menstrual cycles (which create fertility windows so the woman or person with the uterus doesn't have to be consistently fertile the same amount all the time), this makes actual biological sense.

Ruts in omegaverse don't even mean what they mean in nature, it's so frustrating. In nature, ruts are sort of connected to mates, but not about fucking them endlessly most of the time. It's about competing with rivals. Going into rut is marking your territory, attacking fellow stags (sometimes to the death), and keeping hold of your herd or flock. This makes...much less biological sense. It's not how it's written in fiction most of the time, and it's really just 'what if heat but alpha.' I'd love if ruts were 'HHH I have to FIGHT every ALPHA I SEE to the DEATH or at least MEASURE MY HEIGHT against HIS or SHOUT to see whose VOICE is LOUDER we are DICK MEASURING NOW my dick is BIGGER I am going to FUCK AN OMEGA IN TRIUMPH. YOU! THERE! COME HERE! No wait where are you going? Stop running!' That's... that's the world I want to live in sdalkfjsaflksaj

I have no problems with that, most omegaverse is just pure mindless pornography for fun, or very thin worldbuilding for fun, and orgasms are had by many and it achieves it's purpose.

But I can't justify something like that making sense in the Underline the Rainbow as a thing these characters experience. I like it as a 'oh this used to happen but we couldn't just go around killing each other and also we died so...' I'm pretty sure it's taught about in schools, lol. In the same way that alphas dueling each other to the death is now pretty much illegal in most places, some things you either just culturally change for the betterment of society (which is...literally the purpose of Hillview), and some things you X out of your own genetic lineages because the thing itself kills you.

Since ruts are in most serious omegaverses presented as extreme events, and alphas are already hyperfertile (in worlds where betas exist), they're just redundant.

Fun in PWPs, and fun for angst, but not the kind of angst I'm personally going for.

Any thoughts abt a virginia woolf reading order? Ive never read any of her stuff but ive been wanting to ever since my professor for fiction writing told me my stuff reminded her of woolf

Sure! In terms of her essays, I don’t think reading order really matters, but if you haven’t read Modern Fiction yet, it’s a must. The rest I leave up to you; I’ve read a bunch, and even when I don’t agree with her I think they provide context to who she is as a person, but none were (personally!) particularly life changing.

As for fiction! I think chronologically works well. Her first book was The Voyage Out, and I really recommend starting there (If you want something even earlier, her first ever published work was a short story called the mark on the wall that’s a lot of fun). You see the seeds of what will later develop into her signature style, and in all honesty I also just really like the book! The Dalloways (yes, those dalloways) are in it as well so it provides an extra layer to reading Dalloway later. The ending destroys me to this day 🫡

After voyage, I’d recommend you read Jacob’s Room, which is considered her first work of high modernism. After that, Mrs. Dalloway and To The Lighthouse, which are her most famous novels and many people’s favorites. And they’re great! They’re fantastic! Love and adore them!

If you want to, then would be the time to read Orlando and Flush, which are her experiments with the pseudo biography genre. Full disclosure, I actually am not a fan of Orlando—it’s considered a landmark of feminist literature, but I simply don’t enjoy Woolf when she’s primarily focused on being irreverent and satirical, and there’s just a lot of blatant racism in Orlando (one can argue how much is commentary vs Woolf’s own bias or the effectiveness of that commentary) that detracts from the experience of reading it. Idk, just really not my thing, lacks the heart found in a lot of her other work. I haven’t read flush, so no commentary there!

Her last two books are The Waves (my favorite, the one I just spent my entire semester immersed in an writing about) and Between The Acts, which both draw heavily from the stageplay format, are by far her most experimental works, and Between the Acts (which I just started) in particular really reads more like a piece of postmodern literature. Oh! You don’t have to, but her mémoires Moments of Being are great to read before The Waves because she pulls sooo many of those experiences into the novel.

Her diaries and letters are also definitely worth a read, and this isn’t even close to everything she wrote (so many essays and so many reviews). Woolf is an interesting author in that her eras of writing are so distinct, so a chronological reading progression just makes sense imo. I know I threw a lot at you, but truly, take your time and just become immersed in Woolf.

sorry the gaylor stuff is fascinating to me so i wrote a whole damn essay abt it under the cut

something i find personally really interesting about gaylor stuff is like - i see the sentiment expressed often in gaylor circles that taylor swift's queerness needs to exist to justify her art. like, if taylor swift isn't queer, why does she write so much about hidden romances? about feeling like she needs to protect her lover from the public? how come she writes about these big dramatic whirlwind affairs when in real life she just dates boring white guys?

there's a few answers:

writing about normal dating stuff isn't as fun as writing about big dramatic whirlwind affairs. yes, love can be stored in going to the grocery store together and cuddling and movie nights - but it's hard to get multiple albums worth of material out of the bliss of domestic mundanity

she is a woman in the public eye. her dating life has been heavily scrutinized by a million strangers since she was sixteen. publicly being seen with someone is in fact a big thing for her, even though she is a cishet white woman who historically has only dated cishet white guys

as much as she hypes up her work as autobiographical - she is capable of writing fiction and has done so before. to assume that every song is ripped straight from her diary seems like it's discrediting her own creativity (and, see point one)

and i think its fair to say that these themes she returns to of forbidden love and having to hide your feelings can absolutely resonate with queer audiences. yeah, i do think a lot of her songs probably hit harder if you imagine they're about a queer person. but relatability and identity are not the same thing, and i think it's important to both not assume that everyone with x identity has experienced y, but also to not assume that experiencing y means someone must have x identity.

however, there's another layer to this. if i were to tell a straight girl about my personal experiences with homophobia, and she responded by saying "i absolutely understand - my dad wouldn't let me date anyone until i was eighteen, i had to sneak boys in and out of the house" - i would understand this as well intentioned, but i might feel slighted or misunderstood by the fact that she considered society-wide discrimination equivalent to having to worry about getting in a fight with her dad. similarly, i've seen many gaylors express that taylor being an ally would make her absolutely unpalatable to them - if she's straight, that means she centered herself every time she talked about lgbt activism despite being heterosexual, that means all the lyrics about hidden relationships are actually about her public boring white boyfriends, that means she didn't ramp up her gay activism because she was planning on coming out and she just did it to promote her new album, that means there really aren't any more secrets to decode and she might actually be dating a football player. for a lot of gaylors, the gay subtext is in fact the entire reason they like taylor swift, and if she's a heterosexual woman, that means they have to find a new favorite artist

in case it's unclear: this is an outsiders perspective. i find gaylor stuff interesting in the same way i find paul is dead stuff interesting - the concept of this long running conspiracy theory surrounding celebrities is really fun for me. paul mccartney is alive, though, and taylor swift is, at least to my knowledge, heterosexual. i'm actually not really a taylor swift fan - i won't change the station if she comes on the radio, but i'm only familiar with her hits and also steadfastly believe that her being gay wouldn't outweigh the damage her jet has done to the environment. i don't have any investment in taylor's sexuality at all - if she's been secretly dating whatever woman she was most recently photographed with, ok cool. if she's actually for reals dating the football guy - cool. but i think a lot of gaylor stuff leans on starting from the assumption that she's queer and works back from that, which makes for poor theorycrafting. additionally, i think it's fuckin goofy to pretend the biggest pop star in the world would face career-ruining backlash for being gay, especially when she's made her stance on gay rights known. i can't imagine someone going "i thought the gay rights song was good and tasteful but knowing she herself is queer has ruined her for me". if she could come back from the kanye scandal, the jet thing, the dating a right-wing asshole thing - she will literally be fine, and to pretend otherwise is to ignore the plethora of other queer pop stars who are far less famous than her and still maintained their careers.

however, i do find that theory that she and harry styles committed vehicular manslaughter and had it covered up pretty funny. i will incorporate that one into my belief system.

see the thing about this question i LOVE is that you can answer it two ways: "what the characters would say their fursona is" and "what God and everyone else knows their fursona is". "jerma you'd be a rat" vs "lion wolf hybrid king of the junjle". you get me?

we'll start with what they'd make up as fursonas- i think phobos would try to be as realistic as possible n choose a deathstalker scorpion, nd make VERY clear to specify that he has remarkably small claws (so you know how potent his venom is!!!) [scorpion venom is relative to the claw size- smaller claws = more potent venom, as they have less need to hold down their prey!]. tbf he'd probably literally just base it off one of his owned scorpions- no fancy bits n baubles attached, although he would also design UV markings [scorpions, along with many other animals glow under UV light!] for himself so the design isn't necessarily bland or lacking.

crackpot would be the complete opposite, however- he'd be too indecisive with which bird species he likes best that he'd just give up n make an every-hybrid of some manner (tho it WOULD look most similar to a vulture, i think!). he'd literally make a sparklebird. rainbow feathers, scene getup, FUCK YOU let him have fun for once in his miserable life!!! realistically unlike phobos, who cannot ever take the stick out of his ass for 2 seconds to indulge in a little whimsy, i think crackpot probably had a fursona at some point (he just kinda stopped having time to think about it after The Occurrences. you get it!)

now. as for what god and everyone else would assign them....... actually a little tougher. bc a scorpion still feels right for phobos, symbolically- the ole fable about the scorpion and the frog, y'know? DAMMIT, PHOBOS. YOU WIN THIS TIME! but maybe he'd be a species with weaker venom. Just cause. (i could be really extra mean and say pseudoscorpion but cmon man.)

crackpot on the other hand.... ive gone into such meticulous detail about the kinds of bird he could be, but the funniest part is i don't think God would let him be a bird at all. birds are something he takes great comfort in, something he wants to be-- but he's a pretender, he's always worn a mask his whole life, always wished he could be somebody else. he'd be something that exhibits batesian mimicry [batesian mimicry is when one harmless species mimics another, more threatening species]-- i think he'd be a hoverfly, a type of fly that mimics bees! alternatively he could be a salamander but i don't have cool symbolism reasons for that i just think it's right.

TLDR;

if we're talking "jerma you'd be a rat" phobos could be a scorpion or pseudoscorpion and crackpot would either be a hoverfly or salamander, if we're talking "lion wolf hybrid king of the junjle" phobos would be an ostensibly cooler scorpion & crackpot would be some kinda sparklebird.

🕯️was there a fic that was really hard on you to write, or took you to a place you didn't think it would take you?

oh . my god. um yeah. okay well, most fics are really hard to write cuz im constantly tired, dont have the time or motivation, and run out of excitement or interest very quickly.

BUT, one fic that was really hard was Cute Library Boys it was....I think my first MK fic- it's just a fluffy Steven thing but it was HARD. Mostly bc I was still finding my footing, and because I picked over every single detail over "will anyone like this?" even though really- i was giggling abt it and loved it and thats what matter. In the end i said fuck it and just did whatever- but i remember spending HOURS trying to "fix" it. But ANYWAY it's cute and it makes me giggle (not my best work AT all, again i was still testing out the waters, but it's special to me<3)

One fic that absolutely took a life of its own was Holidays With Them (fluffy MK x muslim! reader thing) & Enchanted 1 and 2 (Loki >:) !!)

BOTH of those fuckers took a) AGES and b) i winged both of them lmao. the MK one started off as a fun little thing, cuz I was Yearning, and then it kind of just....expanded. I had whole ass essays and rants wth people. I made some friends. It was really neat. It just grew on its own like I was possessed and I went from there. The Loki one too- its a song fic, so you'd think i'd have a solid plan, but liek always, these fuckers do whatever they want >:( i HAD a plan but then i blinked and 7k words later, i had a whole different story and not a trace of the original plot. I was possessed once again.

HMMMMMM well. I've been working on planning this REALLY big and complicated series (for, SHOCKER, Loki) it's got like 3 different storylines and endings. It's suuuper fun actually, bc one of it is in the aftermath is him dying, and instead of whatever s1 was, we ignore that and suffer through angst >:) and its very traumatising but generally, a happy ending!! and i love getting to explore the what-ifs of a situation and digging through the little cracks of relationships!!! the second storyline is one that follows the show, and its really fun getting to poke at little holes to shove my own ideas into them!!!!

AND THEN im working on some Frank smut (based off of the little thing i put out a little while back cuz why not !!!). Oooh and i'm trinkering with boyfriend's dad!Marc >:)

but Also, I'm Yearning so much right now with all the stupid fluffy talk @hon3yboy keeps spewing and so I'm opening up my Docs with a heavy sigh to write fluffy stuff.

It's really fun!! Will any of this see the light of day soon? Absolutely not. I'm mostly focusing on my novel right now.

But it's fun nonetheless.

Soo im honestly kindaa uhm,, goldfish-like; i have a crap memory. and whenever in a serious situation, one where you need to stay on guard, i instantly calm down after someone cracks a joke and forget abt the whole situation.. So bcuz of that i get called "the goldfish of (gc name)" 🥲

But im really motherly and caring! I always take care of my loved ones like a nurse, so pretty much- im my friends personal nurse AND doctor (as someone who startes studying abt medical stuff when i was like 10,, young, ik) i also take care of stray animals whenever i get the chance. feeding them, taking care of their wounds, whatever! Im a good balance of childish and mature, though i fall more on the childish side! I honestly give out 'sad, wet cat' vibes at first, since i mostly spend time alone, sulking abt being alone, reading in the library alone.. but im the total opposite! Honestly kinda weird but in a good way? Super kind, and generous, and sympathetic, i always consider other peoples feelings first ofc! Honestly kind of a people pleaser🥲 softhearted person with anger issues huhu.. GRAHHH TEEHEE HII I’m gonna try to keep this as comprehensible as I possibly can because when I write these character things I honestly kinda feel like the fucking. Mario Perchance essay ifykyk BUT ANYWAYS 🤯

Ever since her childhood Charlie has had this disease called “I need to partake in everything all the time” syndrome. She’s competitive, creative, adventurous, and was often enthusiastic about the most minuscule things. She loved helping her mother bake, she loved helping her father organise papers for his job, she loved assisting Winona with whatever projects she could despite not understanding machinery on the same level as her. Like, any sort of activity that she could get her hands on and do with someone was enticing to her.

She got into a particularly bad argument with Winona before she left home to start living on her own. Despite their eventual rekindling, the event sparked this flame of rebellion that played a big role in her life during her time in San Francisco. There was this lingering need to prove her sister wrong despite her absence, to show that she was more than capable of defending and taking care of herself, that she could choose her own path. Outside of her many part-time jobs she’d hang around clubs to socialise, she got into flapper culture, she still clung to that joy in meeting new people and assisting them with whatever imaginable; which ultimately led her to the Palace Hotel.

Clicking with William happened pretty much immediately. They were similar in many aspects, both far away from home and somewhat striving after the public’s attention. Besides, a magic act seemed fun. And William was good at it. Collaboration with one another came easy to them and eventually they had made quite a name for themselves; William even changed his completely.

They eventually got together as a couple but it seemed like more of a business title than anything else. Charlie– deep in the closet and not quite yet on terms with that part of herself– mistook her feelings of friendship as romantic (because, hey, that’s a guy!) and followed suit (Maxwell was in a very similar position but THIS ISN’T ABOUT HIM!!!).

BUT YOU WANT THE DRAMA. YOU WANT TO HEAR ABOUT WHEN THINGS FUCK THE FUCK UP. Shit hits the fan when she finds out that Maxwell is probably engaging in cult activities (thanks to his little spell book) after visiting his apartment to pick up a few show props. Or, well, she registers it as cult activity at first; still (somehow) not fully onboard with the idea that shadow magic is, like, an actual thing. And it’s creepy but she still cares about him, right? So obviously she’s all hey. You’ve been isolating yourself for a hot minute now but just know that I’m here for you if you need anything. And then during their next show The Bad Thing Happened.

The force from the blow basically severed Charlie, the overwhelming amount of nightmare fuel entering her system all at once fucking with her system and turning her into the Grue. All this eventually leads us to when ACC actually takes place. She’s the nightmare queen and she’s doing a lot of Cryptic Shit.

Heeerre’s the thing. When it comes to rulers of the constant, it really is Them. Whoever’s on the throne is merely a vessel for Them to channel Their power through. There’s the illusion of collaboration, sure, but once They’ve drained you of all you have to offer you’re as disposable as a dishcloth.

The best heirs to the throne are people with baggage. Shadow magic is a craft reliant on its practicer’s mental state, the more there for Them to dissect the more there is for Them to use. They’ll pull you apart mentally and stretch you out physically, They’ll take whatever you have on the table. And sure, Maxwell had a fair amount of petty grudges pent up that They could bend and manipulate, but Charlie? She’s ripe with wrath. She feels confused, she feels betrayed, she feels scared, she feels angry. She wants to watch that old man die a thousand deaths and then kill him herself a thousand times more. Her mind is oozing with all sorts of intense emotions for Them to get Their grimy little hands on, there’s a reason she’s so powerful.

They’re breaking her apart. She’s deteriorating.

RIGHT and whether Maxwell ends up joining her again or not? ACC Maxwell is in this position where two sides are offering him different things that he really wants. Wanda is giving him this final chance at making things right, a ticket home, whereas Charlie is (falsely) offering him the comfort of the past; an opportunity to revert things back to how they once were but better. Both of these things are tempting, and both of the people in question do mean something to him. I suppose it all relies on where his greed takes him.

ok so the stage looked SO cool in person. the backdrops were gorgeous <3 and everything was like a physical prop, not projections… including the giant replica of bubbles the dog <3 pete kept pretending to put his hand in its mouth and patrick was singing to it! and the pyro was insane, i could feel the heat from it and i was Not super close to the stage. they Also had a clock on the side of the stage that would go backwards every so often… like going back in time to play older songs 😭

Lemon is the voice of reason between them. Emotionally, he's more mature and he is very calming, helping Tangerine keep control of his emotions and temper. On the other hand, Tangerine is physically fiercely protective of his brother.

I think Lemon had a phase where he tried to drop all his 'childish' interests, like Thomas. The one who brought him back to himself was Tangerine. He was expecting to enjoy his brother not always talking about and watching kids' shows, but Lemon got super serious and tried to focus on their job---and it was like most of his brother died. He was so serious and always trying to get things done, he was like Tangerine, and to his own surprise, Tangerine couldn't stand that because that wasn't his brother. Tangerine forced him to start watching Thomas again

Tangerine has a problem with getting paranoid at night. It was worse when they were young adults just starting to live on their own, and so he would only fall asleep if he was right next to Lemon on the sofa when his brother was watching Thomas on the TV. The familiar background noise and the feeling of his brother being right beside him was the only thing that could calm his mind enough to sleep. As long as he was on the sofa with Lemon, he would be fine, but more often than not he just slept on his shoulder. Lemon was just happy to help his brother, and also happy that helping his brother involved watching Thomas

They meet, become friends and all that jazz then they fall in love. Personality wise Rin looks intimidating/mean but is actually really sweet and care deeply about the people in their life. They’re kinda cold but get more fun when you start to know them. She likes playing minecraft and learning abt random niche subjects, especially stuff related to nature! And ofc, music is her life. About Rain, they’re literally me, I didn’t change a lot of things. An anxious mess who’s always lost in their thoughts and would rather live in a fantasy world. Creating and consuming art is one of the only things keeping them alive, and also sugary food bc yum :) they love kirby and the winter season.
